My husband and I enjoy a good beer but are far from connoisseurs. We discovered this tour online and signed up. We had a great time and our guide was very knowledgeable! Learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. I would definitely recommend it!

I loved this tour! Would definitely take another. The guides are relaxed and the vibe is casual. After a couple tastes, your group begins to feel more like friends as you travel to different breweries. The pours were generous and exploratory of the different offerings each brewery had.

Our guide was quite knowledgeable about the brewing process. He gave a great tour and was easy going and personable. Our group got along well and we all hugged bye at the end. It was a quick 3 hours, but well worth the price and the time. Plus, lots of different beers to try!

We had a blast! This was the highlight of our Asheville trip. Our guide was knowledgeable and made sure everyone on the tour got to try beers they liked. She took us to awesome spots and the group size was just right. She also gave us great recommendations for places to go after the tour.

We booked this tour when we were in Asheville for our honeymoon and it was such a fun time. Jason was an excellent tour guide! He did a fantastic job. The tour was a blast - we’d recommended this tour as a must stop on your trip! A great way to see Asheville and taste really good beers!!! 10/10 recommend!

Zebulon Artisan Ales

Bringing the hip to hipster, Zebulon brewing is only open 1-6 on Friday and Saturday creating the elusive waiting and scheduling game to beer collectors from all over the world. Living in a warehouse in the town of Weaverville, Zebulon Artisan Ales focus on Belgian, French farmhouse, and historical beers. All beers are unfiltered and often never to be seen again as there are no flagship beers consistently available. Plan accordingly while visiting this brewery.

Yes. When we started BREW-ed the plan was to maybe get a van at some point. Since then, it’s been ten years and there is so much happening downtown that we have decided not to waste time getting everyone in and out of buses and drive around looking for parking. Our tours are focused on beer and history and walking between stops allows us to share more of both with our guests.

Asheville Beer Scene Tours, Tastings, & Tips

Amazing Pubcycle Tour

Top ways to experience Asheville's craft brew scene

With more than 50 brewery locations, Asheville has so much for the beer lover or casual beer enthusiast to explore.

Here are unique ways to experience the beer scene in Asheville: Beer City USA.

Top 12 Ways to Explore the Beer Scene in Asheville, NC

Asheville brews cruise.

Get a behind-the-scenes tour of what's happening in Beer City USA. The Brews Cruise is your all-access pass and comes with your very own designated driver! You can also check out City Brew Tours with exciting behind the scene tours that begin and end in downtown Asheville.

Take a trip down to the Funkatorium, a new and unusual tasting room by the brewers at Wicked Weed . Here you can sample trendy sour and wild beers, which often have more in common with wine than with their hoppy counterparts. Order eats off a tasting menu designed specifically to pair with these bold flavors.

Move & Booze

Also known for an active outdoor scene, it’s no wonder that Asheville offers beer tastings for folks on the move. Grab some buddies and pedal your way around Asheville on the Amazing Pubcycle —part touring trolley, part bike, part party bus.

Mountain Boogie

Pisgah Brewing Company in Black Mountain jams all summer long with their outdoor concert series. Grab a Frisbee and enjoy a pint of their popular Pisgah Pale Ale under the open sky. Just be sure to leave Fido at home.

And you thought micro-brews were all the rage. Check out the nano-brews served up at Thirsty Monk . Brewing smaller batches allows more flexibility to create unique concoctions like Coconut Porter, Cherry Chocolate Stout and their Scotland TrainWreck IPA. This menu changes constantly so you never know what they'll come up with next.

Mountains to Sea

Bringing the ocean a little closer to the mountains, Oyster House Brewing Company creates quality craft beer in various styles, including their award winning "Moonstone Stout", which is a special brew where oysters (shell and all) are included as an ingredient. You won't get the actual taste of oysters from the beer, but it does provide hints of sea salt, calcium and other minerals that become part of the overall flavor. Oyster House Brewing Company (which also offers a full food menu) is located at 625 Haywood Rd in West Asheville and features a 5 bbl brewhouse, 12 taps and 2 cask beer engines. Their beers are also available exclusively downtown at The Lobster Trap , which is where the brewery was originally founded.

Feel the Burn

Visit Asheville Brewing Company in downtown Asheville for their unique Fire Escape Ale. Brewed with smoked jalapenos, this brew has offers a bit of a bite and a particularly piquant finish. Can't stand the heat? Check out their Rocket Girl Lager, a local favorite.

Movie Night

Sip on an Iron Rail IPA while watching a cult-hit flick at Wedge Brewery in the River Arts District . Bring a chair and enjoy their outdoor theater experience right by the train tracks. Or, take it indoors and catch a movie at the Asheville Pizza and Brewing in north Asheville.

Filtered Flavor

Shake it up a bit. No not your beer, just the flavor. French Broad Brewing creates unique batches of brew using a Randall filter. This gives them the ability to add roasted almonds to their brown ale or lavender to their porter.

Asheville’s South Slope , a fast-growing district located on the edge of downtown, has been dubbed by some as Asheville’s brewing district. Head down here to find great new beers at Burial Beer Co. , Twin Leaf Brewery , and Hi-Wire Brewing . Or catch up with some of Asheville’s original favorites at Green Man Brewery , known to the locals as "Dirty Jack’s."

