Elden Ring New Game Plus explained: How to begin Journey 2 and what carries over

New Game Plus is back in Elden Ring, letting you begin another journey into The Lands Between. Here's how it works.

New Game Plus in Elden Ring continues the FromSoftware and Soulsborne tradition, giving you a chance to take a different path and uncover secrets you might have missed the first time around. This game might be absolutely massive, but the end of your journey is ultimately just the beginning - as like the ring, you can continue forever, in an endless, circular cycle... if you wish.

In each of the games that make up this connected-but-not Soulsborne universe, New Game Plus has always taken a slightly different form. It’s quite simple in Elden Ring, but it’s going to be interesting to see what people discover as they begin to explore their second, third, or further journeys into The Lands Between.

A couple of us have completed the game, however - so here’s what we’ve learned about Elden Ring's NG+ so far…

How does Elden Ring’s New Game Plus work?

In Elden Ring, each game is known as a ‘journey’ , which means rather than being called ‘New Game Plus’ , the act of starting over is referred to as starting ‘Journey 2’.

As you’d expect, New Game Plus unlocks once you defeat the final bosses and reach one of the Elden Ring endings - of which there appear to be three major versions, with different permutations of each. At that point, you’ll be asked if you want to Begin Journey 2 right away.

If you choose to, New Game Plus kicks off right away. If you don’t, you’ll be returned to Roundtable Hold in an end-game state.

The world will be as it was right before you entered the final boss chambers. You can go off into the open world and do anything you want at this stage. You can visit dungeons, defeat optional bosses, and even take on any NPC side quests still available that late in the game. Anything you do will help contribute to your Journey 2 starting state. You can use this state to upgrade weapons and spirit ashes, level up, acquire armor and other gear, complete dungeons, and find new in-game locations.

One thing you can’t do in this state is repeat the game’s final battles and/or pursue a different ending - the path to the end of the game will be locked off permanently in that journey once you’ve seen one ending. The only way to take a different path is to Begin Journey 2, aka New Game Plus, and pursue your preferred storyline there.

journey 2 elden ring reddit

To do that, just head to Roundtable Hold and rest at the Table of Lost Grace in the middle of the Hold’s central chamber. As you know, this functions as a standard Site of Grace, but after you’ve defeated the final boss, you can head here to trigger New Game Plus at any time with the Begin Journey 2 button that appears there.

That option is only at this specific site of grace, and is designed solely to boot you into New Game Plus. Once you hit that button, there's no going back - your game will be reset. You do carry a bunch of stuff over, though.

What carries over to New Game Plus in Elden Ring

Once you start New Game Plus, you’ll be placed into the world of Elden Ring anew. Enemies will be powered up, and give more Runes as a result. Basically, it’s the same game, turned up to eleven.

Some older Souls games made more changes - if that's the case here remains to be seen, but it doesn't appear there's any deep secrets left to be found in New Game Plus, at least in Elden Ring's launch state - it's just a chance to replay the story, tackle different quests, and get a different ending.

Heading into Journey 2 you’ll keep your level, gear (including ashes, weapons , sorceries & incantations , notes, cookbooks, memory stones, etcetera), consumable items, Flask power and uses, access to Torrent , and so on - so you’ll go into the play-through fully powered up.

In fact, the only major things you’ll lose will be Sites of Grace (which must be discovered again), Great Runes, and any keys or key items that might allow you to skip ahead and break progression. Doors opened by Stonesword Keys are also reset and closed again.

At that point, you’re set free in the world again to conquer The Lands Between once again. Same game… but different. But still same.

Elden Ring New Game+: What carries over into Journey 2 and beyond

By matthew liebl | mar 5, 2022.

Bandai Namco

So you’ve beaten Elden Ring. You’ve mended the Elden Ring and began the new age as Elden Lord. Or maybe you got one of the many alternative endings. Either way, your first journey through The Lands Between has come to and end. So on what? New Game+ time!

Elden Ring Journey 2

As any Souls fan will tell you, multiple playthroughs are part of the core FromSoftware experience, and Elden Ring is no different. While this is typically referred to as New Game+, Elden Ring refers to these repeat playthroughs as a new “Journey.”

After beating the final boss in Elden Ring, you’ll be asked if you want to start Journey 2. This is basically new Game+.

You have the option to move ahead into Journey 2 and start from the beginning of the game again, or hold off and continue playing your current playthrough.

If you choose to wait and stay in your current game, you can acquire any Great Runes, weapons or armor you may have missed, defeat any leftover optional bosses, or complete any remaining quest chains. The only thing you can’t do is try for an alternative ending (this can only be done in a new Journey). If you choose to stay in your current Journey, you can visit the Roundtable Hold at any point to begin Journey 2 at any time.

Starting Journey 2: What carries over into New Game+

If you choose to begin Journey 2, you will start the game all over again on a higher difficulty; however, you have the added advantage of some items carrying over with you. When you begin Journey 2, the following will remain with you:

  • Your Weapons

Basically, you’re taking your character and all the weapons and items they have and playing the game all over again on a higher difficulty. The only items you can’t bring with you are Great Runes, story-specific keys and items that unlock shortcuts, and Stonesword Keys. All of your Sites of Grace will also reset and will need to be rediscovered.

