Dooars: All Info, Suggested Tour Itineraries and Best Places to Stay

Dooars as a tourism destination.

The Dooars is situated at the foothills of the Eastern Himalaya mountain range. It is a magnificent region full of green hills and valley, jungle, rivers and tea plantations. The origin of the name comes from the Bengali word “Duar” which means door or gateway.

This vast region acts as a doorway to major Himalayan Wildlife habitats. It also functions as the gateway to the hills in India and Bhutan. It is the home of many exotic species and rich in the exquisite natural beauty. Major rivers like Teesta, Jaldhaka, Murti, Torsa etc. flow through this nitrate-rich valley.

The three “T”- Tourism, Tea and Timber plays the role of most important economic factors in this area. The winter is chilly and the summer weather is pleasing. When the weather is clear, blue sky and green jungle welcome you to this piece of paradise in North Bengal.

Different Parts and Places of Dooars:

Dooars is a region full of diversity. With its huge area, the landscape, weather and beauty changes frequently from one place to the other. Tourists flock to this region to enjoy the beauty of the hills, rivers and forests. Winter temperature falls rapidly here, and the summer is soothing.

The rain is abundant; the trees grow to their full potential and length, forming a canopy. The good condition of the roads makes it one of the best monsoon destination in the state too. The ecstatic beauty of the eye-soothing verdure forest and the sweet song of the birds will provide you with the inner peace and calmness you seek after a tiring urban life.

Dooars tourism highlights and takes pride in the majestic mountains, various flora and fauna, tea gardens, perennial and lively springs, sandy river shores and the wide patches of grassland. There are several colonial-era heritage buildings in this area, especially near the tea-gardens.

Located in the prime spots, they provide an enchanting view over the surrounding area of gardens, hills and river bed. If you are driven by wanderlust, Dooars is a must-visit place for you.

After a day of visiting the major sightseeing points, relax under the starry sky in front of a bonfire, or watch the sunrise from the balcony of your room with a cup of tea in your hand- Dooars offers you numerous choices.

You can go to the tourist-favourite places, or explore the less-crowded options, which are unspoilt and nature is in their full glory.

Dooars Wildlife

If your passion is to explore wildlife and take the pictures in their natural habitat, Dooars forests are the perfect place for you. There are many places of interest in Dooars to visit for enjoying the wild beauty. The major forest areas in this region are Jaldapara and Gorumara National Park, and Buxa tiger reserve.

These places are rich in wildlife.

You can easily find the mighty rhino and elephants in here when you take part in the salaries. The jeep safaris are faster, and the elephant safari can take you close to the wild animals. The other common animal and birds include deer, python, turtle, peacocks, Drongo, Indian pied hornbill, etc.

There are several watch-towers placed inside the forest core area. You can watch wildlife without disturbing them from there. You would need prior permission from the forest department for this experience though. Coupled with the salt pits, these places offer a great chance to see the herds of the majestic animals.

If you prefer seclusion and beauty, tourism in Jayanti forest and hill area will be the perfect choice for you. Part of Buxa tiger reserve, the place with the view of Bhutan hills and the beautiful stream, is famous as the “Queen of the Dooars.”

Dooars Weather and Temperature

Weather and temperature across the year in dooars:.

The weather in Dooars is pleasant throughout the year. In summer the temperature does not go above 26°C, which is relatively less than the surrounding areas. In winter, it goes down to 2-3°C but does not touch the freezing point in general.

As the place is at the mountain foothills, it experiences longer monsoon though.  For these favourable weather condition, the forest canopy grows very fast and the hills often stay green.

In the table below, we can get a basic idea of the temperature throughout the year

Dooars-weather-and-temperature

From the month of October to February, it is winter in the Dooars. The temperature goes down gradually and when the sun comes out- the weather becomes pleasant.

Chapramari-Wildlife-Sanctuary-Dooars-in-Foggy-Winter-Morning

With the progress of winter, the mercury may drop near the freezing point, but snow is very uncommon in this area. Generally, the temperature hovers around 5 – 20°C. This pleasant weather is the perfect time for local festivals like the Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival between November and December.

The season begins in June with sporadic rains, but July is the true beginning of the monsoon season in here. It lasts till September, sometimes early October.

