Gray Line Polynesian Adventure Tours, Pearl Harbor/City Tour

The tour was nice. However the organization was a little messy. We originally booked a hotel, where we were told by GLPAT agent, the tour bus would pick up from. After booking hotel, we found that to be incorrect. We were on the top Deck of bus and could not hear the guide well. Visiting the Punchbowl was a quick drive through, as were all the monuments. Once at Pearl Harbor you are humbled at the cost of our Country men/women, but the organization of the group was once again a mess.

Aloha FintzFamily, Thank you for sharing your experience on the Pearl Harbor and Honolulu Highlights Double Decker tour. We are glad that you enjoyed the tour of Pearl Harbor. We do regret that your expectations of the tour were not met and apologize for the inconvenience you experienced during pickup. We’ve shared your feedback with our Management Team for appropriate follow-up and would like to thank you for touring with us.

This was a great experience; a whole day of touring the Big Island, looking at volcanoes, craters, lava and other sights on the island. Our tour guide, Jane, was extremely knowledgeable and very helpful, looking after us very well for the whole day.

Aloha Alec, It sounds like your experience on the Big Island Grand Circle Island and Volcano tour was delightful. It’s great that you enjoyed your knowledgeable Driver Guide. Thank you for taking the time to post a review and we hope to welcome you on another tour in the future.

Peachy was very knowledgeable of the area and it made it more interesting and fun! It was ournfirst time on the island and i'm glad we took this tour!

Aloha Mary, Mahalo for sharing your experience on the Road to Hana, we are delighted that your first visit to Maui was made even better by a great tour. When you return to Hawaii, please consider touring with Gray Line Hawaii – Polynesian Adventure Tours again!

Best Hawaiian tour ever!!! The tour guide Ben was knowledgable, hilarious and friendly, which made the trip around Oahu totally worth it. We would do this again in a heartbeat. My wife and I had the time of our lives.

Aloha Erothwell, It’s so wonderful to learn that you and your wife enjoyed your tour experience. Mahalo for posting a review and we hope you’ll return to Hawaii and visit us again.

We wanted to go for the full Pearl Harbour Historical Experience whilst Honeymooning in Hawaii. And I believe that Polynesian Tours ran a fantastic experience that encompassed all 4 major Military attractions with a knowledgeable tour guide that even ran Obama's tour experiences! The day starts very early around 7am with Hotel pickups. Ernie, our tour guide filled us in with local knowledge as he drove us to the Pearl Harbour Experience centre. His humour was quite sarcastic and dry which resonated quite well with me. However, it's not for everybody. Be sure to pay attention to him, his instructions are as good as military orders, in order to keep us on schedule. All tickets and passes had already been organised by Ernie, it was simply a matter of showing them our passes and dropping off our bags.We started with the pearl Harbour Museum, which documented and displayed models, accounts and information about the build up to war and the physical attack on all the US bases around the Island. It also discussed the largest disaster of the day, which was the bombing of the USS Arizona. This provided an excellent segue into our next tour which was to the actual Memorial itself which you visit by boat. The experience is quite moving considering that the site is their final resting place. Respect must be shown here. There were also friendly guides on board to share more knowledge about the attack. After the visit we went back for souvenir shopping, which Ernie made plenty of allowance for. Hint: if you want more free merchandise, get coupons from travel magazines that you can pick up from hotels or the airport. Once finished, our next visit was the Pacific aviation museum - which was on an active US Military Installation - Ernie pointed out what you can and can't take photos of. Ernie also told us some interesting facts about the base, which if you remember the movie Pearl Harbour, can understand quite easily. This is also where you can receive your inclusive or paid for meal option. The cafe had plenty of meal options which we opted for instead of the inclusive option. We were then given enough time to see the museum, which had exhibits inside and outside the hanger. We saw F15s, F14s, Cobras , Sea Stallions, B24s and many more, definitely a must for aircraft enthusiasts. The museum itself also housed displays and stories about the Doolittle raid, a downed Japanese fighter and Amelia Earhart. For the kids, there were flight simulators to play on. Again there was another souvenir shop, if you love to collect patches, I recommend waiting to get them at this stop. Our next stop was the USS Missouri. This was truly an awe inspiring monument to the relics of times past. It was also where the Japanese formally surrendered. I must admit, there was not enough time to see the entire ship. You need around 2 hours here, especially given you get a 40 minute verbal tour about the main sights of the ship. The souvenir store was also great for anyone collecting memorabilia about the ship. Our final stop was the USS Bowfin, a Submarine used in WW2 where we had our chance at the audio tour. This was also available at other sites, however, we did not opt for them. They were very easy to use and gave a rich verbal history about the vessel. The vessel itself, looked practically brand new. The museum accompanying it was also just as grand. With a detailed history of the craft and life as a submariner. There was also a full size replica of an SLBM (Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile), which was fascinating to see a weapon of this magnitude up close. As for souvenirs, the Bowfin store, by far had the best assortment of all the hats, to 'cap' the tour off. Once we had finished Ernie, picked us up and took us back to our hotel around 4:30pm. If you love Military History and enjoy day tours then I highly recommend this experience. I hope others can enjoy the experience my wife and I had. Big thanks to Ernie!

