More travelers than ever are considering travel insurance, but navigating the vast seas of insurance companies and coverage options can leave you feeling less than enthused about your next trip. But if you want to protect your investment, Generali Global Assistance is a notable provider. Here’s what to expect and the plans the company offers.

Generali offers three different plans (Standard, Preferred or Premium), depending on what type of trip you’re planning. Each offers a different level of coverage and benefits.

Here’s a closer look at what a standard coverage plan with Generali might cost. Let’s say you and your partner — two travelers in their thirties — are planning to take a roughly $4,000 trip from New York to Germany for one week.

For this itinerary, a Generali Standard plan would cost $144. Rental car coverage isn’t included, but you can add it to your plan for $63 for the week.

The Preferred level of coverage can be a good option for those traveling with expensive gear like golf clubs or skis. For the same sample itinerary, a Generali Preferred plan would cost $162, an $18 upgrade from Standard. Rental car coverage is also extra.

The Premium plan is designed for luxury travel or vacations with a high price tag. Notably, this plan includes rental car insurance for no extra fee. Also important to note that only the Premium plan offers coverage for pre-existing medical conditions . A Generali Premium plan for our sample itinerary would cost $217, a $55 upgrade from Standard.

It’s important to choose the right coverage for you and your trip based on your needs and what each plan covers. So make sure to look at each carefully.

If you have pre-existing medical conditions, your best bet will be to stick with the Premium plan. It’s more expensive, but you’ll be covered no matter what medical issues arise on your trip.

The Standard plan is the only one with no coverage for accidental death and dismemberment during on-the-ground travel (air travel is covered, though).

If you’re traveling with sports equipment, you may want to opt for one of the top two tiers of coverage. Just make sure to accurately estimate how much your gear is worth to ensure you’re getting the coverage you need.

If your trip is worth more, you’re bringing more luggage, etc., consider more expensive coverage. That way, if something goes wrong, you, your possessions and plans are more fully protected.

Unlike some other travel insurance companies, Generali (formerly known as CSA Travel Protection or colloquially as CSA Travel Insurance) offers COVID-19 coverage with every plan. That means that if you, a family member or a travel companion test positive for COVID-19 before or during your trip, you’ll be covered for trip cancellation and interruption, travel delay, medical and dental, and emergency assistance and transportation.

You’ll also be covered if you have to extend your trip due to quarantining or isolation and can’t return home on schedule.

You do have to meet certain requirements to qualify — such as using an approved test and taking it while in front of an authorized supervisor.

When it comes time to get a quote and choose your travel insurance plan, you can do so on the Generali website. Type in trip details like destination, where you’re from, your age, the total cost of the trip and your travel dates. Quotes for all three tiers of plans will be presented.

Then, select add-ons like rental car insurance if you’re not opting for the Premium plan and start the checkout process.

Like many travel insurance policies, there are several incidents that aren’t covered by Generali travel insurance. Examples include injuries that result from mental disorders, pregnancy, injuries as a result of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or if you are flying an aircraft yourself.

Destination matters, too. As of publication, you can’t get coverage for travel to Belarus, the Crimea Peninsula, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Syria or Ukraine. Also, you won’t be covered for anything that results from acts of war or civil disorder.

If you’re participating in extreme sports or activities like skydiving, mountain climbing or backcountry skiing, many benefits won’t be covered.

No matter what policy you choose, read the fine print before your buy, including everything that’s excluded from coverage. That will help ensure there are no surprises if your trip goes awry.

Generali provides three tiers of travel insurance for those who want to protect their nonrefundable trip expenses and/or who want to have a safety net in case their travels are disrupted or canceled.

Both are well-established groups within the travel insurance industry. Ideally, this would translate to a travel insurance company with first-class service and coverage. The question for many consumers is simple: does Generali live up to customers' expectations?

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance Review: Types of Policies Offered

Generali offers three tiers of travel insurance coverage: Premium, Preferred, and Standard.

Its site has a simple plan comparison chart and quoting system to help potential buyers choose between the three options.

Generali travel insurance covers baggage delay and loss, travel delay, interruption, cancellation, and missed connection reimbursement benefits.

Here are some of the highlights for each plan to help you better understand what coverage you may need:

Generali's Premium plan offers generous coverage for various scenarios. For example, you'll enjoy up to 175% reimbursement of your trip cost if your travels are interrupted for reasons beyond your control. Generali's Premium plan also includes up to $1,000 per person in travel delay reimbursement and up to $1 million per covered individual for emergency assistance or transportation. Finally, it has up to $2,000 per person in replacement expenses (i.e., toiletries, clothing, and other necessities while you wait for your delayed bag) if your baggage is lost.

With the Preferred plan, you can expect 150% reimbursement for inevitable trip interruptions. It also offers travelers up to $1,000 per person for travel delay reimbursement. In addition, the emergency assistance or transportation coverage drops from $1 million to $500,000 per person, and travelers can enjoy up to $1,500 per person if baggage is lost.

The Standard Plan offers the lowest coverage with more budget-friendly premiums. It offers up to 125% reimbursement for trip interruption and up to $1,000 in travel delay reimbursement. Policyholders are limited to $250,000 per person for emergency assistance or transportation. If your baggage is lost, you'd have $1,000 to replace toiletries, clothing, and other belongings.

