Inside Celebrity Tour Buses: The Modifications Stars Make to their Mobile Homes
Who isn’t fascinated by celebrity homes? We love seeing the outrageous additions that adorn the mansions of the rich and famous. Couches worth tens of thousands of dollars, gourmet kitchens, and master bedrooms fit for royalty aren’t uncommon inside the homes of our favorite stars.
Not surprisingly, their mobile homes are no different.
For entertainers such as supermodels, singers, and even pro golfers, touring is what pulls in the most cash— a band can take home 35% of one night’s ticket sales plus up to 50% of the merchandise profits over one tour. Tirelessly entertaining dedicated fans from New York to Chicago to Los Angeles and every city in between, these celebrities may play up to 180 gigs in one year. When work requires such lengthy stretches of traveling on the road, comfortable mobile living space is a necessity.
While it seems a bit odd at first— why not just fly from one venue to another and save the time difference?— touring with a bus really is the most cost-effective and certainly the most convenient way to move a team around. These modified tour buses take away the stress of living out of a suitcase and provide celebrities with a “home base” where they can relax, unwind, and store all of their things in one consistent spot between appearances. It isn’t just a bus— it’s an office, a bedroom, a living room, a storage area, and a communal area to bond with your band and team, all in one big box on wheels.
Between living rooms, full bedrooms, and full bathrooms, celebrities work closely with companies that specialize in modifying tour buses to make them as homely and as comfortable as possible. These celebrities also tend to put a unique “touch” on their buses, some “touches” more outrageous than others. From leather couches to over-the-top back lounges, state-of-the-art kitchens, and even upstairs (yes, upstairs) lounges, celebrities certainly know how to get creative when it comes to building a unique “home away from home.”
All buses can be divided into four basic sections: a front lounge, which functions as a living room; a kitchen, or more typically, a “kitchenette;” a bunk area, where the band sleeps; and a back lounge, which is a bit of a “wild card” on these buses.
Keep reading to have a look inside the most extravagant celebrity tour buses we could find!
THE FRONT LOUNGE
A front lounge can usually seat about 10 people. They’re very “homey,” and great for socializing with band members and entourages or hosting friends and family. On either side of the lounge are usually couches, one of which is most likely placed on a “slide—” a mechanism that slides out when the bus is parked, adding up to 60 square feet of space and creating a proper living area.
While some celebrities prefer to keep their lounges simple and sweet— as Kenny Rogers says of his humble wheeled abode, “You buy what you need and you fix it up great!” — others like to beef theirs up a bit with luxury couches, oversized TVs, or high-tech controls.
Tommy Lee’s coach features a cozy front lounge with two leather-upholstered couches costing $25,000 each.
The front lounge may also include some sort of “master control” for the entire bus. John Legend has an iPad connected to his bus’s server for controlling light settings, changing the television and music, and adjusting the air temperature. Stored right in the same server are over 1,000 movies so there’s always something good to watch on the road.
TVs are also a must-have for all front lounges, and you’d better believe they come big— Heidi Klum’s front lounge features a 46-inch screen embedded into the wall. Mariah Carey’s mobile castle features THREE 60-inch TVs plus an extra screen hidden behind her makeup mirror!
Heidi Klum and Mariah Carey ended up having two of our favorite mobile homes— we’ll explain why later.
Also included in many front lounges is a killer sound system that would compete with any typical grounded studio. The Eli Young Band’s bus includes a 12-speaker system that’s used for blasting music through after parties and rocking the bus on the road with their favorite albums. “Loud” is the best way to listen to music, right?
THE KITCHEN
After the lounge area comes the kitchen. On a typical RV, kitchens are almost nonexistent— it is, after all, quite difficult not only to store all of the usual kitchen equipment but also to make room for appliances such as a stove, oven, and microwave, not to mention necessary counter space and cabinets. On top of all of that, who even has time to cook for themselves while they’re busy playing shows? Kitchens simply aren’t a priority on the road for most. The usual mobile kitchen features are a coffee maker, an electric tea kettle, and a mini-fridge.
