Final Thoughts: Best Men’s Travel Hats

Best overall performance snapback melin trenches icon hydro.

Black and grey men's baseball cap

Material : Varies by model Pros : Waterproof, stylish, floatable, breathable Cons : A little pricey for a ball cap Best for : Active lifestyles

I’m usually a baseball hat guy when I travel, and melin makes some of the sturdiest and most customizable lids around. The Trenches Icon Hydro is perfect for men who lead an active lifestyle. If you’re searching for a hat that’s equally at home on a sunny beach, coast to coast road trip , or an urban cafe, this is the one.

Melin makes this hat in a load of configurations, styles, and sizes, each made from lightweight, breathable material that floats on water and has a hidden image that’s only visible when wet. It also has a crushable front panel which makes it perfect for people on the go.

Minimalist Do-Everything Cap Western Rise Versa

Western Rise Versa baseball hat

Material : Polyester, spandex, EVA foam bill Pros : Versatile, crushable, lifetime warranty Cons : May not fit larger heads Best for : Small-to-Medium heads wanting a does-it-all hat

The Western Rise Versa is a no-nonsense, minimalist baseball cap with no logos, designs, or distractions. This allows you to wear it with any outfit you please and make fussing over fashion old news.

Its modest looks are only half the story: The four-way stretch material is breathable, waterproof, and wicks moisture away. Its versatile design means you can jam it into your bag and use it anywhere from the gym to crowded city streets.

Dad Hat With Airplane Logo NxTSTOP Liftoff

NxTSTOP Liftoff

Material : Polyester, Spandex Pros : Curved bill, great for medium-to-large heads Cons : Some may find it a little dorky Best for : Dads, travel addicts

Here’s a ‘cool’ hat on Amazon with a classic dad hat design with a curved bill that’s clearly  made for travel. I like the ballcap design and may snag one of these bad boys for my upcoming trip to San Francisco.

In particular, I like the lightweight and breathable mesh and the front airplane logo so I can let others know exactly where my priorities lie. The NxTSTOP liftoff is the only hat on this list that’s not marketed as “crushable,” but it’s still travel friendly as can be.

Crushable & Ventilated Sun Cap Coolibar Kaden

Coolibar Kaden sun cap

Material : Cotton, polyester Pros : Easy to pack; ample sun protection Cons : Even with ventilation, it can run warm Best for : Long days in the sun – hiking, biking, beaching

I found two scabby ‘sunspots’ (keratosis) on my face the other day, so I’m taking sun protection seriously here in my mid-thirties. When I visit super-sunny South Africa this summer, I’ll be wearing a hat like this!

I like that this good-looking safari sun hat has a ‘stampede string’ like my favorite cowboy hat, plus it’s crushable, breathable, and extremely well-reviewed. Protect that precious skin, fellas.

UPF 50+ Straw Sun Hat Sunday Afternoons Havana

Sunday Afternoons Straw Havana

Material : 90% Paper, 10% Polyester Pros : Inexpensive, stylish, packable Cons : I honestly don’t see any cons here Best for : Protecting your head from the sun

Release your inner Hunter S. Thompson and embark on your very own Rum Diaries  adventure. This Sunday Afternoons faux-straw hat is perfect for blocking the sun as you slyly gallivant around the Caribbean looking for trouble.

It’s a classic travel hat — affordable, stylish, and packable — and a favorite of both men and women. So, like a good sweater, keep your eye on it or your lady friend may run away with it while you’re sleeping one off.

Indiana Jones Style Outback Fedora Dorfman Pacific

Brown Dorfman Pacific Outback Fedora

Material : 100% wool Pros : Waterproof, crushable, mysterious Cons : A little stuffy in hot weather Best for : Looking dashing as you swing from vine to vine

Just a heads up, you’ll need to be a particular type of traveler to do justice to this hat. So ask yourself — am I the kind of guy who can steal cursed artifacts, run a gauntlet of booby traps, fend off snakes, and still somehow manage to escape with his life? If so, proceed.

If you’re not already Indiana Jones, don’t expect this hat to make you his dead ringer. But you can count on it to reliably protect your melon from sun and rain while conferring a certain panache. Take that, René Belloq !

Wear Anywhere Cowboy Hat Overland Teton

Overland Teton wool cowboy headwear

Material : 100% wool Pros : Easy to pack, waterproof, classic style Cons : City slickers need not apply Best for : Country music stars and their fans

Here’s our favorite cowboy-style travel hat on the market. It’s easy to figure out why: The wide brim casts a lot of shade, and like others on this list, you can jam it into your pack and have it bounce back into shape when you get to your destination.

It’s 100% wool, so it will repel the occasional monsoon and dry quickly. Teton makes this hat in three different colors and five different sizes. And it saves time, too — you won’t ever need to pull out your passport to prove you’re an American.

Crushable Wool & Felt Fedora Scala Classico

Black Scala Classico wool and felt fedora

Material : 100% Wool Pros : Attitude, weather-proof, travel-friendly Cons : You have to be worthy of it Best for : Cool and confident dudes with a sense of style

This ain’t your grandpappy’s fedora, gents. The Sala Classico is a century-old style that will make you look hot off the press. And durable? Try crushing it, rolling it, and jamming it into your pack — it’s up for anything.

With a bit of Bogart attitude and a soft-spoken tip of the brim, you’ll have the ladies ready to swoon. Scoop them up before they hit the floor revive them gently with a scotch. That’s ageless gallantry, and this is the travel hat for you, comrade.

Made-in-Ireland Flat Cap Biddy Murphy

Biddy Murphy Irish-style flat cap

Material : 100% wool Pros : Compact, unique, and oh-so continental Cons : Would be fightin’ words to diss this Irish classic Best for : Bald fellas like me

Guess what? With a last name like mine (Riley), I’m duty-bound to love the timeless Irish styling of this cap. Next time I tour my ancestral island, I’ll definitely be sporting one of these puppies and doing my best to blend in.

The Biddy Murphy is an Irish newsboy hat made in County Kerry, Ireland. This 100% wool cap is naturally weather-resistant and sheds rain, sleet, and snow. So pop it into your travel bag and get ready to down a Guinness (or several).

Stylin’ Washed Bucket Lid adidas Originals

adidas Originals bucket lid

Material : Cotton Pros : Keeps the sun off your neck Cons : Looks kinda ’90s, cotton doesn’t shed water Best for : Looking cool while turning back the clock

My big head doesn’t look good in most bucket hats, but Adidas has me pondering long and hard over their dazzling assortment of colors and patterns. I might just toss one of these into my pack the next time I’m traveling in Eastern Europe or Asia.

The Adidas Originals bucket hat is versatile and relaxed and goes with any travel attire. It’s also the most affordable hat on this list, so if you’re traveling on a budget, this might save you a few quid.

Beanie for Cold Weather American Giant Shop

American Giant Shop cold-weather beanie

Material : 100% acrylic Pros : Simple, warm, made in the USA Cons : Colors are a bit bland, not waterproof Best for : Cold ears on cool dudes

My great-uncle Leon is 80-some years old and has a cool AF sense of style. Nowadays his ears get cold easily, so I bought him this beanie to take on our trip to DC last month. Boom, toasty ears, no problem.

He loves his new beanie from American Giant Shop. It’s so simple, comfortable, and warm. Leon is a traditionalist and loves that this made in USA cap has minimal branding. Throw one in your winter travel bag next time and pretend you’re as cool as Leon. (Good luck with that.)

Factors We Considered When Picking Products

Silhouette of a traveling man in an airport wearing a fedora next to his luggage looking out towards the tarmac

There’s no magic formula for choosing hats in general — if it feels good and looks good, you’re off to a good start. But when you add “travel-friendly” as a requirement, you’ve got to consider specific attributes, including:

When traveling, a hat will either be on your head or mixed in with your other gear. When it’s on your head, it may be there for hours, exposed to sun, wind, and rain. You’ll sweat into it, and at some point it may start to itch. Choose hats that are soft, properly sized, and won’t lose their shape.

In general, wool and synthetics are more water-resistant, breathable, and odor-free than cotton. I mostly prefer 100% wool because it doesn’t get soaking wet the way cotton does, and it stays fresh-smelling for longer periods.

Style of Hat

Headgear comes in two basic flavors — Hats (‘has a brim but no visor’) and Caps (‘has a visor but no brim’) — and both travel equally well. Choose from this list based on the conditions you’ll encounter when traveling and then add a dash of your personal style. You can’t go wrong… unless you choose a neon plaid propellor beanie.

On a serious note, please  do  choose hats that offer good sun protection. The folks at  SkinCancer.org say, “the best hats for sun protection have a brim of at least three inches to shade the face, scalp, neck, shoulders and upper back.”

Packability/Crushability

Once you take off your hat, it’s got to go somewhere… in a coat pocket, perhaps, or flattened and layered into your luggage. If you want it spring back into proper shape, look for products that advertise as ‘crushable’ or ‘packable.’ Wool felt performs well, as do many synthetics. However, straw is brittle and will crack or crumble, and cotton will wrinkle and crease.

Sad story: I took a spiffy fedora with me to Europe last year, but had to hastily jam it into my bag at one point. In Italy, it emerged crushed and never regained its former glory. Since then I’ve only traveled with caps that can take a beating and still look fresh.

You put a lot of effort and expense into planning the perfect trip, so don’t cheap out on that fashion statement sitting above your ears. Invest in one of these quality products that are sure to survive your globetrotting adventures. Go for it.

When you look good, you feel good. Spending a little extra on an accessory like a hat may seem superfluous, but in reality, can you put a price on self-confidence? Yes. Yes, you can. But most of these hats are affordable and can be the perfect accent for any travel outfit. Splurge a little, buddy!

Man in a field wearing a 2023 fedora and looking towards mountains and meadows in the distance

Wherever you’re headed next, you can’t go wrong with any of the best men’s travel hats. But which one? Will you tour the Temple of Doom in your Indiana Jones Hat from Dorfman Pacific ? Swing up into the saddle in a cowboy hat from Overland ? Or make evening rounds in NYC wearing a snapback from Melin ?

Of course, there’s no reason to stop at just one new hat. I’ve got busy travel plans and the hat I take skiing in Telluride isn’t likely to be the same one I’ll need while sailing in the Mediterranean. And I’m always in the market for a new EDC hat for running errands or people-watching on the mall.

Just remember that the key element of any good travel hat for men is that it must be crushable, packable, and weather resistant. ‘Stylish’ is my close second consideration since I need all the help I can get in that department.

And third, let’s not forget why hats were invented in the first place — to protect us from the imposing sun. A hat that aces all three of those considerations will be your reliable travel companion for years to come.

Best Travel Hat for Easy Packing | 16 Packable Hats

Hats can be challenging to fit in your pack. This list covers packable baseball caps, beanies, and sun hats that'll fit into any bag, no matter the destination.

Best Travel Hat for Easy Packing | 16 Packable Hats

No matter the time of year, you may find yourself packing a hat for your next trip. The best travel hat for you will depend on the weather, location, and how you like to travel. A winter hat or beanie makes more sense if you're going somewhere cold. For hot, sunny climates, a sun hat will protect you from the sun (crazy, right?). For anything in between, a classic ball cap adds something to your wardrobe, keeps the sun out of your eyes, and covers up a bad hair day.

