Beach Packing List: 75 Essentials For Everyone & Every Trip

* This article contains affiliate links, which help run this site at no extra cost to you.

Take the stress out of packing with my ultimate beach packing list for your next beach day or tropical vacation.

Looking for a free beach packing list? I’ve got you covered.

You’re probably looking forward to your upcoming beach time and relaxation.

But your level of zen may waver based on the type of beach you’re heading to, the length of your beach trip, how many people are joining you…and so forth.

One way to guarantee relaxation is to make a sufficient beach packing list.

I’ve gone on my fair share of beach trips and beach vacations, and I’ve always felt that I prepared well.

So, I put together the ultimate beach packing list that will have you covered for what to bring to the beach in any circumstance.

My packing list for beach vacations serves as a to-do list ahead of your trip.

Gathering all the beach necessities before your next beach vacation will make your beach days that much more leisurely.

Whether these items are a given or something you haven’t considered before, check off each one that’s applicable to you and your needs!

Here’s my printable beach packing list based on my experience at beaches from North Carolina to Italy.

A young couple cuddles and laughs as they sit on a blue and white polka-dotted blanket on the sand, with several bags, a travel chessboard, and a water bottle spread out around them.

What Should I Bring on a Beach Day Trip?

Of course, my beach day packing list is shorter than my entire beach vacation checklist.

That being said, there are certain things to bring to the beach no matter how long you plan to stay. Let’s talk about the components of any essential beach packing list.

Sun Protection

A pair of blue tents pitched on a sparsely-populated beach, with beach grass in the foreground.

First and foremost: don’t forget sun protection. Wear sunscreen , sunglasses , and a cute sun hat .

Wearing sunscreen is important for protecting your skin from sun exposure and sunburns.

Some form of sunblock should be the first thing in your beach bag.

I burn easily, so I always opt for a rub-in lotion over a spray or mist. Coral Isles is my go-to reef-safe sunscreen– I want to do all that I can to protect our coral reefs from bleaching.

Reef-safe sunscreens don’t contain coral-damaging chemicals like oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens.

Along with sunscreen, I throw in small items like SPF lip balm and hand sanitizer.

Note: Remember to account for the travel size requirements if you’re traveling via airplane (less than or equal to 100 ml/3.4 oz in volume). Otherwise, you’ll need to make a pit stop once you’ve arrived at your special beach destination.

Drinking Water

A hand holds a pink water bottle against a light brown backpack with an overcast beach in soft-focus in the background.

If there’s anything I want you to take away from what you should bring to the beach, it’s sunscreen and a water bottle.

We talked about protecting your skin with sunscreen. Now it’s time for water.

Having water on hand combats a variety of potential problems, like dehydration and heat exhaustion.

Staying hydrated also helps you recover from long hours in the sun and keeps your skin hydrated.

The hot sun does make it hard to keep your water cold, but it’s important to drink from your water bottle, no matter the temperature.

Luckily, you can keep water cold with an insulated reusable water bottle like a Hydroflask or Cirkul Bottle .

Remember to bring an extra bottle of water and a dish if your dog is coming along for the adventure!

My Secret Tips

A woman in a blue and white sleeveless sundress walking with her feet in the water on the beach with the Golden Gate Bridge behind her.

I try to learn from my previous vacations. Here are a few of my secret items that I carry:

If you wear contacts like me, bring an extra pair. You never know if one will get messed up while swimming (been there, dealt with that).

Hair Protection

I also color my hair, so a heat protection spray that protects hair from sun damage is a great idea. It also helps keep the color in good condition.

Speaking of spray–I always bring bug spray . Sometimes bugs or gnats surprise you on the beach and come out of nowhere…I’m personally not a fan.

On that note, research what wildlife might be at the beach you’re going to.

Sting Swabs

I recently found out you can purchase insect sting swabs .

This would have been helpful when my friend got stung by a jellyfish during one of our beach trips in North Carolina…or when I was stung by a bee in New Hampshire.

I’m sensitive to the sun, and sunscreen wears off. I always bring a rash guard to prevent burning when I’m in and out of the water.

Water Shoes

I also bring water shoes if I’m going to a rocky beach. Bruises from pointy stones are painful, and I get unbalanced trying to tiptoe across the rocks.

Portable Speaker

Everyone loves the person who remembers their portable speaker .

Reusable Bags

Pack snacks using reusable bags –after all, we’re trying to keep this beach clean!

Choosing Your Perfect Beach Bag

A woman seen from a distance, walking on a sparsely-populated beach, carrying five tote bags.

Okay, we’ve talked about a handful of helpful beach items–but as you probably realize, there are plenty more. Consider how you want to transport them all…

Help yourself out by choosing a big beach bag with lots of space.

I like carry-all totes that I can drop everything into. This tote , in particular, is perfect. It has a classic striped pattern and outer pockets to keep your sandals.

I recommend backpacks if you’re bringing a beach chair or larger beach items because of the hands-free carrying.

When it comes to keeping your items dry inside that bag, you have a variety of options.

Sometimes, I use a waterproof phone case that I can take straight into the water for underwater videos.

But other times, I put my cell phone and important belongings into a dry bag . Then, I take pictures with a waterproof camera like a GoPro .

You know yourself best–maybe you need all of the precautions: a waterproof phone case and a dry bag!

Curious about dry bags? Read our guide to the best dry bags for kayaking and the best waterproof duffel bags .

How Do You Pack for 7 Days at the Beach?

A woman in a magenta one-piece swimsuit seen from behind looking out over a low stone wall at the turquoise waters of a tropical beach.

A seven-day beach vacation packing list requires more planning and thought, but it doesn’t have to be daunting.

My beach packing list for a week of fun is more comprehensive than my normal beach packing list.

Instead of daytime necessities, now we’re talking about changes of clothes and outfits suitable for sunrise beach walks and seaside dinners.

Planning ahead instead of tossing stuff into a bag on Friday night makes each day that much better.

Consider what you want your setup to look like–do you prefer beach chairs, or are you okay with sitting on a beach blanket for multiple days?

When I head somewhere for an extended stay, I take all the beach gear, from items I’ll need on the beach to after-sun products.

I take everything that is normally in my beach bag, plus larger items like chairs , a snack table , an umbrella , and a cooler .

After all, there’s nothing like napping in comfortable beach chairs under the shade of a beach umbrella.

If you’re going on an extended beach vacation, it’s a good idea to bring at least one swimsuit cover-up .

A bathing suit and flip-flops are suitable for the beach itself, but cover-ups and a change of clothes are more appropriate if you’re heading to any other activity or a restaurant for dinner.

I know– clothes take up extra space in your beach bag or carry-on…but wet clothes feel heavy and cold when you’re not on the beach.

Plus, bringing a cover-up or change of clothes with you means you don’t need to rely on going back to the hotel room to change.

Pre-Trip Double-Check

Before leaving home, I do one last check of the beach essentials. A beach weekend away or seven-day stay is the perfect time to restock.

If the sunscreen is empty, buy a new one. Same with sting swabs, lip balm, and anything else that runs out.

Right before a big trip is also the best time to upgrade things like ice chests, beach chairs, and towels .

Maybe you can even spring for a cute new swimsuit or snorkel for the kids.

How Do I Not Overpack on a Beach Vacation?

A group of five people seen from behind, walking on the beach towards the water, overloaded with bags and gear.

As an over-preparer who always wants to have everything on hand, I know how much of a challenge it can be to pack light.

Ultimately, you will have to weigh what matters most to you.

Items like sunscreen and water are necessary. Bathing suits, towels, and lightweight clothing are a given as well.

I try to help myself save space by bringing travel-size creams, shower products, and medicine.

Items like a beach chair are a bonus, but many of us beach lovers are content with beach blankets.

While I prefer a plush beach towel, sometimes I’ll take a thin microfiber sand-resistant beach towel to save room.

Also, factor in what type of beach you’re going to.

Sure, a rocky beach is usually sand-free, but you’ll probably need water shoes slim enough to fit in your beach bag or (carry-on if you’re flying there).

These little things are easy to overlook, so help yourself out by planning ahead of time.

Is There Anything You Should Add to the Packing List for Your Beach Vacation with Family?

A POV shot of a hand holding a kindle displaying the first page of a book, a pair of legs lounging on a beach chair and a beach in soft-focus visible beyond.

My beach packing list for family trips includes the essentials of any day at the beach but supersized.

After all, you’ll have more hands to help carry things like a beach umbrella or beach cooler.

All-inclusive resorts or a fully stocked vacation rental will provide beach towels.

If it’s easy and you have the space, throw an extra cheap pair of flip-flops or sunglasses in your beach bag.

I found that on a family beach vacation, someone always loses a shoe or steals their sibling’s pair…

I’d also plan on either one communal wet swimsuit bag or having each person bring their own. No one wants to get stuck carrying a wet swimsuit without a waterproof bag, let alone multiple.

Always keep additional sun protection in mind.

If you’re heading for the beach with multiple family members, a bottle of sunscreen is going to run out much faster than you may expect (speaking from experience).

Aaaaand aloe vera. I know from my own family beach trips that some of my family members were convinced they wouldn’t get sunburnt.

Then, I was always the one handing over the tube of aloe vera when they showed up red later that day…

Depending on the ages of your family members, consider bringing beach toys or an underwater camera.

No matter what age you are, in-person entertainment is better than scrolling on your cell phone, which could overheat.

And remember, everyone has different interests!

I’m personally not a huge fan of water sports or searching for marine life, so you probably won’t find me with snorkel gear on.

You’ll find me on the beach blanket with a book .

However, I have family members who love playing beach tennis and skidding into the surf with boogie boards–so I make sure to think through everyone’s interests when making a family beach vacation packing list.

What Should You Put on the Beach Packing List for a Couple?

A couple laughs as they sit facing each other on a beach blanket, sharing a bottle of champagne and a take-out pizza, with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.

The key to packing for a couple’s beach trip is turning up the romance and showing your partner that you know what they like.

That being said, if you are going on a couple’s beach vacation, consider bringing specific items related to your relationship.

Maybe you and your partner enjoy the same type of beverage or share a favorite beach pastime (e.g. volleyball , bocce, reading, portable board game).

Find little ways to feel connected to one another! Share one large beach blanket instead of two individual beach towels.

Talk through the packing list with your partner ahead of your trip so you can focus on each other once at your romantic beach destinations.

Double-check that you’re both packing appropriate clothes for your activities.

This is especially important if you’re going on a honeymoon or celebrating an anniversary with a nice dinner.

Some restaurants may have a dress code where sandy flip-flops won’t fly.

You can also surprise them with a new accessory to use on your beach trip, like a hat or cover-up. Or go the homemade route by coordinating a beach picnic.

If nothing else, set aside time for a long walk up and down the shore.

What Do You Need on the Beach Packing List for a Toddler?

A tropical beach crowded with beach umbrellas seen from above in late-afternoon sunlight.

Your beach trip packing list with a baby or toddler is going to look similar to your family beach vacation packing list

Here are additional beach essentials for toddlers:

Keep toddlers occupied for hours with a sand castle set . Just make sure there are enough mini shovels for everyone.

No one enjoys hot sand that burns your feet, especially toddlers. To avoid the fuss, ensure they have shoes or water shoes on (if you can get them to keep the shoes on, that is).

Kid’s Sunscreen

The last thing you’ll want is for your toddler to get a sunburn, so make sure to wear sunscreen that’s 50 SPF or higher.

I suggest sunblock sticks (shaped like lip balm) for easy application if your toddler is fussy.

Get them a kids’ sun hat . Once again, it may or may not be hard to get them to keep it on, but you’ll be grateful to have it.

Rash Guards

Rash guards are an extra level of protection. They also help if you’re heading somewhere with slightly cold water.

First Aid Kit

Because we all know how clumsy toddlers can be, bringing a first aid kit will be a good idea.

Waterproof Bandaids

Maybe bring waterproof bandaids as well because the standard kits will likely have regular ones inside.

Spill-Proof Cup

On that clumsy note–make sure to bring a spill-proof cup for your toddler. Fresh water is valuable when far from the nearest beach stand or your accommodation.

The commotion of a beach day with kids will make it all too easy for an open cup to be knocked over.

Bring floaties for safety if you plan on playing in the water. Toss them in the bag even if you don’t plan on taking them into the waves.

Water wing floaties are flat to pack, quick to inflate, and add peace of mind.

Make sure to have snacks for toddlers or kids. You can never go wrong with granola bars and juice boxes.

Just make sure to have some form of trash container with you for all the snack wrappers.

There you go–all the beach essentials you’ll need for your next beach vacation. Grab your flip-flops and beach towel. It’s time for some sun!

Complete Beach Trip Packing List for the Perfect Vacation

girl in bikini laying on palm tree by Caribbean Sea - beach trip packing list

This post may contain affiliate links, meaning if you buy or book through one of these links, I may earn a small commission .

Trying to simplify the packing process for your next beach vacation, but fear forgetting something important?  I’ve definitely been there too, which is why I’ve created an intensely thorough beach trip packing list. The below packing guide will ensure you remember all the necessities, so you can focus on planning and enjoying your getaway.

For beach trips, I like to keep my packing fairly minimal, since the main objective is to relax in beautiful surroundings. After lots of trial and error, I’ve basically got my list of beach essentials down pat. My list below includes things I always use on beach trips, whether it’s an absolute necessity or something I just like to have on hand.

This list should help you stay organized, and help your mind stay clear so your don’t miss anything. My hubby and I have had a couple instances where someone forgot something major, like swimwear or a passport. It’s easier to forget these items than you would think when running last minute errands before departure.

With that, here is the complete beach trip packing list, which lists every item you won’t want to leave home without. That way you can do less scrambling, and more lounging among the palm trees!

The Ultimate Beach Trip Packing List

Beach packing list: the essentials.

View of Bahamas Islands and surrounding turquoise waters from airplane

These are the very important items you literally cannot travel without, especially if you are flying. Keep these necessities with you in your personal item on the plane for easy access, rather than in a checked bag. That way, if checked luggage gets lost you’ll at least be able to enter your destination and make new purchases, if necessary.

  • Driver’s license (if flying, you’ll need REAL ID beginning May 3, 2023)
  • Passport if traveling internationally
  • Boarding Pass (be sure it reflects TSA PreCheck if you have it)
  • Masks if traveling by plane (TSA mandate)
  • Credit Cards (I like to bring one Visa and one Mastercard if traveling internationally)
  • Cash if traveling somewhere remote, like an island ($100 to $200)
  • Proof of vaccine/test results where required. For some destinations you cannot even board the plane without these items.
  • Check your destination for any other required paperwork, such as passenger locator forms

Beach Trip Clothing

Girl looking out over Coral Bay in St John USVI - beach trip packing list

Beach clothes are usually easy to fit into a carry-on, since t-shirts and shorts don’t take up much space. Also, as many beach destinations keep things casual, there is less of a need for outfit changes or dressing up for dinner.

For nicer outfits, consider how many times you’ll actually need to dress up. Will you eat at a fancy restaurant more than once or twice?

The weather forecast will also affect what you’ll need to bring. If there will be some cooler rainy days or chilly nights, you may want a light sweatshirt to stay warm. Alternatively, for hot sticky weather, it’s likely you’ll want to change out of sweaty day time clothes before heading out for the evening.

With that, here is the approximate amount of clothing I recommend bringing for a 7-day beach trip.

  • 2-3 swimsuits
  • Sun shirt (I love these lightweight tops for when my shoulders have gotten enough sun for the day)
  • Swimsuit Cover-up (females)
  • 2 pairs of athletic shorts, in case you get around to working out or hiking
  • 8-10 pairs of socks
  • 8-10 pairs of underwear
  • Clothes to sleep in for seven nights. I personally bring 1-2 pairs of pajama shorts and 7 ribbed tank tops.
  • Light sweatshirt for cooler night temperatures
  • 2 bralettes (females)
  • 2 sports bras (females)
  • 1 regular bra (females)
  • 8 tops (mixture of casual and dressy)
  • 2 pairs of casual shorts (I bring one denim and one white pair)
  • 1-2 nicer outfits
  • Jewelry (I like to bring one or two necklaces.  Just be careful with any valuables you choose to bring)

If you are staying somewhere with a washer and dryer, you can bring less clothing and save even more carry-on space. For a one week stay, I’d cut socks and underwear down to 5 pairs, pajamas for 4 nights, and 6-7 casual tops.

