5-mile safari drive

The uk's longest safari drive.

Our 550-acre Safari Drive is home to many animals from around the world. From Bactrian Camels and White Rhino to Baboons and African Lions, you can see them all as you drive around the grounds. The route is split into different continental zones where you’ll drive through many habitats and see our collection of animals along the way. Once you’ve finished your roar-some experience, you can head down to our Foot Safari - both experiences are included in your ticket!

Your adventure begins in Eastern Asia where you’ll meet our herd of Bactrian Camels whose coat sheds throughout the year, and lots of Yaks, Eastern Kiang and Père David’s Deer roaming around. In the Southern Asia area, you’ll find the Axis Deer and Eld’s Deer as well as Nilgai and Blackbuck.

Our African Savannah zone is home to one of the largest White Rhino crashes in the UK. Watch out for the world’s largest bird too, the Ostrich, as they love to come over and say hello! Can you spot the distinct markings on the Roan Antelope or the short pointed horns of the Waterbuck? Whilst driving through the African woodland, keep your eyes peeled for the Sitatunga too.

Dare to enter the monkey jungle? The most anticipated area of the Safari Drive. Hold on to your seatbelts as our Baboons steal the show. They’ll come right up to your car so, if you’d prefer, our car-friendly route will allow you to watch from afar. If you still want the full mischievous experience, why not book the Baboon Bus?

African Lions

Our Safari Drive takes you through Lion Country, allowing you to watch the pride without a fence between them and your vehicle!

African Lions

White Rhino

White Rhino are one of the most endangered animals on the planet. They are often hunted for their horn.

White Rhino

European Bison

Bison can be found in North America and Northern Europe. The European Bison were once extinct in the wild.

European Bison

In the wild, a Baboon troop can number between 20 and 100! Their ranges vary considerably depending on food availability.

Baboons

A real highlight of the Safari Drive is meeting the Pride of Knowsley in the lion enclosure where our pride of African Lions roam around. See for yourself!

The beauty of the Safari Drive is that it's different every time you drive through and the best part is, you can go around as many times as you like!

Warning infographic incase of a breakdown

It's important to us that our guests and animals stay safe so we ask all guests to follow our rules of entry. Our animals behave as close to the wild as possible and can be unpredictable, so you should stay inside your car at all times. If you break down while on the safari drive it is important that all passengers stay within the car, you should sound your horn and wait for a patrol vehicle to come to your assistance.

Our safari drive is full of wild animals who can act unpredictably at times and we are not able to accept any responsibility for damage caused by our baboons within their enclosure. If you would prefer not to take this risk then why not take our car-friendly route or even hop on our Baboon Bus.

Guests are strictly prohibited from feeding the animals – that’s our job! If you are seen feeding the animals from your vehicle you will be asked to leave.

Dogs are not allowed in any areas of Knowsley Safari. This includes both the Safari Drive and also the pedestrian areas of the Foot Safari.

We do however provide basic accommodation for your dog should you wish to bring them on your trip.

Our kennels provide basic accommodation for your pet. Drinking water is available but we do not provide water bowls or blankets. Please feel free to bring with you any items that will make your pet as comfortable as possible. A £5.00 refundable padlock is available at reception on arrival.

We are famous for our drive-through Baboon enclosure but did you know that you can watch their antics from a safe distance if you’re not quite brave enough to venture in? You can take our car-friendly route which still gives you fantastic views of our cheeky residents.

If you fancy the thrill of the Baboons without any of the risk then try our baboon bus. You can book your seats online and you’ll be driven the whole way round the safari as well as through the baboon enclosure.

Longleat, wiltshire.

Feed giraffes by hand and walk on the wildside with lemurs at this popular safari park, found in the picturesque grounds of historic Longleat House.

First opened in 1966, Longleat Safari Park was the first drive-through attraction of its kind outside Africa, and it's still running strong today. With countless species of animals and attractions like Penguin Island, Stingray Bay, Jungle Cruise and an adventure castle, it's a great day out for the entire family. Explore the animal habitats on a road tour through the park, before stepping onto the Main Square and venturing into koala habitats, outdoor playgrounds and hedge mazes.

Special events run throughout the year, including the ever-popular Festival of Lights over the Christmas period; this large display of illuminated Chinese lanterns adorns the entire parkland and adds a touch of festivity to everything. And, of course, visitors can also extend their stay in the area with a tour through Longleat House and its surrounding pleasure gardens.

Longleat Safari Park is due to re-open on Monday 15 June - make sure to check the website through the link below for availability and opening times.