Additional Coverage Options

Generali Travel Insurance offers two add-on services alongside your base travel insurance plan:

Trip cancellation for any reason (CFAR)

Cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage reimburses you for nonrefundable expenses associated with canceling travel you've already paid for. Generali's Premium plan is eligible for CFAR coverage which pays you back for 60% of the total nonrefundable cost of your travel.

You must purchase CFAR coverage on your Premium plan within 24 hours of your initial deposit. However, eligible customers can take advantage of its full benefits, as the name suggests, for any reason. Medical problems, family emergencies, work scheduling issues, or just changing your mind are a few of the reasons Generali might pay a CFAR claim.

Preferred and Standard plans are not eligible for CFAR upgrades. New York residents are also not eligible for CFAR coverage. Generali's website estimates buyers will pay an additional 50% in travel insurance premiums for this rider while the max reimbursement is only 60% of the "penalty amount" (i.e., nonrefundable costs).

Rental car damage protection

Travelers can also purchase rental car coverage alongside their travel insurance policy. Premium plan customers already have up to $25,000 in rental car protection in their policy benefits. Preferred and Standard plan holders can purchase the same coverage amount.

Texas residents are not eligible for rental car coverage. If you're unsure about this rider, we recommend checking the limits of your auto insurance. Generally, US-based auto insurance extends to rental cars. But you may want to supplement your coverage depending on what you already have.

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance FAQs

Generali Travel Insurance is part of an insurance network active since 1831. It offers three travel insurance plans with generous tiers of coverage at reasonable rates, and the company maintains an A financial rating with AM Best. This rating indicates Generali Global Assistance is likely to continue to meet its financial obligations.

You can file your travel insurance claim with Generali travel insurance through the company's eClaims portal. However, Generali offers phone, email, and other options for customers filing claims. Generali's responses to reviews on TrustPilot indicate it aims to process all claims within 30 days.

We priced out a 9-day trip to two European countries for a healthy 34-year-old solo traveler from Texas staying in hotels and traveling by plane and train.

CFAR coverage for this trip would cost an additional $57.50 if purchased alongside the Premium plan. But, again, the CFAR rider is only available with the premium plan.

How to File a Claim with Generali Travel Insurance

To file a claim with Generali's travel insurance division, start at the eClaims portal .

You can also call its claims department at 800-541-3522 for assistance. Generali promises all insurance claim calls will be returned within one business day, and most calls are returned on the same day they are received. Many people reported quick claims processing and reimbursement when we reviewed recent customer feedback.

However, several reviews described waiting over 30 days only to discover Generali had yet to review their claims submission. As such, if you are still waiting to receive a response indicating Generali is working on your claim within a few days, we recommend checking in with customer service.

You'll need to provide supporting documentation for your claim, such as proof of travel delay from the airline or relevant claim checks for lost baggage. Your eClaims portal should give you the necessary details and update you on the ongoing status of your claim. Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance vs. Nationwide Travel Insurance

Nationwide Travel Insurance is part of an extensive network of insurance products. Unlike Generali, you'll recognize any Nationwide product as it's listed on the same website. In addition, Nationwide offers bundling discounts, depending on what you're buying. It also sells short-term and long-term insurance plans (like auto and home).

This established insurance company has been in business since 1925. Its travel insurance wing offers plans and coverage options to suit diverse travelers' needs. Customer review sites like TrustPilot had reviews complaining about long wait times and claims overlooked with Generali. Nationwide's reviews described long processing times, poor communication, and other claims-based issues.

If you're solely concerned about coverage and rates, Generali is upfront about the fact that its CFAR coverage is exceptionally costly. The company's website seems to imply the CFAR rider's cost is bloated compared to its value. But its basic plans have a few more perks compared to Nationwide's single-trip plans while Nationwide offers cruise plans and multi-trip options, Generali does not match at the time of this review.

Allianz Travel Insurance is another reputable insurance company that has been in business since 1890. Allianz is one of the biggest names in travel insurance, serving more than 55 million travelers across dozens of countries.

Both Generali and Allianz offer comprehensive single-trip coverage options for travelers. Generali's website makes reviewing and comparing its three travel insurance plans easy. However, Allianz offers annual (multi-trip) policies Generali doesn't. Both companies list rental car protections for some travelers.

Allianz customers leaving reviews online indicate the claims process may be confusing and drawn out. Most importantly, a few reviews cautioned future travelers to come in with complete documentation. In our experience, offering more paperwork rather than less with Allianz is better.

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance vs. InsureMyTrip

InsureMyTrip.com is an insurance broker using your travel details to collect insurance company bids on your behalf. You can enter your information and get multiple quotes back. As a result, Generali may be one of the insurance providers providing you with a quote through InsureMyTrip. Rates may not match what a provider would offer on its website. Broker websites like InsureMyTrip often charge a premium to account for third-party fees or offer discounts as a partner company knows it's competing for customers no matter what. Whatever the case, InsureMyTrip makes it easier to shop for travel insurance. However, it would not process any claims. So for some consumers, it may be more complicated to determine where to go to make a claim against their policies or get help if something goes wrong.