If dive bars aren't your scene, take it up a notch, or at least up a mountain. The Grove Park Inn serves up their very own brew, The Great Gatsby Abbey. Created by Highland Brewing, you can enjoy a pint while taking in the sunset view from the Great Hall Bar.

Biltmore Beer

Biltmore is well-known for their wines, but they also serve up their own signature beers. While visiting the estate, head over to Cedric's Tavern in Antler Hill Village for the Cedric's Brown Ale with hints of toasted caramel or their Pale Ale.

Amazing Experience!

This trip was amazing! The wealth of information our Beer Guide Steve had was astounding. He knew so much about beer and Asheville. It was awesome. I strongly recommend this tour!!

Perfect Gift!

If you're looking for a gift for a beer lover, look no further. City Brew Tours did all the planning and we just showed up. They chose 3 local breweries that each had a unique ambiance as well as a solid selection of brews from sours to IPAs to stouts. Our guide, Raj, was extremely knowledgeable about the brew scene in Asheville

Amazing Asheville Craft Beer!

What a great way to spend the day sampling some of what Asheville has to offer in the craft beer market. Highly recommend City Brew Tours not only to get you around the city, but also to pick some of the best destinations to sample beer. Our tour guide Clayton was awesome as he has an extensive knowledge of beer and the Asheville area.

Great Guide, Great NC Beer, Great Time!

Our guide, Braxton, was so entertaining, kind and knowledgeable about the beers, brewing process, Asheville neighborhoods and more! We would highly recommend this tour to friends who live in Asheville and those visiting!

Wonderful Brewery Tour Experience

I purchased this tour for my husband’s birthday. What do you get a guy who has everything! A tour to experience beer! Kevin was a wealth of knowledge, the three breweries were each unique and offered a wide variety of beers. We really enjoyed this experience.

Highly Recommend!

A few weeks ago, my wife and some friends had the chance to enjoy the city brew tour with our guide Braxton. We had a great time trying out breweries new to us. Braxton was a terrific host and informative guide. We would recommend this tour to anyone looking for a night out on the town or visiting from out of town.

What is the cancellation, rescheduling, refund policy?

We operate rain, shine, and snow as long as the roads are safe and we have met our minimum to run the tour.

Changes and cancellations are free up to 72 hours before the tour. Ticket insurance allows you to make changes or cancel up to  3 hours  before the tour, and we will reschedule or reimburse you for your full tour ticket price (minus the booking fee and insurance fee).  Insurance can only be purchased when making your initial reservation, and cannot be added after the fact.

Could my tour be cancelled?

Not likely, but it is possible. In the event of severe weather or a lack of tour-goers, the tour may be canceled.

In the event of inclement weather, the decision to cancel will be made by Brew Tours Staff at least 12 hours before the start of the tour. If roads are fair and our brewery partners are open, we make every effort to run our tours as scheduled.  If you are unable to travel due to inclement weather, please give us a call at 828-900-2337 to discuss your options. We will not be able to issue full refunds without the purchase of ticket insurance, but we may be able to find you another tour option in the future.

What is your tour minimum?

In order for us to run a tour, we need a minimum of 2 participants.

Where do your tours pick up?

Our pick up spot is at the Renaissance Asheville Downtown Hotel , located at 31 Woodfin St., Asheville, NC. The van will depart right at the time listed, so recommend arriving 15 minutes early to allow for time to check-in! Bear in mind we do not have a storefront.

Why do I have to wear closed-toed shoes?

All guests must wear closed-toe shoes to participate in the tour. This is a safety precaution that the breweries themselves are required to enforce, therefore, no exceptions can be made. If you are taking a tour during the summer months, please plan accordingly.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes, we can accommodate most dietary restrictions. Please inform us regarding the nature of your restrictions when booking your tour!

A note on gluten: Typically, beer is not gluten-free. Some of our tour stops do from time to time offer gluten-free options, however, we cannot guarantee their availability. Gluten-free guests should consider our non-drinker ticket, so they can purchase cider or gluten-free beer when available.

Am I able to choose all of the beers on my tour?

No need to worry about choosing your beers at each stop. You’ll receive a handpicked selection of local craft beer curated by our beer expert guides.

Do you have gift certificates?

Yes! You can purchase a specific tour gift voucher, or select a dollar amount to give. Check out our Gift Certificates page for more information.

For hotel recommendations that are near the tour pick up location, please visit our Hotel Accommodations page.

What is the difference between the public and private tour?

We offer 2 different public tours which you can read more about here . Because private tours are personalized, there is a sliding scale of differences between them vs. public tours. Generally, we suggest private tours for corporate events, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and other groups of over 10 guests. You can read more about our private tours here .

I paid for my booking, but have not received a confirmation email.

If you have not received an email from us, be sure to check your spam folder. Our emails are automated and will sometimes slip past your inbox. If it is not in spam, you can reach out to us by phone 828-900-2337  or email [email protected] , and we will happily send you your confirmation again.

What is included in the confirmation email?

The details of your reservation, the pick up and drop off location for the tour, the tour itinerary, and information regarding our policies.

Where can I park?

We do not recommend driving to our tours. Whenever possible, please use a car service or public transportation to get to your pick up spot. If you must drive, parking is available at the Renaissance Asheville Downtown Hotel for $22 a day or at the College Street Parking Deck for $5 every 4 hours.

