Fans can track ball donations throughout the season

DP World, the global logistics provider and title partner of the DP World Tour, has announced a new DP World Tour golf ball initiative, ‘Balls for Birdies’. The initiative builds on DP World’s unique Second Life Container campaign which has collected and donated over 280,000 used, lost and unwanted golf balls over the past few years, helping to grow the game of golf globally.

During the 2024, DP World has pledged to donate golf balls, linked to the number of Birdies / Eagles / Albatrosses shot on the DP World Tour, which at the end of the season will form part of a beneficiary donation, to promote grassroots golf and make golf more accessible all around the world.

·       For each birdie,  1 ball  will be donated

·       For each eagle,  2 balls  will be donated

·       For each albatross,  100 balls  will be donated

Balls for Birdies commenced during the Hero Indian Open and continue throughout the Tour season, concluding at the DP World Tour Championship, before starting again for the 2025 season.

Balls for Birdies will be seen by golf fans around the world on the DP World Tour broadcast, as a number of graphics have been created, linked to the new campaign. These will be shown at key DP World Tour events including the Genesis Scottish Open, Abu Dhabi Championship and the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

Tommy Fleetwood ,  world number 13 and 7-time winner on the DP World Tour , who provided the VO in the launch video, said, “DP World has played a major part in helping to grow grassroots golf. This new initiative is really exciting, I hope I can play my part, as will all DP World Tour members, by playing well and shooting low scores, to help donate as many balls as possible and inspire the next generation.”

Danny van Otterdijk, Chief Communications Officer at DP World , adds, “We’re delighted with the positive effects that our Second Life Container initiative has had over the past two years, and we think Balls for Birdies is a brilliant extension of this. It’s always great to work collaboratively with the DP World Tour, on initiatives that will help to inspire people and grow the game, using our smart logistics network around the globe to facilitate that.”

“We are delighted to work with DP World on the new Balls for Birdies initiative, this will have a major impact on many aspiring golfers around the world. We’re hopeful that players will shoot as many low scores as possible, to keep the golf ball tally increasing throughout the season.” said  Keith Pelley, Chief Executive Officer of the DP World Tour.

Watch these comical outtakes of 27 pro golfers trying to juggle one golf ball

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/dp-world-juggling.jpg

DP World Tour and G4D Tour players juggle during the Keepy Uppy Challenge. (Courtesy of DP World Tour X account)

As with so many things in golf, Tiger Woods is the original king of the golf ball juggling video. At his absolute peak in 2000, Woods filmed three commercials for Nike that were wildly popular because few had seen someone deftly bounce a ball on a wedge so artistically, or for so long. Each commercial was 30 seconds, and it’s said that Woods did the first one in only four takes.

Numerous fun juggling videos followed, but we hadn’t seen anything like what the players on the DP World Tour and G4D Tour (golfers with disabilities) came up with this week at the DP World’s season-ending championship in Dubai.

MORE: Matt Wallace birdies every hole on the back nine to take DP World lead

Twenty-seven players lined up side by side on the driving range at Jumeirah Golf Estates with wedges in hand for what was dubbed, cheekily enough, the Keepy Uppy Challenge. Rising Polish star Adrian Meronk got the juggling started and the goal was to move through 25 other players before reaching Scotsman Robert MacIntyre, who would whack the ball with a baseball (or cricket?) swing to cap the sequence.

Fans ate it up on X, formerly Twitter, and there was even one dig at American players: “Simply wouldn’t happen on PGAT, I imagine Patrick Cantlay would want 100K a hop.”

There was also a very obvious question: How many takes were there?

It didn’t take long for the DP World Tour to respond with an “outtakes” version. The quick answer on takes: seven, and the sequence lasts just about a minute. Which is pretty impressive when you think about it. But there were some amusing misses, including the second guy in the line, Romain Langasque, flubbing the very first try and the 12th man, Dan Hillier, kind of just staring at the ball as it drops.

The best miss belongs to MacIntyre, the affable first-time Ryder Cupper this year who, on his first attempt, takes his big left-handed swing and completely whiffs. The groans are audible as MacIntyre lies in a heap on the ground. (Bobby shouldn’t feel bad; the last of the three Tiger commercials shows all of his misses, and there were plenty.)

Anyway, it makes the celebration all the more raucous when MacIntyre connects on the second try. The players go nuts and swarm their hero. Keepy Uppy has its new kings.

That being said, there is still a rather big competition to be won this week. McIlroy and his closest opponent this year Jon Rahm are aiming to claim their third and fourth Championship titles respectively.

