Three decades and 8,000 performances later, Tony Ocean continues to chart his own musical course, attracting legions of fans in the process.

As Tony Ocean belted out the final notes of “My Way” to a roar of applause on May 29 at the Des Plaines Theatre, he surveyed his band onstage and his wife and family in the audience and, amid a shower of roses, wiped a tear from his eye. And why not? Ocean had just finished his 8,000th performance.

There has been plenty of glitz along the way: a run in Las Vegas, a performance in Aruba, and the wildly popular “Rat Pack Is Back” shows at Jilly’s and other clubs. But all that fun and glamour has been built on a foundation of hard work: endless rehearsals, countless sound checks, driving home at 2 a.m. in subzero temperatures. But Ocean wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I’m so grateful that my fans would spend their hard-earned money on one of my shows, and even if some didn’t have a lot of it, still come out to see me,” Ocean says. “And I’m so lucky to be able to work with all the musicians who have played in my bands, and people like Ron Onesti, who believed in me and backed me.”

The foundation for Ocean’s long musical career was laid when his parents, Giovanni and Graziella Carrara, left Lucca, a small village in the Tuscan region of Northern Italy. They came to the United States in the summer of 1962, settling just outside of Chicago, where they had a son, Maurizio, and daughter, Tania.

“I grew up in Cicero and attended Elmwood Park High School,” Ocean says from his north suburban home. “My father was a baker who worked for Gonnella — first at the factory on Erie Street and then at the frozen food plant in Schaumburg. He worked very hard for many years. It’s from him that I gained my work ethic.”

Ocean grew up in a household that embraced its Italian heritage.

“My mom spoke only Italian,” Ocean says. “As for music, that was very Italian, too. My mother listened to Italian operas and popular music, and my uncle listened to Sinatra and Martin.”

Ocean got his first taste of fame when his high school choir performed for Pope Paul VI in Rome. But while his mom loved Verdi and Puccini, rock ’n’ roll was Ocean’s genre of choice.

“I was very much into the British Invasion, listening to everyone from The Beatles and Herman’s Hermits to The Bay City Rollers,” Ocean says. “I was also into bands like The Raspberries, Ramones and Cheap Trick. The first band I gigged with regularly was The Dream Police, a Cheap Trick cover band.”

Still going by the name Carrara, Ocean played local clubs and bars like The Thirsty Whale in River Grove. Though he was on the verge of success for years without it materializing, Ocean kept at it. As the old saying goes, “Good luck is another word for tenacity of purpose.”

“We had a record deal that fell through, and I was working at Electek in Willowbrook,” Ocean recalls.

The tipping point came in 1992, when his band, Big Bang Rodeo, was voted runner-up on the TV show “Star Search.” The band lost by half a vote, and Ocean knew it was time for a change. He took the stage name Tony Ocean as an homage to Danny Ocean, Frank Sinatra’s character in “Ocean’s Eleven.”

“I began singing Dean Martin songs at a karaoke bar,” Ocean recalls. “People enjoyed it, and we started to do a little show at Café Clemenza. Nick Fortuna (best known as the bass player for The Buckinghams) liked it, and we put together a little jazz show featuring the old Martin and Sinatra songs at the Jazz Buffett in Chicago.

“We wanted to move to a bigger venue, and we were all set up at Piper’s Alley in Old Town. The show was sold, but we had no liquor license. That’s when Ron Onesti saved the day. He got the liquor license, and we started putting together what would eventually become ‘The Rat Pack Is Back.’”

The show played to sold-out houses in a variety of locations for nearly 20 years.

“It took off in 1998, and we owe much of the credit to Tony Bennett,” Ocean says. “He was the one who introduced the music to a new generation through his performances on ‘MTV Unplugged.’”

An offshoot of this musical rebirth was the opening on Rush Street of Jilly’s, which was named after Frank Sinatra’s favorite club in New York.

“It was a wonderful place, where on any given night celebrities like Tommy Lasorda, Kevin Costner, Tom Jones, Mike Ditka would show up,” Ocean says. “Out of my 8,000 shows, I can’t count the number I did at Jilly’s, but it was a lot. I’m so grateful to (owner) Stan Wozniak for bringing me in.”

