The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Cunard Line cruise ship

Gene Sloan

Cunard Line is a relatively small cruise company with just three ships, but that doesn't mean it has a small footprint when it comes to places its ships go.

The storied passenger ship company — one of the oldest in the world with a history that dates back to 1840 — offers cruises to almost every corner of the globe.

The line's three vessels — Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria — are almost always on the move. (A fourth, Queen Anne, will join the globe-trotting fleet in spring 2024.) They operate diverse itineraries on multiple continents, including Europe, North America and Asia.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

They also often travel around the world on epic voyages that can last three months or more. For 2024, for instance, two of Cunard's three vessels will operate complete circumnavigations of the globe lasting many months (more on these below).

Among its many itinerary offerings, Cunard has a particularly large footprint in Europe, with all three of its vessels spending at least some time each year in the region. Asia is another big destination for Cunard, with all its ships heading there most years for at least a few sailings, too.

The line also regularly offers sailings in North America, including in the Caribbean, New England and Canada, and Alaska. Australia and New Zealand appear often on Cunard's itinerary schedule as well.

Cunard ships sail everything from super-short, two-night voyages between Southampton, England, and Hamburg, Germany, that don't include a single port call to 123-night globe-circling trips that take in dozens of ports.

Here are our picks for the five best Cunard cruise destinations.

The Atlantic

cunard cruise itinerary

If Cunard has an iconic itinerary, it is the regular transatlantic voyages that its flagship, the 2,691-passenger Queen Mary 2, operates between New York City and Southampton, England, throughout the year.

In most cases, these trips lack even a single port stop. They are one-way sailings designed to get you across the Atlantic in relative speed and comfort — just like the line offered in the 19th century. But unlike back then, they aren't voyages people take out of necessity.

Both leisure and business travelers can now travel between North America and Europe in a matter of hours on speedy jets, so there's no longer a pressing need for such transatlantic crossings on a practical level. But Cunard has been able to keep the tradition alive for a subset of travelers who enjoy moving between the continents in a more leisurely way.

For many people who take Queen Mary 2 across the Atlantic, the ship itself and the experience of the crossing on it is the destination. It's not uncommon for passengers to take Queen Mary 2 one way across the Atlantic just to experience a crossing before flying fly back home.

Related: Why I was wrong about transatlantic cruises

Queen Mary 2 was specifically built for such crossings, with a more streamlined shape and more powerful engines than traditional cruise ships. It can cut through the sometimes rough waves of the Atlantic at higher speeds and with more comfort for passengers.

Aficionados say Queen Mary 2 is a true ocean liner — a ship designed to sail a direct course across oceans between two far-apart destinations — not a cruise ship. It is thus something truly different in the world of cruises.

Having sailed across the Atlantic on Queen Mary 2 three times over the years, including on its maiden voyage in 2004, I couldn't agree more. There is nothing quite like zooming across the ocean on the vessel, which is built with a grand ballroom, elegant restaurants and other formal spaces that evoke the famed ocean liners of a century ago. It's a throwback to an earlier time.

In a typical year, Queen Mary 2 operates about 20 Atlantic crossings. In most cases, it makes the crossing in seven nights without any stops, but it sometimes does faster six-night crossings. It occasionally adds a stop in a destination along the way — Boston, for instance, or the Azores.

cunard cruise itinerary

In addition to transatlantic crossings, Cunard has long been known for epic around-the-world voyages, stopping at dozens of destinations on four, five or even six continents.

Cunard usually will send one and sometimes even two of its three ships on monthslong jaunts around the world every year, something it has done for many decades.

In a typical year, the line might begin one around-the-world sailing in New York or Florida, allowing Americans to travel across the globe without ever getting on a flight longer than a few hours. It'll also often offer an additional around-the-world sailing out of a European port such as Southampton.

That's the case for 2024, when Queen Mary 2 will sail a 123-night world voyage out of New York City, and the 2,061-passenger Queen Victoria will sail a 111-night world voyage out of Hamburg, Germany (the latter voyage also can be boarded in Southampton).

As is sometimes the case with such trips, the sailing on Queen Mary 2 won't be a full circumnavigation of the globe. The ship will travel eastward from New York to Europe and then Africa, Australia and Asia before returning westward to the Middle East and Europe (through the Suez Canal) on its way back to New York. It's a sailing that will hit large portions of the world but not complete the circle.