Footwear for Your Beach Trip

Usually footwear needed at the beach is pretty minimal. However, if you plan to do a lot of walking or hiking, you’ll want to be prepared. Nothing like blisters or arch pain to ruin an otherwise perfect vacation.

  • Sandals/flip-flops

The next three items are for people like me who get foot pain:

  • Shoe inserts (I bring custom orthotics)
  • Foot Braces (for nighttime)
  • Golf ball for rolling foot (sometimes my arches get tight and grumpy if I do a lot of walking)

Why Carry-On Only?

This packing list is geared towards travelers doing carry-on only, i.e. no checked bags. I prefer this method when traveling to harder to reach places, like the Caribbean islands. For example, it can be difficult to lug a bunch of baggage from the airport to a taxi, then to a ferry, and finally onto another taxi or rental car.

Keeping your belongings to one suitcase helps the experience stay much less stressful and laborious. Plus, if you bring less, that’s less items you could potentially lose.

That said, if you are road-tripping or checking a bag, there are definitely perks. You’ll be able to fit more of the below in your luggage and won’t need to purchase as much at your destination.

Personal Care Items for Every Beach Trip Packing List

Reef safe sunscreen for a beach trip packing list

Below are all the essentials you’ll need for personal care throughout your trip. If flying, you will be limited to a 1-quart bag with up to 3.4 oz. of each liquid, gel, or aerosol you want to bring.

To comply with this, I use small reusable containers for shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. However, if you aren’t picky, a lot of hotels and vacation rentals provide these items for free. For things like face wash and shave gel, I try to find tiny samples for purchase from stores like Target and Sephora.

If you are driving or checking a bag, you can basically pack whatever you want, but I still recommend minimizing what you carry. After all, baggage can get pretty heavy with a bunch of full containers from home. That said, you can largely disregard my below categorizations since you’ll be able to pack whatever amounts you please.

Pack in Your Carry-on:

  • Comb (I prefer wide-toothed )
  • Cotton Balls
  • Chapstick ( preferably with spf )
  • Pads/tampons (females)
  • Makeup remover wipes (if bringing makeup)

Pack in a Separate 1-Quart Liquids Bag:

  • Moisturizer
  • Conditioner
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Shave gel (I find a squeeze tube like this one fits more easily into a liquids bag)

If it is difficult to squeeze all this into a small 1-quart bag, see if you can share some items with people you are traveling with. If this is not possible, I’d leave behind the hairspray and hand sanitizer, and simply style my hair less and wash my hands more often.

Buy at Your Destination:

  • Sunscreen for face and body (some places require reef-safe varieties )
  • Aloe vera in case of sunburn
  • Anti-itch cream for potential mosquito bites if you’re prone like me

Remember any Medications

Remember to include any medications you take daily on your packing list in order to stay well during your beach trip. I’ve also listed a few preventative items you’ll want to bring, just in case. I know I’ve had my fair share of headaches, blisters, and cuts pop up while on vacation.

  • Prescription meds
  • Advil or other pain reliever
  • Vitamins to keep your immunity high while traveling

Electronics You’ll Want at the Beach

Even though a beach vacation is all about unplugging, chances are there are a few electronics you’ll want to have on hand. Below are the ones I always have on my beach trip packing list.

  • Cell phone/charger
  • Hair wand for beachy waves.  However, leave the hair straightener at home. In humid tropical climates your hair will frizz as soon as you step outside.
  • Hair dryer (only if the place you’re staying at doesn’t have one, and they often do)
  • Camera bag (camera, lenses, chargers).  I use the Sony a6000 and love it.
  • Kindle /charger
  • Ipad/charger + download shows for trip
  • GoPro /charger – these are fun for active trips, especially for underwater pictures and videos
  • Bluetooth speaker for music. Here’s my beach playlist to get you started!
  • Portable charger – Amazing to have on hand in case your phone dies while out and about. My husband and I use these all the time.

Other Beach Packing List Necessities

Reading a book at a resort on the Caribbean Sea

This catch-all category features other miscellaneous items you may find useful for a beach trip. These are definitely things we are always glad to have!

  • Global Entry Card – This comes in handy when traveling internationally for avoiding long customs lines.
  • Beach Bag – I resisted purchasing a beach bag for years, instead carrying my belongings in my arms, and shoving what I could into my husband’s bookbag. I finally made the investment, and it makes the biggest difference!
  • Consider pre-downloading offline Google Maps. That way if you lose cell service, you can still easily navigate around your destination.
  • Paper printout or phone screenshot of instructions for accessing your vacation rental or hotel
  • Paper printout or phone screenshot of tickets for any tours or excursions
  • Books if you don’t have a Kindle
  • Sanitizing wipes if traveling by plane. It’s gross how infrequently they actually clean those seats.
  • Copy of passport. If you are traveling overseas, it’s good to have a backup in case your passport gets lost or stolen.
  • Pen – you never know when you may need one!
  • Nail clippers – it is incredibly annoying to have a hang nail on vacation with no way of fixing it.
  • Tissues – handy to have in a plane, rental car, or other public transportation.
  • Tervis cups/lids for having drinks at the beach

Travel Savvy Tip

If you are a lady traveling alone, you may want to consider bringing a small purse to carry your money, keys, phone, etc.

I learned this the hard way in Charleston . After a beautiful morning at the Isle of Palms, I was exploring downtown with my mom and lost my wallet! Unfortunately, my small wallet sleeve had fallen out of the flimsy pockets of my stylish, but not so functional shorts.

My mom bought me a cute tiny purse with a shoulder strap after this experience, which I used every day on my first solo trip .

Items to Leave Off Your Beach Packing List

It’s always best to avoid packing extra items you don’t need.  Many hotels and vacation rentals provide certain necessities that you shouldn’t have to worry about packing.

  • Beach towels – Towels can be very bulky, so be sure they are absolutely necessary before claiming that precious luggage space.
  • Snorkel Gear – If you don’t already have your own, there is no need to run out and buy snorkel gear.  Many places provide these items either for free or to rent.
  • Cooler – I’d only bring your own cooler if you’re driving to your beach destination.

That should cover every single item you’ll need on your beach trip packing list. Now, your mind can be freed up for more awesome things, like planning a super fun day trip for your vacation.

I believe I’ve covered it all, but let me know in the comments if I’ve missed anything!

A comprehensive guide to all the necessities to include on your beach trip packing list. From cute beach outfits to carry on essentials, you'll have all you need from your suitcase to your beach bag. That way you can focus on planning the ultimate beach vacation.

What to Pack for a Beach Vacation

Below you’ll find a tried and true list of what to pack for a beach vacation from the must-have essentials to items that will make your beach getaway even better than expected. Check out the video at the bottom of this article for some need-to-know travel tips from our editors. There’s one specific travel hack that will keep you organized and neat throughout your entire trip.

Beach Essentials

Bathing suits.

Whether you plan on exploring the low-key beach town, lounging in the sun or snorkeling for the day, be sure to pack a bathing suit, like this Trina Turk tropical one piece , on your beach vacation. Wear what you feel the most comfortable in, and be sure to pack some extras. No one likes putting on a wet suit!

Beach cover-up

For running back to the hotel room, grabbing a quick beach-side bite or just to protect your skin from the sun’s rays, a beach cover-up allows you to have some quick coverage. This simple Billabong Women’s Lovechild Cover Up is both effortlessly chic and effective at shielding your skin from especially sunny days. A favorite among men is this Columbia PFG Bahama II Long Sleeve Shirt , it’s both breathable, light and the material has UV protection, great for fishing trips and long beach days.

Squinting in the sun is no fun! Make sure sunglasses are at the top of your beach vacation packing list. We recommend not toting your most valuable designer shades at the beach because sand and salt water can damage sunglasses. Bring along a cheap but stylish pair of shades for practical eye protection from the sun. These SOJOS Classic Aviator Mirrored Flat Lens Sunglasses are stylish and won’t break the bank, meaning you don’t have to worry if you drop them in the sand or lose them at sea.

Choose from a baseball hat or a big floppy sun hat. These accessories can be both stylish and practical, acting as a shield from the sun’s strong rays. For the best protection, pack a hat that shades your face, chest and shoulders. Make a statement with this fun embroidered sun hat .

Beach towel

Many hotels or resorts will supply beach towels. Check in advance that you’ll have access to beach towels at the pool before your trip to avoid over packing.

Don’t use your favorite purse or bag to tote your beach items back and forth! Opt for a large bag made especially for the beach, this one has compartments for all of your storage needs. You can find lots of cute and fun options that will prevent you from finding sand in your day-to-day bag for years to come.

Sandals/Flip flops

Ever put on soggy sneakers or shoes filled with sand? Avoid this beach faux pas by packing beach appropriate sandals or flip flops. The most practical options are easily washable, allowing you to hose off any unwanted sand after a long beach day, these Reef Fanning Mens Sandals are perfect for men, and they have a quirky bottle opener attached for those refreshing beach-side beverages.

Water bottle

Stay hydrated in the sun, but also stay eco-conscious. Add a reusable water bottle to your beach vacation packing list so you can just refill and be ready to go. Healthy Human creates a range of insulated stainless steel water bottles that stay cold for up to 24 hours!

Sunscreen/Sunblock

Apply and reapply SPF any time you are out and about to avoid skin damage and sun burn. Be sure to check rules and regulations for sunscreen and sunblock in your destination as many beach cities are ruling out harmful SPFs to protect the environment. Stream2Sea specializes in biodegradable sunscreen products that won’t harm the ocean.

Chapped lips? Keep your lips soft and smooth, even after hours on the beach. The sun, sea breeze and salt water can take a toll on your perfect pout. Pack a moisturizing lip balm with SPF to protect your smile. We recommend Sun Bum’s SPF 30 Lip Balm .

Aloe vera/After-sun lotion

So you’ve spent a little too much time in the sun? We’ve all been there! Be sure to bring along aloe vera to reduce the redness and sooth irritated skin. NaturSense makes an organic after-sun gel that soothes skin from all types of irritants from sun burn to razor bumps.

Insect repellent

In any tropical destination, there are often pests. Whether it be at dusk or on certain excursions, you’ll be grateful for a spritz of this bug spray .

Disposable wipes

On hot days, you’ll appreciate some refreshing cleansing wipes. These Biodegradable disposable wipes by GoodWipes are made with soothing tea tree and aloe, perfect for any mid-afternoon clean up.

Baby powder

Beach travel hack right here! Baby powder is a go-to for beach goers who want to remove the unwanted sand from their bodies, without rubbing their skin raw with a beach towel. Simply sprinkle on some Johnson’s Baby Powder , and the sand brushes right off.

Safety/Flotation devices (if needed)

You’ll probably want to float in the ocean at some point during your beach vacation. Get in on the giant swan floatie Instagram craze with Swimline’s Giant Inflatable Swan Pool Float . As always, we recommend that you never leave children unattended and never fall asleep on an unsecured raft.

As we’ve mentioned, beach clothing goes beyond just the beach. At the bare minimum, you’ll want to have a few things to wear for your time spent off the sand. This includes any cover-ups for quick jaunts away from your towel or a loose-fitting sundress to wear at restaurants or in town. We also included a few necessary garments for sun-protection and, of course, what you’ll wear to ride the waves. When choosing clothing for a beach vacation, you’ll want to stick to fast-drying, breathable, and lightweight materials that can be comfortably worn in hot temperatures. When it comes to hats, the ability to pack down, hold shape, and provide shade are key factors.

Best Wrap Skirt

Venus short crochet wrap skirt.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that this flattering skirt doesn’t have the scratchy texture that plagues many sarongs with a similarly lacy look. It strikes the perfect balance between stretch and compression to make you feel secure while still being soft and flexible. And with a breezy feel and just a hint of skin underneath, it’s the perfect thing to throw on when you want to leave your spot on the sand to grab a smoothie or hit boardwalk shops.

Best Set for Women

Wild rye lucy party shirt.

This breezy button-up pairs with a flowy, equally whimsical pair of Wild Rye shorts that are perfect to throw on for an aprés-pool cocktail or morning breakfast on your oceanside terrace . Breathable, moisture-wicking material also makes this set a great choice for active days during your getaway.

Best Set for Men

Chubbies performance polo.

Pair this breezy, moisture-wicking polo with the Chubbies Classic Swim Trunk for an effortless resort-wear look. The brand has no shortage of charming prints and colors to choose from, and the stretchy, UPF 50+-rated top also makes a great golf shirt .

Best Sundress

Angashion spaghetti strap midi dress.

A spaghetti strap sundress is practically staple beach-vacation attire. It’s a great way to elevate your beach look without having to put too much effort in. The Angashion Summer Bohemian Spaghetti Strap Midi Dress has faux-buttons and a midi length that make it appear more formal than it is (in reality, you can just slip it on over your head and you’re ready to go). With 37 different colors and patterns to choose from, you can pack a few of these in your suitcase and be set for a drink at the beach bar or a night out on the town. Plus, it’s got pockets.

Best Swimsuit Cover-up

Bishuige beach cover-up.

An ideal swimsuit cover-up can be thrown on in a pinch and will cover you up enough to walk through a casual restaurant without getting stares. This T-shirt-style cover-up dress is made from a rayon and spandex blend, making it extra breathable, bouncy, and breezy. The crew neck and A-line cut are flattering while still providing solid coverage, and we, of course, love the hidden pockets. Depending on your body, this dress will hit just above your knee or higher. It comes in over 40 colors and patterns and sizes that range from S to 3XL.

Best One-piece Swimsuit

Andie the amalfi.

  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Coverage 5 /5

With tons of fit, texture, and color options, Andie’s signature suit is about as one-size-fits-all as swimwear can get. You can customize bottom coverage, torso length, and the length of the straps. Removable padding in the built-in bra gives you even more opportunity to achieve the perfect fit. Color options are wide-ranging, but we’re particularly fond of the cherry red — a classic shade for beach bombshells.

Best Bikini

Becca by rebecca virtue jolene halter bikini top.

Everything But Water

If you’re a two-piece person, pack this equally stylish and functional bikini from Becca. It provides plenty of support with padded cups and adjustable criss-cross straps in the back, and it has just the right amount of compression for our taste.

Best Swim Trunks

Vuori banks short.

Our favorite swim trunks are just as comfortable as they are practical. A zippered pocket, drawstring waist, and four-way stretch are the perfect combination for beach-day convenience. The California-based brand uses recycled materials that don’t skimp on durability or softness.

Shoes can be the trickiest thing to pack when heading out on a beach vacation . It’s a no-brainer that you’ll want a pair of sandals or flip-flops that can easily slide off and on and shield the bottoms of your feet from hot sand, but you’ll also want to consider versatile shoes that can be worn at the beach, on the rocks, in the surf, and out on the town. Choose lightweight materials that will survive getting wet and will dry fast when they do. Look for an adjustable, snug fit that won’t slip off in the sand. And don’t overlook durability, as the last thing you want is to be spending your beach vacation searching for a replacement shoe.

Best Flip-flops for Women

Clarks breeze sea flip flop.

  • Support 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

These game-changing flip-flops blew us away when it came to comfort. An adjustable velcro strap ensures a perfect fit, and the buttery smooth footbed feels wonderful against sun-kissed skin. For long walks around surfside shops, a thick, absorbent sole provides plenty of support to prevent any aches and pains that’d disturb your hours of relaxation in the sun. Meanwhile, superb traction kept us steady on our feet when we tested these on slippery poolside ground.

Best Flip-flops for men

Adidas comfort flip-flops.

Marrying a plush footbed with a supportive sole, these lightweight flip-flops cradled our feet just right during testing. Despite the flexible feel, the Adidas Comfort Flip-flops have a durable construction that will get you through countless getaways to come, and the brand’s classic striped look fits in in any beach town .

Best Waterproof Sandals for Women

Sanuk cosmic waves h20 sandal.

  • Cushioning 4.5 /5
  • Responsiveness 4.8 /5
  • Stability 5 /5

For footwear variety beyond a trusty pair of flip-flops, add these water-friendly sandals to your packing list. They’re among the most comfortable sandals we’ve ever tested, and you’ll find the just-right arch support, shock absorption, and delightfully textured footbed keeps you comfortable through all your beach-vacation adventures. They’re also super lightweight, so they won’t add to stress about luggage weight limits .