Indian Open 2024 golf: Japan’s Keita Nakajima wins title, India’s Veer Ahlawat finishes tied-second

Keita Nakajima carded 17 under par to win the title. USA’s Johannes Veerman and Sweden’s Sebastian Soderberg also finished T2. Anirban Lahiri missed the cut.

Keita Nakajima of Japan won the Hero Indian Open 2024.

Japan’s Keita Nakajima won his maiden DP World Tour title at the Indian Open 2024 golf tournament, which concluded at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurugram on Sunday.

Nakajima secured a comprehensive victory as a 73 in the final round proved enough to hand him a four-shot win with a total of 17 under-par. He arrived into the final round on the back of a four-shot advantage.

The Japanese golfer had opened up a nine-shot lead at one point but a strong finish from home favourite Veer Ahlawat, American Johannes Veerman and Sweden’s Sebastian Soderberg, who all finished tied-second, cut down his victory margin.

"It feels amazing," Nakajima said. "I feel like this is the first win of a new professional career. This is my first year playing on the DP World Tour and I'm very proud to have won on the DP World Tour and very honoured to be playing here. I want to try and finish in the top ten on this tour and then go to the PGA Tour in 2025.”

This was only Nakajima’s 11th start and victory here has helped him move to 13th in the Race to Dubai Rankings and on top of the Asian Swing Standings.

Nakajima has also become only the fifth Japanese winner in the history of the DP World Tour. Players from Japan have notched seven DP World Tour victories overall.

India’s Veer Ahlawat, meanwhile, finished strong and went three under in his last three holes to finish tied-second. He ended up as the highest-ranked Indian golfer in the home tournament after scoring 13 under par.

India’s Manu Gandas finished tied-11th with nine under par while Karandeep Kochhar finished with eight under par to end up at T13 on the leaderboard. Shubhankar Sharma finished tied 31st.

Indian Open 2015 champion Anirban Lahiri, however, missed the cut. Lahiri is a two-time winner on the European Tour golf circuit and a seven-time Asian Tour winner.

Masters analysis: 10 notes to know on Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau after Day 1

Masters analysis: 10 notes to know on Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau after Day 1

Rain may have delayed the beginning of the 88th Masters by a couple of hours, but it certainly didn’t extinguish the fireworks.

A major champion with a mixed history at Augusta National had the best Masters round of his career Thursday. Meanwhile, golf’s unrelenting top performer continued his run of dominant play.

Here are the top numbers and notes to know from Day 1 of the Masters.

1. Brazen and boundary-pushing, Bryson DeChambeau once made a comment that wrinkled green jackets all over Georgia, saying that Augusta National “played like a par 67” for him thanks to his massive distance. That ensuing Sunday, DeChambeau found himself humbled, 13 shots behind leader Dustin Johnson, and according to his self-imposed standard of par, 12 over.

He was grouped in that final round with then-63-year-old Bernhard Langer, then the oldest man to make a Masters cut. DeChambeau outdrove Langer that week by an average of 64 yards, but the two-time Masters champ got the final upper hand, beating him that Sunday (71 to 73) and on the leaderboard (by one shot).

That DeChambeau looked little like the one who shot 65 at Augusta National on Thursday, the lowest round he has carded here in 25 tries. DeChambeau had been flummoxed by the greens here previously, losing nearly half a stroke putting per round. Thursday, he gained 3.71 strokes with his putter, most of any player. His 15 greens in regulation today were also four more than his career average heading into the week.

go-deeper

The Masters leader? It's the 'little bit smarter' version of Bryson DeChambeau

2. Barring a Friday morning charge by someone, DeChambeau will hold the outright lead following a Masters round for the first time. He shared the first-round lead in 2019 with rival Brooks Koepka after an opening 66, but a second-round 75 rendered him an afterthought by the time Tiger Woods surged to a historic victory that Sunday.

Can he keep his momentum churning into Round 2? This is the fourth time DeChambeau has opened a major with a round in the 60s since winning the U.S. Open at Winged Foot in 2020. In those subsequent second rounds, he shot a combined score of 5 over par.

3. Just one shot back is smiling golf ball-killing machine Scottie Scheffler, who dissected Augusta National with a bogey-free 66 on Thursday. Since the ranking began in 1986, Scheffler is the third reigning world No. 1 to start a Masters with a round of 66 or lower. The previous two both had historic finishes to their weeks: In 2020, Dustin Johnson went on to set the Masters Tournament scoring record (-20). In 1996, Greg Norman blew the largest 54-hole lead in men’s major history (six shots).