Generali Global Assistance is a U.S.-based travel insurance provider that offers 3 different plan levels (Standard, Preferred, and Premium) for trips of differing lengths and travel groups of various sizes. Its plans are available for both domestic and international travel and come as packages, rather than needing to purchase coverage elements independently.

Is Generali Global Assistance travel insurance right for you? Here’s what you should know.

Generali Global Assistance plans are available only to U.S. residents . And while plans are available for both domestic and international travel, not all destinations are covered .

Exclusions include Afghanistan, Belarus, Crimea and the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s regions, Cuba, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Syria, and Venezuela. Additionally, the Generali Global Assistance website says it has limited ability to help you if you’re visiting Ukraine.

What Does Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance Include?

Before diving into the coverage terms and benefit types, let’s consider what’s included for all customers, regardless of which plan is chosen.

All customers get a “free look period” of up to 30 days, depending on their state of residence. This period allows you to get a full refund if you decide your Generali Global Assistance plan isn’t the right travel insurance plan for you. However, you can’t receive a refund if you’ve started your trip or if you’ve submitted a claim.

You’re also covered for financial insolvency of your common carrier as part of your trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits. Finally, you’ll have access to telemedicine consultations with any plan type, helping you access a doctor in non-emergency cases.

COVID-19 coverage applies under multiple policy benefits. If you meet the requirements , you can be reimbursed for 100% of your expenses and even have your policy extended until your quarantine period ends and you’re able to travel home.

This coverage applies to you, your traveling companions, and family members as long as you purchase your travel insurance plan before getting sick or visiting a doctor. Coverage applies also when you test positive, including at-home tests if they include video supervision.

There are 2 optional add-ons that merit discussion, as well. Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage isn’t included with any Generali Global Assistance travel insurance plans . However, you can add it to your Premium plan as long as you do so within 24 hours of making the first payment or deposit toward your trip.

Another add-on with Premium plans is coverage for pre-existing medical conditions . To get this coverage, you must add it to your plan before or within 24 hours of your final trip payment. Pre-existing conditions coverage applies if you’re medically able to travel at the time you buy the plan and if all prepaid trip costs with cancellation fees are insured.

Ensure you add Cancel for Any Reason or pre-existing conditions coverage to your plan within 24 hours. Otherwise, you’ll lose these options.

When considering a travel insurance plan, you’re probably assuming that you get more coverage when you pay more. That’s largely true. Benefit coverage amounts will be higher on premium plans from the same provider. But that’s not necessarily true when comparing providers to each other.

In order to know what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy, you should first understand what the types of coverage are:

  • Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) Coverage: This add-on policy covers up to 60% of your losses if you cancel for reasons not covered in other sections of your policy.
  • Pre-existing Medical Conditions: Available only with the Premium plan, your current medical conditions may be covered if you buy a plan before or within 24 hours of making your final trip payment and are medically able to travel at the time of purchase.
  • Trip Cancellation Insurance: You’ll receive reimbursement for prepaid, non-refundable costs if you cancel a trip for one of the covered reasons listed in your policy.
  • Trip Interruption: Once you start your trip, this coverage goes into effect and can reimburse non-refundable costs from lost portions of your travel plan. It also can cover costs to catch up with your trip if there are delays for covered reasons.
  • Trip Delay: You can be reimbursed for meals, parking, transportation, and other expenses incurred because of delays. This coverage goes into effect after a delay of 10 hours with the Standard plan, 8 hours with the Preferred plan, or 6 hours with the Premium plan.
  • Baggage Loss or Damage: This coverage is secondary to homeowner’s or renter’s insurance and covers lost, damaged, or stolen baggage — including the items inside, with some exceptions. This coverage may even reimburse the cost of replacing a passport during your trip.
  • Baggage Delay: If your luggage is delayed, you can be reimbursed for reasonable costs incurred while waiting for it to arrive, such as clothes and toiletries. Reimbursement only applies after delays of 24 hours with the Standard plan, 18 hours with Preferred, or 12 hours with a Premium plan.
  • Sporting Equipment Loss or Damage: Similar to baggage coverage, this section specifically applies to sporting equipment you take on your trip.
  • Sporting Equipment Delay: You’ll be reimbursed for costs incurred while waiting for delayed sporting equipment, such as needing to rent skis until yours arrive. Required delays are 18 hours with Preferred plans and 12 hours with Premium plans.
  • Missed Connection: This coverage applies only to cruises and tours and covers your extra costs to catch up with your travel plans and/or lodging and meals during your delays. Coverage applies to flights that are canceled or delayed for at least 3 hours because of inclement weather.
  • Medical and Dental: This protection covers illnesses and injuries during your trip and the resulting expenses. It also can cover deductibles or unpaid expenses from your health insurance provider.
  • Emergency Assistance and Transportation: If you encounter an emergency or medical situation where adequate healthcare isn’t available nearby, you can be evacuated to an appropriate facility. This policy also covers returning your remains to the U.S. or local burial costs in the event of death.
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment — Air Flight Accident: This coverage provides payments if you lose life, limb, or sight during a flight. In case of death, the payout goes to your designated beneficiary.
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment — Travel Accident: Similar to the coverage above, this covers loss of life, limb, or sight during other types of travel (not flights).
  • Rental Car Damage: You’re covered for collision damage, theft, vandalism, natural disasters, or damages for reasons beyond your control. Some types of vehicles are excluded, but coverage applies to all drivers listed on your rental agreement. Coverage is up to the cash value of the car or the cost of repairs and related costs — whichever is less. This coverage isn’t available to residents of Texas.

