LIONS TOUR TO AUSTRALIA 2025

It was their first series win since 1997 and went to the deciding Test match in Sydney in front of the one of the biggest British & Irish Lions crowds ever.

The Tour to Australia in 2013 was a memorable journey across one of the most beautiful countries in the world and was a crowning glory for head coach Warren Gatland.

This was the Lions’ first Tour to Australia since 2001 and under the captaincy of Sam Warburton, they got off to a winning start in Brisbane. George North scored one of the greatest Lions Test tries of all time in a nervy victory in front of thousands of Lions fans.

Ahead of the second Test in Melbourne, Australia was awash with red as fans soaked up the delights of the Whitsunday Islands, Cairns, the Gold Coast, Uluru and much more. The Wallabies ground their way to victory to level the series and take four years of work down to the final 80 minutes in Sydney.

But roared on by a monstrous Sea of Red in the third Test, the Lions soared to one of their most comprehensive Test wins ever, dismantling Australia 41-16 to set the seal on the series.  Click here to secure early access for Australia 2025 .

Lions tours are lucrative business - the tour of New Zealand in 2017 made a total profit of £27m.

British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa may not take place next year

  • Jurie Roux casts doubt on next summer’s tour due to Covid
  • No spectators would not be ‘commercially viable’

The British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa may not take place next year if supporters are not allowed to attend because of Covid-19 restrictions, with the host union’s chief executive, Jurie Roux, admitting having no spectators would not be “commercially viable”.

Roux also said that postponing the tour to next autumn was “highly unlikely” because of the already cluttered nature of the global calendar, raising the prospect of a delay until 2022 at the earliest, or even cancelling it entirely. If the current travel restrictions imposed on South Africa were in place next summer, Lions supporters would not be able to travel.

Roux is optimistic that the situation will have improved by next July but issued a stark warning if it does not.

Lions tours have traditionally been hugely lucrative for the host country – the 2017 tour ensured a profit of around £20m for New Zealand Rugby – while the Lions made £7m. A new business model, with more evenly split revenues, has been introduced for next year’s tour and just last month Vodafone was unveiled as the Lions’ main sponsor in a deal worth upwards of £6m. With mechanisms in place for supporters who had bought tickets for a refund, if the tour does not take place next year it could be hugely damaging to the finances of both South Africa and the home nations.

“No spectators and an inability for people to travel would commercially not make this viable and there would be a serious reconsideration on how we then continue in terms of the tour,” said Roux, when announcing South Africa’s ticket pricing strategy for the tour on Tuesday. “We are assessing that on a weekly and monthly basis.”

Earlier this summer discussions over potentially moving the tour to October to align with a new global calendar took place but ultimately it was decided that it would remain in its usual summer slot, with the Lions confirming the original dates of the eight-match tour last month. With the French and English clubs rejecting proposals to permanently move the summer Test window to the autumn, however, Roux does not envisage delaying next year’s tour to October and November.

“Moving the dates of the tour to a later stage next year – given the decisions around the global calendar – would be unlikely,” he added. ‘It would probably mess with PRL, Pro14 and a few other dates, which would make it highly unlikely.”

The Lions also remain optimistic the tour goes ahead as planned with an estimated 20,000 supporters making the trip. “As recently announced, we are fully intending for the tour to go ahead as scheduled, but, as you would expect, SA Rugby, in conjunction with the Lions, are contingency planning for all eventualities,” said a Lions spokesperson.

Chicago Bears

Chicago bears | what to know about the chicago bears’ possible move from soldier field — and which other suburbs are vying for the stadium.

A map shows the Chicago Bears' preliminary plans for the Arlington Park property, including a so-called Stadium District on the northwest side of the property abutting Route 53 and Northwest Highway, along with mixed-use development in the rest of the footprint, including where the shuttered racetrack now stands.

The Chicago Bears embarked on a new era in February 2023 with the purchase of a site in Arlington Heights where the team hopes to build a new enclosed stadium with a massive entertainment and residential development.

But the team has hit a financial roadblock in their proposed move to Arlington Heights, and now other municipalities have been vying in a sort of roulette to attract — or in Chicago’s case, keep — the team.

Naperville, Rockford, Chicago and, most recently, Waukegan and Aurora have placed themselves in the running to land the white whale of the NFL — though some officials concede the team may be using them for leverage in negotiations with Arlington Heights.