John Legend’s bus, however, houses a full stove top, a toaster, a microwave that doubles as a convection oven, and extra cabinet space for preparing gourmet meals in between performances.
Despite limited space, though, alcohol is always a priority. For entertaining an entourage and unwinding after big shows, drinks on-demand are a must-have. Gwen Stefani’s coach includes a wine chiller, always stocked with a wide selection of her favorite blends.
Jake Owen’s kitchen even has a beer tap— every time his band stops in a new city, they will make an agreement to trade show tickets with a local brewery in exchange for a local beer on-tap on the bus.
Ron White’s kitchen features a hidden-away humidor with two sides— one for his cigar stash, and one for his scotch.
Brad Pitt’s mobile kitchen takes the cake. His features all of the amenities of any usual kitchen— the stove, the oven, the microwave, the counter, and the cabinet space— plus a built-in full refrigerator and dishwasher, totaling a cost of $60,000 just for the kitchen— more than double what the average person spends on a kitchen remodel in their house!
Past the usual mobile kitchen, you’ll find the bunks. Sleeping on a bus sounds painfully uncomfortable, right? The way most celebrities do it, it doesn’t have to be. Typically, each bunk features its own mini television, a curtain for privacy, individual controls for air conditioning and lighting, and sometimes memory foam mattresses! The average tour bus bunk is just about the size of a regular twin-size bed.
Lee Brice, however, took it up a notch on his bus with custom oversize bunks, which they call “condo bunks,” that feature all the regular amenities at a slightly larger size for extra comfort.
Many celebrities report that sleeping in mobile bunks isn’t so bad— the movement of the bus has a tendency to rock them to sleep, which is necessary considering the grueling daily schedules they may keep during a tour.
Most buses can accommodate 6-8 bunks, in which everyone can have their defined private space separate from everybody else. You’ll usually see pictures of family, charging outlets, and various other personal belongings inside each bunk.
THE BACK LOUNGE
Back lounges are where we find some of the most unique modifications.
For the most part, celebrities keep the back lounge as their private bed area— everyone needs their own quiet space, right? There’s usually a master bathroom included in the back, too, with a full shower, walk-in closet, and counter space. Tommy Lee’s master bathroom includes a full-size shower with a TV in the wall, and a closet with a fuzzy rail to keep hangers from sliding while the bus is moving.
John Legend’s master suite includes a plush queen-sized bed that slides out just like the couches in the front lounge. Also in his master suite is a 5.1 surround-sound system, with a subwoofer under the bed to make movie-watching in the back even more exciting.
Back lounges are more than just bedrooms, though. Travis Barker’s master bed folds up into the wall with the push of a button, creating the perfect private space for practicing his drums. He’s also made room for not just one, but two bathrooms on his coach, so there’s never any fighting over who’s getting the coveted bathroom space.
Laura Bell Bundy had a dance studio built in her back lounge, complete with a full-length mirror and a ballet bar, allowing her to practice routines between shows.
Ashley Monroe’s back room has been dubbed a “girls-only zone,” where she and her girlfriends can get ready for shows together and stay secluded from the rest of her band.
However, back lounges also have many more specific uses, such as that of Hunter Hayes— situated in the back of his bus is a full recording studio, in which he makes serious progress on all of his current songs. The studio features a mixing station, multiple monitors, and 5.1 surround sound. In it, he’s finished 20-30 demos while on the road.
Our favorite back room, though, belongs to Jeff Dunham— he has a full workshop in the back of his bus where he can not only construct but also repair his puppets while on the road, ensuring that they remain in pristine condition for shows.
Now, if all of this makes you roll your eyes and say, “of course they have all that, they’re celebrities!” Just wait— we aren’t quite finished yet.
Have a look inside these 3 over-the-top celebrity homes. These coaches are so spectacular that we couldn’t even single out our favorite features above!
Supermodel Heidi Klum is the proud owner of what is possibly the “greenest” mobile home on the planet. Her office on wheels is the world’s only 100% solar-powered RV, packed with countless other “green” modifications throughout the interior and exterior.