We've compiled a list of our favorites from all three categories to help you find the best travel hat: packable baseball caps, packable winter hats, and packable sun hats. There are various materials, designs, and levels of packability, so there's something for everyone. Some of them even come in wild colors if you want to add flair to your outfit!

Before diving into the list, you should decide what you expect from a travel hat. It’s best to base your needs on prior experience and where you frequently travel because, in the end, that's the best judgment of what you'll need. Staying warm is more important than looking cute climbing the Eiffel Tower in January, but this list of hats will help you do both! If you want something smaller, go with a packable hat. If you want something breathable and smell-free, go with something made from Merino Wool. The possibilities are endless!

Let's dive in…er, put a hat on?

Melin Pace Hydro

If you’re looking for a packable hat with features that bolster your headwear game on any vacation, look no further than the Melin Pace Hydro. It floats, which means it’s handy for water adventures—we wore it in the ocean and were able to find it easily any time a rogue wave came in a little too fast and knocked it off. It has anti-microbial technology to ensure it stays clean and smell-free, and is breathable and recycled. What’s not to love about that?

The brim on this travel hat is flatter than some users might be used to, but you can train some curvature into it over time. The exterior has reflective accents so that you can be seen on early morning or late night runs, there are holes in the materials for breathability, and you can throw it in the washer occasionally to ensure it stays clean.

This isn’t the most packable hat; however, it folds up easily and will fit inside most daypacks and larger slings without an issue. It’s lightweight, too, so it won’t hold you back if you attach it to your crossbody bag. Depending on how you travel, this might be the best travel hat for you!

  • It floats, which is ideal for aquatic adventures
  • The anti-microbial technology ensures it doesn’t get musty
  • It isn’t the most packable hat on this list
  • Some users won’t like how flat the brim is

Gravel The Travelers Hat

The Gravel Travelers Hat looks like something you’d wear running errands across your hometown, but it has features that make it one of the best travel hat models for those looking for a packable hat for their next trip. Plus, it comes in seven colorways at the time of writing, so you can find one that fits the vibe you’re trying to accomplish. How fun is that?

If you’ve got a larger head or a lot of hair, you might find the fit isn’t perfect. Plus, the five-panel style might not be for everyone. However, we dig the look of this hat and its sleek and subtle logo. Some packable hat models are logo-free, which can look awkward. However, with the Gravel Travelers Hat, you’ve got something on the front panel that isn’t too in your face, which is the best of both worlds.

When you’re ready to travel, you can fold it down and use it as a packable hat. After unfolding it, there may be some wrinkles initially, but we’ve found that they go away quickly! Whether exploring a new city or hitting the trail in a sunny climate, this might be the best travel hat for your next trip.

  • It folds down smaller than you’d expect
  • The logo is sleek and adds flair
  • Larger heads might not fit
  • The design isn’t for everyone

getaway Pack Light Hat 2.0 Review

Sometimes, packable gear gets a steep price hike because it’s an item known to be used for travel. However, that isn't the case with the getaway Pack Light Hat. At the time of writing, it comes in at under $40, which is a solid deal for a packable hat that packs down small enough to fit into your palm. Plus, the design is simple, offering a sleek look that goes with almost any outfit you might bring on your next trip.

Whereas this hat looks sleek, the design can look slightly bulky on some. If your head doesn’t fill out the materials, this may be more of an issue. However, for most users, this won’t be a problem. For the price, durable materials, and packability features, this is one of the best travel hat models that comes at a budget-friendly price. There are five colorways, at least at the time of writing!

  • Comes at a budget-friendly price
  • It utilizes durable materials, so you don’t have to worry about being gentle with it
  • Materials can look slightly bulky if your head shape doesn’t fill it out
  • Style won’t match all outfits

Parapack P-CAP

Okay, ultralight travelers, this next one is for you. The Parapack P-Cap is a packable hat that also makes it on the list of best travel hat models because it is comfortable and easy to pack and unpack. It’s easy to adjust the size for any head width, it’s UPF 50+ rated, and it’s crafted from recycled materials, too. What’s not to love about that?

Considering how light this thing is (one ounce—that’s the same as a single AA battery!), the materials aren’t as durable as other packable hats on this list. However, that doesn’t mean this thing won’t stand the test of time. It isn’t the most structured hat, which can make it look a little goofy at times; however, it also adds to its breathability, which is helpful. Overall, it wears like you’d expect a packable hat to, so keep that in mind.

If you’re looking for a hat that can pack down tiny, is incredibly lightweight, and comes in multiple colorways, this might be the best travel hat for your next trip!

  • One of the most packable hats on the market
  • The materials are durable for how thin they are
  • The creases can stay longer than you’d like
  • It looks sporty, which might not be your goal

Western Rise Versa Hat Review

If you’re a digital nomad looking for the best travel hat for your journey, you’ve probably come across the Western Rise Versa Hat. Online, it’s touted as one of the most versatile packable hats on the market (hence the name). You might be wondering, does it live up to the hype?

For the most part, yes! It’s sleek, stylish, and packs down small enough to fit inside most places you’d try to store a hat. We’ve found it comfortable across wearers, although it can look large on smaller headed-travelers. There are six colorways available, but none are very saturated, which might be a bummer for some. However, all the available colors are easy to match, which is ideal for the only hat you’ll be bringing on a long trip!

If you’re looking for a do-it-all cap that’ll fit into almost any adventure you can throw at it, this might be the best travel hat for your next journey across the globe! Or, take it to the grocery store. That works, too!

  • It’s a do-it-all hat that works for most situations
  • Packs down small enough for world travel
  • Might not work for smaller-headed travelers
  • No vibrant colors are available at the time of writing

Outdoor Research Radar Pocket Cap

If you’re looking for a packable hat that doesn’t look exactly like every other travel hat on the market, check out the Outdoor Research Radar Pocket Cap. It has a unique style tailored to outdoor activities or crossing a sweaty concrete jungle and offers some of the best sun protection.

Outdoor Research rates this hat for three seasons and touts the TransAction™ headband as an excellent way to keep sweat away from your eyes. It folds up small enough to fit into your pocket, which is where the name comes from. There are three sizes to choose from, so you don’t have to worry about adjusting it once it arrives. There are six colorways available, too, which we dig.

This style won’t be the answer to everyone’s dream of finding the best travel hat for their next adventure. That said, we enjoy the look and think it’s a solid change of pace from other options available on this list!

  • It has a unique style compared to other travel hats
  • It offers UPF 40 protection
  • The look might not work for everyone
  • It isn’t adjustable, so you need the exact right size

Fjallraven Tab Hat

There’s something special about a winter hat that looks like it could have been handcrafted by somebody’s grandma a few decades ago. Whereas the Fjallraven Tab Hat doesn’t go that far, it has a unique heritage look that utilizes modern fabric technology to ensure you stay warm on your next trip.

It’s crafted from waffle-knit recycled polyester, which is comfortable on your head and good for the environment. It proudly uses no animal-derived materials, either, which is a bonus for animal lovers. At the time of writing, five colorways are available, so you can get one that fits the winter vibe you’re going for, regardless of the destination of your next trip.

This isn’t the warmest hat on the market; however, for the price, cold-weather protection provided, and comfort offered, this is one of the best travel hats for fall, light winter, and spring adventures.

  • It has a heritage look with modern fabrics
  • Will work for three seasons
  • Not the warmest hat on the market
  • Small on larger heads, which means it may not fully cover your ears

Smartwool Thermal Merino Stowe Pocket Beanie

Some travelers might struggle to pack a winter hat in their packing list because it feels like a waste of space. After all, most people will survive without one, and it only has one actual use. Can you survive without it? Yes. Should you have to? No! Enter the Smartwool Thermal Merino Stowe Pocket Beanie.

This packable hat is super breathable, folds up incredibly small, and keeps you warm on days that aren’t below freezing. Plus, you can use it as a liner with another hat, which offers extra comfort and heat on frigid days. This is ideal for trips into cold weather featuring outdoor adventures; wear just the Smartwool hat to explore town, though we recommend layering it with another one when heading out into the wild since it’s not the warmest option out there.

It’s crafted from Merino Wool, which is breathable and moisture-wicking, which we dig. If you’re looking for a light hat that won’t break the bank or weigh you down, the Smartwool Thermal Merino Stowe Pocket Beanie might be the best travel hat for you!

  • Packs down tiny
  • Layers very well if you’re heading to frigid climates
  • Alone, it might not be warm enough for super cold trips
  • Not many styling options—what you see is what you get

Arc'teryx Mallow Toque Hat

Sometimes, you want a winter hat that looks good and keeps you warm at the same time. However, many models will excel in one feature or the other, not at the same time. Not the Arc'teryx Mallow Toque Hat! It comes in two colorways, is crafted from a 50/50 blend of tech wool (a polyester/wool mixture) and recycled polyester, and has unique heritage styling that matches most outfits.

The price might seem high for what you get, and whereas we agree with that, this thing is quite warm compared to other hats that look similar. The combination of fabrics keeps you warm without suffocating your head, which is ideal for trips where you’ll be active or walking a lot. The two colorways might not work for all travelers, but they’re more unique than many options on this list, which we dig.

If you’re looking for something a little different from a brand that can be trusted to keep you warm, this might be the best travel hat for your next cold-weather adventure!

  • It looks more stylish than other winter hats
  • Tech wool adds durability and functionality
  • The price is high for what you get
  • Not many colorway options

Patagonia Better Sweater Beanie

Patagonia has been a trusted brand for outdoor enthusiasts for decades. However, just because their gear is tailored for wilderness enthusiasts doesn’t mean that it can’t be used in the city. The Patagonia Better Sweater Beanie is as soft as your favorite sweater, utilizes bluesign® materials, and matches any other Patagonia gear you already have on your packing list.

This isn’t the warmest hat on the market, but isn’t meant to be. Most people don’t need to traverse sub-zero temperatures regularly; if you do, this isn’t the hat for you. This hat does well on an average winter day, in the fall or spring. It’s lightweight, easy to pack down, and comes in four easy-to-match colorways.

It feels a little pricey for what you get at around $50; however, its durability, usability, and sustainability make it a candidate for the best travel hat for your next trip!

  • A warm hat from a trusted brand
  • It matches other Patagonia and similar branded gear
  • This isn’t the warmest hat on the market, especially for the price
  • It might make your head itch slightly

Minus33 Merino Wool Ridge Cuff Beanie

Who said that Merino Wool has to be expensive? The Minus33 Merino Wool Ridge Cuff Beanie proves that Merino Wool doesn’t need to empty your wallet and is one of the best travel fabrics on the market.

This hat is currently available with Amazon Prime shipping, so you can get it for that trip you just remembered that you should have prepared for. It comes in at under $25, which is excellent for Merino Wool. If you aren’t familiar with the material, check out our guide !

