Indochina Itinerary – Thailand, Cambodia & Vietnam Tour

Indochina Itinerary – Thailand, Cambodia & Vietnam Tour

The Indochina trail is South East Asia’s most infamous travel route. A popular itinerary crosses 3 countries, namely Thailand, Cambodia & Vietnam. It often extends to Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar, and Singapore.

This trip is very exciting, especially among travelers embarking on their first multi-country journey in the region. I highly recommend it because you’ll be able to see many awe-inspiring sights including the Grand Palace & temples in Thailand, majestic Angkor temples in Cambodia & energetic urban scene in Vietnam. Of course, all the while enjoying the different cultures and cuisines along the way.

I’ve followed the Indochina trail and have been to these Southeast Asian countries separately many times. Because of its popularity, the trip is very doable even with little planning.

How to spend 7 days in Indochina?  Check out my recommended Indochina itinerary below. The sample itinerary is easy to follow or customize in case you plan to go for 5 days, 2 weeks (14 days) or more. Scroll down to see the detailed do-it-yourself (DIY) itinerary blog, followed by a budget/expenses breakdown and lots of extra travel tips.

Marcos at Jim Thompson House

Bangkok can get quite hot during midday hours. Here are some suggestions on places you can go in Bangkok. Choose one that suits the kind of places you want to see: (1) Jim Thompson House, (2) Bangkok mall or (3) Wat Saket (Golden Mount temple), Giant Swing & Wat Suthat.

Jim Thompson House  — For culture lovers. Houses the impressive art collection of Jim Thompson, an American expat famous for revitalizing the Thai silk industry in the 1950s and 1960s. The site also features traditional Thai-style houses surrounded by cool greeneries.

Bangkok mall  — You’d want to go here not only for shopping & air-conditioning, most shopping malls in the city also have large food courts that serve a variety of affordable Thai food. Top picks include Siam Paragon, Central World & Platinum Mall.

Wat Saket (Golden Mount temple), Giant Swing & Wat Suthat  — If the heat is bearable and you want to maximize your sightseeing in Bangkok, these are excellent places to explore near the Grand Palace and Khao San Road.

0130 pm: Start Grand Palace and Bangkok temples tour

Day 2:  Beyond Bangkok

0830 am: ayutthaya day tour.

The Ayutthaya Historical Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with ancient temple ruins & famous Buddha statues. It’s one of my favorite places to visit near Bangkok!

Travel time between Bangkok and Ayutthaya is around 1h30m to 2 hours. You can choose to go on a (1) DIY trip to Ayutthaya or (2) join a day tour from Bangkok. Both are excellent options. The better choice depends on whether you prefer to explore Ayutthaya on your own or going with a guided experience with hassle-free transport included.

0830 am: Floating Markets day tour

This is the most popular day tour from Bangkok! Visit the floating markets if you want to see a more varied mix of scenery, aside from temples and city sights.

If you are traveling in a group, I recommend that you hire your own transport so that you can maximize your sightseeing. Or, go with a join-in tour with hassle-free transport from Bangkok included.

LEG 2:  CAMBODIA

Day 3:  thailand to cambodia, 0800 am: bangkok to siem reap bus.

The land journey from Bangkok to Siem Reap spans a bit over 400 kilometers. Travel time by bus is around 9 hours. It’ll eat up the better part of your day. To avoid time lost changing buses & potential scams at the book direct transfers that include the border crossing, with a reputable company.

Reputable bus companies include Giant Ibis, which offers pickup in Khao San Road, and Transport Co. (Nattakan), which departs from the Morchit (Mochit) / Northern Thailand Bus Station. You also have the option of booking from your hotel/hostel if you want to enjoy pickup directly from there. Or, book online to avoid fully-booked buses and guarantee a seat in your preferred bus schedule.

The bus fare is around USD 23-31 per person per way. Click below to see current prices, bus schedules & online booking.

It’s important to arrive at the pickup point 30 minutes to 1 hour before departure time. Carefully check the schedule, pick-up and drop-off areas.

Also, always remember that Pinoys enjoy Visa-free travel in Cambodia. Do not believe anyone who says that you have to pay to cross the border.

0500 pm: Siem Reap arrival & hotel check-in

Stay in Siem Reap central area, near Pub Street, at Siem Reap riverside or Charles De Gaulle boulevard.

