Montana Fly Fishing

Our waterways are world-renowned and people travel from all over to take part in some of the best fishing in the world. Though fly fishing brings tourists from all over, our rivers are far less crowded than most states. The population of the entire state of Montana barely exceeds a million people. That means we have miles and miles of river to share with few people. Anglers and other tourists are vital to Montana’s economy, so locals work to meet the needs of visitors.

Do you want to ‘fish off the top,’ to watch a large trout rise from the bottom of the clear river to eat your fly off the top of the water? Do you want to hear the squeal of your reel while a trout takes off with your fly and fights to shake loose from your line? Do you want to do this while floating down a pristine river with unbelievable scenery, perfect weather, fish amazing water in a drift boat in the middle of Montana? This is what angler dreams are made of!

Montana Fishing Trips

Are you excited to spend a full day out on the water? Do you want to spend half a day fishing and the other half hiking Glacier National Park? Or is your intention to spend a full weekend headhunting Montana trout?

Montana Fishing Information

It is the job of a qualified and knowledgeable guide to stay current on all regulations and know how to identify fish appropriately. If you are visiting or new to Montana, hire a professional to help you. Besides fishing regulations Montana Fishing Guides is knowledgable on the feeding behavior of our fish. Bug activity is dictated by the time of year, weather conditions and time of day. Every week, every day and every section of river has the potential for differing bug activity. If you’re not on the river everyday then you’re guessing on what flies to use. Montana Fishing Guides has the local knowledge to match the hatch with the flies that the fish want to eat.

Plus, Montana’s fishing seasons are dictated by intense weather patterns. Winter freezes the mountain tops and holds large bodies of ice, then spring comes and the ice turns into rushing run-off that floods and muddies the rivers and streams. Rivers that are ideal fishing locations can be incredibly fast and dangerous to navigate. Local guides are familiar with these patterns, know what to look for, and know-how to ‘scout’ the rivers to ensure safety. We have the experience and the local knowledge to guide you on a safe and picture-perfect fishing adventure.

Please refer to our Gear Guide for more information.

When is the best time to come fly fishing in Montana?

Whenever you can make it! But to break it down simply March, April, May, October, and November you can expect low angling pressure, great fishing, but variable weather. June, July, August, and September are prime time: fly fishing is great, especially the dry fly bite, and weather is generally reliable. We have put together a fishing calendar that addresses all things fly fishing in Montana you may want to consult for more detail  here .

Where are the best places to stay and eat in Montana?

What should I wear on a guided fly fishing trip?

Great question! Every angler should come prepared with sunglasses, hat, and suitable clothing and footwear everyday. In the Spring and Fall this means dressing warm in quick drying layers. Bring waders, wading boots, good rain gear, gloves and a warm hat. During the summer this means dressing cool in sun protective lightweight fishing clothes. We recommend long sleeves, pants, and water-friendly shoes. For some this means a tank top and bathing suit. Always be prepared for inclement weather. We have seen it snow every month of the year. Keep an eye on the forecast as your trip nears and pack accordingly.

Float your way on the water with your guide and get ready for an action-packed day of Montana fishing from one of the best guides around! On this fly-fishing trip, you'll be floating down the Missouri River to target some Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout. The Missouri River is recommended for experienced fly fishers who are looking for a challenge that will pay off with some bigger fish. The upper stretch of the Missouri River (the “Mighty Mo”) from Toston, MT, to Townsend, MT, has very calm moving water with large, easily spooked Rainbow and Brown Trout. Just the sound of the line hitting the water can scare away these fish, so be prepared to make some smooth casts. Once you get down the technique, you can expect 20-plus inch Trout. Anglers looking for an even bigger challenge can target the Common Carp, which is becoming increasingly sought after in this river. On this half or full-day excursion, your guide will row you where you need to be in a maneuverable drift boat as you take in the beautiful scenery. From here, your guide will give you expert fly-fishing tips and let you try your luck. Drift boats allow anglers to cover a larger area and access places that may be unsafe for wading. Whether you're new to fly fishing or not, your guide is eager to teach and will get some fish on your line! Regardless of where you are staying – Bozeman, Ennis, Cameron, Helena, Livingston, West Yellowstone, or Fort Smith, Montana – We have you covered. Your guide(s) will be able to pick you up at your vacation rental, lodge, hotel, campsite, or the airport. If your place of lodging is out of the way, just meet your guide at a convenient location for your day(s) on the water. Your guide will provide all the rods, reels, flies, and tippet you need to get out on the water and catch some fish. They will even have a tasty lunch for all guests. Let them know when booking if you will need to rent waders and wading boots, which he will provide at an additional cost. All you need to bring is a valid Montana fishing license. A hat, sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and a rain jacket are recommended. Enjoy your day out on the water with your guide! **We have several listings for float trips at nearby locations in the Bozeman / Yellowstone National Park area. They want you to have the best experience possible, so if the fishing is better in another lake or river, they may recommend another location. Missouri River Float Trip