The designers of this eco-friendly coach took great care in conserving energy in every way possible when constructing Heidi’s mobile workspace. All throughout the RV are energy-efficient LED bulbs, which draw less power and don’t add heat to the coach; and high-grade eco-friendly fabric, covering the floor and upholstery. Located by the living space is a control panel, at which one staff member is tasked with ensuring that the RV runs exclusively off of solar power for as long as possible (in the event of an emergency, the coach can easily be switched to draw power from a generator).
With a floor plan that more closely resembles a luxury hotel room than a motor home, this coach includes a total of 320 square feet of living space, including a couch, a loveseat, and a 42-inch TV. Without a bunk area like most other buses, the main living space flows into a spacious kitchenette with a full-size refrigerator, a desk made completely out of recycled wood, and a small sink. The back room serves as a makeup area and dressing room, complete with an oversize mirror surrounded by eco-friendly lights, and a professional- grade hair-washing sink.
MARIAH CAREY
Just the front lounge and kitchen of Mariah Carey’s mobile mansion cover 600 square feet— bigger than most New York studio apartments! The lounge includes a 15-foot custom couch, a 25-foot slide on one side, and a 30-foot slide on the other. Facing the oversized couch is a 65-inch TV, connected to a 5.1 studio-grade surround-sound system. In the back is a full kitchen with a full stove top, refrigerator, convection oven, and a kangen water machine— a $4000 water ionizer designed to purify tap water by removing alkaline minerals.
Right by the kitchen is Mariah’s makeup station featuring a mirror surrounded by makeup lights, with a TV placed directly behind the surface of the mirror so that Mariah can watch her favorite shows while she’s getting her hair and makeup done.
Fantastic, right? We would expect nothing less from a star of Mariah’s status. But guess what? The top of this bus expands to an entire second story . That’s right— this bus is two stories tall when parked.
The second floor of this skyscraper on wheels is connected to the first by a marble staircase. Upstairs, you’ll find unique lighting with a color wheel, creating the perfect mobile dance club for Mariah and her entourage. Wrapping around the back of the dance floor is a 35-foot rounded couch that can seat up to 30 people, facing two more 60-inch TVs, one placed at either end of the bus.
All of the over-the-top amenities in this luxurious mobile tour home, which includes more than two tons of marble and stone, bring the cost to a staggering $1.8 million.
STEVE ELKINGTON
Pro golfer Steve Elkington takes the grand prize for the most insane mobile home modifications. His stunning mobile estate, which he’s nicknamed “The Big Show,” is an astounding 1,130 square feet, spread over two stories just like Mariah Carey’s moving castle. Standing in Steve’s over-the-top estate feels less like being in a bus and more like being in a cozy cottage— the coach is modeled after a golf clubhouse, meant to have that “19th-hole” vibe that all golfers love. Included in this wheeled mansion are a full washer and dryer, a full kitchen, a living room, a pro shop, a shoe rack, and a master suite, all on one massive mobile manor.
The kitchen features a full gas stove, an oven, and high-end appliances, with a restaurant-style booth for dining. The living room features a typical slide on the right side with the couch, adding even more square feet to the home. Just past the living room is Steve’s own putting green and a pro shop, where guests can come in and browse some of his golf gear. Next to the shop is his personal shoe rack and a station for cleaning and polishing his collection of shoes.
Right by the stairs are the full washer and dryer, tucked away in their own closet for when it’s time to take care of a few chores.
The roof lifts 35 feet to reveal a master suite, complete with a queen-size bed and a pop-up tv disguised as a cabinet at the foot of the bed. The TV screen can swivel to face the master bed or the two plush chairs that Steve and his wife often use to read or relax between games.
Finally, the home is completed with a luxurious master bathroom by the bed area.
From leather-upholstered living rooms to walk-in closets to upstairs dance clubs, we can’t say that we aren’t a little jealous of these luxurious buses . With living on these spectacular mobile mansions and simultaneously touring for months at a time year after year, it’s clear that these celebrities know how to work hard and play hard.