Can I reschedule my tour date?

Do I need to print out my confirmation email/how do I print my ticket?

You can simply show up to the pickup spot 10 minutes early, with a valid form of ID and closed-toed shoes. You do not need a physical ticket or to print out your confirmation email, just give your name to the guide!

Is the tour wheelchair accessible?

Many of our stops are wheelchair accessible. However, our seated passenger vans can only accommodate folding wheelchairs on private tours.

Can someone under 21 attend?

You must be 21 or older and show proper identification in order to participate in our tour, even if you’ve purchased a non-drinker ticket.

Beer City, USA: A Self-Guided Brewery Tour of Asheville, NC

When I first read about Asheville, North Carolina having the most breweries per capita of any city in the United States, you bet your behind that I started packing my bags. I don’t really drink too much anymore due to the fact that my body has aged so much more rapidly than my naïve little mind, and so a margarita with dinner is enough to give me a hangover well into the next afternoon. A shot of tequila is enough to make me immediately blow chunks all over the floor and then turn in for the night. Two glasses of wine is enough to make me cry by myself in the corner as I contemplate all the most devastating things in life and wonder why no one loves me.

Bottom line: I am not that fun when I drink. In a way I feel robbed of my youth, being this way, but I’ve accepted this is who I am. The only thing I can drink without guaranteed disastrous repercussions, and the one thing I really, truly love to drink, is beer.

But let’s be real. You are not here reading this post because you want to know about what a loser I am. You’re here because you want to hit as many breweries as possible in one afternoon in Asheville.

My sister Meredith and I spent about 10 hours hopping from brewery to brewery, and there were aspects that we enjoyed about each. The air was cold and crisp outside, and there was no better way to spend an afternoon than cozying up with some tasty beers and enjoying Asheville’s alternative, bohemian culture, even if we’re not cool enough to fit into it.

Asheville brewery tour

A huge number of Asheville’s breweries are within blocks of each other in the South Slope District, so here is the route we took and our favorite things about each brewery.

Disclaimer: though I find beer delicious, I am not a beer expert, so I won’t be speaking pompously of the beer’s aromas, amount of head, or flavor balance because I don’t know a goddamn thing and don’t really care to.

  Burial Beer Company

40 collier ave, asheville, nc 28801.

beer tour asheville nc

Brewery atmosphere:  Burial was the first brewery we stopped into and it certainly set the bar high. It is one of the highest rated breweries in North Carolina, so it does get a little crowded, but you won’t even really care with the rustic interior and the good, hipster vibes. Expect to see a few dogs wandering around as well (huge thumbs up to all of Asheville, since I saw a dog or two in several of the breweries we went to. Now if we can just get the rest of the country to get on board). Burial is laid back, offers amazing southern food right next door, and is a truly unique spot to throw back your first beer. Plus, all the beer cans have really cool gothic art on them, and I am all about little details like this.

Beer to try: The Prayer, best enjoyed by beer drinkers who like Belgian style pale ales with tart, apricoty, and somewhat peppery flavors.

Price:  Expect a beer to be around $6-7.

Bottom line:          If you only go to one brewery in Asheville, let this be the one.

  Green Man Brewery

27 buxton ave, asheville, nc 28801.

beer tour asheville nc

Brewery atmosphere:  This place was very clean and very modern. It had two levels, with a bar on each level, and a ton of brewing equipment on the first. What is brewing equipment even called? Silver barrel beer things? The walls were painted a calming green, and there were boxes of trivia games upstairs that Meredith and I utilized for about an hour even though we are both horrifically bad at trivia and wildly guessed most of the answers.

Beer to try: Tart Berry Berliner Weisse, best enjoyed by beer drinkers who like sour and fruity beers with a weird violet hue.

Price:  A pint runs around $5.

Bottom Line:          The perfect place for an afternoon beer.

  Twin Leaf Brewery

144 coxe ave, asheville, nc 28801.

beer tour asheville nc

Brewery atmosphere:  Twin Leaf was the first brewery we visited that was crowded as fuxk. Mid-afternoon is when the droves of thirsty day drinkers start to swarm the breweries, so be prepared for a long line here. However, the bartenders were incredibly friendly and worked as quickly as possible to get everyone served. There are long, communal tables to sit and drink with friends old and new, industrial decor, as well as ping pong tables and other games along the side. Beer, conversation, and plenty of activities, so you can’t go wrong.

Beer to try:  Dark Matter Oatmeal Stout, best enjoyed by beer drinkers who like rich, fuller-bodied beers with flavors of chocolate, molasses, and coffee.

Price:  A pint runs around $5-6.

Bottom Line:        Probably the cutest brewery we visited, and the easiest to hang out in FOR HOURS (yeah, we were there for hours).

  The Funkatorium

147 coxe ave, asheville, nc 28801.

beer tour asheville nc

Brewery atmosphere:  Funkatorium is actually owned by Wicked Weed, and is the East Coast’s first “sour and funky beer dedicated taproom.” Do I know what that means? Heck no, but it does sound like a good reason to check it out. There is a smaller, rustic bar area in front with a huge warehouse of barrels in the back, as well as a stage which I assume is for live music but not at the time we were there (would have been DOPE to hear some live music in a warehouse surrounded by beer barrels, though). Very cool place; its only downfall was that we had to wait outside for about 15 minutes before being allowed in because they were at capacity, but once we went inside it didn’t seem crowded at all.