The Queen Victoria sailing will be a true circumnavigation, with the ship circling the world westward. The voyage will take the ship to Bermuda, Florida, the Panama Canal and the West Coast before a Pacific crossing to Hawaii, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand and Australia. From there, Queen Victoria will make multiple stops across Asia before cruising westward to the southern tip of Africa and then back to Europe up the west coast of Africa.

cunard cruise itinerary

In part due to the fact that it's based in Southampton and has a strong following among British travelers, Cunard has long had a particular focus on sailings in Europe. As of the publishing of this guide, 171 of the 451 departures on Cunard's schedule were devoted to Northern Europe, Western Europe or the Mediterranean. If you add in transatlantic departures between Europe and North America, that number jumps to 227 — almost exactly half of all departures on Cunard's schedule.

All three of Cunard's vessels spend at least part of the year sailing in Europe, with the biggest portion of sailings in the Mediterranean.

These Europe routings vary greatly in length and destinations. Unlike many of its competitors operating in Europe, Cunard offers lots of short sailings, sometimes as short as two or three nights, that provide a chance for a quick trip between, say, Hamburg and Southampton. Often, these short sailings are one way, on Queen Mary 2 and timed to lead straight into a transatlantic crossing.

Someone in Europe could board Queen Mary 2 in Hamburg for a two-night sailing to Southampton and then stay aboard for a subsequent seven-night sailing to New York City.

Cunard also often offers many round-trip "short break" getaways lasting three or four nights out of Southampton to places like Bruges, Belgium; Amsterdam; and Le Havre, France. These trips are mostly aimed at a local British crowd.

Additionally, Cunard operates many longer Europe itineraries, sometimes as long as 30 nights, which take in a dozen or more major destinations. A good example of the latter is the line's 28-night Mediterranean Highlights itinerary from Civitavecchia, Italy (the port for Rome) to Barcelona, a one-way trip that takes in a wide range of ports across Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, Malta, Spain and Turkey.

In the Mediterranean, the line's main hubs are Piraeus, Greece (the port for Athens); Istanbul; Trieste, Italy; Barcelona; and Civitavecchia.

In Northern Europe, Cunard's big hub is Southampton, but it also offers voyages out of Hamburg and Kiel in Germany.

cunard cruise itinerary

Cunard is one of a handful of Europe-based cruise lines devoting a ship to the Alaska market for the coming summer of 2024, deploying its 2,081-passenger Queen Elizabeth to the destination.

From June to September 2024, Queen Elizabeth will operate nearly a dozen round-trip sailings to Alaska out of Vancouver, British Columbia.

These Alaska voyages will mostly be 10 nights in length, which is longer than the typical Alaska sailing out of Vancouver. A handful of the sailings will be nine or 11 nights in length.

Cunard's typical 10-night Alaska sailing includes calls at Sitka, Ketchikan, Skagway and either Juneau or Icy Strait Point. The ship will also visit Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and Misty Fjords National Monument.

The 11-night sailings add stops at the smaller Alaska towns of Wrangell and Haines and a visit to Hubbard Glacier (in addition to Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and Misty Fjords National Monument). They skip the stops at Skagway and Sitka.

Asia, Australia and New Zealand

cunard cruise itinerary

Cunard usually sends at least one of its three ships to Asia, Australia and New Zealand every winter for sailings out of such major hubs as Tokyo (where ships sail from nearby Yokohama) and Sydney.

The line also typically sends one or two ships on around-the-world cruises every winter that include segments in Asia, Australia and New Zealand, resulting in all three of the line's vessels, in some cases, sailing in the regions during the winter. (See more on the line's world cruises above.)

Cunard ships typically offer a relatively wide mix of itineraries in the regions, never staying in the same part of Asia, Australia and New Zealand for too many voyages in a row.

That said, for 2024, Cunard's Queen Elizabeth will be based out of Tokyo for nearly two months for multiple sailings around Japan. These sailings typically also include a stop in either South Korea or Taiwan.

Among the Australia itineraries that Cunard has on its schedule for the next two years is a 14-night sailing to New Zealand out of Melbourne, Australia, with stops at New Zealand's Fiordland National Park, Wellington, New Plymouth, Bay of Island and Auckland (for an overnight visit).

