Thank you for the report ! Your selection of coach, itinerary and "camping" venues made the "best use" of the vehicle & time invested as well ! Congratulations, on a well planned New Mexico, visit ! carracar

actually, it was the state run rv sites that did NOT have electricity, bad editing

Most all RV sites have electric ... However as a Winter economy measure ... They may have been disabled to prevent some few ... from heating their coaches, on the States "nickel" ... carracar

at the three state sites in NM where we stayed earlier this month some sites had electricity and some not. The big rigs congregated at the sites with electricity and water and they were there for several days, not traveling thru like we were. The prettiest State site where we stayed was called City of Rocks and where we parked it was a beautiful site some distance from the next sites on either side, and there is no water or electric summer or winter at that particular site. Cost there was also $10/night vs $14/night for those with utilities. The sunset and stars after nightfall at City of Rocks was awesome.

Albuquerque Hotels and Places to Stay

  • Where can I have some local New Mexican food?

Albuquerque Is a Food Lover’s Dream. These Are the Best Places to Eat and Drink There.

This new mexican city is a lot more than just chilelandia..

I was recently in Albuquerque to record an episode of our Unpacked by AFAR podcast . The episode was about the city’s outdoor spaces and how they’ve been protected over the years. I met local historians, explored the Paseo del Bosque trail, and even interviewed a hot air balloon pilot—while flying in a balloon. But the narrative that surprised me the most was around food. Yes, there are fantastic chiles, but the city offers far more. It has a thriving Vietnamese culinary scene. It has a generation of new winemakers building on New Mexico’s wine-making tradition. (It’s the oldest wine-producing region in the United States.) It has a young Native farming community. And so much more. Here’s how to take advantage of this Southwestern city’s culinary bounty.

Where to eat

Red or green? It’s the official state question , shorthand for, “Do you want red or green chiles?” In this case, “chile” traditionally refers to the sauce served with whatever dish you’re ordering. Find out which one you like best at El Patio , a classic joint opened in 1977, which offers dishes like frito pie, chile relleno, and its famous green chile enchiladas. One last chile hint: To try both, just ask for “Christmas.”

A server at Indian Pueblo Kitchen delivers three plates of enchiladas and more, with seated diners in background

Taste the 19 pueblos of New Mexico at Indian Pueblo Kitchen.

Indian Pueblo Kitchen Located inside the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center , the casual Indian Pueblo Kitchen restaurant offers an easy way to tour New Mexico’s 19 pueblos through food. (The pueblo people are New Mexico’s original inhabitants, and each pueblo is a sovereign nation.) On my visit, I swear I ate half the menu. We started with the blue corn–crusted fried Kool-Aid pickles, tasted our way through several stews, including the killer red chile beef bone posole, worked our way up to blue corn enchiladas, and rounded things off with a slice of peach pie. The perfect way to end, or kick off, a visit to the cultural center.

Sawmill Market

It’s choose-your-own-adventure dining at this polished food hall—one of three in the city—located in what was once (surprise) a sawmill. There are almost 30 restaurants and food merchants in Sawmill Market , including Hot Pizza (wood-fired pies), Dr. Field Good’s Burgers (comfort food with a New Mexican spin), and Little Madrid (paella, Basque cheesecake), plus a couple of cocktail bars, an excellent coffee shop, and other options.

I can’t recommend a stay at Los Poblanos enough, but if you can’t manage a night, at least have dinner at Campo . Under chef Christopher Bethoney, the restaurant uses ingredients grown on site, plus seasonal products from mostly New Mexican producers. The menu changes frequently, but the grilled New Mexican beef is a highlight, as is anything with corn. Plus, it has a strong list of New Mexican wines. Don’t miss the Farm Shop, which sells coffee, bonkers-good pastries, and a whole host of delicious things to bring home, including the inn’s new botanical-infused gins.

Coda Bakery

When a local food writer tells you that Coda serves the best bánh mì sandwich he’s ever had, you listen. At this Vietnamese spot, they use local ingredients to craft gorgeous spring rolls, noodle bowls, and sandwiches (try the shrimp sausage). Rounding out the menu are smoothies and traditional Vietnamese coffees.