It’s also important to note that each section has rules and restrictions about which costs are covered, when coverage applies, and other terms you must follow.

Sometimes, understanding what’s not included may be more important than comparing prices between Generali Global Assistance plans and other companies selling travel insurance.

Why is that? Well, exclusions are built into every insurance benefit , and it’s important to know if your particular trip, destination, or activity is excluded from coverage. Having robust travel insurance won’t help if it doesn’t cover your specific situation.

For example, you aren’t covered if you sustain injuries while intoxicated or for medical emergencies related to pregnancy . You also aren’t covered when you’re the one flying a plane or you’re participating in extreme sports .

What is Generali Global Assistance?

As an insurance company, Assicurazoni Generali traces their history back to Trieste, Italy. In 1831, Generali first opened for business as a property insurance company. Over the next 190 years, the company went through several transitions as Italy — and greater Europe — broke up and reformed several times. CSA Travel Insurance was formed in 1991 as one of the pioneers of the travel insurance industry. Their first product covered trip cancellation for tourists going abroad, allowing them to recover certain costs in the event a major life event forced them to stay home.

Generali purchased the assets of Europ Assistance in 2001, followed by CSA Travel Protection years later. By 2016, the Italian insurance giant began rebranding CSA and Europ Assistance USA as Generali Global Assistance, giving them a unified brand in the marketplace. Three years later, Generali would go on to acquire Trip Mate, further expanding their reach into the travel insurance market.

Each time I travel, Generali is my go-to in terms of travel insurance. When I sign up, I simply go online, put in where I'm going, and how long I'm gonna be there for and they provide me with options in terms of possible packages. I select one of them and pay for it and their prices are very reasonable. Also, in terms of their customer service, if I have to call and ask a question, it's pretty easy.

When I was trying to find a travel insurance that covered us to go to Patagonia, Generali had the best coverage available. It was for a three-week holiday with quite a lot of cost involved and we needed to make sure we had good coverage. We went for the highest coverage amount so it was the most amount of money, but it was exactly what we were wanting.

Generali gave me a good service with an insurance claim I made. I wasn't sure whether I had to make the claim while we were away. I logged in and spoke to a representative on their chat function. It was super quick. They suggested that we do it when we were back because if there was another claim to be made on the holiday, it would need to be done at the same time. We had a lost baggage at the beginning of the holiday, and we filed for that when we got back. They transferred the money straight away, no questions asked, after we provided the receipts of the stuff we had to buy for when our luggage was missing. I was impressed that Generali did it well and so cleanly. I've had insurance companies try to wiggle their way out of returning the money when there was a claim.

Generali has more coverage for the different options available compared to other providers. I purchased travel insurance because I was on a cruise ship last year and five people died. I was in Aruba one time and a young girl got her leg cut during a boating accident. I started thinking about transporting bodies back to the US and medical coverage and how the medical insurance doesn't cover you outside of the country. I decided that Generali might be a good option to help cover some unexpected things.

I signed up with them online and the process was good. I put in different options for the costs of the trip because some things, I didn't care about recovering if I lost out on the trip. And I primarily was more interested in covering certain aspects of the trip, like the high expensive costs, the cruise fare and insurance for different incidents. If you would look online, it would give you the full amount of what was covered. Since I've signed up, I keep getting emails explaining different coverages and different things to watch out for. They've been good about keeping you informed.

I am satisfied with the service and the payment was as I expected. The overall time to process my claim was reasonable. I did encounter a few hiccups that I think could have been handled better.

1. 12 days after I submitted the claim, Generali requested flight credit information for my United flight, even though it had been included in the documents I had originally submitted. This was not a big deal, but it was unnecessary.

2. The original payment made to me neglected to include my purchase of a flight with Croatia Air. Again, this information was included in the original documents. This happened even though a partial refund from Croatia Air was part of the original payment calculation.

3. I immediately sent an email to Generali to point out Croatia Air discrepancy. I got a robo-response but otherwise I didn't hear back for over a week. My claim status still showed as completed on the online portal. I then left a voicemail for the claims agent and got a response within a day or two after that. I don't know if it was my phone message that kick-started the response, but if you had promptly changed the online status to "re-opened" or "in review" after my email, then I would not have been so anxious and would have been more patient.

We ended up having to cancel a trip back in April because of a death in the family and when I talked to the girl from Generali, she explained what the time frame was gonna be and that was very good because if I had been expecting something faster, I might have gotten upset. She said I would get an email from them with a link to a web page. It would tell me all the information I needed to send in. It was 30 days from the event that caused the cancellation to when I was actually able to submit the paperwork and then, they reviewed it. They committed to 10 working days but it was less than that. They called me and said it was approved. It was as easy as could be and they came through in a big way. So, I will use Generali from now on. They are cheaper than Allianz and a little more expensive than a couple of other companies I tried but I had a great experience, so I'll pay that little bit of difference.