Here’s what to know about the possible move from Soldier Field.

What’s new — and where do things stand?

Arlington Heights village officials have proposed a compromise over the Bears’ property tax for the site of a potential domed stadium in the suburb that would significantly cut the team’s tax bill. The village proposed an agreement to accept the Cook County Board of Review’s assessed value of $124.7 million for the 2023 and 2024 tax years.

The property would be assessed at the 25% commercial rate for half of 2023 and the 10% vacant property rate for the other half, resulting in a total tax liability of $6.3 million, according to Arlington Heights’ Feb. 27 proposal, which the village released publicly late Monday after an open records request by the Tribune.

The news comes after the Bears said on March 11 that they were prepared to provide $2 billion in private funding for a new publicly owned enclosed stadium and park space in the city.

The lakefront site would replace Soldier Field and increase open space on the museum campus by 20%, and provide a prime location to host the Super Bowl, NCAA Final Four and year-round community events, a source familiar with the deal said. But questions — and possible opposition — were immediate.

A poll showed that 80% of Chicagoans support a museum campus location, and 77% want to keep the team in the city, the source said. The poll of 500 registered voters by McGuire Research also found 60% of Chicagoans support using public money for a publicly owned stadium.

If not Chicago, then where? Breaking down the growing list of stadium options.

The Bears have quickly had two meetings with city officials, after Naperville Mayor Scott Wehrli wrote to invite the team to talk. The mayor said he’s had very preliminary discussions with Bears President and CEO Kevin Warren.

Wehrli has said he wants to develop underused properties along the Interstate 88 tollway, where the former BP Amoco site would be more than big enough at 187 acres.

  • Naperville mayor defends meeting with Bears about stadium, stressing protocols will be followed if proposal is made

Waukegan Mayor Ann Taylor wrote a letter Monday to Warren, proposing that the Bears build a new stadium on lakefront property .

Several locations Taylor cited have the space for a stadium and entertainment area with access to Interstate 94, U.S. Route 41 and public transportation. The Bears already train in Lake Forest, 9 miles south of Waukegan.

  • Waukegan has vacant lakefront land available for potential Bears stadium

Mayor Richard Irvin has invited the Bears to consider relocating to the suburb.

In a letter from Irvin to the Bears , he touts Aurora’s history, location and track record of getting developments done. The letter comes on the heels of President/CEO Kevin Warren saying recently that the Bears are “in a position to start exploring other places and opportunities and no longer considers Arlington Heights as a singular focus.”

State Rep. Dave Vella, a Democrat from Rockford, told the Tribune he’d like his city to have a chance at bringing the Bears there.

While acknowledging that Rockford is 90 miles from Chicago, he touted Rockford’s transportation development and how that could be used at Bears fans’ convenience.

Richton Park

In a letter to Bears President and CEO Kevin Warren, Richton Park Mayor Rick Reinbold touted large expanses of available land and the south suburb’s proximity to highways and the Metra Electric Line.

“I understand how the complexity of completing a stadium deal at the former Arlington Park site can be frustrating,” Reinbold told Warren in the July 21 letter. “Allow me to interest you in greenfield opportunities awaiting the Bears in Richton Park!”

Country Club Hills

Cook County Commissioner Monica Gordon is encouraging the football team to consider Country Club Hills, throwing what her office described as a “Hail Mary pass” to encourage the team to consider the south suburb.

Gordon said in a news release she and Country Club Hills Mayor James Ford “are imploring the team to look at the south suburbs as an opportunity to have a positive economic impact on a part of the Chicagoland area that is ignored all too often.” “We’re taking our shot in the dark here,” Ford said.

Arlington Heights

The main difference between Arlington Heights and the other sites, of course, is that the Bears own property there — and demolition has begun . The site is big enough for a stadium and a huge proposed housing and entertainment complex. It has a Metra train station and is next to Route 53, not far from the I-90 tollway.

  • Kevin Warren says Bears seek ‘legitimate partner’ in picking site for new stadium. Would that be Arlington Heights? Maybe.
  • Newly seated Arlington Heights trustees get rundown on Bears plans to move to Arlington Heights: ‘We’ve still got a long, long way to go’
  • Some Arlington Heights residents decry lack of input in possible stadium move: ‘Bears should stay in Chicago where they belong’
  • Bears’ plans for stadium in Arlington Heights excite many suburbanites. But with funding a big issue, economists caution about subsidies.