Best Waterproof Sandals for Men

Bedrock sandals women's cairn adventure sandals.

  • Performance 5 /5

For an active beach vacation that includes everything from water sports to tropical hikes, you can’t go wrong with the Carin Adventure Sandals. All-day-and-night comfort took these unisex shoes to the top of our hiking sandals test. Harsh terrain and slippery surfaces are no match for the foolproof traction and cushioned sole.

Must-haves for a beach vacation include a solid sunscreen, and we also recommend always packing a reef-safe sunscreen, just in case your destination doesn’t have any readily available (or charges an arm and a leg for it). Some of these items can be omitted, like the personal beach canopy, if you know you’ll have cabanas or shade available to you. But it never hurts to pack a decent tote or beach backpack and top-notch necessities like an insulated water bottle, UV-blocking sunglasses, a waterproof cell phone case, a sand-proof towel, or insect bite control. And, even beautiful beaches get boring, so why not bring along a portable beach game, too?

Best Sunscreen

Biore uv aqua rich watery sunscreen.

  • Transfer 5 /5
  • Opacity 5 /5
  • Water Resistance 5 /5

We love how effortlessly this translucent sunscreen blends into our skin. The clear look and watery texture also mean there’s no white residue transfer to ruin your stylish swimsuits.

Best Reef-safe Sunscreen

Hawaiian tropic mineral sun milk body lotion spf 50.

  • Water Resistance 4 /5

Reef-safe sunscreen shields you from the sun’s harmful rays without risking the health of coral reefs . Our favorite is this lotion from Hawaiian Tropic, which features a delicious smell that will take you right back to beach life long after you’ve returned to the office.

Best Sunglasses for Women

Eleventh hour essential polarized sunglasses.

Eleventh Hour

  • Appearance 4.5 /5
  • Value 4.8 /5

Despite a near-weightless feel, these sunglasses pack a lot of style into their sturdy-yet-flexible frames. We find the slight cat-eye look accentuates most face shapes. Protection from UVA and UVB rays also make these sunnies everyone can love.

Best Sunglasses for Men

Raen aren polarized sunglasses.

  • Appearance 5 /5
  • Value 4.7 /5

Our favorite sunglasses for men come from Raen. They earned a perfect score in our sunglasses testing , and you’ll see why as soon as you get your hands on the sturdy, stylish, and comfortable frames.

Best Bite and Sting Control

Bite away insect sting & itch relief stick.

Trips to tropical beaches can often mean you’ll be around tropical insects. While you may not have to worry about stings and bites while you’re on the sand, the magical hours of sunrise and sunset can be an issue. The Bite Away wand uses heat to instantly stop your bites from itching and stings from, well, stinging — without chemicals, sticky residue, or smells. It’s ideal to slip into your beach bag or keep at the ready in your hotel room. No, it doesn’t prevent bites or stings, but it is pretty darn good at making it seem like they never happened.

Best Waterproof Phone Case

Joto universal pouch.

  • Waterproofing 5 /5
  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Phone Usability 4.5 /5

The Joto Universal Waterproof Phone Pouch gives you a lot of bang for your buck. Since it works with practically all types of phones, you won’t have to worry about re-purchasing if you get a new one, and you can easily hand it off to different members of your group as needed. The stuff-and-seal mechanism protects your phone up to 100 feet deep, so you can use it for boat days, snorkeling trips , and floats. The convenient neck strap means you can keep tabs on it easily. Plus, you can still (usually) use your touchscreen thanks to the pouch's dual-sided clear window design.

Best Cooler

Clevermade collapsible cooler bag.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Insulation 4 /5
  • Maneuverability 4 /5
  • Durability 4.5 /5

Keep your drinks and snacks chilled in the Clevermade Collapsible Cooler Bag. This cooler bag can hold 50 12-ounces cans plus ice and keep them cold for hours. It’s ideal for packing in your beach vacation bags since it’s fully collapsible and won’t take up much space in your suitcase. It breaks down flat with a zippered closure for easy storage. The pop-up design takes seconds to set up, and the bag feels sturdy with its board base and wire-rimmed top. The front zippered pocket can hold (and hide) a cell phone or other slim items, and you don’t have to worry about having a bottle opener on hand since there’s one built into the handle.

Best Beach Tote

Bluboon waterproof beach tote.

This machine-washable beach tote is more than just a bag to toss a few beach essentials in: It comes loaded with pockets for easy organization. Four exterior pockets can hold everything from water bottles and sunscreen to flip-flops and reading materials, while the main zippered pocket is large enough to hold a couple of towels, your cover-up, and a change of clothes. There are also slip pockets inside the main pocket for smaller items such as keys and cell phones. An additional side zippered compartment is waterproof and can hold wet swimsuits or towels. It comes in 12 different colors and designs, making it easier to find one that fits your style and personality.

Best Canopy

Pacific breeze easy setup beach tent.

  • Portability 5 /5

Long days at the beach call for some respite in the shade. Packing a collapsible beach canopy is a must for shade breaks and cover from dangerous UV rays. This tent was the easiest to set up out of all the beach canopies we tested. Five fillable sandbag pockets to ground it, which is key on windy days. Thoughtful details like a mesh pocket for holding sunscreen, cell phones, and other small items make this beach tent stand out.

Best Beach Towel

Coyuchi mediterranean organic towel.

  • Quality 4.9 /5
  • Absorbency 5 /5
  • Texture 5 /5
  • Durability 4.4 /5
  • Dry Time 5 /5

You’ll have a hard time getting off this luxurious offering from Coyuchi. It has all the things you love about Turkish towels, including a light, slim build for packing, plus an incredibly soft feel that we haven’t stopped raving about since first testing it.

Best Beach Game

Outside inside backpack bocce.

We love a good beach vacation as much as the next travelers, but sometimes you need a little more entertainment than a good book. Bocce is a great beach game to pack since it’s family-friendly and can be played with as little as two players or with large teams. This portable Outside Inside Backpack Bocce set has nine 1.75-inch waterproof and sandproof PVC balls in four colors and comes with a convenient 5.5 x 5.5-inch carrying case that can easily be packed in your suitcase and tossed in your beach bag.

Best Water Bottle

Hydro flask wide-mouth bottle with flex cap.

It’s important to stay hydrated while you’re spending time in the sun, and a concession stand isn’t always a given at the beach. Get ahead of the thirst game by packing your own reusable water bottle and filling it up before you hit the sand. The Hydro Flask Wide-mouth Bottle with Flex Cap gives you up to 24-hour ice retention so you can gulp down cold drinks, even if you stay all day in the sun. A stainless steel body makes it sturdy enough to toss in your beach bag, or just carry it via the flexible top handle.

Best Face Sunscreen

Summer fridays shadedrops spf 30 mineral milk sunscreen.

  • Feel 4.8 /5
  • Removal 5 /5

Be sure to protect your face from harmful UVA and UVB rays as you head to the beach with this lightweight sunscreen. During T+L testing, this face sunscreen was our absolute favorite for not only protecting our skin, but also for leaving it with a nice glowy sheen that's still light enough that you can wear your sweatproof makeup on top without feeling goopy or greasy. At 1.7 ounces per bottle, you can easily stick this sunscreen in any carry-on or personal item, so you don't skip skincare during your beach vacation. If you are planted firmly in the no-makeup camp or just want another option, we also recommend tinted moisturizers for light coverage.

Best Dry Bag

Earth pak earth pak waterproof dry bag.

Courtesy of Amazon

This foolproof dry bag has gotten us through years of water sports. If your beach getaway is going to include boating or any type of splash zone, bringing one along is a wise choice. It comes with an easy-to-use, roll-top closure and sizes ranging from 5 to 55 liters. We love the vibrant yellow and blue, but there are tons of color options including black, white, and clear.

Best Power Bank

Blavor solar power bank.

For a power reserve you can count on all day long, grab this durable charger from Blavor. We’re impressed by how quickly this small solar panel soaks up power even when in the shade. It has USB-C input and output ports as well as wireless charging capabilities.

Best Cup Holder

Home queen beach cup holder.

A nifty little device you never knew you needed, this cup holder will save your seltzers and electronic ports from dreaded sand invasions. Simply drive it into the sand for a safe place to keep track of your phone and drinks, and then pack it up into itself when it’s time for post-beach activities.

If something is water-resistant, it means that it can hold up to water exposure up to a certain depth and/or length of time. When something is waterproof, it is completely impervious to water exposure.

The amount of things you’ll need on a weeklong trip depends on the type of activities you plan on doing and whether you’ll have access to a washer-dryer. Packing pieces that can be mix-and-matched will help save space, and this includes versatile shoes. For a beach vacation, you’ll likely want to bring at least three swimsuits or swim trunks if you’re planning to go in the water several days on your trip.

Throw in clothes, add detergent (or a spoonful of dishwashing liquid), and shake or let soak for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Wring clothes out with a towel to speed up drying. This is the easiest way to wash clothes on the road – hotel, hostel, or wherever – without hogging an entire sink. Plus, the dry bag comes in handy for adventures and protecting your laptop in storms.” – ABrotherAbroad

How to Do Laundry on Vacation

Packing Tip #2: Migrate to One Cable

“All in all, I went from seven different charging cables (or battery) to  just a single one.  All devices are at least an upgrade from the previous one, with some offering a  major  upgrade. The devices include:

  • Action Camera
  • Mirrorless Camera
  • Bluetooth Earphones
  • Portable Battery
  • Portable Storage
  • Bluetooth Keyboard
  • Bluetooth Mouse
  • Wireless Charger
  • Travel Adapter
  • Flashlight/Headlamp
  • Electric Razor/Beard Trimmer

13 devices  that make use [of] the same type of cable

I can charge all devices from a single power adapter that offers three USB-A outputs and 1 USB-C output but it never happens – at worst I have to charge two at the same time as most devices have a fast charge.” – MarcusForrest

Packing Tip #3: Pack Like You Can’t Buy Anything for 24hrs

“What would you want/need? Personally, I’ve lost track of the number of endless bus rides, delayed flights, power outages, and rental car breakdowns I’ve had to deal with. I wouldn’t carry a huge first aid kit, but I would absolutely carry a mini-bottle of Advil and a roll of antacids. I carry a Vapur bottle that I fill and use all the time. I usually have a Cliff bar in my bag somewhere.” – Hakote

Packing Tip #4: Fabrics Are Your Friends

“Always pack at least one quick-dry outfit. Ideally, pack ALL quick-dry items. Nothing you take should require more than 12 hours to dry.” – Hakote

“In my opinion, the combination of merino and bamboo is really nice. Makes the merino stronger, softer and airy. I tend to sweat in it less and just like the feel. My favorite shirt of last year was a Pally’Hi with 60 percent merino and 40 percent bamboo. There is a discussion going on that the bamboo origin doesn’t really matter since it is merely the source for the cellulose to create viscose (meaning things that are often called modal or bamboo are simply viscose) but there is a difference in the way the fibers are treated after spinning. Which means that with a better-quality viscose you get a stronger and lighter fiber.” – ormagon_89

“Invest in at least one item of merino wool. T-shirt, socks, underwear, or button-up shirt. Merino is a game-changer for packing light. They are wrinkle-resistant, and don’t smell after wearing it multiple days.” – GeoffMeetsWorld

Packing Tip #5: Make a Decoy Wallet

beach trip packing list reddit

“I always pack a fancy looking wallet with a 20 Euro bill and old credit cards. If somebody mugs me that’s what I give them.” – inthenameofmine

Packing Tip #6: Have a Travel Drawer at Home

“I travel enough for work and often with so little notice that I have a ‘Travel Drawer’, with my pre-packed toiletry bag, a pouch with charging cables and other handy stuff, and a packing cube with leggings, a t-shirt, and some socks and underwear in it. I basically corralled that stuff together because on a couple of occasions I had to ask my boyfriend to grab my stuff and meet me at work or the airport, and it was easier to say ‘grab the stuff from the travel drawer’ than to give him a full packing list … Eventually, I added a document folder to that drawer with my passport, social security card, some cash, and other stuff.” – Hakote

Packing Tip #7: Swap Your Liquid Toiletries for Bars

beach trip packing list reddit

“I use the Neogen green-tea face stick when I travel as a joint face/body wash. It comes in a tube-like a large stick of lip balm, it’s easy to use with or without a washrag, and it lasts forever. It’s also very affordable and doesn’t count as a liquid for TSA purposes. I use one in my gym bag as well.” – violtetviceroy

“I just bought my first Lush shampoo bar and love it, but plan [on] buying a bar of dr. Bronner’s for my body. I personally love the tea tree one, and both bars will fit in my stainless-steel soapbox.  Someone else mentioned their soap turning to mush; I don’t store my soap in the shower and keep the box on the outside edge so water doesn’t get in it, or place it outside of the watered-down area right after using it and it stays together fine.” –bohemianmarie

Packing Tip #8: Rolling vs. Folding

“Folding lacks organization unless I put them in packing cubes. Ranger roll is too finicky and doesn’t save me any space. The bundle method is ok for wrinkles but is a pain for getting individual items out. It would work better for me in situations where I stay in one place for longer periods of time, I.e. long enough to unpack and live out of a dresser/closet instead of my suitcase. I think my new go-to might be a combination of rolling with rubber bands or hair ties and packing cubes or clear bags.” – katmndoo

The Best Packing Cubes Ever

Packing Tip #9: The One Item That Surprised Even Us … The Linen Towel

beach trip packing list reddit

“As for linen itself, I greatly prefer my towels to both cotton and also to the microfiber camping towel I used before my linen towel. It’s not as soft as a plush cotton towel but it dries me well, dries itself quickly, and folds down much smaller. Linen is also supposed to be much more durable than cotton although I can’t say I ever wore out a cotton towel.” – chackoc

How to Pack a Suitcase: The Ultimate Guide

“Basically, this thing folds up so thin, doesn’t take much space, and most importantly dries up quickly (ie. no bad smell). I tried the microfiber quick-dry towel, and they were not quick-drying, especially in humid weather. They also smell really horrible if not dried properly, and I could never get used to the grippiness of the towel. The only drawback I say for the linen towel is the price and that you have to get used to the roughness initially. After a few uses, the roughness will be gone and it will become smooth.” – polarium

20 Things You Should Pack for an All Inclusive Vacation

Share with your friends!

You’ve booked your holiday and the countdown officially begins to hot weather, sand between your toes and pool-side margaritas.

Whether you’re headed to Mexico or somewhere else in Caribbean, you’re going to have an incredible week (or two).

While your resort will provide everything you need for some rest & relaxation, there are a few things you should bring from home to make your holiday perfect and a little cheaper, too (those resort shops are crazy expensive).

Here are my top tips about what to pack for an all inclusive resort vacation.

Headed on a cruise in the Caribbean?

A lot of these items would be applicable to bringing on a cruise as well.

Still undecided about where you’re headed?

Not sure if an all inclusive is a good deal?

Read my thoughts on whether they are worth it based on your travel style.

This tropical vacation packing list will help you:

  • make sure you haven’t forgotten anything ;
  • potentially save you money by avoiding having to buy items at the resort shops;
  • not over pack and haul around more than you need!

This post contains affiliate links. If you click through and make a purchase, I may make a commission at no extra cost to you. I only share products that I have used, love and trust.

A Beach Bag as Your Personal Item

Water Resistant Travel Tote Bag (for the beach, pool & plane)

This bag comes in 35 colors & patterns, and is water resistant - perfect for the beach & pool. It fits perfectly under the seat in the airplane and packs down flat when you don't need it.

Make your carry on luggage work double duty!

Instead of a large purse, pack a beach bag as your personal item you can fit under the seat on the plane.

This way you’ll have a beach bag to use at the resort to bring your items (sunscreen, book, camera) down to the pool or beach.

Plus, beach bags can hold quite a bit and can squish down easily to fit under the seat in the plane.

Recommended: this tote style beach bag. Comes in 30+ colors, is water proof and fits perfectly under the seat in the plane.

Or this brown tote that I used, featured in my YouTube video.

What to Pack in Your Carry On

beach trip packing list reddit

When making my packing list for Mexico resort, I always start with items to bring in my carry-on.

