(Sri Lanka & Maldives 14 Itinerary/2week travel guide)

In this post, I will outline my DIY travel guide to two weeks in both Sri Lanka & the Maldives! Two Contrasting places which should be on your bucket list! You can tailor this trip to suit your needs and even do two weeks or more in each destination.

Sri Lanka: One Week Itinerary

Best time to visit sri lanka.

Sri Lanka has a tropical asian climate, so is warm at any time throughout the year. However, they do have monsoons which are active during different times of the year & on different parts of the island.

The best time to visit Sri Lankas is between  December & Feb/March.  This is the best time  if you plan on visiting the  west coast or south west of Sri Lanka.

The best time to visit the east coast is between April-September.

Which airport do I fly into?

Bandaranaike International  Airport  at  Katunayake , is the main International  Airport  in  Sri  Lanka. This airport is located 30km to the north of Sri Lankas Capital city, Colombo.

(Airport code CMB)

Do i need a Visa to travel to Sri Lanka?

Yes, you will need a visa to travel to Sri Lanka. I suggest registering  online  then simply collecting it from the airport when you arrive in Sri Lanka. Its quite a simple process just fill out the form online and pay the fee of $35 USD. Then they will send you a notification email to tell you if you have been approved.

I got my approval by the next morning, but i suggest you do this a couple weeks in advance to be on the safe side.

Sri Lanka one week Itinerary:

  • Kandy Nuwara Eliya

Looping round to finish back in Colombo.

Day 1: Colombo

Getting from sri lanka airport (bandaranaike) to colombo.

Bandaranaike Airport to Colombo is 30km away with taxis and express buses running regularly. This can cost you anywhere from $0.70 to $20 depending upon you mode of transport and will take approximately 30-45 mins.

Taxi  - The Taxis have air conditioning and cost between $15-$20 USD. (2600LKR-3600)

Bus -  The Bus is definitely the most cost effective at just $0.70 (125LKR& surprisingly comfortable option as it has AC. To catch it, head just across from the terminal and catch bus number 187-E3

Colombo-SRi Lanka-one week itinerary

Colombo is an often overlooked city of which many people tend to pass through but to be honest there is so many great local sights & temples to see! As alot of the attractions/temples are spread out you will have to hop on one of the many Tuk Tuks especially if your here for just one day.

It can get pretty hot during the morning, so i suggest doing your main sightseeing during the afternoon. Like any major tourist city, be aware of scammers offering to "show you the way".

Attractions to see:

Gangaramaya temple & beira lake.

Gangaramaya Temple is a fantastic buddhist temple, with a unique architecture & everything from a gigantic buddha in the centre to one of the smallest buddha statues in the world.

Insider Tip:

Make sure you have spare change for the entrance fee which is 200 LKR, approx $1 USD)

Seema Malaka Temple

Located nearby to Gangaramaya temple is the golden buddha cladded Seema Malaka temple! Located over Beira Lake the temple is split into three platforms connected by small bridges.

trip a deal maldives and sri lanka

Afterwards but sure to take a moment to admire the stunning Beira Lake.

Day 2: Dambulla & Safari at Minneriya National Park

Including the iconic Dambulla & a Safari in  Minneriya National Park   in just one day can be a real challenge!

There is 100km (60 miles) between colombo at Habarana so this was definitely my busiest day with lots of traveling. So if you have time do it over two days!  Having said that, it stills possible to do in one day, just make sure you leave Colombo early.

On the way to Habarana, you have to stop at Dambulla Cave temple! A UNESCO word heritage site featuring a maze of fresco covered caves, the largest & most well preserved in Sri Lanka!

Also called the golden temple of Dambulla, the temples contain 153 buddha statues, in addition to Sri Lankan kings, gods & goddesses! There is a massive 80 caves in the area, but the 3 main ones include:

Cave of the Divine King

Highlights include at massive 14-meter statue of the Buddha!

trip a deal maldives and sri lanka

Cave of the Great Kings

Like something form Indiana Jones, this is the largest Cave and a magical place featuring statues of gods and of course kings! The cave measures 52m from east to west, and 23m from the entrance to the back.

Great New Monastery

This has some amazing ceiling and wall paintings in the Kandy style .

Safari at Minneriya National Park

After immersing yourself in the caves head back out to daylight, to Minneriya National Park near Habaran city. At Minneriya you can enjoy an amazing Safari.

Minneriya National Park, was originally declared a wildlife sanctuary back in 1938 and you can see why! With seasonal groups of elephants and large flocks of tropical birds.

wiki[/caption]

The main elephant gathering occurs between September & October when over 350 elephants flock to the dried out Minneriya lake. The area is around 5 & half hours from Columbo . Close by you can find the ruined monasteries and royal palaces of Polonnaruwa!

You can also visit Kadulla National Park nearby, sometimes the Elephants migrate over from Minneriya National Park. So ask you guide which would be better when you visit.

Where to Stay?

For our recommended accommodation choices in  Dambulla  or  Habaran  follow the links to our special hotels.com search, we always use them when traveling.