Mayor Brandon Johnson said he wanted to keep the team in the city and met with Warren about what they called their shared commitment to the city.

Johnson didn’t offer any specifics, but the mayor said it’s important to have conversations to keep the Bears “shuffling” in Chicago, a reference to the team’s only Super Bowl win, in 1986.

What would happen to Soldier Field without the Bears?

The divorce is far from a foregone conclusion — the Bears have simply taken the next step, one they’ve been telegraphing for over a year.

If the team leaves Soldier Field, Friends of the Parks Executive Director Juanita Irizarry said she hopes the stadium can host many more concerts each year, easing the increasingly controversial burden on neighborhood parks for big musical events such as Riot Fest in Douglass Park and the recently announced Re:SET festival in Riis Park. What’s the history of the team in Chicago?

While the Bears have called Soldier Field home since 1971, the team has discussed or proposed playing its games elsewhere throughout much of the last 50 years.

Wrigley Field served as the original home venue for the team when it moved to Chicago in 1921 and remained there through 1970. The team won nearly 70% of its home games during that span.

But the Bears were forced to find a new home after the American Football League merged with the National Football League and required stadiums to seat at least 50,000 fans. The team played its last game at Wrigley Field on Dec. 13, 1970, beating the Packers 35-17. Read more here .

Why Arlington Heights?

Arlington Park International Racecourse on Oct. 6, 2021, in Arlington Heights. The Chicago Bears have signed a purchase agreement for Arlington International Racecourse, the near-century-old facility that likely hosted its final horse race.

If the Bears dare to dream big about a new stadium in Arlington Heights, they can find inspiration in SoFi Stadium, the new star attraction of the NFL.

The league’s largest and most expensive arena and the site of the Super Bowl, SoFi, just outside Los Angeles, is overwhelming fans with its sweeping curves and epic scale. The stadium and its development highlight certain parallels to the Bears’ proposal to buy and redevelop Arlington International Racecourse. Both reflect desires to leave century-old stadiums and home cities for vast sites that allow for planned enclaves of surrounding restaurants, hotels, offices, stores and homes. Read more here .

What are fans saying?

Fans settle into their seats prior to the start of a game between the Bears and Lions at Soldier Field on Oct. 3, 2021.

Some fans expressed a draft day-like optimism that better days are ahead. They dreamed openly of shorter concessions, easier parking, better tailgating opportunities and a domed stadium that protected them from biting winter winds.

“I’ve been to multiple stadiums in the NFL and Soldier Field does not compete with any of them,” Bears season ticket holder Neal Shah of Wheaton said. “On game days, the television crews show an aerial view of the stadium, which is beautiful, but the logistics are terrible.” Read more here .

  • At tailgates outside Soldier Field, the Bears’ possible departure is a burning issue: ‘Arlington Heights, if they move, here I come’
  • Would travel to a Bears stadium in Arlington Heights be better or worse than Soldier Field? It depends on how you get there, fans say.

DETROIT (AP) — With the franchise coming off its best season in 32 years, the Detroit Lions have extended the contracts of coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes through the 2027 season.

“They have been the driving force behind the rebuild of our football team and the success that we have enjoyed,” Lions principal owner and chair Sheila Hamp said. "The continuity they provide for our football program will continue to be the key to our future success on the field.”

The club also announced a a multi-year extension with special assistant to the President/CEO and chairperson Chris Spielman.

Holmes joined the Lions prior to the start of the 2021 season and has been credited with rebuilding the Lions roster through a vision for sustained success. He drafted well, taking lineman Penei Sewell (2021), receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (2021), defensive lineman Aidan Hutchinson (2022), receiver Jameson Williams (2022), tight end Jack Campbell (2023), tight end Sam LaPorta (2023, 34th overall) and safety Brian Branch (2023).

Holmes joined the Lions from the Los Angeles Rams, where he climbed the ranks to director of college scouting over his 18 years with the club. He was named PFWA NFL Executive of the Year in 2023 for building the Lions roster that recorded a 12-5 record on their way to the 2023 NFC Championship game.

