3. Best Snorkeling In The World

With crystal clear waters and abundant marine life, this country boasts some of the best snorkeling spots in the world.

I know, it’s a large claim to make. However, if it’s so great that I spend over $200.00 on excursions in a couple of days while backpacking Belize on a budget . Also, my Australian friend who has snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef said it is way better here!

Swim alongside colorful coral reefs and exotic fish while discovering shipwrecks and underwater caves. The famous Great Blue Hole, a large submarine sinkhole off the coast of Belize, is a must-see for any avid snorkeler.

Home to hundreds of species of marine life, including sharks and sea turtles, this natural wonder is truly breathtaking.

Other popular snorkeling destinations in Belize include:

  • Laughing Bird Caye National Park
  • Hol Chan Marine Reserve
  • Shark Ray Alley

4. A Lot Safer Than You May Expect

When traveling to a foreign country, safety is always a top concern. However, Belize has made great strides in recent years to improve its overall security and safety for tourists. In fact, the country’s crime rate has significantly decreased in the past decade.

Most of the crime and safety concerns is in relation to Belize City, the largest city in the country and a common starting point for tourists. However, the majority of tourists don’t stay here and instead hop on a ferry to the island or a shuttle heading inland.

The key to staying safe while traveling in Belize is to use common sense and exercise caution as you would when visiting any new country. By following a few simple guidelines, you can minimize any potential risks and enjoy your trip to the fullest.

Some tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in Belize include:

  • Avoid traveling alone at night
  • Stay aware of your surroundings
  • Use reputable tour companies for excursions
  • Respect local laws and customs
  • Don’t flaunt expensive belongings or large amounts of cash

5. Incredible Wildlife

Animal lovers rejoice. Aside from its stunning beaches and crystal clear waters, Belize is also home to a diverse range of wildlife.

With over 600 species of birds, 145 species of mammals, and countless reptiles, insects, and marine creatures, the country is a nature lover’s paradise.

One of the best places to experience the rich biodiversity of Belize is at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world’s first jaguar reserve. Here, you can spot these majestic cats in their natural habitat along with other exotic animals like howler monkeys, tapirs, and toucans.

For a more aquatic adventure, head to one of Belize’s many marine reserves where you can swim alongside colorful fish, turtles, and even nurse sharks.

6. There Is Something For Everyone

Another reason why Belize is a top destination for travelers is its diverse range of destinations to explore.

Ambergris Caye : The largest island in Belize, Ambergris Caye is a hot spot for water sports and has the Western Hemisphere’s largest barrier reef. This spectacular site is perfect for scuba diving and snorkeling, with abundant marine life and pristine coral formations.

Caye Caulker : This small limestone coral island in the Caribbean Sea is beloved for its laid-back vibe, and it’s a perfect spot for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying fresh seafood.

Placencia : Known for its exquisite beaches, Placencia is a charming, low-key fishing village that offers dolphin watching, diving, and lagoon kayaking. It’s also a gateway to the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary.

Caracol : For history enthusiasts, a visit to Caracol, the largest Mayan site in Belize, is a must. Located in the Cayo District, Caracol is home to ancient ruins, including the towering Caana pyramid.

Blue Hole National Park : This park is famous for its stunning sapphire-blue sinkhole, where divers can explore underwater caves and see unique stalactite formations. It’s also a great place for hiking and bird-watching.

San Ignacio: A hub for eco-tourism, San Ignacio offers a variety of outdoor activities such as zip-lining, horseback riding, and cave tubing. It’s also a great base for exploring nearby archaeological sites like Xunantunich.

7. Adventure Activities

Aside from the beautiful scenery, Belize also offers a wide range of adventure activities that cater to all levels of thrill-seekers. From water sports to jungle expeditions, there’s something for everyone in this tropical paradise.

Water Sports : With its crystal clear waters and diverse marine life, it’s no surprise that Belize is a top destination for water sports. Popular activities include snorkeling, diving, and fishing. The Belize Barrier Reef is the second-largest barrier reef in the world and provides endless opportunities for underwater exploration.

Cave Tubing : One of the most unique activities in Belize is cave tubing, where you float down underground rivers on an inner tube while admiring the incredible rock formations and ancient Mayan artifacts.

Jungle Expeditions : For those looking for a more adventurous experience, Belize’s lush jungles offer endless opportunities. From hiking through dense forests to rappelling down waterfalls, there’s no shortage of adrenaline-pumping activities in the jungle.

Ziplining : For an unforgettable experience, visitors can soar through the treetops of Belize’s rainforests on a zipline tour. This activity provides a bird’s eye view of the breathtaking landscapes and is sure to get your heart racing.

ATM Cave Tour: One of the most thrilling activities in Belize is exploring the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave. This cave system is home to ancient Mayan artifacts and human remains, and you can only access it by swimming through underground rivers and navigating dark chambers. This no doubt was a highlight of my trip.

Learn To Dive: With the Belize Barrier Reef at your doorstep, it’s the perfect opportunity to learn how to scuba dive. Many resorts and tour companies offer scuba diving courses for beginners, allowing them to experience the underwater world and its vibrant marine life.

8. Easy To Get Around Between Towns / Islands

In Belize, it’s easy to get around between towns and islands thanks to reliable public transportation and tour companies.

Buses are a popular mode of transportation for longer distances, while water taxis are readily available for island hopping.

You can even find regular tourist shuttles that take you directly to popular destinations such as Belize City to San Ignacio , making it convenient for travelers to explore multiple areas during their stay.

For a more luxurious option, visitors can also hire private transfers or rent a car to explore at their own pace.

9. Friendly Locals

Belizeans are known for their warm hospitality and friendly nature. They are always willing to help and share their country’s rich culture and history with visitors.

Don’t be surprised if you strike up a conversation with a local and end up being invited to a home-cooked meal or shown around lesser-known spots in the area. Their kindness truly adds to the overall experience

10. Foodie Delights

Belizean cuisine is a fusion of flavors from its diverse population, including Mayan, Creole, Garifuna, and Mestizo influences.

Seafood is abundant and often featured in dishes such as ceviche and coconut-based soups. You can also find traditional dishes like rice and beans with stewed chicken or pork, as well as delicious street food options.

For more adventurous palates, there are even options for trying traditional dishes using unique ingredients like iguana or gibnut (a rodent-like mammal).

The country is also known for its delicious rum and local breweries, making it a perfect destination for food and drink enthusiasts.

Don’t forget to try the famous Belizean hot sauce, Marie Sharp’s, which can be found in almost every restaurant and household. It also makes for a great souvenir that you can bring home!

11. It’s Small But Mighty

Despite being the second smallest country in Central America, Belize has a lot to offer. From pristine beaches and lush rainforests to ancient Mayan ruins and diverse wildlife, there is no shortage of activities for visitors to enjoy.

12. English Speaking Country

Belize stands out as the only country in the region with English as its official language. This advantage greatly facilitates travel and communication for English-speaking visitors exploring this beautiful nation.

Now when I visited Belize for the first time I had just spent a month in Mexico putting my Spanish lessons into practice. Sure I was able to get around, ask basic questions, and do general travel stuff, but I couldn’t have in-depth conversations with the locals.

As a more introverted traveler, I didn’t think I would miss this before I arrived in Belize but boy was I wrong. It was so much easier to connect with the locals and learn more about their culture and way of life because we could effectively communicate without any language barriers.

13. World Class Diving

As I said earlier Belize is home to the second largest barrier reef in the world, making it a popular destination for scuba divers and snorkelers.

With crystal clear waters, diverse marine life, and unique diving sites like the famous Blue Hole, Belize offers some of the best diving experiences in the world.

After learning to dive in Roatan I knew I had to come back to Belize to explore deeper than I did on snorkeling tours from San Pedro or Caye Caulker .

Booking myself in for a second trip to San Pedro with my partner we spent a week exploring the underwater world by diving from Ambergris Caye . We saw countless turtles, nurse sharks, various sting rays, and my favorite the Caribbean Reef Sharks.

There was even a dive where we had Caribbean Reef Sharks surrounding us from the moment we descended through the whole hour until we ascended again!

14. Sustainable Tourism

The government of Belize has made efforts to protect its natural resources and promote sustainable tourism.

This includes strict regulations on fishing, hunting, and land development near the coast to preserve the delicate marine ecosystem and protect endangered species.

Visitors are also encouraged to practice responsible tourism by supporting local businesses, using eco-friendly products, and participating in conservation efforts such as beach cleanups or volunteering at wildlife sanctuaries.

Some of my favorite conservation projects I checked out during my backpacking Belize adventures included the Iguana Eco Sanctuary in San Pedro and the Green Iguana Conservation Project in San Ignacio.

16. Impressive Caves

Aside from the beautiful beaches and marine life, Belize also has a stunning network of underground caves.

These caves have been used for centuries by the Mayan people for spiritual ceremonies and rituals, and now serve as popular tourist attractions for activities such as cave tubing, hiking, and cave diving.

One of the most impressive caves I explored was Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM), also known as the Cave of the Stone Sepulcher.

This cave is home to ancient Mayan artifacts and human remains, making it a truly unique and awe-inspiring experience.

the impressive rock formations inside the atm cave, a highlight for many people wondering why visit belize

17. Get The Real Deserted Island Experience

Belize has over 200 small islands, or cayes, scattered along its coast.

Some of these Cayes are inhabited and offer luxury resorts and tourist activities, while others remain untouched and provide the perfect setting for a secluded getaway.

I highly recommend taking a trip to one of these uninhabited cayes for a true deserted island experience.

You can spend your days lounging on white sand beaches, snorkeling in crystal clear waters, and camping under the stars.

If you can afford to take a sailing tour with Raggamuffin Tours, you won’t regret it.