In my carry on (link to the exact bag I use ), I pack a swimsuit, at least one or 2 beach outfits and sandals (and more if I have the room).

This is way more important/necessary if you have a connecting flight, as your chances for luggage getting lost or delayed is much higher than a direct flight.

How much would it suck to not have your own swim suit and beach wear for a day or 2 before your luggage finally shows up.

I learned this the hard way!

But – even if your flight is direct, chances are you will be flying from a place much cooler than your beach destination.

Packing cubes make it so easy to pack an outfit in your carry-on, and keep it separate from everything else.

I use this set of 8 cubes (different sizes) to organize my suitcase, and leave out one of the smaller cubes to keep my airplane outfit organized.

If you’re like me, you pack a BUNCH of things in your bag – having your outfit packed neatly in a cube allows you to easily grab it without riffling through everything.

Pack Items to Change into on the Plane

Just before the plane starts its descent I like to change into shorts or a summer dress.

Because as soon as you get off the plane the heat and humidity hits you like a brick wall!

I love this casual dress (comes in tons of colors and patterns) that’s easy to pack and can be dressed up or down once you’re at the resort.

You don’t want to be stuck wearing jeans or leggings in the hot & humid customs line!

I use this carry on roller bag every time I fly.

But this tote bag is super cute if you want a smaller carry on.

Travel Duffel Bag, Sports Tote Gym Bag, Shoulder Weekender Overnight Bag for Women

This is my number one travel bag. It's small enough for your second carry-on item (fits under the seat) but large enough to fit enough for a weekend trip. It has an internal wet pocket if you need to travel with a wet swim suit!

If you have a strict weight limit for your carry-on luggage on your airline, here are my top 7 carry-on bags UNDER 6 pounds (3kgs) tested on multiple airlines.

Clothing Checklist for an All Inclusive Resort

1. beach cover up.

a woman standing in front of a pool wearing a light beige dress

Swimsuits are obvious, but I usually bring at least one beach cover up.

These are great for when you need to run back to your room to grab something.

Or, if you’re taking a break from the pool and going to grab some lunch buffet or a snack.

Recommended: this boho chic cover up

It’s one size fits all and so comfy! It also comes in 18 other colors!

P.S. – I loved my sandals in the photo above. They were comfy enough to wear by the pool and walking around the resort all day, but dressy enough to wear in the evening.

2. Evening Wear

beach trip packing list reddit

Evening dinners at the all inclusive resorts are the best!

Depending which resort you’re staying at, there are always a few choices between casual dining and some options that are more upscale.

There are usually dress codes in place for evening wear at all inclusive resorts.

Plan to pack at least 2 or 3 outfits for this.

A couple of nice beach dresses or skirts will do, or some shorts that you can dress up with a nice top.

Need more outfit ideas? Check my Amazon Storefront for some inspo!

Men will usually need a shirt with a collar to get into the restaurants for dinner.

Definitely no tank tops or muscle shirts. And bring at least one pair of long pants.

If you’re staying at an adult only resort or a luxury property (like Secrets or Sandals), this will be a must.

Some other resorts will allow men to wear shorts but as long as a collared shirt and close toed shoes are worn.

beach trip packing list reddit

3. Active Wear

If you’re planning to do an excursion or two on your trip, bring an outfit that you can comfortably move in.

Good walking shoes, active shorts and a comfortable tank top or t-shirt.

4. A Rash Guard

a women sitting in a pool wearing a long sleeve blue shirt

Every all inclusive resort packing list should include a rash guard with SPF .

This is something that I will never leave home without when heading out on a beach vacation.

I learned this the hard way after my first time visiting Huatulco .

What usually happens on any all inclusive vacation is you spend the first day in the pool soaking up the sun.

But then you get sunburned. Bad.

And then, the next 2 or 3 days suck because you’re spending all your time in the shade.

Wearing a rash guard allows you to still hang out in the pool even if you have gotten a little red.

This is why you will notice every all inclusive resort has these for sale in their shops.

But the price tags are usually somewhere between $50-100.

Plus, if you’re planning to do any boogie boarding or surfing, rash guards are a must have.

It also saves you from having to reapply sunscreen all day long!

Pack one with you or grab this rash guard from Amazon for much cheaper.

And it comes in over 20 different colors and patterns!

5. The Right Hat

woman in a beach hat in front of a pool in a tropical destination

This is the best selling beach hat on Amazon! It's big enough to protect you from the sun, but small enough that it doesn't get in the way - you can also squish it down to pack away and it doesn't get flattened.

And the last piece of ‘clothing’ is always a hat.

I love my big floppy hat, and these are great for hanging out by the pool.

But if you’re going to be spending more time on the beach, it gets windy – and big floppy hats aren’t the best.

Same with when you’re on a cruise, it’s windy!

For something perfectly in between a big floppy hat and a fedora, try this wide brimmed hat that comes in a ton of colors.

Sun Hats for Men

beach trip packing list reddit

Guys need a hat too!

My husband packs two hats for his all inclusive vacation.

He loves his bucket hat because it’s small and can fold down into nothing (they’re also so popular right now).

And he also brings a wide-brimmed hat when it’s extra hot out when he needs a little more sun protection.

Recommended: this sun hat with mesh that’s ultra breathable.

6. Two Pairs of Sunglasses

I also brought 3 pairs of these sunglasses with me!

a couple in a pool in a tropical destination

I like bringing these $20 sunglasses just in case anything happens to them.

They came in handy on this last trip because my husband actually lost his Ray Bans somewhere on the beach.

And these one are unisex and look great on any face shape.

I liked the black ones, brown ones and pink mirrored ones because they’re fun for the pool.

They’re also polarized which is a must-have if you’re by the water all day (whether it’s pool or ocean).

Polarized Sunglasses for Women Vintage Retro Round Mirrored Lens

These are the perfect sunglasses for a beach vacation - I have 3 pairs! Lightweight, polarized and are such a great price.

7. A Travel Jewelry Case

BAGSMART Jewelry Organizer Case Travel Jewelry Storage Bag for Necklace, Earrings, Rings, Bracelet, Soft Pink

Never deal with tangled necklaces again! This compact design is perfect for travel and has so many compartments to keep things organized. It can also double as a case for organizing your charging cords and cables!

Keep all your rings, necklaces and bracelets organized with a travel jewelry case. There’s a couple reasons for this.

Chances are, you’ll probably want to wear a couple of nice pieces out for your evening dinners.

But this will also come in handy for the jewelry you buy on vacation!

Between the beach vendors and the markets that set up at the larger all-inclusive resorts, I always come home from Mexico with at least a necklace and a new ring.

Pack them away safely in your new organizer (instead of jamming them in random zippers in your luggage)!

Recommended: this cute and compact jewelry case .

8. A Swimsuit Wet Bag

Wet Dry Bags Waterproof Reusable with Two Zippered Pockets Travel Beach Pool Daycare Soiled Baby Items Yoga Gym Bag for Swimsuits or Wet Clothes

These are a must for a beach vacation or cruise when you use the pool on the last day before your flight home and your swimsuit is still wet.

I know what you’re thinking – you can just hang your swimsuits out to dry on your room’s balcony.

But a wet bag is a must have for your last day at the resort.

Comes in Handy at the End of Your Trip

On your day of departure you will have to check out from your room around noon even if your flight isn’t leaving until the evening.

The resort will store your bags away for the afternoon while you lounge by the pool and soak up every last bit of sunshine.

Most resorts will have a hospitality suite or a large change room where you can change out of your swimsuit, shower and freshen up before you leave.

Avoid Wet Items in Your Luggage for the Flight Home

This is where the wet bag comes in handy.

You can pack your suits in these waterproof bags and throw it into your luggage and not have to worry about anything else getting damp or smelly on the long flight.

Then, once you’re home you can reuse them for your gym clothes or cloth diapers.

Recommended: these highest rated wet bags on Amazon.

Beach and Poolside Must Haves

As far as a list of things to take to the beach and pool, there are a few items that are a life-saver when it comes to

  • finding loungers;
  • hiding your valuables;
  • keeping your drinks cool; and
  • having fun in the water.

9. Towel Clips/Boca Clips

beach trip packing list reddit

These are something I never would have thought of until actually staying at an all inclusive resort.

If you’re having a pool day, most people head down to the pool early to grab the best spot.

You grab a couple of lounge chairs, lay your towels on them and leave a book and your sunscreen to tell others that these are your loungers.

Then you go grab a coffee or breakfast and come back to your seats later.

But if you bring these towel clips , not only do they secure your towels to your chairs (it does get windy by the ocean after all), you can also easily identify which chairs are yours from all the same hotel towels.

(They come in fun shapes like margaritas, flamingos, flip flips, parrots and more).

They’re also perfect for clipping your wet swim suits to your room balcony to dry out.

Beach Towel Clips/Towel Holders for Beach Chairs - cruise & resort travel

Recommended: something fun like these flamingo ones!

10. An Insulated Cup or Tumbler

Simple Modern 40 oz Tumbler with Handle and Straw Lid | Insulated Cup Reusable Stainless Steel Water Bottle Travel Mug Cupholder Friendly | Gifts for Women Him Her | Trek Collection | Lavender Mist

The perfect Stanley dupe! It comes in 39 colors. Use it for poolside drinks but also to stay hydrated on vacation!

If there is a downside to all inclusive resorts, it’s how much plastic gets used and thrown away from all the free flowing drinks.

Also, ice melts super fast!

If you’re trying to be a responsible traveler , think about bringing your own reusable cup for all your poolside drinks.

Besides reducing the amount of plastic you would otherwise be using, there are couple other reasons why you should consider bringing one.

Depending on what resort you’re staying at, they do serve drinks in glass.

But when you watch them wash the glasses, sometimes you might question how clean they are.

I’ve definitely witnessed poolside bars at their peak busy times, and while they try their best to keep up with clean glasses, you just never know.

If you’re any type of germaphobe, your own glass will keep you happy.

And at the very least, an insulated cup is going to keep your drinks way colder !

Those piña coladas melt super fast in 30 degree sunshine.

Just have your bottled water beside you to rinse it out before you go for a refill, or ask the bartender to do a quick rinse with bottled water.

Recommended: this insulated tumbler (the best Stanley dupe) – it’s affordable (in case you lose it) and holds up to the Stanley and YETI brands.

An insulated tumbler with a reusable straw is the best type of cup to bring to an all inclusive resort.

11. Something to Hide Your Money and Valuables

3-PACK Hair Tie Scrunchies, THE ORIGINAL HIDDEN POCKET SCRUNCHIE with Zipper Pocket Storage, Accessories, Small Items, Keys, Money

Perfect for at the beach, pool, music festivals, clubs or concerts.

All inclusive resorts are generally very safe, but if you have any concerns at all, consider bring a decoy item to hide your stuff!

This is especially important when packing for the busy beaches of Cancun.

It’s not so much of a concern when you’re in the pool and close to your lounge chair, but it’s when you’re in the ocean and further away from your things.

Recommended: I love this scrunchie that has a hidden zipper where you can stash your stuff!

Wear it in your hair, on your wrist or leave it on your beach chair and no one would think twice (also perfect for music festivals and outdoor concerts)!

Water Accessories

12. a waterproof passport protector.

Waterproof Pouch with Waist Strap (2 Pack) | Beach Accessories Best Way to Keep Your Phone and Valuables Safe and Dry | Perfect for Boating Swimming Snorkeling Kayaking Beach Pool Water Park

Keep your passport dry and avoid humidity damage if you're traveling somewhere tropical. You can also use it for your wallet, phone & keys when you want to go swimming but don't have anywhere to leave your items.

This might seem odd, but I will never travel to a warm and humid destination without one of these.

A few years ago I was staying at an all inclusive resort in Mexico and kept my passport in the room safe the entire time.

Avoid Humidity Damage

I didn’t really notice or think about the humidity until I went to renew my passport a few months later.

The passport office almost didn’t accept my passport for renewal because some of the pages had curled from the high humidity from my recent trip to Mexico.

To them, it was considered borderline damage.

And, if your passport is damaged, you have to reapply for a new one (which is a huge pain in the you-know-what).

Thankfully they accepted it in the end, but I’ll never risk that again.

Recommended: this one that doubles as a pouch to hold other small items, too.

13. Your Own Snorkel Gear

Full Face Snorkel Mask with Latest Dry Top System, Foldable 180 Degree Panoramic View Snorkeling Mask with Camera Mount, Safe Breathing & Anti-Fog

If you plan to do any snorkeling on your trip, this 2-in-1 snorkel and mask system works SO much better than the traditional 2-piece snorkel set. Comes in 16 colors and adult & children's sizes.

Many resorts have water activity equipment free for guests to use.

But if you’re interested in snorkeling, I would recommend bringing your own gear.

You just never know how well this stuff gets cleaned.

Plus, Amazon has these game changer snorkel masks .

They’re one piece, have a full face mask that’s way more comfortable than those old school goggles, and there’s an attachment for your GoPro.

14. GoPro Dome Attachment

Dome Port Lens for GoPro Hero 12 11 10 9 Black, Waterproof Housing Case, Trigger, Floating Hand Grip, Built-in Switchable Red Filter and 10x Macro Filter

Speaking of GoPro, if you want to take some next level images, you should get one of these.

You can get some epic half underwater photos with this dome attachment.

It works by moving the waterline away from the lens to allow you to capture both underwater and over water subjects in the same image.

It makes some of the best tropical vacation photo memories if you want to up your game!

Recommended: this one that comes with a floaty hand grip

15. A GoPro or GoPro Alternative

beach trip packing list reddit

This is the #1 rated alternative GoPro camera at a fraction of the price.

And, if you don’t have a GoPro and don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars to get one, you can find this best rated GoPro alternative on Amazon for literally a fraction of the price.

You can grab one with a memory card for well under a hundred bucks.

16. Reef Safe Sunscreen

BLUE LIZARD Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide, SPF 50+, Water Resistant, UVA/UVB Protection with Smart Bottle Technology - Fragrance Free

Not only is this sunscreen safe for reefs and marine life, it's the best choice for those with sensitive skin. The bottle change color when it's exposed to harmful UV rays - a good reminder to reapply.

If you plan on doing any excursions to swim in cenotes or other naturally delicate ecosystems, it is so important to ensure you’re wearing sunscreen that is reef safe.

Many tours even check your bottles before jumping in the water to ensure it complies.

Recommended: this ocean-friendly sunscreen with no toxic ingredients

If you’re only traveling with a carry-on, try a sunscreen stick so that it doesn’t count towards your liquids!

17. Pool Floaties

people on floaties in a pool

You will be the envy of all other resort guests when you bring out your pool floaties!

These water hammocks are the perfect size for your luggage as they pack away so flat.

They have two ‘pillows’ on each joined by mesh in the middle.

They’re less than $20 and are the easiest floaties to inflate and pack away again.

Aqua Original 4-in-1 Monterey Hammock Pool Float & Water Hammock – Multi-Purpose, Inflatable Pool Floats for Adults

The most fun accessory you can pack for your vacation!

18. Pharmacy and Hangover Essentials to Bring When Staying at an All Inclusive Resort

Your all inclusive resort packing list needs to include a few pharmacy essentials from home.

You or someone on your trip will likely experience an upset or unsettled stomach at some point.

Whether it’s from getting used to the food (too much tropical fruit can upset your stomach), or just having too many sugary drinks.

And bring your own pain relievers from home as they’re just too expensive at the resort shops.

Depending on where you’re headed, mosquitoes can be a bother at night.

You won’t notice them in some busier areas like Cancun, but if you’re someone who always seems to get bit, bug repellent wipes are a great idea to pack with you (never have to worry about the bottle leaking).

And if this is your first all inclusive or tropical vacation, you never know how your skin might react to the heat.

Plan to bring a soothing cream to combat itchy red skin from the sun and heat.

Here’s my tropical vacation checklist:

  • Pepto Bismol and Tums
  • Tylenol or Advil
  • Probiotics (start taking them a couple weeks before your trip)
  • Aloe Vera or an After-Sun Stick
  • SPF Chapstick
  • Heat rash cream/calamine lotion

19. Bring Cash for Tipping at the Resort

It’s a good idea to have a bunch of small bills handy for tipping at the resort.

If you go up to the pool bar or lobby bar, tipping one US dollar or 20 pesos (per drink) is a good idea.