Aloha Richard, We’d like to express our thanks for your comprehensive and complimentary review of your experience on the World War II Heroes Tour. We love your descriptions of each of the sites on Pearl Harbor and are grateful for your kind statements about your knowledgeable Driver Guide. Future guests will certainly enjoy reading your recap of the tour and will benefit from your helpful tips. We hope that on a return trip to Hawaii, you’ll come sightseeing with us again!

We took this tour because we had tried to do the independent thing in past years. There are so many people that it is difficult to even get a parking spot sometimes which is what happened to us last trip. Our guide/driver was very friendly and interactive and took us to the sites listed and gave history behind each stop and pointed out the things of importance along the route where we were not stopping. Gray Line does a good job of hiring some of the best folks for doing these tours! We were not able to go out to the Arizona Memorial because the boats were not running do to wind speed. Seemed like a normal Hawaii day to us but concern for safety has those in charge to shut down the ferry in sea state roughness well below what we might consider going in. This is no fault of Gray Line. Our tour guide did include a few extra sites (after checking in with those on the tour to ensure that we all had time available) at the end to help us feel more like we got our monies worth.

Aloha ABQ_StevenR, Thank you for your complete and complimentary review of your Pearl Harbor Tour experience. Mahalo for your understanding that occasionally the National Park suspends the tour to the Arizona in inclement weather for the safety of the public. We are glad that you enjoyed your Driver Guide who was also able to enhance other important parts of the tour. Again, thank you for choosing Gray Line Hawaii – Polynesian Adventure Tours and we hope you’ll return for another tour!

Visit Oahu’s Most Scenic & Cultural Sights

O ur acclaimed Grand Circle Island Tour of Oahu is the most enjoyable and informative way to see the beauties of the entire island in a single day.

This exciting 120-mile excursion includes the key sites of Hawaii’s most visited island.

Your professional driver-guide will meet you in Waikiki in a deluxe tour vehicle and share the many natural and cultural landmarks of Oahu. From the South Shore with far-reaching views of the Pacific Ocean to the windward coastline surrounded by the towering Ko’olau Mountain Range, then onward to the famous North Shore where waves pound pristine white sandy beaches, and back to Honolulu – you’ll take it all in during this one-of-a-kind tour.