The Best Drive-Through Safari Parks and Zoos in the UK

The Best Drive-Through Safari Parks and Zoos in the UK

Have you ever dreamed of going on a safari in Africa, getting up close to the lions and elephants? Luckily you can recreate this sense of adventure right here in the UK. Take a break from driving by booking a trip with South East Coaches . You can simply relax and enjoy the views.

The best parks provide an unforgettable experience where you will get up close to the wild animals, often seeing endangered species and be transported to the plains of Africa or the jungles of Asia.

There are many great zoos to visit but these are 5 of the best drive-through safari parks and zoos in the UK.

Longleat Safari Park, Wiltshire

Longleat was the pioneer of safari parks in the UK. To this day it still provides everything you would want to experience. It’s 360 acres are home to lions and tigers roaming wildly. The monkey habitat brings you closer than you might want as they clamber over your vehicle. Coach hire means that you can keep your car safe. There are white rhino in the Big Game Park and you can meet giraffes and zebras in the African Village.

Woburn Safari Park, Buckinghamshire

Here in this 300 acre park, you will start with a road safari followed by a foot safari. The large animal exhibits include tigers, black bears and white bears. The animals roam in the extensive, beautiful countryside often coming really close to vehicles for a close-up experience. Get a premium view by booking a ticket with South East coaches . You can see a herd of buffalo on the Northern plains and a whole pride of lions in the Kingdom of Carnivores. The foot safari will give you the opportunity to see the smaller animals and enjoy informative talks from the zookeepers.

West Midland Safari Park, Worcestershire

This 150 acre park gives you the opportunity to get close to cheetahs, zebras and elephants. One of the most popular experiences is the white rhino herd on the African Plains. You will find rare deer cohabiting alongside buffalo. Elephant Valley is lucky to have young Sutton who will energetically entertain as he charges around, watched by his Mum. With Dinosaur Land and an ice age experience, there is something for all the family.

Knowsley Safari Park, Merseyside

This 550 acre park has the longest safari drive in the UK. The 5 mile drive will take you through different zones where you can get really close to the animals and the circuit takes around an hour to complete. The highlight has to be the lion enclosure where the lions wander between the vehicles. Other animals include tigers, white rhino and antelopes. The baboons always delight visitors with their funny antics.

Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, Kent

The Port Lympne reserve has over 900 different animals, many of which are rare and endangered. The 600 acre park has been open since 1976 and hosts 88 different species. Conservation is at the heart of the zoo’s philosophy and you can be assured that the animals are very well cared for. Your ticket fee helps to fund their mission. The Aspinall Foundation aims to stop the extinction of rare breeds and return endangered animals to the wild when possible. You can see some more unusual animals such as painted dogs and west lowland gorilla as well as black rhinos. You will also find European wolves and spectacled bears.

The best safari parks in the uk.

Meerkat in Longleat safari park, UK

Though nothing can beat seeing animals in their natural habitat, safari parks can be a great substitute when time, money and other circumstances get in the way of your dream trip. Visiting a safari park in the UK can also be a good introduction to safaris for children and other first-timers, as well as a more ethical choice of day out for animal lovers than the zoo.

In this post, we explore the UK’s best safari parks to help you support conservation from the comfort of home.

The UK’s Best Safari Parks

Longleat safari park.

Set in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside, Longleat Safari Park is a really family-friendly day out. In the main park, you can walk past enclosures housing everything from creepy crawlies to wild cats and primates.

At certain times of the day, you can join a jungle cruise out onto the estate’s huge lake where, if you’re lucky, you’ll spot a pair of hippos in the shallows and the silverback lowland gorilla and his family on the island in the centre. Keep your eyes peeled! As part of the trip, you’ll also have the chance to feed the resident sea lions who splash and swim alongside the boat in hopes of gobbling down some fish.

Of course, the highlight of any trip to Longleat is the self-drive safari. Yes, Wiltshire’s plains are home to 3 of the big 5: lions, rhino and Anne the elephant, as well as cheetah, wolves, tigers and deer. As long as you drive safely and keep your windows closed, the animals are well accustomed to vehicles and can treat you to some incredible encounters.

Other experiences available at Longleat include giraffe feeding, a lemur walk-through and monkey mayhem, where the rhesus macaques are free to clamber all over your vehicle and remove whatever takes their fancy! You might decide to take the safari bus for this exact reason…

Longleat giraffe

Longleat is committed to conservation right across the world. From breeding programmes to help restore populations of wild dogs and black rhinos in Tanzania to funding the conservation work of the Red Panda Network in Nepal, Longleat relies on donations and purchases from its visitors to support this critical work. By visiting, you’ll be doing a world of good!