Float your way on the water with your guide and get ready for an action-packed day of Montana fishing from one of the best guides around! On this fly-fishing trip, you'll be floating down the Bighorn River to target some Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout. Offering year-round fly fishing, the Bighorn is considered the cream of the crop, not only in Montana but in the fly fishing world! In the first 13 miles from the Afterbay to Bighorn fishing access, the fish average 14 inches, though it’s not uncommon to take Trout over 20 inches. With all this excellent fishing, it can be hard to find a time when you are the only boat on the river, especially during the summer months. To avoid the crowds, We recommend floating from November through April. The Bighorn River is a fertile tailwater fishery with a high fish-per-mile population. Using a drift boat allows you and your guide to jump from spot to spot, not only fishing from the boat but also stopping to wade fish several runs holding numerous rainbows and browns. All guided trips on the Bighorn are two-day minimums from November 1st through April. On this half or full-day excursion, Nate will row you where you need to be in a maneuverable drift boat as you take in the beautiful scenery. From here he'll give you some of his expert fly-fishing tips and let you try your luck. Drift boats allow anglers to cover a larger area and access places that may be unsafe for wading. Wade your way into the water with one of our guides and get ready for an action-packed day of Yellowstone Park fishing from one of the best guides around! On this fly-fishing trip, you'll be wading into the Madison River from the grounds within Yellowstone National Park to target some Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout. The Madison River hosts wild Rainbow and Brown trout ranging in size from 10″ to 28″ at an average length of 18″. The Fall spawning run out of Hebgen Lake will give you some of the best fish. In October through November, expect to see big Browns and Rainbows averaging 19 inches with the occasional 28″ Brown Trout. If you go fishing out here in the fall, be ready for winter conditions, where temperatures can drop below zero on any given day. The Madison River in Yellowstone National Park opens to fishing on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend each year and stays open through October 31 each year. We recommend waiting until the river clears up in early-mid June. Once the conditions are favorable, you can take advantage of the famous salmon fly hatch to catch a nice Brown Trout on a dry fly. Some other hatches that may be more productive depending on the day include Pale Morning Duns, Baetis, and Caddis. Your guide will quickly figure out which one the fish are targeting when you fish with him! On these full-day excursions, your guide will wade you into the river from one of the Yellowstone Park access points. From here, your guide will give you some expert fly-fishing tips and let you try your luck. Whether you're new to fly fishing or not, your guide is eager to teach and will get some fish on your line! Missoula Montana offers a slew of incredible blue-ribbon rivers within a short distance from downtown. Mike and his guides know the Bitterroot, the Blackfoot, and the Clarks Fork rivers like the back of their hands and fish them all based on what river is fishing best. Generally, the hatches on each of the rivers rotate and trade-off perfectly so there is always action to chase in the vicinity. Mike's outfit and his slew of incredible guides are committed to offering you the highest quality Montana fly fishing experience available. He and his experienced guides will row the extra mile to ensure this fishing trip is one you’ll remember for a lifetime. They will provide all the terminal tackle (flies, tippet, floatant, etc). They've got you covered on rods and reels if you need them and will provide a gourmet on the river lunch for you as well. Rivers in the Area: **The Bitterroot River** in southwest Montana is a dry fly fishery. Not many rivers in the west can claim such a statement, but the “Root” is a unique stream. The fact that the infamous Purple Haze dry fly pattern was developed/invented by a long-time Bitterroot guide tells you that it’s a special place. A float trip down the Bitterroot River never disappoints and the scenery and caliber of fishing are hard to beat. Although the Root can fish well in the winter months the real start to the season here is March and April with the world-famous Skwala stonefly hatch. This event is one of the few places in the west that offers the angler a chance at catching nice-sized trout on size 10 or bigger dry flies in early spring. March Browns and Blue Winged Olive Mayflies also make a daily appearance and can offer outstanding topwater action. The river is characterized by cobblestone runs, deep pools, and woody debris that hold large Rainbow, Cutthroats, and Brown trout. Summer See’s the usual hatches of PMD’s, Sallies, and Tricos with Grasshoppers keeping trout looking up well into October. The fall is also a special time on the Root, with cooler weather and Mahogany dun mayflies and Hecuba drake’s offering the last substantial meal for trout before winter sets in. **The Blackfoot** is on every fly fisherman’s bucket list, and deservedly so. Blackfoot River Fly Fishing is an angler’s dream come true. A true classic western freestone river and its hatches are impressive: the Giant Salmon Fly, Golden Stones, PMDs, terrestrials, are just some of the hatches you’ll find on the Blackfoot. Come fish the Blackfoot River with Fishtales Outfitting and you’ll want to come back every year! The Blackfoot River or as it’s sometimes called the Big Blackfoot as to distinguish it from the Little Blackfoot in western Montana near Missoula is a truly special place. The Nez Perce of Idaho found this route as the way to the Upper Missouri Basin to hunt buffalo. The Nez Perce name for the Blackfoot is Cokahahalishkit which means river of the road to buffalo. A diverse and dynamic fishery fed by snowpack and springs with all of the main trout species present. Depending on the time of year, you have a shot at a Blackfoot “Grand Slam” catching a rainbow, cutthroat, brown, brook, cut-bow. The Blackfoot is characterized by large boulders and pocket water that’s stuffed with wild trout and offers an exciting float trip with outstanding hopper/dropper fishing throughout the summer. Many reaches of the Blackfoot River offer a beautiful wilderness setting with little development on its banks, plenty of wildlife, great trout fishing, and gorgeous scenery to add to the experience! **The Clark Fork River** is one of Montana’s best-kept secrets, hidden in plain sight. Many anglers drive by it on their way to fish other famous Montana rivers like the Bitterroot or Blackfoot. We at Fishtales Outfitting love elbow room and great trout fishing, we think you’ll agree! The largest river in Montana by volume it begins its 310-mile journey near the town of Butte MT, and as it meanders its way towards its terminus at Lake Pend Oreille it offers hundreds of miles of floatable water. The upper river is a smaller stream with many diverse types of water that mostly holds Brown trout and the occasional Westslope Cutthroat. This is fantastic streamer water with a legitimate shot at a trophy Brown. As the river heads west along I-90 towards Missoula it gains volume from many tributaries and becomes a large freestone river in a heavily forested corridor. This lower zone is a dry fly fishery that can rival the best hatches on the Missouri River. Large Rainbow, Cutthroats, and hybrid Cut-bows dominate the water here and eagerly come to the surface to devour the many species of mayflies that hatch here. The lower river also offers the added bonus of being a trophy Northern Pike fishery with some research showing fish of 45″ or better, which can be an exciting change of pace from trout fishing. The Clark Fork is typically pretty low on the visiting anglers’ list of rivers to float fish which makes it one of the lesser crowded in all of western Montana. Read More