We feel that this hat looks a little cheap, which isn’t the end of the world, but it will deter some users. However, over two dozen colorways are available at the time of writing, so you can find one that fits your vibe.

For the price and materials, this is one of the best travel hat models for winter adventures on a budget.

  • This hat is budget-friendly
  • It’s crafted from Merino Wool, so it wicks moisture and can be worn a bunch between washing
  • It looks cheaper than other Merino options we’ve seen—you get what you pay for
  • Material quality isn’t quite up to standard

BAGGU Packable Sun Hat

As far as fashion is concerned, an excellent packable sun hat is only as good as the colorways it comes in. The BAGGU Packable Sun Hat comes in 11 colorways, at least at the time of writing, including fun ones like Clouds, Rowena, and Lemon Tree. In addition to having fun colorways, the brim spans 19.75 inches of coverage in all, which offers ample protection from the sun.

With any sun hat, you risk the wind catching the brim. The BAGGU Packable Sun Hat has materials that make this part of the hat flat, making it easier to catch the wind. However, the tie cord ensures your hat won’t fly off your head, even in the worst wind storms.

The hat is crafted from organic cotton and is machine washable, both of which make for a capable and long-lasting travel companion. If protection from the sun and a cute-looking accessory are what you’re after, this might be the best travel hat for your next trip!

  • A ton of fun colorways are available
  • It has a wide brim for sun protection
  • Can get caught in the wind fairly easily
  • The style isn’t for everyone

FURTALK Beach Hat

Some vacations will take you to the beach, so it’s best to have planned protection from the sun’s rays while you’re there. Even if you wear sunscreen, keeping the sun out of your eyes while you enjoy the water, read a book, or listen to the waves is nice.

The FURTALK Beach Hat comes at a budget-friendly price, has multiple colorways available, and folds down to pack it more easily. When we shoved it into a travel backpack, it came out on the other side of a few airplane rides without any noticeable creases. It’s crafted from paper, cotton, and polyester, which give it the unique straw-hat look without being super breakable.

That said, this isn’t the most durable hat on the market, so it’s best to try and keep it out of harm’s way. It doesn’t have a drawstring on the bottom to keep it from falling off, so it might not be the best choice for a windy day, though we found it fit pretty securely and stayed on well.

Given the price point, sun protection offered, and trendy look, this might be the best packable sun hat for you.

  • It comes in at a budget-friendly price
  • Packs down well for such a large hat
  • Not the most durable hat on this list
  • It’s a one-trick pony; there aren’t a ton of uses for this hat

Wallaroo Hat Company Montecito

Everyone should have an adventure hat that meets their needs. Whether that be a small, packable hat, something that works for the outdoor adventures you’re accustomed to going on, or a hat that offers protection from the sun, it’s an integral part of any packing list. The Wallaroo Montecito is perfect for trips in the sun because of its packable size and stellar sun protection.

You can fold it down to fit inside your daypack or a large sling, and the materials boast UPF 50+ protection, so your head doesn’t get torched by the sun. It comes in around $60, which isn’t bad for a travel hat; however, it is far from the most packable hat on this list and requires a little finnessing to get into your travel bag.

The combination of style and sun protection offered by the Wallaroo Montecito makes this one of the best travel hat models around and one that you’ll probably end up wearing at home, too.

  • Offers UPF 50+ protection
  • Has a focus on style as well as function
  • Doesn’t pack down that small
  • Not a great option for rugged trips because of its basic materials

Tilley Dunes Drifter Hat

Some sun hats are more for looks than packability, which is fine. However, sometimes, you want something you can pack down easily but still offers sun protection. Enter the Tilley Dunes Drifter Hat. This model is easy to pack, is crafted from lightweight materials, and looks stylish and fun at the same time. Two colors are available, too, so you can get one that fits the vibe you’re shooting for.

There are only two sizes, which feels limiting compared to other Tilley hats on the market. You can adjust it once you’ve got it on, which is helpful. The drawstring ensures it won’t fly off your head in the wind and offers a way to hang onto it without holding it in your hand. Just wear it around your neck!

For the durability, lightweight materials used, and sun protection, this might be the best packable sun hat for your next trip into the wild.

  • A do-it-all hat for any adventure, urban or rural
  • The drawstring is helpful and easy to use
  • Only two sizes to choose from
  • It is not the most stylish hat, even if it is functional

Outdoor Research Helios Sun Hat

For those who are serious about sun protection, it’s essential to have a do-it-all model in your arsenal that can handle any trip. Here at Pack Hacker, that’s the Outdoor Research Helios Sun Hat. We don’t feel that it’s always the best travel hat for the job, but it does most things well, and we’ll explain how.

The materials are durable enough to handle the bumps and knocks of travel, from days fishing for trout on the river to afternoons at the beer garden in the city. However, the fabric is lightweight, so it won’t take up much room or weight inside your pack when you aren’t using it. Remember, it’ll rain in the desert every now and then! Because of the chosen materials (nylon and polyester), it’s easy to pack down.

As we mentioned earlier, this hat isn’t perfect for every trip. However, it has a use for most adventures, and that’s what counts!

  • Offers excellent sun protection
  • Utilizes durable materials
  • Not suitable for fancier occasions
  • Lightweight materials might not be the most durable

So, there you have it: some of the best travel hat brands and models available today. Hopefully, you’ve found a new companion to accompany you on your next trip, whether you’re going to Jersey or Japan. Happy travels!

How To Travel With Hats

Finding a hat you love is one thing. Making sure it gets to your destination safely is another. The most important tip on how to travel with hats is to pick styles and materials that are durable. The hats recommended above can easily be backing into a suitcase without fear of breaking or damaging them. But if you’re adamant about bringing a hat that’s not designed for travel, you’ll want to learn how to pack a hat for travel.

How to pack a hat for travel

If you want to bring a non-travel-specific hat, there are some steps that you should take to protect your hat while you travel. First, make sure to pack your hat at the bottom of the suitcase. This might seem counterintuitive, but it gives you the opportunity to create a cushion for the hat to take some weight off. Stuff the inside of your hat with socks or clothes and pack the rest of your soft items around it. Don’t place anything on the crown of the hat. This will help your hat maintain its shape without crumpling under the weight of the world or getting wrinkled in transit.

If you find that your hat gets wrinkled or misshapen along the journey, try these tips to smooth it out once you arrive.

Carrying on a hat for travel

One foolproof way to protect your hat while you travel is just to keep it on your head! This way the safety and care of the hat is guaranteed. However, it can become a bit cumbersome to handle during security and board. So another option (if your hat has a chin cord),  is to tie it to a luggage strap. Or, choose a hat with a clip that can easily attach to your purse or backpack. Then, you can just carry it on as a part of your personal item. You could also use a hat box to protect your hat, and bring that along as carry on luggage.

However, if you have a packable hat, none of that matters! You can add it to your luggage without any worry or stress.

Whether you’re sneaking off for a beach weekend or heading out to the mountains, a quick weekend getaway deserves a good bag of its own. The best weekender bags will hold enough clothes for a few different activities without weighing you down — and of course, those activities all require shoes of their own. Rather than letting all that sand or trail dirt collect on your clothes, a separate shoe compartment keeps your dirty footwear contained and clothes unbothered.

We tested 37 bags, including weekenders, duffels, and convertible garment bags, checking for capacity, design, portability, durability, and value across all contenders. While we’ll keep our tests going for a total of six months, upon our initial testing, these were our winners for the best weekender bags with shoe compartments.

Best Overall

Béis the weekender.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Organization 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Portability 4.5 /5
  • Durability 4.8 /5

Plenty of space, smart structure, a slew of organizational features, and a reasonable price tag all put this weekender ahead of the competition.

If you're flying with this bag, you'll need to place it in an overhead bin because of its size.

Béis has been popping up on stylish travelers’ radar for a while, and its popularity is well-deserved. We were extremely impressed by the Weekender’s capacity, holding everything we needed with space leftover for a laptop in the designated pocket. It can basically fit everything you’d put in a rolling carry-on, thanks to the large zippered bottom compartment and roomy main space. The main compartment opens similar to a folding laundry hamper, with a rectangular shape held open by a wire frame, creating an extra-spacious opening to fit in all your items without having to squish them. Even better, it can still fit in an overhead bin even when fully packed.

You’ll also find a whole slew of organizational features inside and outside the bag, with external pockets on either side (including one that can unzip on the bottom to become a trolley pass-through), a padded laptop pocket with a fabric fastener strap to keep your computer in place, internal slip and zipper pockets, and more. Even when loaded up, we found it comfortable to carry via either the hand straps or the padded, adjustable shoulder strap, with no digging into your shoulder or annoying banging into your leg or hip. It also held up well against being shoved off the counter multiple times, and everything inside stayed nearly perfectly in place. The only scuffing happened to the small feet on the bottom, but really, no one is looking at the bottom of your bag anyway. The cherry on top is the affordable price tag, coming in at just over $100, and six colors to choose from, whether you prefer neutral beige or trendy pink.

Cotopaxi Viaje Weekender Bag

  • Portability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

This durable tote features exterior straps for a yoga mat, a towel, or a longboard for a weekend on the go.

It can only fit about two days worth of clothing, so it may not work for overpackers.

This bag earned a perfect score during testing, and we especially loved it for its lightweight, durable material and thoughtful features, like the exterior straps on the outside that can hold long items like a yoga mat or a towel. The zippers felt sturdy and smooth, and we liked that they had little tags on them to make it easier to open and close them. This bag does not have a crossbody strap like most weekenders — instead, it has two short handles and two longer handles so you can either carry it by your hands or over your shoulder like a tote bag. The material feels like it can handle tough outdoor weather conditions and not get ruined, which would be great for camping or a beach day. It can only fit about two days worth of clothing, but that keeps it from getting too heavy since it doesn’t have the crossbody strap, and the bottom compartment adds some extra space.

The Details: 21 x 15 x 12 inches | 1.5 pounds | 35-liter capacity | Recycled polyester

Best Rolling Duffel

Calpak stevyn duffel.

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Portability 4 /5

The Stevyn offers solid capacity, design, and durability.

There’s no tote-style carry option; just hand carry or a longer cross-body strap.

If you want not just a shoe pocket, but also a pocket for everything else, go for the Stevyn. Calpak’s duffel is the perfect size for a weekend — not too big, but still roomy enough to fit a few outfits. It’s simple but well-designed, with its shoe compartment on the bottom as well as multiple interior pockets. It stands up on its own, which is great for packing. There’s one small external pocket, as well as a luggage trolley sleeve, though we would have liked more external pockets. Carry it by hand with two short handles or use the one long cross-body strap; while this strap is padded and comfortable, we would have liked to be able to use the hand-carry handles to carry it over our shoulder, tote-style. It was very durable in our tests, showed no effects from getting tossed around, and seemed easy to wipe down in the event of any dirt. There are nine colors to choose from, including two prints, and you can also upgrade to a larger wheeled version if you don’t want to carry it or need more space.

The Details: 19.5 x 14 x 10.5 inches | 47-liter capacity | 3.3 pounds | Polyester

Monos Metro Weekender

The Metro holds a truly impressive amount within its sleek exterior, which also won’t show scuffs even if you have to gate-check it.