Mesa Provisions

Steve Riley is another local chef focusing heavily on New Mexican–grown food, and at his Central Avenue Mesa , he transforms it into things like chicken-fried quail, trout with a citrus beurre blanc and pickled mushrooms, and a magical, miso-accented charred cabbage dish. I sat at the bar, where I got to chat with the bartenders, and Steve himself—a 2024 James Beard semifinalist—as I sipped on a local sparkling wine and snacked on green chile–studded cheddar biscuits. A must-visit!

The menudo is one of the many dishes Barelas Coffee House is famous for.

Barelas Coffee House

The Barelas neighborhood is one of the oldest communities in Albuquerque, and in many ways, it is the city’s Latin heart. It’s home to the National Hispanic Cultural Center , as well as the revered Barelas Coffee House , a restaurant opened in 1978 by longtime resident Michael Gonzales. Try classic dishes like huevos rancheros, enchiladas, and the very popular menudo, a traditional Mexican soup made here with tripe and red chile paste (and with the reputed power to cure hangovers). One of the restaurant’s many claims to fame: Barack Obama once dined here.

Soo Bak Seoul Bowl

This popular spot started as a food truck, and locals loved it so much, chef-owner John Katrinak went brick and mortar. At Soo Bak , he used both his mother and grandmother’s recipes to craft the Korean–New Mexican menu, which ranges from classic bibimbap with kimchi and rice to the New Mexican bowl with spicy pork, green chile, and Korean pepper sauce.

Where to drink

Bow & Arrow Brewing

Bow & Arrow is the first Native women–owned brewery in the United States. Owners Missy Begay and her wife, Shyla Sheppard, use Southwestern ingredients—often Indigenous ones, purchased locally—to craft creative, tasty beers. Beers like the Denim Tux, a nod to the official wardrobe of the Southwest, is made with blue corn from the Santa Ana Pueblo. Plus, through their annual Native Land Initiative , they brew a beer to acknowledge the land of the Tiwa people that the brewery sits on, share the recipes with breweries around the country, and donate all proceeds to local Native American nonprofits.

Play foosball, grab some food, and enjoy fan favorites like the Elevated IPA at this longtime local brewery, which takes its name from the Spanish word for “summit.” La Cumbre founder and brewer Jeff Erway rotates in seasonal brews like the Tonal Bliss IPA, but his goal is to really dial in the classics. He also has a second location that only serves beer.

The Copper Lounge

At this queer friendly bar, the vibes are speakeasyish and the cocktails are creative. Sit beneath the copper ceiling—hey, it’s the Copper Lounge !—and sip on an El Mezcalero (pineapple juice, mezcal, ginger) or a Kentucky Ninja (Japanese whisky, bourbon, lemon). Or sit in the lounge, where they screen old-timey movies. Small bites, such as Sonoran dogs and elote, are also available.

Happy Accidents

You know you’ll get a good drink when the people who run it were named the best bar team at the 2023 Spirited Awards, the most prestigious bar award. (You may also recognize Happy Accidents co-owner Kate Gerwin from her appearance on Netflix’s Drink Master ). Choose from more than 40 cocktails, from the spirit-free Chris Barley (roasted buckwheat, garam masala, hops) to the very spirited Dirty Talk (kind of like a dirty martini, but with olive, garlic, leek, and rosemary gins).

Teddy Roe’s

Another excellent watering hole, this one a true speakeasy. I won’t reveal how to find Teddy Roe’s , because that’s half the fun, but your adventuring (which may or may not begin in a bakery . . . ) will be rewarded with a hefty list of elevated, creatively named cocktails, like the blueberry-infused Blues on Michigan Avenue or green tea–accented take on a milk punch called the Genuine Risk. Or ask one of the bartenders—one may just be co-owner Jessica O’Brien—to whip you up something special.

Zendo Coffee

Sometimes you need a brew of a different sort, and Zendo Coffee (there are two locations) hits the spot. The café doubles as an art gallery, so you’ll always have something to look at while you savor your Aztec latte (dark chocolate, cayenne) or Regis (double shot, sparkling water, house-made whipped cream). Plus, the pastries from the Witching Flour Bakery are fantastic, even the gluten-free doughnuts.