Next. Elden Ring: Which starting class is best for you?. dark

You’ll notice that enemies will be a bit more tougher in your subsequent playthroughs by they will drop more Runes since you’ll need more to level up. There are a total of seven playthroughs in Elden Ring, so Journey 7 will be your last run.

Elden Ring: What You Need To Know About New Game Plus

Just like most other FromSoftware games, Elden Ring has a New Game Plus feature - here's what you need to know about Journey 2.

One of the few downsides to Elden Ring is that, at some point, the game has to end. It's somewhat sad to say goodbye to your first playthrough - the sense of adventure and exploration in Elden Ring is just unmatched the first time - but becoming Elden Lord doesn't necessarily mean the game is over.

After beating the final boss of Elden Ring players are offered a choice: start Journey 2, also called New Game Plus, or continue in the current iteration of the world. Remaining in the world lets players choose to start their second playthrough at the Roundtable Hold instead, but there are a lot of good reasons to continue into this enhanced version of the base game.

Enemy Health And Damage Is Significantly Boosted

Elden Ring New Game Plus Guide Grafted Scion Increased Health

The main difference between a regular playthrough and New Game Plus is in enemy strength. All enemies and bosses in Elden Ring get a buff to their overall Health pool and the amount of damage they can dish out. In New Game +7 even the Godrick Soldier in the tutorial area can take out the player.

In regular New Game Plus enemies are noticeably beefier than before, and each level of New Game Plus after increases Health and damage by a little bit more. Early-game zones will likely feel too easy for you, but that's kind of the point - by the time you've reached Level 150 at the end of the game, you can restart and choose a completely different path to the Erdtree . You only need two Great Runes to get to Leyndell, they don't necessarily have to be Godrick's and Rennala's.

Some Things Carry Over, Like Armaments, Gestures, and Stats...

Elden Ring New Game Plus Guide Roundtable Hold

Though it's technically a restart mechanic, starting Journey 2 in Elden Ring doesn't mean letting go of things you've collected. In fact, the majority of items collected during the first playthrough will stay with you to the second. It's part of the appeal of New Game Plus - it's a chance to experience the game from the start with more options. For example, you can fight Godrick with the Sacred Relic Sword or kill Patches in a single shot with the Jar Cannon.

RELATED: Elden Ring: How To Skip Stormveil Castle

In addition to all Armaments and Armor collected, New Game Plus lets players keep their collected Ashes of War, Spirit Ashes, Gestures, Upgrade Materials, Memory Stones and spells, Stonesword Keys, Talismans, the Flask of Wondrous Physick, Crystal Tears, and Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears carry over. Interestingly, the full unlocked map carries over to New Game Plus, too.

Of course, players also get to keep their Level and stat allocations when moving onto New Game Plus, though you won't be able to respec until Rennala is defeated again.

...But Some Things Don't, Like Great Runes, Prayerbooks, and Medallions

Elden Ring New Game Plus Guide Mending Rune No Carry Over

Not everything carries over to New Game Plus, mostly items that count as Key Items or are important for story progression. This means that medallion halves need to be re-collected, the Dung Eater's Seedbed Curses need to be found again, and all Great Runes need to be earned again too. If it's an important item that can be earned in a quest or is tied to unlocking new areas , chances are you can't bring it with you.

This also includes all Keys found in a playthrough, but there's more than just items that don't carry over. Bosses respawn, of course, but additionally all opened doors are closed, all Sites of Lost Grace must be found again, and all quests are reset to their beginning step. Be sure to complete all the NPC quests that are important to you in a single playthrough.

Runes Are Multiplied Differently According To Location

Elden Ring New Game Plus Guide Map

The amount of Runes you earn for defeating enemies is increased across the board in New Game Plus, but there are some things to keep in mind. Depending on the zone, and how far into the game players need to be to access it, Runes earned are multiplied differently.

RELATED: Elden Ring: Where To Find Patches The Untethered

Because players are so overleveled for Limgrave by the end of a normal playthrough , enemies and bosses in the zone reward about five times the number of Runes. However, in places like the Altus Plateau and Liurnia of the Lakes this increase is reduced to three times. Late-game zones like the Consecrated Snowfield and the Capital of Ash only see a 2x increase in Runes, but this still adds up to a lot when one considers how many Runes these enemies drop normally.

There Are No New Weapons, Enemies, Items, or Bosses In NG+

Elden Ring New Game Plus Guide No New Content

Unfortunately there are really no other major differences between New Game Plus and a regular playthrough of Elden Ring . Dark Souls required players to go to at least New Game +2 to get all achievements for the game, Dark Souls 2 changed enemy and item placements and added stronger items for players to discover , and Dark Souls 3 made all upgraded versions of rings only accessible in subsequent playthroughs.

All FromSoftware games have had some kind of New Game Plus mechanic, but it would be remiss to say that Elden Ring 's feels a bit lacking compared to other offerings in the past. It's still a worthy experience for all players to take on when looking for more challenge after beating the Elden Beast - but try going for a different ending or using a completely different build to make it more worthwhile.

Elden Ring is available now for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S.

Elden Ring: What Level Should You Be for New Game Plus?

Before going into journey 2, here is what you should do..

Elden Ring What Level Should You Be For New Game Plus?

Now as players are heading towards the endgame of Elden Ring , they’re thinking about where they want to take their next journey in the Lands Between. Explore more? Try new builds? Farm? New game plus? Here is how you can prepare for Journey 2, or New Game Plus, including what level you should be in Elden Ring .