My wife got appendicitis a few days before the trip. We were lucky we had the insurance with Generali. I went online to file the paperwork for the claim. When we weren't getting a response, I found it difficult to get people on the phone. Eventually, I was able to get one of their representatives on the phone and he was extraordinarily nice, very understanding and cooperative. However, I found out that, apparently, the representative who was trying to evaluate the case whether or not we were qualified for coverage wasn't getting the same information that I was putting online. He wasn't seeing what I was seeing. I was sending it to him personally rather than through the online portal and it worked out correctly.

Based on the experience the first time, I have another trip that I'm planning and I got Generali insurance again for it. All in all, I'm pleased with Generali. It wasn't always easy, but it worked out well once I understood the process and got the right representative on the phone to help me through the process. It's expensive but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Generali to someone else who is considering travel insurance. The company is reputable. They stood behind their insurance. Once they got the details that they were asking for, they were very honorable in the way they handled the account.

Generali has always wanted us to get to get the gold package so we just online and get the more basic version. The gold package covers rental cars and the other package covers sports equipment. This last time, I was concerned that I didn't get the policy, but it turned out it was in my spam. The one time we used it, getting the claim was easy. My wife fell off a bike and had a scuffed-up elbow and twisted ankle and knee. We paid the ER then Generali reimbursed us for it. It worked as expected.

Essentially, what Generali has is misleading. First of all, I did not insure travel is correct and I didn't expect anything, but the table they have at the bottom of my policy said $1,500 for disruption. So, I worked for hours to fill a claim. I had a connection. Because of fog the airport was closed in. I missed the connection on American Airlines, a first-class ticket, which was non-refundable. I had to buy a new ticket, which cost me $500. American Airlines refunded the tax. It cost me 1,500 bucks. So, I claimed 1,500 minus the taxes and the response I got was, “It's a normal thing, what happened. And furthermore, you did not insure travel, and therefore you pay 175. You did not insure the trip,” which is correct. I only did medical, “And therefore, we won't pay you anything.”

I had a two-hour gap between my arrival time and departure time with two separate tickets, a second ticket, American Airlines, to San Francisco. So I took a two-hour difference between the flights. It's not like I did 15 minutes and the airport was closed for four hours. I reached about three hours later than it was supposed to be. And of course, the flight was already gone. And then I tried to get another ticket. The earliest date I could get anything was two days later. I did not even submit the hotel bills. I stayed at Marriott. And I bought a ticket for 1,500 bucks, plus minus. Nobody called me. I'm not blaming. Nobody called. They sent me a polite letter. I don't have any complaints about that, except that the table was really misleading. I'm not happy.

Generali is a good option. I'd recommend it to another solo traveler. You always wanna pay less, but the amount of coverage they are offering is generous. Navigating their website was difficult for me though.

Better Business Bureau Rating

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) file was originally opened as the CSA Travel Protection Insurance Company in 1994 and has been an accredited business since 2009. Since the brand change, the customer service rating of Generali Global Assistance has since maintained its “A+” rating with the BBB. There are a total of 197 customer reviews with 556 total customer complaints in three years, as of Sept. 2021. Of those complaints; there were 443 with products/services, 13 with advertising/sales issues, 71 with billing/collection issues, 24 with guarantee/warranty issues, and 5 were delivery issues. Also, of these complaints, 98 were resolved to the customer’s satisfaction. The company has a composite score rating of 1.03 out of 5 stars.

Stuck at airport after being denied boarding because some info was incorrect on one of our group's tickets. Lost 2days at resort. Checking fine print it would only be covered if the airline or the resort has filed for bankruptcy.

Useless policy.

Only good thing was I was joking at inside the window for cancelling the policy and getting my premium refunded.

My only problem, having happened twice now, is that that haven’t replied to questions I’ve submitted through their Web portal. I’m tried to call, but the greeting was completely garbled. I made a claim on a previous trip, and once I had a person to work with and her phone number, things went for me.

Their claim department was very prompt

I had to change the dates of my policy and was extremely frustrated trying to talk to a person. Automated voice was not helpful at all!!! I t took me days to try to contact someone. I went through emails, phone calls (but not a good number). Eventually I wrote a letter to the headquarters. Very frustrating experience to just make minor changes to my policy

They were great. Filed claim, they had a few good inquires I answered and check is in the mail. No problems. Will continue using them.

I e never had to use my travel insurance before and I am hoping the claim process and actually receiving payment for the medical accident t will be successful and timely.

It is hard and slow to get anywhere. Confusing web forms, not user friendly. Still dont know if i will be compensated for trip interruption

I submitted a claim because the was an extreme blizzard that prevented us from arriving in North Lake Tahoe on 3/2 and 3/3. I submitted 2 claims one for each day before leaving. I tried to call the customer support. All the responses were automated driving me to their claims portal. One claim was closed. I submitted all docs for weather delays and receipts for stay on the claim. I have not received a response why the one claim was closed. I have only received messages to submit documents with in 20 days. I resubmitted to blizzard notices and the airbnb receipts. I tried to call the customer support today but only received automated status updates and the call ends.

It is very unclear what what is occurring, what it needed, what to expect and why one claim was closed.

