Day 1: Exploring Downtown Denver

There is so much to see in Denver Colorado, so you won’t want to waste a second of your 3 days in Denver itinerary.

Luckily, most of the best attractions in the city center are close to each other so you can see them all on foot. However, public transport and Ubers are available if your feet get tired!

Spend the first day of your Denver itinerary exploring all that downtown has to offer.

The Denver Botanic Gardens are the perfect first stop for your Denver weekend itinerary.

With numerous landscaped gardens full of beautiful, colorful plants, stroll through here to enjoy some zen at the start of the day.

Check out the Japanese Gardens, the special exhibitions, and the public art displays.

After exploring the gardens, it’s a 35-minute walk, a 6-minute drive, or a 20-minute bus ride into the heart of downtown.

Day 1 Afternoon: Capitol Hill Area

Everything in this area is best explored on foot. You don’t have to visit all of these museums and attractions, but they are all close to each other so you can pick and choose which places interest you the most.

Pop into any downtown cafe or restaurant for some lunch whenever you need a break from sightseeing.

This sprawling green space with landscaped gardens is the perfect oasis of greenery in the midst of the Mile High City. Complete with fountains, gardens, statues, food trucks, and more, Civic Center Park acts as a communal gathering space for events and for leisure.

Visit the website  to check what’s on when you are visiting Denver! There are often concerts, fitness classes, festivals, and more.

Topped with an iconic, shimmering golden dome, the Colorado State Capitol Building is an impressive Colorado landmark.

Formerly the home of Titanic survivor, Margaret Tobin Brown, this historic building was saved from demolition in the 1960s by the citizens of Denver.

Now, the  Molly Brown House Museum  celebrates philanthropy, activism, and history. Visit to admire the impressive building or to tour the exhibits inside.

Day 1 Evening: LoDo Area

Next on this 3 day Denver itinerary is spending the evening in the LoDo area. From Capitol Hill, it’s a 25-minute walk, a 6-minute drive, or a 20-minute ride on public transport.

“LoDo” refers to “Lower Downtown”, an unofficial neighborhood of the Mile High City. It is one of the oldest areas of the city and is full of historic sites and landmarks as well as plenty of restaurants and bars.

Here are some of the highlights that you should check out while exploring this historic part of Denver.

This mile-long pedestrian boulevard is the perfect place to spend an evening during 3 days in Denver.

16th Street Mall is packed with shops, restaurants, bars, street performers, and more. Simply walk through and people-watch, window-shop, or grab a cocktail and a bite to eat.

Along 16th Street Mall you’ll pass Larimer Square, another must-see place on any Denver itinerary. As the oldest block in the Mile High City, it’s here where Denver began.

Full of historic architecture, twinkling lights, and more shops and eateries, Larimer Square is a highlight of visiting Denver. Hang out for a while or continue your sightseeing.

From Larimer Square, it’s just a 10-minute walk to Denver Union Station.

Union Station is possibly the most famous historic landmark in Denver. Not only is the station a transport hub, it’s a social and cultural hub for locals and tourists who visit Denver.

Visit Union Station to grab a cocktail, visit an arcade, see live music, or just meander around. Be sure to snap a photo of the outside of Union Station, as the historic building is one of the top tourist attractions in the city.

Day 2: Head into the Rocky Mountains

One of the best things about visiting Denver is its close proximity to the Rocky Mountains. Fresh air, lush forests, tumbling waterfalls, and jagged mountain peaks are just outside the city center.

Start day 2 of your perfect weekend in Denver itinerary with a day trip into the mountains. Even if you’re tired from the previous day of sightseeing, take advantage of the gorgeous nature near Denver and get out for some hiking and exploring.

This is a good day to rent a car if you haven’t already, however, there are tour options available for those without a car.

Located just a 30-minute drive west of central Denver, this is one of the closest mountains to the city. There is no direct public transport to Lookout Mountain. However, you can take a  combination of public buses and trains  to get there, or just take an Uber.

Once you arrive, this mountain offers a beautiful lookout over the Mile High City and its surroundings. In addition to the lookout, there are 110 acres of parks, trails, and attractions up here.

Go mountain biking, rock climbing, or hiking in the wilderness. Or visit the Nature Center to learn about the local plants and wildlife. Whether you just check out the views or spend some time enjoying nature, this free space is a highlight of any Denver trip.

Continue on exploring the nature outside Denver Colorado by heading for the  Mount Evans Scenic Byway.

This winding alpine drive takes you through the Colorado Rockies and is known as the highest paved road in North America. If you aren’t scared of heights and you love dramatic mountain views, definitely drive along some or all of the route.

From the starting point of the Mount Evans Scenic Byway near Idaho Springs, it’s about a 30-minute drive to  St. Mary’s Glacier . This frozen lake and snowfield is an easy day trip from Denver. In summer, the lake isn’t frozen and is surrounded by green forests.

Either embark on a hike near the glacier, go fishing, or just admire the scenery.

If you aren’t planning on renting a car when you visit Denver, you can still venture out to the Rocky Mountains.

Day 3: Red Rocks Park and Colorado Rockies OR More Downtown Denver

On the last day of your perfect weekend in Denver, it’s time to hit any attractions that you may have missed. Spend the morning at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and park, a famous spot in Denver.

Then for the rest of the day, either continue exploring downtown or head out into Rocky Mountain National Park if you’re itching for more time in nature.

Whatever activities you choose, savor the last day of your Denver weekend trip!

Grab breakfast downtown and then head out to this iconic Denver landmark.

Built into an ancient red sandstone rock face, the Red Rocks Amphitheatre is stunning to look at and is an essential part of Denver’s community.

This open-air amphitheater hosts festivals, concerts, and events, and you can  see what’s playing on the website .

Red Rocks Park has a few hiking trails where you can stretch your legs and enjoy the surrounding nature.

The  Trading Post Trail  is short and easy at just 1.6 miles. This loop brings you past all the best rock formations.

The  Red Rocks Trail  is a more challenging, 6-mile hike that heads into the nearby Matthew Winters Park.

Embark on a hike or just check out the park and the nearby Trading Post, Visitor Center, and Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

This giant green space in Denver is home to many attractions, as well as lakes, picnic areas, tennis courts, and walking trails. 

It is also home to the  Denver Zoo  and the  Denver Museum of Nature and Science , both of which are incredible and fun for the whole family. 

Day 3 Afternoon Option 2: Rocky Mountain National Park

Another option for your afternoon is heading into Rocky Mountain National Park for more outdoor adventures. 

This option is ideal if you have a car, as the park is about 1.5 hours outside the city. Once you arrive, you are spoiled for options in terms of activities. 

There are lots of stunning hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park, suitable for all ages and fitness levels. 

Lots of great trails begin at Bear Lake, which is a beautiful sight just by itself. From here you can choose to walk the flat and easy  Bear Lake Trail  which is less than 1 mile long, or you can hike further to other nearby lakes. 

Hiking from  Bear Lake to Emerald Lake  is a 3.6 miles long trail that passes 4 beautiful alpine lakes. This trail is moderate in terms of difficulty and has gorgeous views. 

The  Alpine Ridge Trail  is a steeper trail with amazing views, and  Alberta Falls Trail  is short but leads to a majestic waterfall. 

Those looking for more of a challenge can try the  Deer Mountain Trail , a 6.2-mile hike that is steep and offers mountain views. 

Another fun activity to try in Rocky Mountain National Park is ziplining. Soar over the treetops and get an adrenaline rush while soaking in those stunning mountain views!

The shoulder season falls between April and May in the spring or September and October in the autumn.

These times of year have pleasant weather that isn’t too hot or too cold. There is also a drop in tourism compared to the busy summer season, so flight and accommodation prices are cheaper than normal. There are also fewer crowds!

However, if you’re planning a trip to Denver for skiing and snowboarding, of course, winter is a better time to visit. You’ll get lots of fresh snow on the slopes!

Summer is the peak travel season in Denver, so the weather is hot and sunny and amazing for outdoor activities. However, the crowds and bigger, and prices are higher.

Getting around Denver Colorado is very easy and straightforward, whether you have a car or not.

If you’re flying into Denver International Airport , you can take the Airport Rail for $10.50 each way. It travels directly from the airport to Union Sation in downtown.

Things to Know

Denver is located near the Rocky Mountains, not in the Rocky Mountains. About 200 named mountain peaks are visible from Denver.

Alcoholic drinks have a greater effect when you're drinking at a mile above sea level, so be sure to hydrate and pace yourself.

Marijuana is legal in Colorado for adults 21 and older. Adults can possess up to one ounce of retail marijuana. Cannabis is sold through recreational and medical marijuana dispensaries. If you don't have a prescription, head to a recreational dispensary. Just make sure to find a private place to smoke, as marijuana consumption in public is still illegal. It's also illegal to take marijuana across state lines.

How to Get Around

Trains: Denver has 12 light and commuter rail lines covering 113 miles and serving more than 50 stations. Most notably, there’s a train that runs from the airport to Union Station downtown. Parking in downtown can be expensive, making rail the more affordable choice.

Buses: The Denver area has 170 bus routes, with more than 9,000 local stops in eight counties. Local buses are an especially good way to travel around the city center and suburbs. An express bus runs between Denver and Boulder.