Tour Highlights:

  • Amelia Earhart Lookout , located on the south side of Diamond Head, commemorates the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to the US mainland in 1934, two years after flying across the Atlantic.
  • Exclusive Kahala Avenue is known as “Hawaii’s Beverly Hills”, and you’ll view the stunning multi-million-dollar properties in this affluent community while we travel toward the South Shore sea cliffs area.
  • Hanauma Bay Lookout was formed within a volcanic cone and is a preserved ecosystem alive with native marine life. A popular snorkeling spot, Hanauma Bay’s curved bowl is visible from the highway above. Your driver will make every attempt to stop briefly to view the Bay, but dependent on the current traffic and parking situation, may need to drive by for a quick glimpse from above. Hanauma Bay is closed to the public every Tuesday.
  • Halona Blowhole acts like an ocean-driver geyser as the ocean breezes push waves into the cave below and a hole in the rock formation shoots sea spray jets high into the air. We’ll strive to include the blowhole during your tour; accessibility is dependent upon parking congestion situation at this popular stop.
  • Nu’uanu Pali Lookout is the location of the 1795 battle in which King Kamehameha I victoriously united Oahu under his rule. The epic battle claimed the lives of hundreds of warriors forced over the Pali’s sheer cliffs. At 1,200 feet above the green and blue views of Windward Oahu, the Pali Lookout is one of Oahu’s most breathtaking scenic points.
  • Byodo-In Temple is a stunning replica of a temple in Uji, Japan, Byodo-In. It is nestled in the Valley of the Temples on the slopes of the Ko’olau Mountain Range, Byodo-In commemorates the first Japanese immigrants in Hawaii and was constructed entirely without nails. Its beautiful peacocks and hundreds of Japanese Koi Carp contribute to one of the most peaceful and picturesque locations on the island.
  • Kualoa Ranch , a private nature reserve and working cattle ranch, is a frequent filming location on the windward coast where Jumanji, Jurassic Park, Hawaii Five-O, Godzilla, and others were shot. Book the “Gold” version of this tour during check-out to include a delicious buffet lunch served at the ranch cafe. While at Kualoa, you’ll enjoy the “Legends & Legacy” narrated tram ride that will take you to view remarkable ancient Hawaiian sites.
  • Chinaman’s Hat , officially Mokoli’i, or “little lizard” in Hawaiian, an islet in Kaneohe Bay aptly named for the cone-shaped hat worn by Chinese immigrants. Chinaman’s Hat is will be viewed near Kualoa as your deluxe tour vehicle winds its way along the scenic coastline.
  • North Shore Surfing Breaks , including world-famous Sunset, Waimea Bay, and others, are viewed from your tour vehicle as it crosses the island’s big wave territory. The region is known for its fabulously large wintertime waves and international surfing competitions.
  • Historic Haleiwa Town , with its preserved old plantation character and surf town image, makes its shops and restaurants popular among visitors and Oahu residents. It’s the gateway to the North Shore for those arriving from Honolulu and is the area’s largest commercial center.
  • Dole Plantation is “Hawaii’s Complete Pineapple Experience”. Learn, see, and taste the fruit that is part of the island’s heritage and enjoyed throughout the world. Walk through Dole’s country store where delicious ice-cold Dole Whip treats are available. The quintessential final stop before heading back to Waikiki.
  • Fascinating live narration by a professional driver-guide
  • Amelia Earhart Lookout on the south side of Diamond Head
  • Exclusive Kahala Avenue drive-through “Hawaii’s Beverly Hills”
  • Hanauma Bay (pending available parking)
  • Halona Blowhole (pending available parking)
  • Nu’uanu Pali Lookout scenic vista towering 1,200 feet over Windward Oahu
  • Byodo-In Temple in Valley of the Temples, gorgeous grounds and remarkable architecture
  • Chinaman’s Hat island offshore near Kualoa
  • Kualoa Ranch tram ride.
  • North Shore world-famous surfing beaches of Sunset, Waimea Bay, and others
  • Drive through rustic, historic Haleiwa Town
  • Coffee and pineapple farms of Central Oahu

TOUR PHOTOS

Waimea Bay Oahu

I broke my ankle while on vacation and rented a mobility scooter the rest of the trip. This company is ADA compliant on their Grand Circle Island Tour of Oahu. The driver was great! He told us about the history of where we were going and kept us entertained the entire trip. He also never acted annoyed that he had to use the bus lift to lift me down at each stop which was nice. I do not believe the normal tour is on a huge bus unless you need the ADA complaint. I've been to Oahu 4 times in the past and never really did a Circle Island Tour. This was one of my favorite days I had (despite it raining the entire trip). I enjoyed all the stops!