Shorter sailings out of Australian ports include a five-night voyage from Sydney to Melbourne and Burnie — the latter destination in the Australian island state of Tasmania.

Bottom line

Despite its small size, Cunard offers a diverse array of itineraries in cruise destinations around the world, from North America to Asia. It's also well known for its transatlantic sailings between New York City and Southampton, plus its epic around-the-world cruises.

In August 2023, Cunard signed an exclusive partnership deal with Michel Albert Roux (1960-born, 2-star Michelin chef) to create Queens Grill Restaurant's Dala Dinner menu as well as a new menu for the Golden Lion Pub. Golden Lion's new menu was slated to be rolled out fleetwide in 2024.

There are four new/exclusive to the Queen Anne ship alternative dining venues/dinner-only restaurants - Aji Wa (Japanese cuisine, with menus reflecting the ship's current itinerary/seasonal deployment), Aranya (traditional Indian cuisine), Tramonto (authentic Mediterranean dishes with African and Arabic influences), and Sir Samuel's (premium seafood and steakhouse restaurant named after Cunard Line's founder Sir Samuel Cunard, 1st Baronet/1787-1865). These are specialty restaurants (reservations are required) with 3-course menus.

Aranya Rstaurant's menu was developed by Cunard Line’s Culinary Development Department (led by Gareth Bowen) in collaboration with master chef Surjan Singh "Jolly" (CEO and Director of the UK-based company Jolly Good Hospitality Ltd and Corporate Culinary Director of the company Speciality Hospitality UK Ltd). The menu features appetizers (Smoked Chilli Pork Belly, Sweet Potato Oats Tikki, Sweet Mini Pea, Mint & Goat's Cheese Quiche), main dishes (Roasted Wild Turbot, Caramelized Slow Roast Asian Beef Short Rib, Cauliflower Mushroom Masala, pot-sealed Welsh Lamb Biryani) and gourmet desserts (Gulab jamun, Passionfruit Hazelnut Nougat Mascarpone Cake; a Malai Kulfi with Lychee, Chaat Masala).

In September 2017 was officially announced the planned addition of a 4th vessel to Cunard's fleet. The investment (EUR 540 million / USD 600 million) was part of the shipowner's/ Carnival Corporation 's fleet expansion program, adding newbuilds to the fleets of its subsidiary companies and travel brands AIDA , Costa , Princess , P&O UK .

Cunard's shipbuilding contract (MoA/memorandum of agreement) with Fincantieri was signed on Sept 25, 2017.

In October 2018, Cunard contracted the company Tihany Design (led by Adam D Tihany) to oversee the interior design works on the newbuild, which back then was planned for inauguration in 2022. Adam Tihany's latest project started with the layouts of the onboard dining venues, including Cunard's traditional "class restaurants" Queens Grill and Princess Grill. Besides Tihany Design, other companies currently involved in this project include the London UK-based David Collins Studio (led by Simon Rawlings) and Richmond International (by Terry McGillicuddy) as well as the Paris France-based SM Desing (by Sybille de Margerie).

The vessel's construction (Marghera yard/hull number 6274) officially started on October 11, 2019, with the steel-cutting ceremony held at Fincantieri's production yard in Castellammare di Stabia (near Naples ). The special event was attended by Simon Palethorpe (Cunard's President), Gilberto Tobaldi (Fincantieri Castellammare Shipyard's Director) and Sam Shendi (British sculptor).

  • Sam Shendi was commissioned to create a unique artwork using as a core element the ship's ever-first piece of metal (the steel-cut) integrated into a sculpture that will be displayed in the Atrium. The Egypt-born Sam Shendi will create the sculpture using contemporary industrial materials, metals (steel and aluminum) and fiberglass.
  • The special ceremony was celebrated with a Grand Dinner held in Naples.

For choosing the cruise liner's name Cunard asked for assistance/research the British historian Kate Williams (1974-born). She is also an author of several British Royal Family-related books, as well as a TV presenter (at BBC Two and BBC4 series) and expert historian who specializes in social, constitutional and royal history. Kate Williams often appears in documentaries and TV and radio discussions themed on British history, literature and culture.