Head out with Dan, aka "Rooster," for an action-packed overnight fishing trip in Twin Bridges, Montana! This area of Southwest Montana is home of the Big Hole, Beaverhead, Ruby, Madison, and Jefferson Rivers. Experience world-class fly fishing, accommodations, fly shop, and guides located in the heart of Montana's Blue Ribbon Trout Country! Rooster and his team's goal is simple, to give you an experience you will never forget. With the best in the business Montana fly fishing guides, they have packages for all anglers. Stay at the Stonefly Inn, bring your fly rod, your buddy or spouse, and do a self-guided trip and they are happy to point you in the right direction. Rooster and his team consists of a very diverse, seasoned guide staff - one that has been cultivated over the last 15 years. Whether you are a beginner or experienced angler, they make sure to pair you up accordingly. While everyone has their niche - these guides have a very good sense of teamwork and will stop at nothing to make certain you walk away a better fisherman than when you arrived. **Available Waters:** The Big Hole River - Fed by three different mountain ranges, dozens of freestone creeks and flowing over 100 miles, the Big Hole River is one of those places you just can't get off your mind. Often referred to as "The Last Best River", the Big Hole fishes well from ice out in April until the winter weather hits in November. Limited outfitter use makes this river a first choice for many guest anglers. The Beaverhead River - One of the three great tailwaters in Big Sky Country. Stable water flows, dense populations of trout, and great insect life make this river a great option almost any time of year. Multiple spring creek influxes below Dillon create some great clear water opportunities to fish dry flies during the heat of the summer. Big browns on hoppers. A great river to fly fish. The Madison River - They say you have to have an ace in the hole. If Rooster had to pick a river to fit that bill, it would be the "Maddy". Astonishing numbers of trout and good water flows through the summer months keep the rods bent when fishing might be tough elsewhere. The Jefferson River - Formed in Twin Bridges by the confluence of the Big Hole, Beaverhead, and Ruby Rivers, the Jefferson flows northbound over eighty miles to the confluence of the Madison and Gallatin Rivers to form the Missouri. Receiving less pressure than any of the others, this is one of those fisheries that you have to see to believe. The Ruby River - As our friends refer to secret spots - the Ruby River is a "sleeper". From the dam to Twin Bridges there is over 40 miles of twisting, turning trout water. Good public access makes this a great place to spend an afternoon before, during or after your trip. **Seasons:** There are three main seasons when it comes to Montana fishing. Get your line in the water when the fish are most hungry in the peak season, or get world-class fishing at a discount in the shoulder season. Early season (Shoulder) - April, May, and June – The Rocky Mountains can deliver some pretty severe weather during these early months of the fishing season. You should plan accordingly, and realize that the weather can be here today - gone tomorrow. You will want breathable waders, felt or rubber soled boots, raingear, layers of fleece, gloves, hats, glasses and hats. We could also have summer weather as early as late May, so make sure to pack a couple pairs of shorts and your favorite fishing shirt. Summer season (Peak) - June, July, August, and September - With the summer upon us, you can expect temperatures to range from cool in the early a.m. to downright hot in the afternoons. Long sleeve fishing shirts, broad billed hats, and polarized sunglasses can relieve some of the summer sun. Although shorts and wading sandals are the norm, summer thunderstorms are common in SW Montana, so always have a light rain jacket in your gear bag. Fall season (Shoulder) - September, October and November - As the summer winds to a close, we say goodbye to the dog days and welcome cooler mornings and warm afternoons. September is hopper month in these parts, so a stout 6 wt. is a good choice. By the middle of September the water temps have fallen to the point that you’ll likely be more comfortable wearing waders. For those that plan an October trip to Montana, your gear bag should include layers of fleece, raingear, a warm hat, gloves and of course a good pair of glasses. **Lodging:** For those wanting a true Western fly fishing experience, The Stonefly Inn is the perfect choice. Located in the heart of Twin Bridges on Main Street, minutes from world class rivers that offer the best trout fishing in Montana. These all-inclusive packages cover all Montana farm-to-table meals cooked by an awesome chef, lodging in one of the cabins, guided fishing, flies, rods, reels, all terminal tackle. The recently renovated cabins have upgraded mattresses, new linens and furnishings. The common area is a great gathering place with comfortable seating, TV, screened porch, dining tables, bar. The outdoor fireplace area is a favorite among guests, a great place to hang out in the evenings and they keep it stocked with firewood all season. You have full use of the on site amenities when you book with Rooster and his team. Their fly shop is also located on the property if you need supplies. **Rod, Line and Fly Recommendations:** Rooster and his gang strongly recommend a 9ft or 9.5ft, 6 weight rod. A 5 weight will do almost anything a 6 will, but you might have to work harder to get the fly to the fish in the wind. And yes, the wind has been known to blow out in the Rocky Mountains! They prefer WF lines. Their favorites are the Scientific Anglers Sharkwave and Trout Stalker. When it comes to leaders, anything 7.5ft 2,3 & 4X class will work fine. When you fish with them, the flies are included in your package, and they have plenty of them. Their guides carry hundreds if not thousands of the patterns that work on their local waters and their shop bins are fully stocked with tried and true flies. However, if you would like to tie some flies of your own, they recommend giving the shop a call and they can advise you further. In the meantime you can rarely go wrong with these: 1. Chubby Chernobyl – Peach, Orange, Purple, Tan, size 6-12 2. Prince Nymph – tungsten beads are better, CDC Collars are great, size 12-16 3. Pat’s Stone – Tan, Brown, Black and Olive, size 4-12 4. Pheasant tail – Tungsten, no flashback, size 12-20 **Montana Fishing License Requirements:** You will need to purchase a conservation license, along with a fishing license that will cover the amount of days you plan on fishing. They are sold in 2’s and 10’s as well as a full season. Rooster recommends purchasing your license online prior to arrival, as they are not a license agent – it will help expedite getting you on the river! **Food and Drink:** Your dining experience is certain to be a highlight of your fishing trip! Rooster and his team strive to accommodate all dietary restrictions. If you require any special dietary consideration or have food allergies please do let them know and they will make sure your needs are provided for. They generally serve wine with dinner. If you are someone that enjoys an evening cocktail or beer, there is a liquor store a few doors down that is well stocked. Many guests provide a bottle or 2 to share with their fellow anglers during the course of their stay at Stonefly. Read More