Recently did two different tours with this company during my vacation with my husband in Oahu. The Grand Circle Island Tour with Cousin Koko was the best. Not only was he professional and fun-spirited, he was patient and very informative. Learned so much about the different places we visited on the tour. Treated everyone on the motorcoach like ohana! The Pearl Harbor and USS Arizona Memorial Tour with Cousin Wes was great as well. Our tour through downtown Honolulu was great; definitely appreciated the history lesson! It’s imperative that while on vacation, one should learn about the history and culture about the place you’re visiting! Thank you Roberts Hawaii for making our tours memorable!

The guide we had was excellent. He had a keen knowledge and deep understanding of the history and culture of Oahu and all the places we visited. And he brought us to a great local spot for lunch.

Shaka Guide's Oahu Grand Circle Island Tour Itinerary

February 26, 2024

Shaka Guide

On Shaka Guide’s Grand Circle Island Tour , you’ll make your way to Oahu’s North Shore stopping at cultural sites, famous beaches, a waterfall and some of the island’s most famous foodie spots along the way.

This tour has a total of 21 stops with 121 audio points sharing history and music throughout your journey.

This tour has two main starting points, depending on where you’re staying. These are:

  • Waikiki and
  • Ko Olina on Oahu’s west side

Just select the starting point that works best for you, and the tour will travel in a counter-clockwise loop around the island, returning where you began.

Please note, that this tour cannot be done in the opposite direction. If you are looking to take a tour that gets you to the North Shore earlier in the day, try our clockwise tour around the island,  Shaka Guide Legendary North Shore Loop .

grand circle tour

*This sample itinerary starts and ends in Waikiki.*

This tour takes approximately 6-8 hours to complete. We recommend you start the tour early, by 9:00 a.m., if you’re looking to make it to every stop.

Leonard's Bakery

Approximate time: 20 minutes

It’s time to fuel up for the day ahead and what better way than a deep-fried, Portuguese donut, known as a malasada?

We’ll guide you to Leonard’s Bakery, one of O'ahu’s most famous spots for these delicious treats.

Leonard’s features eight different types of malasadas from its original that’s coated in sugar to custard-stuffed varieties filled with flavors like

  • haupia (coconut)
  • macadamia nut

There’s usually a line, but don’t let that deter you -- it moves pretty fast.

Byodo-In Temple

Approximate time: 30 minutes

After you’ve grabbed a snack at Leonard’s you’ll begin traversing your way to the North Shore.

On the way, you can stop at Byodo-In Temple, a site that was built in 1968 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii.

Nestled under the Ko'olau Mountains, the temple is a replica of a 950-year-old Japanese temple in Uji, Japan, that is listed as a United Nations World Heritage Site.

Please note:  Byodo-In is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. General admission is $5 per person, and they accept credit or debit card only.

Tropical Nut Farm

Approximate time: 10 minutes

Make a quick pit stop at The Tropical Nut Farm to try a wide variety of macadamia nuts from Maui Onion and Garlic to Kona Coffee Glazed.

The farm offers free coffee and nut samples so you can try them before you buy.

Mokoli'i (known locally as Chinaman’s Hat)

Pull into Kualoa Regional Park for a stunning view of Mokoli'i Island. Known for years by its nickname, Chinamans' Hat, the cone-shaped island is a well-recognized landmark on the Windward side.

This is just a quick stop for the view, but if you’re looking for more adventure, you can come back another day with a kayak to explore the island.

Kualoa Ranch

Approximate time: 15 minutes - 2 hours (depending on activities)

range of mountains with palin grass below

Kualoa Ranch is a 4,000-acre private nature reserve with a working farm and adventure haven.

The ranch offers all sorts of adventures, tours and activities including the Hollywood Sites Movie Tour, Jurassic Adventure Tour, and UTV Raptor Tour, plus ziplining, kayaking, and horseback riding.