Ocean’s fame began to spread nationwide, leading to appearances at the Riviera in Las Vegas, Jilly’s in New York and in Sinatra’s hometown of Hoboken, New Jersey.

“We opened for and got to meet Don Rickles, Tony Bennett, Pat Cooper,” Ocean says. “It was one of the first Rat Pack tribute shows, and I was lucky enough to perform it for two decades.”

For his commemorative show at the Des Plaines Theatre, Ocean, a 10-piece band led by Nick Psyhogios and producer Ron Onesti put together a musical retrospective that squeezed 30 years and 8,000 shows into a three-hour extravaganza. Channeling David Clayton Thomas, Rod Stewart and John Lennon, Ocean got the ball rolling with stirring renditions of “You Make Me So Very Happy,” “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You” and “Imagine.”

When Jack D’Amico took the stage and the duo launched into “That’s Life,” the audience lit up like a bonfire. A steady stream of guests followed, including the Jersey Girls, Rat Pack co-stars Elliot Wimbush and Bill Serritella, and local favorites Diva Montell and Denise Tomasello. Backup singers included Kim Peterson; Regina Karma; and Ocean’s sister, Tania.

Switching gears yet again, Ocean brought his Cheap Trick tribute band onstage. His booming voice filled the theater as he and his band performed “I Want You To Want Me,” “Dream Police” and “Surrender.” Meanwhile, the audience was dancing in the aisles, the lobby and probably the bathrooms.

The show ended with Ocean covering “Luck Be A Lady,” “New York, New York” and a rousing reprise of “My Way.” While that song signaled Sinatra’s first retirement, Ocean says he’s nowhere near ready to pack up his golf clubs and move to Palm Springs.

“I’m a long way from retirement,” Ocean says. “There’s a saying that old musicians never die; they just go from bar to bar.”

Norwegian Cruise Line Announces Tony Award-Nominated "Beetlejuice" to Debut Aboard Its Newest Innovative Ship Norwegian Viva

BEETLEJUICE 600x300

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel, today announced “Beetlejuice” The Musical as the headline production aboard its newest groundbreaking ship, Norwegian Viva , along with the ship’s full lineup of onboard entertainment offerings debuting August 2023.

Marking the first time the Tony Award ® -nominated musical will be performed at sea, the 90-minute Broadway adaptation of Tim Burton’s iconic 1988 film narrates the story of the Deetz family as they attempt to remodel an uproariously haunted house. The musical’s paranormal antics will be heightened by NCL’s three-story multi-purpose Viva Theatre & Club and its immersive special effects and cutting-edge lighting and audio.

David J. Herrera, incoming president of Norwegian Cruise Line said, "NCL has a history of pioneering the cruise experience and delivering the high-caliber entertainment programming our guests expect.  We are dedicated to pushing the envelope, delivering on those expectations, and putting our guests first as we elevate our onboard offerings for the ultimate vacation at sea.  This summer, I cannot wait to bring the fun and nostalgia of 'Beetlejuice' to our all-new Norwegian Viva."

NCL’s Senior Vice President of Entertainment and Cruise Programming, Richard Ambrose, adds, “We pride ourselves on not only delivering amazing performances for theater fans but introducing guests to Broadway and West End-caliber shows, which are made even more special by the incredible setting of the Viva Theatre & Club that seamlessly transforms from a best-in-class theater experience to an expansive nightclub.”

The elaborate "Beetlejuice" production will charm and captivate guests as performers dance and sing along to show tune classics including "Day-O," and "Jump in the Line (Shake, Senora)," while also reveling in the nostalgia from the pop culture classic film. Michelle D'Amico, who was a cast member of the Broadway production of "Beetlejuice" will join Norwegian Viva playing the role as "Lydia" for the first-at-sea rendition.

Norwegian Cruise Line is known for its unwavering commitment to bringing world-class productions to the high seas, having previously debuted shows including "Six," "Jersey Boys," "Footloose" and more across its current 18 - ship fleet. This announcement also comes on the heels of the wildly popular debut of "Summer: The Donna Summer Musical," aboard Norwegian Prima, which featured a show-stopping performance from "American Idol" season two finalist, Kimberley Locke, during its 2022 inaugural season.