Overnight Day Trip (Peak Season)

Float from Pine Butte down to Lyons Bridge on the Upper Madison to get away from the crowds and access lower-pressure sections of the river. They call the Madison river ""The 50 Mile Riffle"" as it babbles smoothly down out of Reynolds pass, offering fantastic wading opportunities for the entire stretch of river. The upper portion of the river stays cool throughout the hot summer months as cold water is released from the Hegben Lake Dam, attracting tons of recreational (solo) fishermen to this area. Thus most of the pedestrian access points see a lot of traffic. This trip combines the best of both worlds for those looking to dissect sections of the river on foot. The section of the river above Lyons Bridge cannot actually be fished from the boat and can only be fished on foot; thus, your guide will float you down the river to the best spots and anchor up the drift boat to hone in on the best sections of the river! The Madison River hosts wild rainbow and brown trout ranging in size from 10″ to monsters reaching up to 28″ with an average length of 15″. The Fall spawning run out of Hebgen Lake will give you some of the best fish. In October through November, expect to see big Browns and Rainbows averaging 19 inches with the occasional 28″ Brown Trout. If you go fishing out here in the fall, be ready for winter conditions where temperatures can drop below zero on any given day, and in the summer, be sure to prepare for rain showers as they can pop up out of nowhere! But as they say in Montana: ""If you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes!"" Regardless of where you are staying – Bozeman, Ennis, Cameron, Helena, Livingston, West Yellowstone or Fort Smith, Montana – We have you covered. Their guides will be able to pick you up at your vacation rental, lodge, hotel, campsite, or the airport. If your place of lodging is out of the way, just meet your guide at a convenient location for your day(s) on the water. The guides will provide all the rods, reels, flies and tippet you need to get out on the water and catch some fish. They will even have a tasty lunch for all guests. Let us know when booking if you will need to rent waders and wading boots, which they will provide at an additional cost. All you need to bring is a valid Montana Fishing license. A hat, sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and a rain jacket are recommended. Enjoy your day out on the water with one of our guides! **Nate has several listings for float trips at nearby locations in the Bozeman / Yellowstone National Park area. He wants you to have the best experience possible, so if the fishing is better in another lake or river he may recommend another location. Whether you want to stick with this spot or hear about other spots, feel free to book your float trip on this listing and he will get in contact with you about the details!** Read More

