Chris Froome's 'Monumental' Tour De France Win

Olympic champion Chris Hoy hails Froome's win as a "huge achievement", as he becomes the second British winner in as many years.

Sunday 21 July 2013 20:33, UK

CYCLING-FRA-TDF2013-PODIUM

Chris Froome's Tour de France win has been described as "monumental" by six-times Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy.

Froome won the 100th Tour de France title, finishing more than four minutes ahead of his closest rival in the overall standings.

The 28-year-old, who learned to ride on dirt tracks in Kenya, crossed the finish line in Paris arm-in-arm with his Team Sky colleagues to become the second Briton to win the title in consecutive years.

Sir Chris said: "It is a huge achievement and I almost feel sorry for Chris because people are almost getting blase about it.

"People think it is another British winner, so that is what we should expect - but if you take a step back and get some perspective, you can see what a monumental achievement it is for him to have done this."

Froome set off for the French capital in the leader's yellow jersey for the final stage of the Tour after more than 80 hours and 2,000 miles in the saddle.

He had to wait until he reached the Champs-Elysees to be crowned champion, but tradition dictates the leader is not threatened on the final day of Le Tour.

After winning the title, Froome thanked his family, friends and teammates.

He said: "I'd like to dedicate this win to my late mother. Without her encouragement to follow my dreams I would probably be watching this at home on TV.

Le Tour de France 2013 - Stage Twenty One

"This is a beautiful country, with the finest annual sporting event in the world ... and this is one yellow jersey that will stand the test of time."

Speaking after the finishing line, he said: "It brought tears to my eyes just coming over the line with the guys like that.

"This really was an amazing way to finish off a fitting 100th edition of the Tour de France."

Froome's father, Clive, told Sky News the family was "thrilled to bits" about the win.

He added: "I think rather like Chris it was huge relief. We followed every single kilometre of the very lengthy three weeks and (it's) just huge relief he's there safe and sound, and delivered the goods."

Froome senior said his son's victory could help cycling shed its image as a sport riddled with drugs cheats, saying his win was "a landmark" that could potentially convince doubters that cycling is entering a new clean era.

Froome has had to endure some tough lines of questioning from the media throughout the Tour on the subject of doping, particularly after his victory on stage 15 on top of Mont Ventoux.

"He is aware and has felt pretty indignant at the aspersions that have been cast in his direction and at the sport in general and I think he feels that there are so many young, clean riders achieving positions in this year's tour that it may be a turning point for cycling, which cycling so badly needs," Mr Froome said.

Britain's Mark Cavendish failed to make it five in a row on the Champs-Elysees after finishing in third place in a sprint finish.

Marcel Kittel won the stage, with Andre Greipel in second.

Prime Minister David Cameron led the tributes to the cyclist. He tweeted: "A brilliant win by @chrisfroome.

"After two British winners it's only right the Tour de France comes to Yorkshire next year."

Labour leader Miliband described the epic three-week road race victory as "fantastic", adding: "Another brilliant day for British cycling."

Welsh hurdler Dai Greene tweeted his congratulations to Froome, saying: "Team Sky did amazing. Massive congratulations to @chrisfroome , what a worthy winner."

Broadcaster Gary Lineker also took to the social networking site to voice his delight, tweeting: "Congratulations to @chrisfroome on a stunning #TourDeFrance victory. A monumental effort."

Retired cricketer Andrew Flintoff said: "Just seen the news , amazing effort from @chrisfroome , well done! #teamplayer"

Froome's first cycling mentor, David Kinjah, paid tribute to the "focus and dedication" of the Tour de France champion.

Chris Froome and his Kenyan mentor David Kinjah

Froome met Mr Kinjah, a professional cyclist in Kenya, when his mother took him to his first organised race at the age of 12.

Mr Kinjah quickly became Froome's mentor and they trained together, mountain biking in the rural highlands north of Nairobi.

For the last three weeks Kinjah has been following Froome's progress in arguably the world's most gruelling sporting event after buying a satellite television package and recording every stage of the Tour.