Samsing-Dooars-in-Monsoon

The average rainfall here varies between 35 – 50 cm. Between July and August, it rains cats and dogs in this region. The rivers run beyond capacity and the barrages often overload. This time of the year is the breeding season of the animals, so most of the sanctuaries remain closed between mid-June and mid-September.

The season begins in March and continues until early June. The temperature ranges from 20 to 35°C. The morning and evening are very pleasant, but the noon and early afternoon hours face scorching heat, especially near the sandy riverbeds.

Tea-Garden-in-Dooars-in-Summer-Morning

The grassland withers, the rise in the heat and humidity level become uncomfortable for the tourists. This season has a relatively better chance of wildlife sighting owing to a less amount of greenery.

Best Time to Visit Dooars

The best time to visit Dooars is in the winter seasons. This time the weather is pleasant and perfect for enjoying the jungle safaris. As monsoon just ends, the rain transforms the forest into a green paradise and the rivers run full to the brim. The weather remains pleasantly cool during the day and cold in the night. Therefore travellers consider winter to be the best time to explore the sanctuaries and enjoy the jungle safaris.

How to Reach Dooars

The monsoon is not the most favourite time for general tourists. However, for the romantic, off-beat travellers and the adrenaline-freaks, it is a great time to come and experience the rain-soaked forest life. The roads are in comparatively good condition which makes it a major monsoon travel destination in West Bengal.

Except for the peak season, summer is a good time to visit and enjoy the beauty too, if you are ready to brave the heat and humidity in the noon.

Railway-through-Dooars-Region

Some properties are well-placed near the jungle or tea-estate, with a good view over the nearby forest or tea estates. There are various other options in the nearby towns. These properties do not offer a good view, but they are inside the budget segment.

Dooars 7 Point Sightseeing Tour (In 1-Day) – Cost, Itinerary

Swarnab Dutta

  • June 23, 2023

Apart from the several national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, Dooars is also home to several quiet hamlets and scenic attractions that are worth visiting.

While staying at the Banani Tourist Lodge in Murti, we planned the seven points Dooars tour that cover most of the Dooars region of West Bengal. It is a 1-day tour that covers 7 beautiful attractions and provides you with mesmerizing views of the region along the way.

In this article, you will get to know about the Dooars’ seven points sightseeing trip from Murti. It will include places like,

  • Samsing (Shyamsing)
  • Suntalekhola
  • Rocky island

Let’s see each of these places in detail.

We started our trip from Murti WBFDC Banani Resort in the morning, around 9 AM. Our first stop was Samsing.

1. Samsing (Shyamsing)

Samsing is a quaint village known as the “Queen of Dooars”, located in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal.

Elevated at 3000 feet, this place is endowed with beautiful orange orchards, rich rolling tea gardens, forests, and different vegetation, all enveloped by wild hills.

It’s a place that seems like a photograph with rivers and mountains ruling the sites. A lot is there to be seen and felt!

You can visit the Samsing viewpoint, which gives you mesmerizing views of nature. You can also have a picnic on the bank of the Murti River, flowing through the village.

After spending some time here, we went to our next stop, Suntalekhola.

2. Suntalekhola

Also called Suntaley Khola, the enchanting village lies in the district of Kalimpong , West Bengal. The serenity and scenic nature wrap around the whole place. The name Suntalekhola means “orange stream” in the local language, as the area is known for its orange and cardamom plantations.

Here you can get to experience adventures through trekking, hiking through the trails, and go splashing in the cool flowing river. You can also choose to stay in cozy homestays, forest bungalows, or jungle camps.

When you reach there, you will have to leave your car and take a local jeep to explore the local attraction. These attractions include the hanging bridge, a small dam, and a few other spots. We choose to only visit the Hanging Bridge. It was a scenic spot to spend some time amidst nature. You can also walk to the Hanging Bridge but is not recommended.

We then returned to the location where we left our car, had some tea at the local shop, and then started to our next destination, Rocky Island.

3. Rocky Island

This is a relatively new spot for tourists and nature lovers. Here, you can enjoy the serene beauty of the Murti River and the lush greenery of the surrounding forests, with the melodious sounds of various birds. The sound of the flowing river is very soothing along with the gushing cool breeze.

