The 12 Best Things to Do in Rayong, Thailand

rayong travel guide

suppixz/Getty Images

Many of the best things to do in Rayong get skipped over by the foreign travelers headed directly for Koh Samet, one of the nicest islands near Bangkok . Although Rayong’s beaches can’t be described as pristine, there are numerous other reasons to look around before answering Koh Samet’s alluring call.

Rayong feels far more “local” than tourist oriented. You won’t see as many signs in English, but you will meet plenty of friendly Thai students, couples, and families; many come from Bangkok. Unlike the beaches nearer Bangkok, the few backpackers you encounter won’t be stumbling around hungover from too much Chang.

When to Go: The dry season runs from November to April ; September is the rainiest month. Rayong and nearby Koh Samet become noticeably busier on weekends as scores of people flee Bangkok in search of fresher air.

Go to Koh Samet

thebang/Getty Images

In many ways, Rayong city is relegated to the same fate as Surat Thani and Krabi Town — it’s merely a stopover or hub for travelers on their way to one of Thailand’s many inviting islands .

Koh Samet is one of the best island choices near Bangkok and the most popular in Rayong Province. Travelers who don’t have time to get to the Samui Archipelago , Koh Chang , or the islands on the other side of Thailand often default to Koh Samet.

Most of Koh Samet is designated as a national park. Although rubbish is a problem in the park itself, the cleaned-up beaches are noticeably more pristine than the ones on the mainland. Haad Sai Kaew and Ao Phai are two of the most popular beaches on Koh Samet; however, quieter beaches line the eastern coast. Ao Wai is just one of the many beautiful options.

If enjoying blue water and nice sand are priorities for your trip, the 45-minute ferry over to Koh Samet is a good investment.

Visit the Rayong Aquarium

lifeispixels/Getty Images

Most visitors to the Rayong Aquarium go inside with low expectations but leave with big smiles. Sure, it’s a somewhat-limited aquarium compared to the massive operations seen in other cities; however, the 43 tanks and glass tunnel contain just enough underwater wonders.

The Rayong Aquarium doesn’t take long to visit, and the entrance fee of 30 baht (USD $1) is especially reasonable. Families traveling with children should keep the aquarium in mind — particularly for hot or rainy afternoons when going to the beach sounds less appealing.

Officially known as the “Rayong Aquatic Animal Husbandry Station,” the aquarium is open daily (closed on Mondays) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; open an hour later on Saturdays and Sundays.

Go to the Beach

 Siririt Boonsombut/EyeEm/Getty Images

Rayong is blessed with miles and miles of coastline although many of the beaches don’t qualify as the type tourists usually seek.

The many mainland beach choices are good for a quick fix of sea views, however, many are plagued with plastic rubbish. Seasonal tidal surges sometimes displace the soft sand leaving behind a scene of tangled tree roots and grass. That said, many of Rayong’s beaches are still enjoyable for walking and beach combing. An abundance of stalls and restaurants along the coast showcase fresh seafood from the local fishing community.

Haad Saeng Chan is the easiest beach to access from Rayong, but it’s deliberately divided into subsections by man-made walls to break the tides. Much of the coastline south of Rayong city is a saw-toothed beach, making it less ideal for the usual activities of walking, swimming, and sunbathing. Faults aside, Haad Saeng Chan is a good place for eating; you’ll find the highest concentration of fishing boats and seafood opportunities.

If going over to Koh Samet isn’t an option for your beach fix, head to Haad Mae Ramphueng — or better yet, Laem Mae Phim — for a slightly improved day on the sand. Phala Beach and Suan Son, famous for the pine trees, are also decent alternatives.

Celebrate a Thai Poet

Kwhisky/Getty Images

Sunthorn Phu (1782-1809) was a celebrated royal poet who has been recognized by UNESCO for his work. If you’ve been to Koh Samet, the bizarre mermaid statues are characters from his epic fantasy, "Phra Aphai Mani " — a 48,700-line masterpiece that took him 22 years to finish!

Sunthorn Phu was a character. He served some jail time, enjoyed alcohol, and was married or involved in scandalous romances many times. Around the same time as Sunthorn Phu, Lord Byron was creating his own scandalous legacy on the other side of the world.

