ABOUT US - THE BEST CAMEL RIDES BROOME

Part of putting broome on the map.

Steve Madden, owner of Cable Beach Camels was one of the ORIGINAL operators of Camel Tours in Broome on Cable beach. Establishing his camel tour business in 1991, which operated under Steve’s ownership until 2000, Steve’s business flourished and gained international popularity, known as one of the icons of Broome.   This was instrumental to putting Broome on the map as a destination.  Steve sold the business at the end of 2000.  Now back at Broome once more, you can take a camel tour on Cable Beach with one of the original operators in guided camel tours. Choose yellow for the best camel tour in Broome.

Over 25 years of Camel Tourism!

Whether it be local or overseas tourism projects, breeding or racing, the animals are carefully selected according to their temperament, body type and age and are trained to suit their purpose.  With our knowledge of these remarkable animals your camel tour on magnificent Cable Beach will be one to be remembered.

Save Your Money!

Bring your own camera and we will take amazing photos for you. Our camels are an interesting mix because they have come from four different regions. As a result they are all quite different looking from each other in colour and physical characteristics. Some are a typical camel colour resembling a Dunn or fawn colour, others a very dark grey, while others are a very dark chocolate to almost black.

This interesting variety of colours really stands out in contrast against their gold saddle blankets with black saddles and halters.  Through the Camera lens, especially at Sunset they are extremely photogenic, camel tour in Broome are A PHOTOGRAPHERS DREAM.

Cable Beach Camels in Broome

[email protected], or phone  0477 774 297, faq’s, how do i get on and off the camel.

As part of our commitment and compliance to safe work practices, our policy is to give careful safety instructions to all patrons prior to commencement of our tour.  For example you will be shown the correct manner of mounting and dismounting the camel prior to being seated – we have people on both sides of the camel to assist you.  Mounting and dismounting occurs when the camel is kneeling at the beginning and end of your ride (you won’t need a ladder!)

Why is there a weight limit of 90kgs per person?

Camels, whilst powerful animals, work most days on the beach.  As part of our commitment to the ongoing optimal health and safety of our animals we have introduced the weight limit of 90kg per person.  This limit is well within their lifting capacity, thus keeping their backs strain free, comfortable and happy; as a result we are very strict on this weight limit and we thank you in advance for your appreciation of our caring for our animals.

Do camels carry water in their hump?

No they do not.  The hump is usually full of fat; whilst there is a bit of fluid mixed within the fat, the size of a camel’s hump is a reflection of the camel’s condition – the bigger the hump the fatter the camel.

Do camels spit?

As a rule camels generally do not spit.  Generally this would only occur if antagonised, or feeling some degree of discomfort or stress.  Some camels make a noise when they begin to stand up from the kneeling position due to the exertion of lifting; if chewing their cud at this time some contents may fall out of their mouth (they sometimes ‘talk with their mouth full’ when they get up).

Discover a unique perspective of Broome’s Cable Beach with the Pre-Sunset Camel Tour by Sundowner Camel Tours.

Sundowner Camel Tours is easily identifiable by its distinctive yellow saddle mats with red trimming.

The venture is led by Steve Madden, a pioneer in the camel tour industry in Broome. Steve was one of the first camel tour operators on Cable Beach back in the ’90s, and his passion for these remarkable creatures is palpable. He and his team are eager to share their wealth of knowledge about the character, physiology, and nature of camels, turning your tour into an engaging and enlightening journey.

Camels in Broome: Information and Facts

When it comes to iconic Australian fauna, the kangaroo, koala, or wombat might spring to mind first. However, one of the country’s most fascinating creatures originally hails from faraway lands, the camel.

In the sun-soaked town of Broome, camels have become an integral part of the landscape, offering locals and tourists alike a unique way to explore the stunning coastline. But why are there camels in Broome and what’s special about these creatures?

🐪 Camels in Australia are primarily of two types: the one-humped Dromedary Camels and the two-humped Bactrian Camels. The camels that roam the sands of Broome are Dromedaries. Easily identifiable by their single hump, Dromedaries are known for their incredible adaptability to arid conditions.

🐪 Their distinctive hump, contrary to common belief, doesn’t store water. Instead, it’s a reservoir of fatty tissue, providing energy when food sources are scarce. The hump also serves another crucial purpose – it helps to insulate the rest of the body from heat, allowing the camel to stay cool in hot climates.

🐪 One of the unique characteristics of camels is their gait, a result of their legs’ unusual motion. Unlike most four-legged animals, camels move both legs on one side of their body at the same time, creating a swaying motion that’s earned them the nickname “ships of the desert”.

