Why you can’t miss the nature wonderland that is “the Prom”

It may be one of the most beautiful spots in the country, but this spot is relatively unknown. That is, until now, with an award-winning wilderness tour company giving travellers a first look.

This 16-minute tour left me spellbound

This 16-minute tour left me spellbound

Dressed in long red spray jackets down to our ankles, our two boatloads of 28 people are making quite the entrance as we walk along the soft Tidal River sand to hop on custom-built amphibious 10-tonne boats.

We’re heading out into the unspoilt Bass Coast ocean from southeastern Victoria’s Wilsons Promontory National Park , known to locals as “the Prom”.

Beachgoers stare, then rush to take selfies with us in the boat as we slowly enter the water, prop up the wheels and drift by families on boogie boards and 350-million-year-old granite rocks, raced by a black-faced cormorant to reach a group of spirited seals.

It’s part of award-winning Pennicott Wilderness Journeys ’ latest yellow boat ocean encounter and its first venture in Victoria. This trip was 11 years in the planning by founder Robert Pennicott, who had always found the Prom “very spiritual”. He had looked at other locations to extend his award-winning eco-tourism business outside of Tasmania, and settled on here, even though it was the hardest option.

20 BEST BEACHES IN VICTORIA

BES FAMILY SHORT BREAKS IN VIC

“I can’t do anything unless my heart really believes in it,” Pennicott has said. But, with the Victoria-Tasmania border running within 45km of the southern tip of Wilsons Promontory, he doesn’t have far to go if he feels homesick.

“I’ve been around here all my life,” says our skipper Dave, as we watch dolphins play in the boat’s wake. “There’s a really good energy at the Prom, you can feel it – it’s my happy place.”

The Wilson's Promontory boat trip. Picture: Pennicott Wilderness Journeys

The humpback whales are also here, as we round South Point, the southernmost tip of mainland Australia. We keep a respectful distance and watch in awe as colossal shiny black backs lift out of the water. We pull out our cameras to capture a whale tail as it claps on the water.

“They can hold their breath for 45 minutes, so don’t hold yours waiting for a photo,” says Sam, our guide, but no one lowers their cameras. “Each whale’s tail is like a fingerprint, totally unique,” she adds, as we wait. Once we’ve all captured enough blurry tails in the distance, we head over to a rocky island overflowing with Australian fur seals. “You can smell them before you see them,” Dave says. “Deep breaths everyone!”

VICTORIA’S 20 BEST SHORT BREAKS

ONE THING YOU’RE GETTING WRONG ON PHILLIP ISLAND

You can hear them, too. There’s one rock covered with seal pups pining for their mothers, and another with salty old seals barking at us.

“It’s easy to forget they were almost hunted to extinction,” Dave says. “Now they are protected and thriving.” The seals swim towards the boat, staring up at us like curious ghosts. Every now and then something spooks them and they all scuttle under the water at once.

“They stay close to the rocks in case of sharks,” Dave explains.

The locals.

Next stop is Skull Rock, an impressive formation and so big it could fit the Sydney Opera House inside its cavernous hole. It’s mysterious, too – only nine landings have ever happened here (less than on the moon).

On the way back, we are shown a nest on top of a granite boulder with a white-bellied sea eagle keeping watch.

The nutrient-rich waters have created a smorgasbord for the coastal wildlife here, so you won’t leave a cruise without seeing something special.

It’s also good to know the company’s eco-credentials mean the cruise leaves not much more than some tracks on the sand, and only until the next high tide takes them away.

Back at the beach, my daughter Georgie and I wade across the mouth of Tidal River to sit on the granite rocks for a picnic lunch of salad sandwiches and slices from Pandesal Bakery , their soft sourdough taking up to 36 hours to ferment.

At Ross Farm in Meeniyan, our accommodation for the night, we’re shown around three disused farm buildings turned into elegant accommodation by the town’s former vet, Lindsay, and his interior designer daughter, Andrea.

Our barn accommodation is a mix of rustic interiors, with minimalist Japanese and Scandi interior styling and handcrafted feel, such as a rusted steel spiral staircase. Pink granite in the bathroom and kitchen are the owners’ nod to the distinctive granite rocks at the Prom.

In the morning, we soak in the wooden tub with views across treetops and the rolling Gippsland farmland. After breakfast, including eggs and fresh herbs from the farm, we wander down charming country lanes.

Giant Skull Rock Picture: Pennicott Wilderness Journeys

It’s so quiet in the countryside and as the wildlife we saw on the cruise know, a little migration out of your normal environment now and then can only do you good.

HOW TO GET TO WILSON’S PROMONTORY

The Pennicott Wilderness Journeys Wilson’s Promontory cruise leaves from Tidal River, just over three hours from Melbourne. The cruise takes 2.5 hours and runs at 11am (all year) and 2pm (15 Dec 2019 – 31 March 2020). Adults cost $135, children $85 (up to 16 years inclusive), and families cost $430 (2 adults and 3 children).

WHERE TO STAY IN MEENIYAN NEAR WILSON’S PROM

Ross Farm in Meeniyan can be booked separately (1-bedroom cabin, 2-bedroom barn or 3-bedroom dairy) or all three together (sleeping 12). It’s two hours from Melbourne and an hour from Tidal River.

WHERE TO EAT ON THE WAY TO WILSON’S PROM

Stop for hearty country fare at Olive at Loch cafe on the way from Melbourne. The Meeniyan Pantry & Cellar has platters filled with local hams and cheeses, or sit in the gardens at Koonawarra Store for a special brunch. Stop in at Gurney’s Cidery in Foster, taking in views across the orchard and coastline. At night, head to Trulli Pizzeria for authentic Italian woodfired pizza. If you can fit more food in on the way out of town, stop at the Borough Department Store for buckwheat sponge, toasties and tea in vintage cups.

If you haven’t eaten these five foods, you’re doing Australian summer all wrong.

A regional bakery has claimed bragging rights as the makers of the best vanilla slice and hot cross bun in Australia.

You might have seen the Great Ocean Road before - but nothing compares with this way to see it.

This Great Ocean Road town is more than a pitstop

This Great Ocean Road town is more than a pitstop

It may be a pitstop on one of Australia's best scenic drives, but Apollo Bay is worth the trip alone.

Sam and H were our captain/tour guide and they were fantastic. The scenery is spectacular. The wildlife, including seals was incredible. But the obvious highlight was seeing a pod of nine orcas frolicking in the ocean. Our captain changed up the tour so we got to spend a good 40 minutes following these magnificent creatures. It almost topped skull rock, almost. It is a must do. Oh and my daughter who is very prone to sea sickness was absolutely fine. Read more Written 16 January 2024

Leaving from Pt Welshpool in the morning mist, the sun came out on and off and we had a varied appreciation of this spectacular coast with its sandy beaches, magnificent rocks and majestic hills. The crew was friendly and particularly well organised. WE enjoyed multiple coffees and biscuits, morning and afternoon tea. The lunch was very well presented in individual little boxes with bamboo cutlery , plentiful and tasty. It as great having a warm potato as we admired the scenery on the top deck .