What Level Should You Be for New Game Plus in Elden Ring

If you managed to defeat the final boss and reach an ending in the game, you are given the option to either start your next playthrough or keep going about. Honestly, your level does not matter too much in the grand scheme of things.

If you have defeated the final boss, you’re probably good enough to take on all the previous bosses you killed in your first playthrough, but with more health. Should you want an actual framework of what level you should be for NG+, you should at the minimum, be level 160 or higher and fulfill the following:

  • Have at least 3 normal weapons that are +20
  • Have at least 3 special weapons that are +8
  • Use all your remembrances
  • Max out your flask count (max Golden Seeds)
  • Max out amount replenished by flasks (max Sacred Tears)
  • Remember which ending you got
  • Buy and learn every sorcery/incantation
  • Pick up most of the Ashes of War
  • Remove the Fia debuff
  • Collect unique weapons
  • Collect all the map fragments
  • Interact with all Mausoleums and duplicate Remembrances
  • Pick up all or most of the Physick Mixes
  • Respec if you want to try a new build going into Journey 2
  • Collect the Gold Scarab for easier Rune farming

Of course, you are free to not follow or just loosely follow some of these recommendations going into New Game+. Levels only mean so much after a while in this game. At some point, leveling a stat will grant you diminishing returns.

Elden Ring is out now for the PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series S/X, and PC.

8 Things You Need to Do Before NG+ in Elden Ring

8 Things You Need to Do Before NG+ in Elden Ring

If you didn’t know, FromSoft games always add an optional playthrough option called NG+. This is starting the game all over again, but with some exceptions. The bosses and enemies are harder, but you can keep everything you found in the previous playthrough.

The most important thing is to collect and explore as much as possible before NG+. We will review the specific things you should do on this list, but you must be prepared for anything once you enter Journey 2. Keep in mind that there are a bunch of things that don’t carry over.

Stuff like Bell Bearings, Great Runes, and story-related items don’t carry over to NG+, so make sure you know. It isn’t a big deal, but if you don’t know, it can annoy you once you start your new Journey. The best part is that your map stays uncovered in subsequent playthroughs, so you don’t need to find maps again.

1. Collect all Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones

journey 2 elden ring reddit

Collecting all the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones and its Somber versions is crucial if you want to try out new builds and get the maximum damage out of each one. You can find the Bell Bearings worldwide and purchase some from the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold.

Once you start your next run, you can level up any weapons you already have or found in your new playthrough. Ensure you have as many as possible, so you aren’t stuck with a +9 or even a +24 weapon later. Look up where to find them so you aren’t missing out on anything later.

2. Collect all Legendary items and weapons

Since you already have most of the map uncovered, you should try and find all these Legendary items. Below we put some information that will show you how many Legendary items there are and how to get each one. Each section also has its achievement, so make sure to find every single one of these if you are going for 100% achievement completion.

All Legendary Ashen Remains – 6 in total

  • Bolt of Gransax – Loot on the Giant spear in Leyndell

All Legendary Talismans – 8 in total

  • Marika’s Soreseal –  Found on an altar in a room requiring a Stonesword Key in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree
  • Old Lord’s Talisman –  Found in a chest in Crumbling Farum Azula
  • Erdtree’s Favor +2 – Found on a dead tree in Leyndell, Ashen Capital

All Legendary Sorceries and Incantations – 7 in total

journey 2 elden ring reddit

  • Flame of the Fell God – Dropped by Adan, Thief of Fire upon defeat
  • Greyoll’s Roar – Can be purchased at the Cathedral of Dragon Communion for three Dragon Hearts after defeating Greyoll
  • Elden Stars – Can be found near the Great Waterfall Crest Site of Grace
  • Founding Rain of Stars – Inside a chest within Heretical Rise, in Mountaintops of the Giants
  • Ranni’s Dark Moon – Found in a chest at the top of the tower at Chelona’s Rise
  • Comet Azur –   Acquired from Primeval Sorcerer Azur sitting near the cliffs in the northeast of Hermit Village in Mt. Gelmir
  • Stars of Ruin – Given by Master Lusat when interacted inside the Sellia Hideaway in Caelid

3. Do all Walking Mausoleums

If you haven’t seen a Walking Mausoleum, then you haven’t explored too much of the world. They are giant four-legged rock creatures with buildings on top of them. If you don’t know what they do, they allow you to duplicate Remembrances from already defeated bosses. If you want both, it lets you get the other item from a boss.

You could only choose 1 of the 2 items, but with these, you can duplicate it and get both. Or if you don’t want it, you get free Runes from them. Even if you don’t want the items, who doesn’t want some free Runes to give yourself a few upgrades? Try to get all the Walking Mausoleums, so you don’t miss out on some free items or Runes.

4. Finish NPC questlines

journey 2 elden ring reddit

NPC questlines are by far one of the best parts of this game. There are soo many, and it can be extremely hard to keep track of each one. Remember that almost everyone you meet in the game has a quest line. At the end of each questline, you usually get something really good, especially if the questline is very long.

One massive questline is the Ranni questline, which gives you the Dark Moon Greatsword and a different ending to the game if you do complete it. Try and complete all the questlines before you start a new playthrough because you most likely have a bunch you forgot about. Also, questlines give Legendary items, so don’t miss out on anything.