Offering year-round fly fishing, the Bighorn is considered the cream of the crop, not only in Montana but in the fly fishing world! Meet up on the Mighty Mo (Missouri River) for an awesome Jet Boat trip chasing Monster Rainbows and Big Browns on a blue ribbon tailwater with your pro guide Ikaika. Expect big, and very calm, moving water which is usually pretty difficult to cover in a drift boat, but with a jet boat to motor you around you will have much more flexibility to hit all the best spots on the river (multiple times even!). This river is known for its extremely large fish and is located in the Gates of the Mountains where Lewis and Clark Rowed through themselves exploring the West. The average size fish is ~17-18in and there are really great chances at 20+ inch fish all over. On this full-day excursion, Ikaika will use his jet boat to motor upriver, shut down the motor, and row you through the premium canyon runs over and over again. This technique will allow you to access water that is too deep to wade fish and allow you to really hone in on the best runs. From here he'll give you some of his expert fly-fishing tips and let you try your luck. Whether you're new to fly fishing or not, Ikaika is eager to teach and will get some fish on your line! Float your way on the water with your guide and get ready for an action-packed day of Montana fishing from one of the best guides around! On this fly-fishing trip, you'll be rowing out into Lake Ennis to target some Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout. Lake Ennis offers great sight fishing for Rainbow and Brown Trout. Casting accurately at the fish is most productive but not necessary. With its shallow waters, you can either fish directly from the drift boat or fish on the flats with your waders. Occasionally with your guide you will start off casting to rising trout on Ennis lake and transition to fly fishing the Madison River in the afternoon. Fishing starts in Ennis Lake when the ice melts in mid-February to mid-March, offering mostly rainbow and brown trout averaging 14″-16″, and larger trout in the 18″-24″ range are not uncommon. In the summer months, large browns and rainbows (""gulpers"") cruise the lake subsurface, rising to catch mayflies and creating a ""gulping"" sound. The warmer months of August into September can present a great opportunity to spend a couple of hours chasing gulpers. Fishing Ennis Lake in the fall, mid-September through October can be a great opportunity to catch a larger-than-average brown trout. On this half or full-day excursion, your guide will row you where you need to be in a maneuverable drift boat as you take in the beautiful scenery. From here, your guide will give you some expert fly-fishing tips and let you try your luck. The bustling college town of Bozeman Montana serves as a hub to access an incredible slew of Blue Ribbon rivers throughout the local Gallatin Valley, and beyond. Right there in the Gallatin Valley you have the Gallatin River, the Lower Madison, and the Jefferson river all three of which flow in from different directions to meet up in Three Forks to form the headwaters of the Missouri River. Only a short distance to the east of Bozeman you've got the Yellowstone river with big flows, big hatches, and even bigger fish! The upper Maddison--known as the 50 Mile Riffle--only a 1.5-2 hour drive as well. Your destination for the day will depend on where your staying and which river is fishing best. Mike's outfit and his slew of incredible guides are committed to offering you the highest quality Montana fly fishing experience available. He and his experienced guides will row the extra mile to ensure this fishing trip is one you’ll remember for a lifetime. The will provide all the terminal tackle (flies, tippet, floatant, etc). They've got you covered on rods and reels if you need them and will provide a gourmet on the river lunch for you as well. Floating **The Jefferson River** is reminiscent of what Montana was generations ago: solitude, sweeping mountain views, ample wildlife, and super-model trout. By Montana standards, the Jefferson may not be the fish factory that other rivers are, but she delivers with a voice that few other rivers possess as she flows north and east 77 miles, meandering its way through pastures and farmland, eventually joining the Madison and Gallatin Rivers in Three Forks to form the Missouri. The Jefferson River has a similar feel as the lower Big Hole with its soft riffles, long runs, and cottonwood log jams left behind from high water. Flanked by the Highland Mountains to the west and the Tobacco Roots to the east, the river changes course and channels regularly here as a freestone river should, and lends itself nicely to drift boat fishing. Down river hatches range from caddis, PMD’s and Yellow Sallies to even Brown Drakes. The best dry fly patterns, water conditions permitting, are likely summer Stones or Hoppers, but the Jeff’s reputation as trophy brown trout water was built on knowing how to trigger the predatory nature of these carnivores. Stripping, and swimming streamers of all manner work wonders. Your guide will teach the needed streamer techniques to entice a hog from his hiding place. If its elbow room and a chance at a really big beautiful brown trout is you seek, join us on a Jefferson River fly fishing trip. **The Madison** has reached legendary status for every fly fisherman, and deservedly so. A blend of freestone and tailwater, it’s hatches are impressive: swarms of Mother’s Day caddis, PMDs, terrestrials, and the mighty Salmon Fly are all on the menu for these hungry trout. With 5000+ browns and rainbows per mile in the Pine Butte section and 2500+ residing in its swift currents throughout the rest of the river, the Madison is stuffed with wild trout. The Madison may look like a simple float and cast-to-the-bank river, but truly she is the siren of Southwest Montana’s rivers. To uncover her secrets takes time, discipline, and many years of experience. Mike and his Guides know this well and they’ll prove it to you by coaxing impressive trout from lies that you would think no sizable trout would ever think to call home. The Madison River is born inside Yellowstone Park at the junction of the Gibbon and Firehole Rivers. It flows 140 miles due north, where it is joined by the Gallatin and Jefferson Rivers to form the Missouri River in Three Forks Montana. It’s from Lyon’s Bridge down to Ennis that many anglers have nicknamed “The Fifty Mile Riffle”. The braided water below Varney Bridge, through the Valley Garden into Ennis Lake, is very different from the single-channel river above, with countless side channels and out-of-the-way spots for large, wild trout to hide. The Madison River enters Ennis Lake – formed by the dam built in 1906 – then rips through the seven-mile Bear Trap Canyon Wilderness Unit. Finally, flowing northward another 28 miles to meet the Gallatin and Jefferson Rivers in Three Forks to form the Missouri River. Join FishTales Outfitting for a fantastic Madison River fly fishing trip that you’ll never forget! The Yellowstone River is one of the greatest trout streams of the world and holds the title for the longest undammed, known as a ‘freestone’ river in the lower 48 states. There is outstanding trout water from its tributaries high inside Yellowstone Park, downstream through Gardiner, the Paradise Valley, Livingston, and down below Big Timber; a total of almost two hundred river miles. We float fish in several different sections of the prime trout water between Gardiner and Big Timber, depending on the time of year, water conditions, and water levels. Highway 89 takes you through the Paradise Valley to the town of Gardiner, the Gateway to Yellowstone National Park. The Yellowstone is a large river varying from 75 to 300 feet. in width. It is wadable later in the summer when flows drop but there is no question it is best fished from a drift boat. You’ll see much more water to present your fly which increases your opportunities to catch fish. The section through “Paradise Valley” is the most scenic and this is also some of the best Montana fly fishing. The sections closer to Livingston holds the highest numbers of trout. Here you’ll find a healthy mix of browns, rainbows, and our native Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout, and Rocky Mountain Whitefish. The Yellowstone’s hatch list includes Mother’s Day Caddis, Salmon flies, Pale Morning Duns, Yellow Sallie’s, Summer Stones, and terrestrials. The Yellowstone offers diverse types of holding water, from the fast pocket water at Tom Miner Bridge to Point Of Rocks where the gradient lessens and the river changes to more long, deep pools with wide riffles and wide, flat tailouts. Downstream past Mallards rest through Paradise Valley is where the spring creeks join the river. This section is one of the most popular with breathtaking views of the Absaroka to the east and Gallatin mountains to the west. The section through Livingston known as the “town run” is a local favorite and offers some great wade fishing opportunities once the flows have dropped later in the summer. Read More

Float your way on the water with your guide and get ready for an action-packed day of Montana fishing from one of the best guides around! On this fly-fishing trip, you'll be floating down the Jefferson River to target some Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout. The Jefferson River is not all about fish numbers. The ""Jeff"" is about solitude and getting away from the crowds for a shot at a trophy fish! Streamers, dry flies, or nymphs are all successful techniques used on the Jefferson River. Fishing the Jefferson is best in March, April, and into May during pre-runoff. The spring offers some incredible hatches with species such as March Browns, Caddis, Skwalla’s, and Blue Winged Olives (Baetis). The late summer months into the fall can be productive with terrestrials such as grasshoppers, beetles, or ants. In the Fall months of October and November, the “Jeff” can offer up big browns. Because the brown trout are more vulnerable during the pre-spawn period, they are willing to eat a streamer that is invading their space. If you’re looking for a scenic float away from some of the higher-pressure rivers then consider a day on the Jefferson! On this half or full-day excursion, your guide will row you where you need to be in a maneuverable drift boat as you take in the beautiful scenery. Jet your way on the water with your guide and get ready for an action-packed day of Montana fishing from one of the best guides around! On this fly-fishing trip, you'll be propelling yourself up and down the Yellowstone River to target some Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout. The longest free-flowing river in the lower 48 states, the Yellowstone River is most effectively fished from a drift boat or jet boat due to its size. Its fishing season typically starts later than tailwaters like the Madison, Bighorn, and Missouri Rivers. We recommend that every angler experience the incredible scenery and quality trout fishing of this river at least once. From Emigrant, Montana to Livingston, the Yellowstone offers a variety of species such as Rainbows, Browns, Cutthroats, Cutbows, and Mountain Whitefish. The region from Livingston, Montana, downriver to Columbus, Montana, may not be as scenic, but it is home to some larger-than-average brown trout! This stretch of river offers outstanding terrestrial fly fishing because the river cuts through miles of hay fields loaded with grasshoppers. On this full-day excursion, your U.S. Coast Guard-certified guide will use the jet boat to motor upriver, shut down the motor, and row you through the premium runs over and over again. This technique will allow you to access water that is too deep or dangerous to wade fish. From here your guide will give you some expert fly-fishing tips and let you try your luck. Whether you're new to fly fishing or not, your guide is eager to teach and will get some fish on your line! Thanks again for a great day of fishing; probably the best guided fishing I have had in Montana. Making plans for next year! B.A Rucker
I did the Montana Fly Fishing Tour with Scott. We fished the Bitterroot, Blackfoot, Missouri, Madison and Yellowstone rivers on consecutive days… I really want to get back to the Bitterroot sometime with Scott to drift a nymph down through some of those runs again because I just know there has to be a good fish just waiting there for me to catch. MVR receives high kudos for their handling of virus related safety protocols during our stay. The safety measures were executed so smoothly that our visit was as positive and uplifting as always. We have stayed at other Orvis endorsed lodges, all of which have been excellent in keeping with Orvis standards, but MVR is even a cut above.