Port Lympne

My personal favourite safari park in the UK is Port Lympne in Kent. This game reserve is the closest you’ll get to Africa in the UK, thanks to its safari drives and various lodge-style accommodation to stay overnight in for the ultimate experience.

There are enclosures in the main park, housing beautiful animals like lynxes, gorillas and brown bears, as well as lions, tigers and cheetahs in larger pens. You can visit each of these areas on foot, and I recommend timing your visits alongside the programme of ranger talks. These give you the opportunity to hear more about the incredible animals and ask any questions you can think of!

Like Longleat, there are wide open plains that are home to giraffes, zebra and antelope, but the only way to see them is by joining one of the tours, where an experienced guide takes you and a group of others out into the wild on a safari canter. You’ll be lucky enough to see these animals roaming free (or as free as is possible in the Kent countryside), as well as rhinos, elephants, wild dogs and other rare species behind fences.

Port Lympne safari park silver back gorilla

What makes this place really special is the Aspinall Foundation’s link to conservation efforts in Africa and beyond. Port Lympne has a hugely successful breeding programme that has returned various animals to the wild, including five eastern black rhinos, two cheetahs and over 60 gorillas.

At each enclosure, you’ll be able to read whether the animals inside are candidates for reintroduction, and there are dedicated teams at the park who will be more than willing to tell you more when you visit.

Woburn Safari Park

Over 80 rare and endangered species call Bedfordshire home, and you’ll be able to see them all at Woburn Safari Park.

Much like other UK safari parks, your visit may begin with a drive-through safari that will take you on a journey across the globe. From the comfort of your own car, you will drive across plains and through grassland to see rare horses, bison, wildebeest, camels, southern white rhino, buffalo, giraffe, monkeys and zebra.

Of course, my favourite area at Woburn Safari Park is the Kingdom of the Carnivores. Here, you could see Amur tigers, timberwolves, black bears and lions, each species separated into their own enclosures large enough that you’d still need to be lucky to spot them.

Taking a photo of a rhino at Woburn safari park in car

Once you have completed your 60-minute loop of the self-drive, your visit will be far from over, as your foot safari treats you to sightings of the smaller animals. Think parrots, meerkats, wallabies, otters, lemurs, sea lions, penguins, squirrel monkeys, red pandas and far too many more to mention.

By purchasing a ticket to Woburn Safari Park, you’ll be helping the team to sustain the population of animals kept onsite, as well as funding the critical conservation work they help to fund around the world. Various projects they support include the International Elephant Foundation, the Wildcats Conservation Alliance and Helping Rhinos. All very worthy causes, I’m sure you’ll agree!

Knowsley Safari Park

Knowsley Safari Park near Prescot in Merseyside boasts the UK’s longest safari drive over 550 acres.

Here you’ll have close encounters with African lions, white rhinos and bison from the comfort of your own car. Though if you’re nervous about damage to your vehicle in the baboon enclosure, book a spot on the baboon bus, which is kitted out with climbing ropes and ladders for the baboons to roam free on. You can’t get much closer than that!

African lion at Knowsley Safari Park

There’s even more to see on the foot safari, including Amur tigers, giraffes, meerkats, bush dogs, birds of prey, sea lions and tapir too. What a treat! There are animal talks and shows scheduled throughout the day, so make sure you plan in advance to see everything you want to.

Knowsley has a dedicated conservation team tasked with educating visitors and the wider public about their critical projects. They also work on the ground with endangered species, including monitoring, anti-poaching activities and fixing fences to reduce human conflict in their natural habitats.

West Midland Safari & Leisure Park

This safari park in the heart of the Midlands makes a great day out or a holiday in and of itself. A stay in any of the luxury safari lodges promises an incredible encounter with animals including tigers, rhinos and elephants; but with a drive-through safari and village walk also on offer, you’ll have just as good a time without the expensive short break.

The safari drive can be done in your own car or as part of a guided minibus tour, where you’ll see African lions, giraffes, zebra, wild dogs, cheetahs and antelope. There’s also a Wild Asia area housing Indian rhino, swamp deer and blackbucks too.

Lemurs at West Midland Safari Park

There is arguably more to see here once you’re out of your car, including lemurs, ostriches, red pandas, hippos, meerkats, penguins, sea lions and… dinosaurs. Yes, really! Animatronic replicas of T-rexes, velociraptors and more growl and roar through the bushes in the Land of the Living Dinosaurs. There really is plenty to see and do here!

You’ll notice ‘Leisure Park’ has been appended to the name, meaning there’s more here than the animals. Virtual reality experiences, rollercoasters, log flumes and more can be found in the Adventure Theme Park, where rides are available for an additional fee.