On April 29, 2022, at Castellammare di Stabia shipyard was launched the troncone (hull's forward lower/bow section) with which for the first time the vessel touched the water. The troncone (length 165 m/541 ft, width 35,6 m/117 ft, weight 12402 tons) was then towed by tugboats to Fincantieri's Marghera shipyard ( Venice ) where the boat will be completed.

The vessel's physical construction started on September 8, 2022, with the keel-laying ceremony at Marghera Yard. The ceremony was attended by Carnival UK's management team, as well as Fincantieri and Marghera yard employees. During the special event, into the hull's first keel block, the ship's Master (Captain Inger Klein Thorhauge) welded a unique/newly-minted ceremonial coin, together with an original Queen Anne crown coin.

The ship is powered by four MAK marine diesel engines (model 12V43C) with combined power output 50,4 MW. The propulsion system is based on two ABB Azipods (azimuth thrusters) with combined output 28 MW.

The name (Queen Anne) was officially announced by Cunard in February 2022. The boat's Master (Inger Klein Thorhauge) and some of the public areas were announced in March. Captain Thorhauge is Cunard Line's first female Captain and joined the company in 1997 as Second Officer on MS Vistafjord (1973-built/2017-scrapped as "Oasia", aka "MS Caronia" and "Saga Ruby"). Born in the Faroes, Thorhauge became MS Queen Victoria 's Captain in 2010. Queen Anne's Second Captain is David Hudson (with Cunard since 2006).

Cunard's newest liner (the 249th vessel under Cunard) is named after Anne (1665-1714) - The Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland (1702-1707) and The Queen of Great Britain (1707-1714). During her reign (on May 1, 1707) the kingdoms of England and Scotland were united into Great Britain. In 1714, Queen Anne was succeeded by her second cousin - King George I (1660-1727).

On April 14, 2023, on the superstructure was mounted the funnel, traditionally for Cunard painted in red and black.

The ship was launched/floated out from drydock on May 3, 2023 - exactly 365 days before the Maiden Voyage (May 3rd, 2024, out of Southampton). The special event was attended by Sture Myrmell (Carnival UK's President) and Luigi Matarazzo (Fincantieri Merchant Ships Division's General Manager).

In September 2023, Cunard announced Queen Anne's senior officers for the maiden voyage - Inger Klein Thorhauge (Master Captain), Yuliyan Kostov (Deputy Captain), Jon Cammish (Chief Engineer), Robert Howie (Hotel General Manager), and Stuart Smart (Human Resources Manager).

The 16-day North Sea trials were conducted in February 2024, under Captain Inger Thorhauge. The first sea trials included checking, extreme testing, assessing and calibrating all systems (power/engines, propulsion, stabilizers).

MS Queen Anne ship's christening ceremony is currently scheduled for June 3, 2024, to be held dockside in during the celebratory "The British Isles Festival Voyage". The special event will take place short after sunrise and will be hosted by Mathew James Willis (1983-born English musician/singer/songwriter, TV personality, actor, co-founder and co-vocalist of Busted/pop-punk band) and Emma Louise Willis (1976-born English TV broadcaster).

The next image is the July 2023-released by Cunard Queen Anne ship's cutaway made by Dominik Bulka (Wroclaw Poland-born illustrator and graphic designer). The image showcases many of the ship's signature venues and public spaces.

In September 2023, Cunard signed a 3-year partnership with BFI UK for MS Queen Anne. By the deal, in the period 2024-2027, in all passengers' staterooms and at The Pavilion (top-deck outdoor Cinema/LED screen) will be shown short films and blockbuster movies (10 every month). The Queen Anne-exclusive partnership deal was signed by Katie McAlister (Cunard's President) and Francesca Vinti (BFI's Director of Fundraising and Enterprise). BFI (British Film Institute) is a 1933-founded charitable organization promoting and preserving the UK's film production and distribution. BFI is funded by the National Lottery (1994-established) and is also sponsored by DCMS (UK's Department for Culture, Media and Sport).

Illness outbreak spreads on cruise ship, leaving 154 sick

An illness outbreak aboard a Cunard Cruise Line ship has spread , now leaving at least 154 people experiencing symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A total of 129 passengers and 25 crew members on the Queen Victoria have reported being ill during the voyage, an increase of 15 people from when the illness was reported on Feb. 1.