Mr Kinjah said: "Even though we don't see each other so much any more he has lived my dreams. He is wearing the yellow jersey every day and I almost felt like I was wearing it myself."

Reflecting on his month-long ride across France, Froome added before the final stage: "It's difficult for me to put it into words. It's been an amazing journey for me.

"The race has been a fight every single day."

Team Sky manager Dave Brailsford set about grooming Froome into a winning rider the moment he joined the squad in 2010.

His protege finished second in the 2011 Vuelta a Espana and helped Sir Bradley Wiggins to success on the Tour de France a year later.

"I'd like to come back and keep contending for the Tour for as long as I can and as long as I have the motivation," he said.

Froome claimed the yellow jersey on stage eight - the first of his three stage wins en route to Paris.

Tour De France

Colombia's Nairo Quintana finished second overall, four minutes and 20 seconds behind Froome, with Spain's Joaquim Rodriguez third, a further 44 seconds back.

After Chris Froome cut back on carbs for more protein, he lost 20 pounds, started winning the Tour de France, and became a millionaire

Chris Froome on Sunday won his third Tour de France title in four years, and yet his victories were many years in the making . So much is needed to win the Tour — among other things the right genes, a super-strong team with a big budget, the best bikes and gear, moral support, motivation, the right mind-set, and hard training. But Froome also had to lose significant weight, and he has developed physically from a younger and stockier version of himself into the quintessential stage racer: lean, light, and strong.

When Froome turned pro in 2007 at age 22 , he weighed 167 pounds. Now, at 31, he is often cited as weighing 147 (in his 2014 autobiography he said he was 66 kilos, or 145 pounds). The 20-pound weight loss has allowed him to thrive on the bike, especially in the mountains. In scientific terms, his power-to-weight ratio — a key measurement used to express an athlete's performance — is about 6.25 w/kg , the envy of just about every cyclist. After the trimming, Froome is thought to have increased his power to weight by 10%.

"His success can be put down to a massive loss in weight, helping to explain his improvement from also-ran to Tour de France winner," William Fotheringham at The Guardian noted .

"The engine was there all along," Jeroen Swart, a sports physician and exercise physiologist at the University of Cape Town, told Richard Moore for Esquire. "He just lost the fat."

Hello, protein — goodbye, carbs

For the first several years of his professional racing career, Froome had a modest résumé . By far his best result came in his fifth year as a pro, at the end of the 2011 season in the Vuelta a España, or Tour of Spain, where he finished second overall, won a stage, and wore the leader's jersey. Until then, Froome was largely unknown.

In the years leading up to that remarkable performance, Froome had been carrying all kinds of extra weight — tipping the scales at up to 167 pounds. In a 2014 interview with Paul Kimmage for the Irish Independent, Froome said he had "always been aware of the weight issue" but took it for granted: "I don't think I necessarily thought that I could go much lower than [69 kilos/152 pounds] and apparently I have. I've gone a good three kilos lower [66 kilos/145 pounds] which is huge."

—Team Sky (@TeamSky) April 23, 2014

Michelle Cound, now Froome's wife, said in the same interview that he "starved himself" before his breakout performance:

MC: He starved himself before the Vuelta, and then he came back to South Africa and that's when we started dating. I've always had a bit of an interest in sports nutrition and my view was that he could still train on more protein and cutting back on the carbs at certain times. And also making sure he wasn't hungry, so having more meals, more often, things like that.

CF: But smaller portions. Basically, I think I lost the weight for that 2011 Vuelta in an unhealthy way; I was starving myself trying to get the weight off and I don't think that's healthy or sustainable. But since I've been with Michelle I've learned to do things in a ...

MC: It also keeps your weight more stable throughout the year, so you're not starving yourself, and then after a Tour you want to eat everything.

CF: (laughs) I still do.