Beer to try:  Genesis Blonde Sour, best enjoyed by beer drinkers who like fresh, fruity sours, bursting with flavors of pineapple, mango, papaya, and guava. Sour Patch Kids lovers welcome. I went through a phase recently where I ate 5 bags of Sour Patch Kids a week and it was horrible. Not that that is relevant to anyone but my mother, who loves me.

Price:  Each special sour beer is about $5.

Bottom Line:        Really, really, really good beer.

  Hi-Wire Brewing

197 hilliard ave, asheville, nc 28801.

beer tour asheville nc

Brewery atmosphere:  Out of all the breweries, this one was my least favorite. I hate to talk bad about anyone or anything (unless it’s in the privacy of my house and no one except my friends and family can hear me, then I am seriously all about it), but I have to be honest. It was very dark inside and extremely loud, and we were not able to find a place to sit. It felt less like a funky, sophisticated brewery and more like a neighborhood dive bar with some barrels in the back. Not that there’s anything wrong with that necessarily . We just didn’t stay for too long. I also think at this point we were starving and tired and in need of some mid-brewery-crawl snacks.

Beer to try:  Really Good Breakfast, best enjoyed by beer drinkers who like a heavier, darker stout. I think I would have really enjoyed sipping on this beer had I not been so in need of food that any heavy beer was bound to make my delicate ass feel like barfing.

Price:  A beer from the tap runs at about $5.

Bottom Line:          At least it is dog friendly, and has some live music.

  Asheville Brewing Company

77 coxe ave, asheville, nc 28801.

beer tour asheville nc

Brewery atmosphere:  The Asheville Brewing Company is home to some award-winning beers and is the “most Googled brewery in North Carolina,” according to their website. Who knows if that is true, or if it is for any other reason other than the fact that it has both “Asheville” and “brewing” in its name. This was a great next stop for us, because the beer was making our stomachs start to turn and we needed something to eat. There are three locations, but the one we went to in the South Slope District is their actual brewpub, where all the brewing equipment is held. Since the brewing equipment is all behind the scenes, you need a tour to see it, so this brewery had a restaurant feel to it more than the others. It was really lively and welcoming inside, even if we did have to wait for a table to get any service.

Beer to try:  Perfect Day IPA, best enjoyed by beer drinkers who like citrusy and floral hops. This one was recommended to me by the lovely bartender whose name escapes me but who was the sweetest and coolest woman on the face of this planet.

Price:  Beers are about $5-6.

Bottom Line:          This brewery had the friendliest staff we came across, and lots and lots of hot and tasty apps.

  Bhramari Brewing Company

101 s lexington ave, asheville, nc 28801.

beer tour asheville nc

Brewery atmosphere:  Bhramari is a large, newer brewery with several different rooms, as well as an outside patio. The inside is extra hipster and extra chill, and while it was crowded with a lot of people as we stumbled into a booth, the vibes never strayed from highly laid-back and relaxing. The creative and funky decor and beers made for a very enjoyable time. At this point we were about ready to pass out from all the alcohol and we decided to split a lighter beer, which was a nice change of pace from some of the heavier ones we had been drinking.

Beer to try:  Curb Appeal, best enjoyed by beer drinkers who like simple, light, and fresh American lagers.

Price: A pint is about $5.

Bottom Line:          Funky and fun, and I imagine it would have been an excellent spot for day drinking outside.

  Wicked Weed Brewing

91 biltmore ave, asheville, nc 28801.

beer tour asheville nc

Brewery atmosphere:  Ah, yes, our final stop on our seemingly endless brewery tour. How is it possible that we only walked for 10 cumulative minutes and saw so many places?? Drank so much?? Spent SO MUCH MONEY?? This is the main location for Wicked Weed brewery, Funkatorium being its other location down the street. It is one of the more popular and more famous breweries in town, so it is often packed. It is loud inside at night, but it is very open so the vibe is actually a lot of fun as opposed to overwhelming and suffocating. There’s also a fire pit outside and plenty of space to hang out if the weather is nice. It was literally snowing while we were there and we sprinted from brewery to brewery to minimize our time in the cold, so we definitely did not get to enjoy that.

Beer to try:  Lunatic Blonde, best enjoyed by beer drinkers who like yeasty, fruity, and spicy blondes with a crisp feel to it.

Price:  Beers are about $4-5.

Bottom Line:          Tons of fun and full of people, and a definite must for any brewery crawl if for nothing else than for its notoriety.

To me a day like the one Meredith and I had is not really about being wasted and making idiots out of ourselves. It’s not even necessarily about the beer. It’s about the experience. Meredith is not a huge beer drinker, but she still enjoyed the unique character of each establishment and was always able to find something she liked (hello, these are  breweries . They specialize in making tons of different beers, and lots of them have ciders too!).

You’d be remiss to miss an opportunity to hit at least a couple of Asheville’s breweries on your visit. They don’t call this town Beer City, USA for nothing!

Make a Splash with a Canoe Brewery Tour in Asheville!

Recipe for a perfect day: Floating down an ancient river, cooling your toes in the water, laughing with good friends… all within reach of award-winning breweries serving up fresh craft beverages and tasty treats.