Bike and Taco tour with Routes

Albuquerque has some excellent trails, so don’t miss an opportunity to see the city on two wheels. Routes , located in Old Town, rents bikes, but it also offers guided tours, from those that focus on murals to those that focus on Breaking Bad filming locations. The newest offering is the ABQ Bike & Taco tour , which takes you to three different taco spots, with cycling breaks in between.

Level 5 at Hotel Chaco

There’s no better panoramic view in the city than the one at the top of Hotel Chaco , located across the street from the Sawmill Market. On a sunny day (and there are many of them in Albuquerque), its Level 5 rooftop restaurant is the place to be for sunset. And the food and drinks match the view—on my visit, I watched the sun dip below the horizon as I sipped an Old-Fashioned and ate the Asparagus Calabacitas, a mix of summer squash and asparagus accented with a swirl of red chile gel and served with tortillas.

This epic new cruise itinerary will hit more destinations than you thought possible

Gene Sloan

Holland America is going big with its latest around-the-world cruise.

The Seattle-based line on Monday revealed plans for a globe-circling voyage in 2026 lasting 132 days — as many as 19 days longer than other around-the-world sailings it's offered in recent years.

Kicking off in Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 4, 2026, the Grand World Voyage, as the line is calling it, will include visits to all seven continents — a relative rarity for world cruises. It'll also include extensive time in South America and Northern Europe — which is tough to pull off logistically on an around-the-world cruise.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

"This one is ambitious in the sense that we're really stretching that line ... all the way down the east coast of South America to Antarctica and providing that experience and then working our way kind of diagonally back up to the Mediterranean and Northern Europe," Paul Grigsby, Holland America's vice president for deployment and itinerary planning, told TPG in an exclusive interview in advance of the announcement.

Grigsby noted that an around-the-world cruise the line offered in 2019 included stops in Northern Europe but not an extensive exploration of South America. To get both regions into the 2026 itinerary, Grigsby's team had to make the sailing considerably longer than the 2019 sailing. The 2019 sailing was just 113 days in length.

"I think we're more comfortable now with longer cruises," Grigsby noted.

In the last couple of years, Holland America has been doubling down on longer sailings , something for which the line has long been known. The line's efforts to add more longer sailings have included the addition of a new series of so-called Legendary Voyages that focus on a single region and range from 25 to 59 nights in length.

The newly announced world cruise will feature stops in 47 ports in 39 countries in all — a hefty number for a world cruise offered by any line.

Around the world from Fort Lauderdale

As is often the case with Holland America's around-the-world cruises, the just-announced 2026 sailing will take place on the 1,432-passenger Volendam, one of the smallest Holland America vessels.

After starting in Fort Lauderdale, Volendam will first head southward to Barbados in the Caribbean before working its way down the east coast of South America toward Antarctica. Stops in South America will include Devil's Island in French Guiana; Belem, Recife and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil; Punta del Este and Montevideo in Uruguay; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and the Falkland Islands.

cruise america albuquerque

From the Falklands, Volendam will continue southward to Antarctica for a multiday visit before cruising along the coast of Chile and into the Chilean fjords. It'll then cross the Pacific to French Polynesia, New Zealand and Australia on a course that will take it past the rarely visited destinations of Easter Island and Pitcairn Island.

Easter Island and the islands of French Polynesia have ranked high in surveys from Grigsby's itinerary planning team that asked past passengers where they want to go, according to Grigsby.

In particular, Easter Island is a "bucket list destination" for many Holland America regulars, and the South Pacific is "one of the top-rated regions," he said.

Australia also is popular with Holland America passengers, which prompted Grigsby's team to work in stops in the Australian ports of Sydney, Townsville, Cairns and Darwin. Both the Townsville and Cairns stops allow for excursions to Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

"I don't think I would ever not have Australia and New Zealand in a world cruise," Grigsby said. "It always rates high among our guests."

From Australia, Volendam will head to Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka and the Maldives before quickly transiting through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal to Europe.