I've have gone on several short trips, as well as the Cross Country Trip in September. My sister and I enjoyed the trip tremendously! Our tour guide Gene was an awesome organizer and excellent commander of everything to see and do on this 28 day trip across the country. Gene also provided music and played videos that were a part of our itinerary. And our bus driver Fernando kept us save and on time for all our destinations. We met so many wonderful people on the tour. And the locations were breathtaking. Sedona, Arizona was my favorite. Starr Tours is an amazing company. And the staff who arrange the trip are awesome too.

Thank you for your positive feedback about your recent trip. The photos are fantastic! We hope to see you on another trip again soon!
We took the Starr bus tour to Nashville and Memphis. The included meal deals were very lackluster. One "lunch" was a convenience store where there was absolutely no seating. We could either stand and eat or eat in the bus. Some were using storage boxes for tables in the store. The bus had no seat trays or storage pockets. The tour guide kept playing music selections, blastingly loud, like he was a disc jockey. One morning we returned to our bus seats to find them freshly wet from just-sprayed Febreze. The smell permeated our clothes the whole rest of the day. Why didn't they do that the night before? A lady at the front of our bus was coughing the whole last part of the trip. My wife came down with Covid a few days after we got back. I gave the review 2 stars because Memphis and Nashville were enjoyable, but the means to get there and back - no thank-you. On a bus with NO trays or side pockets, everything we got at rest stopovers had to be balanced on our laps or wedged between us and the fixtures. I was actually so, so glad when we got home.
I have taken several trips with Starr Tours. They hire locals to take you around a day or two to explain the area and history. These people are very knowledgeable and makes an interesting tour. Starr tries to come up with a variety of activities. The 3 to 4 day tours usually include a boat ride a wine tasting and a tour of a house or museum. Their tours are geared for seniors. The only problem I have with Starr is they only allow an hour to see a house or a museum. It's not enough time especially if the house you are touring has a beautiful garden. No time to see both. Since I love gardening as much as history and artecture it has caused a problem - and forget about checking out the gift shop at these places to take stuff home - not enough time. The tour people that accompanied us to and from these trips are not flexible. They stick to the one hour for each activity. Then after rushing out of the home or museum we have blocks of time to do nothing but hang out at our hotel. My suggestion to you is if you book a tour ask how long the stop to each place you are interested in is going to be. They don't put this in their tour book. When I called and complained when I saw a pattern over and over - I was told we can't give you the times of each activity. I said I wasn't asking that. I was asking if you have only a house tour scheduled for the whole day on a tour - how long will you have to explore the house and gardens? Will it be one hour? Because I'm not going to be interested in going. It's a tease.

Mary, thank you for your feedback, I appreciate the positive feedback about our trips. Your comment about staying only 1 hour at attractions is only true in specific instances. Each tour has different timing and that timing depends on the specific attraction or theme of the tour. You may be specifically referred to a recent trip to Newport where we did only stay 1 hour at each mansion in order to accommodate you seeing all 3 mansions. On other trips, we may stay longer. It just depends. In many cases, we are able to tell you timing ahead of time but we must remind travelers that timing does change and is flexible depending on the situation. We welcome you back to travel with us again in the future and we hope to earn a 5-star review next time. Sandy Borowsky, Owner
These guys have the most inconsiderate bus drivers I've ever seen. Three buses stopped by the hotel I was at, and instead of loading in the loading zone, they parked their buses perpendicular to normal car parking and then started pulling bags off and piling them up next to the bus (see photo below, where you can see the first car waiting to get out). This blocked anyone else from being able to get in or out of the hotel for nearly an entire hour. After unloading half of their bags (and no people), they stopped doing anything and just sat there. After the hotel staff talked to them, they drove the buses to a loading area and started unloading people, leaving a bunch of bags blocking about 20-30 cars from being able to get in or out for another half hour. That beats blocking everyone in the hotel, but you have a problem when the best thing you can say is that there was a half hour period where they only blocked 20-30 cars from being able to move.