MC: Especially the carbs, he's got such a sweet tooth. But he's found now that if he does cut back on carbs the weight does come down a lot easier than it did in the past. And cutting out foods like breakfast cereals and a lot of the wheat products and bread but still eating enough food — the right food — that he is able to not feel hungry during the day. If you look at his build from the 2011 Vuelta compared to now, he's still lean but his muscles look a lot more defined. So now he has found a way of doing it ...

In July 2012, 11 months after starving himself to ride well in the Vuelta, Froome finished second in the Tour de France. Then he won the race outright in 2013, 2015, and 2016. (He was favored to win the 2014 Tour but crashed out the first week.)

As Froome told Kimmage : "In the Vuelta that year (2011), I think my muscles were probably lighter. I was quite gangly. You wouldn't look at me and say, 'That's someone who's strong.' Whereas now, my diet is a lot more protein based . I've cut back on carbs completely but I'm not losing muscle."

Big lungs too

It's not just about being light. Froome has an exceptional VO2 max — 88.2 — a key performance indicator that measures the maximum amount of oxygen an athlete can use.

"The general population has a VO2 max of 35 to 40, with highly trained individuals in the 50s and 60s," AFP reported. "A few athletes have been measured in the 90s, including three-time Tour winner Greg LeMond. Phillip Bell, a senior sports scientist at GSK, told Esquire: 'Froome's values are close to what we believe are the upper limits for VO2 peak in humans.'"

It all means that Chris Froome has a huge, and hugely efficient, engine. When he won his first Tour he was already down to his ideal race weight of 147 pounds, which he has kept to these past few years, and it has paid off handsomely. He has three wins in the world's biggest bicycle race and earns at least $5 million a year — massive for a bike racer and a far cry from his neo-pro year when he made 22,500 euros.

Men's Health asked Froome whether it was easy for him to stay lean :

"No. I think hard about the quality of the food I'm eating – organic fruit, vegetables and meat wherever possible. It's a common misconception that because we're training five or six hours a day that we can eat what we want and burn it off. It really is a case of watching every little thing you put in your mouth and how it's going to benefit you. Your body really does respond to tweaks then."

—Chris Froome (@chrisfroome) July 19, 2016

In Froome's autobiography, "The Climb," he likens eating right to fidelity:

"I try to go very light in terms of diet. In the mornings I limit myself to just the one bowl of porridge, and normally a two-egg omelette, with no hint of extras on the side. No second helpings, no picking, nothing. If there is a big stage ahead that day I'll try a three-egg omelette, but warily, and I'll mix a small amount of white rice into the porridge ...

"On to the desserts, which no longer contain 'love' as I like to put it. Instead, I'll chew a few pieces of fruit or have a pot of yoghurt. I don't count calories or know the values of most things; I just let my instinct guide me as to what is the right amount to eat. My instinct always says that the right amount is less than I feel like eating. In a previous life I think my instinct lived in a remote monastery. I can think of food, see things in terms of food ... But I just can't eat food. Not like before. It's a fidelity thing."

Chris Froome wins 2017 Tour de France, plus final standings

Chris Froome has never been more challenged at the Tour de France than in 2017, and that’s why this yellow jersey is his best ever.

Le Tour de France 2017 - Stage Nineteen

Chris Froome completed Sunday’s processional up and down the Champs-Élysées to win his fourth Tour de France title in five years. In the history of cycling, only four riders have won more — Miguel Indurain, Bernard Hinault, Eddy Merckx, and Jacques Anquetil. Froome is also one of five riders to ever win three consecutively, joining Louison Bobet, Indurain, Merckx, and Anquetil.

As dominant as Froome is — and he is assuredly deserving of his place as one of the best cyclists ever — his fourth yellow jersey didn’t come easily. For the first time in his career, he gave up the yellow jersey after taking it during the Tour. He wrangled the jersey from Sky teammate Geraint Thomas on Stage 5 , then appeared to crack on the steep ramp into Peyragudes on Stage 12 and gave it to Fabio Aru. In the process, he looked more vulnerable than we have ever seen him in July.