Richard Ambrose, Senior Vice President of Entertainment and Cruise Programming, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

We pride ourselves on not only delivering amazing performances for theater fans but introducing guests to Broadway and West End-caliber shows, which are made even more special by the incredible setting of the Viva Theatre & Club that seamlessly transforms from a best-in-class theater experience to an expansive nightclub.

After the successful debut of one of the world's most iconic game shows, "The Price is Right LIVE," aboard Norwegian Prima last year, Norwegian Viva will also offer a live game show experience with the cruise industry's first "Press Your Luck LIVE" at-sea. The immersive experience invites the audience to be part of the classic show and win incredible grand prizes.

The palatial Viva Theater & Club features sophisticated special effects, a multi-story video wall, a show-stopping chandelier and VIP lounge seating, making it the ideal venue for Vegas-style night club events, such as “Ocean Music Fest,” the ultimate jam session where multiple musicians merge their talents on one stage for a world-class immersive concert.

Norwegian Viva will also feature returning guest favorites, including "Improv @ Sea" Comedy Club; "Syd Norman's Pour House," which features rock-and-roll tributes to Fleetwood Mac, The Rolling Stones, and other legendary artists of the Classic Rock genre; and more.

Norwegian Viva is the second of six vessels in the Cruise Line’s highly anticipated  Prima Class , the Brand's first new class of ships in nearly 10 years. The elevated offerings of the Prima Class prioritize guest experience and raise the bar on cruising through world class cuisine, the Brand's most spacious design yet, and stellar onboard activities including the Viva Speedway-the three-level racetrack. Boasting nine new dining and beverage options, guests can sample cuisines from around the world by visiting Indulge Food Hall, the upscale food market exhibiting 11 unique eateries; or enjoy the elevated menus at Hudson's, the complimentary restaurant overlooking 270-degrees of ocean views. Norwegian Viva also features the fastest slides at sea, The Drop and Rush, and NCL's industry-exclusive sustainable cocktail bar with Metropolitan Bar.  Debuting in August 2023, Norwegian Viva will sail a selection of bucket-list worthy Greek Isles and Mediterranean voyages through November, before homeporting in San Juan, Puerto Rico in December for a season of Caribbean itineraries.

Dean Martin’s real name was Dino Paul Crocetti and he was born in Steubenville, a city in eastern Ohio. Tony Ocean, whose real name is Maurizio Carrara, was born outside of Chicago. Dean Martin died on Christmas Day in 1995 but Tony Ocean, who was born a few days after Christmas in 1962, is going strong at 60 years old, performing many nights a week, keeping alive that vanishing entertainment of freewheeling glory known as showbiz.

“Dean and I have been tied together in song for a long time,” Ocean says. “I’ve sung Dean’s ‘(Ain’t That a) Kick in the Head’ a lot more times than he ever did.”

He has also, it can be persuasively argued, sung “My Way” more than Frank Sinatra because he has been in the singing business for more than three decades and counting, figuring he has had 8,000 performances and counting.

His showbiz durability was celebrated in late May with a 30th anniversary show at the Des Plaines Theatre. It drew more than 600 people and made Ocean feel “blessed and proud and humbled.”

He will tell you that “I am not the greatest singer” but he has sung in Las Vegas, Arizona, New York, Aruba and elsewhere. He has opened for Tony Bennett and Don Rickles. He has thousands of devoted fans spread across this area.

Ocean has been singing for as long as he can remember, which takes him back in time to his birth shortly after his parents Giovanni and Graziella Carrara moved from Lucca, a small village in Northern Italy and settling in Cicero. His sister and father worked for the Gonnella Baking Co. That was to have been Ocean’s career destination too and he started working there while going to Elmwood Park High School, where he was in a choir group that once performed for Pope Paul VI in Rome.

On weekends, he started singing in rock bands. There were many of them, names that are now forgotten. But it was as one of the five members of The Big Band Rodeo that he finished in second place during a 1992 edition of the Ed McMahon-hosted TV talent fest called “Star Search.”