That’s minimum and you can always tip more.

If you’re getting drinks brought to you by the pool servers, I usually tip the equivalent of 5 or 10 USD, either 100 or 200 pesos.

That should cover tips for a few drinks and ensure the servers come back to check on you often.

It’s also good practice to tip your housekeeping staff.

Depending on my bill sizes, I’ll either leave small bills each day, or a larger bill every 2 or 3 days.

The most underrated thing you can pack for your all inclusive vacation is a game or a deck of cards!

Most resorts have gorgeous lobbies and lounge areas with sweeping views and comfy seating.

Looking for something to do during happy hour?

Or after you’re done at the pool for the day, but aren’t quite ready for dinner?

Have a drink while you play a game!

I usually bring Mexican Trains – it’s a dominos game that can be played with 2 to 8 players.

It’s quick to learn, fast paced, competitive and keeps everyone engaged!

How to Not Over Pack for Your All Inclusive Vacation

There are definitely things you don’t need to bring so that you can save space in your luggage.

You don’t need towels, as the resort provides these to all guests, and you can exchange them for clean dry ones at any time.

Too Many Shoes

You really only need a couple pairs of flip flops or sandals and maybe one pair of some evening sandals for your dinners.

There are usually a lot of stairs at all inclusive resorts, or if you head into any of the nearby towns or cities, most streets are cobblestone.

I never bring heels, but sometimes a pair of wedges.

Hair Straightener

A hair straightener. If you’re traveling anywhere tropical, it’s going to be super humid.

If you normally straighten your hair, embrace the curls and the salty ocean beach waves!

Bringing too many Clothes

Bring way less clothes than you think you need.

There are so many beach vendors and markets that sell adorable clothes, hats, sunglasses, jewelry and shoes.

And this is one of favorite things about a beach vacation is buy a cute Mexican sundress or something similar.

If you do forget anything, you can always buy it.

More Essential Travel Items That are a Complete Game Changer

As a full-time traveler, there’s a few things that I ALWAYS pack for every trip, not resort trips.

These are my unique items that every traveler should have that may not be obvious, but make travel so much easier.

  • a scarf with a hidden pocket
  • soothing tea bags for the plane

Step-By-Step Packing List for the Ultimate No-Stress Beach Vacation

By Lisa Wells Last Updated: Nov 15, 2023 · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

How to pack for a beach vacation + printable checklist

Ever wondered if you could travel to the beach with just a carry-on? I bet you can. Here's a step-by-step approach that you can use to pack for your next minimalist beach getaway. You'll also find a timeline for when each step needs to be completed, as well as how to pack for a beach vacation in just a carry-on (packing list Included!).

How to pack for a beach vacation + printable checklist

Packing light is always a good idea. It lets you walk straight off the plane, through the airport and make your way directly into that warm sunshine. You can get to the hotel faster and start enjoying your beach time right away.

Holidays are too short. I don't want to waste mine waiting around for my luggage. Traveling carry-on only is the best way to start enjoying my beach vacation the moment I step off the plane.

And if I'm taking a road trip to the beach, packing a smaller suitcase saves enough room in the trunk to fit a portable cooler, my favorite beach chairs and a collapsible beach umbrella. Not to mention room to bring home souvenirs and all the seashells I collected.

While this step-by-step plan may seem like a little bit of work, it's not that much planning when you know what you need to do. And following this simple plan makes it easy to pack all of your beach essentials.

Have I convinced you?

Here's the step-by-step approach for how I travel light to my favorite beach destinations . You'll not only learn how you can travel in just a carry-on, but also when you should start packing and what you'll need to pack for your next beach vacation.

Download your free printable beach packing list here.

And then all that's left to do is go on vacation!

Step 1: Choose your luggage

When: As soon as possible

This is the first (and possibly most important) step in traveling carry-on only to the beach. Your carry-on luggage will make or break you so it's important to carefully consider your options.

Whether or not you've booked your trip, you'll want to double check the size and weight of luggage you're planning on bringing with you against your baggage restrictions. Of course, this isn't absolutely necessary if you're road tripping to the beach, but this is especially important if you're traveling by plane.

Airline carry-on requirements differ depending on a variety of factors (ex. destination, ticket tier, type of plane, etc.). You'll want to know the maximum dimensions and weight on your flight and if your current luggage will fit the bill. Make sure to get this information directly from your flight carrier's website.

If you find yourself without carry-on luggage, here are a couple of recommendations:

If you're traveling on a plane , a soft bag or backpack offers you a little more flexibility when you're traveling. This convertible backpack is a good choice for its flexibility in shifting between a duffle bag and a backpack, as well as its easy-to-organize interior compartments. Typically, soft bags are lighter and easier to fit in the airline luggage check as well as in the overhead bins.

Meanwhile, a structured suitcase is a great option if you're looking for a rolling bag. When you're choosing your luggage just be sure to choose a piece that's smaller than your airline's limit or you risk it not fitting in the luggage check (and could result in you being required to pay for checked luggage at the gate – not ideal!).

If you're not traveling by plane , you typically have a little more flexibility, so choose a bag that suits your travel plans. I've found that traveling with a backpack is easier any time I head out on a beach camping trip or think I might encounter cobblestone roads or walkways.

Step 2: Gather your carry-on packing accessories

While many  carry-on bags have great interior compartments, sometimes you just need a little extra organization in your life. If you're anything like me, you might just find yourself a new favorite travel accessory in these packing cubes .

These handy little organizers have made packing so much easier – I won't pack without them! I like that it's basically like traveling with a mini-dresser. These bag organizers act like drawers – there's no need to unpack and repack (unless you want to). They also keep your items contained, so you'll make better use of your limited space!

You might also want to pick up a slim toiletries bag ( I have this one and love that you can hang it up when you get there to save counter space) and a clear TSA-friendly liquids bag (more on that in Step 3).

Step 3: Prepare your travel size liquids and first aid kit

Of course, this step could be done later in the packing process, but I like having these two pieces pre-packed because it  makes the overall packing experience a little easier. It also makes me feel more confident as I head through security – I know that my liquids won't be dumped because I've taken the time to properly prepare them.

Here are some general guidelines to follow when you're packing your carry-on liquids:

  • Get yourself a bag that's 3-1-1 compliant. (I like this one ). Whichever one you choose, the important thing is it can't be any larger than a quart.
  • All liquid containers must by 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less. Remember, this isn't evaluated by the amount of product in the container but by the size of the container itself.
  • Choose reusable travel containers or travel-size products. Travel-size products are a great idea if you can find your favorite brands and they certainly deliver on the convenience factor. On the other hand, packing your own travel containers allows you to always have your favorite shower and hair products on hand while really only traveling with what you need (I like these ones for soaps and these containers for hair and makeup products).
  • If you're in the mood to try a new product, look for solid product formats. This is another clever way to cut down on the total liquids you're carrying. Why not try a shampoo bar  or a sunscreen stick ?

My liquids bag is always packed for two weeks of travel. When I come home I top up my product containers and I'm ready for the next time I hit the road!

As for my small first aid kit, there's nothing special there. I carry the essentials only – enough to patch up a small cut or battle motion sickness. Despite the simplicity of my kit, I keep this packed and ready to go as well. It's one less thing to worry about as I get ready for my vacation.

Both my liquids and first aid kit packing lists are included in Step 5.

Step 3: Start planning your capsule wardrobe

When:  7-14 days before departure

This is the key step that makes it so much easier to travel with just a carry-on (and I think this is the most fun of all the steps too!). It's time to get to work planning your capsule wardrobe!

If you're unfamiliar with the term, a capsule wardrobe is essentially a mini collection of versatile clothes that mix and match into a bunch of different outfits.

Of course, as you might have guessed, the key here is versatility. My travel capsules for warm weather destinations usually have only 6 to 10 core pieces of clothing plus bathing suit (I bought this one for my last beach trip and love it!), workout gear, underwear, and sleepwear, so it's essential to choose every piece carefully.

How to plan your capsule wardrobe for the beach

As a general guideline, if your beach vacation is less than four days you can travel with six core items. If you're away for 5 to 14 days, you'll be looking at about 10 to 12 core clothing items. Of course, you'll also want to consider the activities you have planned during your trip and whether or not you have access to laundry facilities.

My 6-item capsule for a beach getaway typically includes three tops, two bottoms and one dress that can double as a beach coverup. Assuming that all items go together, I would have at least 7 different outfits to choose from during my trip.

Likewise, my 10-item capsule for a week-long vacation would include five tops, three bottoms, and two dresses. Assuming that all items go together, I would have 18 different outfits to choose from during my time away.

Here are a couple of my favorite tips for planning your capsule wardrobe:

  • Choose one color story and stick with it. Your wardrobe will be made up of neutrals mixed with one accent color. Because I always travel with a scarf, I usually use this as the base for my color story.
  • Every item must mix and match with the other items.  This tip goes hand-in-hand with the color story rule and helps you get the most mileage out of your travel wardrobe. The only reason you should choose a single-use item of clothing is if there's a specific activity or event you need that item for, like a wedding. Even then, you should do your best to choose a piece that does double duty.
  • Easy multi-use items are your friend.  For example, the scarf you wore on the plane can likely also be used as a sarong and a pashmina (if the evenings get cool). A rash guard can double as a shirt or coverup for sun protection. A classic one-piece can work as a tank top.

Many carry-on travelers like to plan their travel capsules using a visual closet app . I don't typically plan my travel wardrobes like this (I prefer a Google spreadsheet), but you might like this approach.

Beach with palm tree

Step 4: Check the long-term weather forecast

When: 7 days before departure

Simple but necessary. In order to feel confident in knowing you're properly prepared, you'll need to know what sort of weather you should expect while you're away.

Are you packing for hot sunny days, cool nights, or rainy season? Check a week ahead of departure for a rough idea of the forecast.

Step 5: Write or print out your packing checklist

So now it's time to actually get packing. I've broken down the general categories and guidelines you're going to want to consider when packing your carry-on. If there's a personal item you can't live without, be sure to add it to your list.

I would recommend getting your list together a minimum of a week in advance. This gives you a little bit of time to grab items that you may not have on hand.

While you may want to skip this step and save it until the night before, I've found that having a written packing list helps me fly through the steps that follow. It also makes the 24 hours before departure a little less stressful. And packing up at the end of the vacation is way easier because I know exactly what I've brought with me, so it's far less likely that I'll leave something behind.

Use this carry-on packing checklist to make sure you don't miss anything the next time you head out for a beach vacation:

These are the things you absolutely should not leave home without. Some of these may not be necessary if you're traveling inside the country, but this should be the base for your essentials list.

  • Boarding pass - I save space by using a digital wallet
  • Itinerary - This also goes in my digital wallet (unless I'm taking a multi-country trip and think I may need to supply it at customs)
  • Immunization records
  • Credit cards
  • Drivers license / alternate form of ID
  • Emergency contact info
  • Travel insurance
  • Passport-size photos (visas) (if necessary)
  • Visa approval (if necessary)
  • Foreign currency (if traveling out of the country)
  • Copies of all the above-mentioned travel documents* - I travel with these stored on a USB thumb drive tucked into my first aid kit

Here's a sketch of what you'll probably need clothing-wise for your beach vacation. By now, you've planned out your capsule wardrobe, so it should just be a matter of packing up your items into your packing cubes.

  • Bottoms x 2-3
  • Dress x 1-2
  • Sleepwear x 1-2
  • Workout wear x 1-2
  • Underwear x 1-10
  • Swimsuit x 2
  • Socks x 1-3 (optional)
  • Outerwear (optional)

You won't need socks unless you're planning on wearing sneakers. And the outerwear is unnecessary unless the forecast looks like you might encounter cool weather (I usually pack a scarf that I can wear as a pashmina just in case).

You're heading to the beach, so you'll probably spend most of your time barefoot in the sand! Only bring what you need. Count on your first pair of sandals as the beach shoes you'll wear for the majority of your trip.

When choosing your second pair, think about the activities you'll be doing on your trip. Fancy dinner? Bring a dressier pair of sandals. Ziplining through Tulum? Bring sneakers. Kayaking? You may need water shoes. Depending on your trip you may be able to get away with only one pair of shoes.

  • Sandals or flip flops - casual for a beach day
  • Second pair of footwear - dressier sandals OR sneakers (if necessary, otherwise skip!)

Accessories

I've actually found myself traveling with fewer accessories since I started traveling carry-on only, but here's what you'll find in my bag:

  • Wide-brimmed sun hat
  • Purse - Day
  • Sunglasses Case
  • Purse - Night (optional)
  • Watch (optional)
  • Jewelry (optional)

Skip the watch, jewelry and second purse unless you know for a fact that you'll use them. I usually travel watch and jewelry-free to the beach anyways – fewer valuables to keep track of!

(Plus how many times have you packed jewelry only to never wear it? I found that this was an easy place to cut down on items.)

I keep these items ready to go at all times in my 3-1-1 travel bag . You don't need to do this, but if you're traveling often you'll probably find it helpful, whether or not you're heading to a beach destination.

  • Conditioner
  • Soap/Body wash
  • Body moisturizer
  • Face moisturizer
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Hair styling product
  • Contact solution (if needed)
  • Lipstick or lipgloss
  • Tinted moisturizer with SPF
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Travel size bug spray (optional)

These are the first aid items I always keep on hand when I'm traveling:

  • Prescription medication
  • Pain relievers
  • Digestion tablets
  • Allergy pills
  • Motion sickness tablets

Here's what I keep packed up in my toiletry bag :

  • Travel-size sewing kit
  • Bronzer - I also use this as eye shadow so that's one less thing to pack
  • Blush
  • SPF lip balm
  • Eyebrow pencil
  • Travel-size hairbrush
  • Mineral sunscreen stick

(You'll notice that my bag is light on makeup, but I really only bring the essentials on beach vacations.)

Electronics

I keep it simple in the electronics department. We're going to the beach after all! Here's my essential electronics list:

  • Cell phone & phone charger
  • Camera, camera charger, camera battery & camera memory card
  • e-Reader - this one is waterproof! Don't forget to download a good book.
  • e-Reader charger
  • Travel adapter (if necessary)

Finally, here are a couple more items that you might like to include on your packing list:

  • Language guide
  • Passport holder
  • Slim reusable travel mug - fill it with cold water once you're through security!
  • Packable beach bag or day trip bag
  • Extra plastic bag
  • Microfiber beach towels
  • Travel pillow
  • Travel-size umbrella

Step 6: Test-run your carry-on packing

When:  5-7 days before departure

Now that you have your carry-on packing list pulled together, it's time to do a test run. This is an optional step but definitely advised (especially if this is your first time traveling carry-on only).

Set aside an hour to run through your packing list, pack it up into your packing cubes , and make sure that you're not missing anything and that everything fits in your bag. Once everything is packed up measure and weigh your bag to confirm that you're meeting your airline's carry-on regulations and won't incur any extra cost.

Why take the time to do this? It gives you a chance to catch any glaring issues in your packing plan. You'll spot if you're overpacking or if you're still missing items on your list. So there'll be no need to rush out to the pharmacy at 11:30 pm the night before your flight!

How to Pack for a Beach Vacation in Just a Carry-On (Packing List Included!) - Coastal Wandering

Step 7: Double-check the weather forecast

When:  24-48 hours before departure

This is a quick – but very important – step. All you need to do is double-check the weather forecast for your destination 24-48 hours before you leave.

You'll use this information to confirm that your packing list will have you covered weather-wise. If there are any big changes, you'll still have enough time to adjust your carry-on before your departure.

Step 8: Finalize your carry-on bag

When:  24 hours before departure

This is it! You're so close to your beach vacation that you can practically feel your toes in the sand.

Ideally, you'll finalize your carry-on packing at the same time you double-check the weather forecast. This is when you'll make sure that all of your packing items are properly stored and ready to travel.

If you're like me, you'll also want to double-check that you're still okay with baggage measurements and weight. Better safe than sorry!

I recommend doing this final packing check 24 hours before departure simply because it removes the stress from packing. You're not in a hurry. There's no need to rush. You have time to think through everything in your bag and feel confident that you've done your due diligence.

When preparing for a flight, the final thing I'll do is make sure that my liquids bag and electronics are easily accessible in the outer pockets of my carry-on luggage. This helps make passing through security a piece of cake.