R elated: Holland America unveils another epic cruise — this time with a twist

In contrast to many world cruises of the past, stops in the Middle East have been mostly left off the schedule, with the exception of calls in Safaga and Alexandria in Egypt to allow for visits to the ancient Egyptian sites of Luxor along the Nile and the Great Pyramids near Cairo. That's in part because of waning interest in the region among world travelers due to the recent outbreak of war in Gaza and attacks on shipping in the Red Sea.

"I don't think you'd be surprised to know that the area around Dubai (in the Persian Gulf) and Oman is of less interest to our guests than it has been in the past," Grigsby noted. "That's why you find a fairly speedy transit through the Red Sea and Suez Canal."

Once in Europe, Volendam will stop in a wide range of destinations, including the Mediterranean ports of Piraeus, Greece (the port for Athens); Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Naples in Italy; and Alicante, Spain.

More northerly ports will include Oslo, Norway, and Copenhagen, Denmark.

Among the more unusual stops in Europe will be Bordeaux, France, which is on the Garonne River in southwestern France. It's a port that is only accessible to smaller cruise vessels such as Volendam.

The voyage will visit 39 countries in all, with stops at 47 ports.

Related: The 11 best around-the-world cruises

Nine of the calls will be overnight, allowing for more in-depth touring. These overnight calls include stops in Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, Safaga, Alexandria and Lisbon.

The longer stays are in places where Holland America's past passengers have said they wanted longer stays, Grigsby said, citing data from an extensive survey of more than 30,000 past passengers.

Early booking bonus

Fares for the newly announced Grand World Voyage won't be announced until May, when the sailing goes on sale to the general public. But Holland America on Monday said it would offer an early booking bonus of up to $2,000 per person in onboard credit and a free Wi-Fi Surf package to those who book the sailing early. The company didn't specify a deadline for getting the bonus.

In addition, passengers who pay for the sailing in full will get a 3% discount on their fares.

Additional perks for passengers who book early will include a $500-per-person air credit when booking air through Holland America's Flight Ease program and complimentary round-trip airport transfers to and from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

Passengers also will get complimentary luggage delivery service to and from the Fort Lauderdale airport, prepaid gratuities (called "crew appreciation" fees at Holland America) and included laundry and dry cleaning service when booking certain cabin categories.

While the voyage won't be available to book until May, would-be passengers can reserve a spot now through May by making a future cruise request from Holland America's World Cruise Reservations team at 800-522-3399 or through their travel adviser.

7 continents in 4 months: Holland America Line reveals 2026 world cruise

cruise america albuquerque

If visiting all seven continents is on your travel bucket list, a new cruise from Holland America Line will make it easy for you.

The cruise line’s 2026 Grand World Voyage will traverse the globe over 132 days, stopping at 47 ports in 39 countries. Passengers just have to get themselves to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the trip’s round-trip departure point.

“We asked thousands of past guests and travel advisors for their opinions about the perfect Grand World Voyage, so this may be one of our most thoroughly researched routes ever for a world cruise,” Holland America’s president, Gus Antorcha, said when announcing the itinerary to guests currently sailing on the line’s 2024 Grand World Voyage on Monday, according to a news release. “This itinerary includes destinations we know guests love, packed with memorable moments and overnight stays."

When is the 2026 Grand World Voyage?

The cruise will set sail on Jan. 4, 2026, on the line’s 1,432-guest Volendam ship which launched in 1999.

Where will the cruise sail?

Antorcha said the cruise will visit fewer ports than previous Grand World Voyages “to allow more time to explore the destinations we visit and to create a voyage that does not feel rushed.”

Passengers will head down South America’s east coast before making their way to Antarctica. There, they will have a four-day Antarctic Experience (though guests won’t disembark due to the ship’s size ).

The ship will then head to destinations like the South Pacific and Australia, with time to explore the Great Barrier Reef. The remainder of the voyage includes Singapore, the Maldives , the Mediterranean and northern Europe. The trip will wind down with a transatlantic crossing before one last stop in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Passengers will stay overnight at nine ports, including Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Sydney, Australia; Bali in Indonesia and Alexandria, Egypt. There will also be five late-night departures in Civitavecchia, Italy, Oslo, Norway, and San Juan, among others.

Other highlights include visits to Easter Island, Adamstown in the Pitcairn Islands, and Bordeaux, France.