BOULDER RIVER

montana fishing tours

We describe our Boulder River fly fishing trips as half fishing half raft trip – in other words exciting fly fishing.

While your guide expertly rows the raft through class I, II & III rapids you’ll be hitting the pocket water in this fast paced fly fishing adventure. The Boulder River is a Blue Ribbon trout stream with quality rainbow and brown trout. This may be one of the best dry fly small streams in all of Montana. It has unusual purity giving it a unique clarity and beauty. Fly fishing the Boulder River depends on water levels and is typically floatable between late July and early August.

BEST TIME TO FISH THE BOULDER RIVER

Gallatin river.

montana fishing tours

The Gallatin River, near Bozeman Montana is small in size, which to many means little fish, but not so on this hidden gem.

This is a classic small Montana stream with shallow riffles leading to long runs and deep pools with undercut banks. Typically this is a hunting ground for large brown and rainbow trout using streamers and large crawfish patterns. We typically float the Gallatin River in a raft or drift boat due to the many braids and channels – it’s a long day of fishing, but it can be very rewarding for those anglers looking for that 20+ inch trout.

BEST TIME TO FISH THE GALLATIN RIVER

Madison river.

montana fishing tours

Want a famed Madison River fishing trip?

The Madison River originates in Yellowstone National Park and flows nearly 150 miles before joining the headwaters of the Missouri river. The Madison river fishing is divided into the upper stretch and lower stretch each of which seems to be completely different waters. Both the Upper Madison and Lower Madison are some of Montana’s premier wild trout rivers and it has been classified as a “Blue Ribbon” trout stream. Every foot of the river is capable of producing rainbow and brown trout eager to rise to a dry fly, grab a drifting nymph or a swinging streamer.

It boasted the highest trout population in the state of Montana in 2012 with over 8,000 fish per mile and 20′′ fish are common. Obviously, chances of having a good day while Missouri River fishing are high. Not only are the fish numerous, but like most tailwaters the Missouri river is abundant in aquatic bug life, making for exceptional sight and dry fly fishing. We offer this trip only during the best fishing time of the year which is from April until early July and then again in late September into November.

BEST TIME TO FISH THE MISSOURI RIVER

Smith river.

montana fishing tours

Smith River fly fishing trips can be summed up in almost one word – secluded.

Our Smith River fly fishing trips take place on the upper section of the Smith River, between its origin and above the Smith River Fly Fishing Access Site, flows through gently rolling prairie, flanked by the tall peaks of the Big Belt Mountains and Little Belt Mountains. It is beautiful country, with sweeping wide open vistas and incredible views. Other than the small town of White Sulphur Springs, the area is also very remote. Agricultural fields surround the river in this section, with extensive brush along its bank. A number of pools are also found on this stretch. Generally, the Smith River flows at a slow to moderate pace in this section, depending on water levels.

BEST TIME TO FISH THE SMITH RIVER

montana fishing tours

The Paradise Valley Spring Creeks of Armstrong, DePuy and Nelson should be on every angler’s wish list.

These world famous creeks are a sight fishing wonderland – with consistent hatches of midges, baetis, Pale Morning Duns, and Sulphur’s anglers can test their skills against wary trout. Dry fly fishing, sight-nymphing and reach casts on 6X are useful tools to have in your angling arsenal, but don’t worry if you need a little more practice our guides will teach you these techniques and make you a better angler after just one day! Please make sure to plan ahead as these private locations have limited availability and in prime season reservations can book up to a year in advance.

BEST TIME TO FISH THE SPRING CREEKS

Stillwater river.

montana fishing tours

Don’t let the name fool you, our Stillwater River fishing trips take place on a wild and fast flowing river.

The beautiful Stillwater River begins in the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness and flows north toward the town of Columbus, Montana where fishing access sites are good. Typically fishing this stream starts by mid July and August via rafts, but good wade fishing can also be had in the early spring with very good mayfly hatches starting around early March. This is definitely a dry fly fishing river and fishing this pocket water stream with a big hopper or stonefly pattern can be awesome.

BEST TIME TO FISH THE STILLWATER RIVER

montana fishing tours

If you’re looking for trophy lake fly fishing trips then you need to check out a couple of the private trophy waters in the Livingston area.

They offer outstanding stillwater fly fishing for rainbows, browns and cutthroat trout. Fly fishing on these trophy lakes is more intense than most anglers realize. Stalking large trout and sight casting to gulpers can give even the most experienced angler the casting jitters. These trophy lakes have prolific hatches of damselflies, Callibaetis mayflies, midges and terrestrials. These lakes are also the ideal starting point for both beginner anglers and those younger anglers looking to bend the rod for the first time.

BEST TIME TO FISH THE TROPHY LAKES

Yellowstone river.

montana fishing tours

This is a classic western river and should be on every angler’s life list

Our Yellowstone River fishing trips include guiding on over 120 miles of blue ribbon trout water starting at Yellowstone National Park. The Yellowstone River is our home water and one of the great fly fishing trout streams of the world. It is the longest undammed river in the lower 48 states, and there is excellent trout water from its tributaries high inside Yellowstone Park, downstream through Gardiner, the Paradise Valley, Livingston, and on to well below Big Timber – a stretch of nearly 150 river miles. We float many different stretches of the prime water between Gardiner and Big Timber, depending on the Yellowstone River fly fishing conditions and water levels.