You can also indulge in some adventurous activities like rock climbing, trekking, and rappelling on the rocky slopes. If you are feeling more adventurous, you can camp in the wilderness and explore the rich biodiversity of the Neora Valley National Sanctuary, which is home to many rare and endangered species.

You can learn more about Rocky Island in the article: Rocky Island (Kalimpong) .

From Rocky Island, we started our journey toward Bindu. We also had our lunch at a restaurant on the way.

This is a picturesque village that houses the second oldest dam in India, which is part of a hydroelectric plant on the Jaldhaka River.

Located at the border of India and Bhutan, the place is famous for its enchanting natural beauty. It is a realm of nature where the misty clouds descend to meet the earth covered with verdant forests. Laden with captivating sights, the village greets you with sincere hospitality.

You can also shop for Bhutanese chocolates, curios, shawls, and apricot wine from the small market set up by the locals.

After some shopping and spending time near the Bhutan border, we started out journey back towards Dooars. While returning we stopped at Jhalong.

Nestled in the foothills of the eastern Himalayas, the secluded village is famous for its cardamom plantation and hydroelectric project.

The hill station showcases some amazing places along with some good adventurous experiences amidst nature. Witness some of the incredible landscapes and breathe in all the wild environments. Staying in a tent under the starry night sky is a spectacular view to look at. You can also enjoy bird watching, angling, and trekking in Jhalong.

It is also a hub of cultural diversity as it hosts the largest marketplace in the area, where villagers from different communities and even from Bhutan come to sell their products.

Jhalong is a lesser-known hill station of the Dooars region making it an ideal place to spend some lone time within nature.

We then returned back to Murti. Let me tell you a few points about Murti, the place where we were staying.

Murti is a scenic hamlet situated beside the Murti River that flows through Dooars. Placed perfectly in the woodlands, the extremely beautiful place attracts nature enthusiasts from all around.

Murti offers many activities for the visitors, such as bathing in the river, birdwatching, angling, and exploring the nearby wildlife sanctuaries of Gorumara and Chapramari. Camping along the river stream under the starry night sky is a spectacular view to look at. You can also just sit beside the river and experience the serenity of the place.

In this place, you can find a range of accommodation options, from government resorts to private lodges, where you can relax and admire the views of nature.

There is another spot in Dooars that we missed as we didn’t have enough time. Its Lalliguras.

7. Laliguras

Laliguras is a picturesque picnic spot situated near Samsing that is furnished with landscapes of tea gardens, forests, flowing rivers, and hills. It is located along the Murti River valley, offering a stunning view of the blue water and the green hills. The stretching meadows and the surrounding topography are worth looking into.

You can also enjoy the view of the Murti River flowing through the valley and spot some rare migratory birds in winter. Laliguras is a popular viewpoint of Dooars, where you can admire the beauty of nature and relax in the serene ambiance. Laliguras looks gorgeous during the monsoon when the river flows at its full strength.

These are some places you can visit as part of the Dooars 7-point sightseeing tour in one day.

It can cost you Rs. 2200 – 3000 per car for this tour, depending on the season and the type of car you choose. You can also have a decent lunch within Rs. 200 per person at any restaurant on the way to Bindu.

So if you are visiting Dooars, make sure to go on sightseeing and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Weather and Best Time to Visit: Dooars Tourism And Travel Guide

Summer (March to June):

Summer months are undoubtedly not as hot and sultry as they are in the southern parts of the state, but could be a little uncomfortable for the tourists during the afternoons. Exploring and sightseeing may not be as easy due to the daytime heat.

Monsoon (July to September):

Monsoon sets in from July and as time goes by rains become quite torrential. August and September are the months that witness the most amount of rainfall. During these months the sanctuaries remain closed, so sightseeing may not be possible. However rains bring a lot of greenery and it may be great to explore and experience that beauty.

Winter (October to February):

Winter is the best season for visiting Dooars. The temperatures dip, there are no rains, skies remain blue and are best suited for visiting the sanctuaries, spotting animals and birds. The weather is perfect for cherishing the wonderful surroundings. The Teesta Tea and Tourism festival is also celebrated during these months. Activities like rafting, safari, paragliding etc. are held and conducted as part of these fests.