Although Sunthorn was born in Bangkok, his father was from Rayong. The poet’s memorial park with sculptures and landscaped grounds is located around 31 miles (50 kilometers) east of Rayong city. The memorial is a worthwhile stop on the way to the Golden Meadow mangrove park.

Get in the Golden Meadow Mangroves

Buball/Getty Images

Serious mangrove and bird enthusiasts should invest the time to drive to the Golden Meadow (Tung Prong Thong) on the eastern edge of Rayong Province. A wooden boardwalk winds through fields of mangroves and the park woos visitors with an otherworldly atmosphere. The canopy appears to glow golden on sunny days.

Don’t expect many signs in English, but you can count on serenity and fresh air free from the drone of motorbikes. Although facilities are well maintained, most of the walkway lacks handrails. Travelers with small children will have to ensure they don’t step off into the swamp. Short boat rides are available.

You pretty well need a vehicle ( scooter rental is an option ) or driver to reach Tung Prong Thong; it’s over an hour drive east of Rayong city.

Scramble Around a Warship

SangSanit/Getty Images

After visiting Tung Prong Thong, walk (30 minutes) or drive (10 minutes) over to the HTMS Prasae, a retired Royal Thai Navy warship converted into a historical display. You can explore and climb around on your own, but don't expect it to be clean: The ship is decaying and largely unrestored.

The HTMS Prasae was originally commissioned as the USS Gallup and saw action in World War II and the Korean War. In 1951, the ship was transferred to Thailand and served in the Royal Thai Navy as the HTMS Prasae until June 22, 2000.

The HTMS Prasae is open for visitors seven days a week from 7 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Entrance is free.

See More Mangroves and Climb the Skyview Tower

smalldaruma/Getty Images

If going to the Golden Meadow and HTMS Prasae are too much of a commitment, the Mangrove Research Center is only 15 minutes from the city and can be explored in less than an hour. Climbing an 11-story tower rewards you with aerial views of the nature reserve.

Again, don’t expect English translations on signs. Also like Tung Prong Thong, the elevated walkways above the swamp do not have handrails.

Walk Yomjinda Road (Old Town)

Gatetaixin/Wikimedia Commons/ CC BY-SA 4.0

The strip of Yomjinda Road that runs parallel to the river has been restored into a charming “old town” of sorts with teak buildings and considerable Chinese influence. Begin your wandering on Yomjinda Road at the King Taksin Shrine, and plan to include the City Pillar and Wat Pa Pradu. Numerous cafes, small museums, and art galleries provide diversions.

See a Reversed Buddha Statue

pinyoj/Getty Images

Wat Pa Pradu is a small, local temple located across Sukhumvit Road from the City Pillar and Yomjinda Road. You may have already hit burnout after seeing so many temples in Thailand , but the reclining Buddha statue in Wat Pa Pradu is unique.

Instead of resting on his right side as is portrayed all over the world, the Buddha here is seen on his left side. Reclining Buddha statues are meant to depict the final moments of Guatama Buddha on earth shortly before he succumbed to what is believed to have been food poisoning.

Visit the King Taksin Shrine

Damdramatic/Wikimedia Commons/ CC BY-SA 3.0

Taksin the Great (1734-1782) is credited with rebuilding Siamese forces after the Burmese attacked and destroyed Ayutthaya . He repelled the invaders, took back Ayutthaya, and established the new capital at what would eventually become Bangkok. For obvious reasons, he’s lauded as a hero in Thai history.

The concrete elephant and tree covered by ribbons mark a spot where Taksin reportedly tied up his elephant. A visit to the Taksin Shrine can be a quick, interesting stop as you wander around Rayong’s Old Town area.

Find the shrine to King Taksin near the Lum Mahachai Temple, a five-minute walk east from the City Pillar.

See the Rayong City Pillar

The Rayong City Pillar Shrine is located on Lak Muang Road just a couple of blocks north of Yomjinda Road. The colorful shrine and ancient pillar are said to embody the spirit of the city. Locals make donations here, say prayers, and burn incense — be respectful and behave the same way you would when visiting a temple .