Campbell joined the Lions six days after Holmes and has partnered with him to create a winning program in Detroit. In his first full-time head coaching stint, Campbell has compiled a 24-26-1 record. The former tight end has led a significant turnaround in Detroit, from a 3-13-1 record in his first season to a 12-5 record in 2023.

Detroit Lions have 7 picks in 2024 NFL draft. Here is the order

By DeJanay Booth-Singleton

Updated on: March 11, 2024 / 7:52 PM EDT / CBS Detroit

(CBS DETROIT) - The Detroit Lions is gearing up for its picks for the 2024 NFL draft  next month.

According to a press release, the team currently has seven draft picks, one of which was received from Minnesota after the T.J. Hockenson trade.

The Lions do not have a pick in the fourth round as part of the trade, but they own their own picks in the first three rounds and rounds five through seven.

The 2024 NFL Draft  will be held in Detroit  from April 25-27.

Detroit Lions 2024 NFL draft picks order

  • Round 1: Pick 29
  • Round 2: Pick 29 (No. 61)
  • Round 3: Pick 9 (No. 73) from the Vikings
  • Round 3: Pick 29 (No. 92)
  • Round 5: Pick 29 (No. 163)
  • Round 6: Pick 29 (No. 204)
  • Round 7: Pick 29 (No. 249)

How are draft picks decided?

According to the NFL, each of the 32 teams is given a pick for every round. The picks are given based on success from the most recent season, starting with the team with the worst record.

The  first 32 picks  are based on whether the team made it to the playoffs.

Teams that didn't advance are given overall pick Nos. 1 through 20. The teams that went on to the playoffs will get overall picks 21-32, based on where they finished in the playoffs.

The two teams that lost in the conference championship round will get picks 29 and 30. Thus, the Lions received the No. 29 pick because they lost in the NFC Championship.

Some teams may also receive a compensatory pick, which goes to teams that lost free agents. This year, the Lions did not receive a compensatory pick.

What's different from last year's picks?

Because the Lions ended with a better record in the 2023 season (12-5 record) compared to the 2022 season (9-8 record), the team's first pick is No. 29 overall, compared to having a 12th pick last year.

Also different this year is the number of picks each round, largely due to trades. The Lions had two picks in the first, second, and third rounds in 2023. However, in 2024, the third round is the team's only round where they have at least two (thanks to the trade with Minnesota).

The team also didn't have a pick in the sixth round last year, whereas it has one this year.

Despite the current seven picks, changes can happen, even on the night of the draft. In the middle of the third round last year, the Lions traded pick Nos. 122, 139, 168 for the 96th pick overall to select Western Kentucky defensive tackle Brodric Martin.

Lions extend Brad Holmes, Dan Campbell through 2027

The Lions’ turnaround has been one of the league’s clear success stories over the last few years.

Now the team has rewarded those leading the charge.

Detroit announced on Thursday that General Manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell have each agreed to a contract extension that will keep them with the Lions through 2027.

“We are thrilled to have Brad and Dan under contract for the next four seasons,” Lions owner Sheila Hamp said in a statement released by the team. “They have been the driving force behind the rebuild of our football team and the success that we have enjoyed. The continuity they provide for our football program will continue to be the key to our future success on the field.”

Holmes and Campbell were both hired in 2021 and have compiled a 24-26-1 record in their three seasons together. While the team was 3-13-1 in Year 1, the Lions improved to 9-8 in 2022. Then the team met the higher expectations in 2023 by finishing 12-5 to win the NFC North.

The Lions then defeated the Rams and Buccaneers in the postseason before losing to the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game.

Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, Campbell had three years left on his contract but has received a new four-year deal — which likely means Campbell received a significant raise.

Detroit also noted that special assistant to the president/CEO and chairperson Chris Spielman has received a multi-year extension.

“I could not be more proud of the work that Brad, Dan, and Chris have done for our organization,” Lions president and CEO Rod Wood said in a statement. “They have selflessly worked together to build a winning culture within the Lions. I am excited to continue working with them to create the sustained success that we envision for the team, our fans, and the city of Detroit.”

Now that the Lions have tasted success, their next job is to sustain and exceed it. We’ll see if the team can defend its NFC North title in 2024 with what should be a competitive division.