As perhaps the most theme park-like safari park in the UK, you’d be forgiven for believing this makes conservation less of a priority for West Midland. But that’s far from the truth. From research projects to breeding programmes, your entrance fee and other purchases will be supporting endangered species and biodiversity across the world.

Blair Drummond Safari & Adventure Park

Located just outside Stirling, Blair Drummond is easily one of the best safari parks in the UK, let alone in Scotland!

As well as the famous safari animals like lions and rhinos in the drive-through area, Blair Drummond is also home to a huge variety of rare and fascinating species. Over 300 animals including Highland cattle, red ruffed lemur and llamas can be found on foot, making for a packed and wild day out.

Highland cow at Blair Drummond Safari Park

Conservation is an important aspect of Blair Drummond’s work. Since 2014, the park has given over £192k worth of funding to conservation projects, with that money contributing to the salaries of anti-poaching teams, their equipment and fighting deforestation.

So there you have it: The UK’s best safari parks from every corner of the county. Which one will you discover first?

January 2024 Update

Following the completion of a national search, the Saint Louis Zoo has named Sabarras George its next WildCare Park Director. He will assume the role on February 5, 2024. “I believe that our staff, supporters and the community will really like Sabarras,” said Dwight Scott, Dana Brown President & CEO, Saint Louis Zoo. “I’m confident that he will help grow our conservation efforts and successfully lead the development of WildCare Park that will open in 2027 with amazing guest experiences.”

December 2023 Update

Four critically endangered addax and two endangered Grevy's zebras now reside at Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park located in north St. Louis County. These animals are within the Dana Brown Conservation Pasture, a large natural space dedicated for breeding and conservation efforts, which is part of the Kent Family Conservation and Animal Science Center at WildCare Park. The transition area helps the animals acclimate to their new space. The two species each will have access to 10 acres of pasture once they are fully acclimated.

Addax at WildCare Park

The zebras and addax came to WildCare Park in fall 2023 from the Saint Louis Zoo in Forest Park and from other Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited zoos. When WildCare Park opens to the public in 2027, more than 250 animals are expected to be living there. Acquiring animals from other accredited facilities and building appropriate animal social groups takes time. For the public opening, the focus is on endangered ungulates – hoofed mammals – as well as birds and other threatened species. Over the last year and a half, construction at WildCare Park has consisted of demolition of a few older buildings, fence installation and grading around the perimeter of the property, restoration of 260 acres back to native grasses, construction of barns and a utility building, and renovation of the headquarters building with a new observation deck.

Aerial view of WildCare Park

WildCare Park features two completely different, but highly synergistic components. The first is what the public will experience, a unique outdoor adventure that sends guests on a safari through herds of animals roaming wild over gently rolling grassy meadows and through native forests. The second component is the Kent Family Conservation and Animal Science Center, a dedicated facility within WildCare Park to sustain endangered and threatened species, made possible by the generosity of the Jerry and Judy Kent Family. The first animals arriving will live in the pastures and barns in this area.

July 2022 Update

In July 2022, several updates were announced :

  • Development of WildCare Park estimated to cost $230 million
  • Building demolitions nearing completion and perimeter fence installation is underway
  • Animals to begin arriving in 2023 for pilot pasture
  • Targeting public opening for 2027

December 2020 Announcement

Name unveiled.

In December 2020, the Saint Louis Zoo provided several updates on its north St. Louis County campus. First, the Zoo unveiled the name for its 425-acre north St. Louis County property – Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park. Next, the Zoo announced a leadership gift from longtime Zoo supporters, the Kent family, to name the Kent Family Conservation and Animal Science Center, which will be located at the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park. In addition, the Zoo shared information on biodiversity studies underway in and around the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park.

Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park

"We decided on Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park as it hits on three aspects that are key to the use of this campus: wildlife, conservation and public experience," said Jeffrey Bonner, Ph.D., Dana Brown President and CEO, Saint Louis Zoo. "With the two campuses, we will continue to operate under one mission that essentially has been unchanged for over a century: 'To conserve animals and their habitats through animal management, research, recreation, and educational programs that encourage the support and enrich the experience of the public.'"

WildCare Park

The word "WildCare" is not new for the Saint Louis Zoo. Launched in 2004, the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute centralized the Zoo's wildlife efforts. The Zoo's field conservation efforts have grown to include 17 conservation centers worldwide, all of which are founded on wildlife management and recovery, conservation science with applied conservation action, and working with communities. Five of these centers focus on wildlife conservation efforts in Missouri.

The word "Park" helps describe the guest experience that the public can expect when the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park opens – an abundance of opportunities to connect with nature through outdoor activities, attractions and wilderness adventures.