0600 pm: Siem Reap at night

Enjoy a traditional Khmer Apsara dance, usually packaged with a filling dinner buffet, or one of the many show performances in Siem Reap.

Indulge in a relaxing spa/massage

Day 4:  siem reap + angkor temples, 0500 am: start angkor temples tour.

The long land travel will be all worth it after you get to see Angkor Wat and other temple ruins in the Ancient City of Angkor. With a 1-day tour from Siem Reap, you can already see most of the major temples. Greet the sunrise at Angkor Wat and spend the whole day exploring other must-see sights in the ancient city including Ta Phrom, the “tomb raider” temple, Bayon and sunset on the top of Phnom Bakheng.

On a short visit, I recommend that you follow the standard “Little Circuit” route. It’s the most popular tour that includes the most impressive temples.

Angkor Wat entrance fee

One Day admission ticket  — USD 37 per person.

3-Day admission ticket  — USD 62 per person.

7-Day admission ticket  — USD 72 per person.

Join-in or private tour package  — Join-in tours are best suited for solo travelers who are looking to share the cost of transport/guide. The itinerary typically includes the 3 major temples: Angkor Wat, Bayon & Ta Phrohm. Click below to check join-in and private tour prices, discounts & itinerary schedule.

Private tuk-tuk / car charter  — If you are traveling in a group, you can hire your own tuk-tuk, private car or motodop (motorcycle taxi). Getting a transport charter is recommended if you want to maximize your sightseeing from sunrise to sundown.

Motorbike / bicycle rental  — Cost-effective option if you want to go on your own. Take note, the temples are spread across a large area. Going by push bicycle can be quite tiring and unbearably hot, especially if you are not conditioned to traveling long distances & the heat.

0530 am: Sunrise at Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat sunrise

Angkor Wat is located 7 kilometers away from Siem Reap city center. Travel time is around 20 minutes by car/tuk-tuk. To see the sunrise at Angkor Wat, I suggest that you depart from your hotel at 5 am or earlier.

Travel hack : The sunrise time varies depending on the time of year. Before you go, make sure to check your weather app or search “Siem Reap sunrise time” on Google.

Only around 300 people are permitted to go up Phnom Bakheng temple at a time. During the peak tourist season, best to arrive earlier at around 4 pm.

0700 pm: Siem Reap at night

1030 pm: siem reap to phnom penh night bus.

The 460-kilometer land journey from Siem Reap to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam takes around 13 hours. Although shuttles are faster, I recommend that you take the more comfortable bus.

Consider checking out of your hotel/hostel before going on your tour of Angkor to avoid being charged an extra night. Most places will let you keep your bag/luggage at the concierge for free, even after checking out.

15 Things to do in Vietnam + Tourist Spots

Your travel expenses will largely depend on your traveling style and how much you plan to spend on activities, accommodations & food. To help you set your own budget, here are budget estimates if you follow the 7 days and 6 nights (7D6N) itinerary posted above. Make sure to review all discounts & online booking prices.

I’ve included backpacker budget estimates for food & accommodations to give you an idea of how cheaply you can do the trip. As you know, actual budgets/expenses may be different depending on many factors including personal traveling styles, time of visit, etc. If you have money to splurge on hotels, food, and extra activities, simply use the expenses posted to calculate your estimated budget.

Can you travel cheaper?  The entrance fee + tour/transport to Angkor Wat alone takes up a huge chunk of the total budget. It’s expensive, yes. You can easily achieve a budget of less than USD 40 per day if you skip the attractions completely… DON’T! because they are really worth the price.

The most popular place to stay for budget travelers is Khao San Road area. It is an easy base to explore  Bangkok  & beyond because of many hostels, travel agencies & transport options that can be found here.

Want better views & comfort? Try the mid-range & luxury hotels on the Chao Phraya Riverside.

If you’re after the exciting shopping scene in  Bangkok , stay near the BTS/MRT train stations preferably in the area of Siam, Silom, Sukhumvit, or Hua Lamphong BTS station. A big advantage of staying nearby is fast access to Suvarnabhumi Airport (via the airport express), and major transport hubs like Morchit (Mochit)-Northern  Thailand  Bus Station & Hua Lamphong Railway Station.

Indochina Travel Tips Before You Go

Do i need a visa, how to cross the border between thailand-cambodia-vietnam, what bus company to go with, where to book bus tickets online, useful travel apps & websites for indochina, how to get mobile internet, how to get money/cash, how to book cheap flights to indochina, should i book my indochina hotel online, pre-book your indochina tours & attraction tickets online.