Fame deferred, he soon caught the attention of a producer when singing Dean Martin songs at a karaoke bar, which led to him being cast as Martin in, “The Pack is Back,” a tribute show to Martin, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr.

Audience members in a packed bar at ZaZa's Tavola Italiana react to singer Tony Ocean, left, as he performs on Jan 5, 2023, in Lake Barrington.

That was when he changed his name. “Nobody could pronounce my real name so I borrowed the name from the Sinatra character in ‘Ocean’s Eleven,'” he says. “He was Danny Ocean in the movie but people told me, ‘You look more like a Tony than a Danny.’ And so that is how Tony Ocean was born.”

“The Pack is Back” enjoyed serious success, including years at Piper’s Alley in Old Town.

I saw him in that show and, after it ended its run, many other times over the next 15 years when he was a house act at Jilly’s, once a popular Rush Street saloon.

“It was a small place, no food and filled with smoke. But it was great. It opened a lot of doors for me,” Ocean says. “I performed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights. Met all sorts of people, like Kevin Costner, Tom Jones. I made all kinds of connections that led to a lot of great gigs and some good friendships.”

His conversation still pleasantly touched with a neighborhood accent, he is a lively and personable sort. His stage presence is of a compelling and palpable aim-to-please energy. Though he has sung many songs thousands of times, he seems to bring new life to whatever pours from his mouth.

“Another part is just the music I perform,” he says. “Martin, Sinatra and hits of the ’50s to the ’80s.” But he also gives audiences the music of Cheap Trick (in the form of his tribute band “The Dream Police”) and his shows and CDs feature the work of such unexpected but welcome performers as the great Bonnie Koloc.

“To do what I do I really have to be a human jukebox,” Ocean says. “People want to hear songs they know, songs that can bring back memories. And I still do love rock and roll.”

He says it’s the audiences who make the shows.

“Some people are there to forget whatever problems they have in their daily lives and some of the songs take them back. There’s an old-school cool to it too. People are dressed up and for three hours at least, they can pretend they are living life the way it used to be, the way they used to be.”

He is ever mentioning members of his bands and support personnel, and talks about how worried they all were when the pandemic curtailed performances. But during that time, he could still be found at socially-distanced outdoor venues, one of them the driveway of his home in Elk Grove Village.

There Ocean could also be found sitting around the fire pit in his backyard, indulging in the three or four cigars he smokes each day and maybe a cocktail. He used to, like Sinatra, be fond of Jack Daniel’s. “Lately, it’s been vodka and water,” he says.

His backyard interludes inspired “Ocean’s Pit,” an internet venture that started on Facebook and has since spread to other platforms. It’s a weekday talk show that he calls “a little show about big things” and it features him talking about life, politics, sports and business, and interviewing all sorts of guests, from first responders to such celebrities as actors Tom Dreesen and Michael Madsen. He built a studio in his home and there have been a few remote broadcasts from various restaurants. In October, it was named Internet Show of the Year at the Josie Music Awards, a global, multigenre award show.

On Thursdays, Ocean’s wife Laura is his co-host. She is his fourth wife and they first met long ago at — where else? — one of his performances. They have children from previous marriages and they both understand the demands of his career.

“She is my rock, my partner in everything,” he says. “She understands the world we have and me. There are some days when I think ‘I don’t want to go out, I don’t want to perform.’ It can be tough. But she gets it. She knows.

“And then comes what Laura calls ‘shower time,’ time for me to get ready. When I get out of that shower I am Tony Ocean and I’m ready to go. It’s like having a split personality, I guess.”

Now, ain’t that a kick in the head?

Cruise 101: Entertainment at Sea

From aquatic acrobats to broadway-style shows, there’s more than enough to see and do on our ships..

tony ocean cruise

The West End comes to the high seas in Ben Elton's We Will Rock You, the Olivier Award-winning musical phenomenon.

Credit: Royal Caribbean

While there’s no shortage of  high-adrenaline adventures and relaxing alternatives  we offer on board our cruises, these options tend to be the most well-known. But many first-time cruisers are less familiar with another area of programming for which Royal Caribbean is famous: shows and entertainment.