Things to Do

Things to Do: Dooars Tourism And Travel Guide

Elephant Safari:

Elephant safari in Jaldapara is highly recommended. Elephants take tourists deep into the forests where jeeps cannot travel. It allows tourists to see the animals from very close. There is greater chance of spotting wild animals on elephant safari compared to jeep safaris. Acquiring elephant safari tickets are easier for those staying in West Bengal Tourism lodges.

Jeep Safari:

Jeep safaris are the most common and popular modes of transportation inside forests. There are daily two safaris that are organized by the forest department in Gorumara and Jaldapara. They give an opportunity to spot wild animals and see the rich flora and fauna up close.

Bird Watching:

Home to rich flora and fauna makes Dooars the natural habitat of several species of birds like Lowland and Himalayan birds. It is a great place for birding and bird photography. Bird lovers can spend hours watching the birds in action and the best time to do this is between September and June.

River rafting in the gorgeous Himalayan River Teesta is great for the more adventurous people. Melli is the major point for rafting in Teesta and is located close to Dooars. There are different grades to choose from and are well suited for both - the more experienced and the beginners. December to June is great for rafting while monsoon should be avoided as the river tends to become rough due to heavy showers.

Eating in Dooars: Dooars Tourism And Travel Guide

Nestled in the lap of nature, Dooars does not boast of any luxurious or five star dining facilities. There are forest lodges that serve delicious meals and tourists can get both South and North Indian cuisine here. However, when in Dooars it is recommended to try the local cuisine which is more authentic and delicious. The extremely flavorful and popular “dak bunglow” chicken, momo platters and pickles. The roadside eateries are the best for serving up these mouth-watering dishes. Not to forget the mind-blowing tea produced by the tea estates of dooars.

Shopping in Dooars

Shopping in Dooars: Dooars Tourism And Travel Guide

In Dooars you will not find many opportunities for shopping. Jalpaiguri and Siliguri are the good places to shop, which you can do while traveling. There are local marketplaces where you can pick up some regionally made handicrafts. However, the one thing you must buy as a souvenir from Dooars is the world-famous tea that is produced by the tea gardens here. They can light up any tea lover’s day, and come packaged in beautiful cotton-cloth potlis to take back home.

It is one of the best trip of my life when I visited Dooars this month. We had a road trip from Kolkata to Dooars so it was a memorable trip. We stayed at Mendabari jungle camp, Jayanti and Neora Jungle camp. Mendabari resort is situated in chilapata forest and it was amazing stay. We also went for the safari here. The stay at Jayanti was not great but the road through jungle was mesmerising. Our last stop at Neora jungle camp at Lataguri forest was icing on the cake. This property is built amidst dense forest surrounded by 440 vault wiring. If you want to witness the serenity and thrill of jungle you must stay here. Though we were not lucky to site elephants, bison or leopard but staying here for 2 nights was an experience of lifetime.

My family and I visited Jaldapara during winter last year with Naturewings. We stayed at the Hollong Eco village resort. It was a beautiful resort very close to the forest. Naturewings arranged for all the accommodation and traveling and paid attention to every detail of our trip. The highlight of our trip was the Elephant Safari in Jaldapara National Park , where we were right in the vicinity of a one-horned rhino. From Jaldapara, Naturwings also arranged a day sightseeing trip to (insert places). It was a very smooth trip and we are grateful to nature wings for it. We highly recommend it.

I recently went to Dooars Trip, right before the lockdown. Our entire trip was planned and organized by Naturewings. From car pickups to hotels, to sightseeing, Naturewings looked after our every need. Jaldapara in February is very beautiful. It has comfortable weather, and the forest looks magnificent. We stayed at the (hotel name) which was very comfortable. The Jeep safari and elephant safari have to be booked by customers, themselves. However, nature wings provided us with all directions on how to go about it, which made our trip a lot easier. From Jaldapara, we went for sightseeing to (insert place) arranged by Naturewings. It was a great trip and we will go with Naturewings again for our next Sikkim or North Bengal Tour .