Filipinos (Philippine passport holders) do not need to apply for a tourist visa before arriving in all three countries featured on this itinerary.

Pinoy travelers can enjoy Visa-free travel in Thailand for stays of 30 days or less. There’s a maximum of 2 visits annually if arriving by land. Don’t worry because you’ll only be crossing once.

For Cambodia and Vietnam, the maximum stay is 21 days.

If anyone tells you that you need to pay anything when crossing the border, insist that Filipinos are not required to apply for a tourist visa and refuse their offer. Walk straight to the official immigration booths at the checkpoint. Before leaving, carefully check the new stamp on your passport & make sure that the validity date indicated is past your last day in the country.

Go with a reputable bus company, which will provide a representative that will guide you through the border crossing process.

Upon reaching the border, in Thailand, for example, you will need to clear the Thailand immigration checkpoint and get the exit stamp on your passport.

Then, get off the bus and walk to the Cambodia side of the border. Do not leave important things on the bus. Also, take a picture of the bus no./plate no. and ask the bus driver/representative if it’s the same bus that will take you to Siem Reap. If yes, it’s okay to leave your big luggage. Just bring your valuables with you.

At the Cambodia side, line up for the immigration checkpoint, get an entry stamp and look for the onward bus to Siem Reap.

Expect the same procedure when crossing between Cambodia and Vietnam.

The process above only applies to “direct” buses.

Giant Ibis is quite reliable. They offer direct bus transfers between Bangkok, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh & Ho Chi Minh. The bus fare is a couple of dollars more expensive than competitors, but you’re assured of a safe and comfortable ride. This will be especially appreciated during the border crossings where scams are commonplace.

Transport Co. (Nattakan) is also a good option for the Bangkok-Siem Reap route.

Go with Capitol Tours or Mekong Express for bus travel between Cambodia and Ho Chi Minh.

There are also cheaper buses (not as well maintained as the options above) and shuttles (faster but less leg room/comfort). You can book these directly with your hotel/hostel. Upside is that they typically provide free hotel pick-up. Downside is that you won’t be sure of the quality of the bus company.

Pick a booking site below that offers the best rates, schedule & comfort. Buy your tickets ahead to avoid fully-booked seats.

Google Maps  — Remember to download the offline maps before you go to access the map even if you don’t have mobile data.

Use the directions feature if you plan to get around Indochina on your own. I love this feature because I often like to wander around places that I visit & see the sights on foot. The directions on Google Maps is also super useful because it displays train & bus routes in Indochina. It only works online, so you will need internet access.

Maps.me  — Excellent Google Maps alternative that automatically saves offline maps.

Grab  — I use this reliable ride-hailing app frequently as an alternative to taking the taxi. To see the fare estimates, click below to install the app on your phone & manually set the location to in Indochina. Take note of the prices displayed for your pre-trip budget plan.

Bring cash in US Dollars (USD) for the whole trip. Or, major currencies like Euros or British Pounds. Don’t exchange a lot at the airport because rates are the city center are usually better.

To avoid bringing large amounts of cash or worry about exchange rates, book your accommodations, tours, & tickets online.

The Philippine Peso has terrible exchange rates in Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. I suggest that you bring cash in USD (or any major currency). Or simply withdraw local currency from an ATM. Before you go, make your ATM card (with Visa / Mastercard / Cirrus logo) is cleared for international withdrawal.

Here are the local currencies for your reference:

Thailand —  Thai Baht  (THB / ฿)

Cambodia —  US Dollar  is the unofficial second currency. It’s accepted almost everywhere in the country & the exchange rate you will get is quite fair. Officially it’s Cambodia Riel (KHR / ៛) but you don’t need to worry about exchanging money to riel.

Vietnam —  Vietnamese Dong  (VND / ₫)

If you are flying to within the next 2-3 months, the general rule to spend less on flights is by booking sooner rather than later. In case you are booking well ahead of your trip, keep a lookout for airline promo fares & seat sales.