The group at Generali that was supposed to help with illness during the trip never got back to me even after sending them medical info and several phone calls. As a whole their customer support team is very difficult to get on the phone.

Looking to cater to the varying needs of different types of traveler, Generali offers three plan options - Premium, Preferred and Standard. At the most basic level, the Standard plan is aimed primarily at those traveling within the US, including flights, road trips and vacation rentals, and includes coverage for trip cancellation, interruption, baggage, medical and dental coverage, and more. The 24/7 assistance services also means that help should never be too far away. The next step up is the Preferred plan, which offers everything that is available under the Standard plan, but also includes more specific coverage for sporting equipment, making it the plan you will need for ski, golf, and hiking trips, international travel and more.

The top tier of travel insurance offered by Generali is the Premium plan, which is aimed at covering more expensive travel, such as cruises and tours. Premium offers the highest available benefit limits, including enhanced coverage for certain types of emergency, and will also be the plan that you need to take out if you have any pre-existing medical conditions to take into consideration. Premium is also the only option that usually provides cover if you need to cancel your trip for any reason (to 75% of the cost), but this is temporarily unavailable due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With Generali having recently been rated #3 in Newsweek's 2020 list of America's Best Customer Service, it is unlikely you will be disappointed anyway. A highly impressive average customer rating of 4.58 stars out of five is awarded on InsureMyTrip.com, while in terms of the ability to meet its obligations to policyholders, Generali receives an A from A.M. Best ratings for financial strength, which equates to Excellent.

Generali usually offers some excellent value for the price that you pay. As with most travel insurances, prices were most likely to vary by the age of travelers rather than location or state of residence, but overall, Generali's prices ran below average next to comparable plans. What's more, as well often costing less, the coverage on offer through Generali usually bettered that available elsewhere too. Of particular note is the lost luggage reimbursement, while the trip delay and missed connection compensations run higher than most plans as well. 

Regardless of the plan option you choose, 100% of your trip is insured for cancellation and round-the-clock emergency assistance is always available. Cancellation and interruption coverage The cancellation compensations were comparable to other agencies, plus Generali offers reimbursement if you have to cancel your trip because your carrier or tour agency declares financial default. The Cancel for Any Reason provision that is normally available on the Premium plan is also something that not all travel insurers will offer. Compensation for missed connections, lost luggage and expenses incurred from delayed luggage are higher than most, making it a strong choice if you have a lot of connections that may increase the chance of your luggage making a side trip to another city. It does not arrange for non-medical evacuation, but will reimburse you for those costs.

Medical coverage The medical coverage available through Generali is higher than most other trip insurances, particularly in relation to pure medical expense compensation and emergency medical evacuation. If you are planning a potentially dangerous adventure, going to a remote area or have another reason to expect that a medical emergency may get expensive, this insurance is worth considering. It also has a long pre-existing condition waiver of 180 days.

Generali covers lost or stolen prescription medications, and also has in-network doctors around the world, so that if you fall ill and can be seen by one of its network physicians, it pays the expenses immediately. For nearly every other instance, it reimburses you after you have made claims with your regular health insurance and received what you can from it.

Generali Global Assistance Review: Making a claim

Claims can be initiated online through the e-Claims portal or via a phone call to the claims department - calls are returned within one business day, if not on the same day that they are received. The website also lists an email address, mailing address and fax number all relating specifically to claims that could also be used if you so wish.

While claims must be submitted within one year, policyholders are advised to submit them as soon as possible to ensure a speedy resolution - under normal circumstances, the review process can take up to 30 days, although at present, Generali says that a high volume of inquiries means it could take longer. You will be assigned a dedicated representative to see the process through from start to finish, while the status of any claim can be monitored using the online portal. 

On the downside, Generali perhaps lists more requirements for filing claims than most insurance agencies do. For example, it asks you to agree to be examined by one of its doctors if filing a claim for medical reasons. The list of documents required to make a claim can be found on the website, along with instructions to assist in filing.

Should you choose Generali travel insurance?

Generali Global Assistance is an excellent travel insurance service, with cheaper-than-average prices, and often better-than-average coverage. The website is accessible and should have all the information that you need, while the customer service is among the best you are likely to find. While the claims process might be slightly more stringent than other travel insurance companies, the requirements are clearly laid out at the start. Ultimately, if your travel plans arouse any concern in relation to luggage loss or delays, or the high cost of medical care and evacuation, Generali offers one of the best life insurance services that there is.

Summary: Generali is the third most popular provider after Trawick and Seven Corners. However, their coverage is worse in several areas, and there are better choices for the same cost.

Their plans don’t cover financial default for cancellation, and don’t offer the optional Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) upgrade. Their medical coverage is Secondary vs Primary, and they do not have pre-existing conditions coverage. Their medical evacuation limits are lower, but otherwise their coverage limits are similar.

In short, there are better alternatives for the same money.

Generali follows the popular “Good, better, best” plan choices like several other companies. Their plans are called Standard, Preferred, and Premium. Each level has different coverage, coverage limits, and options.

Better alternatives to Generali Even though Generali is a reputable and popular company, there are better choices for the money. When looking at a side-by-side comparison, they lack in several areas.

For a budget-minded alternative, Seven Corners’ RoundTrip Basic has better coverage than Generali Standard. It covers hurricane warnings, financial default, and has the option for Cancel For Any Reason upgrade.