"While the COVID-19 pandemic may have slowed down some of the planning and initial efforts we had hoped would be done by now, we estimate a public opening as early as 2026 for the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park," said Dr. Bonner. "There's a lot of work ahead of us and we want to do this right."

The Zoo has conducted public experience studies and surveys with tourists and area residents, and will continue to seek input as it finalizes the public experiences at the new campus. The Zoo also will work with necessary authorities to evaluate property zoning, traffic studies, perimeter fencing and a potential pilot pasture in the near future.

Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park features two completely different, but highly synergistic components. The first is what the public will experience, a unique outdoor adventure that sends guests on a safari through herds of animals roaming wild over gently rolling grassy meadows and through native forests.

"Imagine, if you can, coming upon a herd of giraffe walking across the grasslands or rhinos surrounding your vehicle. Visitors might find themselves silently kayaking up to unwary zebra or disembarking the safari truck for a truly close-up experience," said Dr. Bonner.

More than a safari, visitors also will explore the forests on trails and, for the more adventurous, high up in the forest canopy.

"Visitors can enjoy a massive indoor/outdoor experience that combines the best that zoos, science centers and natural history museums have to offer – connecting people and animals in a way that has never been done before," said Dr. Bonner.

Those who want the ultimate outdoor adventure will be able to spend the night camping, or even "glamping," which is glamorous or luxurious camping at its finest.

Kent Family Conservation and Animal Science Center

The second component to the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park is the Kent Family Conservation and Animal Science Center, made possible by the generosity of the Kent family.

Kent Family Conservation and Animal Science Center

"The Saint Louis Zoo is more than just one of the finest zoos in the world," said Jerry Kent. "It is one of the world leaders in conservation. My family, including my wife Judy and our children Matt and Rachel, and Matt's wife Dr. Ana Kent, are proud to enable St. Louis' leading tourist attraction to expand their impact by basing this important work in facilities located in north St. Louis County."

The Kent Family Conservation and Animal Science Center is where conservationists will work to sustain populations of endangered species, conduct research and engage in applied conservation programs. It is key to the Zoo's work to advance wildlife conservation efforts.

"Together, the public experience and the Kent Family Conservation and Animal Science Center will merge applied science with intriguing dynamic visitor interactions – both are cutting-edge and unique," said Winthrop B. Reed, III, Chairman, St. Louis Zoological Park Subdistrict Commission. "We believe this is the first facility of its kind in the world and will doubtless be a game-changer for endangered species as well as for north St. Louis County and the region." "Today, the Zoo is thrilled to announce a leadership gift that will bring our dream of a Conservation and Animal Science Center one step closer to reality," said Reed. "Longtime Zoo supporters, the Kent family, will place their name on a significant part of the new campus – the Kent Family Conservation and Animal Science Center." Jerry Kent is a serial entrepreneur and founder of several area businesses, including Charter Communications, Tierpoint, Staylock Storage and Cequel III. He and his family are very involved in the region's charitable organizations and they financially support many causes through the Kent Family Foundation. "We are so grateful for the generosity of the Kent family," said John Sondag, President, Saint Louis Zoo Association. "With the Kent family's support, the Zoo will be able to build state-of-the-art habitats and spaces dedicated to conservation breeding of some of the world's most endangered species." The Kent Family Conservation and Animal Science Center will be a dedicated facility to sustain endangered and threatened species. For many such species, the Zoo is their last hope. The Zoo has a long history of bringing species back from the brink of extinction, and having a facility dedicated to assuring their survival, both in human care and in the wild, is critically important.

Native Species Biodiversity Studies

In addition to conservation programs in Missouri and around the world, the Zoo also will study the native animals and plants that live in and around the property. The first step in those efforts are biodiversity studies.

The overall goal of the biodiversity studies is to develop a comprehensive list and understanding of the animal and plant species that utilize the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park. The Zoo is mapping the biological and environmental health of the site, including the presence or absence of native wildlife, invasive species and diseases with a potential threat to Zoo animals, and an understanding of the types and quality of the habitats at the site.

"The knowledge gained from these biodiversity surveys is essential to make the best decisions about future property use including Zoo animal management decisions, property management, educational program development and property design and use," said Jo-Elle Mogerman, Ph.D., Director, Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park. "For example, we will learn if there are concerns about the types of plants there now and whether any native wildlife corridors run through the land."

Currently, there are eight areas of study: bats, birds, coyotes and foxes, invertebrates/pollinators, plants, reptiles, amphibians, and water quality of lakes and streams. Potential projects for community involvement include FrogWatch and City Nature Challenge trainings, invasive plant removal, litter cleanups, bird walks and other nature experiences.