5 Days Indochina Itinerary

Yes, 5 days in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam is doable. The trip will be rushed & exhausting especially if you’re not used to fast-paced travel. I’ve met many travelers who have done & enjoyed a trip regardless. The five day Indochina itinerary is quite popular among travelers who want to maximize their long weekend vacation leave. You can still use the 1 week itinerary above as a general guide. Simply, take out the full-day excursions beyond Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh. Here’s a summary of the 5 day itinerary covering Bangkok, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Vietnam:

2 Weeks Indochina Itinerary

If you have two weeks, one month or more, here are more places you can include in your itinerary:

Vietnam  — Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc, Mui Ne, Dalat, Nha Trang

Cambodia  — Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville

Thailand  — Ayutthaya, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Phuket, Ko Samui/Ko Tao/Ko Phangan

December 25, 2017 at 9:29 pm

Good day sir, may I ask if is this the same process if my trip start from Vietnam to Cambodia to Thailand?

December 26, 2017 at 1:13 am

Yes, it’s the same.

Just keep this in mind: When you’re crossing by land to Thailand, the Thai immigration has a policy that you must present a minimum of THB 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 per family at the border. This “show money” can be in cash & in any popular currency. If the immigration offer tells you that your cash must be in THB, insist that their website states the money can be in any “equivalent” currency. You can check this page for more info.

Hi! Should I bring USD or would it be better to withdraw from the ATM? I’ll be in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia for 12 days.

March 12, 2018 at 4:20 pm

I find it easier to withdraw from ATMs when I travel, but I usually bring USD in case of emergency.

hello Marcos, me and my boyfriend is planning for our first ever international tour together. this will be a big help for us to visit this 3countries in our 2nd anniv. I just want to ask if we could have a city tour when we arrive there?

April 12, 2018 at 10:02 am

If i go by bus, if i happened to run out of usd, can i withraw from my debit card before i show them my money? Do they have atm’s there?

April 12, 2018 at 10:51 am

I’m not sure if there are ATMs at the border (though you’re likely to find one nearby). I recommend that you already have money in hand at the border. If you are on a direct bus/shuttle transfer, you might inconvenience the other passengers if you go looking for ATMs.

April 13, 2018 at 12:47 am

All of the above :)

Is it possible to extend our trip by ending at Malaysia via bus from Vietnam?

April 13, 2018 at 2:35 pm

All of the above :) hihi

is this possible? Thailand-Cambodia-Vietnam-Malaysia?

April 17, 2018 at 5:54 pm

Hi Mary, if you’re going to travel from Vietnam all the way to Malaysia BY LAND, you will need to pass through Cambodia and Thailand (again).

I HIGHLY suggest that you fly from Ho Chi Minh to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Flying will be cheaper and much much much faster. It will probably take you at least two days to go from Ho Chi Minh to Kuala Lumpur by bus.

If you really want to go by land. You should start from Vietnam, pass through Cambodia, then Thailand. Finally, travel south to Malaysia.

Hi! i booked from PH to Cambodia then return flight is from Cambodia to PH, plano ko sana magpunta din ng Thailand, is that possible? Makakabalik pa ba ko ng Cambodia ?

July 29, 2018 at 1:59 am

Yes, you can travel from Cambodia to Thailand and back to Cambodia. Depends on how long your trip is. If it’s 3 days, I suggest you just stick to Cambodia. 5 days, possible but half of your trip will be spent on the bus rides, which I don’t recommend. 7 days or more is doable. Kindly read the guide for travel time details.

July 26, 2018 at 1:24 pm

Hi. I read your indochina article and was wondering if it’s not scary to travel from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh during night. Also, the bus from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Min, will it automatically stop at the border for the immigration process? And my ate and I are both Philippine passport holders, what should we bring at the Cam – Viet border? Thanks!

July 29, 2018 at 1:54 am

Hey Aira, nothing specifically dangerous traveling that bus route at night. Go with a reputable company like Giant Ibis to be safe. As always, take general precautions when you travel anywhere. If you buy a bus ticket with pickup in PP & drop off in HCMC, yes, the bus will stop at the border. Then, the driver to someone will let you finish clearing the immigration. At the other side, you take the same bus company to HCMC.

I’ve already posted tips on bus companies and where to book. Kindly review the guide above. You can also check these guides: https://www.detourista.com/guide/ho-chi-minh-trip/ https://www.detourista.com/guide/siem-reap-trip/

Hello. I would like to ask regarding money when I entered tri-city. Is it a need to bring USD and exchange to local currency everytime Ill be in the different country?

December 31, 2018 at 8:35 pm

Not necessarily USD (any major currency will do), but yes you’ll need money in the local currency… with the exception of Cambodia, since USD is widely accepted there. I usually withdraw local money from an ATM. If you’re not spending a lot in each country, however, and want to avoid bank withdrawal fees, it might be more cost-effective to just bring USD bills (or any major currency) and go to a money changer.