Scheffler’s short-game touch is arguably his most underrated trait. He entered the week ranked fifth on the PGA Tour this season in strokes gained around the green per round, at well over half a stroke per 18 holes. He was even better than that Thursday, gaining a field-best 2.8 shots in that metric. Entering the week, Scheffler scrambled at a rate of 62.7 percent in his young Masters career. Thursday, he was 5-of-5.

4. There’s a more troubling trend, though, for everyone in the field not named Scheffler. He’s statistically been the best ball striker at the Masters since making his debut in 2020 — and he’s getting better. In his first appearance at Augusta National, Scheffler lost 0.72 strokes with his approaches per round. Every year, that’s gone up, leading to a career-best 1.71 per round in 2023. Thursday, he gained 2.09 strokes with his approach shots.

Thursday was Scheffler’s first career bogey-free round at the Masters. He has beaten the field scoring average in 20 of his last 21 PGA Tour rounds and has not turned in a score over par since Aug. 26. He is now 68 under par in the major championships since the beginning of 2020, eight shots clear of anyone else in that span.

5. Entering the week, two particularly accomplished Masters rookies — both of whom played in last year’s Ryder Cup — were getting a deserved amount of attention as potential contenders. Wyndham Clark is the first player to make his Masters debut as the reigning U.S. Open champion since 1970. Ludvig Åberg has rocketed into the world’s top 10 and is the only man to compete in a Ryder Cup before playing his first major. The hype was justified.

But another member of that winning European team — a phenom in his own right, who won the DP World Tour Championship last fall — didn’t get his name on the pre-tournament debutant marquee. Nicolai Højgaard, 23, played his way onto it Thursday. When play was suspended (darkness), Højgaard was 5 under with three holes to play. Despite not yet finishing his round, Højgaard ranked in the top 10 Thursday in both strokes gained approach and around the green.

Højgaard is a three-time winner on the DP World Tour, with some stout names in his rearview mirror in those victories. Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland were among the runners-up last fall in Dubai. Fleetwood and Adrian Meronk finished T-2 to him at the 2021 Italian Open. His best finish so far in 2024 was a second-place result at Torrey Pines in January.

6. Danny Willett wasn’t supposed to be playing in this year’s Masters. Doctors told him he would be out of action for 12 to 18 months after undergoing surgery on his left shoulder last year. But Willett wasn’t supposed to win a green jacket in 2016, either. He wasn’t supposed to topple Jordan Spieth, a player gunning for back-to-back, wire-to-wire green jackets.

Willett is making a habit of exceeding expectations at this place. In his first competitive round in 207 days, Willett shot 68, one of the more remarkable opening rounds in recent Masters memory. Last year, the Englishman lost more than 3.3 strokes putting in Rounds 1 and 2 combined. Today, he gained 2.67, sixth-most in the field.

Since his improbable win here in 2016, Willett’s best major finish is a tie for sixth at the 2019 Open.

7. Max Homa is 4 under through 13 holes, easily the best start he’s ever enjoyed at the Masters. Before Thursday, Homa had never broken par on the first nine at Augusta National in any tournament round. In Round 1, he was a bogey-free 4 under at the turn, within striking distance of the top of the board.

One of the game’s more popular characters, Homa has steadily climbed the ladder of professional golf over the past decade. The 2013 NCAA Division I champ won on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2014 and 2016. After winning once in his first 109 career PGA Tour starts, he’s rattled off five victories since 2021. At the 2023 Open Championship, he picked up his first career top-10 finish in a major. He backed that up with his first appearance for the United States in a Ryder Cup a few weeks later.

His ascent has been earned on the course, as he’s improved dramatically in almost every key statistic over the last five years. His next logical step? Contending on Sunday in a major championship. Will it be this week?

8. Defending champ Jon Rahm stumbled out of the gates, as many reigning Masters winners have in recent years. Rahm makes it six of the last eight players defending their title here to shoot over par in Round 1. The Spaniard wasn’t himself with the driver Thursday: From his debut in 2017 through 2023, he led all qualified players in strokes gained off the tee per round at the Masters. In Round 1, he lost nearly a stroke and a half in that category.

Only three men have won back-to-back Masters titles: Jack Nicklaus (1965-66), Nick Faldo (1989-90) and Tiger Woods (2001-02). All three of them started their back-to-back win with a first-round score under par. Rahm is eight behind DeChambeau — nobody has trailed by more than seven after 18 holes and gone on to win the Masters.