For a standard plan alternative,  Travel Insured offers a plan called Worldwide Trip Protector that has better coverage for a comparable price. This plan has better hurricane & weather coverage, includes Cancel For Work Reasons, includes non-medical evacuation, and covers pre-existing conditions. That is a lot of extra coverage for a similar cost.

Standard trip cancellation coverage has a list of covered reasons for cancellation. This list includes things like getting sick, terrorism, a hurricane or weather, and more. This list does a good job of covering the most common reasons for cancelation, but it cannot cover everything.

Cancel For Any Reason extends this coverage for peace-of-mind. It lets you cancel your trip up until 48 hours before your trip departure and receive up to 75% of your trip money back.

Travelers like the peace-of-mind this coverage provides. It gives you a lot of flexibility in cancelling your trip and still getting most of your money back.

Generali and Covid-19

All  Generali plans covers Covid-19 for both trip cancellation and emergency medical expenses.

Trip Cancellation and Covid-19

Generali treats Coronavirus like any other sickness when it comes to trip cancellation coverage . Trip cancellation covers cancellations if someone gets sick or injured before the trip and cannot travel. This is the most popular reason for trip cancellation, and travelers make claims for this all the time. It might be a child with the flu. Or a parent having a stroke and you need to care for them.

In the case of Covid, if you get sick before departure and your doctor advises you to cancel, this is a covered reason for cancelling . You would receive any trip expenses you lose as a reimbursement from the insurance company. Physicians provide verification for this all the time.

Emergency Medical Treatment and Covid-19

Similarly, Generali’s plans cover Covid as they would any other sickness for emergency medical care . If you are traveling abroad and get sick or have an illness, you are covered for medical care costs.

How much does Generali insurance cost?

Generali tends to be lower cost or similar to other plans, but their lack of coverage makes them a bad choice.

It’s hard to compare all plans here, so here are the most popular comparable plans that we’ll compare:

Generali Preferred As we said above, Generali is lacking in a few coverages like pre-existing conditions and financial default. They do not have the option for CFAR coverage. Their medical coverage is adequate at $150,000, but it is Secondary vs Primary, which means you need to use any other insurance you might have first.

Trawick Safe Travels Voyager Trawick has a high medical limit here at $250,000. This is more than adequate travel medical coverage for most trips. I recommend at least $100,000 for international travel. This plan also has the option to upgrade with Cancel For Any Reason, but the hurricane coverage is not as good as the other plans here.

Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector This is a plan with medical limit of $100,000. This is an adequate amount of travel medical coverage for most trips. Travel Insured has better hurricane & weather coverage. This plan also has the option to upgrade with Cancel For Any Reason.

Now let’s look at pricing based on different types of travelers and trips:

Trip 1 This is a seven day trip, two travelers both aged 45, with a trip cost of $3,500

  • Generali Preferred- $157
  • Trawick Safe Travels Voyager- $182
  • Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector- $224

Here, Generali is lower than the other two plans, but with much less coverage. The savings are not worth it.

Trip 2 This is a seven day trip, a family of four (ages 45, 45, 12, 10) with a trip cost of $6,500

  • Generali Preferred- $277
  • Trawick Safe Travels Voyager- $286

In this case, Generali is in the middle. Lower but about the same as Trawick, and more than Travel Insured. Again, considering the difference in coverage Generali is not the best choice.

Trip 3 This is a 14-day trip, two travelers both aged 70, with a trip cost of $4,500

  • Generali Preferred- $251
  • Generali Premium- $332
  • Trawick Safe Travels Voyager- $562
  • Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector- $422

Here, Generali is definitely lower cost than the other two options. I included Generali’s top plan as well for comparison. I still do not think the saving are worth the lack of coverage.

Have pathetic experience with claim…

Have pathetic experience with claim against motor insurance policy#PBR41313. Surveyor acted like he was only expert on the earth to validate if claim was for recent accident or in past. The way he (Ankit) talked to me like meeting accident with car, it was huge crime I committed. For him my and family survival had not a single comment or enquiry. He gave biased approval on half of the damage. When contacted customer care, another pathetic experience. It took them 10 days to take second opinion from same surveyor and did shut case of my service request even after I shared phoyograph of damage denied by surveyor. What customer care could have that he/she should have taken taken 2nd opinion from other surveyor. Overall I felt I wasted 10 days doing chase on every day with not 1% satisfaction. I wanted buying policy with this company. If this is process or this is kind of hassle free process of claim then I may not suggest anyone to buy policy from this company. In today's date, time is value and relationship is mantra for any service company, and I got zero from this company in these two interactions

After having problems in April 2022…

After having problems in April 2022 with the telemedicine options provided by Generali I decided to give them another chance. I spent a couple hours just trying to get through on their main line. After finally connecting I got a rather rude agent and asked her what changes had been made to correct the problem with telemedicine. She gave me a rather generic nothing answer. When I tried phrasing it a different way she seemed rather put out. On the third try to get a real answer she just hung up on me. Next week I will cancel the policy and go to a company that cares for customers.