Hi! I was wodering, how did you do the Siem Reap + Angkor temples? I mean, did you negotiate a tuktuk ride downtown at 5:00am then explore temples by foot? And where do you get an entrance fee? I am doing an itinerary for next year trip and I’m confused to whether book at Klook for a tuktuk ride or not because it seems that the tuktuk tour of Klook starts at 8am and does not match yours. I want to follow your itinerary; sunrise at Angkor Wat and sunset at Phnom Bakheng. Your blog is helpful, btw! Thanks!

Hi! how did you acquire sim cards for the 3 countries? I know from thailand i can probably pick up something from the airport when I arrive. And in vietnam I know it can be delivered to our hotel and just pick it up when we check in. But how about in cambodia?

April 27, 2020 at 12:44 am

SIM cards are also available at the airport and city center shops once you arrive in Siem Reap. Just research ahead on how to get to your hotel/hostel. The staff should know a good place to buy nearby.

Quadbike Riding in Rural Siem Reap

active travel indochina

Siem Reap, Cambodia

Siem Reap is known as the gateway to the magnificent ruins of Angkor Wat. However, beyond its historic temples and lively tourist scene, Siem Reap Province is also home to almost a million people who inhabit the rural countryside, many living off the land.

Break up your temple tours with a refreshing evening quadbike excursion of the little-seen side of Siem Reap with its emerald green rice paddies, quiet dirt roads and shy but friendly villagers. Navigate your quadbike along dusty trails past stilt houses and curious cattle, taking in the sights and sounds of rural Cambodia with a stop among the rice paddies to admire the sunset.

Exploring Monkey Mountain

active travel indochina

Danang, Vietnam

Jutting out into the turquoise waters of the East Sea, just 10 km from the centre of Danang, lies Son Tra Peninsula. The heavily forested 4,370 hectares of land protects Danang from winds, waves and storms, all under the benevolent eye of the Goddess of Mercy, an impressive 69m-high statue that has become Danang’s most recognisable landmark.

Spend the day on a 10km trek along steep, forested trails up the Son Tra Mountain, stopping for expansive views of the scenic Danang coastline. Keep an eye out for the rare Red Shanked Doucs, a shy primate species which led American soldiers to dub the area “Monkey Mountain”. At the 696m-high summit, spot the radar domes and the old helicopter pad that once belonged to the American Air Base in Danang.

Realistic Asia/Glimpse of indochina was really a blast! Long Pham was amazing to deal with and was there to answer any questions I had along the way. So many great tour guides in each country and being picked up and dropped off at hotels and airports really made everything so easy! I would recommend 100% 10/10!

Endless Beauty of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand - 19 Days Tour

Endless Beauty of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand - 19 Days

This was a varied and interesting 19 day trip. We added days beginning and end of the package. We travelled with two others and the package model worked really well. We had two glitches: our travel documentation arrived after we had left for Vietnam and so there was no airport pick up waiting in Hanoi and we didn't have the final documentation. A further concern was that our on-line Visas were rejected by the river boat Cambodian border entry folk who did not have a QR code reader. The package was excellent value, with really pleasant hotels, and knowledgeable, polite and helpful daily tour guides. The coordinator in Hanoi was very prompt in dealing with questions via WhatsApp.

Spirits Of Vietnam - Cambodia - Thailand In 16 Days Tour

Spirits Of Vietnam - Cambodia - Thailand In 16 Days

It was a trip of 14 days Vietnam, 3 days Kambodscha, 2 days Bangkok. I booked over Secret Escaoes wirh Realistic Asia as guide. In Vietnam I had a great sightseeing experience in Jan 2024. The hotels were solid 3••• Hotels partly needed renovation. Mostly organized tours, were no tour planned for 3 days Hoi An and 3 days Hoi Chi Minh. But ok for relaxing or self organised tours (extra costs). The transfers were always reliabe. The guides very competent and friendly. The trip was not without some trouble because of partly really bad room quality. Rosie from RA gave outstanding support on each issue, responded within 10 minutes or so and fixed it. Big thank you to her and her team. The price wirh 4.200 Euros. One star less only for the hotel quality (Sapa, Ho Chi Minh, Phuket, Bangkok inclusive not very good breakfast)