It can get heavy quickly, especially if you take advantage of its large capacity.

If you believe your vacation style starts before you’ve even left home, the Monos Weekender is your best bet. The capacity is truly impressive, fitting clothing for five days while still being able to slide under an airplane seat — we even managed to fit four pairs of shoes in the bottom shoe compartment. It also has a laptop pocket in the back exterior and several interior organizational pockets (though we would have liked a water bottle holder as well). When carrying, use the trolley sleeve (which you can also zip to turn into a pocket) to place it on top of a suitcase, sling it on with a removable shoulder strap, or use the hand-carry handles in your hands or over your shoulder. We tested the nylon model (it also comes in a vegan leather option) and found it ridiculously durable, even when we had to check it through on a flight. You can choose from four darker shades in the nylon style, or three different brown vegan leather hues; both styles are water-resistant.

The Details: 19.25 x 10.25 x 14.75 inches | 5.18 (nylon) or 5.34 (vegan leather) pounds | 47.5-liter capacity | Nylon or microfiber vegan leather

Best Lightweight

Dagne dover landon carryall bag.

Dagne Dover

  • Ease of Use 5 /5

This softside bag feels both spacious and high-quality.

It does develop some visible creases at the fold points, but they aren’t too noticeable.

If you want to make sure your bag doesn’t weigh you down, the neoprene or mesh of the Landon may make it the best weekender for you. We tested the large version, which comes in 10 colors in neoprene and three colors in Dagne Dover’s air mesh fabric; there are also four other sizes available, from XS to XL. It had plenty of space for our packing list and could even have fit an extra pair of shoes or additional outfit with the sides unsnapped. Rather than a specific separate compartment, it instead includes a shoe-specific bag that matches the external material. There are also several interior pockets, one exterior pocket ideal for stashing your phone, and a trolley sleeve. The hand-carry handles snap together, and you can also snap down the zipper on the sides to make it more compact. If you don’t want to hand-carry, there’s also an adjustable, removable shoulder strap. Because the fabric is so flexible, we found it developed some creases at the fold points, which aren’t too noticeable but did keep it from looking completely pristine.

The Details: 16.5 x 9 x 11 inches | 3.06 pounds | 29-liter capacity | Neoprene or air mesh

Best Garment Bag

Mark & graham commuter 2-in-1 garment bag.

Mark & Graham

  • Quality 5 /5
  • Performance 5 /5

This neutral bag is packed with hidden pockets and can hold everything you need.

It is on the pricier end.

Getting your initials on your luggage is an easy way to feel extra-fancy (or amp up your gifting), and that’s just one of the ways this garment bag will enhance your trip. It folds from a flat garment bag into a duffel, with two separate pouches for shoes on the ends. It’s easy to manipulate throughout the process, with a smooth folding process and zippers. It held all of our packing list with ease, and has thoughtful features like a phone pocket, a hook for clothing, and internal button compartments. It also still felt light even after being packed full, while still feeling durable enough to stand up to stiletto scratches, and the leather padding on the straps was very comfortable.

The Details: 22 x 10 x 10 inches | Nylon and leather

Best Organization

Arlo skye the weekender.

There are tons of pockets, pouches, and places to organize pretty much anything you need for a weekend away.

The padding does not move with the adjustable shoulder strap, so it may not align perfectly with your shoulder.

This structured weekender looks very minimalist but, like many of our favorite Arlo Skye luggage pieces , it has a ton of thoughtful features for packing swiftly and efficiently. There are slip pockets and a big zippered pocket on the inside, and a very large zippered pocket on both sides of the bag (large enough to fit a jacket if needed) containing various slip pockets and smaller zippered pockets for laptops, tablets, chargers, books, and more. The shoe compartment on the side is also very helpful for separating items. Although the bag is spacious, it’s still compact enough to fit underneath an airplane seat as a personal item , and it’s lightweight and easy to carry. The shoulder strap is adjustable, but the padding on it is not, so it may not line up perfectly with your shoulder unless you have the strap set at just the right length. We tested the lighter mint color of this bag, which didn’t get dirty or damaged at all when we flung it off a table onto the floor multiple times. If mint isn’t your vibe, it also comes in black. Another plus: it has an RFID lining for added security.

The Details: 20.5 x 9.1 x 11.4 inches | 2.4 pounds | 31-liter capacity | Nylon/polyester blend

It’s on the smaller side, especially if you want to bring a laptop.

If you want to travel light and in leather, opt for the Mission duffel. The material feels very high-quality, with stylish blue accents, and the bag is easy and comfortable to transport thanks to padded handles and a removable padded shoulder strap. This sleek pick works best for overnight trips as it will be a tight squeeze inside for several outfit changes along with toiletries and a laptop. The shoe compartment has its own zipper, but that eats into the interior of the main pocket (and will take up a decent percentage of the available space with larger footwear). We did encounter some problems with the zipper sticking and snagging when the bag was packed full, so be mindful of how much is stashed inside.

Best Budget

Etronik large overnight weekender.

  • Organization 4 /5
  • Design 4 /5
  • Durability 3.5 /5

This budget-friendly pick includes two shoe covers and a small pouch, and the bottom shoe compartment has air vents.

We wish the nylon material was thicker to better protect the bag, and there is no laptop sleeve.

This $50 weekender is an amazing value considering how spacious it is and all of its thoughtful features. The nylon material is waterproof and the bottom shoe compartment has two air vents to prevent shoes or dirty clothing from stinking up the bag. We were able to fit two pairs of shoes, including heeled booties, in the bottom compartment, and we think there was enough room to even fit taller boots. There are two external pockets to hold water bottles, a USB charging port with a phone pocket nearby, and more pockets inside — although there is no laptop sleeve. The bag also comes with two shoe bag covers and a small pouch that you can use for small items, which we thought was great for maximizing storage and keeping items protected. The 55-liter bag was pretty large but not overwhelming to wear or carry thanks to the lightweight material and shoulder padding. We do wish the material was a little thicker and more structured to better protect belongings, but we were impressed by this budget-friendly option nonetheless. It is also available in more than 40 colors, so there truly is something for everyone.

The Details: 21.7 x 16.5 x 9.4 inches | 2.2 pounds | 55-liter capacity | Nylon

Best Colors

Calpak luka duffel bag.

  • Durability 4 /5

The puffy material and fun color options make this weekender stand out without being too bulky.

There is a laptop sleeve, but it does not have any protective cushioning.

One of our favorite things about this poofy, lightweight bag is that it comes in about 20 different colors that are so fun to choose from, including bright, limited-edition shades like watermelon, bubble gum, celery, cobalt, and rose gold, or more neutral staples like chocolate, oatmeal, and matte black. There are so many options that it’s nearly impossible to pick just one. The duffel comes with a removable crossbody strap and long, puffy shoulder strap, and we found the shoulder straps much more comfortable to carry than the crossbody strap during testing. There is a shoe compartment that you can access from the side of the bag that ultimately lines the bottom of the bag. You should be able to fit two pairs of shoes or one pair of boots comfortably inside. There are multiple pockets inside for organization, including a laptop sleeve — although we wish it were padded for more protection. The size of the bag is compact, fitting enough for a two-night trip, but it also comes in a larger size for longer trips.

The Details: 12 x 16 x 7 inches | 2.1 pounds | 22-liter capacity | Polyester

Béis The Convertible Mini Weekender

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Design 3.5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

This is the perfect combination of portability and packing space, plus it's easy to both pack and carry.

You may encounter some trouble closing the top if you overpack it, and the zippers holding the shoe compartment in place showed some durability concerns.

Don’t be fooled by the “mini” here — this bag had more than enough space for two to three days’ worth of clothing. We did struggle slightly closing the bag with the full packing list included, since the wire frame that holds it open for easy packing was stiff when the bag was at full capacity. You still get Béis’ removable laptop sleeve, zippered side pocket, and slip pockets, which we found to be the perfect amount of pockets. The bottom compartment also fully zips off, giving you a separate packing cube and smaller tote if you want something even more compact. It’s the perfect size for a short trip, and can even fit under some airplane seats. The straps are comfortable to carry in either formation as well. We did have some concerns during our durability tests; after we dropped it off the table one time, the bottom compartment zippers split, raising some concerns about their longevity.

The Details: 16 x 8 x 15.7 inches | 33 liters | 3.4 pounds | Poly canvas

Most Durable

Travelpro x travel + leisure drop-bottom weekender bag.

Bloomingdale's

The shoe compartment easily fits four or five pairs of shoes.

We wish it had more pockets or other organizational features.

This spacious weekender holds multiple outfits, a toiletry kit, makeup bag, and more in its wide main compartment and the separate shoe compartment easily fits up to five pairs of shoes. The main compartment also features a zippered pocket inside to store valuables and one small open pocket on the outside for items you'll want quick access to while you're on the go. We love that this large bag still fits easily under airplane seats, so it can be used as either a personal item or carry-on bag, depending on your packing needs. Throughout our tests, we tossed the entire packed bag off a table and the fabric didn't show any signs of rips, snags, or even dirt transfer. We also love the padded shoulder strap that made carrying the heavy duffel comfortable and distributed the weight evenly. Unlike other bags with shoe compartments, the Travelpro x Travel + Leisure Drop-bottom Weekender's shoe compartment can also fully detach from the rest of the bag, so you can make it even more compact if needed.

The Details: 15 x 8.5 x 9 inches | 42 liters | 3.3 pounds | Cotton, polyester, and leather trim

Other Weekender Bags With Shoe Compartments We Liked

Here is another bag we tested and liked, although it had some shortcomings.

Halfday The Garment Duffel : This bag starts out as a flat garment bag, then folds up into a duffel shape, creating an additional space in the middle. Overall, we found it easy to pack and use, with well-built and well-planned construction and thoughtful details. However, you can only fit one shoe on each side, limiting the number of pairs you can bring (which is extra problematic if you’re packing for, say, a wedding weekend).

Our tests for the best weekenders with shoe compartments focused on five key attributes: capacity, design, portability, durability, and value. We tested a total of 37 products, including weekenders, duffels, and convertible garment-style bags, and will continue to put them through their paces over the course of six months.

We packed each bag with two pairs of pants (sweatpants and jeans), four shirts, one jacket, one pair of shoes, and a full toiletry bag, noting how much space was (or wasn’t) left once it was full. While packing, we noted the organizational and structural features of each bag, particularly the pockets and zippers. Once the bags were full, we walked around carrying them in all the styles they had available — using the shoulder strap(s), across the body, over the shoulder, and in hand, and noting how comfortable and easy it was to do so. Then it was time for the durability test, which meant dropping the fully packed bags from waist height three to five times, aiming to land on different parts of the bag each time. Once they survived, we also performed an overall value assessment to consider how much we would be willing to pay for each bag, based on their quality, design, and any included accessories.

Tips for Buying Weekenders With Separate Shoe Compartments

Consider your destinations and use cases.