All Royal Caribbean ships offer dazzling, full-scale productions every night, like dizzying high-dive shows and Tony Award-winning Broadway musicals, as well as comedy and ice-skating shows—all included in the cost of your cruise. Read on for our entertainment rundown and tips for making the most of your Royal Caribbean experience.

First, The Details

Terms like “Broadway” may conjure the image of large dollar signs, so it’s no wonder first-time guests ask, “Is entertainment free on board?” Many people don’t realize they can enjoy this top-notch entertainment without paying more.

What’s more, each performance has several show times, sometimes twice a day, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to catch as many shows as you’d like. One important thing to note, however, is that you should reserve seats in advance. Once you’ve booked your cruise, you can pre-book seats ahead of your sailing with our online Cruise Planner , or make reservations with guest services on board when you arrive.

The Broadway name isn’t invoked lightly: we opened our own production studio , serving as a dedicated training ground, gym and costuming center for every performer on a Royal Caribbean ship. The 132,500-square-foot studio in North Miami opens its doors to top-rated talent from around the world and creates award-winning performances in musical theater, including Grease , CATS and Mamma Mia!

Royal Caribbean is also the first and only cruise line with ice-skating rinks on board (you’ll find them on Oasis-, Freedom-, and Voyager-class ships .) These rinks, known as  Studio B , offer guests exclusive ice spectaculars featuring professional skaters—and even former Olympians—performing shows like How To Train Your Dragon On Ice , which is found on Voyager-class ships.

Another jaw-dropping venue for guests on Oasis-class ships is the AquaTheater, an outdoor, acrobatic diving space that features three diving heights (the highest clocking in at nearly 60 feet) and a hydraulic-floored pool—the largest and deepest freshwater pool at sea. With 104 water jets and three stage platforms, its acrobats, divers and other performers carry out eye-popping feats for audiences as large as 700.

There’s plenty to do after the shows end, too: live bands playing at the ships’ pubs, salsa dancing in the Latin-inspired Boleros lounge, side-splitting sets in comedy clubs, and DJs spinning at multi-level nightclubs and pool parties. And if you’re feeling lucky, there’s the Vegas-style casino that offers a wide array of slots, table games, tournaments and more at your fingertips.

Some ships even have their own music hall, karaoke lounge and piano bar sing-alongs. All boast parties you won’t want to miss, from theme nights and game shows to pool festivities and movie screenings.

Younger Travelers

Kids aren’t left out of the fun: travelers ages three through 11 have their own exclusive hangouts, classes, parties and activities—even their very own dedicated program, Adventure Ocean . All teen travelers ages 12-17 can meet up and play games at an exclusive lounge or join the Scratch DJ Academy, designed for those who want to be the entertainment—and not just be entertained.

If you’re ready to make the most of the entertainment at sea, you can start planning for your cruise vacation here .

If you’re already thinking about what to bring, summers in Mexico are hot and humid, averaging in the 90s. Winters are mild with occasional showers. Below is a checklist to help you pack for your exceptional travel experience. Remember that your luggage will be delivered to your cabin at an unspecified time on the day of departure, so it’s a good idea to pack a change of clothes, toiletries and any medications you need in a carry-on bag to bring with you.

Packing Checklist

  • Casual clothes including pants, jeans, shorts, T-shirts, collared shirts or blouses
  • Light sweater or jacket
  • Semi-formal clothes or dress clothes for 1-2 evenings, depending on the length of your cruise
  • Bathing suit and a cover-up or wrap
  • Light raincoat or compact umbrella
  • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals with rubber soles
  • Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Toiletries, in a sealed, clear bag inside your luggage
  • Minor First Aid care items such as Band-Aids, aspirin, hand sanitizer, etc.
  • Medications in their original containers
  • Hair care appliances (see information on Using Electronics)
  • Small bag or backpack for port days; large enough to carry your camera and other personal items
  • Passport with separate photocopy

Dining Dress Code

On a typical seven-day cruise, you’ll have two nights of dressing up for dinner or other special events. We suggest a semi-formal dress or skirt and blouse for women and a dark suit for men. The remaining dinners on the cruise are informal—blouse and pants for women; and collared shirt with trousers for men. Remember that T-shirts, shorts or tank tops are not permitted in the dining room.