Action Wildlife: A Photo Tour

Northwest Connecticut Wild Animal Park is Affordable Family Day Trip Destination

drive through safari kent

TripSavvy / Kim Knox Beckius

A drive-through safari. Exotic animals including some on the brink of extinction. A petting zoo. A museum-quality collection of mounted animals ranging from cuddly forest critters to giants of the African savanna. Playgrounds. Indoor and outdoor waterfalls. Amazing photo opportunities. Action Wildlife in Goshen, CT, will blow away your expectations.

This 116-acre zoo and museum (here's a map of the property) affords opportunities to observe animal behavior and to marvel at the diversity of life on our planet. And, at $10 for adults, $8 for children 12 and under (as of 2018), Action Wildlife is one of Connecticut's best family entertainment bargains.

Admission fees cover only 25 percent of the non-profit Action Wildlife Foundation's operating costs: The facility is obviously founder Jim Mazzarelli's passion. You'll love sharing an animal adventure with your kids in an uncrowded setting. Visit Action Wildlife spring through fall.

Museum and Exploration Center

In 2008, a Museum and Exploration Center was added at Action Wildlife in Goshen, CT. Inside this enormous warehouse, located just inside the admission gate, visitors first encounter an assortment of live birds and reptiles, like this turtle.

Holy Watusi!

We weren't surprised to spy a fish tank when we reached the first floor of the museum at Action Wildlife, but we certainly weren't expecting to come face-to-face with an incredibly lifelike, long-horned Watusi cow: a preview of the displays that awaited.

Stuffed Turkey

The stuffed turkey at Action Wildlife is not the kind you'd serve on Thanksgiving day. It is one of a menagerie of brilliantly executed taxidermy animals in the museum's vast and diverse collection.

From a Raccoon...

How diverse is the array of animals brought to life by taxidermist Mike Maston? The amazingly alert-looking animals on display range from this everyday North American masked bandit, the raccoon...

...to a White Rhino

...to a White Rhino , an enormous creature from the grasslands of Africa. Action Wildlife founder Jim Mazzarelli hunted all but a handful of the animals on display in the museum. A White Rhino hunting license was $20,000, we were told, with no guarantees.

Bison Battle

Video footage of scenes observed in the wild aided in the creation of realistic dioramas, such as this battle between two American bison, inside the museum at Action Wildlife.

Please Don't Pet the Bears

Action Wildlife's displays reminded me of those at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC, only here in Connecticut, glass does not separate visitors from the animals, and even on a holiday weekend, there isn't a crowd. Still, touching is not allowed.

A Photographer's Dream

Because the taxidermy animals are not hidden behind glass, Action Wildlife is a photographer's dream, even when the subject is a not terribly photogenic creature like the warthog! As you'll see, I was able to capture neat live animal shots outdoors, too.

Reach Out and Touch That Snout

No, you can't touch the water buffalo's nose. But doesn't it look as though it would be warm and moist if you did? The taxidermy work at Action Wildlife is a marvel. Pelts, preserved in the field, are mounted on mannequins. Even the glass eyes look real.

Lions' Prey

Some of the dioramas, such as this scene of lions attacking a water buffalo, are admittedly a tad gruesome. But my 7-year-old, who'd seen something similar on Animal Planet, was unfazed. There are ample options for diverting younger children's gaze.

In the museum's last room, my daughter had the chance to touch an assortment of fur pelts—moose, bear, raccoon—and elephant skin, too, at an interactive station. By now, we were eager to hop in our car and continue our Action Wildlife animal safari.

Fallow Deer

White-spotted, graceful Fallow Deer are common in England, but they're not often seen in New England. Action Wildlife has successfully bred Fallow Deer, and a small herd can be observed as visitors begin their drive around this animal park in Goshen, CT.

Scimitar Oryx

The Scimitar Oryx only sounds like an animal invented by Dr. Seuss! Native to North Africa, the Scimitar Oryx is extinct in the wild, so the opportunity to see this curvy-horned antelope at Action Wildlife in Goshen, Connecticut, is a rare one, indeed.

Water Buffalo

The taxidermy water buffalo we saw inside the museum gave us a sense of this hulking creature's size. Viewing this live water buffalo on the grounds of Action Wildlife gave us a sense of this big bovine's sloppy eating habits!

Drive-Through Safari

Around the corner from the Watusi Cattle, the 50-acre drive-through wildlife safari is one of Action Wildlife's most unique attractions. As we circumnavigated this enclosed area, we kept our eyes peeled for llamas, emu and Japanese Sika Deer.