Kolkata, India

Finally three friends family decided to explore forest in last winter and close to Kolkata, Dooars was the best forest destination. Based on inputs from one of our friend, who already visited Dooars suggested NatureWings as they are the best for the Dooars Tour Package . So we called NatureWings and they guided us with a very well planned 5 nights 6 Days program. Our Dooars Tour started from New Mal Jn (NMZ) Railway Station and as per the plan, our car was waiting just outside the station. We then proceed to Lataguri and in the afternoon we took the Lataguri Jungle Safari by Jeep, where we spotted Wild Bison, Wild Elephants and few peacocks. Next day, we took the whole day excursion to Jhalong, Bindu, Paren, Rocky Isalnd, Samsing and SultaniKhola. Next Day we went to Jayanti forest inside Buxa Tiger Reserve. Jayanti homestays are very nice just in front of Jayanti River. Next day morning we took the Chilapata Jeep Safari , the jeep entered into very deep jungle, where no sun light reaches and after completing Jeep Safari Completes, we proceed to the Jaladapara Forest, where NatureWings arranged a nice resort, Hallong Eco Resort. From the resort back gate, we entered into the forest for an afternoon walk. The best part of Dooars Tour was the Elephant Safari in Jaldapara and we took at 5 am slot. It was an amazing experience as Elephant entered into the Jeep jungle and we could see a most coveted Indian One Horn Rhino from stone throwing distance. A great thank you to NatureWIngs for arranging such our wonderful Dooars Trip and will certainly recommend my friends and families to NatureWings.

Unknown Dooars : Tips to Plan a perfect Trip to Dooars

elephant-jaldapara

If you are enthusiastic to travel to Dooars, you must be acquainted with the known destinations and attractions of Dooars. Thanks to the internet. Information regarding Dooars is ample in number. The objective of the Blog is to suggest the best itinerary and stay options in Dooars based on the number of days you plan for the trip, your interests and expectations from the trip.

Fist Things First

Let me first tell you how we have suggested the places in Dooars. It’s based on the number of ‘Days’ or alternatively, you can say ‘Nights’ you have in your hand. So the criterion is the no of ‘NIGHTS’. The blog answers your basic queries required for any trip based three parameters-

Lastly, we conclude the blog with tips or suggestions from being as local and our travel experiences in Dooars.

a) No of Nights 3 or Less

If you have no of nights 3 or less, in my opinion, the best option to explore Dooars in a jiffy is – Gorumara National Park and its surroundings with a periphery of 100 km.

Why? – Gorumara

a) Small is Beautiful – When you are tight on no of days, you will surely love to make the most of it. This is where Gorumara aptly fits into your plan. Gorumara National Park has an area of 79.99 sq km. Please note an area of only 79.99 sq km. Jaldapara National Park has an area of 216.51 sq km and Buxa Tiger Reserve has an area of 760 sq km. Smaller size with higher animal density increases the chances of wildlife sightings. Gorumara is a perfect example of the aphorism ‘Small is Beautiful’.

b) The Best Watchtowers of Dooars – Jatraprasad, Chapramari and Medla watchtowers are located in Gorumara. In no other National Park or jungle of Dooars, you have the option of watchtower safari.

c) Best Stay Options are at Lataguri and Murti, which are hardly half an hour journey from New Mal or Jalpaiguri Road Station. Proximity to railheads saves your journey time and gives you more time to explore the place.

d) Explore Offbeat Destinations – Staying at Lataguri or Murti gives you the option to explore offbeat places like – Rongo, Dalgaon, Upper Fagu, Jhandi, Samabeong, Paperkheti and Kumai. You can also go for a day visit to known destinations like – Samsing, Suntalekhola, Rocky Island, Jhalong, Bindu and Paren.

e) Proximity to Gajoldoba – If you love birding and its in the winters you should come to Dooars(Last week of November to the first week of March). Gajoldoba is a paradise for birders. Waterbirds/ waders from Central Asia and Ladakh congregate in large numbers during winters. Gajoldoba is at a distance of 35 km from Lataguri. To know more about Gajoldoba please visit – Birdsong Gajoldoba

Where to Stay at Gorumara?

Neora Jungle Camp – It’s a Govt. property and is located deep inside Gorumara National Park. If you can come out of your comfort zone and want to enjoy raw and pristine jungle this is the place to stay. From your balcony, you can enjoy the free-flowing Neora River and the “Kalakhawa” watchtower is within the periphery of the property. There is a waterhole in front of the tower where animals like Elephants, Gaurs and Deers congregate especially in the dry season.