Their trips include stops at uninhabited cayes and offer an authentic island experience while also supporting responsible tourism practices. I, unfortunately, wasn’t able to do this while I was backpacking as they were taking a break over the easter holidays, but next time I am in Belize and have a few days free that is definitely on my list!

18. Not overly touristy

One of the things I loved most about Belize was that it didn’t feel overly touristy.

While there are certainly popular tourist destinations and activities, such as Ambergris Caye, I found that they weren’t overrun with tourists.

The local people were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making me feel like I was experiencing an authentic culture and not just a tourist attraction.

I also appreciated that there weren’t tacky souvenir shops at every corner, and the locals seemed genuinely interested in getting to know visitors rather than just selling them something. It’s refreshing to visit a place where tourism hasn’t taken over completely.

19. Perfect For Relaxation And Adventure

Belize offers the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

Whether you’re looking to lounge on a quiet beach or go zip-lining through the rainforest, there’s something for everyone.

The laid-back Caribbean lifestyle allows for plenty of downtime, while the country’s diverse landscape provides endless opportunities for exploration.

You can spend your days snorkeling in the Belize Barrier Reef, or hiking through lush jungles and spotting exotic wildlife.

And at the end of a busy day, you can relax with a Belikin beer in hand and watch the stunning sunset over the turquoise waters.

20. Can Be Affordable

Belize may seem like a destination only for the wealthy, but it can actually be quite affordable.

There are plenty of budget-friendly accommodations and activities available throughout the country.

You can find inexpensive guesthouses and hostels, or even camp on some of the islands.

Local street food and markets also offer delicious and cheap dining options. And if you plan your trip during the off-season, you can save even more money.

So don’t let your budget hold you back from experiencing all that Belize has to offer. I met plenty other backpackers and budget travelers during my time there, from all corners of the globe.

Easy-to-use travel guide for Belize

Why visit Belize? Here are 10 Good Reasons

October 23, 2022 By Lorenzo Gonzalez

Ziplining in Belize at Mayflower Bocawina

A Caribbean paradise in Central America, Belize offers the adventure of a lifetime with the opportunity to enjoy an amazing beach and jungle vacation easily.

Related: Best Time To Visit Belize and Plan Your Belize Trip

Widely known for diving and snorkeling, Belize is home to the world’s second-largest barrier reef, which includes the famous Great Blue Hole. However, for tourists that venture past Belize’s popular cayes , atolls , and coastal beach towns, pristine jungles await, filled with wildlife, ancient Maya sites, and rich cultural experiences.

10 reasons why you should visit Belize

1. unique and fun adventures.

Diving with Whale Sharks in Placencia ,Belize

The key to having good conversations is having interesting stories. And after visiting Belize, you’ll have plenty of unique-adventure stories to share. For example, in Belize, you can  swim with whale sharks and river tube through sacred Maya caves .

2. Incredible hiking experiences

Family at ATM Cave

Hiking in Belize offers rare experiences. Imagine that after a two-hour jungle hike, you end up at the mouth of the no. 1 cave on National Geographic’s list of “Sacred Places of a Lifetime”. The Actun Tunichil Muknal adventure involves swimming into the cave and squeezing yourself through narrow crevices until arriving at a central atrium filled with old Maya pots, cool rock formations, and sacrificial remains.

3. Belize is a divers’ paradise

The Great Blue Hole is part of Belize's Barrier Reef

Belize is home to the world-famous Great Blue Hole . C’mon, any serious diver already knew this! Come cross it off your bucket list and also take advantage of being here and dive many other top diving sites in Belize .

4. Access to the Mayan heartland

Lamanai's mask temple

Since Belize was once the Mayan heartland, the country has the highest concentration of Maya archaeological sites . My favourite site is Xunantunich in San Ignacio but Lamanai is probably the most popular. Also, famous sites such as Tikal in Guatemala and Chichen Itza in Mexico are also just a few hours away.

5. Perfect for relaxing

Secret Beach on Ambergris Caye

If you’re commuting during rush hour you’re bound to get the “evil eye” from someone having a bad day, right? Not in Belize. Belizeans are always friendly , wearing a big smile and are never in a hurry. So when you’re in Belize, put your feet up, relax, and learn to Go Slow !

6. Waterfalls and rivers are everywhere

Swim at the waterfalls at the Cockscomb Basin

If you, by any chance, thought that you could only swim in the Caribbean sea when in Belize, you’re missing the big picture. The country has plenty of rivers, creeks, ponds, and lagoons. And many of the nature reserves such as Mountain Pine Ridge and the Cockscomb pair hiking with waterfall chasing.

7. Simple, amazing food

Conch-seasonal-belize-delicacy

Belizean cuisine is an amalgamation of the various cultures ( Mestizo , Maya , Creole , and Garifuna ) that call the country home. Expect to eat fry jacks and refried beans for breakfast and rice and beans with stew chicken for lunch. Once you’re here for a week, you’ll quickly adapt to eating like a local .

8. Abundant wildlife and nature

Tourist and Howler Monkey

Belize offers easy access to wildlife and nature. Imagine being alone, paddling down the river and hearing the various sounds of birds and other wildlife such as howler monkeys . Everywhere in Belize is surrounded by nature, offering easy access to the outdoors year-round.

9. World-class snorkeling

Coral Reefs, Hol Chan

After Australia, Belize has the largest barrier reef in the world , and it is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For anyone who loves swimming among beautiful fishes, sharks, stingrays, and other marine wildlife, snorkeling in Belize  is a must!

10. Approx. 450 islands dot Belize’s coast

Half Moon Caye is a part of Lighthouse Reef Atoll

Whether you want to stay in Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Tobacco Caye, or Half Moon Caye, Belize has many islands and atolls to explore. Your options include enjoying luxury accommodations at some of the best beach destinations in Belize or visiting remote coral atolls where you can pitch a tent and sleep under the stars. Choose a budget and there’s an island that will be perfect for you.

Convinced yet? What other reasons would you add to this list?

8 reasons Belize should be on your travel bucket list

Ben Smithson

Editor's note: The team at The Points Guy loves to travel, but now is not the time for unnecessary trips. Health officials note that the fastest way to return to normalcy is to stop coming in contact with others. That includes ceasing travel. We are publishing travel deals and destination content because we should all use this time to think about and plan our next adventures. TPG doesn't advise booking trips for travel until the late spring or early summer — and even then be mindful of cancellation policies.

You may be familiar with popular destinations like Mexico and Costa Rica when dreaming about a Central American vacation. I recently traveled through the region and fell in love with the lesser-known country of Belize .

While you may not be able to travel right now, if you're stuck at home, now is a great time to research new adventures for when you can travel again. Here's why you should consider adding Belize to your bucket list.

1. No Spanish required

Belize is the only country in Central America with English as its official language. Why? The country was declared a colony of the British Empire in 1862, known then as British Honduras. While many locals also speak a native, regional Creole language (and many also speak Spanish given the country's close geographic proximity to Mexico and Guatemala ), most speak fluent English.

You won't have any issues speaking English 100% of the time with locals there, which makes it very easy to travel through the country .

2. There's a fantastic mix of Caribbean and Latino culture

The first thing that struck me about Belize when I arrived in the country was the accents -- locals sounded far more like they were from Barbados rather than Spain . Why is this? Because Belize is known as the bridge between the Caribbean and Central America. While geographically in Central America, the British colonization has added a culture similar to British-colonized Caribbean Islands. This proved to be a great mix -- for example, cuisine-wise you can expect to find the Mexican food you'll know and love but also delicious Caribbean food like jerk chicken and fresh, simply grilled seafood.

To drink, there's tequila sitting right alongside rum punch.

Both the Central American and Caribbean cultures are vibrant and colorful, especially when it comes to music and scenery, and they go wonderfully well side by side in Belize.

3. Caye Caulker is possibly the most relaxing place in the world

My favorite place in Belize was the tiny island of Caye Caulker, which is an easy boat ride from Belize City, the largest city in the country. It is un-Belize-ably relaxing. The island's motto is "go slow," which means slow down, relax and take it easy. A local actually politely reminded me of this as I was walking down the street -- I needed to relax and slow down.

And it was wonderful.

If you have a picture of a beautiful remote tropical island with hammocks and palm trees gently swaying in the breeze, Caye Caulker is all that and more . Brightly painted little beach huts, no cars, freshly cooked seafood and endless sunshine was a perfect mix to bliss out in. The caye is so narrow you can easily walk from one side to the other in five minutes. This means there are no worries about transport around the island -- you easily (and slowly!) walk everywhere.

4. World-class snorkeling

You may not know this, but Belize has the second largest barrier reef in the world. The largest is the famous Great Barrier Reef in Far North Queensland, Australia . I'm Australian and have snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef several times. I would rate the snorkeling in Belize as good, if not better, than Australia. In a single snorkeling trip , I saw:

  • Hundreds of fish
  • Huge stingrays
  • Turtles (this was the highlight!)
  • Dozens of nurse sharks

I've snorkeled all over the world and can't remember anywhere else where I have seen so many different aquatic animals all in one place. You don't need a scuba diving qualification to see all these -- just a snorkel.

5. From the beach to the rainforest

Most visitors to Belize split their time between a beachy destination like Caye Caulker or Ambergis Caye, and a rainforest stop farther inland -- San Ignacio is a popular forest base to explore nearby attractions. Given the small size of the country, you can easily get from one to the other in half a day.

For me, this was the best of both worlds -- waking up at the beach in Caye Caulker, having one last walk down the peaceful, relaxing island and then heading into the lush, green, beautiful rainforest farther inland to continue the journey. San Ignacio is famous for eco-lodges where you can truly get back to nature.

6. Caving adventures

There's plenty to do and see around San Ignacio, but the main reason people come is to visit the Actun Tunichil Muknal caves , more commonly known as the ATM caves. The National Geographic Society has declared the ATM caves to be the most sacred caves in the world. Visiting them was a unique experience, combining the adventure of caving with unique Mayan history. With our expert guide, we walked through the rainforest and then into the caves where the terrain ranged from dry rocks through to deep water.