BEST TIME TO FISH THE YELLOWSTONE RIVER

Yellowstone national park.

Fly Fishing in Yellowstone National Park

Our Nation’s first National Park offers some of the most famous fly fishing waters in the country. Slough Creek, Soda Butte Creek, Lamar River, Yellowstone River and many other small streams are all within driving distance of Livingston, Montana. Our Yellowstone Park fly fishing guides have detailed knowledge of the waters in Yellowstone National Park and have spent decades learning these waters. They are pleased to show you some secrets to catching more trout in this amazing environment.

WHY choose Big Sky Fishing Charters / Howes Fishing?

Big Sky Fishing Charters / Howes Fishing is the largest charter boat operation in Montana, and is the home of both A Able and Mo Fisch Charters. A Able has fished Flathead Lake since 1987 and Mo Fisch since 2006. Many of today’s lake guides fished with A Able as kids, or got their start guiding here! Both companies merged in 2017.

Owner and Outfitter Chris Mischke and his wife April personally books every trip, selecting the guides, boats and location to best suit your needs. If you wish to fish with a specific guide, they will do everything they can to meet that request.

Our fleet of boats are all independently owned by the Captain(s) you are fishing with, experienced guides with a lot of “skin in the game”. They are the best team of guides available, who ALL work together to assure your enjoyment and our reputation is unmatched on the water. We fish year-round, on the open water as well as ice fishing.

Where are you located and what will we be fishing for?

While our core business is Lake Trout Charters on Flathead Lake, we fish a variety of waters within the Flathead Valley, including light tackle spin fishing for multiple species. We also offer year-round fishing on Fort Peck Reservoir in Eastern Montana and ice fishing in the winter.

During peak summer season on Flathead Lake, as water levels allow, we spare no expense so we can operate out of PRIVATE marinas in Bigfork and Lakeside. Both have private restrooms, a bar and restaurant mere feet from our boats. NO public boat launch drama here!

Our variety of offerings is unmatched by any other outfitter in the state and no matter what type of fishing you desire, we can make it happen!

We do not have an office location; our boats are our offices and while all bookings are done through our website, we will be happy to answer any questions you may have before you book, just call or use our “ask a question” tab!

What time do your trips start?

Flathead Lake peak season morning trips go from 7AM-12PM and afternoons from 1-6PM. Our guides expect to run two trips a day so no exceptions can be made for a later start.  Nonpeak start times can be adjusted more freely but typically an 8AM start is normal during off peak seasons. All other trips start times will vary based on conditions, bite windows and other factors.

Do I need a fishing license?

YES, everyone 12 years of age and older will need to obtain a Montana fishing license before starting your charter. We do not sell them on our boats (although you can get them online from anywhere you have a signal). Once you receive your confirmation, info about license vendors and online instructions are included. If you have booked a scenic tour or are just going along for the ride, and do not intend to touch a fishing pole, then you do not need a license.

What is provided?

We provide a fully equipped, cabin style boat (lake trips) and a professional guide. All your fishing tackle, fish cleaning and light snacks and cold drinks are provided. You need only bring your Montana fishing license, clothing as the weather dictates and a small cooler (you can leave in your car until the trip ends) to take your cleaned catch home. Sunglasses and a hat are always a good idea. YES, you may bring alcohol, but please drink responsibly.

Are “tips” (or gratuities) expected, and what is a “normal” tip?

Like most personal service activities, tips are a normal way of life. At a minimum, the cost of your charter includes a professionally outfitted fishing boat, quality fishing gear and all safety equipment, fuel, and the guide. You would pay equal or perhaps much more for just the boat, gear and fuel for a “do it yourself” trip and still not have the knowledge, skills and entertainment factor of a local guide, often the keys to a successful and enjoyable time on the water. With that in mind, the typical gratuity for a professional guide of any kind is 10-25% of the total cost of the trip.

Can we bring our dog?

No-Our boats are not set up for having dogs aboard, and they can be stressful environments for the dogs and our Captains. (The only exception is for a small dog that will remain in its carrier at all times.)

Do we need experience?

NO! Our Flathead Lake trips are perfect for everyone, from complete novices of just about all ages to experienced anglers alike. The Captains will take care of all the rigging, explaining everything as they do, but when the fish strike, it is all on you! (We will coach you as necessary, but you get to fight the fish to the boat). On all other trips, varying levels of experience are recommended, please discuss this ahead of your booking.

Is there an age limit?

While we enjoy having kids aboard, anglers younger than 5-7 sometimes feel frustrated that they aren’t “part of the action” due to the environment. We have to keep a close eye on fingers and hands near moving equipment, sharp objects and fast action. Please be prepared as the parent to keep a very close eye on your younger children. All children under 12 MUST wear a life jacket at all times, and especially with the younger ones, bringing their own can make it an easier experience.

Can we keep what we catch?

While we encourage all of our guests to keep a few fish for the table, which we will gladly clean and fillet for you, packing fish to “send back home” is not easily accomplished here and often not realistic like in places like Alaska. It is very expensive to pack and ship via UPS or Fed Ex, so please respect our resource and only keep what you are prepared to eat fresh, or properly freeze or smoke immediately. (On some of our trips, like for Gerrard Rainbows and large Northern Pike, we are strictly catch and release except in the case of an injured fish or having mounted) and of course we must observe any and all size and number limits.

Are there bathrooms aboard?

All of our lake boats, at a minimum, have a “Porta Potty” and privacy screen for the ladies aboard. These are “tinkle toilets” and are NOT meant for the big jobs. There are “P-buckets” for the men. Please plan accordingly for your time aboard…

How do we book a charter?