Packing Tips

Make certain your suitcase closes and fastens securely. Mark your luggage and carry-on bag with your name and address so you can distinguish them easily. We also recommend you put identification information—name, address and phone number—INSIDE your luggage in case the luggage tags are lost in transit. We also suggest keeping your essential toiletries and a one-day change of clothes in your carry-on. Do not pack your passport or travel documents in your luggage. It is suggested that you keep a color copy of the information page of your passport inside your luggage if your passport is lost.

For more information, please call one of our Reservation Coordinators at 800 247 1899 , Monday through Friday between 8:30am – 5:00pm, Pacific Time.

We know how nice it is to have the convenience of home when traveling on a cruise. Bringing your electronics and hair appliances can enhance your overall travel experience. Every cruise ship has plugs that accept U.S. and Continental European devices, and you do not need to bring plug adaptors. Here are some things to know about your electronics before you pack them:

Phones, MP3 Players, Laptops, Cameras & Video Cameras

Most small digital devices have chargers that will fit in the plugs on a cruise ship. One thing to be mindful of is the limited plugs in each cabin; you may want to bring a multi-plug extension cord.

Blow Dryers, Curling Irons & Straighteners

Each stateroom has a hair dryer for your personal convenience. If you prefer your hair appliances, you may want to consider purchasing or borrowing compact and travel-friendly appliances.

For more information, please call one of our Reservation Coordinators at 800 247 1899 , Monday through Friday between 8:30am-5:00pm, Pacific Time.

The scenic beauty of Mexico can be enjoyed from onboard the ship and to make the most of your cruise vacation, you can also get out into the local ports. Shore excursions offer something for everyone. Choose from city tours, culinary explorations, shopping outings, cultural activities and more.

Because shore excursions have limited capacity and fill up quickly, we recommend you book early for the best selection on your cruise. Once you’ve booked your Inspiration cruise, check out the customized cruise line excursion list based on your itinerary. Using your cruise booking number, you can easily book shore excursions online as early as 60 days before your trip and up to 3 days before departure, depending on the cruise line.

Visit the cruise line’s website to find information on specific excursions:

  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Holland America Line
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Royal Caribbean International

You may also register for your Shore Excursions once onboard the ship. All shore excursion requests are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Waitlisted requests for sold-out shore excursions will be processed before requests made onboard.

For more information please call one of our Reservation Coordinators at 800 247 1899 , Monday through Friday between 8:30am-5:00pm, Pacific Time.

Here are a few ways to make the most of your cruise to Mexico:

We want to help make your trip as smooth and as enjoyable as possible. We can book motorcoach transfers for you from the airport to your cruise departure port and on your return trip.

Hotel Stays

Remember that you always have the option of arriving earlier or staying later. For example, hotel reservations may be available if you want to arrive a few days early before boarding your cruise or stay a few days after the cruise returns.

As you plan for your upcoming Christian cruise with Inspiration, you may wonder about using money and credit cards during your travels. We’ve made the following recommendations to help you save money, avoid unnecessary fees and focus on an exceptional travel experience.

  • Consider leaving all unnecessary credit cards at home.
  • Once you determine which cards you’ll bring, remember to notify each credit card company of your intended travel dates and locations to ensure fraud alerts and holds are not placed on your accounts.
  • For each card, you’ll want to store the bank’s contact information in a separate, secure location in the unlikely event your wallet or purse is lost or stolen.

Almost all Mexican destinations accept U.S. credit or debit cards (debit cards will only work with ATMs, however, as most Mexican businesses don’t have PIN machines). If you plan to use your credit cards, you’ll want to check with each credit card company to determine the international exchange fee for each card. Because the difference of a few percentage points could cost you more (depending on your purchases), we recommend using cards with lower international exchange fees. Using your credit card for large purchases gives you more protection for the items you buy on your trip. You can review your credit card statement to verify all of your purchases.

Mexico’s official currency is the Peso (MEX$), however, U.S. dollars are widely accepted. Most businesses will give change back in U.S. dollars, but it is always a good idea to bring small bills if you get change in Pesos. If traveling with currency other than the U.S. dollar you may exchange money onboard the ship, although we always recommend checking the exchange rate before traveling to a foreign country.