It was a fun and exciting way to learn about how the ancient civilizations used the cave system and also a great way to get some proper exercise while traveling.

Pair of juvenile green iguanas.

7. It was not as expensive as I was expecting

In my research before visiting Belize I had consistently heard the same thing -- for Central America, it was expensive. Not Maldives or St Lucia expensive, but noticeably more expensive than its neighboring countries that are very cheap to visit.

While it was slightly more expensive than Mexico and Guatemala it was not an overly costly destination. Especially in Caye Caulker, you just need to be sensible about the realities of being on an island. Items that could be sourced locally were very affordable. A liter of (very) freshly squeezed orange juice was only $2.50. Happy Hours could score you two glasses of rum punch for $5 (total). Freshly caught seafood, grilled and served with rice and beans and salad was affordable, too.

A local specialty is "Fry Jacks' -- a delicious mix of breakfast ingredients (like bacon and eggs) inside a fluffy, deep-fried dough that looks a little like a Cornish pasty. These are made fresh to order, will definitely fill you up and cost all of $2.50.

If you are looking for imported ingredients they will be expensive because of the importation process -- there was an Italian restaurant on Caye Caulker serving Italian cheese and wine that was not cheap at roughly about $30 per person for pasta, wine and dessert.

8. Mayan ruins everywhere

While neighboring Guatemala and Mexico are well known for their Mayan ruins , Belize actually has more Mayan ruins per square mile than any other country. There's plenty to choose from and San Ignacio is also very close to the Guatemalan border if you want to pop over to see the nearby famous Tikal ruins.

How to get there on points and miles

There are plenty of flights from major U.S. gateway airports.

You can fly American Airlines from Dallas (DFW), Miami (MIA), and Los Angeles (LAX) to Belize City. Fly Delta from Atlanta (ATL). I would recommend spending as little time in Belize City as possible -- the best the country has to offer is outside of the city.

Bottom line

Belize surprised and delighted me -- again, you'd better Belize-it! It was an easy, affordable, beautiful country to visit that had everything I was looking for to relax, educate and excite me.

While you may not be able to travel right now, you should definitely add Belize to your bucket list.

Top Ten Reasons Why You Should Visit Belize

Trying to make up your mind on why you should visit Belize? The country may be small, covering only 8,867 square miles, but don’t let its size deceive you. But if you like going a little bit off the beaten track to experience a unique adventure vacation, Belize may be just what you are looking for. Here is our list of the Top Ten Reasons Why You Should Visit Belize.

Maya mask Lamanai pyramid Belize

Table of Contents

The great blue hole, the beaches, ease of travel, diving and snorkeling, belizean food, islands and more islands, cockscomb basin reserve, the weather.

Belize is chock full of Maya Ruins. I mean they are all over the place. A few have been excavated over the years so that Belizeans and visitors can enjoy them. As the cradle of the ancient Maya Civilization, Belize has literally more Maya Ruins per square mile than any other country . A couple of them are practically a couple hundred yards off a main highway – for example Xunantunich . It is hard to find another country with so many of these majestic pyramids within walking or hitchhiking distance.

howler monkey in the rainforest

Belize has a low population density. A little over 400,000 people living in an area slightly larger than El Salvador. There is little to none industrial development. Commercial activity is very slow. Yes, the country is seriously underdeveloped – and very poor. The plus side of this reality is that there is so much bush and tropical rainforest available for wildlife to flourish. The government and people know this is an attraction for tourists and go out of their way to protect wild animals and birds so that you can enjoy them in their natural habitat. Almost everywhere in Belize is surrounded by nature’s bounty, offering easy access to the rainforest and wildlife outdoors year-round.The country is home to the world’s only Jaguar preserve, some 128,000 acres in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary in the south – and of course a whole lot of animals and birds also live there including this adorable howler monkey!

great blue hole

This natural wonder is synonymous with the name Belize. Yes, the ocean has a hole in it and it is a couple miles off the coast of Belize and so distinctive it can be seen from outer space. This gigantic cave is about half a mile in diameter and was once inland. But it became part of the ocean millennia ago, then collapsed to make a spectacular sea hole some 500 feet deep. You would need a mini-sub to get all the way to the bottom! It is one of the biggest attractions for SCUBA divers, and even snorkelers who may just want to paddle around and say they have been in the Great Blue Hole .

a beach somewhere on Ambergris Caye

O.K., we do not have many beaches and no big beaches – Florida has more beaches than Belize. But our beaches, while small and few, are spectacularly beautiful, uncrowded, and some are right next to the tropical rainforest. The best beaches are in the south and snug right up to crystal-clear turquoise colored waters. Did we mention that the water temperature is so mild you can jump in even in winter? And with dozens of little islands and atolls sprinkled all along its coast, the visitor can find many small but sandy and beautiful beaches for a day trip of weekend picnic.

Because of its small size, it is easy to get around Belize. By road, sea or air, the entire country can be traversed in a day. But of course it is easier to spend a week or two visiting different areas. Many tourists hire a car for a couple of days and take off along the bumpy highways to explore inland areas and wildlife parks. Its strategic location in northern Central America makes Belize an easy two hour flight from most U.S. destinations. If you are coming from the south, it is two hours from Costa Rica or Cuba and we have flights every day of the week from all major U.S. and Latin American carriers.

sea turtle and divers

The Great Belize Barrier Reef runs the entire length of Belize, starting with Quintana Roo, Mexico in the North, and ending in the south at the border with Puerto Barrios Guatemala. It is as if the barrier reef was designed especially for Belize! This natural formation means that almost the entire coast of Belize is within protected waters – no big breakers here. But brave surfers and even para sailors can venture outside the reef for action. Between the reef and the coast you can find some of the best diving in the Caribbean. World-class diving is especially attractive off the several atolls that dot our coast.

belizean-seafood-500

The Michelin Guide is not going to come to Belize any time soon. But the many cultures that make up this little country guarantee gourmet meals in Belize Cuisine that will intrigue your palate. Being a maritime state, Belize enjoys a bounty of seafood and most restaurants will be happy to serve up your favorite lobster, sea bass, shrimp, conch, swordfish and fish fillet. Fresh fruit and vegetables abound in the interior and are shipped daily to all areas of the country – anything from papayas, mangoes, kiwi fruit, watermelon, melons, soursop and pineapples. We are a major producer of oranges and grape fruit so enjoy these refreshing natural juices any way you want!

islands-placencia-550

There are about 100 habitable and even more “visitable” islands scattered all over the Belizean coast, from tiny comic book one acre islands with a dozen coconut trees, to big atolls such as Turneffe, and anything in between. Charter a live-aboard or a small boat with captain and take off to visit one of these emerald gems. Spend the day swimming, diving, or nursing a cold one while lazing on a hammock while the captain cooks the day’s catch on the beach. Or rest and camp out for the night then sail off to visit another island!

In Belize, jaguars rule the land. And the best place to catch a glimpse of these striking wildcats is Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. This sprawling reserve was founded in the 1980s to protect Belize’s endangered species. Today, Cockscomb also houses ocelots, pumas, peccaries, tapirs, king vultures, armadillos, otters, along with hundreds of native birds. The sanctuary contains 12 miles of nature trails that span across the 150-square-mile sanctuary. You’ll likely only have time (and strength) to mosey up a few marked trails, so choose wisely.

Recent visitors praised the reserve’s beautiful scenery, but some noted the trails are challenging. Still, most said the hikes were worth it simply for the picturesque vistas of the southern tip of the country. Increase your chances of seeing active wildlife by visiting at the beginning of the rainy season or on cooler, cloudy days when animals are more likely to be active.

The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary welcomes visitors daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The entrance fee is 10 Belize dollars (or $5). If you’re driving, you can reach the sanctuary from Belize City in about two and a half hours. Take the Western Highway, turn left at Hummingbird Highway, then right onto Southern Highway, and finally turn at Maya Center. For more information, check out the Belize Audubon Society’s Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary page .

belizean-sunset-550

Belize is in the tropics, and of course the weather is warm almost year round making for an ideal vacation. Leave those bone crunching winters and frost behind! The average annual temperature is 84F (29C). It can get hot in the summer, but that’s why we have the beaches and fun water activities. In the winter it rarely goes below 65F so even during the Christmas Holidays visitors can be having fun outdoors, and yes, be out on the beach.

10 Reasons to Visit Belize

reasons to travel to belize

After travelling through Guatemala, the final stop on my Central America itinerary was Belize. Crossing the border from Guatemala to Belize was a surreal experience in itself; armed border police watched on as we dragged our wheelie cases through the ‘no mans land’ between both countries.

I didn’t expect to see or feel a whole lot of difference as soon as we crossed the border, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Despite being located next to one another, the identities of Guatemala and Belize are a world apart. Guatemala is full of vibrancy, colour and has a strong Hispanic cultural influence, with Spanish being the first language.

In contrast, Belize has a much more laid-back Caribbean vibe and being located right on the Caribbean sea, there is a geographical logic to this strong cultural influence. Like much of the Caribbean, English is the first language in Belize. The country has become an on-trend honeymoon destination in recent years, and after visiting for myself, it’s evident why.

And if that hasn’t tempted you enough, here are 10 reasons to visit Belize…

1.The Islands and Beaches

Whether you’re on the mainland coastline or one of the many Belizean Islands, the beaches in Belize are beautiful. Expect to find palm-fringed beaches with powder-soft sand, aqua marine waters and serious Island vibes. Parrot Cove in Hopkins Beach on the mainland was our base in Belize and is an ideal option if you’re short on time and don’t have time to get out to the islands.

2. English is the first language

Belize is the only country in Central America where English is the first language. This may not seem like a big deal, but if you want to go off the beaten track and don’t speak any Spanish, Belize is a much more accessible option.