5. Find the Maps for every area

This is extremely important because all the Maps you have collected get pushed into NG+. Yes, every Map you collect, you get to keep. Once you start your new playthrough, you can see every place you have been if you have all the Maps . Your Site of Graces has been deactivated, but you can see everything you have explored already.

This is great because you won’t go into a cave you have already been in. All your markers also stay so you can keep track of anything in the world without worrying about not knowing where something is. Before starting a new playthrough, find all the Maps and mark all important locations, so you don’t forget anything.

6. Buy as many upgrade materials as you can

You should stock up on any materials you need in your next playthrough. You should also stock up on materials you don’t need because you might need them later. Try to upgrade everything you can in your base NG playthrough, but if you don’t know what to upgrade, just buy out all the stock at every shop.

Find all the Bell Bearings for Smithing Stones and buy as many as possible. Bell Bearings are one item that doesn’t get transferred into Journey 2. Just stock up on everything you can so you are prepared for anything in subsequent playthroughs.

7. Collect all Golden Seeds, Sacred Tears, Larval Tears, and Crystal Tears

journey 2 elden ring reddit

Your Flasks are the most useful tool because they allow you to heal and regain your FP. You need 30 Golden Seeds to upgrade your regular Flasks to +14 fully. If you don’t get them all, you can see them in later playthroughs, but plenty in the world can reach max Flasks within one playthrough.

Sacred Tears allow you to increase how much each Flask gives you there are only 12 Sacred Tears in the world, and they are all found in churches. You also want to stock up on Larval Tears, which allows you to reallocate your attributes once you defeat Renalla in the Academy of Ray Lucaria.

One last thing you need to stock up on is the Crystal Tears. These can be placed inside your Physick Flask and customized to your build. There are many of them, so try to find as many as you possibly can. Everyone helps, so try to find all of them before starting a new playthrough.

  • Golden Seeds – Allows the user to upgrade the number of Crimson and Cerulean Flask Uses to +14
  • Sacred Tears – Allows the user to upgrade the Crimson and Cerulean Flask Potency to +12
  • Larval Tears – Material needed by Rennala to grant rebirth (reallocate attributes)
  • Flask of Wonderous Physick – This special flask can be customized using Crystal Tears to produce significant effects but is only usable once per rest.

EXCLUSIVE: Elden Ring Director Answers All of Our Shadow of the Erdtree DLC Questions | IGN Fan Fest 2024 - IGN Image

Bandai Namco surprised fans all over this morning with the trailer for the hotly-anticipated follow up DLC for Elden Ring, Shadow of the Erdtree. I was fortunate to not only catch an early glimpse of the trailer , which also confirmed the DLC's release date for June 21, but also to sit down and talk with the man himself, Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Over the course of the interview we discuss the details of Shadow of the Erdtree, some of Elden Ring's bolder choices, his thoughts on potentially taking a step back from the director role in the future, and the state of the industry and how it relates to FromSoftware.

Read on for the full interview below, and make sure to check down our complete breakdown of the Shadow of the Erdtree trailer !

This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.

Can you set the stage for us with Shadow of the Erdtree? Where is it taking place? And can you speak kind of generally regarding what the story is going to be about?

Hidetaka Miyazaki, Director: First of all, the setting of Shadow of the Erdtree is a brand new land. It's a brand new map separate from the Lands Between. It is a land that is overshadowed by the particular Shadow of the Erdtree as opposed to the Erdtree in the Lands Between. And it takes place, again, on an entirely separate, physically separate map. So it will involve a warp of sorts to get there.

In terms of setting and themes, it technically occupies the same space as the Lands Between, the same universe. But due to something story related that we won't reveal today, this has become physically disconnected, and you'll travel to the Shadow of the Erdtree land as a separate place.

So this Land of Shadow itself is a place the player will visit to walk in the steps of Miquella. Miquella is a key part of the story this time , perhaps as guessed by many players who saw the art that was released previously. That is in fact Miquella, and it is he who traveled to the Land of Shadow and it's the players who will be tracing his path and following in his footsteps, trying to see what he's going to do there. Another axis of the story is Queen Marika and what she did in the Land of Shadow, and what led Miquella to follow her there.

Are you planning on playing Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree?

journey 2 elden ring reddit

Speaking of this new land that we're traveling to, how is it structured? Is it structured in very much the same way as the Lands Between, where there are legacy dungeons and minor dungeons? Can you describe a little bit about how the world is going to be compared to the base game?

Miyazaki: Yes. We think players can expect a similar experience to what they had with the base game. This is going to be structured in a similar way, as you said, with open field maps, with large scale legacy dungeons, and with small to medium scale legacies as well. So we hope players will enjoy this same sense of scale and sense of adventure throughout that structure.

Can you approximate the size of the world compared to the world in the base game?

Miyazaki: It's hard to answer without giving away too much and to a high degree of accuracy, but if you think in terms of scale or size, it's probably comparable, if not larger, than the area of Limgrave from the base game.

So, you mentioned Miquella earlier, and that's a character that I know fans have had a lot of questions about. Is there anything specifically you can tell us about the role this character will play in the DLC? And I know the trailer opens with a shot of Mohg's boss arena, with the hand hanging out of the cocoon. Will we learn about what Mohg did to him?