Taxis: Taxis are available through companies like Denver Yellow Cab. Expect to pay about $55 for cab service between downtown Denver and the airport.

Ride-share: Lyft, Uber, and Migo are ride-sharing options available in Denver.

Neighborhoods to Know

Central Business District: This is a neighborhood that's mostly business, though it's also home to the 16th Street Mall, an outdoor promenade lined with shops, restaurants, and art. You'll also find the Denver Performing Arts Complex, Colorado Convention Center, and a sculpture known as the Big Blue Bear here.

Highlands: Highlands is a laid-back Denver neighborhood with a great selection of restaurants and bars. The neighborhood sits on a hillside overlooking the city and is sometimes called North Denver.

LoDo: LoDo is where downtown Denver parties. This part of the city is known for its nightlife, though it's also home to offices and apartment buildings. The best times to visit Denver are April through May and September through October. The city's shoulder seasons are characterized by comfortable temperatures, fewer tourists and lower accommodation prices than the summer high season. Denver welcomes the majority of its visitors between June and August when the weather is warm and arid; however, the rise in temps also leads to a rise in hotel rates. What You Need to Know

When you are a mile high You might experience symptoms such as a headache, nausea and difficulty sleeping when you first arrive. Although the chance of getting altitude sickness is low (only 8 to 10% of visitors experience altitude sickness in Denver), take it easy on your first day and save a jaunt to the mountain till the end of your trip.

When you are lost, look to the Rockies The mountains sit to the west of the city and can work like a compass to help you reorient yourself.

When you see smoke  Colorado has legalized the sale of recreational marijuana. You are allowed to smoke pot on private property as long as you are 21, but don't try to bring it home if you live outside the state.

Rent skis here  If you do plan on tackling the Rocky Mountain slopes, you'll find better deals on ski rentals in central Denver than you will at the resorts.

Culture & Customs

Since gold was first discovered here in 1858, the Mile High City has been attracting people from all walks of life. The former frontier town's population comprises Latin Americans, Asians and African-Americans, as well as a burgeoning LGBT community. Denver was also home to one of America's largest African-American communities during the 17th and 18th centuries (Five Points). Denver reflects this cornucopia of cultures in its diverse cuisine and numerous festivals – the two-day-long Cinco de Mayo festival , a stellar jazz festival and PrideFest are just some of the ways Denver celebrates its diverse residents.

They may come from different backgrounds, but Denverites have one thing in common: their love for the outdoors. Residents take full advantage of their proximity to the Rocky Mountains (as well as the abundance of green space found within the city limits), spending their spare time  hiking , biking, skiing and kayaking. You should follow their example and do the same. However, while the Mile High population is used to the city's altitude, you probably aren't. Use the first day or so to acclimate yourself, and take precautions throughout your stay to avoid altitude sickness – drink plenty of water, eat foods with lots of potassium (like bananas, avocados, granola and even chocolate) and go easy on the booze. Speaking of drinking, you would be remiss if you visited Denver and didn't try its local brew. Yes, the city is home to Coors, but you'll also find plenty of microbreweries serving a variety of craft beers. You can sample them in local restaurants or learn more about the ales on a guided tour like the  Denver Microbew Tour  or the  Culinary Connectors' Craft Beer Tour.

On the subject of imbibing, Colorado legalized the commercialization of recreational marijuana on Jan. 1, 2014 – that means that anyone who's 21 or older with a Colorado ID can purchase up to an ounce of pot in one of the state's licensed retailers. (Those who purchase pot legally can share it with friends as long as no money is exchanged.) But don't expect to see people lighting up just anywhere: Smoking is not allowed in public places. What to Eat

Back in the day, you'd be hard-pressed to find much outside the realm of steak and Mexican cuisine. But now, Denver's culinary scene has grown to include a wide variety dishes from around the world, from Japanese to the Mediterranean. The Mile High City also has its own local specialties too: For example, a visit here wouldn't be complete without sampling some of Denver's famous green chili, which is often made with tomato, onion, pork and, of course, green chiles. The stew can be somewhat spicy to mouth-numbing, depending on the chef. Another infamous dish worth tasting is Rocky Mountain oysters, but seafood-lovers be warned: This popular appetizer isn't made from oysters, but rather deep-fried testicles that typically come from bulls, pigs or sheep, to name a few.

Denver's restaurant scene ranges from hole-in-the-wall taco joints to upscale farm-to-table establishments to rowdy brewpubs with a dinner menu, so you should have no trouble finding something to suit your taste and budget. You'll find plenty of options lining the streets of LoDo,  Larimer Square , Uptown and the Highlands, but there are a few restaurants that stand out. For high-end Colorado cuisine (think prime steak and spicy chili), head to LoDo and grab a table at  ELWAY'S , the  Ritz-Carlton 's signature restaurant named for former Denver Bronco quarterback, John Elway. And for some Mexican favorites, head to  El Taco De Mexico . This little restaurant on Santa Fe Drive, less than 2 miles south of downtown Denver, is not only known for its tacos – many travelers and dining experts claim that El Taco De Mexico serves some of the best green chili in the city. Denver is known to have quite a few  good brunch spots , too.

Denver is also a prime destination for beer lovers . Home to the Coors Brewery, the Mile High City is famous for its homey pubs and sports bars. Although the dining scene has become more upscale, beer is still a staple at almost every restaurant. Still, you should plan on having at least one pint (and perhaps a meal) at one of the city's many brewpubs. To see where it all began, head to the  Wynkoop Brewing Company ; located in LoDo (a few blocks southwest of Coors Field), Wynkoop was the city's first craft brewery. Today, it produces more than 4,000 of barrels of beer each year, which it serves alongside eats like avocado egg rolls and bison chili nachos. If you want to eat and drink like a local, make your way to  My Brother's Bar  in the Riverfront district; this down-to-earth brewpub was once a hangout spot for Beat Generation leaders Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady and Allen Ginsberg. True to its name, the Mile High City sits 5,280 feet above sea level, and visitors should take precautions against altitude sickness, the symptoms of which include headaches, dizziness and fatigue. Drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous activities (and too much alcohol) for a day or so upon arrival. Only about 8 to 10% of visitors suffer from altitude sickness in the Mile High City. However, once you head to the mountains, your chances increase; an average of 25 to 30% of visitors get altitude sickness once they head up to the mountains. If you plan on visiting the Rockies , save it toward the end of the trip when you're body has already adjusted to the thinner air.

You also shouldn't underestimate the sun; even during the winter, the city's thin atmosphere makes it easier to get sunburned, so apply sunscreen regularly, even when the weather's cold.

Speaking of the cold, winter travelers may encounter "black ice" while walking or driving around the Denver area; black ice occurs when water on the road freezes and becomes practically invisible, especially after sundown. Be mindful of the weather by tracking storms and drive slowly on highways when there is one.

Getting Around Denver

The best ways to get around Denver are on foot or by light rail. Many of Denver's most popular  things to do  can be found within walking distance of one another in the downtown area. And for attractions not easily accessible on foot, the Regional Transportation District's light rail routes can often get you close enough to walk. RTD also operates an extensive bus system, but routes can be difficult to navigate if you're not familiar with the area, but the system's Trip Planner services can help you get where you need to go. Relying on these forms of public transportation will allow you to dodge parking and car rental costs, and you'll get a better feel for the historic neighborhoods if you're not busy trying to navigate unfamiliar streets.

Renting a car will come in handy if you're planning on traveling into the Rocky Mountains. Should you decide to pick up your own set of wheels, you can do so at the Denver International Airport (DEN), which sits about 25 miles northeast of the downtown area. From the airport, you can also rely on RTD's SkyRide bus or the light rail University of Colorado A line to get you into town; both one-way trips will cost $9. Meanwhile, if you opt for a cab ride, expect to pay between $55 and $75 each way.

If you’re visiting the Mile High City or are thinking about a trip, you’ll need to be prepared for the best time possible. Denver is a city influenced by many different cultures and its location a mile above sea level means you aren’t likely to experience a city like it anytime soon. If you want the most events, festivals, things to do, and the best weather to enjoy Denver — you need to visit during the summer months of June, July, and August. You can see an outdoor concert, take part in one of several festivals, catch a Rockies game and more without needing anything more than a light jacket. Denver is a car-first city but has become much friendlier to people on feet, bikes, and other alternative modes of transportation. The main, and most cost effective, method of getting around Denver are the trains and busses of Denver’s Regional Transport District , known locally as RTD .

You can utilize both Lyft and Uber in Denver . Unless you’re far outside the city, it’s easy to hail a rideshare and get where you need to go quickly.

You can call a cab or taxi for quick trips around Denver if you’re not into ridesharing programs.

There are several electric scooters scattered throughout Denver that you’re able to ride with a smartphone and credit card. Denver does have strict rules regarding scooter use:

• Scooters must use bike lanes.
• If there are no bike lanes and the posted speed limit is 30 or under, scooters must ride on the road with a speed limit of 15 mph.
• If there are no bike lanes and the posted speed limit is above 30 mph, scooters must ride on the sidewalk with a speed limit of six mph.

If you aren’t going far from your hotel or rental, a bike may be the best option to move around Denver quickly and at a low-cost. There are several bike lanes in and around Downtown Denver that give you quick passage along city streets. Denver offers several bike-renting venues to get rolling.