Step 9: Go on vacation!

That's it. You're ready to head to the beach ! This may feel like a lot of planning, but traveling carry-on only is really easy once you get the hang of it.

Now all that's left for you to do is order a frozen drink, stick your toes in the sand and enjoy the sunshine and wind in your hair. Have fun!

The BEST Minimalist Packing List For A Beach Vacation

This post is all about the best minimalist packing list for a beach vacation.

Minimalist packing for beach vacation.

I just got back from a 3-night beach vacation to Cancun, Mexico, and do I have the best minimalist packing list for you!

While getting ready for the trip, I knew I wanted to pack light. 3 nights and 4 days is just enough time to accidentally pack too much (haha) and I really didn’t want to go down that route.

So, here’s what I brought with me on the trip. I didn’t have to buy anything that I forgot, and I never felt like I didn’t have enough or too much. I really feel like it was the perfect mix of things!

Being a minimalist traveler or a minimalist packer is the easiest way to travel, whether you’re taking a road trip or flying to a new country. Less stuff = less stress! So let’s get you packed for your beach vacation.

Minimalist packing tips

Before we dive in to what you need to bring, here are some minimalist packing tips.

1. Roll your clothes when you pack them in your suitcase. This way, you can fit more into your suitcase than you would by simply folding them as usual.

2. Plan out your outfits for each day in advance. When you do this, you can better ensure that you don’t bring extra clothes and that you only bring what you need.

3. Pack clothes that you love to wear and feel comfortable in. Now’s not the time to pack that dress or romper that you never wear but think you might wear on vacation. If you wouldn’t wear it regularly, or you don’t feel comfortable in it, you aren’t likely to wear it on vacation and it’ll just take up space in your suitcase!

4. If you’ll be staying somewhere with a washing machine, bring along some laundry detergent. You can bring less clothes with you if you plan on washing what you wear! This way, you can wear your clothes more than once.

5. Whatever you don’t bring that you really need, you can always buy. Of course it wouldn’t be ideal to have to buy something you need on vacation, but sometimes we get so caught up in being “scared” that we won’t have something we need that we end up packing way too much.

You’ll be just fine with a few less things, and even if you really do forget to bring something that you need, you can always buy it (or even borrow it from a friend/family member if they’ll be on the trip, too!).

Minimalist Packing for Beach Vacation

Here are all the items that you need for your trip – but we’re keeping it minimalistic.

Essential items for a beach vacation

Here are the beach essentials you need to pack for your upcoming trip.

1. Carry-on luggage / Suitcase

First thing’s first: if you’ll be flying and you want to pack minimally, opt for a carry-on bag instead of going with a checked bag. If you’re driving to your beach destination, carry-on-sized luggage is still a great thing to aim for!

Not only is having carry-on luggage cheaper when flying, but it’s a lot less to carry around with you on your travels because it’s smaller.

Plus, if you have carry-on luggage that you take on the plane with you, you won’t have to wait at baggage claim to retrieve your bag which will save you some precious vacation time.

My absolute favorite carry-on luggage I’ve ever owned is this suitcase by Samsonite.

purple samsonite suitcase.

Not only does it come in multiple, beautiful colors, but my favorite feature of the suitcase is the lock.

I love the lock feature because if I’m ever separated from my bag (say I’m too early to check in to my hotel so I leave it with the concierge, for example) knowing it is locked and that no one can get into it reduces my nerves lol.

You can also bring a personal item which is usually just a smaller bag. If you want, you can use your tote bag that you’ll bring for the beach (more on this later) as your personal item to save space!

2. Water bottle

A water bottle is key, especially if you plan to be walking, swimming, or getting a bunch of exercise during your beach vacation (I know there are some of you out there, lol).

But really, having a water bottle with you is good in general. It’s easy to get dehydrated when you’re out of your normal routine, so having a water bottle nearby is a great way to stay healthy on your trip.

My favorite water bottle is this Stanley Cup. I love the straw, how much water it can hold, and how cute it is. It also comes in multiple colors, so you can find one that fits your personality. If you don’t already have a water bottle that you love, this is a great option!

3. Travel documents

Make sure you bring the proper travel documents with you, depending on if you are staying close or going out of the country.

You should always have your ID and a few debit or credit cards for money. In my opinion, it’s smart to bring both a debit card and a credit card. You may need to withdraw cash, and your debit card will come in handy if you need to do that.

Remember, though – if you’re going far, you might need to tell your banks that you are traveling. If they don’t have a heads up, and you try to use your card in a new place, your bank might flag that transaction for safety reasons and prevent you from using your card.

4. Beach bag

You’ll need a cute beach bag to bring all of your beach belongings along with you!

If you want to pack in a minimalist fashion, opt for a beach bag that is flexible and foldable. This way, it’s easy to pack and it will be light weight, too.

I love this one from Amazon:

Amazon beach tote bag.

5. Toiletry case

This is the BEST toiletries case that I swear by!! I got it for a 17-day trip to Italy, and have used it for countless vacations since.

I have a black one, size medium, and it’s very spacious, convenient, and easy to pack. It will hold your makeup, medications, anything for your skin-care routine, and so much more.

6. Reef-safe sunscreen

Don’t forget to pack your favorite reef-safe sunscreen! Reef-safe sunscreen simply ensures that when you get in the ocean, the sunscreen that is on your body is safe for the ocean, too.

You don’t want to get burned by the sun and not be able to sleep or lay down comfortably the rest of your vacation, so, sunscreen is key.

Dresses are perfect for a minimalist beach vacation because they are easy to wear, easy to pack, and super cute!

If you need an outfit to run errands in (maybe you have to go grocery shopping, or run to the coffee shop, or you want to take an early morning walk on the beach with your friends), this dress is a must-have.

Not only is it super comfortable, lightweight, and easy to pack, but it’s so cute, practical, and has built-in shorts and pockets, too!

8. Tank Tops / Tops

While on your vacation, you will likely want some tank tops or regular tops that can be mixed and matched with various shorts or pants.

Whatever you do, make sure that the tops you bring are in neutral colors. This way, you’ll have multiple outfit options at all times.

9. Shorts / Jeans

A pair of shorts and a pair of pants or jeans are always a good idea, too. When you’re not at the beach is when these items will really come into play.

You can wear your tops and shorts or jeans out to dinner on days where you don’t want to wear a dress! Having various tops and bottoms allows you to put together different outfits.

Again, stick with basic colors so you have various outfit options.

10. Workout outfit

If you think you might be working out on your vacation, be sure to bring a sports bra, workout top, workout bottoms (like leggings) and your workout shoes.

If you don’t think you’ll workout on your vacation, you can always skip these items!

11. Bathing suit(s)

If you want to be very minimal, one bathing suit will suffice. Just be sure to hang it somewhere it will dry quickly so that you can use it the next day.

If you don’t want to worry about drying your bathing suits in time, bringing two is a great idea.

Picture of an orange bathing suit.

12. Light rain jacket

Whenever you’re near the ocean, it’s always a good idea to bring a light rain jacket just in case the weather decides to take a turn.

To stay minimalistic, bring a light jacket that you’d feel comfortable wearing when you’re cold, too. This way, you don’t have to bring more than one jacket.

13. Sunglasses

In order to shield your eyes from the strong beach sun, make sure you pack your favorite pair of sunglasses!

Black and tortoise shell sunglasses from Amazon.

Speaking of protecting yourself… you should also bring a hat for sun protection. If you don’t really like to wear hats, make sure you load up on face sunscreen.

Depending on where you live, the sun is probably a lot stronger wherever you’re going for vacation, so don’t underestimate it!

Be sure to bring along a hat that is easy to pack and fold.

15. Flip flops

Of course, you’ll want flip flops that you can just slide on. It’s too much of a hassle to wear anything but flip flops to the beach, so do yourself a favor and pack at least one pair of flip flops!

I personally have the “Reef” brand flip flops and I love them. They’re super comfortable and they’ve lasted me forever. I live at the beach so it’s important that I have durable flip flops that I can wear all the time.

White "Reef" brand flipflops.

16. Beach cover-up

Beach cover ups are great because you can wear the same one for your entire trip. These are essential if you are looking for something quick to throw on over your bathing suit.

17. Pair of sneakers

If you plan to be walking a lot when not at the beach (like, going on excursions or adventures, for example) it’s a good idea to bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes.

You could bring work out shoes if you wanted (and then wear these if you plan on working out) or you can buy a pair of white sneakers that are cute and practical.

If you don’t want to bring too many pairs of shoes (they take up a lot of space in a suitcase, after all) I recommend a pair of flip flops and a pair of white sneakers!

Here are the white sneakers that I use and have LOVED for all of my vacations!

18. Sleeping clothes

Bring whatever outfit you feel most comfortable sleeping in. Whether that’s a t-shirt and shorts or something else, you can keep these clothing items minimal.

Optional items

Here are a few other important things you might want to consider bringing.

1. Beach towel

This is optional because usually, if you are staying at a resort or even at some Airbnb’s and hotels, they will provide beach towels for you.

However, if you’ll be staying somewhere where towels are not provided, make sure you bring one! I love these big fluffy ones from Amazon 🙂

2. Travel Journal

What’s the best way to make sure you remember every detail of your trip? Writing about it in your travel journal, of course!

Check out this travel journal by my friend and travel blogger @raimeetravel.

Travel journal.

If you love to read on the beach, make sure you bring your favorite book. I read this book while on the beach in St. Thomas recently, and absolutely lovedddddddd it!

It was a great, relaxing beach read that kept me super entertained.

When life gives you lululemons the book.

4. Small first aid kit

Another good thing to bring on your beach trip is a small first-aid kit. You never know when it’ll come in handy, but band-aids, gauze, neosporin, etc. are always good to have on hand.

If you really want to go prepared, you can bring medicine (like Tums, ibuprofen, and Dramamine), too.

5. Packing cubes

If you want your suitcase to be super organized, you can buy packing cubes. These usually come in different sizes, and you can put certain things in the different cubes.

For instance, you might put bathing suits in one packing cube, and your undergarments in another.

What will you include in your minimalist beach packing list? Hope you have the best trip!

Beach Packing List: What To Pack For A Beach Vacation & Things To Bring To The Beach

If you’re worried about what things to bring to the beach, prepare for the ultimate list of beach essentials. from basics to extras and toiletries to luxury relaxation, you won’t forget a thing if you stick to this packing list of beach necessities..

Nothing quite says summer like the sound of the ocean nearby, the scent of sunscreen on the breeze, and all of your beach essentials on hand for a day of sun and fun. A beach trip is the perfect option to enjoy a summer vacation getaway. Whether you plan to stay close to home or road trip to the beach with your closest friends, this complete beach packing list has you covered. Before you hit the sand, use this packing checklist to ensure you leave for your beach vacation with everything you need—and nothing you don't!

BEST LUGGAGE FOR A BEACH VACATION

Your luggage should always be versatile and lightweight. Especially for a beach vacation, you want to make sure you don’t pack too much. The goal is to relieve stress, not add to it.

If flying, consider just bringing your backpack as a carry-on and a personal item like a fanny pack . But no more than this, unless it’s a long trip, when you might need some larger, water-resistant luggage . Go light though! You’ll be lounging on the beach in your bikini most of the time, so you don’t need to pack much for a great beach vacation. Opt for easy-to-carry bags so you’ll feel more carefree.

Here are some things to consider in a beach bag:

  • Duffel bag : Lightweight and versatile, a duffel bag’s soft sides fit just about any space. Toss and go. It’s easy to pack, holds more than a rigid suitcase, and is more durable than you’d expect. And the best duffels are water-repellant with a bucket design that ensures water and sand won't infiltrate your bag at the beach. Alternatively, just opt for your backpack if it’s roomy enough.
  • Wheeled bags : You can’t beat wheels for heavy bags or long walking distances. If you plan to be on the go more than you intend to relax, this is an excellent back-saver.
  • Small bag : Finally, for a care-free week at the beach where all you need is a swimsuit and a small bag for beach essentials: a small fanny pack , crossbody bag , or tote bag are all easy, lightweight, and perfect.

ORGANIZING YOUR BEACH BAG

For lots of activities, you'll have a lot of supplies. From sandals and walking shoes to sunscreen and shades, you need to keep it all organized. This is doubly true if your beach vacation includes kayaking, boating, or other outdoor adventures.

Keep your beach essentials straight with packing organizers like packing cubes , and save space by compressing your clothing . You can then quickly slide organizers of any kind straight into the drawers of your hotel dresser, making unpacking a breeze.

For beach vacations when you’re on the move more than you’re staying put, keeping organized with travel packing cubes makes it easy to load up and head out if everything is contained. Compressing your clothing saves up to eighty percent more space, so for extended trips, it can reduce the amount of luggage you need—making it more likely you can fit everything into a roomy travel backpack .

Use packing folders for your dress clothes to keep them nice and neat so you can enjoy date night without worrying about wrinkles . Using zippered compartments for things like toiletries makes it easy to keep track of makeup, jewelry, and other necessities.

To keep your electronics sand-free, consider a packing organizer designed to keep your cords, cables, and gadgets in order.

Lastly, you’ll surely need to bring some food to the beach—and a way to keep it cool. Coolers are too bulky for a beach vacation, so instead, pack a large lunch bag or insulated bag with your food essentials.

BEACH VACATION PACKING LIST

Basic bag beach essentials.

Figuring out what to bring to the beach is essential. You don’t want to carry a heavy bag, but you should ensure you have everything you need to enjoy your trip. Even if you plan to lounge on the beach and do nothing else, there are some basic items you want to include in your beach bag, specifically. Here are a few ideas for what to pack for the beach.

  • Bathing suit
  • A good book
  • Change of clothes (top, bottoms, underwear)
  • Cell phone and portable charger
  • Headphones and/or portable speaker
  • Beach blanket or sarong
  • Reusable bottle of water

WHAT TO PACK FOR YOUR BEACH VACATION

  • Conditioner

If you plan to sightsee or do anything else, your beach vacation packing list is probably more extensive. You may include walking shoes and socks, additional toiletries like makeup, and more lightweight clothing you can layer in case it’s cool in the evenings. Use the Ultimate Travel Packing List to determine what else you might need.

FUN THINGS TO PACK FOR THE BEACH

When considering what to pack for the beach, you might want to include a few extra items to ensure your beach time is relaxing and enjoyable. If you have space in your beach bag, these items may not be essentials, but they are fun things to bring to the beach:

  • Frisbees and beach balls to start a friendly game
  • Beach umbrella

TRAVEL HEALTH ITEMS TO PACK

Even when packing for a beach trip, don’t forget prescription medications and other items to stay healthy. You don’t want to ruin your vacation by getting sick. Take precautions keeping hand sanitizer within reach (and use it even after washing your hands), and pack a small first aid kit with band-aids.

If you travel internationally, check the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s website for the necessary travel vaccines, medication, and other travel advice. You may also need additional personal healthcare items like glasses, contacts, or allergy pills. A little research pays off, so stay informed and always be prepared if you’re traveling far from home or your college campus.

PERSONAL ITEMS AND TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

Even if you plan to check a bag, make sure necessary travel documents are always accessible and stored in your personal item . You should have photo identification, passports (birth certificates for minors in your group), insurance cards, credit cards, and boarding passes with you at all times, perhaps in a money belt .

If you have frequent flier cards , a student ID (or anything else that might get you a discount), or maps and travel guides, bring those, too.

Also, keep an extra outfit and some essential toiletries with you in your carry-on backpack in case your checked bag gets lost or delayed. It’s a good idea to pack a light jacket, an eye mask , or earplugs to keep you comfortable on long journeys—and be sure you’ve packed your headphones, or you’ll regret it.

For entertainment purposes, you should consider bringing the following items on your beach vacation:

  • Portable speaker
  • Laptop or tablet
  • Electrical converters or travel adapters
  • Journal and pen
  • Water bottle and bottle sling
  • Insulated tote bag or cooler

CHECKLIST OF THINGS TO DO BEFORE A BEACH VACATION

Consider your safety above all else when you travel to an unfamiliar place. Hidden belts , undercover bras, reflective clothing, and a flashlight are useful. And the closer you keep your belongings to you, the better—if you haven’t tried a fanny pack yet, now is the time! It will help you stay organized and germ-free when you’re outside of your home since you can pack your facemask and sanitizer inside, alongside your essential documents and money.