3. The Caribbean Influence

From the vegetation to the stilt-houses and the food to the hospitality, Caribbean influence is everywhere in Belize. Many Belizeans have Caribbean heritage and the national spirit is of course, Rum!

4. The Ancient Mayan Ruins

One thing that does unite Guatemala and Belize is that they are both part of the Ancient Mayan world, which also includes Mexico, X and El Salvador. Because of this, Belize is home to a series of fascinating Mayan sites including Xunantunich, which is located 10 minutes drive from the Belize and Guatemala border.

5. Friendly Locals

6. The Food

The food in Belize is a sumptuous fusion of Caribbean and Mexican cuisine. Vibrant flavours and fresh, local ingredients pretty much come as standard. Being on the coast, seafood also comes in abundance and couldn’t be fresher. This ‘pork pibil’ dish was my favourite meal from the whole trip, the slow cooked pork was melt-in-the-mouth and incredibly flavoured. I still dream of this meal today!

7. Scuba Diving and Snorkelling

The coastline and Islands of Belize is home to the largest barrier reef in the Western hemisphere, which is alive with marine life. The Blue Hole is the most famous dive site in Belize and is located on the Lighthouse Reef Atoll. Snorkelers can also get a slice of the underwater action, by taking a half or full day boat trip to go and discover some of the more shallow dive sites.

8. Adventure Activities

Travellers can mix laid-back beach days with adrenaline-filled adventure activities. The longest zip line in Belize is at the Bocawina Eco Resort, but we tried out the zip line at Calico Jack’s jungle resort, which also has 3 heart-racing zip line routes through the Belizean jungle. In terms of adventure activities, cave tours, river tubing and waterfall abseiling are all very popular.

9. Fly via the USA

10. A great launch pad into Central America

If you’re planning a longer, multi-stop adventure through Central America, Belize is the ideal starting point. The friendliness of the locals, English language and chilled-out culture will ease you in to your trip perfectly and gear you up for the more intrepid parts of Central America.

Whether you’re planning a beach holiday with a difference or you’re gearing up to a 6-month adventure of a lifetime, make sure the beautiful country of Belize is on your travel radar.

Here’s Why Belize Deserves To Be On Top Of Your Travel Bucket List

Uproxx authors

The reasons to visit Belize total far more than 10 and narrowing it down wasn’t easy. From afar, Belize’s appeal is all about the warm and clear blue waters of the Caribbean and the dense, wild jungles that draw you in. Once there, you start to pick up on more detail: the heart-pounding land and sea adventures, the blissful moments (like lounging on a deserted island or experiencing the rainforest come alive at dawn), the fascinating history of the ancient Mayan people, and the vibrant culture of the present day.

For those who need more convincing, here are 10 reasons you should move a trip to Belize way up on your travel bucket list.

1) Caye Caulker & 200 Other Tiny Cayes

Pretty much every computer screensaver you had in the ’90s

Belize Travel

But to enjoy an island paradise with just a little more infrastructure, head to Caye Caulker. At just five miles long and well under one mile wide, this small island is not much more than sand, windswept palm trees, a few narrow dirt streets and a handful of rustic hotels, bars and restaurants. Basically, it’s the visual definition of chill .

Plus, with its history as a backpackers’ paradise dating back to the 1970s, Caye Caulker isn’t short on rustic hostels, like Yuma’s House , and affordable hotels (see No. 6 on the list below).

Tip: The Lazy Lizard , an outdoor bar right on the water at the island’s end, might just be one of the coolest place you’ll ever have a drink.

2) The Water Is Perfect And Full of Adventure

Belize is home to the second largest barrier reef in the world

Belize Travel

Every year between between March and June, timed around each month’s full moon , gentle whale sharks make their migratory home in the waters off the coast of Belize. Time it right and you just might be able to snorkel or scuba dive with them ( Splash Dive Center can help you with that). Or year round, visit Shark Ray Alley, where you’ll be able to jump in the water with nurse sharks and sting rays.

Rather stay on the surface? Belize is one of the world’s premier fishing destinations — from fly fishing on the shallow flats to deep sea fishing for tuna, marlin and more beyond the reef.

Tip: If you don’t plan to spend a night on Caye Caulker, book SEAduced by Belize’s Day Sail and Snorkel trip . Via catamaran, you’ll snorkel twice (including a stop at Shark Ray Alley), then sail on to Caye Caulker for a few hours of island exploring.

3) Don’t Forget About The Jungles, They’re Incredible Too

Beaches AND jungles…it’s like two vacations in one

Belize Travel

Ian Anderson’s Caves Branch, an adventure outfitter and jungle lodge, also offers a massive array of jungle activities, like cave tubing , nighttime jungle walks , and an intensive three-night jungle survival course .

4) Actun Tunichil Muknal = Indiana Jones In Real Life

There really is a cave with a real crystal skull.

Belize Travel

Tip : No cameras whatsoever are allowed in the cave. Take a deep breath, yes, that means no photos for Instagram.

5) Vist Un-Crowded Mayan Temples

Behold Exhibit A: Xunantunich

Belize Travel

Located just a few thousand feet from Belize’s boarder with Guatemala, the easiest way to reach Xunantunich is to fly into San Ignacio, the country’s westernmost city and common entry point for anyone spending time in the jungle. From there, you’ll cross a river on a hand-cranked cable ferry and enter the ancient site whose origins date to approximately 1000 BC. Xunantunich’s main structure, the 130-foot-tall El Castillo, is estimated to have been built around 700 AD. From the top (yes you can climb it) you’ll have a 360-degree view for as far as the eye can see.

Tip: Schedule at least two days in the jungle as it’s not possible to visit Xunantunich and ATM cave in the same day.

6) The Hotels Are Dreamy (And Independent)

There are no big-brand mega hotels

Belize Travel

Located in the heart of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, consider Ramon’s Village or The Phoenix . Both will serve as a good home base for scuba divers and fisherman looking to be close to the reef and the action of town. Not far away on Caye Caulker, the Sea Dreams Hotel (pictured) is a small, family run property featuring a few rooms set around a courtyard and two bungalow-style rooms with hammocks on their font decks.

Down the coast in Placencia, the Maya Beach Hotel offers a small selection of hotel rooms and beachfront cottage suites. To splurge, a few minutes south, Itz’ana Resort & Residences is expected to bring a whole new level of luxury to Belize when it opens in early 2017.

In the jungle, Itz’ana’s sister property Ka’ana won’t disappoint — and neither will Chaa Creek , which has been serving ecotourists since 1981. While Chaa Creek offers higher end rooms, they also offer a collection of budget friendly Camp Casitas , which cost $65 per person per night.

Tip: Hollywood heavyweights have a thing for Belize. Francis Ford Coppola owns two boutique hotels in Belize: Blancaneaux (in the jungle) and Turtle Inn (on the beach). And Leonardo DiCaprio is turning his Belizean private island into an eco resort (scheduled to open some time in 2018).

7) Food, Food Food!

From street food to fine farm-to-table, t he culinary scene is legit

Belize Travel

Should your travels take you down Hummingbird Highway (a scenic drive that connects the country’s jungle interior to the central coast), don’t pass up a plateful of tamales from Bertha’s Tamales . This legendary roadside shack has been dishing out homemade tamales for over 60 years!

In Placencia (south/central coast), go for a splurge-worthy meal at Limilita , a pop-up test kitchen and truly memorable dining experience at Itz’ana (note: Limilita is temporary and will morph into the resort’s permanent restaurant, Limilia, when the property officially opens in early 2017). Also in Placencia, try Maya Beach Hotel’s Maya Bistro , a two-time winner of Belize’s “Restaurant of the Year” award.

Further north, in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, try El Fogon for authentic Belizean cuisine cooked over and open flame, or stop by The Truck Stop , a collection of shipping containers turned bar and food stalls.

8) It’s Super Easy To Get To

Aside from Mexico, Belize is the closest Central American country to the U.S.

Belize Travel

Once in Belize, a network of tiny airports throughout the country serviced by mini-airline Tropic Air , make it super easy to hop from location to location with speed and efficiency (for many, the time saved will likely outweigh the money spent).

9) English Is The First Language

Forget about communication barriers

Belize Travel

Fact : Belize has only been a country since 1981 (when it gained full independence from the United Kingdom).

10) It’s Zika-Free

It’s the only country in Central America with no active Zika virus transmissions

Belize remains the only country in Central America with no reported cases of active Zika virus transmissions according to the Centers for Disease Control . In other words, there have been no reported cases of Zika originating from within the country. For anyone looking for a tropical vacation who may also become pregnant in the near future, this is good news.

A Travel Guide To St. Kitts — The Caribbean Island You’re Missing Out On

Visiting Belize: Top Reasons to Visit!

Table of Contents

Belize is an untouched tropical paradise, belize has extra clean air, boundless exploration, one-of-a-kind natural formations, hearty belizean food, deep, diverse history of belize, turquoise belizean waters, diverse belizean flora & fauna, amorous belizean locals, if you are wondering what reasons are there for visiting belize then continue reading….

Now that we’ve helped you figure out where Belize is, we’re here to answer another question; Why you should come to Belize.

There are many “types” of travel that could be employed when coming to Belize, from Luxury style travel to budget backpacker style. regardless of your style of getting to, from, and around, there are a wealth of reasons for why you should come to Belize:

Waterfall-Bocawina-park-Belize

With a population density of about 15 people per square mile, the vast majority of Belize’s wilderness remains relatively undisturbed. Coupled in with the nature of the population, robust focus on environmental preservation by the country’s government has created expansive areas of pristine rainforest where rare and endangered animals live and thrive.