Bus stops in the middle of throughfare and then unloads luggage into other half of throughfare, blocking entire parking lot for an hour.

Dan, I am sorry that our drivers caused you and others an inconvenience. We will look into this right away and will ensure it won't happen again. Appreciate you telling us what happened.
We booked a trip with Starr Tours for July 2020. The trip is cancelled due to COVID19. Contacted them to get refund-5 of us we're going. They said it might take 3 to 6 months to get money back. I was recently contacted by Starr Tours and all of our money was refunded. Thankful

Thank you for your comment Carolynn and allow me to explain to you (again) why there is a delay. In your case, we have yet to be refunded for the Broadway show tickets we purchased on your behalf. We have been informed it could take many months to receive a refund from Broadway. Additionally, because our business (and the motorcoach industry at large) has been devastated due to the Coronavirus, we don't have the cash to advance you a refund. We are very thankful for everyone's patience while we navigate these unchartered waters (unpaved roads, if you will). We hope you and your family are safe and healthy and we will continue to communicate updates with you about our refund situation.
We just had the most wonderful tour through our nation's history over the last 5 days. Our bus driver, Walt, made the trip extra special. He went above and beyond. I couldn't imagine a better or more memorable experience. Thank you Walt!
Steer clear! Why would you want to do business with a company that doesn't even have the decency to return your calls when you leave messages. More than once! Apparently Lisa's phone does not dial out. There are other companies staffed by courteous people. This is not one of them!
Worst experience in my life . Don't do Starr Tours unless you want a bad experience. They don't care about their customers . They just want their money so they won't cancel the trip if weather is bad .. especially when the trip is to go on a boat !
I took a Starr bus down to Washington DC recently. I was so impressed! The bus was clean and comfortable. The electrical outlets worked. Everything went exactly on schedule. I was so impressed with our driver. He was courteous and safe. But best of all he managed to avoid a lot of traffic, and got us closer to our destination than we were expecting by using some (legal) back roads.

The Cost ...
So, how much will this experience cost you? To begin with, there's what the company calls a "deadhead" charge of $1,200 per day. Those are the travel days it takes the driver to get from StormTrooper's L.A. home base to your doorstep, and then the same days back home.
… Nope, It's Not Cheap
Above and beyond the deadhead fees, travel in any of the company's coaches runs from $1,500 to $2,000 per day, plus $1.50 per mile. There is also a $500 cleaning fee, and clients pick up the cost of the driver's hotel room.

Everything You Need To Know About Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS World Tour Bus
Livies, there’s even a chance to win tickets to the show.
Olivia Rodrigo is taking her GUTS World Tour on the road, and bringing along a ‘90s teenage dream bus with her. Along with a merch truck filled with butterfly totes and tees, Livies HQ announced there will be a GUTS World Tour Bus Experience parked outside the venue at each show for fans to visit.
The GUTS World Tour Bus, similar to the SOUR tour experience , is an Insta-worthy and immersive pop-up with photo ops inspired by Rodrigo’s second album. According to Broadway World , the first 1,000 fans who stop by the purple bus will also get a $10 Starbucks gift card to try the brand’s new lavender drinks .
In addition to freebies and photos, Livies can try out Rodrigo’s limited-edition violet LinkBuds S earbuds from Sony before buying them. If you’re an American Express Card Member, the GUTS World Tour Bus also has exclusive merch, as well as an Olivia Rodrigo x Amex trading card set.
Even if you don’t have tickets to the GUTS tour, you can stop by the bus experience. Admission is free, and fans will have a chance to enter a giveaway that includes tickets to the show. Of course, you have to get there early. Clara Pullam from Arkansas visited the GUTS World Tour Bus Experience before her show in Nashville, Tennessee, and had to wait around two to three hours.
I would recommend you get there earlier.