Miyazaki: Yes. The cocoon and arm you saw at the beginning of the trailer – this is actually the point of entry to the Land of Shadow where the players will enter to the DLC area. And this does have some relation to Miquella. And Miquella has, as we said, traveled to the Land of Shadow. He does have some motive and some objective there, which we don't want to give away too much. But essentially the player will be following in those footsteps in the same way that they followed the blessings from the Grace, the Sites of Grace in the Lands Between. They'll be following in Miquella's footsteps, and these will guide them through the Land of Shadow and reveal that motivation to them.

And of course the player is not the only one who is curious about Miquella. There are several characters in the world, and NPCs who have been following Miquella as well. And the player will encounter them on their journey in the Land of Shadow, and they will make new friends and enemies, we hope.

There were a lot of striking bosses and enemies that were revealed in this trailer, and I was wondering if we could just go through a handful of them one by one and you can either explain who or what they are, tell us an anecdote about their design, or anything you want. And I'm going to do my best to describe them because I don't know the names of them. First off, there's like... a giant basket of flaming kindling.

Miyazaki: Okay. So this giant basket of flame, as you so eloquently put it, Mitchell, was a terrible weapon you used in a war that occurred in the Land of Shadow, basically. So again, without saying too much, we can't give away the name just yet officially, but yes, it was a really gruesome weapon that was used. And the kindling that you see is actually the remains of bodies that were put in there to burn. So there's that friendly fellow.

And then there's an absolutely terrifying worm with arms that eats people whole.

Miyazaki: It's hard to talk about some of these enemies without spoiling anything, hopefully you understand. But there is a significant connection between these enemies, the way they are, and the Land of Shadow.

Okay. I'm just going to skip to the last one, if it's okay. But what can you tell me about the man in red with snakes and flames that's kind of like the focal point of this DLC trailer.

Miyazaki: Yes, we can speak to this character a little bit. This is a, as you say, a key figure of this DLC. We believe he will be officially revealed to be Messmer by the time the trailer goes live. And yes, he's a key figure in the DLC and he again has this important element of shadow to him, which is a key theme throughout the DLC as well.

And you may have seen at the end of the trailer, there was this piece of key art where it shows Messmer sat in this throne-like chair, and people who've played the game may recognize this throne to be one of those from the boss room where you battle Morgott. And this represents the thrones at the base of the Erdtree. And it's supposed to symbolize that Messmer stands on equal footing to these other demigods and children of Marika who sat around in these thrones and held the rooms of the Erdtree.

So he is an important figure who rivals these other demigods. And as you play the DLC, you will learn a little about why he wasn't featured in the legends of the Erdtree, the lands between. You'll realize why he exists in this shadow, this land of shadow.

Switching gears for a second. One of the big news points I think of Elden Ring was that the scenario was written by George R. R. Martin. Did he have any kind of role in the planning of Shadow of the Erdtree? And if so, just out of curiosity, have you talked to him since the game has come out and has he had any kind of reaction to the outstanding success of the game?

Miyazaki : The way George Martin's story has been incorporated is the same as it was with the base game with Elden Ring. And to avoid misunderstanding there, we just want to point out that he hasn't written anything exclusively and new for the sake of this DLC.

But it would still be fair to say that he and his mythos that he created for us are involved in the creation of Shadow of the Erdtree in the same way. And the reason for that is that in making the base game and making Elden Ring, we took from that mythos, but we only took one part of it. We took from a part that created the story of Elden Ring and created the world that we wanted to envision, and the Shadow of the Erdtree is yet another part of that original mythos that he wrote and that has inspired us to create the story of this DLC.

As for your second question, Mr. Martin and I have at least exchanged emails since the release of Elden Ring, but unfortunately we haven't been able to meet and speak in person. It's something I've wanted to do since the release and talk to him again and share in our joy for the game hopefully , but unfortunately he's just been so busy that we haven't had that chance yet. But I'll keep looking for an opportunity.

It's been two years now since Elden Ring has launched, and much of the hardcore audience have already found the best gear , they fought the hardest bosses, and they're at such high levels that I imagine it must be difficult to come up with content that can provide a challenge for those hardcore fans without making it too hard for some of the more casual Elden Ring players. So with all that said, how do you approach difficulty with a DLC such as this?

Miyazaki: Our general approach to difficulty has of course not changed to Elden Ring. We want to create a challenging experience that tests the players and that gives them a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment when they get through these struggles. However, we do want to stress that there's still a freedom of approach and a breadth of strategy to these encounters. And that means both how you approach them if you want to face these challenges or come back to them later and circumvent them and find another way around and come back when you're ready. This same philosophy is taken in Shadow of the Erdtree. And again, to our more hardcore players, they will find optional bosses who have been tuned in a similar way to the likes of Malenia, who I'm sure you remember from the base game , who are not crucial.

Shadow of the Erdtree will have more bosses like Malenia. Image credit: FromSoftware.

Miyazaki: Yeah, you might remember her. They're not crucial to completion of the DLC, but they are an optional extra to help challenge for those who are so inclined.

That said, there may not be another boss on exactly the same level as Malenia, but we feel like this is somewhere that we've paid close attention to, this level of challenge and offering that same level of freedom. And we hope that players are able to blossom in the Land of Shadow in the same way that they were in the lands between.