Reviews of Indochina Tours

Fantastic experience. We wanted to modify the itinerary to include a local cooking class for our family while in Vietnam. This request was met with enthusiasm and an amazing cooking experience was included for our family. The tour was very well organised. All information was communicated to us and all questions were very promptly answered. The tour unfolded as it was described, the guides were informative, pleasant and fun. The airport transfers and air flights were seamless. We would definitely recommend this tour.
This was my first time ever travelling without family and it was amazing! One of the best months of my life. Our CEO Tong was brilliant and full of knowledge about where we were going and what we would be doing. He made sure to have enough time for anyone and helped in anyway he could to make things run smoothly for everyone on tour including myself. If you go on this tour, make sure you ask for Tong or (Phanet Tep) as your CEO!
had a great trip. our guide was oustanding. we've been on several g trips, this itinerary and daily schedule kept us busy and always interested. would reccomend this trip for anyone interested in this part of the world.

Client Feedback for Indochina Tours

Vietnam Cambodia Laos tours - Indochina tour package

Amazing experience! We booked the "Best of Vietnam 12-day tour" with Indochina Tours, and Lynn organized everything for us. It felt almost like a private guided tour, complete with drivers for my wife and me. It was the best trip we've ever enjoyed. Lynn dedicated a lot of time to planning the trip with us, organizing two local flights, all hotel accommodations, a Halong Bay cruise, a Mekong River cruise, train tickets, and drivers for transfers to and from the airports. She was incredibly helpful, professional, and friendly.

Emily in Cambodia -Indochina tour package

My recent 7-day tour of Cambodia with Indochina Tours, skillfully arranged by Lynn, was nothing short of amazing. From the very beginning to the end, the journey flowed seamlessly, offering a plethora of incredible experiences. Lynn's unparalleled expertise and meticulous attention to detail elevated the trip to truly exceptional heights. I wholeheartedly recommend Indochina Tours for an immersive and impeccably organized exploration of Cambodia. Each day of the tour unfolded new wonders to explore, from the majestic temples of Angkor Wat to the serene beauty of Tonle Sap Lake.

Review Indochina Tour Package from couple

Jodi has organized a wonderful Indochina tour package for me in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. It was an amazing experience, with wonderful places, hotels, good food, and highly experienced English-speaking guides. I strongly recommend contacting Jodi for a unique travel experience. Moreover, the flavors of the region were a delight to the senses, with each meal offering a new culinary adventure. From street food stalls to elegant restaurants, the food truly reflected the local culture and became an integral part of our journey.

Reviews on Vietnam & Cambodia 15 Days - Indochina tour

Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia were the very countries my family visited on our last vacation. Thanks to Indochina Tours, we were able to customize the itinerary to suit our preferences, enabling us to fully enjoy the trip with our family. We encountered hardly any issues, as our tour guide was consistently attentive and provided the necessary assistance. She was outstanding and knowledgeable. The most enjoyable aspect for us was witnessing numerous natural highlights and capturing memorable photos. We would have loved to spend a couple of extra days in Vietnam.

Amazing experience ! We booked the "Best of Vietnam 12 days tour". Lynn organised everything for us. Almost like a private guided tour with drivers for my wife and I. Best trip we are totally enjoyed. She had spent a lot of time to plan the trip with us. She organised two local flights, all hotels, Halong Bay cruise, Mekong river cruise, train tickets, drivers for airports to and from hotels. She is so helpful, professional and friendly. We have a wonderful time!

I recently had an amazing 7-day tour of Cambodia with Indochina Tours, organized by Lynn. From start to finish, the trip was seamless and filled with incredible experiences. A volcano in Iceland is erupting for the 4th time in 3 months

A  volcano in Iceland  erupted Saturday evening for the fourth time in three months, sending orange jets of lava into the night sky.

Iceland’s Meteorological Office said the eruption opened a fissure in the earth almost 2 miles long between Stóra-Skógfell and Hagafell mountains on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

The Met Office had warned for weeks that magma — semi-molten rock — was accumulating under the ground, making an eruption likely.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from the Blue Lagoon thermal spa, one of Iceland’s top tourist attractions, when the eruption began, national broadcaster RUV said.

No flight disruptions were reported at nearby Keflavik, Iceland’s main airport.

Image:

The eruption site is a few miles northeast of Grindavik , a coastal town of 3,800 people about 30 miles southwest of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, that was evacuated before the initial eruption in December. A few residents who had returned to their homes were evacuated again Saturday.