9. Rory McIlroy opened with 71, his best first-round score at the Masters in six years. In the five Tournaments between, McIlroy had a Round 1 scoring average of 73.8 at Augusta National, playing the par 4s in a combined 15 over. McIlroy posted a red number despite playing the par 5s in even par, the first time he failed to break par on that quartet of holes in 15 tries.

Woods was 1 under through 13 holes when play was suspended, a promising start for the five-time champion. Woods made birdie at No. 1, a famously calamitous hole for him during his career. It was the first time Tiger birdied that hole to begin a Masters since 1998. If he finishes his opening round under par, it will be the 52nd round in the red in Woods’ Masters career, breaking a tie with Gary Player for sixth all time.

10. Patrick Cantlay made eagle on the 17th hole Thursday, the first time that has happened at the Masters since Davis Love III did it in 1998, and just the fourth instance in tournament history. The hole was played more than 7,200 times in Masters Tournament play between players signing for a two.

Since 2000, 90.5 percent of men’s major champions have been at or within five of the lead after Round 1. Twenty-six of the last 30 Masters winners have been at or within five shots entering the second round.

Spain's  Jon Rahm  is the defending champion after he won his second Major title on the 40th anniversary of Seve Ballesteros' second win at Augusta National 12 months ago, with an array of international talent looking to claim the coveted Green Jacket this year.

World Number 1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler arrives in sensational form, while Rory McIlroy is making a 10th attempt to complete the Grand Slam of winning all four majors and Tiger Woods makes just his second start worldwide this season, five years on from his remarkable fifth Masters triumph.

Ryder Cup star Ludvig Åberg , already a winner on both the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR having turned professional last summer, makes his Major Championship debut this week as does Japan's Ryo Hisatsune , while another rookie Matthieu Pavon looks to create more headlines after his history-making exploits on the PGA TOUR earlier this year.

Norway's Viktor Hovland and England's Matt Fitzpatrick enjoyed top-10 finishes in 2023, while Tommy Fleetwood among others is hoping to challenge for his first Major victory.

Fantasy Insight: As it stands, Scottie Scheffler is the favourite for players of our Fantasy Game this week , featuring in 88% of teams. Other popular players include defending champion Jon Rahm (67%) and four-time Major winner Rory McIlroy (64%).

Viktor Hovland, who is yet to miss a cut at Augusta National in his first four appearances, is the fourth most picked player, featuring in 44% of Fantasy teams.

FDPWT_The-Masters_Ones-to-Watch_16x9 (1)

Here, we pick out three players in action this week who are worth considering for your Fantasy team selections.

Favourite - Scottie Scheffler

Quite simply he is the best player in the world. Twice a winner already this year, including at The Players Championship last month, and with his worst finish this season a tie for 17th, it would be no surprise if he claimed his second Green Jacket, two years after his first.

The American is also one of just three players (alongside Hideki Matsuyama and Shane Lowry) to have finished in the top 25 at each of the last four Masters.

Statistically the strongest across a number of categories on the PGA TOUR, the 27-year-old will be a tough act to beat if he has a good week on the greens.

Scheffler-2128083227

Form horse - Ludvig Åberg

You begin to run out of superlatives for the Swede. Less than a year on from turning professional, the young Swede is preparing for his first Major Championship appearance.

Labelled a "generational talent" by Team Europe Captain Luke Donald ahead of his Ryder Cup debut last September, Åberg arrives at Augusta National in fine form - he has three top 10s in his last six PGA TOUR starts and has finished no worse than a tie for 25th during that stretch.

A winner on both sides of the Atlantic, and now inside the world's top 10, could he become the first player since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979 to win on his Masters debut? He has certainly proven himself capable of rising to the biggest challenges before.

Ludvig Åberg

Wild card - Justin Rose

The former World Number One is not to be discounted easily.

While his results since contesting the Ryder Cup might not inspire much confidence, it is hard to find others who are yet to win the Masters with a more enviable record at Augusta National.

In his 18 appearances to date, he has six top-10s, twice finishing runner-up. In that time, he has also made the cut on 16 occasions, so someone who historically gives himself a shot at the title heading into the final 36 holes.

Justin Rose-1781807741

Looking back – Hero Indian Open

Keita Nakajima became the second Japanese to win on the DP World Tour this season at the DLF Golf & Country Club as he picked up 232 Fantasy player points, rewarding the near 12% of the game's users who had him in their team.

Five years ago – yes, it’s been five years already – Tiger Woods captured his fifth green jacket and his 15th career major victory at Augusta National Golf Club.

Five years can be an eternity in the world of golf equipment, where it’s commonplace for manufacturers to create new designs and make technological advancements yearly.