But of course, as has always been the case, Froome was at his best in the Tour’s third week. He took the yellow jersey back for good on Stage 14 when Aru got caught too deep in the peloton before the uphill finish in Rodez, then proceeded to hold pace on the major Alpine climbs of Stage 17 and 18 as Romain Bardet and Rigoberto Uran attacked.

Froome had at least two riders within 30 seconds of him from Stage 12 until Stage 20, and managed to become just the seventh rider to ever win the Tour without a single stage win ... but he won, nonetheless, and his latest win might be his most impressive. Froome, at 32, is at an age when riders should be in decline, and the field of general classification contenders is getting stronger by the year.

How long Froome’s reign will last is difficult to say. Uran, who took second, seemingly had a career renaissance. Bardet, third, will be dominant if he ever learns to ride a time trial properly. Nairo Quintana, who finished a disappointing 12th, probably won’t be foolish enough to try to race the Giro d’Italia before the Tour next year. Mikel Landa, Froome’s teammate, likely would have been on the podium if he hadn’t been working for his team leader.

Then there are the riders who didn’t make it to the podium. One of the great what-ifs will be what might have happened if Richie Porte hadn’t suffered that terrible crash on the hair-raising descent of Mont du Chat during a wild Stage 9 . Tom Dumoulin, who didn’t come to the Tour but bested Quintana at the Giro, is rounding into elite form, and will be among the favorites to win if he decides to ride the Tour next year.

And yet, how could anyone bet against Froome topping the podium again next year? The man proved in 2016 that he can win in practically every way possible . In 2015, he did it even when the world seemed to hate him . This year, he won when even the course was stacked against him . At this point, there’s nothing to do but to relent: Chris Froome is the best cyclist in the world and will be until such a time when he isn’t. Only the course of time can take him down now.

Chris Froome headlines CIC Ventoux climbing challenge

Pozzovivo, Woods, Guillaume Martin also in line up for double ascent of Giant of Provence

Chris Froome

Multiple Tour de France winner Chris Froome will ride the one-day CIC Mont Ventoux race next Tuesday, organisers have announced, as the days count down to the Tour de France and final team selections are made. The Israel-Premier Tech veteran has never ridden the Mont Ventoux mid-week race before, which features a double ascent of the mountain nicknamed ‘The Giant of Provence, and takes place on June 13th.

Froome last raced in another tough mountainous one-day French event, the Mercan’Tour Classic Alpes-Maritimes, finishing 14th behind winner Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost).

In a strong climbing line-up for Israel-Premier Tech, race organisers say Froome will be joined at the 154 kilometre CIC Mont Ventoux, now in its fifth edition, by teammates Mike Woods and Domenico Pozzovivo.

Israel-Premier Tech have still to name their Tour de France squad but Froome faces a fight for selection after racing so little in 2023.

Daryl Impey, Michael Woods, 2022 stage winners Simon Clarke and Hugo Houle, Jakob Fuglsang and sprinter Giacomo Nizzolo are expected to ride the Tour de France squad.

While it is not known if last year’s winner, Ruben Guerreiro (Movistar) - then riding with EF Education-EasyPost claimed a memorable 1-2 victory in 2022 with teammate Esteban Chaves - will be taking part.  But at least one former Ventoux champion and ex-Spanish National Champion Jesus Herrada (Cofidis) is already down on the provisional start-list.

Herrada’s teammate Guillaume Martin, fifth in 2022 and third in 2020 is also named by the organisers as a starter, and so too are recent Giro d’Italia leader Bruno Armirail (Groupama-FDJ), Giro d'Italia 2021 and Vuelta a España 2019 mountains classification winner Geoffrey Bouchard  (AG2R-Citröen), former Vuelta a España leader Rudy Molard (Groupama-FDJ) and Movistar’s pint-sized Colombian climber Ivan Sosa.

Taking place on June 13th, the fifth edition of the CIC Ventoux includes 4,500 metres of vertical gain, starting in the town of Vaison-la-Romaine, scene of multiple finishes in the Critérium du Dauphiné and Tour de France, and ending at the summit of the mountain, 1,910 metres above sea level.