Denver Bcycle

If you only need a bike for a quick trip, you can try Denver Bcycles located throughout the city. Simply follow the instructions at any Denver Bcycle dock to get going. Bcycle does require a credit card.

Travel Tip on Getting Around

Rush hour in Denver lasts approximately from 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m., though traffic can be gridlocked nearly all hours of the working day. Be careful when planning your trips and schedules by considering commuter rush hour.

A Tip About Altitude and Humidity

Denver is in a semi-arid region and as the nickname implies, is around a mile above sea level. Those two factors mean Denver is dry and there isn’t much oxygen. The lack of moisture and altitude can cause issues like dehydration and altitude sickness .

When visiting Denver drink plenty of water, wear plenty of sunscreen, take your time if you’re feeling dizzy or winded, and bring skin lotion for dry skin. You can purchase supplements for the high altitude, but the efficacy and composition of some supplements is questionable. It’s great if you want to see what Denver has to offer but be smart about the altitude or you could ruin your trip.

Symptoms of Altitude Sickness

• Trouble sleeping
• A mild or severe headache
• Nausea and vomiting
• Shortness of breath

Usually altitude sickness will stop as your body adjusts, but the following severe symptoms may require a visit to the local ER:

• Severe respiratory problems including loss of breath even at rest
• Tightness in the chest
• Fainting and loss of consciousness
• Loss of coordination

If anyone is exhibiting the above symptoms it is important to seek medical attention. Occurrences of severe altitude sickness at a mile high are rare, but they can and do happen.

If you’re in Denver, you have several choices of things to do . The three main activities enjoyed in the Mile High City are trips to public parks and local outdoor attractions; the thriving food and microbrew scene; and the unique museums and landmarks of the city . There’s much more to do, but these three activities highlight the city’s strengths. Several parts of Denver are home to multiple attractions and things to do so don’t worry if your specific want or need isn’t listed – Denver probably still has it.

Denver is a primary starting point for plenty of nearby adventure in the Rocky Mountains or along Colorado rivers. Most will need to rent a car to get out of the city though RTD offers shuttles to the mountains and other nearby destinations during different parts of the year. There’s even a ski shuttle to take you directly from the airport to nearby skiing hotspots .

When it comes to the culinary scene, Denver has a fantastic variety of food and excellent locally-brewed craft beer to wash it down with. You can get everything from Asian-fusion to pub grub, but Denver is home to a couple specialties.

If you want the best local eats, you’ll need to try green chili and a good old-fashioned steak. For green chili your best bets are El Tejado a bit south of downtown, Senor Burritos in the upcoming Baker neighborhood, or any Sam’s No. 3 location. Denverites agree that green chili is best enjoyed in a breakfast burrito.

There are several excellent steak choices but if you want a historical experience venture to Buckhorn Exchange which has been a Denver institution since 1893. Other popular steakhouses include Fogo de Chao Brazilian , Shanahan’s , and Urban Farmer .

Then there’s the beer. Because Denver’s microbrew scene is bursting at the seams, it’s difficult to name individual breweries to check out so we’ll use neighborhoods instead. For the best choices of local craft beer try LoDo, Highland, River North (RiNo), or Capitol Hill. The most popular breweries include Great Divide Brewing Company , Breckenridge Brewery , and Rock Bottom Brewery.

For a unique experience, you can head to Coors Field to check out Blue Moon brewed onsite while catching a Rockies’ game.

If you’re more of a whiskey lover check out Stranahan’s Whiskey and the accompanying free tour.

If you're on a budget, there are still plenty of options to eat at. In and around downtown cheap-eat destinations include Tocabe , Pete’s Kitchen, Biker Jim’s Gourmet Dogs , and Atomic Cowboy . Many Denver restaurants also offer a happy hour or late-night discounts so use your smartphone to see what’s available on the cheap near you.

The downtown Denver area is no New York City or Chicago , so you don’t need to worry about getting too overwhelmed with locations and where to stay. If you’re trying to see as much of the downtown Denver area and the things to do within it, you can book a hotel or rental in several neighborhoods in and around downtown .

Popular downtown or adjacent neighborhoods include Downtown Denver, LoDo, RiNo, Highland, Five Points, Washington Park, and Capitol Hill. Most neighborhoods within Denver city limits are only a quick bus or rideshare away from each other so you can book your hotel in LoDo and still easily see downtown and Capitol Hill too. Denver is also a sprawling city with many suburbs. Not all these suburbs will be close to each other like the neighborhoods above. If you’re staying in a Denver suburb or looking for attractions outside the city be certain you take more time to figure out travel arrangements before booking.

Denver public transportation and rideshares can get you anywhere around the city but considering the Denver metro area is seven individual counties, be smart about booking near where you need to be outside of the city. 

If you are staying within the city limits you can choose both rentals like Airbnb or a traditional hotel for a great stay, Denver is loaded with several great options for different tastes, group sizes, and locations so whether you stay at a hotel or rental depends on your preferences and needs. Prices for both are similar though rentals tend to be cheaper for extended stays. The further away you get from downtown the less rental options you have though all Denver suburbs have hotel and motel-style accommodations.

Most people that fly to Denver arrive at Denver International Airport (DIA) Like most cities, DIA is several miles from the heart of the city, but DIA provides transportation right to Union Station in the LoDo neighborhood on the University of Colorado A-Line . DIA also provides shuttles to car rental lots to start your Denver journey.

Car Rentals

If you are arriving in DIA, you have several rental options on airport property including big names like Hertz, Avis, and Enterprise. You can book your rental directly at the airport after arrival, but it’s recommended you book by phone or online before you arrive. As mentioned above DIA offers complimentary shuttles to rental lots. You might be able to find cheaper rental options outside of airport property, but you will need to take public transportation or a rideshare to get further into the city.

Free Attractions and Events

Many Denver events and attractions will cost you a few bucks , but there are also several things you can check out without spending a single penny.

All Denver public parks are free and open year-round and during the summer some parks show free movies.

Although the two cities are close enough that we didn’t need to stay in Denver, we would often get a hotel as a staycation (especially if we were watching a game or attending a concert!). Every time we would plan a trip to Denver, Colorado, we would seek out new things to do, places to go and foods to eat. 

It is fair to say that throughout the years we have spent many weekends in Denver discovering the absolute best of the city. We can tell you, from personal experience, that a weekend trip to Denver, Colorado is a perfect place to vacation. In fact, it is still one of our favorite US cities to visit – and we highlight the best places to see in our Denver Itinerary!

Our Denver weekend itinerary is designed for people who want to make the most of their trip with a variety of experiences and adventures. Rather than detailing a weekend in a Denver 2-Day Itinerary, we have outlined 3 perfect days in Denver – assuming you will arrive Friday or Saturday and stay until Sunday or Monday evening.

On your weekend getaway to Denver, explore the sights and tastes of Downtown Denver. While we highly encourage wandering in any city, we are highlighting a few of the must-see Denver sights that visitors see. 

16th Street Mall

Start your 3 Day Denver Itinerary discovering the outdoor shopping promenade, 16th Street Mall. The 1-mile-long street, which is lined with shops, restaurants and an astounding 42 outdoor cafes, sits in the heart of Denver. A trip to downtown Denver would not be complete without navigating your way along this famous street.

Pro Tip : A free shuttle bus – called the MallRide – transports passengers up and down 16th Street Mall, conveniently stopping at every intersection along the way.

At the south end of the 16th Street Mall, visitors will find some of the best Denver attractions that are well worth seeking out. 

Denver Civic Center Park

A vast green space ringed by stately buildings, the Civic Center Park is a fantastic place to see on your weekend trip to Denver, Colorado. Marked with fountains, statues, benches and summertime blooms, the park is the site of many top Denver events. 

The Denver Art Museum

On the south side of the park is the renowned Denver Art Museum. One of the largest art museums in the United States, the DAM boasts a diverse collection of artworks from around the globe – but specializes in American Indian art. 

We recommend visiting museums on Day 3 of your Weekend Getaway Denver Trip – but take a moment to at least gaze at the architecturally exceptional DAM buildings while exploring on Day 1. 

Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception

Dating to the early 1900s, the Denver Cathedral features two soaring 210-foot spires and an astounding 75 stained-glass windows. 

Colorado State Capitol Building

The Colorado Capitol Building was completed in 1894 and still houses government offices today. The real gold dome is a nod to the Colorado Gold Rush. A must-see in Denver, Union Station is the city’s transportation hub – as it has been since it opened in 1881. In addition to the trains and buses that buzz through Union Station in Denver, the station itself has been renovated to host shops, restaurants, bars and even a hotel. 

The train station façade is especially spectacular at night when the famous Denver Union Station sign glows red.

LoDo Denver

LoDo – or Lower Downtown – is the oldest neighborhood in the city and one of the best places to visit in Denver.

The Lower Downtown district dates to the 1850s – and throughout history it has seen many changes; from the introduction of railway traffic to serving as Denver’s Chinatown to devolving into a derelict area of disrepute. In the late 1980s, LoDo got a facelift and is now a mix of historic dwellings, modern structures and entertainment complexes (such as Coors Field and McGregor Square).