The Rayong City Pillar Shrine is open daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.; it is an epicenter in Rayong for the Songkran Festival in April .

Enjoy Fruit and Seafood

BirdShutterB/Getty Images

Rayong Province is celebrated throughout Thailand for the excellent fruit and dried/preserved seafood products. Whether the two go together or not is up to you, but don't leave town before trying some of the best fruit in Thailand! If you’ve ever enjoyed nam pla , Thailand’s devilishly pungent-but-delicious fish sauce, there’s a good chance it came from Rayong.

Dragon fruit and papaya are two exceptions; however, most of the fruit choices are in their prime during Thailand’s rainy season between May and November. Mangosteens, when in season, are healthy and unforgettable. Have a look at the Star Night Bazaar/Market (5-10 p.m.) for the freshest stuff.

During the daytime, check out Thapong Fruit Market or the sprawling Ban Phe Market, the gargantuan building with only writing on the front. The usual rules of shopping in Thai markets apply , and you may need to haggle a bit . Some stalls offer samples.

Rayong produces what is considered Thailand’s best dried squid, shrimp, and fish. Although all the markets will have products for sale, the market by Nuan Thip Pier (the one for getting to Koh Samet) has an exceptional selection.

If you prefer your seafood a little less flat and dried, choose any of the many eateries along Riep Jai Fang Road, the coastal road.

The beautiful view of Rayong

History of Rayong

Rayong, Thailand's captivating coastal haven, boasts a past as rich as its present. Its story stretches back over 2,000 years, weaving through ancient empires, bustling trade routes, and cultural flourishes.

Early evidence suggests settlements in the Rayong area from the Bronze Age. During the Khmer Empire's reign, it evolved into a significant trading hub, particularly for salt and fish sauce production. Remnants of this era can be found at Prasat Hin Khao Phra Bat, a 12th-century temple complex nestled in Khao Laem Ya - Khao Samet National Park.

Following the decline of the Khmer Empire, Rayong flourished under the Ayutthaya kingdom, further solidifying its reputation as a vital port. This prosperity continued into the Rattanakosin period, with Rayong playing a crucial role in King Taksin's rebellion against the Burmese. His victory led to the establishment of the Thonburi kingdom, and a statue honoring him can be found at Wat Pa Pradu temple in Rayong.

Today, Rayong's historical tapestry continues to unravel, reflected in its ancient temples, archaeological sites, and traditional fishing communities.

Rayong Travel Guide

In a nutshell.

If you’re looking to visit a province with hardly any foreign tourists, then Rayong could be exactly what you are looking for.

Why go to Rayong

Most foreign travellers you do see here will be on their way to Koh Samet , with most choosing not to visit Rayong town or any of the mainland beaches .

Although foreigners are scarce, the coast is popular with Thai tourists, who make the two hour drive from Bangkok to escape the city and enjoy some beach time. The beach stretches for at least 40km along the coast (although some of this is private or deserted), so even when it’s busy, there’s still plenty of room for everyone.

The town itself is also worthy of a day trip , thanks to an eclectic mix of Thai temples, Chinese shrines, and a French colonial old quarter. There are also several markets to explore, such as the Tapong Fruit Market, which is bursting with tropical fruit during the rainy season. However, if you just want to relax on the beach, it’s best to use Ban Phe as a base, or stay in one of the numerous beachside resorts. The main beach areas are Mae Rumphueng, Ban Phe and Laem Mae Phim, but the most beachside resorts have their own private beach too.

In addition to exploring the old town quarter and visiting the coast, Rayong province has several other attractions, including a waterpark for small children, a national park, and a small amusement park called Strawberry town. The national park is great for hiking, swimming in waterfalls, and enjoying some nature. The other two attractions will provide some fun, but are mostly just good places to go if you have some extra time on your hands.

When to go to Rayong

Because Rayong is mostly a beach destination , it’s best to visit Rayong during the dry and cool season from November to February. But, if you want to sample tropical fruit as well, the early part of the rainy season (June and July) sees some of the heat disappear and it will most likely only rain for a few hours, and not every day.