Many of the islands that bracket the outer shallows of the Belizean coastal zones also remain unexplored and uninhabited allowing for marine life to flourish and diversify with little or no threat to the species making their little lives there.

where-is-belize-chaa-creek-2016-5

With a lower population density comes a lower number of vehicles to be owned, and less traffic, even in our most densely populated of cities, of which the highest is little over 50,000 people smog is not a thing. The general populace of Belize is actually unaware of the existence of this phenomena, and those of us familiar, be it through travel or television, quickly forget that it happens in other countries.

The lofty breezes of Belize frequently bring the smell of not carbon emissions, but damp earth, fragrant trees, all manner of clean smells that can in some places only be found far away from civilization right to your bedroom window every morning.

Our national anthem starts with “Oh land of the free by the Carib sea” , there are few truer statements to describe our little green jewel. Belize gives you opportunities to explore a slice of its landscape and attraction type, from zip-lining through the canopies to diving deep in the Blue Hole and everything in-between.

Aside from the natural wonders, Belize boasts an astonishing number of Maya archaeological sites which you can choose to be guided through, or you can take the reins yourself and comb every corner for Mayan artefacts yourself.

When you’ve had enough of the relic exploration the towns of Belize are also ripe for discovery, with friendly locals always willing to help, and hidden gems of quaint splendour to be found in and around the streets and corners.

Belize-Barrier-Reef

Speaking of the natural formations, While Belize contains many age-old limestone cave formations, it’s the not hidden formations that are, by their nature, the most impressive.

The Great Blue Hole is a cenote of sorts, off-shore nestled within one of the atolls that crown our reef system. Scientists say that the Blue Hole wasn’t always blue because about 150,000 years ago it was above water before the sea levels rose. Speaking of sea levels, we for one are happy they did rise, and so are our little sea creature friends along the reef, due to the rise of the seas not going high enough it enabled the waters near Belize to stay shallow, warm and sunny which is perfect for, you guessed it: Coral Reefs.

The longest stretch of the Mesoamerican reef system meanders down along Belize’s coastline (190 miles) and is a highly respected natural conservation area (Belizeans are pretty passionate about our natural formations).

Top-Belize-Food-Tamale

All that adventure sounds enjoyably exhausting, and what do tired bodies need other than sleep? Food. Food is great, and Belizeans know how to make great food !

Of course having so much of the country be coast-line, a large part of our cuisine is centered around seafood and what is not centered around it can still include it. The Garinagu people make hearty soups out of fish called Sere (Seh-reh) and stews from ground foods and pigtail called Boil-up.

The Maya and Mestizo people make wonderful corn based, banana leaf wrapped hot pockets called Tamales, and just about everyone makes our famed Rice & Beans with stewed chicken/beef/pork and potato salad.

With so much more options than could be listed here, food is definitely one big reason for why you should come to Belize.

As you may have guessed from the quick mention of some of our cultures, Belize has a very diverse history.

Each ethnic group has their own personal story of why they left where they were, and why they came here and ultimately what made them stay. With such diversity comes an interesting timeline, especially for a little country like us. Many of the Mestizo fled here from a war in Mexico, bringing with them new customs and names, the Mennonites came to Belize in order to escape persecution and here found peace. The Garinagu came here looking for a home when they had none, and they found it. The Creole were born here, a result of British and African mingling, and the Maya had been here all along.

Each culture will happily tell you their story when asked, all a part of what came to make here such a great place, all grateful to be here, hopefully, you will be too.

Because of the Barrier reef, the inner waters and islands sit on shallow sea beds, trips to Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker take you jetting along clean teal tinted sea so clear you can look through to the sea-floor.

A  great many people visit the popular islands mentioned before and are dazzled by the white sands and relaxed surf, but Belize has so much more to offer; the letter known atolls are far less travelled and have beaches that stretch for hundreds of feet, dip, and resurface a short swim away on a connected island.

The Turneffe islands, Glovers reef atolls, and sapodilla Cayes are all remarkable examples of island systems which seemingly rise up from the sea as if by their own will.

Scarlett Macaws, big cats , baboons, Keel-billed toucans, manatees, just a short list of examples of the natural locals that choose to call Belize home along with the rest of us.

The expansive areas of unused land and the emphasis placed on keeping wildlife reserves, reserved, makes the sightings of wild creatures quite commonplace when traversing the highways and even the outskirts of towns here.

If ever your luck for chance encounters is not riding with you a short stop to The Best Little Zoo in the world will delight you with all the information and sightseeing you fancy, with most of their inhabitants being rescues you can also rest assured that no jungle creatures were harmed to populate The Zoo.

Everyone boasts about “friendly locals” in the towns the come from but being named one of the happiest countries in the world does help gratify that we really aren’t kidding, though we usually are.

Belize has a laid back, “go slow”, take it all in attitude to just about everything we do, which can be a hindrance to productivity but it sure makes for an easy going populace. Because Belize is comprised mainly of small towns, everyone retains that “we all know each other” vibe and its common place to have “good morning” choired at you with a smile as you walk down the street to pick up your breakfast.

Not only are the locals friendly, but they’re (we’re) always eager to lend a helping hand if you need one, be it for directions, advice, or anything else you can think of.

The 10 Best Reasons to Go to Belize (2024)

Belize palm trees and beach

(Updated Jan 2024)

Are you in search of a year round vacation destination that offers outdoor adventures, stunning natural beauty, and a rich cultural heritage? Look no further than Belize!

With its turquoise Caribbean water and lush jungles teeming with wildlife, there are numerous reasons to go to Belize. Whether you are eager to explore the depths of the Great Blue Hole or a history buff intrigued by ancient Mayan ruins, Belize is the perfect getaway to a tropical paradise.

I recently traveled to Belize with a large group and had the chance to experience the best things to do in Belize from the jungles of San Ignacio to the beaches of Ambergris Caye.  This Belize travel blog shares the top ten reasons why Belize is worth visiting. Keep reading to learn why you should go to Belize for your next vacation.

What is Belize known for?

Belize Location

Belize is a country in Central America that is nestled along the Caribbean Sea. It shares borders with Mexico and Guatemala, on the North American continent.

Top 10 Reasons to Go to Belize

1. ambergris caye atoll.

The beautiful atoll, Ambergris Caye, is one of the best reasons to visit Belize. Surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, this island is one of the main tourist attractions in Belize.

From world-class snorkeling and diving spots to luxurious resorts and charming beach bars, Ambergris Caye promises an unforgettable combination of natural beauty and warm hospitality. Whether you seek relaxation on sun-soaked shores or thrilling adventures beneath the waves, prepare to be enchanted by the enchanting allure of Ambergris Caye.

To get to the atoll from the airport in Belize City, take a twenty minute flight with breathtaking views, or an affordable 1.5 hour ferry ride. This Belize island may be small in size, but it is bursting with energy from lively oceanfront bars and restaurants.

Try visiting the Blue Bayou, which is a local spot where you can sip cocktails under palapas in the water. You can also grab a kayak, play volleyball, or enjoy a fresh-caught seafood lunch.

Another fun activity is watching “ The Chicken Drop ” at Wahoo’s Lounge. This is a hilarious game where the winner is determined by the space where the chicken poops. This is a lively and silly activity which is fun for all ages. Make sure to arrive early or you will miss out on the chance to play.

2. The Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Another main reason to visit Belize is to experience The Hol Chan Marine Reserve.   This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located within the Belize Barrier Reef. The Belize Barrier Reef is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef , which is the second largest barrier reef in the world.

This is the place to find warm, crystal blue water teaming with sea life. Visit Shark Ray Alley , a popular snorkeling spot in the reserve where you can swim alongside harmless nurse sharks and stingrays.  It is an exhilarating experience for adults and children alike. There you can also see turtles, colorful species of fish and MANATEES (if you are lucky)!

Remember to keep a safe distance from these protected mammals and consider using reef-safe sunscreen to protect the health of the sea life below.

3. The Great Blue Hole of Belize

This geological phenomenon, made famous by Jacques Cousteau, is a location on every Belize scuba diving bucket list. The Great Blue Hole is a sunken cave that measures approximately 400 feet deep. Visiting the Great Blue Hole was one of the main reasons why I wanted to visit Belize.

Getting out to the site for diving or snorkeling is a harrowing two hour boat trip through choppy waters, so it may not be for anyone prone to seasickness. Snorkelers may also enjoy this trip, but remember there is not a ton of marine life here. The Great Blue Hole Belize is sure to delight you with an underwater experience unlike anywhere on the planet.

4. Belize Island Hopping

Another reason to go to Belize is to island hop among the atolls. There are tours aplenty to visit neighboring atolls from Ambergris Caye .  Number one on the list is Caye Caulker . This small island is scattered with colorful restaurants and a multitude of “Instagram worthy” photo spots.

It’s easy to let the hours slip by while snorkeling in Caye Caulker , shopping, or enjoying the huge ocean diving board.  The Lazy Lizard is the place to grab a bite to eat and chill for the afternoon.

5. Visit Mayan Ruins

Although Belize is renowned for its glorious atolls, don’t forget to journey inland to visit the impressive ancient Mayan ruins .  Lamanai, Altun Ha, Xunantunich, Caracol , and Cahal Pech are just a few of the ancient sites which are accessible to tourists. Just across the border to Guatemala, you can see the towering structures of Tikal on a day trip from San Ignacio. The abundance and impressive archaeological sites in Belize are one of the main reasons you need to visit Belize.

6. ATM Cave of Belize

Actun Tunichil Muknal is difficult to pronounce, but it is a “must-see” experience when you visit Belize. The exhilarating journey through this massive cave filled with ancient artifacts, is akin to something out of an “Indiana Jones” movie. In all of my travels around the world, this is one of the most impressive and unforgettable excursions I have ever done!

This adventure tour begins with an easy 45 minute hike, followed by crossing two small streams to reach the cave entrance. Once inside the cave there are bats flying, sounds of dripping water, and a dampness in the air that contribute to the feeling of being on a National Geographic expedition.