We ask everyone to use our very user friendly “Book Now” feature on our website. All bookings require advance payment. If a date is not available, we will advise the next available date. If we cannot accommodate a request, an immediate refund will be given. Any other questions can be asked through our “ask a question” tab or by calling 406-257-5214. PLEASE allow up to 2 business days for confirmation of your request.

What is your cancellation policy?

While we require full payment to reserve your trip, we fully understand that stuff happens, so we ask that you notify us, via a phone call, at least 48 hours before your trip begins if you need to cancel. 48 hour notice you will receive a full refund, 24 hour notice it will be a 1/2 refund, and if you NO SHOW you will not be refunded as it is virtually impossible to fill your reservation window and the full cost of the trip will be forfeited.

We look forward to your time with us, and please share your confirmation email with everyone in your party so all are equally prepared! Thank you!

The staff is very knowledgeable, helpful, and more than willing to answer questions, give advice, or make suggestions to make your Montana experience the best that it can be. We will definitely recommend them to our friends.

Great Fly Fishing Guides

A friend suggested the Tackle Shop for a guide and we were really pleased. Booking it was a breeze, and we bought our fishing license at the shop which made the whole thing very easy. The shop has a nice selection and is a lot nicer than some of the tackle shops I’ve seen. John was our guide and he was excellent. I’m a bit of a novice but my hubby is pretty good. John was able to easily adapt to help both us immensely. I highly recommend it.

A Guide to Planning Montana Fly Fishing Trips

F ishing is one of the best outdoor activities to participate in, providing equal parts excitement and relaxation while enjoying stunning landscapes and natural scenery. Over 52 million people in the United States went fishing in 2021, and the numbers continue increasing. One of the most challenging types of fishing is fly fishing.

It requires touch, strategy, and patience to catch the most impressive trout in the rivers you stand in. Investing in the proper fly fishing gear will help you improve your results, but there’s much that goes into successful fishing experiences. Planning Montana fly fishing trips is one of the best ways to enjoy fishing pristine rivers.

Luckily, you’ve found the right spot to learn more about planning a fishing trip for you and your friends. Continue reading to create memorable and positive fishing experiences today!

Ask Questions

The first step toward planning a Montana fly fishing trip is to ask questions. People who have planned fishing trips in Montana are a wealth of information and knowledge. Asking the proper questions is the best way to ensure all bases are covered for your trip.

Consider visiting your local fly fishing shop to talk with the other anglers. They’ll provide insights to help you choose the best location and season to plan your trip. Many anglers are kind and respectful to people interested in learning more about fly fishing.

Do Your Research

Conducting online research is another fantastic way to gain more information before putting a concrete travel plan in place for your fly fishing needs. Do your due diligence if you want your trip to go off without a hitch. Get a fishing license for the state you plan to travel to for your fishing experiences and learn about the local rules and regulations.

The regulations will be posted online, though it’s helpful to reread them before arriving at your fishing spot to check for changed rules.

It’s also the ideal time to research the best fly fishing gear to ensure you have what you need before hitting the road. Knowing the weather at your destination is beneficial to purchase waterproof gear and equipment.

A pro tip to use is to visit local angling shops after arriving. The local anglers will briefly explain local guidelines and fishing etiquette on the river. Locals will love and appreciate your efforts to be respectful of other anglers fishing in the region.

Enjoy the Fishing Experiences

Typically, things won’t always go as you plan them when planning Montana fly fishing trips. You can let these bumps in the road bring you down or power through them with a smile to ensure positive memories from your time on the river.

Learning new types of fishing on the fly is frustrating. Fly fishing is challenging, but learning it is a rewarding experience. You will never forget the feeling of catching your first trout with a fly rod in the heart of Montana.

Fly fishing often occurs in stunning locations. When you get frustrated, take a minute to take a deep breath and enjoy the stunning landscapes around you. It’s an excellent way to calm down and enter a positive mindset. Take Montana Guided Fly Fishing Trips for your first adventure for more experience.

Leave Flexibility

You want to plan many aspects of your fly fishing trip, but overplanning creates a rigid trip that feels more like a chore than an exciting adventure. It’s vital to make time for side quests so you can pursue other outdoor activities during your time in the mountains.

You may learn new strategies and techniques you want to try while fishing. Discovering a new part of the river to fish is another possibility. When planning a fishing trip, you close off opportunities to explore and make the most of your time when you dive too deep into each detail.

Consider camping instead of staying at a hotel or lodge. You’ll enjoy a more positive experience outdoors, and there’s no commitment to be anywhere at a specific time. It’s an opportunity to live life on your terms.

Learn About Conservation Issues

Another beneficial thing to do when going fly fishing is to learn about the conservation issues the area you’re fishing faces. Your knowledge will prevent more damage to the environment. Taking steps to become involved is finding a way to become part of the solution rather than adding to the problem.

Wash down your waders upon your arrival at your destination. You may have invasive species living on your waders that could spread to the new environment. Ask around with anglers at the destination about conservation projects you can assist with.

Find Accommodation

Your trip will be an enjoyable and memorable experience if you find suitable accommodations for you and your friends when planning Montana fly fishing trips. Camping provides more flexibility and freedom, while lodges and hotels offer comfort and cleanliness.

Find what works for you and your guests before applying for camping permits or booking a stay at a lodge. Camping provides early morning and evening fishing opportunities. It’s also best to try new strategies to catch impressive trout.

Use Digital Maps

Digital maps are an effective way to find the best fishing spots when going fly fishing. Google Maps is a fantastic free option if you’re fishing while on a tight budget. You can also purchase more fly fishing gear by purchasing a GPS to find your way to and from these angling locations.

The onWater app is an excellent addition to your smartphone before hitting the trail. It shows camping, parking, and the distance between your setup and the river.

Start Planning Montana Fly Fishing Trips Today

Planning Montana fly fishing trips is an excellent way to escape from the monotony of daily life. You can pick up the best fly fishing gear and meet up with friends for a unique fishing experience in stunning landscapes and settings.

Ask questions and research to find the best locations and gear. Leave flexibility in your plans to pursue side quests. Use your time to learn about conservation issues in the area to make a difference.