Hop Out and See the Animals Up Close

That's a face only a Mama Llama could love! When we entered Action Wildlife, we learned that one of the beauties of this zoo is that visitors can hop in and out of their cars safely at any point for a close-up view of both exotic and domestic animals.

Poitou Donkey

The shaggy Poitou Donkey , an ancient breed that originated in France's Poitou region, is an incredibly rare animal. The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy lists the breed's status as "critical": Only 450 pure Poitous were known to exist as of 2005.

Head Into the Petting Zoo

The endangered and exotic animals at Action Wildlife are fascinating to observe, but who can resist baby farm animals? Not my family.

Making Friends

It's easy to make friends with the petting zoo sheep... if you have a bottle in your hand! When we visited, bottles of milk were $3 and small cups of grain $1. Be forewarned: The attendant likely won't have change. It's a bit of a ploy, I think.

Fun and Educational

For my little girl, feeding the baby sheep, kids and piglets was a highlight of our visit to Action Wildlife in Goshen, Connecticut. The animal park is a fun place to take kids of all ages, and school groups are welcome to plan educational outings, too.

A Scene from Disney

Deer aren't typically found in petting zoos, and the chance to feed this young fawn from our hands was like a scene from an animated Disney movie... only without singing birds flying around our heads.

A Playground for Little Tots

At Action Wildlife, there's a picnic area and playground for little kids under 6 near the petting zoo. Pack a picnic lunch, and you can easily make a day out of your visit to this wild animal park and safari in Northwest Connecticut.

A Work of Art

I've seen zebras in zoos before, but I only realized what a work of art the zebra is as I viewed the sole member of the species on view at Action Wildlife. For the first time, I noticed that the stripes on a zebra's mane align perfectly with its coat.

Don't Fence Me In

The Action Wildlife animals are penned in, but they all have plenty of space to roam inside their landscaped habitats. This horse wasn't going anywhere, but we did see a goat wander out into the road. We laughed when a staffer said, "That's Houdini."

Where the Buffalo Roam

The animals on display at Action Wildlife really do run the gamut from A to Z: American Bison to Zebu. The herd of bison (or buffalo) that call the wildlife park home can be seen from Route 4.

Larger Than Life

The American Bison is North America's largest living land animal, and, with my 80-200mm lens, I was able to gaze into the eyes of one of these majestic beasts. Action Wildlife's signage is sparse, but you can research animal facts online after your visit.

A Vigilant Elk

This American Elk kept careful watch on us as we observed her and even made a charge toward the fence at one point, causing me to reflexively grab my daughter's shoulder and pull her back from the elk enclosure.

A Mother's Instinct

I quickly realized that the elk's protective behavior mirrored my own. Mama elk was simply, instinctively ensuring the safety of her babies. I had never seen a baby elk. There's only one word to describe this bright-eyed calf: adorable.

A male elk, who I assume is the proud papa of this brood, looked on languidly while his offspring frolicked. American Elk shed their antlers annually. When you see how impressive a male elk's antlers can be, that's almost impossible to believe.

The Male of the Species

It's a natural instinct for elk and human moms to keep a sharp watch while their little ones play. I'll let you draw your own conclusions about whether the males of both species also share instinctive tendencies.

Goodbye Goats

We had to pull our 7-year-old daughter away from her new "friends," the Pygmy Goats, when we first visited their pen, so before we left Action Wildlife in Goshen, Connecticut, we drove back around and gave her a chance to say, "goodbye."

A Playground for Bigger Kids

Action Wildlife has a playground for bigger kids, too, back near the museum and gift shop, where shaded picnic tables are also available. With swings, slides, ride-on animals, a climbing wall and more, kids could easily spend an hour or more playing here.

Ride the Orange Snail

We thought gazing up at a rhino, touching elephant skin, beholding an Oryx, embarking on a safari, making friends with goats, bottle-feeding piglets, admiring a zebra and dodging a wary elk was enough for our girl. No. She had to ride the orange snail.

Safari Drive-Thru

The Virginia Safari Park, located in Natural Bridge, offers visitors the opportunity to see and feed animals up-close from their vehicles in the safari drive-thru attraction.

drive through safari kent

The Virginia Safari Park opened in the spring of 2000 because we felt there was a need and desire for people to be able to see wild animals in a much more natural environment than had previously been available.

In the Safari, you'll be able to see animals run and frolic with abandon on our 180-acre property. Take your time as you drive along the three miles of maintained gravel road. Feed the animals through your vehicle windows and be prepared to stop for them as they stroll across your path or even lie down.