Bannani – This is a Govt. property and maintained by West Bengal Forest Development Corporation Ltd. The property is located on the banks of Murti River. One has a sweeping view of the jungle of Gorumara from the property itself. If you love the cosiness and don’t mind taking a pinch on your pocket, you should opt for this property.

All about Jungle / Watchtower Safari at Gorumara

Jungle Safari – To know all about Jungle Safari at Gorumara National Park, please visit – Gorumara Jungle Safari

Watchtower Safari – If you opt for watchtower safari, I will suggest you go for either Medla or Jatraprasad. Now, why? The habitat around both the watchtowers is grassland rather than woodland and has Observation Lanes. Observation Lane is a patch of land devoid of any foliage and gives a clear view deep into the forest. I guess now you can understand why I prefer Medla and Jatraprasad over other watchtowers. So, if you sight wildlife(both the watchtowers are famous for One-horned rhinoceros) its clean and clear. Tip – please do carry a binocular for watchtower safari.

To know all about Medla Watchtower Safari, please visit – Medla Watchtower Safari

b) No of Nights 4

If you plan for a 4 nights stay at Dooars I will suggest for 2 days stay at Lataguri/ Murti and 2 days stay at Jaldapara.

Why? – Jaldapara

a) Highest Population of Rhinos – Jaldapara National Park has the highest population of Rhinos amongst all the jungles of Dooars. The entire stretch of the jungle is grassland which increases chances of wildlife sighting.

b) Salt Licks – The jungle safari at Jaldapara is roughly about 1 and 1/2 hr and takes you the vast expanse of the grasslands of Jaldapara and covers three points- Hollong, Harindanga and Jaldapara Watchtower. Both Hollong and Jaldapara Watchtower has salt licks which lures animals like – Rhinos, Gaurs, Sambhars and Elephants. Jungle safari is conducted from two gates – a) Madarihat Gate b) Salkumar Gate. Both are equally good and covers all the points mentioned above. Tip – Opt for last safari(evening) to enhance your wildlife sighting chances. To know more about Jaldapara Jungle Safari please visit – Jaldapara Jungle Safari

c) Totopara, South Khayerbari and Phuntsholing – You can go a day visit to said places for a full day outing. To know more about Totopara, please visit – Totopara

d) Well Connectivity – Nearest rail heads are Hasimara and Falakata. Its hardly 1/2 hr drive.

Where to stay at Jaldapara

Hollong – Without any hint of doubt and most sought after and best place to stay at Jaldapara is Hollong Bungalow. A wooden bungalow located 8 km deep inside the forest. To know about Hollong please visit – Hollong Bungalow

Sisamara – To get your reservation at Hollong you need really to have some luck. Now I come to the second-best option to stay at Jaldapara. It’s Sisamara. Most of you may not be familiar with the name of Sisamara. But trust me nothing like – Sisamara. Why?? Just read my blog on Sisamara – Sisamara – Jaldapara

No of Nights 5 or More

If you have more than 5 nights in hand, I will take you to the most beautiful jungle of Dooars the Buxa Tiger Reserve. Now the most pertinent question in your mind will be why you need to have 5 or more days to explore the jungle of Buxa or Jayanti.

Let me explain – The jungle of Buxa is in Indo-Bhutan border spreading over an area of 760 sq km. Much larger in size in comparison to other jungles of Dooars. The habitat is primarily woodland. Large area, vicinity with Bhutan and woodland dampens your chances sighting of wildlife. Also, there are multiple hiking trails, historic Buxa Fort, Pokhri Lake, the beautiful hamlet of Lepchakha are the places to visit at Buxa. The point I want to make is that you may have to take multiple safaris and devote more time to explore Buxa-Jayanti.