“I would recommend you get there earlier — about an hour before it opens — because after that, the bus line became pretty crowded,” Pullam tells Elite Daily. Anyone wanting to buy merch and visit the GUTS bus will have to really prep before their show, but Pullam says the experience is so worth it. “The experience was super cool.”
Along with planning when to arrive, here’s everything you need to know about Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS World Tour Bus experience:
The GUTS Bus Has More Than Just Photo Ops
While snapping a pic with the red lip phone like Rodrigo was a highlight for Pullam, she says there’s way more than just photo ops at the GUTS bus. “One of my favorite things from the bus was we got to see her past tour outfits, and I am in love with her Vivienne Westwood look from SOUR ,” she says.
While waiting in line, Pullam also got to send postcards to her friends, and says the bus included photo moments from Rodrigo’s “bad idea right?” music video . Fans will also get to snap pics with a crescent moon that looks like the one Rodrigo rides around on during her set , and a glitter-filled toilet. One of the cutest details are the vintage VHS tapes on the shelf inspired by songs off Rodrigo’s GUTS album, like “Making the Bed” as She’s All That and “All-American B*tch” as Scarface.
It was super amazing to know she experienced what we experienced.
After you go through the bus and purchase merch, you also have the opportunity to bedazzle it at a styling station . Turn your tee into something retro chic if “pretty isn’t pretty enough” for you. The best part of all is that Rodrigo has gone through the bus as well. Pullam says, “It was super amazing to know she experienced what we experienced,” and you can even take your pics just like your fave homeschooled girl.
The GUTS Tour Bus Is Making Stops Along The U.S.
The GUTS bus made its first stop at Rodrigo’s show in Charlotte, North Carolina on March 8, and has followed along with the tour since. While Rodrigo’s site doesn’t list exactly where the GUTS experience will be, the bus is expected to appear at tour venues and local points of interest as she makes her way across the U.S.
You can also check out your tour stop’s page to find out bus information or follow her official fan account Livies HQ on Instagram.

Vastly cheaper alternative to a st. paul streetcar emerges. it's a bus..
Six years after Ramsey County leaders endorsed a streetcar for W. 7th Street in St. Paul, a new idea for public transit along the busy corridor has emerged: a bus line that is more than a billion dollars cheaper to build.
County transit planners last month released details for arterial bus-rapid transit (aBRT) service that would cost at least $121 million and connect downtown St. Paul with Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and the Mall of America.
The so-called Riverview Corridor would join a growing stable of aBRT routes throughout the metro, a popular service that features heated and well-lit stations, payment-before-boarding, and 10-minute service during peak hours.
But some are still championing a streetcar, despite a $2.1 billion price tag and a complicated route to the Bloomington megamall that calls for a new bridge over the Mississippi River and a new station at Fort Snelling, sacred space for Indigenous tribes.
This summer, Ramsey County will gauge public opinion on the matter through a series of open houses and other outreach efforts. Come fall, a key advisory committee will make a recommendation.
"The public will really need to chew on these options," said Russ Stark, St. Paul's chief resilience officer, who serves on the project's Policy Advisory Committee. "We expect a wide variety of opinions."
Enter arterial BRT
In 2018, the Ramsey County Board voted unanimously to support streetcar service along the Riverview Corridor. More compact than light rail, this type of streetcar would run mostly in a dedicated lane. If built, it would signal a return of streetcar service to the Twin Cities for the first time since 1954.
In recent weeks, transit planners have offered more details about aBRT service using electric buses in the Riverview corridor, an option they say was always under consideration.
With three aBRT lines currently running, several under construction, and more planned, Metro Transit has bet big on this mode of transport. The A Line debuted in 2016, connecting Rosedale mall with the Blue Line's 46th Street station in Minneapolis, largely along Snelling Avenue in St. Paul.
Arterial bus-rapid transit runs in traffic, so it's susceptible to back-ups, although buses have signal priority at intersections. While an improvement over workaday local bus service, transit planners say it doesn't have the same sway with real estate developers as light rail, or perhaps a streetcar, who may be intent on building apartments or retail.