We’ll paddle up to a variety of Asheville’s best breweries, eateries, funky riverside bars, and wading pools. Each trip will vary based on the weather, what is open, and what the folks in your group enjoy most. Most trips include two breweries, a couple of eating options, and depending on the day, a bonus brewery or winery. Non-drinkers will have plenty of sight-seeing options nearby as well.

We require a four person minimum.

  • Our trips start and end at different places. We do not offer transportation to and from the two locations. We start the trip at 220 Hominy Creek Rd at Hominy Creek River Park. We are in the small parking lot outside the gates of French Broad Outfitters. If you have passed through the gates, you have gone too far. If you experience a traffic line when you are almost at the meeting spot it means you are in the right place😊 It’s the county trash transfer station. Our put in is just after it.
  • We end at New Belgium Brewery at Craven St.
  • It is a 4 mile walk along the bike path along the river or 10 minute Uber/Lyft ride. We highly recommend waiting until you are safe to drive or hail a rideshare. Your vehicle is also safe to leave overnight at either location. If you have 2 vehicles, then you can set your own shuttle easily. It’s a 10 minute drive between the 2 spots.
  • Please arrive at Hominy Creek 15 minutes prior to scheduled departure time. The most efficient process is to drive a car to the meeting spot. Take the raft tour to New Belgium Brewery and retrieve your car when safe to do so.

Asheville's beer community embraces other craft beverage styles, new events on horizon

beer tour asheville nc

ASHEVILLE - Craft beverage producers are finding strength in collaboration and innovation in a constantly changing industry climate.

Consumer and tourism trends have been motivators for local beverage businesses to launch new events and enhance experiences to bring imbibers back to the taprooms.

“It is a difficult time for the brewing and tourism industry in Asheville. We have seen a decrease of folks visiting taprooms, both community members and tourists,” said Karis Roberts, executive director of the Asheville Brewers Alliance, an organization that promotes and supports its members across Western North Carolina.

Roberts said the local brewing community has seen a lot of closures and restructuring but is resilient and dedicated to its craft. And although Asheville's earned the “Beer City” moniker, there's more going on.

Roberts said there is growth happening, like the expansion of existing taprooms, new taprooms opening in and out of the city, and product development. Some businesses have launched and widened distribution, collaborating with other breweries, organizations and businesses to create custom products. And many are experimenting with new styles and zero-proof and gluten-free options, like natural wines, hard cider and seltzer, hop-infused water and nonalcoholic beer.

“We think ‘Beer City’ and think that’s all that we have to offer but there’s so much creativity and pivoting ― we’re not all just drinking beer anymore,” Robert said.

This year, two event series will aid the charge to bring craft beverage producers and the community together, Beers with Buds: An N.C. Beer Gathering and Asheville Beer Week.

Here’s what to know about the new and returning celebrations, plus more beverage festivals and events coming up in 2024.

Beer with Buds

Beers with Buds: An N.C. Beer Gathering will debut 7- 10 p.m. March 29 at The Mule, Devil's Foot Beverage Co.’s taproom at 131 Sweeten Creek Road.

Ten craft breweries across North Carolina have been invited to serve samples of their beers.

“Rather than approaching it as a beer festival, we wanted to step away from the overcrowded, overindulgence driven. … We want to bring it to a level where people could actually taste the beer that’s in front of them and have a relationship with the craft and learn more about the brand," said Miranda Michaels, The Mule’s events and tasting room manager.

The North Carolina Beer Gathering brewery guest list features:

  • Oden Brewing, Greensboro
  • Fonta Flora Brewery, Morganton
  • Wilmington Brewing, Wilmington
  • New Anthem Beer Project, Wilmington
  • Heist Brewery, Charlotte
  • Town Brewing Co, Charlotte
  • HopFly Brewing Co, Charlotte
  • Wooden Robot Brewery, Charlotte
  • Brewery Bhavana, Raleigh
  • Bond Brothers Beer Company, Cary

Tickets are $40 and include unlimited tastings of 30 beer styles and a souvenir glass. Guests must be ages 21 and up for the tastings but the event is open to all ages. Purchase tickets at devilsfootbrew.com .

Retail products and merchandise available for sale. Food will be available for purchase on-site, and The Mule’s full bar will be open.

Michaels said the event kicks off a recurring series in August, September and October, focused on Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina breweries where the company is expanding its footprint.

Devil’s Foot was founded as a nonalcoholic beverage producer, but as the company continues to grow, its portfolio has steadily diversified in styles and alcoholic offerings to include products like the zero-proof and Friend of the Devil canned cocktails lines that meld the soda company’s farm-fresh ingredients with brewers and distillers’ products.

Michaels said it’s a reason the beverage business, which doesn’t brew beer, is hosting a beer-centric event series.

“Craft beverage is craft beverage whether it’s a craft soda, wine or beer,” Michael said. “It’s crossing over the line so we can continue to co-create and support each other as a craft beverage community and not really as ‘we’re nonalcoholic and you make alcoholic products.’ It’s removing the competition and bringing in more camaraderie.”

AVL Beer Week 2024

Asheville Brewers Alliance’s 13th annual Asheville Beer Week will return with 10 days of entertaining, educational and engaging programming, uniting the community, artists and beverage industry professionals, May 16-26 at various locations.