Climbing through the tight crevasses and up the slippery rocks is a bit challenging. Once you reach the top, you enter The Grand Cathedral filled with scattered shards of pottery, stalagmites and stalactites. The stories of the human sacrifices and witnessing the final resting place of The Crystal Maiden , just might make your skin crawl a bit! Without question, exploring the ATM Cave is one of the top reasons to go to Belize.

7. Delicious & Unique Belizean Food

Next, you need to visit Belize for its amazing cuisine. Belize is surrounded by the sea which means the freshest and most flavorful seafood is easily accessible.  The lobster is so sweet, it literally melts in your mouth. We couldn’t get enough fresh ceviche, tortilla-like pupusas with cabbage and meat, conch fritters, and garnaches (which are similar to a tostada). Wash those down with an ice-cold Belikin or Land Shark Belize beer and you are good to go.  Delicious food is one of the main reasons why Belize is worth visiting!

Guava Limb Cafe in San Ignacio and Elvi’s Kitchen in Ambergris Caye were two of our favorite places to eat in Ambergris Caye. Trust me- this is a foodie paradise!

Seeking Stamps Tip: Marie Sharp’s habanero sauce is also a Belizean “must try”condiment (and it makes an excellent souvenir).

8. Warm, Friendly Belize Locals

Another reason to go to Belize is the local people. Unquestionably, the Belizean people are so welcoming, warm, kind and helpful. Passengers arriving in Belize City, are greeted with wide grins. Feeling welcomed in a foreign place always helps make a vacation enjoyable.

9. Thrilling Belize Jungle Activities

There are a multitude of exciting jungle activities to try in the inland cities of Belize. Exploring caves, inner tubing, canoes, zip lining and swimming in waterfalls are all thrilling options. Rio Frio Cave is a massive cave that you can explore. It’s a convenient rest stop on the return home from Caracol. Nearby, The Rio On Pools is a nice place to cool off  in the flowing water.

If you have the chance, visit The Iguana Project , at the San Ignacio Resort. You can learn about Iguana conservation and feed these gentle creatures. Kids will have a great time holding the reptiles.

10. Why Go to Belize: It’s Easy to Travel There

One of the best reasons to travel to Belize is how convenient it is for American tourists. English is the predominant language and U.S. dollars are widely accepted.

Additionally, Belize is a surprisingly straightforward country to navigate. It’s easily accessible due to frequent flights from the U.S., including some that are direct. Once you arrive, travel on the islands is simple. Just grab a golf cart and it’s difficult to get lost.

There are amazing resorts in Belize . Whether you want affordable accommodations, eco-friendly lodges, or luxurious resorts, Belize has them all.

A vacation to Belize has something for everyone!  It’s a great location for family vacations, couples, or solo female travelers.

Reasons to Visit Belize at Least Once

There are unbelievable opportunities for wildlife viewings in Belize

From jungles teeming with howler monkeys and jaguars, to the 240 miles of crystalline Caribbean Sea coastline with over 400 islands (called cayes), Belize is small but beautiful. There’s a huge variety of landscape and culture – plus the country is home to Caracol, some of the best-preserved Mayan ruins. Whether you choose to roam the caves, jungle and mountains inland or head to the cayes for some island living, here’s why you should visit Belize at least once in your lifetime.

1. transport is easy.

Natural Feature, Architectural Landmark

Shuttle boats transport tourists from a cruise ship to the port dock. Belize City, Belize

Getting around in Belize is easy, whether by car, boat, bus or plane – not least because English is the official language. There are two small airlines – Tropic Airways and Maya Island Air – that run shuttle flights between hubs like Belize City, San Pedro and Placencia, and there are multiple ferry routes between the mainland and the cayes too. If traveling by land, a bus network spans the whole country, and you’ll get to ride down the beautifully scenic Hummingbird Highway that connects central Belize to the southeastern coast, via citrus groves, rushing rivers and the Maya Mountains.

2. Its ethnic and cultural diversity

Hopkins Village, Belize - July 03, 2016: Garifuna troupe performs traditional songs with drumming and dancing in Hopkins Village

Belize is rich in cultural diversity, and its population is a vibrant medley of ethnic groups. From the Maya to the Mestizo, Garifuna, Creole and the Mennonite communities who came to Belize in the late 1950s, this melting pot creates a unique and beautiful cultural landscape. Many Belizeans are multilingual and might also speak Creole, Spanish and Mayan dialects depending on their heritage. Learn more by visiting the Museum of Belize in Belize City. If you can, definitely try to catch a live performance of Garifuna drumming, or even take a lesson at Warasa Garifuna Drum School in Punta Gorda.

3. Lobster is on the menu

Restaurant, Central American

The food in Belize is as bright and varied as its culture, with influences from Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean colliding with traditional Mayan cuisine. Eat fry jacks for breakfast: deep-fried pieces of dough served with refried beans and whichever tropical fruit is local, ripe and ready. Try stewed chicken or tamales (corn-based dough mixed with meats, or beans and cheese) for lunch from street sellers, or go on a fishing trip and catch some red snapper or barracuda. If you visit between June and February, Caribbean spiny lobster is in season and on menus everywhere. Fresh off the grill and served with a side of plantain chips, it’s to-die-for with some local Marie Sharp’s hot sauce and a frosty bottle of Belikin beer.

5. It has the most caves in Central America

Natural Feature

Rio Frio Cave

With the highest concentration of caves in Central America, Belize has a cave experience to suit everyone. The Rio Frio cave in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve has a yawning 65ft (20m) entrance and is small enough that you’ll never lose daylight, whilst the sprawling Actun Tunichil Muknal (or ATM) cave delivers a more thrilling adventure. You’ll venture underground and have to swim, scramble and wade through water for parts of the journey, but it’s well worth it. The ancient Maya believed caves to be portals to the underworld, and you’ll find relics from rituals and even skeletons that have become fused into the rocks over thousands of years.

6. The wildlife is incredible

Central America, Belize, Belize City, Belize Zoo. Jaguar

Belize has an abundance of wildlife, all fiercely protected under the Wildlife Protection Act. Bird watchers have the opportunity to observe nearly 600 species, including the keel-billed toucan (the national bird of Belize) and the red-footed booby. Underwater, you’ll find the Belize Barrier Reef and the highest-known density of Antillean manatees anywhere in the world. Five species of big cat, including the jaguar, puma and ocelot, roam the jungle along with tapirs, rare frogs and crocodiles. Belize Zoo near Belize City is a fully accessible destination to view all 45 species that are native to the country.

7. You’ll see some of the best-preserved Mayan ruins

Archaeological site

Plaza B temple, Mayan ruins, Caracol, Belize, Central America

Widely thought to have been the center of Mayan civilization – with over 600 Mayan sites and counting – Belize has a lot to explore when it comes to ancient history. Caracol is the largest archaeological site, spanning an area greater than Belize City and containing a caana (sky-palace) pyramid that is the highest man-made structure in the country. Wander among the ball courts, astronomic observatory, altars and reservoirs and admire the views of Chiquibul National Park from atop the pyramids. It’s well worth employing a guide who can offer extra insight into this ancient culture and enrich your experience.

8. It’s surrounded by hundreds of islands

Beautiful caribbean sight with turquoise water in Caye Caulker island, Belize.

Out of the hundreds of cayes (islands) in Belize, many are tiny, uninhabited dots of white sand, whilst others – like the much larger Ambergris Caye – are bustling hubs with hotels, bars and restaurants. Slower-paced Caye Caulker has a relaxed backpacker vibe and excellent snorkeling – plus the entire island is car-free, leaving you free to amble and enjoy island life. For a swashbuckling day out, head to King Lewey Island near Placencia. The entire island is a pirate-themed bar-resort, with a few private cabanas for visitors who overindulge on local rum or want to keep the party going.

9. You can hike in the jungle

Forest, Park

CAYO DISTRICT BELIZE Thousand Foot Falls in the lush Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

Almost half of mainland Belize is covered in rainforest, and the best way to connect with the natural landscape is on a hike through this unspoilt wilderness. In addition to caves, the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve contains wonders like the Thousand Foot Falls, a narrow waterfall that tumbles between the trees into a misty plunge pool, where you can take a refreshing dip to cool off. Nearer to the coast, a tour of Monkey River in the Toledo district takes you upstream and then for a walk into the jungle where you can hear the – alarmingly loud – howler monkeys screaming above you. Bring DEET-strength insect repellent.

10. You might spot a wild jaguar

Natural Feature, Park, Zoo

BELIZE, Hopkins, the road into Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

A jaguar sighting in the wild is at the top of many a bucket list for travelers to Belize, and as one of the country’s largest protected areas, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is the place to try and spot one. Home to an estimated 80 jaguars plus hundreds of other flora and fauna species, there is plenty to see besides the shy big cats – which you do have to be lucky to see. Come alone or in a small group and come early, as nothing frightens wildlife away more than noisy hikers and the hot midday sun. Afterwards, hike the Tiger Fern Trail and enjoy views across the Maya Mountains.

16 things to know before traveling to Belize

reasons to travel to belize

Travel to Belize with ease using these tips © Joe Tabacca / Shutterstock

It may be the second-smallest country in Central America but Belize delivers across the board .

Eco-adventures by the score, cultural heritage as diverse as the landscape, Maya temples that tower over modern human-made structures, hundreds of islands with talcum-white sands, the world’s second-largest barrier reef – you get the idea.

On the mainland, overgrown rainforests reveal hiking trails to double waterfalls. Complex cave systems run underground, while winding rivers are best enjoyed by inner tube. Then there’s the food: aromatic, franchise-free bites can be found on every other street corner, as is the inviting Belizean spirit.

But where to start? Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Belize before you even set off.

A diver swims through clear, blue waters in Belize

1. You’ll need at least seven days in Belize

Belize can feel like both the Caribbean and Central America all at once – and you can experience it all in a single vacation, as it’s easy to cross the entire country in a one-day road trip . Still, it’s better to do things the Belizean way: unhurried.