Where to stay in Rayong

As mentioned above, most of the accommodation in Rayong along the coast is in the form of midrange and luxury resorts. For budget accommodation, it’s best to stay in Ban Phe, which is home to several cheap guesthouses focused on attracting the backpacking crowd heading onwards to Koh Samet. In Rayong town, the accommodation isn’t particularly impressive, but there are several comfortable options, conveniently located close by to the bus terminal and old town (e.g. Casa V1 and Central Place).

Where to eat in Rayong

Surprisingly, Rayong has a good variety of international restaurants , despite the low numbers of foreign travellers. There’s a Korean restaurant, a steakhouse, a bierhaus, and if don’t mind the journey, an Indian restaurant just outside of town. Of course, there are also plenty of Thai eateries, including the local favourite, Naidol Makham Thao.

Rayong is also very famous for its fresh seafood, although the best quality can be found on the coast. However, if you’re not planning on visiting the coast, check out Laem Cha Reon. It’s close to town, the seafood is great, and they have a large terrace with great sea views. Along the coast, the number of seafood restaurants is overwhelming. In the Ban Phe area, good choices include Talay Rayong and Baan Rabeang Mai (just west of Seree pier).

How to get around Rayong

Getting around Rayong town is pretty simple, as you can easily walk around the main downtown area where the majority of restaurants, cafes and accommodations are located.

If you want to do a bit more exploring, Caza V1 hotel rents both bicycles and motorbikes , or you can hail a motorbike taxi or songthaew . Both of these are also useful for reaching the coastal areas of Mae Rumphueng and Ban Phe. Laem Mae Phim is a fairly long journey, so it would be better to hire a motorbike or take a minibus.

How to get to and from Rayong

Rayong’s popularity with Thai residents is partly due to it being one of the closest beach destinations to Bangkok, only two hours east of the capital. Its popularity also means that there are regular public buses running between Bangkok and Rayong throughout the day.

The intercity bus departs from Suvarnabhumi Airport between the hours of 6.00am and 9.00pm, and tickets can be purchased at the Intercity Bus Counter. Buses also depart from Ekkamai bus terminal regularly throughout the day, between the hours of 4.00am and 10.00pm (all bus journeys take roughly 3 hours). Unfortunately, buses between Bangkok and Rayong now terminate at a new bus terminal 10km north of Rayong. Some minibuses will take you along the main road to the city centre, but not all.

Other bus destinations include Pattaya, Chonburi, and Chanthaburi.

Rayong is connected by direct bus routes to the north and northeast of Thailand, including such provinces as Chiang Mai, Nong Khai, Nakon Ratchasima and Ubon Ratchathani. The Yellow Bus, Nakhonchai Air and other major bus operators serve Rayong.

Alternatively, if you don’t want the hassle of catching a bus, driving is relatively easy, as most of the journey is on the main highways. A car will also make it easier to reach the coast, although there are taxis and songthaews available if you choose to get the bus.

There is an airportThe U-Tapao airport, sitting half-way between Rayong Town and Pattaya, has a handful of domestic flights, including Rayong to Chiang Mai and Rayong to Phuket . An international flight from Rayong to Kuala Lumpur has been recently added by Air Asia to its regional network. With the plans to enlarge U-Tapao, more and more airlines are expect to come.

Is Rayong a safe place to visit?

Although Rayong is considered a safe province for tourists, travellers should always be careful with their valuables, especially when spending time at the beach.

For any illness or injury, there is a large hospital in Rayong town, located between Sukhumvit Soi 39 and Soi 41. However, Bangkok is only a short bus or car journey away, and is probably the better choice for anything serious. If in doubt, contact your travel insurance provider, who will recommend a hospital.

Best time to visit

Because Rayong is mostly a beach destination, it’s best to visit Rayong during the dry and cool season from November to February. But, if you want to sample tropical fruit as well, the early part of the rainy season (June and July) sees some of the heat disappear and it will most likely only rain for a few hours, and not every day.

Check the below table for the general idea of Rayong weather throughout the year.

Rayong’s current weather and 7-day forecast

Rayong boasts a charming historic quarter and the city’s beauty has been immortalized in one of Thailand’s all-time famous epics, Phra Abhai Mani. Time to immerse yourself in some Thai-style fantasy while uncovering the local stories hidden within.