Ideally you’ll only need to own one weekender, so consider your most frequent weekend trip scenarios. Are you traveling a lot for weddings? A foldable garment bag may be your best pick for helping keep your formalwear unwrinkled. Heading into the country? You may want to look for something made of a more durable material and with a larger capacity to hold more gear. You’ll also want to think about your personal tendencies to under- or over-pack and decide whether you want a smaller or larger bag.

Factor in your additional organizational needs

Shoe compartments aren’t the only form of organization out there. If you’re traveling with your laptop, you may want a bag that has a separate padded sleeve or compartment to keep it safe. One-bag-only travelers may want more external pockets to have smaller items within easy reach in transit, or perhaps you’re an organization fiend who wants an internal pocket for every individual item.

Marketing, mostly. Consider a weekender to be a smaller, trendy subcategory of the classic duffel. Weekenders tend to be smaller, while duffel bags overall come in a wider range of sizes. They also tend to be a little more stylish and have more organizational pockets, though that varies across brands. Weekenders also tend to have a few more vertical inches than more cylindrical duffel styles.

If you choose one of our picks above, your shoes will already have a snug little spot of their own to call home. But in addition to a shoe compartment, there are a few other methods you can employ. If you are a devotee of the packing cube lifestyle, many sets now come with included shoe bags, or you can just repurpose one of your packing cubes (though if you prefer a mesh style, dirt may be able to escape that way). If you’d prefer to reuse items around your house (props to you), you can also wrap your shoes in a plastic grocery bag or tuck them inside a shower cap.

Most likely, yes; it depends on the size of your bag and your airline’s size restrictions. Most overhead bin carry-ons are around 22 x 14 x 9 inches, while underseat personal items have much more variance by airline. Check the regulations of your airline to make sure, especially if you’re flying an airline that’s especially strict about the overhead bin vs. underseat storage. Since many of our best weekenders are soft-sided, though, you may have some extra wiggle room if you don’t pack them to capacity.

Families furious as Transport NSW’s weekend travel cap ’more than doubles’

Struggling NSW families have slammed a change to the weekend public transport cap which sees unlimited travel go from $2.80 to $8.05.

Public transport users have been left disappointed after discovering that travel costs in NSW are changing, leaving them out of pocket.

From July 6, the daily cap on weekend travel using an Opal card in Sydney is t emporarily increasing in a bid to manage social distancing measures on transport .

Under a travel cap, you can use bus, train, light rail and ferry services as much as you like and pay no more than the stated capped fee.

For adults, the daily travel cap is going up from $2.80 to $8.05 while the concession fare is also increasing, going up from $2.80 to $4.

The cap had previously only applied on Sundays but from next weekend it is available on Saturdays too.

However the move, which increases an adult’s spend by $5.25 and a child’s by $1.20 to receive the unlimited travel benefit, hasn’t been welcomed by struggling families.

Transport NSW explained it is to “help spread weekend public transport loads” but it hasn’t stopped disappointed families branding the hike “horrendous” and pointing out it has come in the midst of a pandemic that has seen 1.6 million Australians move onto JobSeeker – support which is set to end in September.

“OMG that’s a huge hike!” one person wrote on Facebook.

“How can they hike up the fare by more than double?” another wrote.

“That’s a massive increase,” one said, adding it would mean they wouldn’t be able to travel anywhere on weekends anymore.

“That is terrible! What a rip-off … OK NSW government we’ll all jump in our cars and undo all the work we have done to get people using public transport! Disgusting really,” another commented.

The hike in the capped price has left struggling families furious. Picture: Dean Lewins/AAP

One mum explained that Sundays had been the only day her whole family could afford to travel, explaining that now it was no longer an option.

“Now it would cost almost $30. This is an insane increase. I’d rather drive and pay for parking. Way to encourage environmental responsibility.”

Transport NSW has said the move is temporary but no end date has been given.

Fares have also increased for bus and light rail travel for distances up to 3km during peak times to encourage walking or cycling.

And to also encourage people travelling throughout the day, there will be an off-peak travel discount of 50 per cent off travel on bus, train, metro and light rail services.

Transport Minister Andrew Constance said customers are encouraged to take advantage of the off-peak incentive to help stagger essential travel on the public transport network.

“The vast majority of commuters will benefit from these changes with either cheaper travel or no change to their fares. A third of commuters will save an average of $3.60 a week based on current travel patterns,” Mr Constance said.

New peak travel times will be introduced from July 6 as well. These are:

• 6.30am-10am on Sydney Trains, Sydney Metro, light rail and bus (currently 7am-9am)

• 3pm-7pm on Sydney Trains, Intercity Trains, Sydney Metro, light rail and bus (currently 4pm-6:30pm)

• 6am-10am on Intercity Trains (currently 6am-8am)

Travel outside these times will be eligible for the 50 per cent fare discount.

Daily Caps and Travelcards (2023)

This page details all the London wide caps and travelcards which apply to rail travel. These caps apply to all modes: National Rail, Underground, Overground, TfL Rail and DLR. The only rail services within zones 1-9 which are not covered are the Heathrow Express services between Paddington and the Airport; and Southeastern high-speed between St Pancras International and Stratford International; where Oyster and contactless can be used, but fares charged are additional to any caps. Travelcards are only valid to/from Stratford International if marked Plus HS1.

The first table lists all the daily caps. All Railcards refers to those that can be added to Oyster: 16-25, 26-30, Senior, Forces, Disabled and Annual Gold cards. Most refers to the same list apart from Disabled.

The second table lists all the paper travelcards. Note that there is no off-peak zone 1-4, use the zone 1-6 instead.

The third table lists the different season ticket prices. There are no single zone travelcard seasons. If the required combination isn’t shown (eg 5-7) then the price is the same for a larger zonal coverage (in this case 4-7). If only zone 2 is required then choose 2-3, for only zone 6 it is 5-6. Adult and Child (5-15) travelcards can be bought on paper. 16+, Jobcentre, Apprentice and Student 18+ travelcards all require the appropriate Oyster photocard to be held.

* Annual seasons are not available on Jobcentre Oyster cards.

+wj Travelcard seasons for zones 2-9 and 4-9 also include Watford Junction.

Opal fare changes from 16 October

weekend travel cap

Starting next month, you'll enjoy cheaper travel on Fridays, and there won't be any changes to the weekly travel caps as part of the annual Opal fare review.

From Monday 16 October, Opal fares will go up by an average of 3.7%, which is lower than the 7% annual increase in the Sydney Consumer Price Index in June 2023. Some changes are coming to travel rewards and caps:

  • Weekend fares will apply on Fridays, allowing all-day travel for no more than $8.90, with a 30% fare discount on metro, train, bus, and light rail services.
  • Child/Youth and Concession passengers can travel all day on Friday for no more than $4.45.
  • The weekly travel caps will remain in place: $50 for Adults, and $25 for Child/Youth and Concession card holders.
  • The $2.50 unlimited daily travel for Senior/Pensioner Opal card holders will remain in place.

However, half-price trips after eight journeys will no longer be available when the fare change comes into effect. Fewer people are travelling five days a week, resulting in lower uptake of the half- price trips benefit, which has dropped from 24% pre-Covid to 14% in 2023.

Sydney Airport Station Access Fee will also increase to $16.68 for Adults and $14.92 for Child/Youth, Concessions and Senior fares. This fee is set by the Airport Link Company for using the Domestic and International Airport train stations.

Example fares from 16 October 2023

Backpacking in Australia

  • Visiting the Blue Mountains by Train from Sydney

The Blue Mountains in Australia is a popular Sydney day trip destination, but my biggest tip for visiting the National Park is to NOT take a day trip from Sydney!  The Blue Mountains are well worth spending more time here – several days if you can – in order to make the most of this beautiful place.  If you’re considering a Blue Mountains day tour, let me share my tips for visiting the Blue Mountains by train from Sydney, including my pick of the best things to do in the Blue Mountains to keep you busy for several days.

What & Where is the Blue Mountains National Park?

Let’s begin with the basics.  The Blue Mountains National Park is part of the UNESCO-protected Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, in the New South Wales region of Australia, to the west of Sydney. The park covers more than 260,000 hectares and is the most visited national park in New South Wales.

If you’re wondering how the Blue Mountains got their name it is because the vast number of Eucalyptus trees in the park release droplets of oil, which together with dust and water vapour create a mist that hangs over the trees.  When the hot Sydney sunshine comes into contact with the mist, the light bounces off the droplets and creates a blue haze.

How Long Should You Spend in the Blue Mountains?

While a Blue Mountains day trip from Sydney might be a popular option for many people, I have to tell you that is a HUGE mistake!  There are far too many things to do in the Blue Mountains to cram into one day, so do yourself a favour and book at least one or two nights here to explore.

I spent 4 nights here and it wasn’t enough, so I would recommend at least two days in the Blue Mountains at a minimum, with three days being more comfortable – especially taking into account the journey time from Sydney if you come by train.

Everything I’ve mentioned below is based within a relatively small area, centred around Katoomba and Leura, it doesn’t even take into account any activities around Blackheath like the popular Govetts Leap, or anything in the Greater Blue Mountains area, so this really just scratches the surface.

The point is that however long you spend here it should definitely be more than a day!

A Blue Mountains Day Tour vs Train

If you can only spare one day in the Blue Mountains then either you should be prepared to get up early and take the train first thing in the morning to get you to the Blue Mountains early enough to make the most of the day, or take a Blue Mountains tour from Sydney which will include bus or coach transport.

However, instead of actually spending a full day in the Blue Mountains, the day tours only spend a few hours there.  Tours usually include a visit to Echo Point to see the Three Sisters and a ticket to Scenic World, perhaps followed by lunch in Leura, then the tours leave the Blue Mountains to visit a wildlife park close to Sydney and finish with a ferry trip on the river.

While you will get to see Scenic World and the Three Sisters (the top attractions in the Blue Mountains), you will miss out on all of the other incredible things to do in the Blue Mountain National Park.  However, if you don’t have any more time to spare a tour will whizz you around and get you back to Sydney quickly and easily.

These are some of the highest-rated Blue Mountains tours depending on what you want to include.

  • From Sydney: Blue Mountains Full-Day Trip with Cruise : Includes a visit to Featherdale Wildlife Park, Echo Point, three rides at Scenic World and a cruise on the Parramatta River to Circular Quay in Sydney.  There are various other tours with very similar itineraries to choose from, but this one has the most positive reviews.

From Sydney: Blue Mountains, Scenic World All-Inclusive Tour : Another highly rated and popular tour which is a small, all-inclusive tour to the Blue Mountains on a day trip from Sydney with a guide. The tour includes a visit to Scenic World, the Three Sisters, Wildlife Park or zoo, lunch and a ferry cruise all in one day.

  • From Sydney: Blue Mountains Nature and Wildlife Tour : Includes a visit to Featherdale Wildlife Park, Echo Point, and a guided bushwalk in the Blue Mountains to see a waterfall and lookout point instead of the rides at Scenic World.

From Sydney: Blue Mountains Aboriginal Experience Day Tour : This unique Blue Mountains Tour allows you to discover the cultural roots of Australia’s First Nation People on an Aboriginal Tour. The expert Aboriginal guide will share local mythology and enlighten you on native bush foods and medicines during a 2-hour Catherine’s Walk through the Blue Mountains National Park.