The cause of the gastrointestinal disease outbreak aboard the Queen Victoria cruise, which departed Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Jan. 22, is currently unknown.

The ship is scheduled to dock in Honolulu on Feb. 12.

The Queen Victoria has 1,824 passengers and 967 crew members on board.

The cruise line reported it would increase cleaning and disinfection procedures according to its outbreak prevention and response plan, isolate ill passengers and crew and inform current and embarking passengers and crew of the situation on board.

The CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program is monitoring the situation and reviewing the ship's outbreak response and sanitation procedures.

Cunard Cruise Line confirmed that guests aboard the Queen Victoria had fallen ill in a statement to ABC News.

"Cunard confirms that a number of guests had reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness on board Queen Victoria on voyage V405 which departed Florida on [Jan. 22] and arrived in San Francisco on [Feb. 7]. They immediately activated their enhanced health and safety protocols to ensure the wellbeing of all guests and crew on board and these measures have been effective," the company said in a statement.

Cunard’s Culinary Team Showcased on ‘Les Stroud’s Wild Harvest’

  • March 13, 2024

Culinary Team

Cunard’s culinary team will be featured in season three of Les Stroud’s TV series Wild Harvest, according to a press release.

The program features “Survivorman” Les Stroud and Master Chef Paul Rogalski alongside Queen Elizabeth’s culinary team in Alaska. Season three, which airs this April, was shot in the ports of Sitka, Haines, Juneau, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan while sailing through Hubbard Glacier.

During the Alaskan adventure, Stroud shares his knowledge of wild edibles with local foragers, gathering ingredients such as sour dock, beach parsley, false lily of the valley, bullwhip kelp and lily bulb. The wild ingredients are then presented to Chef Rogalski and members of the Cunard culinary team to create gourmet dishes together.

Queen Elizabeth Executive Chef Roland Sargunan and members of his culinary team create dishes such as Alaskan Seafood with Sour Dock Chimichurri, Beach Parsley; Alaska Smoked Salmon with Buttered Sour Dock, Beach Parsley Salad; Bullwhip Peri Peri Chicken; Bullwhip Kelp Marinate Duck; and Essence of King Bolete with Soy Stained Chocolate Lilies, Beach Greens.

“Sailing on Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth in Alaska offered Chef Paul and me the opportunity to share the bounty of the wilderness in a unique way with our viewers. Approaching these port towns by sea and learning about the natural beauty of these coastal waterways all while enjoying the luxury of a Cunard vessel provided a completely new experience to my team,” said Les Stroud.

“Cunard is proud to be part of the acclaimed television program Wild Harvest to showcase our culinary team while bringing the Alaskan wildness onboard to our guests and viewers around the globe,” said Katie McAlister, president of Cunard.

Nearly 100 Holland America cruise passengers become ill in norovirus outbreak

cunard cruise itinerary

Nearly 100 Holland America Line passengers got sick in a norovirus outbreak.

Among 2,522 guests on the cruise line’s Koningsdam ship, 98 reported being ill, along with 12 crew members, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . Their main symptoms were diarrhea and vomiting.

Koningsdam is currently sailing a round-trip cruise visiting Hawaii and French Polynesia that departed from San Diego on Feb. 17, according to CruiseMapper . Holland America and the ship’s crew increased cleaning and disinfection and isolated sick passengers and crew following the outbreak, among other steps, the CDC said.

“At Holland America Line, the safety and well-being of our guests and crew is our top priority. During the current voyage, a number of guests on Koningsdam reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness,” a spokesperson for the line told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. “The cases were mostly mild and quickly resolving. We initiated enhanced sanitation protocols to minimize further transmission and the incidence of cases has since declined significantly.”

The news comes after more than 125 Cunard Line passengers got sick in a gastrointestinal illness outbreak earlier this year. Norovirus cases have also risen in the U.S. in recent weeks.

The CDC logged 14 cruise ship outbreaks that met its threshold for public notification in 2023, more than any year between 2017 and 2019. Norovirus was listed as the causative agent in all but one.

The virus is frequently associated with cruises, but Ben Lopman, a professor of epidemiology at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health, told USA TODAY last year that cruises make up a "tiny minority of norovirus outbreaks.” The majority take place in health care settings such as nursing homes.