Grindavik was evacuated in November when the Svartsengi volcanic system awakened after almost 800 years with a series of earthquakes that opened large cracks in the ground north of the town.

The volcano eventually erupted on Dec. 18 , sending lava flowing away from Grindavik. A  second eruption that began on Jan. 14 sent lava toward the town. Defensive walls that had been bolstered after the first eruption stopped some of the flow, but several buildings were consumed by the lava.

Both eruptions lasted only a matter of days. A  third eruption  began Feb. 8. It petered out within hours, but not before a river of lava engulfed a pipeline, cutting off heat and hot water to thousands of people.

RUV quoted geophysicist Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson as saying that the latest eruption is the most powerful so far. The Met Office said some of the lava was flowing towards the defensive barriers around Grindavik.

Iceland, which sits above a volcanic hot spot in the North Atlantic, sees regular eruptions and is highly experienced at dealing with them. The most disruptive in recent times was the 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which spewed huge clouds of ash into the atmosphere and led to widespread airspace closures over Europe.

No confirmed deaths have been reported from any of the recent eruptions, but a workman was declared missing after falling into a fissure opened by the volcano.

I dropped cluster bombs on Laos in US 'secret war.' Ukraine shouldn't want this nightmare.

All that was accomplished by using these inhumane weapons was to leave a trail of destruction that remains to this day, and a deep sense of regret for u.s. veterans like myself..

Ukrainian leaders in Kyiv and members of the Republican Party who've asked the Biden administration to release cluster munitions for use in Ukraine should beware of what they ask for. The results will be deadly and disastrous and will haunt the United States and the people of Ukraine for decades.

I participated in the extensive bombing of Laos during America's " secret war ." From December 1966 until December 1968, I was assigned to air bases in Thailand . The primary mission of the units to which I was assigned was to stop the flow of personnel and materials coming from North Vietnam through the Ho Chi Minh Trail to South Vietnam. The trail was located almost entirely in Laos.

The massacre went on for nine straight years. According to CNN, "more bombs were dropped on Laos during the Vietnam War than on Germany and Japan combined during World War II ."

Opinions in your inbox: Get exclusive access to our columnists and the best of our columns

The tactic of using cluster bombs did not work in Laos, Cambodia or Vietnam – and it certainly isn’t going to be a game-changer for Ukraine.

US dropped more than 2 million tons of bombs on Laos

Despite the 2.5 million tons of ordnance that the United States dropped from 1964 to 1973, it did nothing to impede the traffic along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. All that was accomplished by using these inhumane weapons was to leave a trail of destruction that remains to this day and a deep sense of regrets for U.S. veterans like myself.

Up to 30% of these “airborne mines” did not explode on impact but remained buried in the ground for future generations to trip over. Since 1964, more than  50,000 men, women and children have been killed or maimed in Laos. A third of Laos’ beautiful land is held hostage by unexploded ordnance preventing farmers from working the land to feed their families.

'I don't want it to happen again': Don't send cluster bombs to Ukraine. Just look at Laos.

Undetonated bombs still litter my birth country: Ukraine war shows world hasn't learned

I saw this destruction firsthand from the air and on the ground. I have seen Lao children and adults with missing limbs, eyes and mutilated faces all from unexploded ordnance.

The impact of our decision to drop cluster bombs on Laos also found its way to the United States with waves of refugees fleeing death.

When I finally retired from active duty, I moved to Portland, Oregon, where a number of Lao and Hmong refugees were being sent for resettlement. I became involved through the city in efforts to ease the resettlement and met someone who looked familiar.

On one of my visits to Hmong Gen. Vang Pao’s headquarters in 1967, I was introduced to a 14-year-old who was one of Vang Pao’s interpreters. Everyone called him Bruce. Well, here in Portland was Bruce, only he was now Dr. Bruce Bliatout , who had become the head of the county refugee and health administration.

Bruce and I, along with other members of the Hmong community, started the Immigrant and Refugee Committee Organization , which today serves a diverse group of immigrants and refugees from all over the world, including Ukraine.

Legacies of War: I helped clear unexploded bombs in my birthplace to save the next generation

Idaho Museum of International Diaspora: Why I, a former refugee from Laos, started a museum of international diaspora

What I saw when I returned to Laos last fall

I have much to regret about the time I spent in the war, many things I try not to remember. But I also recall with fondness the people of Laos and am sad for all the terrible things that took place during the war, and am driven to make amends in any way that I can and speak out to prevent future atrocities.