Blue Mountains Day Trip by Train

If you are backpacking Australia on a budget or prefer to travel independently then getting to the Blue Mountains by train from Sydney is straightforward and cheap.  It is possible to do a day trip to the Blue Mountains by train, but it will mean a very early start (which is totally worth it!) and a late return back to Sydney, so spending more time here is better if you can.

How to Get to the Blue Mountains by Train from Sydney

When travelling independently, the best way to get to the Blue Mountains from Sydney is by train.  The Sydney to Blue Mountains Trains run regularly on the BMT Blue Mountains Trainline from Sydney Central Station and take around two hours to Katoomba.

The trains are double-decker, with a few seats on the same level as you walk through the door, then with steps up and down to get to the main seating areas on the top or bottom level.  The trains I took were clean and safe, and excellent value.

I loved the public transport system in Sydney, as you can just use a contactless credit card to swipe as you go onto the train platform and swipe off again as you get off the train.  You can also buy an individual single ticket (which costs a bit more) or swipe on and off using an Opal Card which you might have if you’re spending a long time in Sydney.

The journey from Sydney to the Blue Mountains by train works like this too, you can just use a contactless credit card to swipe on and off the train and that will calculate the cost of your trip and deduct it from your bank account automatically.  Just make sure you remember to swipe off when you get off the train otherwise you’ll be charged the maximum possible fare for your trip!

Visiting the Blue Mountains by train is a cheap and eco-friendly way to travel, with tickets costing less than $10 each way.  Services arrive or depart from Central Station platforms 1 to 15.  Currently, the first train from Sydney to Blue Mountains destinations leaves at 4.22am and is due to arrive in Katoomba 2 hours later at 6.22am.  You can check the up-to-date Blue Mountains train timetable here .

When I visited there were maintenance works going on along the train line and replacement buses were used for part of the journey so it took longer than usual to get to and from Katoomba.  Plan your trip on the Transport NSW website here .

You can also use your Opal card or contactless card for the public buses in Katoomba, as well as the train.  This means that the train and buses in the Blue Mountains are included in the travel caps for the Opal card or contactless card payments for public transport in Sydney.

As of February 2024, During the week the travel cap is $17.80 a day for an adult, and if you travel at the weekend the travel cap is just $8.90 a day for an adult and $4.45 for a child.

So, you can take the train to the Blue Mountains then take all of the buses you want and it won’t cost you any more than $16.80 a day during the week or $8.90 per day at the weekend – bargain!

NB – If you are travelling directly to the Blue Mountains from Sydney Airport, the travel cap doesn’t apply for the journey from the airport as that is a more expensive route and charged differently.  I bought a single Opal card ticket for my trip from Sydney Airport to the Blue Mountains and it cost me $27.20.  I didn’t realise it at the time but just using my credit card to swipe on and off the train would have been cheaper.  Ah well!

Getting Around the Blue Mountains By Public Transport

If you come to the Blue Mountains by train on a day trip or for a longer stay and don’t have a car there are a few options for getting around the Blue Mountains on public transport by train, bus and the Hop on Hop off Bus service, as well as hiking along the many walking trails.

Blue Mountains Trains from Town to Town

Once you arrive at your chosen destination, you can also take the train between the towns in the Blue Mountains.  Some stations are very convenient, like Katoomba and Leura stations, which are close to the main streets.  Others such as Wentworth Falls are further away from the town and attractions, so you might find the buses to be more suitable.

The buses also run more frequently, usually every 30 minutes or so whereas the train service is generally one per hour, so factor that into your planning too.

Public Buses in Katoomba

Public buses can take you almost everywhere you’ll need to go, and you just use your contactless credit card to swipe on and off the buses.  As I mentioned earlier there are transport price caps in place throughout the Greater Sydney area, and buses in the Blue Mountains are included in that.

You can check the Blue Mountains bus routes here , some popular routes include:

The 686 bus which goes from Katoomba to Scenic World via Echo Point (Loop Service) – check the timetable here

695   Katoomba to South Leura (Loop Service) – check the timetable here

685   Katoomba to North Wentworth Falls (Loop Service) – check the timetable here .

There is also a taxi service in Katoomba too (Katoomba Taxis: 02 4782 1311) if you do get stuck!

Blue Mountains Explorer Bus Hop on Hop off

The Blue Mountains Explorer Hop on Hop off bus ticket is decent value if you’re staying for a few days.  The ticket is usually valid for one day but you can extend it to cover the duration of your stay for free if you ask at the ticket office.

Children also ride for free when travelling with an adult so it’s a great option if you’re visiting the Blue Mountains with kids.  Make sure you sit at the top on the left-hand side of the bus for the best views during the route.

I’d recommend booking your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment – the prices are the same on GetYourGuide as they are on the official website, but booking through GYG means I will get a small commission at no extra cost to you which helps me to maintain this website and keep content free for you!

The ticket doubles as a guidebook with suggestions and directions for walks at many of the stops.  Tickets also include live commentary from the bus drivers as you trundle around the Blue Mountains, and there are some discounts available at selected local attractions, hotels and cafes too.

Blue Mountains Hop on Hop Off Tickets

Prices start from $29 AUD per adult, for a one hour sightseeing tour without getting off the bus, or $49 AUD for a full day hop on hop off bus ticket, which you can extend for free to use throughout your stay.  I got the full-day pass >>>CHECK DETAILS HERE

The downside is that the first bus leaves Katoomba station at 9am, and runs on the hour until the last bus leaves at 4pm, so you need to time your days carefully to make the most of the buses and avoid getting stranded!  To make the most of the pass make sure you’re in Katoomba before 9am ready for the first bus.

If you do miss the last bus in most cases you can hop on a local bus which run a bit later, but check to make sure they are available when and where you want them – Google maps is pretty accurate when it comes to that, or see the timetables I’ve linked to above.

Combined Scenic World and Hop on Hop Off Bus Ticket

If you plan to visit Scenic World you can also get a combined ticket to include the Blue Mountains Explorer Hop on Hop Off Bus and and entry ticket to Scenic World. >>>CHECK DETAILS & PRICES

Where to Stay in the Blue Mountains

I know you might have come here looking for information about a day trip to the Blue Mountains but I will say again that it really is worth spending the night here to explore more of this beautiful area.

There are some great places to stay in the Blue Mountains, and I recommend staying in Katoomba, as that is a central place to base yourself, close to the major attractions in the Blue Mountains.  Katoomba is a nice little town with lots of shops and restaurants and an excellent selection of street art too!

The train from Sydney to Katoomba takes around 2 hours and Katoomba is a good transport hub with regular buses and trains to other Blue Mountains destinations, as well as the Blue Mountains Hop On Hop Off Bus.

Unique Blue Mountains Accommodation

No. 14 lovel st.

I stayed at No. 14 Lovel St which is a lovely eco-friendly guesthouse in Katoomba with a mix of private rooms and shared dorms.  It is a great choice if you are looking for unique accommodation in the Blue Mountains or are visiting the Blue Mountains on a budget – I loved my stay here and definitely recommend it.  Keep an eye open for my full review coming soon!

No. 14 Lovel St was first built in 1913 and still has some original features, and is painted bright yellow to welcome you home with a smile on your face!  It’s about 10 minutes’ walk from Katoomba train station, located at number 14 Lovel Street in case you hadn’t guessed!

There is a fully equipped kitchen (including oven and pizza trays), a group dining area with sofas, a cosy library, and a terrace for chilling out and getting to know fellow guests.  You can choose to book a dorm bed, a private room or even the whole house for a fabulous stay in the Blue Mountains.

No. 14 is run by Annette and Gavin, who I met at a hostel conference back in 2019, and they invited me to stay for a few days and made me feel right at home.  From chatting with other guests I wasn’t the only one getting the “family” treatment, as Annette would offer to drive people to the train station or into town, as well as sharing her wealth of knowledge about the area.

Annette clearly knows her stuff, so much so that she actually wrote a book about the Blue Mountains called OUT OF THE BLUE , which you can buy at the guesthouse, online or at various outlets around the Blue Mountains to properly prepare for your Blue Mountains trip.

Blue Mountains Hotels

If you prefer a little more luxury you might prefer to stay at one of these hotels in Katoomba:

If you like classic hotels, The Carrington is a heritage-listed refurbished manor offering elegant rooms and old-style glamour in the lounge.  Breakfast is included in the rate and you have lots of places to eat in Katoomba to choose from for your other meals as well as the bar and restaurant on-site.

Lilianfels Blue Mountains Resort & Spa

Lilianfels Blue Mountains Resort & Spa is a grand country house just a few minutes’ walk from the Three Sisters viewpoint at Echo Point.  There is a spa on-site (reservations recommended) so you can have some R&R after a long day hiking!  It’s a 25-minute walk from the station so I’d advise a bus or taxi journey to and from the hotel.

The Best Things to Do in the Blue Mountains

Now to convince you to spend longer than a day in the Blue Mountains!  As I mentioned earlier there are so many fabulous activities and attractions in the Blue Mountains that you could stay here for a week and still not do everything.  Here is my pick of the top things to do in the Blue Mountains for you to choose from:

Scenic World

The top attraction in the Blue Mountains is Scenic World. All of the day tours to the Blue Mountains come here and it’s definitely worth a visit BUT it gets very busy, so you’ll want to get here as soon as it opens to beat the crowds and so you can be first on all the rides!

The Unlimited Discovery Pass day ticket to Scenic World includes as many times on the rides as you like that day, so take your time and make the most of it, especially if you are spending a weekend or several days in the Blue Mountains.

Prices start from $50 AUD per adult, with child tickets starting from $30 (kids under 3 go free).  Entry times vary from 9am to 10am, with closing times between 4p, amd 5pm.

BUY YOUR TICKETS ONLINE

I suggest buying your ticket online , either individually from Scenic World or as part of your Hop on Hop Off Bus Pass.

This means you can catch the first Blue Mountains Hop On Hop Off Explorer Bus at 9am (or taking a public bus) to get there as close as you can to opening time at 9am or 10am depending on that day’s opening times.  If it opens at 10am then you could go to the Three Sisters first although it might start to get busy by the time you arrive here.

Whenever you do arrive, jump off the bus at Skyway East Station where you can take the Skyway cable car across the Valley to the main entrance and pick up your Scenic World wristband.

Take a peek through the glass floor of the Skyway and get incredible views of Katoomba Falls and Mount Solitary as you cross the valley.

Once officially inside Scenic World, head over to the Blue Mountains Scenic Railway to go down into the valley on the steepest railway in the world (which is more like a roller-coaster than a train!)  Getting here early gives you a good chance to bag the front seat like we did, or wait a while to choose your favourite spot.

Down in the valley take a walk around the wooden pathways, learning about the mining history here – and spot dinosaurs along the way.  I think the dinosaurs are a temporary exhibit but there is usually something to keep kids of all ages entertained.

We took the cableway back up which seemed to be what everyone else did too so that was quite busy, then we stayed on to go back down into the valley and get a better spot by the window, and took the scenic train back up – again getting a seat at the front!