Things To Do in Denver LoDo

There are many fun things to do in Denver LoDo district. In fact, what the LoDo district is now best known for – and the reason to include it on your Weekend in Denver, Colorado Itinerary – is the jubilant nightlife. There are ample dining options and a slew of places to have a few pints of locally produced Colorado craft beer.

Before you dive into Denver nightlife, however, there are two must-see places in LoDo that travelers should make a point of visiting: Larimer Square and the Tattered Cover. 

Larimer Square

Marking the historic commercial center of Denver, Larimer Square was created in the year 1858. Through the years, the square has been transformed and revitalized and today it is features boutique shops and specialty restaurants. 

Tattered Cover Bookshop

The Tattered Cover Bookstore opened as a small shop in 1971. Today, however, it boasts multiple locations and ranks as one of the top independent bookstores in the USA. The Denver location regularly features author signings and other literary events.

On the first night of your weekend in Denver, CO, dine in LoDo at one of the best restaurants. 

Wynkoop Brewing Company Denver Restaurant

Wynkoop Brewing Company is a Denver institution and our top recommendation for food and drink in LoDo. We think it is one of the best places to visit in Denver to understand the city’s celebrated history with craft beer (and the food is pretty fabulous, too!).

Wynkoop was the first brewery on the scene in LoDo, opening in 1988. Featuring unique local brews and a jovial environment, they offer a beer pairing menu and tasty food offerings. Try the Bison Burger and the Beer Cheese Soup!

If you are looking for something a step up from bar food for your Denver, Colorado trip, check out Woodie Fisher, a historic fire station converted into an upscale restaurant. Another option is Mercantile Dining and Provision, which is a chic spot serving fresh and innovative fare.

Denver has a solid reputation as a craft beer city – and sampling some of the local brews is a must on any trip! In addition to Wynkoop, there are heaps of other breweries that have taprooms in downtown Denver.

Day 2: Local Denver Market and Regional Exploration

Union Station Farmers Market

Open on Saturdays during the summer months, the Union Station Farmers Market is a small, community market and one of the cool places to visit in Denver.

The non-profit, zero-waste market is focused on farm fresh produce and embodies the spirit of supporting local farmers and businesses. In addition to the produce available at the market, some vendors sell ready made food – like tacos and baked goods – making it a good first stop of the day.

Pro Tip : If your trip does not coincide with a Saturday when the market is taking place, no worries! Instead, go to Union Station for breakfast at the oh-so-popular Snooze. Known for their pancakes (like Pineapple Upside Down Pancakes) and eggs benedict (such as the Bella Bella Benny), Snooze is one of the top brunch eateries in Denver!

Venture Outside on a Day Trip from Denver

In the afternoon, go on an adventure outside of the city limits for the day on one of the quick weekend trips from Denver. There are numerous nearby destinations that can certainly entertain visitors, but we think a half-day trip to Boulder is the best choice!

Boulder – Hike, Shop, Drink, Eat

The nearby city of Boulder is easy to get to on a trip to Denver, Colorado. Located 30 miles northwest of Denver at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Boulder ranks as one of the most beautiful cities in the USA. Although now exceptionally affluent, Boulder still clings to its hippie roots. With ample outdoor spaces and a picture-perfect main pedestrian thoroughfare, Pearl Street, Boulder is a must-see destination.  

Top attractions in Boulder are the many hiking trails that climb into The Flatirons, shopping on Pearl Street, sampling the cuisine and drinking locally produced craft beer.

Denver visitors with a car can easily plan their own day trip to Boulder. Travelers without a car can take a bus (1 hour) or get an Uber , but the fee for the one-way ride can easily exceed $100. Another fun option to see Boulder and get in a hike is to join the Boulder Hike and Beer Tour .

Pro Tip : Boulder is also home to the University of Colorado, which has a great campus to explore. When on the CU campus, be sure to pop into The Sink, a Boulder institution that serves amazing burgers, incredible pizzas and a huge selection of Colorado microbrews.

Denver Teams

Denver is home to five professional sports teams: Colorado Rockies Major League Baseball, Denver Broncos football, Denver Nuggets basketball, Colorado Avalanche hockey and Colorado Rapids soccer.

Denver Botanic Garden

Stroll the magnificent and lush grounds of the Denver Botanical Gardens. The urban oasis was founded in 1951 and ranks as one of the top botanical gardens in the United States for its collection of plants and diverse gardens. Tropical plants are housed in the conservatory and artwork is found throughout the garden. Get tickets in advance!

Denver City Parks

However, if you want to go to a free park in Denver, there are a few good options right in the heart of the city. 

Set off on a walk through Cheesman Park, which is a wide open space offering skyline views and mountain vistas – and is good for walking, jogging and picnicking. 

Denver City Park features intertwining trails, lakes and a multitude of other cultural attractions – including museums and the zoo (which we talk about more in a minute). 

South of Denver is the lovely Washington Park. With expansive lawns, walking trails, lakes and a boat house, it’s a top Denver outdoor destination. Visitors can make a day of it by also spending time at the nearby Old South Gaylord Street Shops, which is an entire block of cute boutique shops and cafes. 

Rocky Mountain Arsenal and Wildlife Refuge

Alternately, if you have a car, consider a visit to the amazing (and free!)  Rocky Mountain Arsenal and Wildlife Refuge . Located close to the DEN Airport, the nature area contains many bison, deer and marmots! Take the 11 mile drive through the park and then walk along one of the several trekking trails.

If you are planning a Family Itinerary to Denver, Colorado, perhaps consider spending the morning at the Denver Zoo instead. The zoo, which was established in 1896, features natural enclosures and has won numerous awards for its environmental accomplishments.

The Denver Airport is located about 25 miles from downtown Denver – so you will need to consider how you will travel to Denver from the airport.

The convenient A Line Commuter Train is a good way to get from DIA to Denver city center, but there are also buses, shuttles and private transfers, which can be booked in advance . Booking private transfer may cost less than the train if traveling with a group of people…and is possibly even cheaper than hopping into a Uber.

We stayed in the Denver downtown Westin on more than one occasion. Centrally located and outfitted with top amenities – it is the perfect hotel for Denver weekend trips.

What we liked best about staying at the hotel on a downtown Denver trip is the 2 swimming pools, an on-site bar and restaurant and comfy beds, some of the rooms have mountain views. Check availability!

Located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Denver, Colorado is a fast-growing city attracting visitors from near and far. Each of Denver’s neighborhoods is unique in its own way, whether it’s the hip and urban RiNo (River North) Arts District or the charming green space known as Wash Park. 

Interested in the arts, cuisine, or craft beer? Denver has it all. And the best part? You’re likely to wake up to sunshine and clear skies almost every day! 

Aside from its unique array of neighborhoods, you’re just a short drive from some of the most famous mountains in the country. Hiking, skiing, mountain biking, and snowmobiling await. 

As someone who has lived in Denver for years now, I can attest to the city’s warmth and friendliness, so unique and beautiful it’s hard to find elsewhere. There’s truly something for everyone in the Mile High City!

PRO TIP: Before we get going, remember that the elevation in Denver is much higher than you’re likely used to! I’d recommend giving yourself at least a day or two to acclimate before doing any strenuous activities or hikes. 

Best Areas in Denver

Downtown denver.

Downtown Denver is the most convenient place to stay in terms of convenience and things to do in one central location. It’s home to the city’s Union Station, which serves as a hub for Amtrak and Denver RTD. 

Trains and buses run through here, making it easy to get around. There’s even an easy train from the airport to Union Station, with a 37-minute trip costing just $10.50 one way. The area also offers convenient access to popular mountain destinations like Vail, Breckenridge, and Winter Park. In the winter, Amtrak offers separate weekend access to and from Winter Park. 

Additionally, downtown Denver offers sports stadiums such as Empower at Mile High for football and shows and Coor’s Field for baseball and concerts. 

You’ll find a plethora of restaurants, bars, and shops lining every street, with easy access to nearby fun areas like LoHi and RiNo.

Capitol Hill 

One of the most historic Denver neighborhoods, Capitol Hill, was home to Titanic survivor Molly Brown. Capital Hill comes with a rich history – literally and figuratively. It used to be home to Denver’s wealthiest residence, which used to reside on Millionaire’s Row. 

Historic homes and museums can be found throughout the area. Capitol Hill is also home to many festivals, such as the Cinco de Mayo and Pride parades. 

The downtown 16th Street free bus begins in Capitol Hill, making it an easy trip to and from downtown.

2. Get lost in Meow Wolf

Trust me, you will get lost. This convergent station will have all of your senses tingling! You can leave a few hours to wander around this immersive experience and you still won’t make it through it all. 

3. Find the bar above Union Station 

Make your way up the stairs by the Amtrak ticket counter to find this hidden gem. Take in the wine and craft cocktail list – it’s one of my favorites in town!

4. Steal some laughs at the Denver Comedy Club

Pro tip: start your night with an espresso martini and laugh until you can’t breathe 

5. Stroll through the Botanic Gardens

Grab a seasonal pass if you love city escapes and wildflowers. 

6. Shop til you drop at Wash Park or LoHi

Both neighborhoods are filled with cute boutiques to window shop or find local gifts and souvenirs. 

Budget Attractions 

7. have a picnic at the parks .

Check out the green space and mountain views from Wash Park, Commons Park, and City Park. 