Aim to spend at least a week here. Split your itinerary between Northern, Central and Southern Belize , and plan to stay at least three nights in each area. This will allow you enough time to enjoy your accommodation, visit the top-rated sights and recover in between.

2. You probably won’t need a visa

A select few countries do, however. Verify whether you need an entry visa to Belize on the Immigration Department’s website . But note that all visitors — even visa-free entrants — will need to apply for an extension to stay in the country for more than 30 days, depending on your citizenship.

Drone photo of a valley along the Hummingbird Highway in Belize with a cloudy sky.

3. Drive during the day

With rental cars costing as little as US$50 per day, it’s a doddle navigating the five major highways of Belize.

However, they’re dimly lit and the single-lane roads are often lined with “sleeping policemen,” a colloquial nickname for speed bumps. They’re often unpainted too, so it’s best to stick to driving in the daylight hours.

4. Watch out for wildlife on the roads

Green signs are directional, while yellow signs warn that wildlife could be crossing. Look out for tapir on the John Smith Airport Link Rd and coatimundis on the scenic Hummingbird Highway.

Streetside barbecues on Caye Caulker where you can enjoy grilled chicken, lobster (in season), shrimp kebabs an other BBQ treats cooked on the spot

5. Try the street food

Scooped from deep pots of fragrant stews, coconut milk-infused rice and beans are often served with caramelized fried plantain. A quasi-religious meal, everything is homemade and some may take offense if you don’t attempt to finish your plate.

Street food is relatively cheap here . Don't miss the gravy-filled meat pies that fog clear-plastic containers balancing on the bicycle handlebars of mobile vendors, or the “johnny cakes,” coconut-based baked biscuits sliced and stuffed for long journeys.

Other staples include masa (a dough of ground corn) that is transformed into deep-fried favorites like panades (crispy crescents of beans, cheese, or hashed fish) and salbutes (open-faced rounds piled with shredded chicken and cabbage).

Late-night grub is often meat-heavy street tacos, pupusas (a cornmeal cake stuffed with beans, cheese and fried pork), burritos, or a not-so-humble hotdog with bacon and caramelized onions. Any griddle on wheels will fill your stomach for BZ$10.

6. It’s OK to drink tap water in Belize but filtered water is the norm

While it’s OK to drink tap water in Belize, filtered water is the norm. It usually comes in small bottles or from a five-gallon water dispenser.

Since Belize’s single-use plastic ban took effect in April 2019 (albeit excluding disposable water bottles), carrying a reusable water bottle is applauded. Hotels and resorts will often have large dispensers available near the front desk and most restaurants will refill your bottle for free.

7. Time feels more like a suggestion in Belize

Belize offers a very slow, laid-back pace of life. That goes for everything from government offices (including immigration) to public transportation. Be flexible with your plans and be patient, even on the mainland.

Public transportation overland and on water is less than a third of the cost of domestic airlines such as  Maya Island Air and Tropic Air  but, unsurprisingly, it will take you much longer to go the scenic route. Both the water taxis and bus routes are unlikely to leave on time, so account for 15 minutes of wiggle room.

To avoid stopping for every roadside hitchhiker along the way when using the bus system , always choose the “Express” option if your final destination is advertised on the windshield.

8. Be polite if you want to impress the locals

Locals will greet one another and reciprocity is expected. Bidding a general “good morning” as you enter a room goes a long way, and a simple nod of acknowledgment is returned with a smile. Belizeans like to chat, so expect to make small talk while waiting in a queue.

9. Petty crime is your main safety concern in Belize

Like any destination, it’s best not to make yourself a target for crimes of opportunity. Avoid isolated areas, don’t be flashy with money or jewelry, and don’t take public transport alone at night.

Taxis are pricier but safer and easily recognizable with green license plates. Hotels will also usually have their own list of trusted drivers.

In tourist zones, some vendors may be persistent, but a polite “no, thank you” should do the trick. Crime in Belize is largely drug- or gang-related, more notably in select pockets of Belize City.

Unless actively seeking them out, the average traveler naturally bypasses infamous hotspots entirely by sticking to designated tourism zones. Beyond signage, Tourism Police are omnipresent on foot, bicycle and ground patrols, but there’s still no better indicator of safety than your own gut.

Guide Jose Magaña, a practicing Maya healer who’s well-versed in the native flora of Elijio Panti National Park, teaching Alex Schechter.

10. Don’t forget to tip

Tourism has helped to instill a tipping culture in Belize, but it’s not an outright requirement. Some restaurants auto-charge up to a 20% sit-down service charge, so double-check receipts before (unnecessarily) adding more.

A gratuity is expected in cash for servers, appreciated for tours and goes a long way for housekeeping, but it’s totally discretionary based on the service you experience. You can skip tipping elsewhere but taxis sometimes round up a fare as Belize has no fixed tariffs.

If you’ve received great service, you can match the 12.5% General Sales Tax on the receipt. For an exceptional tour, a 20% tip is recommended.

11. Pack some US dollars

You won’t need to carry loads of cash, as there are plenty of point-of-sale machines and ATMs in the more popular destinations.

US dollars are accepted across the country at a rate of two-to-one, though try to carry US$10 and US$20 notes as they are easier to make change. You’ll likely get smaller bills in Belize dollars back.

12. Don’t fear the rainy season

Belize’s rainy season (June to November) coincides with the Atlantic hurricane season. This means cheaper hotel rates, lower room occupancy, and better deals.

Major attractions – like Maya sites, archaeological reserves, hiking trails and waterfalls – will all stay open during this period unless nature decides otherwise. All in all, it can be a good time to visit.

Flooding risks tend to subside within 48 hours and the high winds are more of a risk to your driving than the downpours. Some hotels and restaurants will close during their slowest months, such as October, so check ahead.

13. Buy travel insurance

This is always recommended but especially so if you decide to visit during the rainy season. Buy travel insurance to protect your trip should a hurricane cut it short.

14. Belize has decriminalized weed, but that does not mean it’s legal

In November 2017, Belize amended its Misuse of Drugs Act to decriminalize marijuana use on private property for adults in possession of up to 10g.

However, be warned: selling, growing, or smoking weed on public property remains a federal offense. Despite the impression given by some, it’s best not to buy or sell marijuana.

15. The LGBTIQ+ community is generally accepted

Although homosexuality wasn’t formally legalized in Belize until 2016, it was the first former British colony in the Caribbean to overturn its anti-sodomy laws. Still, public displays of affection between same-sex couples may solicit stares here. The main tourism zones, such as Ambergris Caye , are the most gay friendly.

16. Solo women travelers are welcomed

No stranger to solo travelers or backpackers on a budget, Belize is also fairly safe for women traveling alone. Harassment will often come in the form of cat-calling, but nuisances tend to back off once if you stand your ground or ignore them outright. “No” is largely respected here, but sometimes you may have to say it loudly.

Hottie alert: Belize is one of the top travel destinations for 2023. After visiting in March, we became convinced that this country’s popularity is only going to continue to take off. Below, we share the top 10 reasons to visit Belize in 2023, explaining exactly why we think this destination is the total package.

With crystal blue waters, near perfect weather, and incredible biodiversity, Belize is a destination worth keeping your eye on. In fact, you might want to plan your trip before this off-the-beaten-path country becomes even more of a hot commodity!

1. belize is a short flight from the u.s..

If you’re playing the field (meaning you only have 3-7 days to explore a new place) you need a destination that doesn’t require a full travel day just to reach. Belize is just a 2 hour flight from Florida, making it an easy connection from many places in the U.S. You shouldn’t have to spend too much of your precious time off on a plane.

Plus, flights to Belize can be affordable if you book in advance. We like to compare flights on Google Flights or Wayaway . Wayaway is a flight booking platform that gives travelers the best rates on airline tickets and other travel deals. Users who sign up for the WayAway Plus membership plan get additional cashback on bookings of flights, hotels, rentals, and more. 2. Belize is small & easy to navigate

Belize is approximately the same size as Massachusetts, making it a pretty small country compared to its neighbors, Mexico and Guatemala. Once you fly into Belize City, you can take hopper flights or, in some cases, just a short car ride to reach your vacation destination.

What’s more, Belize offers a reliable transportation system that allows visitors to easily access popular destinations such as Placencia, the Cayes (islands), and the jungle in San Ignacio.

  • By plane: $150 roundtrip (15 minutes)
  • By bus: $30 roundtrip (4.5 hours)
  • By shared shuttle : $60 per person

The Cayes (Ambergris & Caye Caulker)

  • By plane: $175 roundtrip (10-15 minutes)
  • By water taxi: $59 roundtrip (60-90 minute ride), plus the price of the taxi from airport to water taxi ($30 USD)

San Ignacio – Jungle

  • Shared Shuttle: $20 per person, 1 way (2 hours)
  • Private Shuttle: $200 for up to 4 people (2 hours)

3. Visit Belize to explore the ocean AND jungle

For those who just can’t choose, Belize has it all. From pristine beaches and vibrant coral reefs to dense jungles teeming with wildlife and ancient ruins, this country showcases eye-catching and diverse landscapes.

Start your trip by traveling to San Ignacio where you can trek through jungles, discover hidden waterfalls, and encounter exotic wildlife. Then after a few days, book this bus ride that will take you right to the water taxi port for Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. On these islands, you can spend a few days snorkeling alongside colorful marine life and relaxing on white sandy beaches.

Ultimately, Belize’s unique combination of natural landscapes makes it the total package for adventurous and outdoorsy travelers.

4. Visit Belize to snorkel the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world

The main reason we traveled to Belize was to see the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world. For this reason, we chose to stay on Ambergris Caye, an island where the reef is just offshore.