Check out these top things to do in Rayong, Thailand, and enjoy authentic local experiences before the rest of the world catches on.

1. Get your dose of vitamin sea on Koh Samet

rayong travel guide

Just about 2-3 hours’ drive from Bangkok and another 40 minutes’ ferry ride, Koh Samet is truly a paradise within reach. It has always been a favorite getaway among Thai locals and is therefore well-developed. You can expect fantastic fire shows and some party scene, especially in Sai Kaew Beach and Ao Phai (Phai Bay) areas. Thankfully, the island remains well-preserved after all this time. There are also quiet beaches and bays, such as Ao Wai and Ao Pakarang. Other than enjoying banana boat and other water sports, snorkeling, fishing (including squid) and turtle and shark spotting (if you’re lucky), Koh Samet is an interesting location for Thai literature fans. Koh Kaew Pisadan in the all-time famous Thai epic poem Phra Abhai Mani is inspired by Koh Samet. Penned by the UNESCO-honored bard Sunthorn Phu, Phra Abhai Mani features not only human characters but also mythical creatures like mermaid, sea ogress and dragon horse. Don’t be surprised when you find their life-size statues scattered around Koh Samet.

2. Wonder about nature in Koh Talu area

rayong travel guide

Talu means pierced and it’s obvious where the name of the island comes from. Hop on a ferry from Koh Samet for not only the hole in the rock wall but also turquoise water, powdery white sand and the most beautiful coral reef in Rayong.

3. Indulge with the ultimate beauty and serenity on Koh Mannork

rayong travel guide

You can start your journey from either Koh Samet or Rayong city.

Nearby is Koh Mannai and the island is home to a Sea Turtle Conservation Project.

4. Get your seafood supply at Ban Phe Market

rayong travel guide

If you’re going to Koh Samet, you have to start from Ban Phe Pier. After leaving the island, don’t forget to shop for fresh seafood or seafood snacks at Ban Phe Market. From dried squid to shrimp paste, you can surely find a taste of Rayong to take home.

5. Feast on the king and the queen of fruits and more at Rayong Fruit Festival

rayong travel guide

The most important and most beautiful road in the old town area, Yomjinda Road is a strip of quaint century-old houses. Some of them are refurbished into local museums, art galleries and cafés. Said art includes photography by famous Thai photographer, Niwat Pao-in, at DaVinci Studio. You’ll also find his collection of retro stuff and works by his artist friends.

7. Pay respect to the floating pagoda, Phra Chedi Klang Nam

rayong travel guide

Back when boat was the most important mean of transportation, like a lighthouse, Phra Chedi Klang Nam signaled arrival in Rayong. Part of Wat Pak Nam, the white pagoda was built on an isle in the river and it’s one of the city’s most sacred site. Today you can easily cross the road that connects to mainland to the pagoda.

8. Watch the sunset at Khao Laem Ya

rayong travel guide

Part of Khao Laem Ya-Mu Koh Samet National Park, Khao Laem Ya is the most stunning viewpoint in Rayong. There you can see the eastern city’s vast blue sea and even Koh Samet.

Apart from the view, the hill itself is beautiful. Khao Laem Ya is both rocky and grassy, so you’ll find plenty of photo ops.

You can even camp there.

9. Relax by the sea in Phe Arboretum (Suan Son Beach)

rayong travel guide

If you don’t have enough time for Koh Samet, Suan Son Beach is a good option for relaxation. It’s swimmable and has good seafood restaurants and picnic spots. It also has a unique charm: tunnel-like rows of tall casuarina trees.

10. Marvel at the golden mangrove and live like a fisherman in Prasae

Thailand has a lot of lush mangrove forests, but it’s not every day you get to see a golden one like Thung Prong Thong in Prasae. A wooden walkway cuts through the vast yellow-green field and when sunlight catches it in the morning, it seems to turn gold. Before you reach Thung Prong Thong, you’ll have to walk through the classic green mangrove forest, so there are different kinds of beauty to behold. At the end of the trail is the 1943-built frigate HTMS Prasae Memorial and you can get onto the deck.