Why are there camels in Broome, Western Australia?

In the 19th century, camels were transported from India and Afghanistan to Australia to assist with transport and labour. The responsibility of tending these camels fell to Muslim cameleers, who were brought over specifically for this purpose.

They played a vital role in servicing the South Australian outback and eventually started their own businesses, importing and managing camel caravans. Historians estimate that during this period, around 15,000 camels found their way to Australia. The camel handlers, commonly referred to as Afghans or Ghans, also left their mark, lending their nickname to Australia’s famous train, The Ghan.

With the advent of motorised vehicles, camels’ roles significantly diminished, leading to many being released into the wilderness. In these untamed lands, camels flourished, and today, Australia is home to the largest population of wild camels in the world.

However, this population surge hasn’t come without issues. In remote communities, camels wreak havoc by damaging fences, pipes and draining waterholes. Between 2009 and 2013, the Australian government initiated a culling program, resulting in the loss of about 160,000 camels.

Interestingly, the camel ride businesses in Broome can be viewed as a lifeline for these camels. I personally hold reservations towards animal tourism that leads to the animals’ suffering. Yet, these camels are well-cared for – they are well-fed, properly hydrated, carry weight within limits, and work only a couple of times per day.

So, one could argue that these businesses are in fact providing these camels with a sanctuary, shielding them from a possible grim fate in the wild.

Where can you ride camels in Broome?

Cable Beach, with its tranquil scenery, is the one and only location in Broome for camel rides. All tour operators meet guests on this stunning shoreline, making it the ideal backdrop for a unique and unforgettable adventure.

Broome Camel Rides Weight Limit

In Broome, the welfare of camels is a priority. Therefore, there are certain weight limitations for camel rides to ensure the animals’ well-being.

Both Sundowner Camels and Broome Camel Safari enforce a maximum weight limit of 90kg per individual, whereas Red Sun allows a slightly higher limit of 100kg per adult.

For children, the weight restriction is kept at 60kg. Moreover, for couples riding together, the combined weight cannot exceed 170kg. These measures are put in place to protect the health and comfort of these majestic creatures.

What is the best time of day to ride camels in Broome?

A camel ride against the backdrop of a sunset at Cable Beach is the quintessential Broome imagery most travellers have come to expect. And for a good reason – the dazzling display of oranges, pinks, and purples lighting up the sky is genuinely spectacular, making Broome sunset camel rides a hot ticket, often fully booked weeks in advance.

A sunset tour immerses you in the stunning spectacle of a Western Australian sunset, a vibrant feast for the eyes, and you’ll be sure to come away with incredible photos!

That being said, don’t rush to rule out a morning tour. Opting for a sunrise camel ride lets you sidestep the afternoon heat and bustling crowds.

Those seeking a last-minute booking will likely find the morning tours more accommodating. The experience is undeniably calmer, offering you a serene journey on the 22-kilometre stretch of Cable Beach. Rest assured, the early morning vistas are equally insta-worthy.

The morning sunrise camel tours in Broome are generally more budget-friendly!

What to Expect on a Broome Camel Ride?

Embarking on a camel ride in Broome is a delightful adventure that guarantees some hearty laughter and engaging encounters.

Camels have this stereotype of being a touch grouchy, but the ones here in Broome are chill, and happy to amble along with us, the random tourists. Don’t be surprised if you spot a camel-in-training in your convoy. That’s right, even camels have a rookie phase!

While these rookies occasionally test the waters with a quick detour, there’s no need for alarm. It happened in my group and created a momentary stir, but the ever-vigilant tour staff had things back in order in no time. The camels follow a strict single file, flanked by attentive guides at the front, middle, and back, ensuring any bumps in the ride are quickly smoothed over.

For the welfare of the camels, your weight will be asked before the ride. The operators are mindful of not overburdening the animals and have set weight limits.

As for getting on and off the camel, no longer do you have to grapple with the awkward manoeuvre of climbing on a kneeling camel. Most tour operators now provide mounting platforms attached to their trucks. This allows for a graceful ascent and descent, eliminating the camel’s need to get up and down, ensuring a comfortable experience for both the rider and the camel.

Where to stay near Cable Beach?

Given the magical yet specific timing of the camel tours, either embracing the fresh breath of early morning or basking in the soft glow of the setting sun, it’s worth considering spending the night nearby.

Staying locally not only makes for a stress-free start to your camel riding adventure but also allows you to soak up the serene beauty of Broome’s evening sky, undisturbed by the rush of return travel.