8. Catch a ball game at Coor’s Field 

They’re [usually] not great, but the tickets are cheap and the views are spectacular! Ask for the Rock Pile tickets at the counter for the cheapest option.

Pro tip: the sunsets from the stadium will blow your mind! 

9. Zip down the Cherry Creek Trail on a bike or scooter 

40 miles of trails?! You read that correctly. Denver is a bikeable city, and this is one of the best! Ride along the South Platte River. It’s as close as I can get my Caribbean heart to a beach downtown. 

Near Denver

10. go camping.

You’re 1-4 hours away from dream-worthy dispersed camping sites. Colorado Springs, Rocky Mountain National Park, Vail, Rio Grande National Forest, and Telluride are just a few of the coveted camping destinations you have to see to believe. I like to camp near reservoirs and lakes – it’s the closest I can get to feeling like I’m on a beach in Turks and Caicos in Colorado.

11. Ski and snowboarding in Colorado’s famous mountain towns 

Winter Park is the closest mountain town to Denver – there’s even an Amtrak train that runs to and from the mountain on the weekends in the winter months. 

Breckenridge, Vail, Copper Mountain, Keystone, A-Basin, and Steamboat Springs are all 2-3 hours from the city. There are tons of transportation options to the mountains from the airport and downtown. 

12. Soak in the hot springs 

Looking for an Instagram-worthy day out? Steamboat Spring’s Strawberry Hot Springs is situated just outside of downtown Steamboat. You can make a trip up to the springs or spend the night in one of their coveted cabins. 

Pro tips: Reservations need to be made ahead of time. If you don’t have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, you can purchase a round-trip shuttle to take you to the hot springs from downtown. 

13. Catch a show at Red Rocks

The most visited venue in the world, Red Rock Amphitheater is a high bucket list venue for artists from all genres. Catch a variety of performers here every summer, from Big Wild, to Sublime and Sting to Wiz Khalifa.

You can even catch a few coveted comedy shows at the historic venue. 

What time of year should you visit Denver?

Four seasons, four completely different experiences in the Mile High City! 

If you’re a fan of hiking, camping, breweries, and sunshine, summer in Denver is frequently overlooked! The parks in Denver are filled with green grass, volleyball games, and cookouts. 

Restaurants open their patios and rooftops for you to enjoy the daily sunshine. Although it can get hot with 95-degree days, there is very little humidity – and even better, very little rain – which is one of the perks of visiting Denver in the summer.

While the heat isn’t too bad, having a pool at your hotel or rental is a great perk. 

What to pack in the summer: hiking shoes, active shorts, and lightweight shirts, raincoats for afternoon showers, sundresses, hats, and plenty of sunscreen (the sun hits harder in Denver!)

Fall is known as a rainy season in many areas, from the West Coast to the Caribbean . However, fall is the absolute best time to visit Denver! The sun is still shining, the heat is cooling down, and the summer crowds disappear. 

But the real beauty of fall in Denver lies in the changing aspen leaves – the mountains turn into a shimmering golden paradise. 

It’s my favorite time to go camping and hiking, even though the nights get super chilly. To top off the perfect weather, there is almost no rain in the fall, even in the mountains, making it an unbeatable season in Denver. 

What to pack in the fall: hiking gear, lightweight shirts, and pants, 1-2 pairs of shirts for hot days, a light sweater or jacket for chilly evenings. 

Winter is when I prefer to run to the islands , but is arguably the most popular time to visit Denver. 

When it comes to mountain towns around Denver, both locals and visitors are drawn to the area’s renowned ski resorts. Colorado offers a wide range of winter activities such as skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

It’s worth noting that this is the priciest time to visit, with skyrocketing prices in the mountain towns and increasingly expensive ski passes.

Nevertheless, despite the expense, people continue to visit for good reason.

What to pack in the winter: all your heavy stuff! Puffer coats, hats, gloves, waterproof ski jackets and pants, skis, snowboards, and sweaters 

The spring air is hard to beat, but unfortunately, spring has turned into Denver’s rainy season over the past few years. 

While it’s still less rainy than many spring destinations, Spring is a big shoulder season in Denver. When it’s not rainy, the weather is warm and great for hiking and strolling around Denver’s neighborhoods. 

Shoulder season also means cheaper prices and fewer crowds. Spring is the perfect time for exploring the city’s history and culture, bar hopping, and tasting the city’s famous brews. 

What to pack in the spring: a mix of cool and warm clothes, raincoats, light jackets for the evenings, and hiking gear. 

Getting Around Denver

Public transportation.

Public transportation is available to and from the DEN airport to downtown Union Station. The 16th Street bus is a free service that will get you around downtown. 

Shuttle Bus Companies and Amtrak

Several bus companies have routes to and from multiple mountain towns from the airport and Union Station. These need to be reserved ahead of time, but are great ways to avoid renting a car to get to the mountain towns. 

If you don’t plan on staying at the ski resort, towns like Breckenridge have bus services to get you to the ski resorts from certain areas. 

Rental Cars

A necessity if you’re planning on visiting more than one area or town. However, the mountains in the winter require a 4-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle with snow tires. Keep this in mind when budgeting. 

In the summer, if you want to go on hikes, parks, and camping, you’ll obviously need your own car to get around. 

Ubers, Bikes, and Scooters

Ubers, bikes, and scooters are an easy option for navigating around Denver and its neighborhoods. Bikes and scooters, of course, aren’t the best option in the winter when the roads are slick!

If you want to only visit downtown Denver and its neighborhoods, I’d suggest visiting for 3 to 4 days. If you want to visit downtown Denver and its nearby outdoor activities and mountain towns, 5 to 7 days will allow you more time to acclimate and explore.

The most important thing to know before going to Denver is that the elevation and cause some odd symptoms and you may need 2-3 days to acclimate before doing any strenuous hiking or activities. 

Is it worth it to go to downtown Denver?

Yes – it is absolutely worth going to downtown Denver. Downtown Denver is a central location filled with sports and some of the city’s most popular attractions, restaurants, and bars. It’s also where you’ll want to be for sporting events and concerts. 

Is Denver a walkable city for tourists?

No, Denver is not very walkable. Unless you’re staying directly downtown and don’t plan on visiting any surrounding neighborhoods, you’ll need a car, scooter, or Uber to get around.

Tens of thousands of people have been drawn to the Mile High City in recent years, which makes sense considering it’s an outdoor lover’s paradise. From offbeat adventures to popular but oh-so-worth-it tourist attractions, here’s what you just can’t miss while exploring Denver:

How Long Should I Spend in Denver?

As there are SO MANY places to visit in Colorado , you don’t want to spend all of your time in Denver! While it’s an iconic city, you can easily see all it has to offer in 3-5 days before heading elsewhere in the state.

That being said, you don’t want to rush through Denver either. It’s a rare combination of mountains and city life, with all the best qualities of both. With so many great day trips nearby , you could easily base yourself in Denver for a week or more if you have the time!

The following is a sample 3-day Denver travel itinerary , which should give you some idea of what you should cover, and how to squeeze all of the juice out of this Coloradan gem…

Day 1 in Denver: Downtown and Golden Triangle

On day 1 of our Denver travel itinerary, we start our day near the Capitol Building in the so-called “ Golden Triangle ” neighborhood of Denver. This area hosts some of the most significant landmarks in the city including the aforementioned Capitol, the Denver Art Museum , the Molly Brown Museum , and Civic Center Park .

The Art Museum is known for its excellent exhibitions and ultra-modern design, which provides the setting for some of the best photos in Denver.

Moving on to Downtown , we enter the Central Business District of Denver – home to the majority of the city’s skyscrapers and shopping malls.

The 16th Street Mall is the most popular corridor to go shopping and makes for a lovely (and brief) tour of Denver’s rapidly growing urban core. Free buses run along 16th Street for most of the day.

If you’d like, take a detour to the Colorado Convention Center to spot the famous Big Blue Bear !

As we approach the end of 16th Street, we arrive at Union Station , which serves as both a train station and cafeteria. There are lots of little eateries, bars, and restaurants inside Union Station and I personally love how exciting they make the vibe of the station.

Whereas many American train stations feel decrepit, Union Station feels active and alive with both travelers and patrons alike.

Beyond Union Station is Confluence Park, where I recommend taking some time to relax before heading to the Highlands . The Highlands is one of the coolest neighborhoods in Denver and a great place to grab a drink. End your day with a beer and some sweet views of the city, especially at Avanti .

Day 2: RiNo, Midtown, and Colfax

Now that we’ve gotten the city center out of the way, it’s time to focus on some of the more alternative points of interest in Denver.

Let’s start our day off in City Park . This green space was designed similarly to New York City’s own Central Park, that is, to be a sprawling and serene oasis in the city.

City Park is exactly as it should be then as it’s a pretty expansive area you can easily get lost in. It even contains the Denver Museum of Science and even a golf course! If you don’t fancy visiting any of these places then just relax and soak in some of the best views of the Denver skyline.

Moving west from City Park, hit 17th Street aka Midtown , which is a bit of a local spot. There are some very good bars and restaurants in this area– Steuben’s is always a good idea–but most tourists tend to skip over this part of town.