Why? Buxa-Jayanti

a) Bio Diversity – Buxa has a rich species diversity. Animals like Clouded Leopard, Asiatic Golden Cat and Black Panther are found in Dooars. The last sighting of Black Panther by a tourist group was in the month of January 2020 and it made a news headline.

b) Hiking Trails – You can go for a trail along the Jayanti River till Boro Mahakal. Breathtaking backdrops and surreal silhouettes define our Trail along Jayanti River. Many tourists avoid the trail from their itinerary of Buxa-Jayanti. But, trust me if you really want to explore Buxa go for the trail and it will be a lifetime experience. To know more about the trail please visit – Jayanti River Trail

c) Sprawling population of Butterflies – While this was once a famous tiger landscape, it is better known today for its more than 550 species of butterflies, with new ones being added to the list year by year. Best time to visit to watch butterflies – March to April

d) Buxa Fort Trek – Once can trek from 28 Mile to Buxa Fort. It’s a mild trek about 1 hr one way. Should not be a problem for middle-aged and even older people who are physically fit. To know more about Buxa Fort Trek please visit our Blog – Buxa Fort Trek

e) Chunia Watchtower Trail – Chunia Trail is famous for Leopard sighting primarily on the banks of semi-dry Bala River. Tip: From my personal experiences, I will suggest to go for Chunia Trail after 4 pm during summers and after 3 pm during winters. At dusk sighting of leopard is more than at other time of the day.

f) Lepchakha – You can trek to Lepchakha and stay at one of the Drukpa Homestays.

g) Day Visit to Sikiajhora – You can go to Sikiajhora and enjoy country ride through meandering jungle stream. Sikiajhora is about an hour drive from Jayanti. Tip: Opt for the last boat ride at 4 pm.

Where to stay at Buxa-Jayanti

Staying at Govt. properties are not available at Buxa-Jayanti. You can stay at homestays located at Jayanti or Santhalabari. Most of us will love to stay at any of the homestays on the banks of Jayanti River and overlooking the jungle. But I will suggest you stay at Santhalabari. But why to avoid Jayanti and stay at Santhalabari – most of the homestays on the banks of Jayanti are very rudimentary in nature with no backup power. Power cut and load-shedding are quite frequent in Jayanti, and sometimes there is a continuous power cut for a day or two. Such scenarios may pose a few challenges, especially if you are with your family. Due to space constraint dining section of most of the homestays are a makeshift arrangement in the common open verandah in front of our room. If it rains during your stay which is again very common in the months of March to June, it’s likely that the verandas will get flooded with water and to dine in such an atmosphere may throw up hygiene issues. But there are exceptions. In my opinion homestays at Santhalabari are better in terms of safety and security also.

  • If you are a wildlife lover and interested in the wildlife of Dooars, please carry a binocular with you. In case you don’t have one, we are there for you. We provide Nikon Prostaff (8 * 42) binoculars as complimentary for all tours conducted by us.
  • Please carry ID Proofs along with 3 photocopies(photocopies are required for jungle safari), some general medicines, umbrella, water-resistant shoes and enough cash with you, as most of the tourist destinations in Dooars don’t have ATM.
  • Please opt for Taxi(Cars with Commercial no) instead for private number vehicles carrying passengers. Reason- Firstly it is unauthorised. Checking has been bumped up in Dooars especially post COVID-19. Such issues may jeopardise your entire trip. Secondly, most of the drivers of private vehicles are not well acquainted, with the routes and nuances of Dooars, which again can be agony and anguish for you. Even if you have to pay a few extra bugs, please go for a commercial vehicle. One thing you can rest assured that you will get a quality and well-behaved driver. Post COVID-19 please insist your cab provider to properly sanitize car prior to commencement of your trip.
  • It is always better to pre-book your accommodation and vehicles. Otherwise, you may end up paying exorbitant rates. In my opinion, it also saves time and you have a hassle-free trip.
  • If you are one of those who want to shun off other tourists and still want to relax in cosy and homely place, places like – Rongo, Kumai, Gorubathan, Chisang, Samabeong, Ramsai and Sisamara are the ones you should head for.
  • From my personal experiences, I will suggest opting for evening safaris to enhance wildlife sighting chances.

Privately owned vehicle (POV) mileage reimbursement rates

GSA has adjusted all POV mileage reimbursement rates effective January 1, 2024.

Airplane nautical miles (NMs) should be converted into statute miles (SMs) or regular miles when submitting a voucher using the formula (1 NM equals 1.15077945 SMs).