AVL Beer Week, designed to promote tourism and the beverage industry across Western North Carolina, will feature craft beer, ginger beer, cider and other craft beverage producers from the area.

“The craft beverage folks are always working on innovation and ways they can pivot when things get hard,” Roberts said. “I’ve noticed so much tenacity from the brewing industry community. As things progress, I’m hoping to ignite more passion for the industry and bring back Asheville Beer Week this year.”

The schedule includes an artist panel to discuss label designs, a Women in Brewing panel discussion with interviews of women working in the industry in roles from marketing to accounting to leadership, and a “No Beer Here” event where nonbeer craft beverages will be offered.

On May 24, Craft Beverage Expo will include educational seminars on topics like finance and operations, business leadership and technical brewing, in partnership with the N.C. Craft Brewers Guild, plus a special tasting experience.

On May 25, the Beer City 20k Relay will kick off with teams racing through the city.

Events are open to the public, including the Craft Beverage Expo, and many events are family-friendly and free.

Roberts said ticketed events were priced low to maintain accessibility and the schedule and tickets will be available soon at avlbeerweek.com .

More beverage festivals and events coming up in 2024:

  • June 22. Carolina CiderFest at Urban Orchard Cider Co.-South Slope.
  • Aug. 1-4. AVL Fest, presented by Wicked Weed Brewing and Worthwhile Sounds, at various locations.
  • Oct. 12. Burnpile at Burial Beer Co.-Forestry Camp.

The World’s Top 10 Beer Destinations for 2024

It’s safe to say that the craft beer boom has now reached nearly every corner of the globe. But with experimental and innovative releases coming from countless producers every year, determining which cities are worth a beer-inspired visit is no small feat — especially if you’ve already ticked off well-known suds hubs like Brussels and Munich or San Diego and Asheville.

This year’s list of the best beer destinations recognizes cities with up-and-coming craft scenes, many of which have exploded in recent years. Additionally, it celebrates historic and iconic beer cities with new and improved attractions set to welcome visitors for the first time.

From strolling through the streets of the “Paris of South America” to motorbike brewery tours in Vietnam, here are the 10 best beer destinations for 2024.

10. Johannesburg, South Africa

Johannesburg, South Africa is one of the top beer destinations for 2024.

Defined by decades of mass production, craft brewing in South Africa is still relatively nascent, with the first craft outfit, Mitchell’s Brewery, opening in Knysna in 1983. Come 2008, the number of craft operations across the country had grown to 20, but now that number is well over 200, with many residing in Johannesburg, South Africa’s third-largest city.

One of Joburg’s most popular destinations for beer drinkers is Mad Giant Brewery , which sprung up as a garage operation in 2014. Since then, the brewery has expanded significantly, moving into its current downtown residence in August 2016. Head to the taproom for crisp, low-ABV brews marked by notes of tropical fruits and citrus.

9. Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece is one of the top beer destinations for 2024.

Beer production in Athens dates back to 3300 B.C. And while the modern era has been mostly defined by mass-produced lagers from companies like AB-InBev and the Heineken Company, finding quality craft beer is getting easier and easier, much as it is to encounter a world-class cocktail .

Production on the current site of Athineo Microbrewery , in the Rouf neighborhood, stretches back to 1965, when Athenian Brewery, now owned by Heineken, started brewing Amstel. By 2015, that production had shifted to other parts of the country, and Athenian reimagined the space as Athineos, a microbrewery, museum, and laboratory. While not “craft” in the independently owned sense of the term often favored stateside, the brewery places an emphasis on small, experimental batches, with many made using 100 percent Greek barley. After a refreshment, don’t leave without checking out the space’s museum, which outlines the history of beer production from ancient Babylonia to present day.

Next up, and just a short walk from the Acropolis, is Strange Brew . The bottleshop and taproom features 10 handles charged with proprietary pours (brewed “nomadically” at multiple facilities around the country), as well as a rotating selection of local guest beers. Strange Brew’s flagship, the Jasmine IPA, is a must-try, offering aromatic tropical fruits and relaxing jasmine notes.

If sampling as many local beers as possible is a priority, fire up Untapp’d and check in to Barley Cargo . The beer hall, decorated with beer-stacked open crates, serves over 350 styles from over 140 Greek microbreweries, as well as dozens of international producers. If hunger strikes, a convenient tasting menu has been designed to pair perfectly with a beer in hand.

8. Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires, Argentina is one of the top beer destinations for 2024.

Beloved for its wide stretching boulevards, regal cultural institutions, and world-class architecture, Buenos Aires is well deserving of its nickname, the “Paris of South America.” And while Argentina may be better known for wine, the country has a craft beer scene that’s blossomed impressively over the past two decades. In 2010, there were roughly 70 breweries scattered across the country. Now, there are thousands and the industry is expected to continue growing by nearly 10 percent year-over-year until 2028.

Among the sea of large-scale domestic producers that line the shelves of beer retailers in the city, visitors can also indulge in craft offerings at the city’s numerous breweries, microbreweries, and tasting rooms. At Bierlife , which occupies a rustic, colonial-era former home in San Telmo — the city’s oldest neighborhood — guests can choose from 50-plus taps, then enjoy their pours in the bar’s shaded biergarten.