Colfax Avenue runs a couple of streets parallel to 17th, so if you feel the need to see “the longest, wickedest street in America,” then be my guest. Most people have a love-hate relationship with this street and as one local put it: “if you can love Colfax, then you’ll love Denver.”

Our ultimate destination is the RiNo district to the north. After departing 17th/Colfax, we’ll pass through Five Points – one of the most rapidly changing neighborhoods in Denver – before arriving in RiNo.

RiNo (River North) was once one of the worst areas in Denver, a hangout for junkies and squatters. Nowadays it’s arguably the hottest part of town.

New bars and restaurants, as well as amazing street art and murals, are constantly popping up around RiNo.

End your day at the impressive Source facility for some grub. Aside from being visually fascinating, the Source hosts some of the best restaurants in Denver that are sure to leave you satisfied.

Day 3 in Denver: Off the Beaten Path in Denver

Today, we’re going to go a bit off the beaten path and visit some of the best places near Denver. There are many options and you’ll have quite a bit of flexibility when it comes to choosing your activities. So let’s get to it and slay this final day of our Denver travel guide itineraries!

Note that all of the places mentioned in this section can be reached by public transit, but you should consider renting a car.

Boulder – Boulder is Denver’s neighbor city and is well-known for its liberal-minded and affluent population. Boulder, compared to Denver , is smaller and pretty quiet but is much closer to the Rocky Mountains. Some of the best attractions near Denver are located around Boulder including the Flatirons, Eldorado Canyon, and Isabelle Lake. Visit Boulder for a chance to get outdoors and play around a bit.

Golden – A small town at the base of the Rockies. Golden is great for those who want to get a feel for a Colorado mountain town but don’t want to leave the actual city. Aside from being beautiful and hosting a number of hikes, Golden is also home to the Coors Brewery, which offers free tours!

Cherry Creek State Park – A very popular getaway for Denverites. Cherry Creek State Park offers swimming, camping, and boating all within the Denver metropolitan area! Come here for the day if you’re feeling a little burnt out or if you want to scope some of the best views of the Denver Skyline.

Rocky Mountain Arsenal – A formal chemical weapons plant that was turned into a wildlife refuge after much rehabilitation. It hosts an impressive array of local fauna, most notably a large herd of bison. It’s the closest place to Denver to see wildlife like this. It also has awesome views of the city.

1. Go on a brewery tour

Check out Rocky Mountain National Park for some amazing hiking trails or A-Basin for skiing, which is hands down the most popular thing to do near Denver in the winter.

3. Explore Denver’s Food Scene

Denver has some truly spectacular eats, with numerous award-winning restaurants from all types of cuisines. From delicious donuts to bison burgers and Mexican food, Denver has a WIDE variety of delicious foodie tours and secrets that cater to all palettes.

4. Explore Downtown Denver

Want to see all the best places in Denver in a short amount of time? Then grab a bike and go! Seeing Denver from two wheels is a fun way to take in all it has to offer. While it might not be Amsterdam but bike travel is becoming more and more popular in and around the city, so you’ll be rubbing shoulders with locals as you explore the city.

5. Visit the Denver Museum of Nature & Science

An excellent thing to do with children in Denver, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science is filled with interactive and intriguing exhibits. Boasting a planetarium, a robotics exhibit, and an amazing collection of archaeological finds, everyone is bound to have a great time discovering some of the most interesting facets of of the scientific world.

6. Get artsy in RiNo

Red Rocks is one of the most famous music venues in the USA and for good reason! Built into the side of a mountain and surrounded by out-of-this-world rock formations, there are few better places to get lost in the music.

9. Learn how to rock climb

Have you ever wanted to learn how to rock climb but weren’t sure where or how to start? Now’s your chance! You can join this highly-rated tour that will introduce you to all the basics as you get up onto a real rock face!

Equipment and an experienced instructor will be provided, so don’t have to worry about anything besides building those skills as you get acquainted with one of Colorado’s favorite sports.

10. Relax in City Park

City Park is a great place to relax for an afternoon and to recover from that long night out. Have a picnic, walk around the lake, or bring a frisbee and a few mates from the hostel. It’s the perfect chilled spot when you need to chill.

Denver accommodation comes in all shapes and sizes. Hotels, condos, apartments, B&B, luxury trailers, hotels with private hot tubs ; you name it, Denver’s got it. They obviously range in price, and some lodges in Denver can be quite expensive.

If you’re going to travel to Denver on a budget, then you’re going to need to stay in more affordable digs. Thankfully, the hostels in Denver are high quality and could compete with anything you find in Europe or South America.

Most Denver hostels are around $20-$30/night, which is cheaper than any hotel in the city, even for couples.

If you’re looking for a more private place to stay in Denver, I recommend checking out some Denver Airbnbs . They are often better priced and far more interesting than hotels, which are usually a bit drab. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can also check into Denver’s VRBO options. Central Business District

Located north of Capitol Hill is the Central Business District. Don’t let the name of this district fool you, the Capitol Business District – or CBD – is actually one of Denver’s most fun and lively areas.

LoDo is without a doubt the coolest neighbourhood in Denver. It is nestled between the South Platter River and the Central Business District and is just a short walk from downtown Denver.

One of the oldest residential districts in Denver, Uptown is a neighbourhood renowned for its historic architecture, charming shops and it’s quaint and relaxed vibe – making it the best area to stay in Denver for families.

Denver is a very arid place, which is due in part to its mile-high elevation and lack of rainfall. While visiting Denver, the moisture will literally be sucked from your body by the atmosphere and dehydration is very possible at all times.

Wild temperature shifts are also common and it’s not unheard of to see 40F swings in the course of 24 hours. In fact, daily highs and lows in the city are about 20F apart on average. Crazy storms can sometimes roll in as well and dump rain or snow in the city at a moment’s notice.

Bipolar weather aside, Denver is still one of the sunniest places in the USA! The city (supposedly) receives over 300 sunny days a year.

There are two peak seasons in Denver: summer and winter . Summer is peak hiking and festival season while winter is when everyone (I mean, everyone) comes to ski.

Summers (June-September) in Denver are warm and prone to afternoon thunderstorms. Winters (November-March) are frigid but relatively dry, with most of the season’s snowfall coming in short stormy bursts.

Spring  (April-May) is very short in Colorado, sometimes indistinguishable, which leaves some people asking “When is spring in Denver again?” May, when the flowers and trees bloom, is a very lovely time of the year though.

My favourite season in Denver is autumn . Temperatures are still comfortable and the trees begin to turn gold, the latter of which is a spectacular phenomenon that needs to be witnessed. Especially considering this region is home to some of the best hikes in the USA .

What to Pack for Denver

Denver’s climate can get CRAZY so even if you’re coming in the middle of the summer/winter, you’re going to want to be prepared for anything. The month you travel in is important for your packing lists, but here are some items you can’t go wrong with year-round:

ALL travellers need a headtorch – no exceptions! Even in the hostel dorm, this beauty can save you in a real pinch. If you haven’t got in on the headtorch game, DO. I promise you: you’ll never look back. Or at least if you do, you’ll be able to see what you’re looking at.

Denver safety really depends on where you are located. In certain areas, you could walk around at night and never be bothered. Some places in Denver can be a little sketchy though.

The most infamously dangerous places in Denver are Aurora and Colfax Avenue, the latter of which runs all the way from Aurora through Denver. These areas can be pretty wild sometimes depending on the time of day and how active thieves are. I myself have seen people robbing liquor stores in broad daylight on Colfax, which is pretty bold.

Colfax is the main motorway of the city and hosts a lot of Denver’s attractions so you’ll need to have an awareness of the area.

On the other hand, Aurora is pretty far away from anything and not many tourists find a reason to travel out there unless they’re looking for some authentic Mexican food.

Regardless, you still need to be alert and aware of the usual safety practices when it comes to traveling.

The rest of Denver is relatively safe. Certain neighborhoods, like Highlands, RiNo, and Five Points, may have been more harried at one time, but these days they are safe enough and far more whitewashed. (Thanks, gentrification.)

There is a decent-sized homeless population in Denver that likes to hang around Downtown, especially on Park Avenue near the shelter. Most of them are harmless and may even strike up a frenzied conversation.

If you feel threatened, seek help from someone nearby or call the police (phone: 911 in the US).

Sex, Drugs, and Rock ‘n’ Roll in Denver

Let’s be real: Denver is certainly a drug tourism playground. From its extremely strong and varied legal marijuana scene to underground music events with everything on offer, it’s almost too easy to get high in Denver.

Marijuana (and associated oils and edible products) can be purchased at any of the MANY dispensaries that can be found in and around the city. Provided you’re 21 of course! Denver is also quite famous for its brew scene–you can find all types of locally flavored beers to choose from.

Now time for some real talk.

While partying it up at Red Rocks might be one of the best things to do in Colorado, ending up at the hospital or worse after certainly is NOT. Yes, you can find all types of goodies in and around Denver, but don’t forget about America’s very serious fentanyl epidemic. ALWAYS test before you ingest. While we love visiting Denver to run away to the mountains, the city is kind of in the middle of fuckin’ nowhere. The nearest “big” cities – Albuquerque and Salt Lake City – are over 6 hours away by road and let’s not even think about how far the ocean is.

Unless you are on a massive road trip from the East Coast to the West Coast of the USA, 99% of people will arrive in Denver by flying.