Feel free to make a quick stop at the gift shop, museum and restrooms today.

If you want to do one of their amazing adventures, we recommend you make reservations and come back another day.

Go for a quiet beach walk at Kahana Bay, a gorgeous spot without any crowds.

There’s also a public restroom if you need a bathroom break.

La'ie Beach Park (also known as Pounders Beach)

Locals call this beach “Pounders Beach” because of the relentless pounding shore break, making it an ideal spot for body surfing and boogie boarding.

Get out and have a look, but we don’t recommend swimming here.

If you’re getting a bit hungry, feel free to skip this spot to make your way to the Polynesian Cultural Center for a snack.

download shaka guide

Polynesian Cultural Center

The Polynesian Cultural Center is one of O'ahu’s most visited attractions.

It features island villages that represent six Polynesian islands:

  • Hawai'i
  • Aotearoa (New Zealand)

The center also has a luau, night show and marketplace. Please note that a visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center is a full-day excursion. We recommend you stop by to check out the marketplace and come back another day if you’d like to do the activities.

Pro Tip! You’ll be tempted to grab lunch at the food trucks at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Grab a snack but save room for lunch in Kahuku, a spot with dozens of lunch options. Don’t worry, we’ll guide you there.

La'ie Point

shore line

Stop for a quick view of a breathtaking sea arch at La'ie Point. As waves crash below you’ll see just how this magnificent geologic wonder was formed!

See if you can spot the lizard from the story that the tour describes.

La'ie Temple

Approximate time: 5 minutes

On our way to the next stop, we’ll quickly drive by La'ie Temple.

No need to get out of the car, just listen as we tell you the story of this site that was designed after King Solomon’s temple described in the Bible.

With its gleaming white finish, the temple is dubbed the “Taj Mahal of the Pacific.”

Here you’ll find a visitor center with clean restrooms if you want to make a pit stop.

Kahuku Shrimp Trucks (and Food Trucks)

Known for its shrimp trucks, Kahuku is home to dozens of eateries serving up warm plates of garlic shrimp.

But, shrimp isn’t all you’ll find. Look out for pizza, plate lunches, burgers, yogurt and huli huli chicken -- another local favorite.

Please note:  Most of the food trucks in Kahuku are cash only.

Kahuku Fruit Stands

As you’re driving to the North Shore, you’ll pass a few fruit stands along the way.

One of our favorites, Kahuku Fruit Stands, is located just past Turtle Bay Resort.

Stop for some locally grown fruit that’s cut, chilled and ready to eat.

Ted’s Bakery

Approximate time: 15 minutes

At this point, you might be thinking to yourself, is this a food tour? And, in a way it is!

This tour has some of the best food stops on the island. We hope you saved room for dessert because you won’t want to miss Ted’s Bakery's famous cream pies.

The specialty is their chocolate haupia pie, but they also have strawberry guava, blueberry, and pineapple macadamia nut, just to name a few!

Sunset Beach

sunset on the beach

Even though this beach is a famous surf spot as its name suggests, it’s also a great place to watch the sunset.

At this point, it’s probably too early to stay for sunset without skipping all the awesome things that are left to do on the tour, but we recommend you come back another evening.

If you’re not staying for sunset, you might want to skip this spot and head to the next beach.

Pro Tip! This beach, as well as all the beaches along the North Shore, has large waves during the winter months of October to April. We recommend watching the surfers from the shore. Swimming is dangerous during this time.

Banzai Pipeline

Officially named Ehukai Beach, Banzai Pipeline is a surfer’s mecca. “Pipeline,” as surfers call it, is known for its quintessential barreling waves that curl like a pipe.

Each winter, surfers from all over the world test their might at “pipe” during the annual Billabong Pipeline Masters competition.

Hundreds of people flock to the beach to catch a glimpse of these athletes in action.

Even during the summer months, when waves have calmed and the surfers have relocated, parking is limited.

If you can’t find a spot, look for street parking. We recommend just admiring the surfers at this beach as it’s not safe for swimming, even in summer.