In some ways, Woods has fully capitalized on new upgrades with his equipment. In other ways, Woods is continuing to use the same tried-and-true equipment that he used at The 2019 Masters.

Let’s break down the similarities and differences between Woods’ setup in 2019, and what he’s using this week at the Masters.

At the 2019 Masters, Woods filled the rest of his bag out with TaylorMade Milled Grind Raw wedges (56 and 60 degrees), his longtime Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS prototype putter, and a Bridgestone Tour B XS golf ball. He also wore Nike shoes and apparel, too.

Now, let’s fast forward to this week.

Woods is currently using TaylorMade’s new Qi10 metalwoods, including a Qi10 LS (Low Spin) 10.5-degree head (which is lofted down to 9.75 degrees), and a Qi10 Tour 15-degree head (which is lofted down to 13.5 degrees).

Woods switched into the Qi10 LS driver at the 2023 Hero World Challenge , and he switched into the Qi10 Tour 3-wood at the 2024 Genesis Invitational .

While Woods is taking advantage of the modern technology in his longer woods, he continues to use the M3 5-wood that released to the public in 2018, and he used to win the Masters.

After switching to the new Qi10 Tour 3-wood at The 2024 Genesis Invitational, Woods touched on why the 5-wood remains in the bag: “I feel very comfortable with the 3-wood…my 5-wood’s different; it’s old, a little beat up, but it still works.”

Woods has been known to use the 5-wood from various lies, with a number of different trajectories. So, for Woods, the club is more about comfort and versatility than distance and forgiveness, so it remains in the bag, even after all these years.

Although Woods is still using the same P-7TW blade irons from 4-iron to pitching wedge, he’s added a touch of forgiveness at the top of his iron set since 2019, by way of a TaylorMade P-770 3-iron. The P-770 irons have a hollow-body construction and ultra-thin faces to help increase speed and launch compared to his musclebacks.

Moving along to the wedges, Woods has upgraded from the original Milled Grind Raw 56- and 60-degree wedges in 2019, to the new Milled Grind 4 models. He’s undergone multiple wedge changes since 2019, but he’s always stayed within TaylorMade’s Milled Grind family line.

And, the putter? That hasn’t changed.

Well, the red paint has chipped a bit more along the way, and the wear mark on the dead center of the face has gotten more pronounced, but it’s still squarely in the bag, and still equipped with a Ping PP58 grip.

Woods also still uses a Bridgestone Tour B golf ball, but he switched from the XS model to the lower-spinning X model in 2022, and then in the beginning of 2024, he switched into the upgraded version for more distance off the tee and control around the green.

Lastly, of course, Woods is donning his new Sun Day Red brand from head-to-toe at the Masters this year rather than Nike apparel.

Should Woods grab the trophy on Sunday at Augusta National, he’ll do so with a whole new look, and a partially new equipment setup, too.

Let’s see if he can turn back the clock once again and capture a sixth green jacket and 16th major victory.

PGA: Masters Tournament - First Round, Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods’ opening round of the 88th Masters Tournament was cut short due to a rain delay early Thursday morning .

The late start did not detract from his concentration though, as he entered the clubhouse tied for 17th at 1-under par.

He opened with a birdie-three on the 1st.

However, his tee shot on the par-5 2nd found the Augusta National forest to the left. His ball was nestled up against the right side of the tree, taking away any chance for a right-handed golfer to take a swing at it.

Improvisation has always been a strength of Woods’ game. He put that on display as he went left-handed to play the ball back into the fairway.

“...[I] hit the next one almost in a hazard, played lefty, got out there, and boy, I hit a nice pitch from over the green. That was nice,” Woods said after play concluded.

After he put the ball back into the fairway lefty, his approach shot air mailed the green, leaving him an incredibly difficult chip coming back with very little room to play with.

Yet, he hit a beautiful chip and for the up-and-down par.

He would go on to bogey the par-3 4th and birdie the par-5 8th to make the turn at 1-under. That’s where he would finish after making a short par putt on 13.

Afterward, he was asked about the difficult playing conditions with wind speeds reaching upwards of 30 miles per hour.

“The wind was all over the place. It was one of the most tricky days that I’ve ever been a part of,” Woods explained.

“It was hard to get a beat not only on what direction it was going, but the intensity, and it kept switching all over the place, and then you had to — the timing was affecting putts on the greens. It was a very difficult day.”

It was quite impressive watching the 48-year-old legend work his way around Augusta in those conditions.

He will have to contend with even higher winds Friday with gusts expected up to 45 miles per hour.

He will tee off on 14 to finish out his first round at 7:50 am ET.