Our animals are allowed to roam freely and act instinctively. This means you might see males competing with each other for the females’ attention, resulting in cute baby animals being born throughout the season. You could be among the lucky visitors who witness a live birth and the first steps of the newborn.

Feed the Animals

A Day in Bucolic Litchfield County, CT: Exploring Cornwall and Kent

Updated August 2, 2020

If you day-dream of rolling green hills, covered bridges, red barns and quaint New England towns filled with antiques and good restaurants, then Litchfield County, Connecticut is the place for you.

Located in Northwestern Connecticut, Litchfield County has become a popular weekend retreat for busy New Yorkers. Its bucolic setting filled with grass fields, rivers, woods and farmhouses beckon those looking for peaceful scenery outside of the city. An outdoors paradise it is, hiking, kayaking, fishing and nature walks are some of the activities you can enjoy.

The towns of Litchfield County are as picturesque as the natural landscape. Think beautifully restored colonial houses, charming boutiques, village squares with that perfectly placed bench, art galleries, and good food to be enjoyed. The towns of Kent, Cornwall, Litchfield, and Washington are just some of the towns that are popular summer destinations – and, actually, not just during the summer, but throughout the whole year. Fall with its fall foliage is stunning.

If you’re like me and crave that country escape every now and then, you will love Litchfield County. Depending on where you live, it makes for a great weekend or day trip escape. If you’re thinking that sounds divine, but will the kids get bored? Well, if you do it the right way, not at all. We spent a recent Saturday on a day trip to Cornwall and Kent, and with a little research found plenty for the kids to do. We even found an animal drive-thru safari! Below is our 1 Day Trip itinerary. Some of it was pre-planned, but much of it was spontaneous rambling. You definitely want to make sure you spend time driving and ambling around and discovering what’s around the next corner. The scenery is so beautiful.

Action Wildlife

Exploring Action Wildlife in Litchfield County, Connecticut.

In order to do some of the things I wanted to do, like go around taking photos of the countryside and perusing shops in town, I researched some kid-friendly activities in the area to balance things out. I had no idea my research would bring me to a drive-thru animal safari! In Goshen, CT is the super-fun Action Wildlife where you can drive around the 50-acre wildlife safari and observe all sorts of animals from your car. If you want to get out of the car, you can do that too. We saw zebras, buffalo, mountain goats, monkeys, bison, deer and so much more. There is also a petting zoo and a playground. That’s where we started our day, and the kids had a blast.

Red barn in Litchfield County, Connecticut.

From there we drove to Cornwall, by all accounts one of the prettiest towns in New England. And it is. For what it may lack in terms of town life (it’s pretty sleepy) it makes up for in its natural beauty. Views with hills in the distance, its famous covered bridge over the Housatonic River, idyllic homes with perfectly manicured lawns all make up beautiful Cornwall. We loved driving around Cornwall and looking at the scenery, and the kids enjoyed a stop at the covered bridge where there is a small park to hang out in.

Mohawk Mountain is located in Cornwall, the ski mountain that serves so many families as their first skiing experience, and Cornwall’s beautiful backdrop. Clarke Outdoors is in Cornwall as well, the popular outfitter store for all things kayaking, canoeing and rafting. If you’re into the outdoors, then you’ll be into Cornwall.

Countryside in Litchfield County, Connecticut

About 20 minutes from Cornwall is the attractive and artsy town of Kent. I just love this town. Funky shops and art galleries line its main street, and restaurants with outdoor patios abound. There are a number of cultural attractions, including the galleries, the Eric Sloane Museum and the CT Antique Machinery Museum. As far as town life goes, Kent is relatively happening. People are out and about, either dipping into shops or ending their day from the outdoors with a beer. We enjoyed walking around town and grabbing pizza at one of its local pizza joints.

Kent seems to offer that perfect combination of charming country town life and outdoor recreational activity. Hiking, fishing and kayaking are all staples of the area, and there are a few state parks in the area as well. Kent Falls State Park is where we headed to after our meal, and where we spent the late afternoon. It’s known for its cascading waterfalls, of which you can hike to the top. A ¼ mile hike, it’s fun to do with the family. At the bottom there is a large field with picnic grounds, the perfect spot to come with a packed picnic. Note: while the park offers hiking and fishing, there is no swimming allowed. Something we weren’t aware of since lots of people were basking in their suits! But their website strictly says no swimming.

And that was our day in Litchfield County. We’re looking forward to returning again later this summer or in the fall to see the fall foliage. Perhaps this time we’ll switch it up and head to Litchfield and Washington. For a country get-away it doesn’t get much better than this part of Connecticut. It’s like the Berkshires, only in CT.