For calculating the mileage difference between airports, please visit the U.S. Department of Transportation's Inter-Airport Distance website.

No results could be found for the location you've entered.

Rates for Alaska, Hawaii, U.S. Territories and Possessions are set by the Department of Defense .

2 Choose a date

Rates are available between 10/1/2021 and 09/30/2024.

Traveler reimbursement is based on the location of the work activities and not the accommodations, unless lodging is not available at the work activity, then the agency may authorize the rate where lodging is obtained.

Unless otherwise specified, the per diem locality is defined as "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city, including independent entities located within those boundaries."

When a military installation or Government - related facility(whether or not specifically named) is located partially within more than one city or county boundary, the applicable per diem rate for the entire installation or facility is the higher of the rates which apply to the cities and / or counties, even though part(s) of such activities may be located outside the defined per diem locality.

New to riding a European sleeper train? Here’s the best way to book tickets

As more people reconsider how they travel on a warming planet, a small but growing contingent in Europe wants to switch from high-emission, short-haul planes to more climate-friendly sleeper trains.

But for all the climate benefits – plus the enduring romance of overnight train journeys – building a vacation around them is not always simple.

Several national railways and private operators have moved in to meet the rising demand, and the result is a patchwork of overnight routes sold at over 30 different websites. Many routes may not run every day, and online ticket aggregators don't include all countries that have night trains.

"I've always gone around on trains and boats and buses, so it was normal for me," said Cat Jones, founder of the flight-free travel agency Byway. "But friends would say, 'Oh, that sounds amazing, but no way am I going to plan all that.' "

Sleeper train advocates, however, say the experience and convenience of riding the rails makes them worth any booking difficulty. With patience and a few tips, you'll never have to deal with airport security lines in the middle of your European holiday.

Air travel in Europe is a mess. Trains are a cheaper, quicker workaround.

1. Start with a little research

First, make sure routes exist between your desired cities. Back on Track, a European rail advocacy group, maintains a night train database with all current and soon-to-launch routes on the continent. Just be aware that city names are listed with local spellings, such as Praha for Prague.

Then head to the sleeper train section of Man in Seat 61, a website run by former rail industry worker Mark Smith that exhaustively explains what to expect. The site has details on dozens of international routes, down to seat and berth numbers on specific trains – even photos of the food and where to find electrical outlets.

Many operators provide perks like breakfast and free water, and some allow female travelers to book shared spaces only with other women.

Once you've found the right route, check Trainline and RailEurope, which sell tickets on most railways. Or go directly to the operator's website; all will have an option to switch the language to English.

2. Decide how much privacy you need

Night trains' configuration varies by operator, line and carriage. Many trains have a car or two with traditional upright seats selling for as little as 19 euros, but they recline and are much more spacious than an airplane seat.

Other carriages have sleeper cabins with anywhere from one to six beds, which likely fold up when not in use. It's possible to book an entire cabin for a family or group of friends, but you'll pay extra.

Sarah Marks, a frequent sleeper train traveler from London, said she was nervous the first time sharing a cabin, but ultimately found it was a great way to meet like-minded travelers. "It's quite an intimate experience," she said. "But hand over heart, every single one has been really nice and actually enhanced my experience."

3. Plan to book in advance – but not too much in advance

Because most rail companies use dynamic pricing, as airlines do, the price of a ticket likely will rise as the date approaches.

But if you search for tickets now for summer travel, chances are you won't see the routes available. Many railways do not open ticket sales until two or three months in advance. Several factors influence the timing, but it's mostly because track maintenance is usually scheduled overnight to minimize commuter disruption.

"With sleeper trains, that's tricky to plan around," Smith said, noting that he often hears concerns from Americans who like to plan their trips several months in advance.

4. Be flexible

During peak times, the most popular routes, such as Paris to Berlin, can sell out or become prohibitively expensive for some travelers.

Jones said that rather than being deterred, travelers should consider rail travel as a way to break the mold of point-to-point round trips.

"If what people want is not available on that day, do a daytime train and we'll put you on another sleeper somewhere else," she said. Because Europe's rail network is so extensive, there are many ways to get from point A to point B and back again, maybe returning through a city you might not have considered visiting.

"By relying on that network effect," she said. "There's always an amazing option as long as you're flexible."