Replacing the corridor's Route 54 bus with a streetcar will be challenging, according to county presentations released in recent weeks.
The Riverview route begins in downtown St. Paul and features many local streets zig-zagging with W. 7th, and a narrow stretch of bars and restaurants near Xcel Energy Center that is often crowded with revelers on event days.
Then there's the effect of construction on businesses, as well as the challenges associated with the Hwy. 5 bridge; a pathway through Fort Snelling, a national landmark; plus shared track with the Blue Line light rail leading to MSP airport and a new elevated station at the Mall of America. And, being St. Paul, there's a contingent worried about the loss of trees, no matter what's built.
"We are trying to get good transit to fit in with the existing community and make places as attractive as we can for people to live, work and spend time," Stark said.
Leaders will also have to justify a $2 billion streetcar project in light of the nearly $3 billion Southwest light-rail project with its cost overruns and delays, not to mention the struggle with crime aboard Metro Transit trains and buses.
"No doubt they all have negative impact," said Rafael Ortega, the Ramsey County commissioner who is championing the streetcar project. "We are constantly anticipating and updating [plans.] We feel good about our project financially," he said of lessons learned from Southwest. "We're making sure we get the best value for our dollar."
"All of these things will work themselves out," Ortega said.
Streetcar slower than bus
The county has suggested two streetcar options: The main difference is one features additional stations at Smith and Jefferson avenues in St. Paul. The first option uses a dedicated lane for about 10 miles, the second, for 8 miles.
End-to-end streetcar travel times vary from 43 to 45 minutes – about five minutes slower than aBRT and three minutes slower than the Route 54. The bus routes are slightly different. For example, the streetcar would drop passengers off at both MSP airport terminals, but the aBRT bus proposal would only serve Terminal 1.
Average weekday ridership for the streetcar is expected to reach between 11,200 and 11,600 by 2040, and 8,000 on aBRT. But transit planners say the estimates will be retooled after the Metropolitan Council updates its post-pandemic ridership models. (The council has not been involved in planning Riverview.)
"Travel patterns have changed [post pandemic], but [the route] actually lends itself really well to a streetcar which is very frequent, all-day short trips," said Jennifer Jordan, Ramsey County's senior transportation planner for the project. "So we expect when we rerun the ridership model we'll see that start to stand out."
Both the streetcar and aBRT option would provide service every 10 minutes from early morning into the evening, and every half hour beyond that.
The Hwy. 5 bridge spanning the Mississippi River would have to be replaced to accommodate the streetcar, a project Ortega said could cost around $500 million, while aBRT would use the existing bridge, which underwent a $14 million reconstruction in 2016.
W. 7th Street would be resurfaced to accommodate the streetcar, work that is baked into the overall cost. The bus option would require a $200 million street overhaul, not included in the current price tag.
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is expected to pay about half of the cost of the streetcar project, with Ramsey and Hennepin counties paying the rest. The bus would be funded mostly with state and local money. To date, the county has spent $11.7 million on the Riverview Corridor project.
Ortega said choosing a streetcar will have the side benefit of a new Hwy. 5 bridge and a redo of W. 7th. "This is an opportunity to get the federal government to pay half the cost, otherwise it will be borne by local government," he said.
And then there's parking
Parking before and after streetcar construction is a hot issue for Riverview, especially along W. 7th. The first streetcar proposal leaves just 35 parking spots along the stretch, while the second would preserve 400 spaces. For aBRT, 570 parking spots would remain, a loss of about 70 spaces.
To W. 7th resident Joe Landsberger, who serves on several Riverview committees, eliminating parking for a streetcar is lunacy.
"You lose customers and diminish traffic; they're out to destroy a very vital business district," he said. "There aren't many empty storefronts along W. 7th like Grand Avenue, where East Coast pension funds own the buildings. These are locally owned businesses."
Transportation reporter Janet Moore covers trains, planes, automobiles, buses, bikes and pedestrians. Moore has been with the Star Tribune for 21 years, previously covering business news, including the retail, medical device and commercial real estate industries.