It was getting busy by this time but I was so glad to have had a whole morning here to get the best out of everything.  Keep an eye on the time so you can be back at the bus stop either for the 11.17 am or 12.17 pm Hop on Hop Off Bus depending on how long you spend here.  Alternatively, if you finish before that check the public bus timetables.

Scenic World has also recently launched Indigenous Experiences where you can discover Gundungurra Country with an indigenous guide and learn more about the culture of the people who lived here long before white settlers arrived.  Tickets for this special tour are limited and include all Scenic World rides and time to enjoy the rest of the park after your tour.   >>>CHECK DETAILS AND PRICES

Echo Point Lookout & The Three Sisters

The Three Sisters is a striking rock formation, made up of three stone towers standing in a row on the tip of a cliff and is probably the most famous place in the Blue Mountains along with Scenic World.

If you’re taking the Hop On Hop Off bus, the first bus is at 9am from Katoomba and I’d recommend either getting off at stop 6 (Honeymoon Lookout) and following part of the Prince Henry Cliff Walk path to the Three Sisters and Echo Point Lookout, or just going straight to Echo Point to see the Three Sisters as that’s the most popular stop.

Alternatively, if you visit Scenic World first, take the bus around the loop from Scenic World to get you back here.

There are several viewpoints here to enjoy the beautiful scenery as you look out onto Jamison Valley.  Queen Elizabeth Lookout just underneath Echo Point was my favourite, but follow the trails and see where they take you.

If you’re feeling energetic you can descend the Giant Stairway but as its name suggests there are A LOT of stairs to head down into the valley.

Hiking in the Bue Mountains

There are some fantastic hikes in the Blue Mountains, taking in clifftop trails, walking through the Jamison Valley or exploring waterfalls and lookouts.  If you are into hiking then you are spoilt for choice here!

There are Blue Mountains walking trails suitable for all ages abilities, from flat paved boardwalks to beautiful viewpoints, to steep steps into and back out of the valley.  My knees couldn’t handle heading down into the valley on foot, but if you have some major hiking in mind then you’ll need to allocate more time to hiking and less to exploring – or spend even longer here!

Some of the hikes take less than an hour, whereas others can take all day depending on your fitness levels and stamina.  If you set out to do some hiking and head down into the valley, if you can’t face the walk back up the steps then you could buy a ticket for Scenic World to transport you back up!

TOP TIP: Before you head out on any hikes, check to make sure the trails and Blue Mountains lookouts you want to visit are open – with the fires and floods over the best couple of years some trails are sadly closed until they can be made safe again.

Katoomba Falls & Katoomba Cascades

One of my favourite easy walks in the Blue Mountains was an accessible pathway to Katoomba Cascades and the viewpoints to see Katoomba Falls and Orphan Rock.  You can get here either by walking along the Prince Henry Cliff Walk from Scenic World or Echo Point, or hop off the bus at Cliff Road Lookout and walk there from the road.

From the Cliff Road Lookout, follow the path to the Cascades.  Here you can get a close up view of the waterfall as it tumbles down the rocks.  There are stepping stones to get across the water, or a bridge if you’re not feeling brave enough!

Follow the pathway alongside Kedumba Creek to a selection of Lookouts, including the Duke and Duchess of York Lookout and the Watchtower Lookout where you have great views of the valley and the Skyway Cable Car, and to Katoomba Falls Lookout for a lovely view of Katoomba Falls as it tumbles into the valley.

The pathway and Katoomba Cascades are also lit up for evening walks so you can watch the sunset from the lookouts and walk back after dark, something you definitely can’t do on a Blue Mountains day trip!  I loved walking along the path among the greenery, and the view from the Katoomba Falls Lookout as the sun set and the Sulphur Crested Cockatoos squawked below us before coming in to roost.

Join a Jewellery Making Class

Did you know you can also take a jewellery-making workshop in the Blue Mountains?  I joined Fran at Ladybird Design Creative to make some gorgeous silver earrings which I am so proud of!  I loved the whole process, from designing what the earrings would look like to cutting and shaping the silver and adding a flourish of coloured beads.

Fran offers various creative workshops from silver jewellery (earrings, a ring or pendant) and sip and paint classes, to making beeswax wraps in her home and studio in Wentworth Falls.  Check the website for private classes or to see what workshops she has running while you’re in town.

Explore Street Art in Katoomba

Katoomba has a lot of street art to explore on Beverly Place and around the Cultural Centre, as well as a gorgeous mural in the tunnel under the train line.

Beverly Place is home to the Katoomba Street Art Walk, which makes use of the back side of buildings which would normally be quite an ugly area and turns it into something dynamic and beautiful, with all sorts of graffiti designs and murals.

Be sure to take a walk around The Gully, which used to be an Aboriginal settlement before the people were evicted and their homes destroyed to make way for a race track.  It has now been officially recognised as an Aboriginal Place where you can take an Interpretive Walk and learn about the people who used to live there.

The Gully is about 10 minutes’ walk from central Katoomba and is a nice break if you want some peace and quiet.

Birdwatching in the Blue Mountains

One of my favourite things about hiking and being in nature is spotting the wildlife in the area.  The birds in Australia are so different to the ones I know from the UK, so seeing even common Australian birds was fascinating for me.

The Blue Mountains is home to the lyrebird, which is known for its ability to mimic sounds and for the male’s impressively long tail plumage.  I think I may have spotted a female but the closest I got to a male was hearing noises around me and spotting this statue!

I did however see plenty of white sulphur-crested cockatoos, and a black cockatoo, as well as a bright red and blue Crimson Rosella, and some pink Galahs.  You might also see a wedge-tailed eagle and a variety of other birds as you explore – don’t forget to bring some binoculars if you are keen to spot everything you can!

Stargazing

One of the best things to do in the Blue Mountains at night is to gaze up at the stars.  I was hoping to do this on my last day in the Blue Mountains but sadly the weather ruined that plan, it was too cloudy and rainy to see anything so the tour was cancelled.

Of course, on a clear night you can look up and see the beautiful night sky, but with a star gazing tour like this one you’ll also have access to a professional-grade telescope and someone to explain just what you’re looking at!  You can book a star gazing tour online, the meeting point is at Wentworth Falls so you’ll need to arrange a taxi to get there and back.

Visiting The Quaint Towns in the Blue Mountains

Leura is a lovely little town with quirky shops and more great Blue Mountains restaurants and cafes.  There are antique and second-hand shops as well as unique stores like Bilingarra – Indigenous Art and Culture, which is well worth a visit for a special souvenir of your time in the Blue Mountains.  They sell a variety of art and handmade items from Aboriginal artists and craftspeople.

If you want to grab some food on the go to eat later, Leura Gourmet is a fabulous deli with some meal options to take away such as spinach and filo pie and tiramisu.

If you prefer to sit down and eat, I loved Leura Dumplings (next door to Josophan’s Fine Chocolates which sells incredible brownies and chocolates), or how about afternoon tea in a teapot museum at Bygone Beautys ?

If you can’t stretch to a full afternoon tea, at least treat yourself to a buy-one-get-one-free cream tea, with a serving of two delicious scones, jam and cream and a hot drink, if you have a voucher from the Hop On Hop Off Bus or Annette’s “OUT OF THE BLUE” book.

As well as the street art in Katoomba, it is worth wandering around the town, browsing in the shops and getting something to eat.  There are a couple of supermarkets here to stock up if you want to cook something yourself, or there are some excellent restaurants in Katoomba to choose from too.

For lunch I had a delicious falafel wrap from Cedar Take Away , and you can’t go wrong with a pizza from Station Bar and Woodfired Pizza .  Their delicious pizzas have some unique toppings like saltwater crocodile or roast duck, alongside classic favourites with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options available.

If you fancy a drink in the evening you could head to the classic Carrington Hotel for a glass of bubbly in front of the open fire (on a cold day that is delightful!) or have a cocktail or two at Bootlegger Bar, which has a rooftop bar and live music at the weekends.

Other Fun Things to Do in the Blue Mountains

Trust me when I say there is something for everyone here.  While the Blue Mountains is known for hiking and lookout points, you certainly won’t get bored here – even if you don’t want to hike at all!

If you’re feeling adventurous you could try out some of the following Blue Mountains activities that I didn’t have chance to try!

  • Abseiling or Canyoning Experience

Blue Mountains 3 Hour Army Truck Adventure

Mountain e-Bike Ride to Hanging Rock

  • Blue Mountains 1-Hour Trike Tour of Three Sisters

See what I mean?  There are just too many fabulous things to do in the Blue Mountains to fit into two or three days, let alone a single day trip!  I hope this article has persuaded you to not just take a day trip to the Blue Mountains and has given you some ideas to plan your own Blue Mountains itinerary by train.

While some places are definitely easier to visit if you have a car, visiting the Blue Mountains by train is a great way to explore the area in an eco-friendly and budget-friendly way!

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

1 April (next Monday) is nicknamed National Price Hike Day, as it's when government bodies and private companies traditionally increase the cost of goods and services ahead of the new financial year.

So what can we expect this year?

TV and broadband

BT, EE, Plusnet and Vodafone customers will be charged 7.9% more from April. These companies pin their prices to December's inflation figure plus 3.9%, which is common practice in the industry.

Virgin Media and O2, which merged in 2021, are upping prices by 8.8%, as they use the retail price index from January plus 3.9%. There are caveats which mean some O2 customers will see prices rise by less than this.

Sky is also implementing price rises, meaning most Sky TV and broadband customers will pay an average of 6.7% more from 1 April.

Council tax

Most people who live in councils with responsibility for social care in England will see their bills rise by the maximum of 4.99%.

In areas where the councils don't oversee social care, the rise for most will be 2.99%.

Birmingham City Council, which has declared effective bankruptcy, has been given permission to hike council tax by 21% over two years due to a black hole caused partly by equal pay claims and a botched IT systems rollout.

Council tax has been frozen by the devolved government in Scotland, while rises in Wales range anywhere from 3% to 21%. Northern Ireland uses a rating system instead of council tax, and rises are also expected here.

The annual cost of a standard colour TV licence will rise to £169.50 from 1 April - an increase of £10.50 on the current price of £159 a year.

Rent for social housing

The CPI rate of inflation in September - 6.7% - is used to determine the yearly rise in rents.

For 2024-25, the limit will be 6.7% plus an additional 1%.

The average household water and sewerage bill in England and Wales will go up by an average of 6% from April .

Water UK said the increases would leave households with an average annual bill of £473.

Vehicle excise duty will rise on all but the cleanest new and used cars in April.

Increases are generally calculated in line with the RPI rate of inflation and are expected to be about 6%.

Train fares

Rail fares will rise by 8.7% in April for those in Scotland, after the Scottish government argued previous fare freezes were not sustainable.

For those in England and Wales, fares rose by 4.9% on 3 March.

The Royal Mail will raise the price of stamps again as the company struggles with a decline in the number of letters being posted.

The price of a first class and second class stamp will increase by 10p to £1.35 and 85p respectively from 2 April.