Shark's Cove

Approximate time: 1 hour

Shark’s Cove is a Marine Life Conservation District, known for some of the best snorkeling and diving because of its diversity of sea life just below the water.

If you’ve got kiddos with you, to the left of Shark’s Cove is an area of tidepools, perfect for children to wade through the water and paddle around.

A word of caution for all: The lava rocks here are very sharp.

We recommend wearing water shoes and being extremely careful as you enter and exit the water.

If you need snorkel gear, you can rent equipment across the street.

Waimea Valley

Approximate time: 2 hours

This valley features a botanical garden and a one-and-a-half-mile hike to a 45-foot waterfall.

Once you reach the falls, you’ll have the option to swim in the pool below.

This is a great attraction that’s fit for the whole family.

Note:  There is an entrance fee to visit Waimea Valley.

Approximate time: 45 minutes

beach in hawaii with white sand and crystal blue water

Waimea Bay is a gorgeous moon-shaped, white-sand beach. During winter, the shore break is fierce and not suitable for casual swimming.

However, when the water is calm, you can jump in the ocean for a dip, snorkel, and, if you’re feeling adventurous, try a 30-foot cliff jump off Da Big Rock.

Note:  Parking in this area can be difficult at times, especially if the surf is up. If the main parking lot is full, look for street parking. Sometimes there is paid parking across the street at Waimea Valley.

Laniakea Beach

Also known as Turtle Beach, this little beach is a natural feeding ground for honu or sea turtles.

This beach tends to get crowded, and parking is extremely limited. If you can’t find a spot, just keep driving down the road to the next stop.

If you do visit the beach, be careful while crossing the road from the small parking area, and please be mindful to keep your distance from these protected animals.

Getting too close to sea turtles will result in a large fine.

Hale'iwa Town

Hale'iwa is a seaside town with a beach, river, mom-and-pop shops and loads of local eateries.

While you’re here, step into some of the one-of-a-kind art galleries, shop for unique souvenirs and grab a bite to eat.

You can also kayak, surf, stand-up paddle board and even go diving with sharks.

Matsumoto Shave Ice

Dating back to the early 1950’s, this dessert spot serves up Hawaiian shave ice in dozens of flavors! It’s a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike.

There will most likely be a long line, but don’t let that stop you -- it moves fast.

Or--cross the road and check out Aoki's Shave Ice, another local favorite.

Dole Plantation

Approximate time: 30-45 minutes

big house facade

The Dole Plantation is a family-friendly spot with several activities, a sprawling gift shop, sweet treats like pineapple soft serve and the Instagram-famous Dole Whip.

While you’re there, you can go on the Pineapple Express -- a train ride through the plantation; weave your way out of a pineapple maze and go on a self-guided garden walking tour.

If you only have time for one activity, we recommend the train ride.

This spot is worth it to shop for a variety of pineapple-flavored treats -- from candies to pancake mix.

The plantation is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Note:  The activities at Dole Plantation require an entrance fee, but you can visit the gift shop and cafe (for a Dole Whip) without paying an entrance fee.

Drive Back to Waikiki

Now that you’ve had your final sweet treat for the day, it’s time to make your way back to Waikiki.

The drive will take about 45 minutes (if there’s no traffic), and we’ll tell you the history of the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy and the attack on Pearl Harbor along the way.

Final Thoughts

When you’re in Hawai'i, we ask that you act respectfully toward the locals, land and wildlife.

Please pick up your trash; never touch any marine life, plants, or other animals; and avoid spots that are unsafe. Hawai'i’s natural resources are precious. It’s up to all of us to help preserve these resources.

We hope that we’ve given you all the information you need to make the most of your day. Your vacation is extremely important to us so if you have any questions feel free to reach out at [email protected] .

Shaka Guide recognizes the use of diacritics in the Hawaiian language including the okina or glottal stop and the kahako or macron. In some instances, these have been omitted on our site to ensure the best online experience for our users since not all online platforms recognize these marks. We understand the importance of these diacritics to preserve the language and culture of Hawaii.