Actually, I want to redress that. It's not the fact that it's only a lesser level to Malenia, but we have prepared bosses on that with that similar mindset within the DLC area, ones that will challenge the player and hopefully be as memorable as Malenia was.

Final question on the topic of Shadow of the Erdtree, but do you envision this as the end of Elden Ring's story or is there room for either more DLC or in Elden Ring 2 down the line?

Miyazaki: We don't want to say this is the end of the Elden Ring saga for now. I think we said a similar thing at the end of Dark Souls 3. We didn't want to flatten those possibilities or put a pin in them just at that time. And it's a similar story with Elden Ring. We don't want to discourage the possibilities for that. There might be more ideas in the future.

We don't have any current plans to make a second DLC or a sequel, but we definitely don't want to snuff out that possibility. We think that there could well be something the future.

And lastly, the state of the game industry right now is pretty rough . There's a lot of layoffs, studio closures... the PS5 apparently is already in the latter stage of its lifecycle . Has the landscape of the industry changed your outlook at all on From Software's future?

Miyazaki: Yes. I'm aware of the situation in the games industry it's going through right now is quite harrowing. I think in terms of speaking to all those things that are happening, like layoffs and closures at other studios, I think it's difficult for me to understand the exact circumstances there. I won't speak to those in specifics.

Just speaking on behalf of FromSoftware, I think we are very blessed in the way that we have a lot of keen up and coming developers who've grown and they have developed within the studio and they've reached these director positions where they're able to direct projects such as the recent Armored Core VI. We have several of these up and coming directors who we're able to delegate these projects to, and we're able to have multiple projects on the go at once.

What I foresee in this climate, at least for us, is a FromSoftware where games can be directed by others, not only myself. I think in the face of that struggle and the place where the games industry is right now, I do see this as a time for us to continue to grow and continue to cultivate this talent and continue to release these games for as long as we can.

What James Gunn's Superman Costume Reveals About the New Man of Steel

Elden Ring New Game Plus: How to trigger NG+, what carries over & changes

New Game Plus is back in Elden Ring , despite the game making quite a few changes when compared to FromSoftware’s previous Souls style action RPGs.

The New Game Plus system works a little differently in each game, however, and Elden Ring has its own new spin on things. On this page, we’re going to explain everything you need to know about Elden Ring’s New Game Plus options, keeping it as spoiler-free as possible:

  • How Elden Ring NG+ Works
  • What Carries Over
  • What Doesn’t Carry Over
  • What Else Changes in NG+

Elden Ring New Game Plus: How does it work?

The New Game Plus option, aka 'Begin Journey 2', is added to the Roundtable Hold Site of Grace in Elden Ring.

First thing’s first - you’ll want to know the detail about how New Game Plus functions in Elden Ring. The core thing is that at the end of the game, after defeating the final bosses and taking final actions to achieve one of the Elden Ring Endings , you’ll have a choice of if you want to start NG+ right away or not .

  • If you choose to start New Game Plus immediately , you’ll be dropped back into an all-new save - with the carry-over noted below.
  • If you choose to defer and delay NG+ , you’ll be dropped back into The Lands Between as they were right before you tackled the final boss. When ready, you can go to the Site of Grace inside Roundtable Hold and choose the ‘Begin Journey 2’ option to start your new game , carrying over things as detailed below.

The important thing to note if you delay New Game Plus is that you can’t use this to cheese and see the other Elden Ring endings; the door to the final boss arenas is blocked off for this ‘Journey’, or game, once you’ve seen one ending. You can’t replay the finale of the game, basically, without starting over.

As well as a new chance to see the ending, NG+ generally gives you a chance to approach Elden Ring in a more completionist manner. Here’s everything you need to know about it:

Hitting New Game Plus on Elden Ring will revive all those bosses, such as the fella pictured...

What Carries Over in NG+

The core of your character in Elden Ring carries over to your enw game plus . Pretty much everything related to your character build and progression as an individual Tarnished will begin intact in this new game. For instance:

  • Weapons, Armor, Magic, Talismans, and Consumable Items
  • Weapon and summon upgrade levels
  • Standard consumables including Crafting & Upgrade materials
  • Your character level and your chosen stat attribute level upgrades
  • Boss Remembrance Items
  • Gestures and other similar unlocks
  • Crafting upgrade items like Cookbooks
  • Your Flask Level and Flask upgrades
  • You’ll keep the Spirit Ashes Summon Calling Bell , and the ability to Summon Torrent
  • Your choice of starting class will continue to be acknowledged as your starting point for a character respec
  • Your Keepsake ; you don't get to choose another

Additionally, you will keep your Map Exploration - which means the map fragments you’ve found and any discovered locations on the map remain in place, even though you’ll have to rediscover Sites of Grace in order to fast travel to those areas again.

Map Markers manually placed by the player also remain - which you can use to leave yourself reminders of key locations that aren’t automatically marked for your next play-through, if you plan ahead.

Because some things that carry over are introduced by story scenes (like Torrent and the Spirit Calling Bell), those events are not repeated on Journey 2.

Standard game features like summoning and invasions are still turned on in Journey 2 and beyond, though remember seeing summon signs or getting invaded will be less common when you’re a higher level, as there are level caps in place for online explorations unless you’re using a password to play with friends.