Denver International Airport is the main air travel hub of the region and, befittingly, also in the middle of nowhere. There’s a train connecting the airport to the city that takes 45 minutes. Tickets are $9 and are valid for rides on local public transport as well.

If you do happen to be on a road trip in Colorado, there are 3 major interstate highways that run through Denver – I-70 from Utah to Kansas , I-25 from Wyoming to New Mexico and I-76 , which starts in Denver and continues onto I-80 in Nebraska . All of these highways skirt the city center of Denver and are easy to access.

Interstate buses aka Greyhounds use the same aforementioned highways and ply them daily. Bus travel times can be quite long in this part of the USA so be prepared for long hauls.

Denver is the halfway point for the gorgeous Starlight train route that runs from San Francisco to Chicago. Those who are seeing the states from the seat of a train should definitely stop off in Denver. Likewise, those visiting Denver should consider catching this train to California or Illinois.

Getting Around Denver

Denver has a fairly extensive and efficient public transport system. Between the many trams, buses, and trains you can get just about anywhere in the city. The only caveat is that you need time to do so.

Because Denver is so spread out, commuting via public transit can take a little longer than expected. What may take 10 minutes by car could take 45 minutes by bus due to long distances and route changes. The system is still fairly comprehensive and you can get pretty far with public transport, for example to Golden or Boulder, so we aren’t complaining too much.

You can certainly walk around individual neighborhoods but we do not recommend walking around the entire city. Again, because of its size, getting around Denver can take a while and this means you’ll spend a lot of your time getting from point A to B if you just stick to walking.

Biking is the real way to get around Denver. Unlike the nearby Rocky Mountains, Denver is about as flat as flat can get. (There are two “hills” that may give bikers problems – Highlands and Cap Hill.) This means you can zip around the city without worrying about pulling a hammy or burning out on a 30-degree incline.

Denver is very car-centric and there are only a few official bike lanes in the city. You can use these if you like or brave some of the actual streets. Just be sure to go fast enough, know the proper rules of the road, and, for God’s sake, wear a helmet.

There is a fleet of taxis in Denver, although they usually stick to the Downtown area. Uber and Lyft are ubiquitous and somewhat affordable.

Try using a local car share or scooter-share apps like Car2Go or Lime . Both are everywhere, much to the ire of the locals.

Let’s be honest–working in the USA is impossible unless you’re a green card holder or a citizen. And getting deported is definitely NOT something you want in your travel history. Volunteer opportunities in Denver are possible, though these will be unpaid and instead provide a free hostel stay or something similar.

The digital nomad scene is minimal in Denver, like most other US cities. You can definitely get online work done–Wifi and data signals are strong virtually everywhere.

If you would like to go the volunteering route though, I recommend you do so with a reputable company. The Broke Backpacker recommends Worldpackers as an easy-to-use and reputable platform. Denver has a surprisingly active nightlife and certainly swings above its weight class when compared to some other larger US cities. There are tons of things to do at night in Denver in multiple parts of the city. Whether or not you’re a raver, kickbacker, or socialite, there’s something for you to do in Denver at night.

There are several nightlife districts in Denver, the most well-known being Highlands, RiNO, Downtown, and Broadway.

Capital Hill, Colfax, and Midtown have good bars but they’re not as exciting as the aforementioned.

Downtown is where most of the ritzy lounges and affluent bars are located. These are mostly frequented by the business crowds and rich tourists, which may or may not be your thing.

Regardless, there are definitely a couple of solid bars worth visiting like Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox, Union Lodge 1, and Sidecar Lounge. These tend to attract a more diverse crowd.

Broadway is where you’ll find the majority of Denver’s nightclubs. Temple is currently ranked as the #1 club in Denver, but Church, Vinyl, and Milk are all worth visiting too. Denver nightclubs are very musically-driven and most host a special DJ or band on the weekends (with a cover charge, always).

RiNo and Highlands are two of the hippest neighborhoods in town and these both offer similar types of parties. They excel in what we call “high dives” i.e. lowbrow bars that have a little bit of glamor to them.

These districts have been pretty laid back in the past but are becoming busier at an alarming rate. Check out local favorites like Finn’s Manor, Matchbox, Meadowlark, and Lustre in RiNo, and then Highland’s Forest Room 5, My Mother’s Bar, and Ale House.

Dining in Denver

The Denver culinary scene is a somewhat divisive issue. While the city benefits from some very fresh and local ingredients, which are prepared expertly by adept chefs, there is not much in the way of culinary diversity.

Most Denver restaurants offer the same old American fare, like burgers and steaks, and only a handful are really pushing the boundaries.

With a relatively two-dimensional immigrant population as well – Latin Americans are in the overwhelming majority – there isn’t much in the way of ethnic food in Denver.

Denver has some of the best meat in the country. Beef is, of course, top quality but the lamb is especially good. There are also a number of special game meats in Denver like elk, bison, and fowl, thanks in part to the state’s love for hunting. Just be mindful of Rocky Mountain Oysters – these are deep-fried bull testicles!

As we mentioned before, there isn’t really a whole lot in the way of international foods in Denver. Italian is well-represented with Coperta, Italia, and DiFranco’s all getting nods. On that note, the pizza in Denver is quite special as well – Cart Driver and Marco’s are both worthy of visiting.

Mexican food is very popular in Denver due to its large Mexican population. All of the usual Mexi-American dishes are here including burritos, tacos, and whatnot, but the torta is particularly well-loved in this city.

There is a food cart outside of Meadowlark on the weekends that serves my favorite Mexican food in Denver. Otherwise, most of the cantinas are located up and down Colfax.

I would like to preface this section by saying the food is getting better in Denver. Certain establishments, like Acorn, Beckon, and beast + bottle, among others, are definitely leading the way to a brighter culinary future; the overall scene just has a ways to go.

Cheap Eats in Denver

Eating out in Denver doesn’t have to break the bank! Here are some of the best cheap eats in the city:

• Tocabe : Not only is Tocabe affordable but it’s also one of the ONLY places in the United States where you can try traditional Native American food!
• Denver Biscuit Company : Love biscuits? Savor a massive biscuit sandwich–of which there are 10 to choose from–from one of the numerous Denver locations! It’s a budget friendly and filling lunch option.
• The Cherry Cricket : Enjoy one of their massive sandwiches or burgers for around $10, or taste The Cherry Cricket’s legendary pork green chili for around $6!
• Illegal Pete’s : This local Mexican chain serves up massive helping of burritos, bowls and salads with far more topping options than national chains like Chipotle!
• Steuben’s : For cheap eats with a sit-down restaurant vibe, head to local fave Steuben’s which makes delicious comfort food at great prices and portion sizes.
• Bourbon Grill : A classic chicken shack, you can enjoy grilled or blackened meat with rice/and or bread. They also have some pretty solid sides too!

Denver contains a wealth of unknown and surprising things. Here’s the part where I highlight a few things that may have been overlooked earlier but are still massively fun and engaging parts of a trip to Denver.

How to Get Off The Beaten Path in Denver

No matter how off-beat of a traveler you are, there are always popular tourist attractions that are worth your time! In Denver’s case, Red Rocks and City Park are two of my favorites. But of course: the city has so much more to offer if you just know where to look.

If you have more time, or if you just want to see a side of Denver most don’t get to, it won’t be very hard to get off the beaten path here in the Mile High City. Plus, there’s even more to do if you include nearby locales in the Denver area.

For one, you can visit the eclectic International Church of Cannabis for an elevated spiritual experience. Or spend a day perusing through the Learned Lemur , which is filled with animal skulls and other oddities.

For some seriously unique experiences, you can also spend an afternoon at the Denver Flotation Center or the local oxygen bar to replenish what your missing!

You need at least 3 days to properly tour Denver. Whilst you can definitely see the main sights in 2, that 3rd day is important if you want to head out on any of the amazing day trips around Denver or go to a show at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre. 3 days will also give you a good amount of flexibility and make sure your time isn’t too crowded!

Is Denver Good for Tourists?

Denver is an excellent city for tourists and receives tens of millions of visitors each year. In the winter, many people use it as a base for some of the awesome skiing that opens up in the area, and in the summer, warmth brings the usual hoard of sun-soaking/holiday-taking troops for a foray into Colorado. The mountains, attractions, and walkability of the city make it an excellent tourist destination.

And just like that, we’ve come to the end of this Denver travel guide. This mountainous Colorado city is in a category all its own. Downtown Denver will give you all the feels of a big city, while the numerous spacious parks will whisk you away to a natural setting.

Travel Guide: Things To Do In Denver, CO

H i loves! There are so many things to do in Denver, CO, I couldn’t resist heading here for my 24th birthday. From the windy city of Chicago , I wanted to go somewhere completely different. Somewhere that is not a city, not another country, but a place I can vacation and relax. My friends and I decided to leave Friday night and come back Monday morning. Now I know it’s not a typical time frame, but I found traveling is something we enjoy even if it is for a couple of days.

Also most of us work full-time jobs as well, so it made it harder to fully plan a whole week. Where to find a ticket? Well now that was easy with Spirit and we actually found a roundtrip for only $97.00! Yes 97! Crazy, I know! But Spirit has amazing deals and if you can plan in advance you’ll find tickets for an amazing price. Plus we heard from many people that there are so many things to do in Denver, we were all intrigued.