Absolutely a scam. I would not use the company EVER again. Had to cancel our trip due to my mother cancer and they would not grant me my refund. We canceled 30 days prior to trip. Its taken 5 months to tell me they aren't reimbursing my $1500 deposit. I will be call the Attorney Generals office and BBB. I would advise anyone who has had a negative experience to do so as well.

Avoid Generali - VACASA - VRBO

I would definitely tread carefully with this insurance program. Number 1: Read what the policy covers. It won't cover what you think and then you think you are covered but you're not and their take is: "too bad." Secondly, and I am still amazed at this. I cancelled a VRBO 45 days before the reservation. I made the mistake of booking a property managed by VACASA that keeps your 10% deposit. Because they keep the deposit when many private hosts don't, VRBO keeps your booking fee. But here's the catch. If predatory VACASA, and in turn, VRBO didn't keep their deposit and fee, Generali would cancel the travel insurance and refund me the premium. But since VACASA and VRBO are keeping the deposit and fees, this constitutes a loss and because there is a loss, Generali won't allow the travel insurance to be cancelled. They require you make a claim. However, the event that caused the cancellation is not covered so they won't pay out on the policy. Try that on again. If I wasn't penalized by VACASA keeping their deposit and VRBO keeping their fee (because VACASA kept the deposit), Generali would refund the premium. But they won't because I had a loss, even though the basis for the cancellation isn't covered under the policy. So please learn from my mistake that cost me close to $500. Don't rent anything managed by VACASA (PS their yelp reviews (from guests and property owners) say they don't take care of or clean the properties they manage) and make sure VRBO isn't going to shaft you. And then don't take out travel insurance through VRBO because it's Generali. You can always take out a travel policy later (even if just a day later), after you have had a chance to review what it covers. No sense in taking out travel insurance if the ability to collect is minimal. Update: Note stock response by insurance company. Blah, blah, blah, too bad, we got your money, have a nice day. Beware of this company

Buyer Beware

I purchased insurance for a trip my family was taking to Daniel Island. The day before the trip my Mother was admitted to the hospital in critical condition- this was the end of July. It was touch and go for the next 2 weeks if she would even make it home again. In spite of the fact that she remained in the critical care unit until September I filed the needed claim paperwork. Everything was uploaded but they came back and said the Doctors note wasn't good enough, even though we had also given them access to review her medical records as well, they stated they needed it on their Physician Statement form and closed the case; however they said if we got that form they would have everything they needed to approve the case. I got that done I emailed it as well as uploading into the portal. This was 9/22- they have not reopened my case- they have not returned any calls or emails. This is a complete scam. What a horrible experience to layer upon the horrible experience of nearly losing my mother, taking off all the time from work which negatively impacted our family's cashflow and on top of that be out of pocket on a trip we couldn't take, even though we were proactive in purchasing insurance. They must use the premiums of their customers to buy fake good reviews they have on other sites instead of paying their claims.

Really poor experience with this company and I would not recommend.

Their claims portal is not great and their customer service is even worse. It's been well over two months and my claim is still awaiting closure. Every time I call my claims representative it goes to voicemail. I provide documentation via the portal and get asked to provide the same item again. Really poor experience with this company and I would not recommend. *I have emailed as per your response and yet still no response!!

Customer Service Issues Update Nov. 22, 2022

I have not been able to contact anyone at Generali to discuss my claim. We had to cancel our Airbnb September 22, 2022 due to illness. I attempted to file a claim online, but my situation didn’t exactly fit the boxes provided so tried many times to contact a representative; could only get the automated phone system. I did receive an email response telling me to call the same 800 number. Now when I log on to complete the claim, it says I’ve already done so. I need to talk to someone but they don’t answer. I feel this is not good customer service. Update Nov 22, 2022 I am still waiting to hear from someone at Generali to address my concerns! I continue to try to reach someone at the company via phone and but only get the virtual agent who says they can not find any claim submitted by me. So I go online to submit another claim and when I log in it says “duplicate claim” again and an agent will get back to me. They have done nothing to assist me at all! I would like to remove the one star I originally gave them.

If I can give a negative star I would. We planned a trip to Sanibel in Nov. As everyone knows, hurricane Ian destroyed the island in Sept. When we booked a beach rental property in Saniel I bought travel insurance from Generali Global Assistance. After seeing in the news the destruction on the island I filed a claim after hearing back from VRBO that the house we had rented was destroyed by the hurricane. Today I received an email from them that said they will NOT cover my trip b/c they have a 15-day window clause for the trip cancellation. They are aware the house I rented in Sanibel no longer exists because of the flood. But because the flood happened on 9/27/22 and my trip is 11/21/22, my travel days are more than 15 days from the time of the flood so they will NOT honor my claim. The entire island is wiped out and can't even travel by car to get there. I didn't read any fine print regarding the 15 days when I sign up for this insurance. This 15-day clause only showed up after I filed a claim. This company is a disgrace. I am filing a complaint with the BBB next. Stay away from Generali Global Assistance!! They are SCAMMERS!

Our policies cover 30 days after a mandatory evacuation and 15 days after for interruption of road service, accommodations made inaccessible, or interruption of services at the destination such as electricity and water. We recommend reaching out to the property owner, as they do have some responsibility to refund any prepaid funds if the property cannot be used.

Easy but somewhat Challenging