Over in the Colegiales neighborhood, Strange Brewing dishes out dozens of experimental brews, ranging from sour ales with strawberry and coconut, to Argentine interpretations of New England IPAs, oatmeal stouts, and light lagers. For relaxation, don’t miss out on Tēdelūpulo , Argentina’s first beer spa, offering treatments like malt and hop oil massages as well as blind beer tastings.

7. Minneapolis, Minn., United States

Minneapolis, Minn., United States is one of the top beer destinations for 2024.

The American Midwest is practically synonymous with beer production, led by cities like Milwaukee and Chicago. But tucked away in Minneapolis are over 40 craft breweries, representing approximately a quarter of Minnesota’s total producers, with each pushing to make brewing a more innovative and creative space.

Leading the charge is Modist Brewing and head brewer Kiegan Knee, who received a nod from VinePair last year for his experimental brewing techniques. In a custom-built brewhouse, Knee conceives beers from a singular desired flavor, leading to recipes like Pineapple Passionfruit Fruited Sours, Double Marshmallow & Vanilla Dark Lagers, and a number of hemp-based seltzers.

A short 10-minute drive leads to Fair State Brewing Cooperative , the first cooperatively owned brewery in Minnesota, and only the third to open in the United States. Founded by Evan Sallee, Niko Tonks, and Matt Hauck, guests are able to buy into Fair State’s Member-Owner Program , which allows for beer lovers to help design recipes, pick berries for brews, and volunteer to support the brewery. To date, the brewery has put forth creations such as Bonk City, a double IPA made with Columbus Cryo hops, and Biggie Jumbo, a double stout with rich chocolate notes.

If you’re not tied to a summer excursion, the annual April Minnesota Craft Beer Festival typically serves more than 400 brews from over 100 producers in the state. Get your tickets soon — in the past, every festival has sold out.

6. Queenstown, New Zealand

Queenstown, New Zealand is one of the top beer destinations for 2024.

With over 200 breweries for just 5 million people, there’s no shortage of great beer in New Zealand. And with the highest concentration of bars and restaurants in the country — and quite a few breweries of its own — quality craft beer abounds in Queenstown, on the nation’s South Island.

Drinking with a view seldom comes close to the scenes found at Canyon Brewing , with an outdoor beer garden situated on the edge of — as the name suggests — a canyon. While savoring the sight, sip on a hazy IPA or the Farm Hand Saison, made with homegrown pilsner malt, honey, and foraged elderflower. The brewery’s restaurant defies culinary categorization, with dishes ranging from wood-fired edamame beans with Korean chili powder to beef rump steak with chimichurri butter.

For über-local brews, Cargo Brewery produces a collection of fresh-hop beers using the yields from an on-site hop farm, which are sold at the cellar door and at brewery events. Cargo Brewery also produces lagers, pilsners, IPAs, and ales, and this year plans to open a beer hall that will serve as an events space and production venue for beer, spirits, and non-alcoholic drinks.

To hit as many spots as possible without the hassle of planning, turn to Queenstown Beer Tours , hosted by Kiwi-born Lewis Benseman, who was raised in the city. The five-hour Craft Beer Brewery Tour includes three stops, an interactive brewery tour, and 13 tastings. For an additional culinary aspect, consider the Craft Beer Brewery and Food Tour; while the Private Brewers Day Out may be more your speed if you’re looking to sample some gin and sake as well.

5. Albuquerque, N.M., United States

Albuquerque, N.M., United States is one of the top beer destinations for 2024.

Since Santa Fe Brewing opened its doors in 1988, craft brewing has taken off in New Mexico, with over 40 establishments now operational in Albuquerque. With its original location some 65 miles away, Santa Fe Brewing expanded to the city in 2015. Saddle up to its bar in Green Jeans Food Hall, the city’s original shipping-container marketplace, for hazy IPAs to Mexican-style lagers and even an Imperial Java Stout.

Bow & Arrow Brewing Co. , the first Native American, woman-owned brewery in the United States, delivers some of the best beer to be found in the city. Co-founded by Shyla Sheppard and Missy Begay, Bow & Arrow rotates its beer offerings seasonally. Typical selections include malt-forward, barrel-aged imperial stouts, and dry-hopped farmhouse ales that spend extended periods in cask. The quality on display at Bow & Arrow earned the brewery a nod from the James Beard Foundation in January 2024 as a semi-finalist for “Outstanding Bar.”

For history buffs, Canteen Brewhouse holds the distinction of Albuquerque’s longest continually operating brewery, while Gravity Bound Brewing Company leads on the sustainability front as the city’s most eco-friendly producer.

4. Charlotte, N.C., United States

Charlotte, N.C., United States is one of the best beer destinations for 2024.

Following the outbreak of Covid-19, Charlotte experienced an influx of new residents. According to CLT Alliance , a Charlotte-based business networking company, 113 people moved to the greater Charlotte area everyday from mid-2021 to mid-2022. And while the city plays younger sibling to Asheville and Raleigh, Charlotte’s craft beer scene is thriving, with over 70 breweries in the region.