Forests aside, Prasae is where you can enjoy homestay. More than fresh seafood, you can get a taste of the life of local fishermen in the area.

Most of the accommodation in Rayong along the coast is in the form of midrange and luxury resorts. For budget accommodation, it’s best to stay in Ban Phe, which is home to several cheap guesthouses focused on attracting the backpacking crowd heading onwards to Koh Samet. In Rayong town, the accommodation isn’t particularly impressive, but there are several comfortable options, conveniently located close by to the bus terminal and old town.

Although Rayong is not popular with foreign visitors, this has not affected the culinary scene, which boasts a variety of cuisines including Korean, Indian, German and American. Rayong is also famous for its delicious seafood and tropical fruit, so despite there not being many tourist attractions here, you can spend your time sampling lots of great food! If you decide to skip the town itself, and just head to the coast, there are some good restaurants at the more developed beaches (Mae Rumphueng, Suan Son and Mae Phim), and most of the resorts have their own restaurants or cafes too.

Western and International Food

Starting with the international scene, your first stop should definitely be Yurak Rayong (17/7 Khlonhkhut Rd), a traditional Korean restaurant that serves a good variety of dishes. If you’ve never had Korean food before, this is the perfect opportunity, and I would list it as one of our favourite cuisines! There’s something to suit everyone, from barbequed meats to kimchi (spiced cabbage) stews.

Alternatively, you can enjoy some German comfort food and some imported beers at the German Bierhaus (Rajbamrung Soi 6 Rd). The food is authentic (as is the beer!) and they also offer a good variety of Thai dishes, pasta and pizza.

Close by to the Bierhaus, there are several nice cafes, Cake House and Happy Camper (109 Rajbamrung Rd), which are the best places to get coffee, cake and other sweet treats. There’s also Odile Steak House (Choeng Noen) for more Western food, and meat lovers will be impressed by the quality of their steaks.

Finally, if you love spicy food and curries, there’s an Indian restaurant a bit further out of town called Spices (Thanon Sukhumvit 38). As with anywhere in Thailand, international cuisine costs more than local food, so the above are probably not suitable choices if you are on a budget.

Of course, if you are visiting Thailand it’s likely you want to try the local cuisine, and Rayong has plenty of Thai restaurants to choose from. The best venues are those that are popular with the locals, such as Naidol Makham Thao (16 Khlong Khut, off Sukhumvit Road), which is very centrally located too. The food is well priced, and the menu has an excellent selection of Thai dishes, including everyone’s favourite, tom yum soup.

Or, if you want to eat somewhere a bit trendier, you should try Terra Cotta (109 Moo 2). In addition to delicious Thai food, they also prepare their own mouthwatering selection of cakes and pastries, perfect for an after lunch or dinner treat.

If you aren’t going to the coast, but looking to try some seafood, Laem Cha Reon (Riepjaifang Rd) is right by the waterfront, but very close to the town. The restaurant has a huge terrace overlooking the ocean, and guests can enjoy a wide range of dishes, from fresh crab to deep fried seabass.

That said, the coast is where to go for the freshest and most delicious seafood, and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. The more developed areas of Mae Rumphueng, Ban Phe (Suan Son beach) and Mae Phim also have several Western style restaurants too.

Around Mae Rumphueng Beach

At Mae Rumphueng beach, it’s essential that you visit the famous Tamnanpar Restaurant (167/6 Moo 7 Sukhumvit Rd), aka The Classic Forest Restaurant, where visitors can enjoy a jungle setting, complete with streams, tropical flowers, and even a small water park. The food is quite good, but most people visit for the ambience and to enjoy some beautiful nature whilst they dine. Several times it was voted the best local restaurant in Thailand and if you can, do pay them a visit. Prices are surprisingly acceptable, so there is no reason not to go.

For Western food, Mae Rumphueng is also home to Pizza Sofia (Hat Mae Rumphueng Rd), which serves good quality thin-crust pizza. It’s possible to get take-away here, so you can take it to the beach which is just across the road!