If your family is all leaving home together, don’t forget to keep your home safe while you’re away. Not only should you keep yourself safe on vacation, but you need to prepare your home for your departure. Consider the following:

  • Hold your mail
  • Stop deliveries
  • Board your pets
  • Pre-pay bills
  • Unplug appliances
  • Lock doors and windows
  • Put lights on timers
  • Secure valuables
  • Give travel itinerary to a trusted friend
  • Set your alarm

Vacation is supposed to be fun, so don’t spend time worrying about whether you forgot to lock up the house before you left. Check this list off before you go and enjoy a carefree trip!

Use these lists of things to bring as a jumping-off point for your own personalized beach packing list. Go through your itinerary daily and make a list of things to take to the beach that you know you will need. Dress yourself (in your mind) from head to toe each day, considering all weather scenarios and other possible travel hiccups.

Now it’s time to gather your friends, organize and pack your bags , take a final pre-trip picture for social media, and enjoy your glorious beach vacation getaway!

Beach Vacation Packing List FAQs

What essential items should i pack for a beach vacation.

Every beach vacation requires a few essentials to ensure you have everything you need to enjoy yourself. So whether you’re lounging on the beach or catching some waves, make sure you pack these items:

  • Swimsuits and cover-ups: You can’t enjoy the beach without wearing the right clothing! Pack at least a few swimsuits and cover-ups so you can mix and match to prevent tan lines.
  • Sunscreen: Sunscreen is essential for everyone, no matter your tanning preferences. Always have an extra bottle of sunscreen in your beach bag, and use it after getting out of the water and every few hours to protect your beautiful tanned skin.
  • Beach towel: You’ll spend a lot of time on your beach towel, so you’ll want something large and brightly colored to share with a friend.
  • Accessories like hats, flip-flops, and a beach bag: Always wear flip-flops to the beach to make walking on the hot sand easier! Hats can also protect your skin and eyes from dangerous UV rays, and you can pack both in a lightweight beach bag to ensure you bring all your essentials with you.
  • Personal items: Personal items to pack for a beach vacation include entertainment like a good book, snacks, and water to keep with you at all times.

What are some tips for packing efficiently for a beach vacation?

The key to a good beach vacation is packing lightly! You can pack all your must-haves easily by following a few packing tips. Rolling clothes for packing is the easiest way to save space in your luggage, but you can also use packaging and compression cubes to organize everything. However, we understand the desire to pack more than you need, so it’s important to stick to your travel checklist to ensure you have all your essentials before packing extraneous items.

How should I pack my beach towel to save space in my luggage?

Beach towels are lightweight but bulky, making it difficult to pack all your essentials in one bag. Luckily, there are a few tricks to save space, such as rolling your towel instead of folding it into a square. To roll your beach towel and make it as small as possible, fold it in half before rolling it, and tie it with a rubber band to keep it in place. You can also use compression bags or extra small packing cubes to save space in your luggage.

Are there any items I should avoid packing for a beach vacation?

When you’re enjoying a beach vacation, the last thing you want to do is lug around heavy bags. So, you should avoid packing non-essentials to keep your luggage as light as possible. Things to avoid packing for a beach vacation include the following:

  • Heavy items like makeup bags, magazines, full-sized shampoo and conditioner, and hair dryers
  • Valuable items, such as jewelry and devices
  • Formal wear (unless you plan on going to a fancy dinner)
  • Excessive amounts of outfits
  • Impractical shoes

Remember to consider the types of activities you’ll participate in to help create a beach packing list that will keep you covered no matter the weather.

Beach Vacation Packing List for 2024 – What to Pack for Your Next Family Trip This Summer

Ultimate Beach Vacation Packing List

A beach vacation can make for the perfect escape. There’s nothing better than taking in beautiful beach views as you relax in the sunshine with the people you care about most.

If you’re planning to travel to the beach soon, you want to make sure that you pack the right essentials for your trip. Packing for a beach trip or a warmer-weather destination is a little different than packing for other types of trips that you might take.

By reading our beach vacation packing guide and using our packing checklist, you can ensure that you don’t forget essentials that will improve your beach vacation. Here’s what you need to know as you prepare for your beach vacation:

Table of Contents

What to Consider Before You Pack

If you haven’t been to the beach in a long time or are used to packing for other types of trips, you may be unsure of where to begin. Here’s what to consider before you pack:

Don’t forget to prioritize comfort. As you begin to pack, don’t ignore comfort. Sure, you’ll want plenty of short-sleeved items. But beyond that, you also want to consider clothing material. Choosing items that are breathable and easy to move in are best. By bringing comfortable, flowy clothing items, you’ll be able to feel relaxed while spending a lot of time outside.

Pack the right shoes. If you’re spending a significant amount of time near water and sand, you want to have the right shoes on hand. Flip-flops and sandals make for great shoewear because you won’t have to worry about excess sand getting in your shoes. If you want footwear that will offer more protection while in and around the water, water shoes may be a good choice. You might also bring leisure shoes for casual nights spent away from the sand. If you’re going to work out on your vacation, bringing a good pair of athletic sneakers is also a good idea.

Bring a beach bag. You should pack a beach bag to make it easier to carry all of your essentials to the beach. You may want to pick a bag with a unique pattern or a bright color, so it’s easy to spot while at the beach. Having a bag with a closure, like a zipper, can be beneficial so you don’t lose items throughout your vacation.

Bring other bags, too. Having extra reusable bags is also a good idea. It may be easier to put some items in a little bag and then palace them in your beach bag. If you don’t have reusable bags, bringing plastic Ziploc bags is a good idea. You can likely re-use some of them.

Check to see if you’ll have access to laundry facilities. If you’re staying somewhere with a washer and dryer, you may be able to pack fewer clothes.

You may want to buy some items at your destination. It may not make sense to pack some things, like sunscreen. If you’re flying and only bringing a carry-on bag, for example, you’ll be limited to bringing liquids in containers that are no larger than 3.4 ounces. If you decide to check bags – you may have to pay baggage fees. Figure out if it makes sense to bring sunscreen and other similar products or buy them upon arrival. These items may have inflated prices if you’re visiting a popular beach destination.

How to Deal with Wet or Sandy Items on Your Return Trip

Whether taking a beach trip or traveling to a tropical destination, you’ll likely have clothing and other essentials that get wet or sandy. To minimize excess sand, always shake out clothing and other items before getting back in your vehicle or entering your hotel or rental home.

Throughout your travels, it’s also good practice to hang wet items up as soon as you get back to your hotel or vacation home rental. The more time you allow items to dry, the less mess you have to deal with in your suitcase.

You may also want to pack a dry bag and bring it with you when you’re at the beach. These bags help to protect your essentials from getting wet. You may also want to pack large ziplock bags. You can easily wet items in them and seal the bag to keep the rest of your suitcase dry when you back up to head back home.

If you have larger items, such as wet towels, it may be beneficial to pack a couple of extra trash bags. You can wrap these items in the garbage bag to protect the contents of your bag. Trash bags are also a great way to separate dirty clothes that still need to be washed.

Do You Need to Pack Towels?

One decision you’ll need to make is whether to pack beach towels. This greatly depends on your destination and accommodation of choice. Some hotels and vacation rentals may provide beach towels for you to use. Be sure to look into this before you begin packing.

Regardless, you’ll probably want to bring a beach blanket. Look for a lightweight blanket that is easy to fold up to maximize space. A blanket will make it easier to lie down on the beach and enjoy yourself without worrying about getting covered in sand.

What About Other Beach Equipment?

You may also be wondering if you need to bring other beach equipment like chairs, umbrellas, or coolers. Having these items available can make a day at the beach more enjoyable. But whether you should bring these items depends on where you’re going, how you’re traveling to your destination, and whether these essentials will be provided for you.

How will you be traveling to the beach? If you’re driving a car and have plenty of room, it probably makes sense to bring these items. If you’re flying to your beach destination, you’ll likely have limited space to pack equipment like coolers, chairs, and umbrellas.

As you decide what to bring, first check to see if your accommodation will have items available for you to borrow. This way, you’re not lugging unnecessary equipment with you. If they’re not provided, and you don’t want to pack these items, you may be able to rent them locally.

Suggested Beach Vacation Packing List

A packing list can ensure you have everything you need for your next trip to the beach. I highly recommend printing a list and checking off items as you pack them.

Clothing and Accessories

Here are our recommended clothing and accessories to pack for a beach trip.

Here are our recommended toiletries to pack for a beach trip.

Here are our recommended beach essentials to pack.

Miscellaneous

Here are our recommended misc items to pack for a beach trip.

What Not to Pack

Don’t bring uncomfortable clothes. You want to make sure that the clothing that you bring feels good. You should be able to move around easily and not feel sweaty.

Don’t bring anything too fancy. You may want to pack some nicer going-out clothes for the evening, but generally, most beach trips require more casual attire. There’s no point in loading up on fancy clothes if you won’t be wearing them.

You may be able to skip the beach towels. As mentioned earlier, if your accommodation provides beach towels, you can avoid packing them. You don’t want to take up unnecessary space in your suitcase or car.

You may be able to skip bringing other beach equipment. You may also be able to skip bringing other beach essentials like beach chairs and umbrellas. Just make sure that your hotel or vacation home has these items on hand or have a plan to rent them locally.

Tips for Success

These tips can help you better prepare as you pack for your beach vacation:

  • Make a packing list and check each item off as you pack . This will help you stay organized as you pack and ensure that you don’t forget to bring important items.
  • Care for your skin. Your skin health is important. Be sure to pack sunscreen and insect repellent or prepare to buy these items once you arrive at the beach. You might also consider bringing SPF lip balm, Aloe Vera, and other sunburn care products.
  • Don’t forget beach-appropriate accessories. You don’t want to be without must-have beach accessories like sunglasses and hats. These essentials can help protect you and keep you more comfortable as you spend hours in the sun. If you forget to pack these items, prices may be inflated at your destination.
  • Bring extra beach essentials. It’s a good idea to bring extra beach must-haves like bathing suits. If you only bring one suit and it’s wet, you’re not going to want to put on a damp swimsuit the next day. You may be able to get away with only bringing one or two swimsuits if you’re staying somewhere with laundry facilities.
  • Consider evening weather. While it may be sunny and warm during the day, some beach destinations get cooler in the evenings. Be sure to pack sweatshirts and other long-sleeved items, so you’re comfortable at night.
  • Bring date-night attire. If you plan to go out for a date night or spend time out in the evenings, you may want to have a couple of nicer outfits on hand. Think ahead about how you plan to spend your time.
  • Wear bulky items. If you have limited space and don’t want to overpack your car or suitcase, you might consider wearing bulky items. This can free up space without skipping things that you need. Plus, if you’re traveling from a colder destination, you’ll be comfortable and have the gear you need for your return trip.
  • Water is a must. Dehydration is a concern when you spend so much time in the sun. It’s a good idea to bring refillable water bottles with you so you can fill them before you head to the beach. Another option is to buy cases of water when you arrive. Neglecting your water intake while out in the sun can lead to serious health concerns.
  • Bring extra entertainment. Sure, watching the waves and making conversation is fun. But you may also want to have other forms of entertainment on hand. Bringing a water-resistant portable speaker is one option if you’re going to listen to music while on the beach. Packing one or two books is another excellent choice. Beach toys, floats, and gear are perfect entertainment options for kids and teens.
  • Family trips may require more planning. If you’re taking a family beach trip and traveling with young babies or children, you’ll need to do more planning. You want to make sure that your kids will be comfortable and safe while at the beach. Items like baby beach tents, swim diapers, baby wipes, beach strollers, soft coolers, and life jackets are extra essentials you may want to bring.

Best Beaches By State

Here are our recommendations for the best beaches organized by state (more to come soon):

  • Best Beaches in South Carolina

Make a packing list (or use ours!) and check each item off as you pack.

It’s best to bring more than one swimsuit. If your suit is wet, you’re going to want to have a backup suit ready to go. If you’re staying somewhere that provides access to laundry facilities, you can get away with packing fewer suits.

This depends on whether they will be provided for you at the place you’re staying. Often, vacation homes will provide beach towels for guests to use. If you don’t want to bring bulky items like umbrellas and chairs, you may be able to rent them locally

Planning your next beach vacation? One of the first things we think of after booking a beach getaway is what to wear and what to pack. After traveling to so many islands and summer destinations, I put together my favorite beach vacation must-haves & packing list.

I usually pack lots of colorful travel outfits , several swimsuits, cute beach accessories that look great in photos, beauty products to protect my skin, and of course water-resistant products for boat rides and the beach.

Beach vacation must haves

Beach Vacation Must Haves: Beauty Products

Protecting your skin is the most important part of a travel beauty routine. A lot of people neglect wearing sunscreen, but it should be an essential part of your daily routine (not just for the beach).

Choose a tanning oil that also has SPF protection.

If you’ve never tried this, then it is a game-changer when it comes to after-sun care. Aloe Vera has soothing and moisturizing qualities and you can use it for both your face and body. If you get sunburned, put the Aloe Vera Gel in the fridge before application. It will feel so good after a long day at the beach.

Don’t forget to protect your lips, especially if you’re sitting in the sun all day. Using an SPF Lip Balm will prevent dryness and chapping.

Choose one that is long-lasting or waterproof. Bright Lipstick will make your lips pop and looks amazing in photos.

When it’s super hot and you can’t wear foundation, tinted moisturizer gives you great cover-up and SPF protection.

7.  Deodorant Wipes

Yes, they exist and they are so useful for hot and humid days.

Mascara is a great way to brighten up your eyes even if you’re not wearing any other makeup.

Travel-sized makeup kits are perfect if you want to pack light.

Beach destinations are normally so humid and sitting in the sun all day or swimming can result in very dry hair. Argan Oil can be applied at the beach or as a leave-in treatment after showering. You can also use it for your skin and nails.

When I say instant, I mean instant. This nail polish remover has a round sponge in the bottle. You can just stick your nail inside, twist it around and poof the nail polish comes off instantly. You also don’t have to worry about carrying a regular/liquid polish remover.

Must-Have Beach Outfits:

Maxi dresses can be worn day and night with the right accessories. Choose colors that look good on the beach or for a night out.

Pack as many as you can, because sundresses really don’t take up much space in your luggage.

Beach vacation Packing List

Rompers look so good on the beach and give you the comfort of wearing shorts in case you want to go on a few adventures.

Great to throw on over your bathing suit.

Mix and match the same long skirt with different tops.

To wear over jeans or shorts.

This is another option that you can wear both at the beach or for a night out.

Beach Vacation Packing List: Stylish Beach Accessories

A great way to protect your face and cool off during really hot days.

I’m obsessed with cover-ups that have colorful pom poms. They also look amazing in photos.

Because everyone needs that Instagram-worthy photo with a huge unicorn!

Beach vacation must haves

These are super cute if you want to enjoy drinks in the pool.

Choose one that can double as a shopping bag.

My favorites are pink mirror sunglasses that match with everything.

Beach Vacation Packing List: Swimsuits

I usually pack at least two. I love two-pieces that have padded tops for extra support.

Great to have if you want to go snorkeling or diving.

These are so in style and are perfect if you need more cover-up during adventures.

Beach Must Haves: Shoes & Sandals

I live in my sandals when I travel. Try to wear them before you travel to make sure they are comfortable enough to stay on your feet all day.

Choose ones that don’t make your feet slip when they get wet.

I can’t live without my swimming shoes, especially when I’m chasing waterfalls or going to rocky beaches. Swimming shoes protect your fit and prevent slipping.

Beach Must Haves: Water Resistant

Never take your electronics (especially your expensive cameras) on beach or boat trips without a dry bag. I have dry bags in different sizes, but I recommend the medium ones that can usually fit everything inside and are not bulky to carry.

This is great if you want to keep your phone around your neck. I actually even went swimming with one of these and my phone was completely dry. Just to be safe, I don’t recommend staying in the water with it for a long period of time.

Undecided about what to pack for Cancun? I feel the pain. This Cancun packing list will help you figure out what to bring to your amazing beach vacation in Cancun.

And, besides a Cancun Packing list essential, I am also sharing some cute outfit ideas and useful accessories.

From swimsuits and sunscreen to comfortable shoes and insect repellent, there are several items that should be on your packing list to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable trip.