When you visit Belize, you get the chance to explore the vibrant underwater ecosystem, swim alongside colorful marine creatures, and discover breathtaking coral formations. During our stay, we saw nurse sharks, spotted eagle rays, sea turtles, and countless different fish on this tour that we booked .

The Great Blue Hole, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also located in Belize and a must-visit for divers looking to witness this natural wonder firsthand.

@baggagegirls Let’s BREAK UP with toxic travel together 💔 We’re excited to start this series on sustainable travel tips! Our blog is all about the idea that lots of small changes add up to have a BIG impact on our 🌎. So here are 5 tips you can follow to help protect the Belize Barrier Reef as you travel to Belize! P.S. 5. Belize accepts U.S. currency

Belize really impressed us with how easy it is for U.S. citizens to travel here. For example, Belize accepts U.S. currency, so you can bring and use U.S. dollars throughout your trip. What’s more, the exchange rate is 1 USD to 2 BZD. Prices on menus and grocery store items in Belize are often written in BZD, but it’s quite easy to convert to USD in your head – just half the price of the item!

6. Belize is a dream vacation destination

Around here, we believe there’s a big difference between traveling and vacationing . To us, traveling is about falling in love with a new place, really getting to know it. When we travel, we’re exploring new cultures, expanding our knowledge, seeking personal growth, the list goes on.

But when we vacation, we want a break from our busy routines to relax and unwind. Of course, the best trips probably include a little bit of both. But we’re here to say that Belize is a dream vacation destination if you want to get away.

Ambergris Caye is a particularly good spot to vacation in Belize. This island has stunning resorts and hotels that are perfect for families, honeymooners, or groups of friends planning a spring break. The primary mode of transportation on this island is a golf cart. On Ambergris Caye, you’ll find the laid back island vibe that will make you instantly feel as if you’re a world away.

7. Belize is great for young travelers AND families

There are many destinations that we recommend for young travelers. There are also many destinations that we recommend for families with young kids. But rarely is there one destination so great for both groups of people as Belize is!

The island of Caye Caulker is a perfect match for young travelers, as its full of BnBs and hostels. Caye Caulker is also known for its party scene, and it offers popular beach bars like the Split where you can sip drinks and swim in crystal clear water.

The island of Ambergris Caye is a perfect match for families, as it offers everything from affordable to luxury resorts, and a variety of activities kids will enjoy. Plus, we saw many families take kids along on snorkel tours . Our 9 year old brother came along on one of ours and loved every minute of getting to swim with the marine life and explore the reef.

8. U.S. citizens are settling down in Belize

The English-speaking population and the ease of travel from the United States has got people thinking…about settling down in Belize. People are interested in developing a more lasting relationship with this country. An increasing number of Americans are purchasing property in Belize.

Why are U.S. citizens purchasing property in Belize? Here are a few reasons:

  • Foreigners can buy property outright in Belize, unlike many other countries
  • The real estate is cheaper than average here (at the moment)
  • Belize is an eye-catching retirement destination
  • Belize offers incentive programs to help tourists become residents

9. Tourism is Belize’s Largest Industry

Your visit to Belize will positively impact the economy. Just make sure to minimize your negative impact on the environment. Tourism is the biggest contributor to Belize’s economy, and it’s on the rise again after the drop it took during Covid-19.

When you visit Belize, make sure to prioritize supporting the local economy by shopping at local businesses, eating at locally-owned restaurants, and purchasing foods and goods from local vendors. At Baggage, we are all about sustainable tourism – meaning that we aim to travel in a way that positively impacts the people we encounter, the local economies of the places we visit, and the environment. That’s why we do our very best to share local accommodations and tourism offerings whenever possible. We’re breaking up with toxic travel in favor of sustainable travel tips on this blog – and you should join us!

10. Belize is focused on Sustainable Tourism in 2023

Now more than ever, Belize is working hard to protect its natural resources that make this country such a desirable destination for tourism.

One recent example is the Fish Right, Eat Right program, which was implemented by the Belize Fisheries Department (BFD) and Belize Tourism Board (BTB). This program promotes the responsible sourcing of seafood and educates tourists and consumers to make the right choices about the food they’re eating. We expect to see ecotourism offerings in this country continue to emerge, from eco resorts to eco tours and we’re excited to travel back to Belize to highlight ecotourism more in future years.

Wrap it up: Visit Belize

As you can see, Belize is uniquely poised to become the next big travel destination in 2023. From the second-largest barrier reef in the world to its lush rainforests and ancient Maya ruins, Belize offers experiences that cater to many types of travelers. The ease of navigation, accessibility, and the country’s commitment to sustainable tourism make Belize a hot commodity.

There is no better time than now for a little love affair with Belize. You pack your bags, and we’ll plan your trip. Below, you’ll find all our Belize travel guides to help you decide which island to stay on, which resort is your perfect match, and what to do during your vacation in Belize!

10 Reasons To Visit Belize During Your Vacation

Visit Belize, a beautiful country with a unique history and amazingly diverse culture, hidden in a small corner of Latin America.

Keep reading to discover why you should visit Belize, the best places to visit, and the things to do that you simply can’t miss.

Reasons To Visit Belize

Belize is an amazingly beautiful country located to the south of Mexico and the east of Guatemala. It’s the only non-Latin country in Central America and one with an impressively diverse culture and rich history.

But, why should you visit Belize? Well, for many reasons! Among the main ones I can mention: it’s a spectacular diving and snorkeling paradise, it boasts a series of gorgeous little islands and cays with stunning beaches, it’s home to numerous Mayan archaeological sites, and offers the most unique gastronomic experiences in the Americas.

Have I caught your attention yet?

Best Places To Visit Belize

When visiting Belize there are a few places that you can’t miss.

Here are the top 5 places to visit in Belize:

1. Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is the largest of Belize’s hundreds of islands and the most popular one too. This is the perfect spot for a relaxing tropical vacation.

The white-sand beaches are amazing and the whole atmosphere is quite laid back. Move around the island in golf carts and try not to miss the famous Costa Maya Festival taking place here during the summer.

2. Belize Barrier Reef System

Even if you aren’t a diving enthusiast you have to visit the Belize Barrier Reef System. This reef is a 190 miles (300 km) section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which is the second-largest in the world just after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

It’s just one of those natural wonders that you have to see with your own eyes. The biodiversity of those waters is so impressive that the Reef System includes 7 marine reserves, 450 cays, and 3 atolls .

3. Placencia

When you visit Belize, you can’t miss Placencia , a quaint little village located in a gorgeous peninsula in southern Belize, and it’s home to the best beaches in the country.

Placencia is a secluded piece of paradise on Earth, away from the big resorts of other destinations, but ideal to disconnect from real life for a couple of weeks.

4. Half Moon Caye

This small caye is a historical national park and protected area , which means that its waters are filled with abundant marine life and its beaches are among the best in the country.

If you enjoy diving or snorkeling, this is a place you have to visit.

5. Belize City

Contrary to what you may think, Belize City is not the actual capital of this Central American country, although it was in the past.

These days, Belmopan is home to all of the government buildings and infrastructure. However, Belize City is the place to go if you want to get to know more about Belize’s rich history and fascinating culture.

Walk around its picturesque streets and the famous Swing Bridge that links the north and south sides of the city, and visit the Museum of Belize.

Things To Do in Belize

If you’re planning to visit Belize soon, these are my favorite 5 things to do in Belize:

1. Dive in the Blue Hole

This spectacular spot located near the center of Lighthouse Reef is the largest underwater sinkhole in the world .

With a length of over 984 ft (300 m) across and a depth of 410 ft (125 m), the Great Blue Hole is the most famous diving spot in Belize and one of the most sought-after scuba diving destinations in the world.

2. Hol Chan Marine Reserve

This marine reserve is quite close to Ambergris Caye and covers around 13,362 acres of marine waters distributed into four zones:

  • 640 acres of coral reefs: Zone A
  • 5,376 acres of seagrass beds: Zone B
  • 6,336 acres of mangroves: Zone C
  • 1,280 acres of shark ray alley: Zone D

You can swim, practice snorkel and scuba diving here, and marvel yourself with the more than 160 species of fish in the area, 3 species of sea turtle, as well as 2 types of dolphins and the West Indian manatee.

3. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary & Jaguar Preserve

If you want to move away from the sea and explore the jungle side of Belize, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary & Jaguar Preserve is the perfect place for you.

This is the only jaguar preserve in the world and besides that magnificent cat, you’ll see plenty of parrots, howler monkeys, toucans, and many more species of animals.

4. Visit Mayan Archaeological Sites

There are many of them throughout the country, but El Caracol is the most famous one. The ancient city dates from the Classic Period (200-900 A.D.) and is the largest archaeological zone in Belize.

5. Belize Zoo

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center is located around 29 miles (47 km) west of Belize City and is home to over 200 Belize-native animals of 45 different species.

The zoo is fully accessible for visitors with physical disabilities and offers different packages and activities.

What Is the Best Time To Visit Belize?

Definitely the winter season, as during the summer it can get a little bit too hot and humid. However, from November to February, the weather is still warm but with a refreshing cooling breeze in the afternoon, and the beaches are at their best.

Visit Belize in December and you’ll get to enjoy some interesting Belizean Christmas traditions.

Is It Safe To Visit Belize?

Belize is a very safe place for tourists. It’s quite rare to hear about a tourist suffering a robbery or any other kind of crime. However, as in most places, it’s important to keep yourself to the tourist areas and avoid being alone by night in non-touristy neighborhoods.

Visit Belize and Practice Your Spanish

Without the big names of other travel destinations, Belize is a hidden gem in the middle of the Caribbean. Its pristine beaches and other spectacular natural wonders are among the best-kept secrets in Latin America.

Although Spanish isn’t Belize’s official language, you’ll find out soon that many people in the country speak Spanish. Visit Belize and practice your Spanish with the locals to make the most of your trip.