What is a world cruise?: Here's what sets the months-long voyages apart

How much does the cruise cost?

Pricing info is not yet available, but an inside cabin on the line's 2025 Grand World Voyage currently starts at $24,999.

Travelers can call 1-800-522-3399 or contact their travel adviser to make a future cruise request for the 2026 itinerary and get priority booking confirmation before the cruise opens for sale to the public in May.

Holland America wants travelers to live on a cruise ship for 4 ½ months while it sails to 39 countries on all 7 continents — see what it'll be like

  • Holland America Line announced a 2026 around-the-world cruise .
  • The 132-day itinerary includes 47 ports in 39 countries on all seven continents.
  • Longer sailings like this one are all the rage right now.

Insider Today

In 2026, the only flight you'll have to take to visit 39 countries in less than half a year is the one from your home to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The catch? From there, you can travel around the world on a 25-year-old ship.

If the concept sounds familiar, it's probably because you're thinking of Royal Caribbean's nine-month Ultimate World Cruise , one of TikTok's first obsessions in 2024.

Royal Caribbean's around-the-world sailing isn't a one-off. Quite the opposite: It's part of a growing interest in longer cruises.

And companies like Holland America have taken note of this shift. To satisfy travelers' appetite for extended sailings, the cruise line released a slate of itineraries ranging from 25 to 59 days long this time last year. Most are set to sail roundtrip, to, or from North America.

But none of these one to two-month cruises compare to the cruise line's new 2026 "Grand World Voyage," a whopping 4 ½-month journey to all seven continents.

cruise america albuquerque

Holland America says its 1,432-guest Volendam ship will set sail in January 2026 on an "east-to-west route" from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to 47 ports in 39 countries on all seven continents.

From sunny Florida, the ship will sail down to chilly Antarctica by way of eastern South America.

cruise america albuquerque

Volendam is scheduled to spend four days around Antarctica. Good luck on the infamous Drake Passage .

The icy destination isn't common on most around-the-world itineraries. But the cruise line seems partial to it: Holland America's 133-day "pole-to-pole" cruise , sailing to Antarctica and the Arctic Circle, is scheduled for January 2025.

From the itinerary's southernmost destination, the ship is set to venture back north to the South Pacific Islands like Easter Island, New Zealand, and Australia.

cruise america albuquerque

Then, it will set sail to Southeast and South Asia, the Maldives, and Egypt before its final few stops around northern Europe.

With the exception of two ports in Egypt, the Middle East and Africa have been largely left off the 132-day plan.

Almost 4 ½ months and 39 countries later, the journey will conclude back in Fort Lauderdale.

cruise america albuquerque

It's a long itinerary for a compact ship: The 781-foot-long Volendam is one of Holland America's smallest and oldest vessels.

Compared to this older counterpart, Holland America's newest ship, the Rotterdam, is almost 200 feet longer and can accommodate 1,236 more guests. However, the cruise line tapped a ship of Volendam's size to give guests a more "intimate experience."

Holland America's vessel of choice is larger than the ones being used by more luxurious companies Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, and Silversea's 2024 world cruises, which all have guest capacities of less than 700 people.

cruise america albuquerque

But the Volendam is still significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's Ultimate World Cruise vessel of choice: The 965-foot-long, 2,476-guest Serenade of the Seas .

And unlike Royal Caribbean's new mega-ships , the Volendam has no waterslides or wild rides. Instead, the 10-deck vessel features six restaurants (including a café), five bars, two pools, and activities like pickleball courts.

Compared to other global itineraries, Holland America’s 47-port world cruise might seem light.

cruise america albuquerque

Ultra-luxury Regent Seven Seas and Silversea's ongoing 4 ½-month world cruises each include at least 65 ports.

But busier doesn't always mean better.

cruise america albuquerque

Guests will have more time to spend at the scheduled ports by sacrificing additional destinations, Gus Antorcha, Holland America's president, said in a news release. (The ship is scheduled for overnights at nine popular destinations, including Bali, Indonesia, and Papeete, Tahiti.)

A spokesperson for Holland America told Business Insider that details about the itinerary's fares aren't available yet.