NoDa Brewing Company , one of the city’s original craft outposts, opened in 2011 and has since expanded to a second location. Now it even has an outpost in the city’s airport. At the O.G. location , 12 year-round releases are featured alongside a collection of seasonal and limited-time brews. Over at NoDa Brewing Company, the newer of the two, 16 brews pour from the taps year-round joined by rotating seasonal selections. Since it’s North Carolina, sampling Cheerwine Ale — a wheat ale made with the state’s favorite soda brand — is a must.

For a more experimental experience, stop in for a pint at Pilot Brewing Company, a small-batch nano-brewery with no flagship beers and no core ranges. The team instead prefers to rotate selections as often as possible, currently offering 14 proprietary and two “co-Pilot” beers; two non-alcoholic brews; four ciders; and two hard seltzers. Pilot Brewing Company was also named the 1023 North Carolina Brewery of the Year at the NC Brewers Cup Competition.

3. Hanoi, Vietnam

Hanoi, Vietnam is one of the best beer destinations for 2024.

Beer production in Vietnam dates back to the 19th century, and the nation now consistently ranks in the top 10 beer-consuming countries worldwide. While labels like Saigon Beer and Hanoi Beer occupy most of the market, a vibrant craft scene is flourishing in Hanoi, mostly led by Furbrew .

Opened in 2016, it was the city’s first independent craft brewery, originally located in The 100 Garden, a beer garden located in the Tây Ho District. Since then, Furbrew’s expanded to a 1,000-liter brewhouse, with selections spanning some 20 taplines, and cans and bottles also on offer. For a wider selection, return to The 100 Garden, which supplements Furbrew beers with a selection of other Vietnamese brews flowing through 31 taps.

At Standing Bar, located on Truc Bach Lake in the city’s Old Quarter, 19 taps rotate brews from across Vietnam alongside a food menu that changes daily. Hop in the car and head 15 minutes north to enjoy one of 20 beers on tap at Turtle Lake Brewing Company, while listening to live music along Tay Ho lake.

It wouldn’t be a trip to Vietnam without a ride on the back of a motorbike. The Hanoi Beer Tour combines that experience with a five-hour guided tour, complete with food and a history and culture lesson on Hanoi.

No matter what, drinking bia hoi is a must in the city. While not “craft,” the daily-brewed and briefly matured brew is the backbone of beer consumption in the city, delivered to suppliers daily and typically served in a frosted glass with large chunks of ice.

2. Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is one of the top beer destinations for 2024.

British Columbia’s booming beer scene boasts some 250 craft breweries — most of which opened their doors in the last 10 years, with approximately 70 calling Vancouver home.

The highest concentration of breweries and brewpubs can be found on the east side of the city, affectionately nicknamed “Yeast Van.” The industrial area, which runs from Powell Street to Commercial Drive, contains around 15 breweries, the first of which — Storm Brewing — opened in the 1990s. At Parallel 49 Brewing, Yeast Vancouver’s largest brewery, enjoy the plethora of urban street art while sipping one of the more than 10 brews offered. Fancy visiting as many breweries as possible in the area? Join the Yeast Vancouver Ale Trail on a four-day exploration through the city’s beer scene.

Outside of Yeast Vancouver, no visit to the city is complete without a trip to Steamworks Brewing, the only steam-operated brewery in Canada. If you’re traveling with others who don’t share the same affinity for beer, hit up the Vancouver Urban Winery which shares a space with the Belgard Kitchen , a restaurant spotlighting Canadian ingredients alongside a selection of wine, cocktails, and, of course, draft beer.

1. London, England, United Kingdom

London, England, United Kingdom is one of the best beer destinations for 2024.

With its trademark pub culture, London seems like an obvious beer destination, but the city has never allowed itself to get comfortable, and continually pushes the boundaries of what it means to brew great beer. And with over 100 commercial breweries operating in the city — and more pubs than anyone could check out in one visit — there’s certainly no shortage of suds.

To break from the beaten tourist path, head to southeast London for a galavant down the Bermondsey Beer Mile. The stretch of road (that’s actually closer to two miles long) is rife with breweries, bars, and bottle shops, all nestled in former railway arches. Expect anything from traditional English ales — at Southwark Brewing , they’re served straight out of the cask — to stouts, IPAs, and even some honey-based brews. Need a break from beer? Kanpai, the U.K.’s first sake brewery and taproom, is located along the strip and serves 10 sakes on tap alongside a collection of Kanpai collaboration beers. Pro tip: Saturdays are the best day to visit the “mile,” as most of the breweries and pubs open at the same time.

Starting this year, stout drinkers will no longer have to venture up to Dublin for an “official” pint of Guinness. Set to open late 2024 in Covent Garden, Guinness at Old Brewer’s Yard is bringing production back to a part of the city where brewing dates back to 1722. Diageo, the brand’s parent company, plans for the microbrewery to focus on limited-edition beers while offering visitors a guided tour of the premises. Additionally, the 50,000-square-foot operation is set to become the southern U.K. hub for “Learning for Life Bartending and Hospitality,” Diageo’s training program. Eventually, 100 London-based students will graduate from the program annually.

While the English capital’s summer weather is notoriously unreliable, the London Beer Festival is a guaranteed August fixture, giving guests the chance to sample over 800 beers from more than 100 breweries. Located on Tobacco Dock in Wapping, approximately 16,000 drinkers flock to the festival each year for brews, cocktails, spirits, wine, and vibrant live music. Remember to pack that umbrella, just in case!