What Doesn’t Carry over to NG+

There are some elements of your game that won’t carry over to your second journey into The Lands Between, and will be deleted each and every time you use New Game Plus to start a new Journey in Elden Ring. Specifically:

  • Great Runes acquired from the grand bosses of Elden Ring will be revoked, and must be earned and powered up again to be used.
  • Any Keys and other items that allow game progression will be removed. This includes things like the Glintstone Key for Raya Lucaria Academy, and the items that allow the Lift of Dectus and Lift of Rold to function, both of which open up new areas.
  • Areas opened with the use of Swordstone Keys or teleporters opened with the Imbued Sword Key , or unlocked via puzzles will be closed once more, and require reopening.
  • While your Map remains intact, any discovered Sites of Grace will be removed; you’ll have to Touch Grace at each once again.
  • Bell Bearings that have been handed to the Two Maiden Husks NPC shop in Roundtable Hold will be reset; you’ll have to obtain them again. However, the NPCs that drop them will be revived.
  • As mentioned above, the status of all NPCs will be reset - those who died will be alive once more, and the Side Quest progress will also be reset. Any NPC aggro will be removed.
  • If you went for the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending, the power of the Frenzied Flame is removed from you when you start your NG+
  • You naturally won’t be able to respec until you unlock the areas and defeat the bosses necessary to unlock that feature - if you want to respec, do it first

What Else Changes?

In general, New Game Plus presents the same experience as your first Elden Ring play-through - just amped up to eleven (and then twelve, thirteen, and so on). Some notes:

  • Item placement remains the same
  • NPC side quests play out the same way
  • However, enemies are slightly more difficult with each journey you undertake to offset your own power levels
  • All enemies also drop more Runes for the same reason - to help you continue to level up

You can use some of the New Game Plus features to gain ever-more experience, flask charges, and so on - building an even more powerful character. It’s a way of experimenting and enjoying the Elden Ring journey in new ways.

It’s time to return to the Lands Between. Elden Ring developer released the first trailer for the open-world role-playing game’s expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree , on Wednesday — and finally revealed a release date. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree will be released June 21.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree was announced last February , but developer FromSoftware has revealed little about its DLC for 2022’s Game of the Year . “Rise, Tarnished, and let us walk a new path together,” the developer said at the time. “An upcoming expansion for Elden Ring , Shadow of the Erdtree , is currently in development. We hope you look forward to new adventures in the Lands Between.”

That location and the major players of Shadow of the Erdtree were teased in a single piece of artwork released alongside the DLC’s original announcement. That artwork included a reference to Miquella of the Haligtree: a demigod, Empyrean, and the twin brother of the fearsome Malenia and a character we don’t really get to see in the original Elden Ring . Miquella is teased in the battle against Mohg, where he is trapped inside an icky egg sac.

Players will track Miquella through the Land of Shadow in the expansion, and come face to face with a formidable new foe: Messmer the Impaler, a powerful boss who appears to have a strong connection to Miquella and Malenia.

Elden Ring is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Shadow of the Erdtree is coming to those platforms as well.

Brave Elden Ring player dies at least 2,333 times across "2-3 months" beating the RPG at level 1 even though "I'm terrible at these games"

This ain't your average level one run – it's even better

Elden Ring

Elden Ring, like all of FromSoftware 's famously challenging action RPGs, has been trivialized in about a million different ways. Two Malenias at once , no-hit randomizer runs , literal mind games – the list goes on. Arguably the most popular way to absolutely flex on the denizens of the Lands Between is clearing the whole game without leveling up a single time, with Elden Ring now a major part of the OneBros Reddit community where unleveled FromSoft diehards gather.

Compared to more niche speedruns and challenges, a lot of people have beaten Elden Ring at level one. So I wasn't immediately over the moon when I saw Reddit user Educational-Umpire42 celebrate their first level one clear. "Good job, gamer," I thought, fully intending to scroll on by. But something caught my eye, and as I sifted through their record of this familiar feat, including a hand-drawn journal tracking their boss clears, Educational-Umpire gradually became my favorite OneBro ever. Because in their words, they are not the kind of Capital-G Gamer who you'd expect to take on a task like this. In fact, they're "terrible at these games" but did the level one challenge anyway, and I think that's wonderful.

I just completed my first level one run on any of the souls games except I’m terrible at these games! (Death counts + tier list) from r/Eldenring

In response to other impressed onlookers, Educational-Umpire explained that the run took "152 hours over two-to-three months" because "it was very on and off with some bosses being roadblocks that stopped me playing for a bit."

Their Elden Ring journal, which brings back fond memories of the chronicles that artists made following the RPG's release , sheds some light on what those roadblocks were. Their lovingly illustrated record tallies up how many attempts the major bosses took them, and notes whether they used a summonable spirit to help with the battles.

Act surprised: Malenia was the biggest killer, with a staggering 803 recorded attempts before she was finally defeated on a no-hit run. Our legendary umpire also jotted down the first time they successfully dodged her infamous Water Fowl Dance combo – what looks like several hundred attempts in – and the first time they reached her second phase.

Godfrey, the real one, was another big threat with 453 tallied deaths. Mohg, Lord of Blood also put up a good fight with 210 attempts. Interestingly, the final boss duo, notorious for occasionally boiling down to "pure RNG" as Educational-Umpire argues in one Reddit reply, only took 143 attempts. The likes of Godrick the Grafted, meanwhile, were trounced in one attempt. Get trounced, idiot.