In this article, we’ll cover the essential items you should pack for your Cancun vacation, as well as some tips and tricks to help you make the most of your time in this beautiful destination.

Essential Documents

When packing for a trip to Cancun, it is important to make sure you have all the necessary documents with you. Here are the essential documents you should pack:

Passport and Visas

If you are traveling to Cancun from another country, you will need a valid passport. It is recommended that your passport be valid for at least six months after your expected return date. Some countries may also require a visa to enter Mexico, so it is important to check the visa requirements before you travel.

Travel Insurance

If you ask me I have two recommended travel insurance companies, one is  SafetyWing , which I find relatively affordable and quite comprehensive.

The other is not a company but a site aggregator,  Travel Insurance Master which will help you find the perfect insurance for you. You fill out the form with the information about your profile and requirements and they select the insurance company that is a good fit.

Also if you are a diver you should have a dive insurance, for many reasons. Keep in mind that Hyperbaric chambers and hospitalization, in general, are outrageously expensive in Mexico!

Dive Assure is one of the top insurance companies for diving and we cannot recommend them enough. I am sure you have heard of them as they are one of the most popular.

I also use it for non-diving trips as they offer a discount on those ones.

Identification Cards

It is always a good idea to carry identification cards with you when traveling. This can include your driver’s license, national ID card, or any other government-issued identification. You may also want to carry a copy of your passport in case you need to provide identification while exploring Cancun.

In summary, when packing for a trip to Cancun, make sure to bring your passport and any necessary visas, purchase travel insurance, and carry identification cards with you. By having these essential documents with you, you can enjoy your trip to Cancun with peace of mind.

Here below I am sharing a great accessory to hold passport + money and other small items

Water-to-go filter water bottle

This is an absolute travel essential for me. You may already know that in Cancun the tap water is not drinkable . well, with water-to-go it is. The water-to-go bottle has a special filter that kills 99.99% of bacterias of all sorts, illness-causing contaminants, including those as small as a virus.

The water-to-go filter bottle is made out of sugar cane and the filter replaces 400 plastic bottles.

With this powerful filter, you can drink tap water in Mexico as much as you want anywhere you are, for a total of 3 months. If you are planning to stay longer, remember to purchase extra filters to replace them. You can order them also while in Mexico on Amazon Mexico or directly on the water-to-go-site .

Clothing and Footwear

When it comes to packing for a trip to Cancun, choosing the right clothing and footwear is essential. The tropical climate and beachy atmosphere make for a relaxed and casual vibe, but it’s important to be prepared for any occasion. Here are some tips for packing the right clothing and footwear for your Cancun vacation.

Cancun is known for its beautiful beaches, and you’ll want to make sure you have the right attire to enjoy them. Pack plenty of swimsuits, cover-ups, and beach towels. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. A beach bag is also handy for carrying all your essentials.

Casual Outfits

During the day, you’ll likely be exploring Cancun attractions, malls, mayan ruins , museums, or simply lounging by the pool. Pack lightweight and comfortable clothing such as shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses.

Cotton and linen are great fabric choices as they are breathable and keep you cool in the hot and humid weather. A light jacket or sweater may come in handy for cooler evenings.

Evening Attire

While Cancun is a casual destination, there are some occasions when you may want to dress up a bit. For example, if you plan on going to a nice restaurant or attending a show.

Pack a few dressier outfits such as sundresses, skirts, or slacks paired with a blouse.

Men can opt for a collared shirt and dress pants. Don’t forget to pack comfortable shoes for walking around at night.

If you plan on going out at night, pack a pair of dressier shoes such as wedges or loafers. Don’t forget to pack socks if you plan on doing any outdoor activities such as hiking or zip-lining.

Overall, packing the right clothing and footwear for your Cancun vacation is essential for enjoying all that this beautiful destination has to offer. With these tips in mind, you’ll be prepared for any activity or occasion that comes your way.

Beach and Swimming Gear

Cancun is famous for its beaches, and amazing hotels with pools , so packing the right swimwear is essential. Visitors should bring at least two swimsuits to ensure they always have a dry option. Women may want to consider a one-piece swimsuit or a bikini with a cover-up for when they are not in the water.

Men can opt for swim trunks or board shorts. It is advisable to choose swimsuits made of quick-drying material, such as nylon or polyester.

Beach Towels

A beach towel is a must-have item for any trip to Cancun. Most hotels provide beach towels, but it is always a good idea to bring one or two of your own. Microfiber towels are a great option as they are lightweight, compact, and dry quickly, however, the popular Turkish cotton towels are much cuter.

Snorkeling Equipment

Cancun is known for its crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life, making snorkeling a popular activity. Visitors can rent snorkeling gear at many beachside vendors, but bringing your equipment is a great way to save money and ensure a proper fit, and definitely more hygienic. Snorkeling gear includes a mask, snorkel, and fins, but you can get fins there.

It is important to choose a mask that fits well and does not leak. Fins should be comfortable and fit snugly to prevent blisters. I would also bring a waterproof camera to capture the stunning underwater views. I have a GoPro 10 but there are many other options available, see below.

Toiletries and Health Items

When packing for a trip to Cancun, it’s important to make sure you have all the necessary toiletries and health items. Here are some essential items that should be included in your packing list:

Personal Hygiene Products

It’s important to pack personal hygiene products such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, soap, and deodorant. These items are readily available in Cancun, but it’s always better to bring your preferred brand to avoid any discomfort.

Sun Protection

Cancun is known for its sunny weather, and it’s important to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays. Pack sunscreen with at least SPF 30, lip balm with SPF, and a hat or cap. Sunglasses are also a must to protect your eyes from the bright sunlight.

CeraVe 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 | Face Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide & Titanium Dioxide for Sensitive Skin | With Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide, and Ceramides | 2.5 oz

Medications and First Aid

It’s always better to be prepared for any medical emergencies while on vacation. Pack any necessary medications such as allergy medicine, pain relievers, and motion sickness pills. Consult your doctor for that.

But also remember that prevention is much better, so stay away from tap water , and protect your skin from the sun, even when it’s not shining, it still affects your skin.

It’s also a good idea to bring a small first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and insect repellent.

Overall, it’s important to pack the necessary toiletries and health items to ensure a comfortable and safe trip to Cancun.

Electronics and Accessories

Get a local sim card.

Having a local sim will help you save a lot of cash as well. Check with your local provider how much will the roaming costs you and then compare it with a local SIM CARD – I have always been using Telcel because it’s the one with the widest coverage. Getting a Mexican sim card is particularly useful when you rent a car or go out to explore by bus. It allows you to stay connected and not only share your adventure in real time but call for help in case of emergency.

Smartphone and Charger

A smartphone is an essential item for most travelers, and it’s no different when visiting Cancun. It can be used to stay in touch with friends and family, navigate the city, and take photos. A charger is also a must-have item to ensure that the smartphone stays powered up throughout the day.

It’s recommended to bring a portable charger as well, especially if you plan on being out and about for an extended period. This will ensure that you can charge your phone on the go and won’t have to worry about running out of battery.

I have the Anker and it was great but it’s not compatible with the iPhone 15 for which I had to buy a magnetic charger . However, it’s my understanding that the latest version does work with the iPhone 15. Make sure you check it’s compatible with your phone brand and model, before buying.

Camera Equipment

Cancun is a beautiful destination with plenty of photo opportunities, so it’s recommended to bring a camera or other equipment to capture those moments. A high-quality camera will allow you to take stunning photos of the beaches, the city, and the local culture.

It’s also a good idea to bring a waterproof camera or a waterproof case for your camera, especially if you plan on spending time in the water. This will allow you to take photos while swimming or snorkeling without worrying about damaging your camera.

Power Adapters

If you’re traveling from outside of Mexico, it’s important to bring a power adapter to ensure that your electronics can be charged. Mexico uses a different type of electrical outlet than many other countries, so it’s important to make sure that you have the right adapter.

It’s recommended to bring a universal adapter that can be used in multiple countries, as this will ensure that you can use it on future trips as well. It’s also a good idea to bring multiple adapters if you have multiple devices that need to be charged.

If you are coming from the US you don’t have to worry about it, because we have the same power outlet in Mexico. Otherwise, make sure you have an adapter before getting to Mexico so you don’t have to waste your vacation time searching for one.

Travel Comfort and Convenience

Travel pillows.

When it comes to long flights or car rides, having a comfortable travel pillow can make all the difference. A good travel pillow will provide neck support and prevent stiffness or soreness.

There are many different types of travel pillows available, including inflatable, memory foam, and microbead.

Inflatable pillows are lightweight and easy to pack, while memory foam pillows offer more support and can be compressed for packing. Microbead pillows are soft and flexible, conforming to the shape of your neck.

Luggage Organizers

Keeping your luggage organized can save you time and hassle during your trip. Packing cubes are a popular option for separating clothing and accessories, allowing you to easily find what you need without having to dig through your entire suitcase. Compression bags can also be useful for maximizing space in your luggage.

They allow you to compress your clothing and create more room for other items. Shoe bags are another useful organizer, keeping your shoes separate from the rest of your belongings and preventing them from getting dirty.

Travel Guides

A good travel guide can be an invaluable resource when planning your trip to Cancun. It can provide information on local attractions, restaurants, and activities, as well as tips on navigating the area. Some popular travel guides for Cancun include Lonely Planet , Fodor’s .

This site also has everything you need to know about Cancun. I am also working on a downloadable travel guide that you can read offline and without ads. ( shoot me an email if you are interested )

Money and Finances

Cash and credit cards.

When traveling to Cancun, it’s important to have a plan for your money and finances. While credit cards are widely accepted, it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand for smaller purchases and tipping. ATMs are readily available, but it’s important to check with your bank beforehand to ensure that your card will work internationally and to avoid any unexpected fees.

In terms of credit cards, Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, while American Express is less commonly accepted. It’s a good idea to notify your credit card company of your travel plans beforehand to avoid any issues with fraud alerts or card freezes.

Keep in mind also that withdrawing US$ from local machines comes at a high cost. It’s more convenient to withdraw Mexican pesos directly.

Currency Exchange Info

The official currency of Mexico is the Mexican peso. While many places in Cancun accept US dollars, it’s often at a less favorable exchange rate. It’s recommended to exchange some cash for pesos at a bank or currency exchange booth upon arrival to ensure that you have local currency for purchases and tipping.

It’s important to be aware of the current exchange rate and any fees associated with currency exchange. Some banks may have better exchange rates than others, so it’s worth doing some research beforehand to ensure that you’re getting the best deal possible. Additionally, it’s important to be cautious of any scams or fraudulent exchange practices. Never exchange currency with random strangers on the road.

What not to bring to Cancun

Avoid heavy books.

Carrying heavy books can be cumbersome and take up valuable space in your luggage. Instead, opt for electronic alternatives like a Kindle to enjoy your reading without the added weight.

Limit the Cash You Carry

While it’s essential to have Mexican pesos for tipping and purchases, avoid carrying an excessive amount of cash that could be unsafe if lost. You can always withdraw more from ATMs as needed.

Leave Expensive Jewelry Behind

Given the presence of pickpockets in Cancun, it’s wise to avoid bringing expensive jewelry that may attract unwanted attention. If necessary, opt for inexpensive accessories to enhance your outfits.

Skip Bulky Clothing

Cancun’s climate is warm throughout the year, so packing heavy, warm clothing is unnecessary. However, if traveling during winter (December to February), consider a sweater or shawl for evenings or a windbreaker for boat trips.

Steer Clear of Bringing Fruit

Customs regulations prohibit bringing fruit into Mexico, so it’s best to leave such items at home. Avoid unnecessary delays during customs checks by refraining from packing fruits or vegetables.

Choose Quick-Drying Fabrics

Cancun’s hot and humid weather can pose challenges for drying fabrics. Pack clothing made of materials that dry quickly and resist mold growth. This ensures your items stay fresh and ready for use throughout your stay.

Cancun packing list: final thoughts

I hope this packing list helped you figure out what to bring and what not to bring to Cancun. Think of what kind of vacation you want to have, and what activities are you planning to do, and pack accordingly.

The Ultimate Short Trip Packing List: What to Pack for a Weekend Getaway

Planning a weekend getaway? Whether you're headed to the beach, exploring a new city, or escaping to the countryside, packing efficiently is key to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable trip.

In this guide, we will present the ultimate short trip packing list , providing you with essential items and practical tips to pack light while covering all your bases.

Get ready to make the most of your weekend adventure without the hassle of overpacking or forgetting important essentials.

Short Trip Packing List: Every Essential

Making the right choices ensures a smooth travel experience and maximises the utility of your packed items. The first crucial step is deciding whether to check a bag or opt for a carry-on, which sets the tone for your packing strategy.

Extra Tips For Packing

Extra Tips For Packing

Preparing for a short trip doesn't have to be a daunting task. In fact, with a few pro packing tips up your sleeve, you can tackle it with confidence and efficiency.

These expert tips will help you pack smart, stay organised, and make the most of your compact luggage. Prioritise essential items and employ these space-saving techniques now.

  • Think about any amenities the hotel offers: Consider what items your hotel will provide, such as toiletries, a hairdryer, iron, towels, linens, or kitchen appliances. If these items are available, you can leave them out of your packing list to save space and reduce the weight of your luggage.
  • Choose a quality bag: A quality bag will protect your items and make it easier to access them throughout your journey. If you are looking for that “perfect” bag, check out our cabin-friendly backpacks . Designed to be the trusty companion on the road, you will have a piece of mind exploring every corner of the globe.
  • Use packing cubes or compression bags: Invest in packing cubes or compression bags to further optimise space and keep everything in check.
  • Roll your clothes: The next most popular tip is rolling your clothes instead of folding them. This technique saves space, reduces wrinkles, and allows for better organisation within your bag.
  • Wear bulky items: If you're bringing bulky items like jackets, boots, or heavy sweaters, wear them while travelling by plane instead of packing them. This frees up space in your bag and ensures you stay within weight restrictions.
  • Fill shoes and hat’s inside with little items: Make use of all the extra empty space. Likewise, if there’s any room or gap in the suitcase, fill them with clothes (or pads for extra protection against bumping).
  • Don't overpack: Lastly, remember, it's a short trip, so avoid the temptation to pack unnecessary items. Stick to the basics and resist the urge to bring everything along.

What Should I Pack For A Short Trip?

When it comes to packing for a short trip, it's all about finding the perfect balance between practicality and enjoyment. Here is a list for you to get started for a weekend getaway:

  • 3 x Underwear
  • 3 x Pair of socks
  • 3 x Tops (a mix of casual and dressier options)
  • 2 x Bottoms (pants or shorts)
  • 1 x Comfortable shoes
  • 1 x Hat or cap
  • 2 x Swimsuit (Optional)
  • Important document.

What Should I Pack For 5 Days Away?

Embarking on a five-day adventure calls for careful planning and packing. Begin by curating a wardrobe that includes a combination of comfortable yet stylish outfits, ensuring you're ready for any occasion that may arise.

To maintain your personal care routine, bring travel-sized toiletries and don't forget items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, and skincare products.

Consider carrying a good book or a journal to keep you entertained during downtime. Definitely pack a camera or smartphone to capture the beautiful moments you'll encounter on your journey.

Lastly, bring along any necessary travel documents, chargers, and adapters to stay connected and organised throughout your five-day escapade.

What Should I Pack For 4 Days?

When packing, think about versatile clothing options that can be mixed and matched effortlessly, ensuring you have enough outfits for each day.

Don't forget to pack a few extra tops or shirts for variety. Bring along a comfortable pair of shoes that can handle both exploration and relaxation. Additionally, consider packing a light jacket or jumper in case the weather turns cool.

As always, remember to bring your travel documents, a trusty camera or smartphone, and a positive mindset ready to embrace every moment of your four-day adventure.

In conclusion, a well-prepared short trip packing list is essential for a successful and enjoyable experience. Remember to prioritise comfort, versatility, and convenience when selecting clothing, footwear, and accessories.

Travel-sized toiletries, electronics, and necessary travel documents should be organised based on whether they belong in your checked baggage or carry-on.

Additionally, tailoring your packing list to the unique requirements of the occasion, season, and destination will help you make the most of your short trip and create lasting memories. Happy travels!