Around Ban Phe Town

In Ban Phe town, which is where to go to catch the ferry to Koh Samet and a good base for Suan Son beach, there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. There are several good seafood restaurants with views over the ocean; Talay Rayong is reasonably priced, whilst Baan Rabeang Mai is a bit pricier but closer to the water (both just west of Seree Pier).

Suan Son beach has lots of smaller seafood restaurants too. Ban Phe also has a handful of cheap Thai eateries serving pad thai and kaprao gai, close to Nuan Thip and Phe Pier.

For Western food, the best spots are either Christie’s (280/92 Liap Chai Fang Rd) or O’Leary’s (157/8 Moo 2), both of which serve various comfort food dishes, plus a good selection of cocktails and wine.

Laem Mae Phim

Further east at Laem Mae Phim beach, there are lots of seafood eateries and a couple of Western-style restaurants too. Tequila Sunrise (opposite Pimpimarn Beach Hotel, Laem Mae Phim Beach Road) has gorgeous views of the ocean, and serves both Western and Thai dishes. They also have a good cocktail selection, and the bar often has live acoustic music. Alternatively, you can head to Villa Bali (308 Moo 3 Tambon Kram) for some delicious wood-fired pizzas, live music and great atmosphere.

Thailand Scraps More Covid-19 Rules to Welcome Tourists

International travelers to Thailand will no longer be required to show proof of vaccination or ATK test results from October 1st, 2022 onward.

In a new move to attract travelers during peak season, Thailand is doing away with the requirement of needing vaccination certificates or Covid-19 negative results in the case of unvaccinated passengers. Additionally, those infected with Covid-19, but have mild symptoms don’t need to isolate from next month. The same applies to those who test positive but display no symptoms.

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced these changes on Thursday after the National Communicable Diseases Committee (NCDC) had a meeting on Wednesday.

Instead of isolating those who have contracted the disease would be required to wear a mask, socially distance themselves from others and wash their hands frequently for the first five days. They also need to stay away from those who are immunocompromised and vulnerable.

Dr. Sophon Iamsirithaworn, deputy director-general of the Department of Disease Control, informed that since the present Covid-19 mutation doesn’t cause serious symptoms in most people, disease control measures can be relaxed.

National Security Council secretary-general Supoj Malaniyom added that the new measures are being put in place to help improve the economic conditions of the country.

“The primary aim will be to ensure the economy is back on track so people could earn their livelihoods once more,” he said.

Discover Rayong: Thailand’s underrated treasure

Once overlooked in favour of other beachy locales, Rayong is finally earning a bit of international limelight. While most visitors to Thailand flock to the islands of Koh Samui, Phuket and Koh Phi Phi, locals have long loved this low-key stretch of beautiful coastline that features more elbow room and fewer selfie sticks.

In addition to pristine sands, Rayong offers a peek at traditional Thai life that is becoming increasingly hard to find in tourist-heavy spots. Many inhabitants here still make a living drying squid, catching fish and living the way their ancestors have for generations — a lifestyle worth seeing for travellers willing to take the time to explore this sleepy seaside .

Visit the magnificent Wat Pa Pradu

Source: Shutterstock

Map this location

This ornately decorated wat — building surrounded by walls often housing a Buddhist temple  —  is a great find for history buffs and culture-hounds. As an added bonus, it also has far fewer visitors than the grand temples of Bangkok, making it much more enjoyable to explore at your own pace. Built in the Ayutthaya period (between 1351 and 1767), Wat Pa Pradu borrows design from multiple cultures. Inside, you’ll find a Chinese shrine, as well a striking, 12-metre-long Buddha with his head in his left hand, an aesthetic nod to classical European sculptures.

Head to the market

Map the Tapong Fruit Market Map the Ban Phe Market

The best time to explore local markets is in the early morning hours, before the sweltering midday heat sends some vendors packing. Evenings are great too — that’s when hawkers offer up all sorts of tasty treats. Snap photos of heaps of rambutans, mangosteens and jackfruits at  Tapong Fruit Market , located just off of Sukhumvit Road in Rayong City. Head indoors for snacks and edible souvenirs at  Ban Phe Market , set in a small village up the coast from Rayong’s main hub.