I'm especially fascinated by their reasoning for when and when not to use spirit summons, which cuts through to the only meaningful takeaway from the farcical debate over whether mechanics that FromSoftware added to Elden Ring are fair to use while playing Elden Ring (they are).

"It was out of respect and fun factor," Educational-Umpire writes. "If I didn’t respect how a boss achieved its difficulty, e.g a poorly designed/balanced gank like Godskin Duo or Fia's guards, and if I don’t find it enjoyable/fun, e.g sitting in Fire Giant's phase two for 15 minutes or watching Regal Ancestor heal all my pitiful damage up 200 meters away. There was one exception being Loretta, which was done out of laziness as at attempt 40 I realised, 'holy fuck, this is gonna take 400 attempts, I’m not spending 400 attempts on Loretta.'"

All told, our hero died at least 2,333 times – a figure I want to reiterate because this is my kind of challenge run. Elden Ring diehards like Bushy make absurd challenges look easy, which is impressive in its own right, but it's equally impressive for less-skilled players to clear the same hurdles through sheer determination. And I say at least 2,333 because I'm assuming their Elden Ring-addled mind missed a few deaths as the whole journey blurred together in a gray smear of agony and respawns. Because yes, if you're wondering, they do say: "Before anyone asks, I do hate myself!"

FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki wants to make more games as big as Elden Ring : "If I am allowed, I want to try."

Elden Ring Shadow Of The Erdtree will release in June 2024

Bandai Namco and From Software finally give DLC expansion a release date

Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree will release on 21st June 2024, From Software and Bandai Namco have announced alongside the Elden Ring DLC expansion's first proper reveal trailer, which you can watch below. It's going to be a fine old summer for returning Tarnished and enjoyers of open world RPGs at large.

The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC release will accompany two new special editions of Elden Ring, each including the expansion. There's a Game of the Year Edition priced at €79.99, and a Collector's Edition which will cost €259.99. You can theoretically find out more over at the official site , but it's currently sagging under the weight of traffic - people sure do love their collectible figurines.

Bamco and FromSoft's release date announcement brings an end to months of feverish speculation about when Shadow Of The Erdtree would arrive, which has at times rivalled GTA 6 release date chatter for intensity, though I'm not aware that any Erdtree-spotters have tried to glean release information from the phases of the moon . For a time, the Elden Ring DLC was rumoured to be getting a surprise release in February 2024, based on a grab-bag of retailer listings , sneaky Steam updates and the often-repeated observation that it's the game's second anniversary this month.

Even as Elden Ring players count the days till June, those of us in videobrain gurnalism and especially, the guides-writing trade can breathe a sigh of relief that we won't have to go all Elden Loopy writing up a massive Soulslike expansion overnight.

Perhaps you too are breathing a sigh of relief? I imagine not everybody has yet finished Elden Ring, as venerated as it is. I myself drifted away after the first few bosses because, to be quite frank, I think Elden Ring's "true" open world format - not to be confused with the twisty and secretive open-endedness of Dark Souls or Bloodborne - dilutes all the stuff it inherits from the other From Software games. Still, I will generously concede that Elden Ring is an extremely good videogame, and now would be the right time to return to The Lands Between and reach the endgame before Shadows Of The Erdtree arrives.

Elden Ring fans blown away by hidden passage and secret treasure you probably missed

Elden Ring fans blown away by hidden passage and secret treasure you probably missed

Featured Image Credit: FromSoftware

It’s a well-established fact that Elden Ring holds many secrets and easter eggs; the game is huge, vast, enormous. It doesn't matter how many hours you’ve put in, there’s likely something in The Lands Between that you’ve missed. Enter Reddit and its leagues of players who have a handy discussion that will point out some incredible secrets.

On the Elden Ring subreddit a user asked the collective, “What are the biggest secrets in the game?” They specified they didn’t want lore, they wanted secrets they could hunt down for themselves. And Reddit did not disappoint .

Elden Ring will be expanding soon with the DLC Shadow of the Erdtree

The top reply is a hidden corridor holding a chest which can be found in Deeproot Depths, “located on the wall adjacent to Hyetta (in the area where the Frenzied Flame Proscription is located). Roll towards the wall; it will disappear, revealing a short hallway. At the end of this hallway, there is a chest. Behind the chest, another disappearing wall.” FromSoftware has always loved their vanishing walls, I know I spent plenty of time rolling into random walls, just in case.

Another user recommends a slightly different action to the norm when you arrive at Weeping Peninsula, “at the first merchant when you hit the spiritspring w torrent, don't jump on the plateau, instead jump southeast to land on the tower there, and grab the best early shield in the game.”

I’m currently replaying Elden Ring , so I’m making note of all of these tips. There’s a bit of everything in the thread including, “You can use crystal darts to short-circuit stone imps, erdtree burial watchdogs, and giant golems.” from one user . Or another who jumps in with, “The cinqueda, the dagger used by Gurranq, can be obtained by platforming down the cliff behind the Bestial Sanctum. The way down isn't exactly obvious and will take some weird jumping to reach the bottom.” Whether you’re playing for the first time or the 10th time, check out the secrets in this thread.