It's not all bad news in April

National insurance

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced in the budget earlier this month that the starting rate for NI will change from 10% to 8% from 6 April.

This will benefit 27 million workers, he said, and is worth about £450 a year to an employee on an average salary of £35,000.

NI for two million self-employed workers is also being cut.

Their rate will fall from 8% to 6%. The government says that is worth £350 to a self-employed person earning £28,200.

Child benefit

The amount people can earn before child benefit is reduced or taken away is increasing.

At the moment, people lose 1% of the benefit for every £100 they earn over £50,000. At £60,000, the benefit is cut completely.

From April, the benefit won't be reduced until one parent earns more than £60,000. And it will only go completely at £80,000.

Benefits and tax credits that are linked to inflation will rise by 6.7% in April.

That was the level CPI in September.

For joint claimants over the age of 25, universal credit standard allowances will rise from £578.82 to £617.60 per month.

The basic and new state pension will rise by 8.5% in April - to £11,502 a year.

The new state pension is for those reaching state pension age on or after 6 April 2016. It will rise to £221.20 a week - up from £203.85.

Minimum wage

The National Minimum Wage for those 21 and over will rise to £11.44 - an increase of £1.02, or 9.8%.

There are larger percentage increases for younger age groups -as well as a 21.2% rise for apprentices (going up to £6.40).

Energy price cap

From 1 April to 30 June this year the price paid by a typical household that uses electricity and gas will go down to £1,690 a year.

This is £238 a year lower than the price cap between 1 January and 31 March this year.

For the first time, COVID-19 jabs will be available on the high street.

Boots has become the first major pharmacy to launch a private vaccination service, with at least 50 stores offering the single-dose Pfizer vaccine.

The shot will be available from 1 April for anyone aged 12 or over - but there's a hefty price tag.

The vaccine will be priced at £98.95.

Boots has said it is working to make the vaccine more affordable, but the COVID jabs are more expensive to produce than others.

Some people are still eligible to get a booster vaccine for free on the NHS - including those over 65 or with weakened immune systems due to conditions such as cancer.

The discount supermarket has said it plans to increase its animal welfare standards by allowing more space for its chickens to roam.

Chickens used in its own-label products will have 20% more space than the industry standard, with a maximum density of 30kg per square metre, Lidl said.

The transition will start this summer and should finish by early next year.

The move will provide chickens with more space to roam, which Lidl said "enables them to engage in natural behaviours like stretching their wings, dust bathing and exploring, bolstering both physical and psychological well-being, leading to more fulfilling lives".

Lidl GB chief commercial officer Richard Bourns said: "Animal welfare is a priority for us, and we are dedicated to ensuring all animals within our supply chain lead good lives."

The supermarket was previously criticised by campaign group The Humane League UK, which said it was "very resistant" to making changes on animal welfare.

It had called on Lidl and other supermarkets to sign the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC) - a welfare policy requiring the use of slower-growing breeds, more space, natural light and enrichment, less painful slaughter methods and third-party auditing.

Partners Ocado and M&S appear to have been involved in a tussle for some weeks, but the former has now insisted they are "absolutely aligned".

The retailers have been in a dispute after M&S put its final payment for the joint venture on hold, saying the online grocer partnership had failed to meet key performance targets.

M&S was due to pay £190.7m by August, dependent on the venture's performance against an undisclosed target in the year to November 2023.

Last month, Ocado Group chief executive Tim Steiner said he believed M&S owed a "substantial amount of money" and if a settlement was not agreed it could pursue litigation.

However, Ocado Retail chief executive Hannah Gibson has now insisted conversations are ongoing and it is not impacting day-to-day operations.

Ms Gibson claimed both companies were "working really closely operationally together".

"They were in a board meeting and there were positive conversations and relationships going on focused on what we're doing now to grow and improve the business," she said.

"I think we're all absolutely aligned."

Nearly four million smart meters across Great Britain are not working properly , government figures show.

While some 2.7 million meters were not operating in smart mode as of June 2023, that figure increased to 3.98 million by the end of last year, according to data from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).

Fundraisers doing door-to-door collections for charities will be monitored more closely , the Fundraising Regulator has said.

News reports found recruits were being taught pressure-selling tactics, despite the Code of Fundraising Practice warning against putting "undue pressure" on people.

Charities must monitor subcontracting firms carrying out fundraising on their behalf more closely and must ensure fundraisers are given appropriate training.

ITV racked up millions of pounds in legal costs last year as it dealt with the fallout of the Phillip Schofield scandal , according to a report.

The broadcaster paid £24m in legal fees in 2023, some of which were related to a KC review into Schofield's affair with a young colleague.

The presenter of This Morning stepped down in May last year, saying his relationship with the studio runner was "unwise, but not illegal".

ITV was cleared of wrongdoing and has denied it paid a settlement to Schofield or his younger colleague.

Dragons' Den star Theo Paphitis has called on the government to close a tax loophole used by fast fashion giants such as Temu and Shein.

He argued companies are avoiding customs bills in the UK by shipping individual orders directly from countries like China, rather than shipping in bulk to fulfilment centres.

A UK rule means shipments worth less than £135 are exempt from import duties.

Basically, a recession is the decline of a country's gross domestic product (GDP).

It's worth explaining a bit more about what GDP is before we get in-depth on recession.

Gross domestic product is the world's most closely watched economic indicator. It measures how much is produced, how much is spent and how much is earned in an economy over a certain period of time.

When GDP goes up, the economy is considered to be doing well.

When it goes down - negative growth or economic contraction - it's not doing well.

The most commonly used definition of a recession is when GDP falls for at least two successive three-month periods, or "quarters".

The Office for National Statistics says the "two quarters" rule has the potential to be misleading, however, as there are other factors that might mean GDP falls for six months that won't mean an economy is in recession.

But it's widely used - including by the Bank of England - as a rule of thumb.

Recessions are temporary and part of the economic cycle. If an economic downturn is particularly severe or lasts for a long period of time, it's known as a depression.

Why do some people talk about a 'technical recession'?

You may have heard economists, journalists or statisticians use this phrase before.

As we've said above, in the UK a recession is defined as two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth regardless of how deep, wide-ranging and long an economic downturn is.

Some will use the phrase "technical recession" to identify that they're applying this prescriptive definition of a recession, compared to, say, the US where the National Bureau of Economic Research will consider a broader range of economic indicators, such as unemployment, job vacancies and wage data, before declaring whether the economy is in recession.

What causes a recession?

It's difficult to determine exactly what causes a recession, as a number of factors can be at play.

They can be triggered by rising interest rates, economic shocks such as that experienced during the COVID pandemic, excess debt in the housing market (2008 crisis) and oversupply of goods and services - among many other things.

What happens during a recession and how would it affect me?

During a recession there's less money circulating, which can mean job losses, pay cuts, recruitment freezes and businesses shutting up shop.

Getting a mortgage or loan during a recession will prove hard as banks tighten their lending criteria.

It is also likely a recession will not be felt equally across society, with those on benefits, in precarious work or without savings faring worse.

Are we in a recession now?

Figures released by the ONS last month showed the UK slipped into a recession at the end of 2023.

But the economy is set to grow more than expected in 2024, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility - the country's fiscal watchdog - which is also expecting better economic growth in 2025 than previously forecast.

Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England, also hinted in February that the recession may "already be over". He told a committee of MPs he believed the downturn would be one of the most shallow recession events of modern times.

Prosecutions for low level offences such as speeding, truancy and TV licence fee non-payments are usually dealt with behind-closed-doors by the Single Justice Procedure (SJP).

It's designed to keep the court system efficient and minimise delays to more serious cases in the magistrates' courts.

But the Magistrates' Association has intervened to call for a reform of the SJP system, saying "flaws" in the system mean magistrates do not have enough time to consider cases and that it is harming "some of society's most vulnerable people".

The association is urging the Ministry of Justice to carry out a 12-point plan, including allowing prosecutors to see all pleas and mitigations beforehand, and letting the sittings be observed by journalists.

Up to 40,000 SJP cases are currently decided in private each month.

News reports say cases prosecuted by the SJP include a 78-year-old with dementia fined for not having car insurance while she was in a care home, a 33-year-old given a £781 legal bill after accidentally failing to pay £4 to the DVLA, and an 85-year-old woman prosecuted for not paying car insurance after suffering a broken neck and being admitted to a care home.

A black Uber Eats courier has been given a payout to end a legal claim in which he alleged he was unfairly blocked from work because the company's facial recognition app was racist.

Pa Manjang had his courier account suspended after being told security selfie checks he provided had "continued mismatches".

Couriers need to provide the photo checks at the start of their shifts, but Mr Manjang said he had been asked to take pictures of himself "multiple times a day" because the AI software failed to recognise him.

He told Uber Eats: "Your algorithm, by the looks of things, is racist."

The food delivery app has said its verification process also involves human reviewers.

Mr Manjang was backed by the Equality and Human Rights Commission and the App Drivers and Couriers Union, who funded his case.

Both said they were concerned by the use of AI in this instance, "particularly how it could be used to permanently suspend a driver's access to the app, depriving them of an income".

Uber Eats has made a settlement in the case, but reports suggest it accepts no liability.

The company said in a statement to Sky News that the real-time ID check "was not the reason for Mr Manjang's brief loss of access to his courier account".

"Our Real Time ID check is designed to help keep everyone who uses our app safe, and includes robust human review to make sure that we're not making decisions about someone's livelihood in a vacuum, without oversight," it said.

The possibility of a new record high being reached by the most valuable companies of the Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) 100 has ebbed away.

The index is down slightly (0.06%) this morning, no longer within touching distance of the all-time high in the combined value of the FTSE 100 companies recorded in February last year, as the rally that came late last week receded.

The news that Asos sales fell 18% in the six months to March did nothing to dent the share price - it was up 7.6% but comes after a fall of 90% across the last three years.

Performing well this morning is gambling giant Flutter, the owner of Paddy Power and Betfair brands. Today it announced it is moving its primary stock exchange listing to New York on 31 May, a blow to London. But it also recorded revenue growth of 17.3% in the UK and Ireland as it said its market share grew in the countries.

Oil prices have fallen from the $87 a barrel cost of Monday and now the benchmark Brent crude oil costs $86.8.

A pound buys $1.2647 and €1.1659.

Chocolate is among the products placing upwards pressure on grocery inflation in the run-up to Easter, according to closely watched supermarket data.

Kantar Worldpanel, which tracks pricing and market share, reported a further slowing in the pace of price growth across the sector over the four weeks to 17 March.

It said the annual rate for grocery inflation eased to 4.5% - down from the 5.3% figure recorded the previous month.

The report credited price matching guarantees across the industry, as shoppers continue to seek out value amid the wider cost of living crisis that is continuing to damage household spending power despite wage growth firmly outstripping the rate of inflation.

Kantar reported that prices were rising fastest in markets such as sugar confectionery and chocolate confectionery.

Global cocoa prices have nearly doubled so far this year. Heavy rains in West Africa, where most of the world's cocoa is grown, have hit production.

Things falling fastest include butter, milk and toilet tissues, it found.