Arriving to Colorado

We stayed at the Renaissance Denver Stapleton Hotel , which is such an amazing hotel with a great staff. We informed them of our late arrival on Friday and they had no problem accommodating us. The hotel was clean, in a great location, and affordable. Check out their website because the photos and rooms are the same in person. Now, getting around in Denver and with our itinerary we knew we would have to rent a car out for this trip. Thankfully Hertz was super helpful! We actually saved a large car because we were 6 people total beforehand and somehow during all of reservation with my employer a mix up occurred.

It was late when we arrived into Denver and we just wanted to sleep, but the associate helped us out and we ended up with an Infiniti QX80, which is huge and literally a top of the line car for a great deal. The Hertz representative made everything easy and it was so nice and it didn’t even cost us a ton. From the airport to the hotel it was about a 25-minute drive and to downtown Denver from the hotel about 20 minutes as well. So now what things to do in Denver, you ask? Let’s begin!

Time to Hike

Saturday was here. We all decided instead of exploring Denver, we’d all get up super early and drive about an hour and a half to Colorado Springs. Another reason we opted to rent a car! Colorado Springs has so much to offer, check out their site for your future plans. We decided to visit the parks and all the nature touristy things we could fit in to the day.

First we drove to Pike’s Peak Cog Railway , which is a train station that will take you directly to Pike’s Peak. The train ticket is about $40.00 per adult and you can buy ahead of time. Also you want to check out their site to know the times the train leaves so you don’t have to waste a lot of time. They usually past every hour and twenty minutes.

Here you’ll find a view like no other and be about 14,100 feet above sea level. The train lets you see many incredible views along the way and if you have the time, of course, you can always opt to climb the trail to Pike’s Peak yourself. Just make sure you pack a jacket in case, because at the top it is freezing and in the middle of September the Peak felt like 10 degrees! There is a little café at the top, where you can find some pretty amazing doughnuts, hot chocolate, and most importantly water. Also just be aware of the altitude, you’re steady climbing up the mountain but you do feel your ears pop.

Things To Do In Denver, Co: Seven Falls

After feeling like you were on top of the world, the next place we drove to was the Seven Falls which is another spectacular view Colorado Springs has to offer. When we arrived there are signs everywhere to direct you where to go park and then you take a trolley, around the town which holds some very grand houses and hotels, and it drops you off the entrance of the Falls. You do have to purchase a ticket to enter, which is about $14.00, then your next adventure begins.

Here there is a lot of walking and stairs to climb so just make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes and ready for it or if you’re like me, have patience for other people in your party when climbing the stairs and being in that elevation. It’s not a joke, it’s like over 200 steep stairs to climb and not everyone is accustomed to climbing a lot, being in that elevation or the heights. The sites you’ll see however make all that walking and climbing THAT much better!

The Garden of the Gods

Our final stop of the day was to the Garden of the Gods.  We planned to do this last because we were losing daylight and wanted to catch the sunset here. Plus this park closes at 11pm. I recommend catching the sunset here because the view of the town and mountains is truly breathtaking. The Garden of the Gods park is free to visit and walk around.

Here is where you’ll see the beauty of the red rocks. See the natural beauty the city has done so well to maintain. Probably the most important is the view you’ll experience. You’ll look over the city and see all the mountains in the distance and forest. It is truly an incredible experience.

All 6 of us actually found a cute spot and just stared out at the mountains for a couple of minutes lost in our thoughts. We did take photos but none did it justice. This is a place you just have to experience for yourself. There is a lot of trails to take and exploring you can do on your own, you can truly just get lost in the beauty nature has to offer here. Again, make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes to walk around a lot in and shoes that are good for climbing rocks.

We arrived back to our hotel and changed quickly to go explore some mere. Things to do in Denver are endless but the food… that’s my groups favorite part. The downtown area is super cute, filled with lights throughout the streets, hotels grand and beautiful. We ate at Rock Bottom, which is a brewery with amazing beer and food. The location is great, price is affordable and the beer, oh the beer, is quite amazing.

Mile High Stadium

Our last day in Colorado we used to visit a friend and have fun in the city. One of the things to do in Denver is catch a game! We bought tickets to the Denver Broncos vs. Indianapolis Colts game because I’m a huge football fan and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit Sports Authority Field . This stadium is unique because it is the highest stadium in all the National Football League in terms of altitude.  Your body doesn’t adjust to being so high up and many opponents think it’s an advantage to the Broncos because since the visiting team isn’t adjusted to living so high up it can wear on your body.

We sat in like the nosebleeds, but boy was the atmosphere rocking! Due to the time change we left early morning to brunch and watch the earlier games, we were eating right in front of Coors Field (Home of the Colorado Rockies) in a cute place called Tavern . The food was amazing, the bottomless mimosas even better and they kept coming, our waitress never let our glasses go empty. We left our car at our friend’s place nearby and took an Uber to the stadium since we were drinking and it was like a 10 minute drive.

After the game we met up at our friend’s house again to grab our car and head to dinner in another hot spot in the Lodo part of Denver called Rio Grande . The Rio Grande has amazing Mexican food and our waitress was just beyond phenomenal, she actually used to live in Florida and once she found out it was birthday, brought me a shot of tequila. Which was the best shot I’ve ever had of tequila, I might add. The staff was so sweet, amazing and genuinely caring. If you’re looking for a hotspot in Denver to eat, go here! Trust me.

I must warn you though make sure you hydrate yourself. Everyone kept telling us to drink water even if we were not thirsty, but we thought we knew better. We thought the altitude wouldn’t get to us. The second day there we literally felt the altitude everyone describes. We just were not used to being so high above sea level, considering South Florida is almost at sea level. It was an adjustment. Next time we know to stay hydrated. But it didn’t deter us from having fun and enjoying ourselves.

To Wrap It Up

Colorado was just the trip we needed. There are endless things to do in Denver and I recommend getting a car. Yes, it had the excitement of being in a city. The craziness of the dedicated sport fans and amazing locals. Most importantly I found an unknown sense of peace and relaxation I never knew I needed. Exploring mother nature and seeing the scenery was so breathtaking. Driving on our own and figuring out the directions was fun too.

We got to see a different side to our traveling, the not so glamorous part. The part of guiding ourselves on the roads and making sure we get to the right exit but that’s where we saw the beauty. Colorado was an amazing way to celebrate my birthday! We all got much closer to mother nature and learned to appreciate it in a different way.

Go to Colorado. Visit Colorado Springs. Catch a game at “Mile High Stadium.” Grab a couple of beers with the locals. There’s so many thing to do in Denver and see that you will never want to leave. If you have ever been to Colorado, let me know what your favorite place was. Mine had to be Pike’s Peak, because I literally felt like I was on top of the world.

Travel | a weekend guide in ouray, the country’s no. 1 vacation destination of 2024, men’s journal ranked ouray no. 1 out of 50 u.s. vacation destinations this year.

My birthday is close to Memorial Day weekend every year, and I like to take advantage of the long weekend by checking a town off of my Colorado travel list.

In years past, my friends and I have soaked up the San Juan Mountain views in the warmth of the Pagosa hot springs and gone whitewater rafting in Class 4 rapids down the Royal Gorge in Cañon City. This year, we’re planning on sandboarding through Great Sand Dunes National Park.

But it was my trip to Ouray in 2022 that still has me in pure awe. The mountain town is tucked in a valley surrounded by the San Juan Mountain Range and lives up to its “Switzerland of America” nickname. It takes roughly 5 1/2 hours to get there from Denver.

This month, Men’s Journal named Ouray the No. 1 vacation destination in the U.S. out of 50 on its 2024 list — for good reason.

Here’s a quick guide to my Ouray vacation for your reference, before the out-of-state tourists start crowding the humble mountain streets:

Where to stay: We booked Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs on the edge of town. Our room in the old-school lodge was small but affordable, and we weren’t spending much time inside anyway. When it rained, we warmed up in the red cedar tubs that are fed by mineral hot springs water.

Where to eat: We fueled up on coffee and chocolate croissants from Artisan Bakery & Cafe , watching topless, bright yellow tour Jeeps whiz down Main Street. We caught the golden hour (when only the peaks of the mountains are shrouded in sun) with some beers on the rooftop of Ouray Brewery . Then, for my birthday dinner, we celebrated with espresso martinis followed by braised short ribs and whipped Yukon potatoes at Brickhouse 737 .

What to do: Our hotel was a quick walk away from Box Cañon Falls Park , where I highly recommend getting misted by a 285-foot waterfall plummeting into the quartzite canyon.

For summer visitors, horseback riding should be a top priority. We booked a two-hour ride in Ridgway, just down the road from Ouray, with Action Adventures Guide Outfitter . Riding through the aspen tree forests, creeks and alongside Ouray’s colorful landscape was an absolute dream.

If your legs need a break from all the nearby hiking trails, take a drive down the Million Dollar Highway . Not for the faint of heart, the 25-mile-long road winds around mountain and gorge views of all different hues of red, orange, blue and green. There’s also a “Switzerland of America” lookout point for a photo op.

On your way home, make a pit stop at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park , an hour outside of town. The steep look into the gorge, which I likened to the Grand Canyon’s little sister, reminds you just how small you are in this big world.