As chair of the Legacies of War Board , I had an opportunity to return to Laos last year. I remember gazing down as the plane started to descend and feeling deep sorrow. So many giant craters. The scarred land is a reminder of America’s deadly mistake, a reminder of the lives we took and the ancient sites we obliterated.

Yet, I was welcomed back with smiles. I met with impacted local community members, government officials and others who are working to resolve the legacy of our past.

One of the most powerful experiences that I was honored to take part in was to detonate some of these unexploded ordnance. The work required for clearance is tedious, time consuming and extremely dangerous. It's done in some of the most vulnerable areas where families are only a few steps away.

President Joe Biden and his team should say “no” to supplying Ukraine with cluster bombs and destroy every single piece from our arsenal. Take a bold and humane stance and finally accede to the Convention on Cluster Munitions banning the use, transfer and stockpiling of these indiscriminate weapons.

With U.S. leadership on this humanitarian issue, the world will pay attention and accept this as a norm.

Ukraine can win the war against Russia without killing precious civilian lives. There shouldn’t even be a debate about this if we learned anything from Laos. The choice is simple, Mr. President, don’t send cluster bombs , prevent millions of lives lost and be on the right side of history this time.

Mike Burton was commissioned in the U.S. Air Force in 1962 and spent the early years of his Air Force career in Special Operations, where he earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He was assigned to the 56th Air Commando Wing in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand, in 1966. He now is chairman of the board for Legacies of War, which holds the chair of the U.S. Campaign to Ban Landmines & Cluster Munitions Coalitions .

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

active travel indochina

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

active travel indochina

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

active travel indochina

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

active travel indochina

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

19th Edition of Global Conference on Catalysis, Chemical Engineering & Technology

Victor Mukhin

  • Scientific Program

Victor Mukhin, Speaker at Chemical Engineering Conferences

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.

Sailors can live in RV parks full time thanks to Navy policy change

Morale, Welfare and Recreation's waterfront Pelican Roost RV Park at Naval Station Mayport, Fla.

Morale, Welfare and Recreation's waterfront Pelican Roost RV Park at Naval Station Mayport, Fla. (U.S. Navy)

Active-duty sailors and their families may now spend their entire tours at some Navy bases living in RV parks, according to a recent policy change.

Navy families enjoy Navy RV parks for recreation and leisure travel, but may also choose that option for up to a year while waiting for base housing to become available during a change of duty station, Destiny Sibert, a spokeswoman for Navy Installations Command Headquarters, told Stars and Stripes via email Friday.

The new policy, which took effect March 8, also permits active-duty members and their families to stay in an RV park for the duration of their tours of duty, based on space availability, without having to request an extension.

“This policy change is one more initiative among many that we hope will reduce stressors that come with a military lifestyle by providing active-duty families more flexibility and make it easier to enjoy their Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation Program benefits,” Sibert said.

Previously, Navy MWR RV parks required visitors to renew their reservations every 30 days. The new policy permits them to extend another 180 days if space is available.

After that, patrons may extend their existing reservation up to one year from their arrival date, pending availability and with approval from the installation commander.

The 30-day limit promotes “fair and equitable opportunity for leisure travel,” while the new, extended-stay policy supports active-duty members and their families who prefer to stay in Navy RV parks long-term.

One of those long-term RV dwellers is Chief Petty Officer Wes Alexander, stationed at Naval Base Ventura County, Port Hueneme, Calif. He has been living in a 400-square-foot RV with his wife and three children.

“We decided to RV full time because the housing market here is insane,” Alexander told Stars and Stripes via Facebook Messenger on Tuesday. “Even though we are 2 hours from Los Angeles the home rent prices are usually above BAH (Basic Housing Allowance) levels.”

Alexander, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., plans to live in the 42-foot, two-bedroom RV with two full baths until he retires in 2027.

“There are many pros (of the new policy) for full time families like us, because moving is a major hassle,” he said. “It takes about 4-6 hours to move about 10 miles to the next base plus about 2 days prior we start the cleaning and packing process. Being stationary makes it feel more at home and is less stressful.”

The Navy’s Recreational Lodging Program operates 46 sites with more than 2,530 RV spaces. Navy RV parks average about 46,000 reservations per year, amounting to more than 550,000 in total and an overall occupancy rate of 62%, Sibert said.