Explore the historic area of Yomjinda Road

Situated near a bend in the winding Rayong River, strolling this traditional walking street is like looking into Thai history. In stark contrast to bustling Sukhumvit Road, Yomjinda Road remained underdeveloped for decades, until a group of artists, artisans and businessmen at the turn of the millennium noticed its old-fashioned allure. Revitalisation efforts, including new coffee shops, art galleries and museums, have brought new life to the area without sacrificing its original appeal. Today, travellers will find historic teak buildings, century-old trees and nostalgic ambiance.

Bask in the sun on the beach

It may not be as famous as the islands, but Rayong boasts more than a 100 kilometres of coastline. Check out Haad Mae Ramphueng, a sandy paradise plucked straight from a postcard. Even if you’re staying in the heart of the city at the Holiday Inn & Suites Rayong City Centre , it’s a fairly easy, leisurely trip to perfect day on the beach.

Cycle past stunning scenery

Rayong has more than 70 kilometres of paved trails ideal for avid cyclists. Visitors can hit the road on their own or sign up for a guided tour with  Rayong Bike Tours . This amateur cycling club welcomes participants of different skill levels from all over the globe to enjoy the spectacular scenery on two wheels. Die-hard athletes can compete with the team, while novices can join one of their more laid-back nature rides.

Enjoy authentic Thai seafood dishes

With its signature blend of savoury, salty, sweet, spicy and sour flavours, Thai cuisine is as addictive as it is unforgettable. Though there is no shortage of upscale restaurants around, many of the traditional dishes are at their best when made in a humble, family-run hole-in-the-wall.

Like any good port town, Rayong specialises in ocean-fresh fish and shellfish. You can’t go wrong ordering the catch of the day simply grilled with a piquant dipping sauce made from lime and bird’s eye chillies. Or try ordering the classic pla neung manao — a sumptuous whole steamed fish with garlic and citrus — or poo pad pong curry ( video recipe ), which is stir-fried crab with a mild curry sauce. You’ll find all these staples and more at the frills-free Had Saengchan Seafood Restaurant.

If you’re ready to surprised and enriched by a less common Thailand destination, Rayong is the perfect getaway. From authentic local foods to glances into Thai history, this unexpected region is as fascinating as it is beautiful.

Visit Rayong

Escape from the bustle of Bangkok in just over two hours’ drive to this beachside city surrounded by tropical fruit farms. Rayong has plenty of temples and shrines to explore, farms where you can pick your own fruit and the Rayong Aquarium. Rayong City is also the gateway to the Khao Chamao-Khao Wong National Park.

Spend a few hours visiting the shrines and green parks of the city. Start in Shri Muang Park in the city’s center, where a Buddhist shrine, a perfect example of Thai architecture, is built atop a lake. The City Pillar Shrine on Lak Mueang Road has more Chinese elements, while Wat Pa Pradu features a 36-foot (11-meter) long reclining Buddha from the early Ayutthaya period, between the 14th and 18th centuries.

In the nearby fishing town of Ban Phe you’ll find the Sopha Arboretum, a large botanical garden with a heritage Thai stilt house that contains a ceramics museum displaying artifacts from different eras in Thai history.

Discover aquatic wildlife without the need for diving paraphernalia at the Rayong Aquarium. See reef fish and the mangrove-dwelling shellfish that provide the economic base for many of Thailand’s fishermen. The turtle pond houses hawksbills, olive and leatherback turtle species. Examine older life forms in the Fossil Museum.

Drive or take a taxi to the Khao Chamao-Khao Wong National Park to see the limestone geology and waterfalls that are the habitat of tigers and elephants. Get your admission permit at the tourist center and set out on a hike through the greenery.

Enjoy the fruits of the ocean, and of the orchard, two of Rayong City’s specialties. Head to Suphattra Land to taste longan and star fruit, and wander amid durian, rambutan and mango trees.

Feast on the catch of the day, fresh from the Gulf of Thailand, at restaurants you’ll find all along the beaches of Rayong City. Most of the city’s nightlife is concentrated around Ratbamrung Road. Have a relaxed drink at a bar, catch a concert or DJ session at the Rayong Brew or head out late to nightclubs.