Today’s technology allows you to stay connected while traveling—ensuring you get that memorable photo or message from your loved ones. On most ships, you should be able to use your cell phone or smartphone to do everything you’re used to doing at home. In addition, mobile phones provide convenient access for emergencies and confirming travel plans. Some basic guidelines and tips will help you save money, keep your phone working effectively and stay in touch.

Before you leave

Contacting your cell phone carrier before your trip will help ensure you can call friends and family back home and eliminate any surprises on your phone bill when you return. Let your phone carrier know your travel plans, including how you plan to use your phone on your cruise. You’ll want to make sure you understand all of the potential charges. Contact your carrier for specific information.

Check with your carrier for international dialing access

You will want to make sure international and cruise package dialing is active on your mobile phone plan so that you can use it in Caribbean ports, and remember that international and maritime roaming rates will apply to calls placed onboard the ship (charges will appear on your phone bill). Because roaming rates can be high on cruises, checking with your carrier for specific cost details before you leave is a good idea.

Aboard your flight and cruise

Your cell phone’s battery life is the key to keeping you connected. Below are some tips for staying powered up on your trip:

  • Remember to set your phone to Airplane Mode when you board your flight. You can also do this aboard the cruise when sailing to avoid roaming charges unless you have the cruise ship package with your carrier. This suspends all calling and texting functions but still allows you to play games, use your camera and listen to music, etc.
  • On the cruise, you’ll want to charge your phone every night to ensure enough battery life for the next day.
  • Try to turn off your phone when you’re not using it. Leaving your phone on all day drains the battery, so it’s a good idea to turn it off while you’re on a shore excursion, eating or reading.

Smartphone tips

As one of the most popular communication devices today, smartphones have revolutionized how we connect and the world. We know leaving your smartphone behind for an hour, much less multiple days is difficult. The following tips will help you save your phone’s battery life and get the most out of your smartphone while on the cruise:

  • Before your cruise, you’ll want to disable any applications that give you regular updates, such as sports reports and weather updates.
  • Disable the Data Enabled or Data Roaming option on your phone and keep it off until you reach your destination. Turn off the function for “Automatic” checking of emails and change the email settings to “Manual” to reduce data roaming charges. During your trip, you can check for email messages when connected to a free, wireless Internet connection, such as in a hotel lobby or Internet cafe while in port.

In-room phones and phone cards

If you choose to not bring your mobile phone, you can stay in touch with others while on your cruise using the in-room phones. Please make sure you understand all of the charges associated with this before you place your call, as the rates can be expensive.

Your cruise vacation allows you to travel without the hassle of checking in and out of hotels, packing and unpacking, and spending valuable time trying to find quality restaurants–all with excellent service dedicated to enhancing your exceptional travel experience.

Each cruise line makes rewarding the excellent service you’ll receive onboard easy. A gratuity of $16-$19 per day (depending on the cruise line and cabin category), per guest for dining and stateroom services will be automatically added daily to your shipboard account. The cruise line also will automatically add an 18% service charge to beverages purchased through your onboard account. Before the end of the cruise, the Cruise Director will address more specific questions regarding tipping procedures.

If you take a taxi to the pier, it’s common to simply round up to the next dollar when paying your tab. The cab drivers appreciate this, and it is considered part of their income. When you arrive at the ship on embarkation day, we suggest tipping the porters at the pier $1.25 per bag when they take your luggage to place it on the ship.

A 15-20% tip for restaurant service workers is appreciated when visiting restaurants off the ship and during shore excursions.

Depending on your itinerary, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to explore the cities, beaches and attractions of each stop. Most Mexican ports will have shopping districts within an easily walkable distance from the cruise ship. You’ll also want to take a siesta in the sun, since Mexico is home to some of the best beaches in the world. Other more adventurous activities, like snorkeling a coral reef or swimming with dolphins, are available at many ports. And don’t miss the amazing food!

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

tony ocean cruise

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

tony ocean cruise

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

tony ocean cruise

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

tony ocean cruise

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

tony ocean cruise

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

tony ocean cruise

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

tony ocean cruise

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