Day 3: Hike up Sigirya Rock

Sigirya is rock is the most iconic rock formation in Sri Lanka! At over 1300ft high (400m), this offers incredible panoramic views from the top!

To get to the top, you will have to take the stairs! In total, there are 1,200 steps to Lion Fortress, which is the highest viewpoint on  Sigiriya rock.  Although, you need to be reasonably fit, there are many platforms along the way where you can take breaks & drink water! The views at the top are spectacularly worth it!

trip a deal maldives and sri lanka

Sigiriya, Dambulla Mountain , Sri Lanka is awe inspiring.

Historical Significance:

Sigirya was chosen by King Kasyapa who reigned between (477 – 495 CE) to be the new capital of Sri Lanka. The king built his palace atop of the 400m rock which gates in the shape of a lion! Hence the name Lion Fortress. When the king died the palace was completely deserted.

Head to Sigirya rock early in the morning, before the mid day sun cooks you and the tourist groups descend on the area, as it has become popular in recent years.

Other Tips:

Bring Water & snacks on your journey & the hike!

If you have a few extra days head to Pidurangala Rock, which offering breath taking views of Sigiriya rock. You can also stay somewhere local, before heading to Kandy.

Day 4: Kandy

Kandy is Sri Lankas cultural hub and a must visit city for any length of trip to Sri Lanka, it's also on the UNESCO list.

Temples of Sacred Tooth Relic

A popular attraction here is the Sacred Tooth Relic temple, this is one of the most spiritual places in Sri Lanka and legend says it contains a tooth relic from the Buddha.

Independent guides offer tours around the entire temple for around Rs 600 ($3). Free audio guides are also available from the ticket office.

If you time your trip correctly, you may get to experience one of the exciting fire shows which take place nearby, lots of times per week.

Royal Botanical Gardens

The  Royal Botanical Gardens  are truly awe inspiring! Located in Peradeniya, just 5km from Kandy, the Royal gardens are bucket list place for those who love all things nature! With over 147 acres of lush greenery & colorful flowers there is plenty to explore! The main highlights include the orchid house and the suspension bridge.

trip a deal maldives and sri lanka

Kandy is the perfect place to go Souvenir shopping, with plenty of unique gifts and natural health & beauty products on offer.

Day 5: Kandy to  Nuwara Eliya by Train!

The wind in your hair, the scenic views and the noises of history, train Journeys around Sri Lanka, offer a scenic & ever so romantic way of seeing the country! That is why I suggest, taking one from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya!

This is part of the Kandy to Ella Train Journey which is known as the one of the most scenic in the world! You will see everything from tea plantations & banana trees to villages & waterfalls!

Ella-Sri-Lanka-Nine-arch-bridge- Couple.  (Sri Lanka & Maldives 14 Itinerary/2week travel guide)[/caption]

Train Times:

Your best bet is to take a  train  from  Peradeniya station , about 7 km from  Kandy  (take a tuk tuk or Bus) to  Nanu Oya station  approximately 8 km from  Nuwara Eliya .  2 trains run daily , which depart Peradeniya at 08:40 and 12:23.

2nd or 1st Class?

The main difference here being AC, to be honest I was in 2nd class and it was fine due to the many open windows. Also, considering  Nuwara Eliya  is mountainous and the Coldest city is Sri Lanka!  The temperature was less than 20'C in august, either way the choice is yours

Which side of the Train should I sit?

Kandy  -  Nuwara Eliya , sit on the right side for most of the sights, and if coming back sit on the left  side.  (Left and right referenced to the forward direction of the train)

Bring some on train drinks & snacks as the journey is very long, they do sell some on the train but there is not much of a quality selection. As you approach large train stations, some sellers will offer you goods through the window!

trip a deal maldives and sri lanka

Issues with the Train?

There have been many reports of the train getting really full and people being unable to get a ticket, especially during peak season, (up until march).

Faster Options include:

Tuk Tuk Journey - 2-3 hours

Bus - 2-3 hours

A Tuk Tuk Journey with a cool river/guide is perfect as you can stop when you see great sights, take photos and even stop for snacks! Definitely consider this an option, if your traveling during peak season.

Day 6: Neuwara Elliya

Neuwara Elliya means the "city of light" and is a Scenic hilly area covered with lush Tea Plantations. Popular attractions here include:

Pedro Tea Estate, Factory Tour

Pedro Tea Estate is located 3.5km east of  Nuwara Eliya  towards Kandapola. The 20 minute guided tour is interesting as you get to see machinery built in 1885, but I was disappointed not to see much tea brimming action in the factory.

It turns out here they make a lighter tea, in which processing only happens at night when its colder!

Watch out for leeches if your heading into the tea plantations! Eww!

Hakgala Gardens

Beautiful Gardens located 10km southeast of Nuwara Eliya. Popular sights include, the fine rose garden, the orchid selection and even a Japanese Garden! Be aware the entrance fee can be a little high.

Insider tip

Try to avoid the gardens between Jan-March as this is the planting season so the garden will not look as good as normal.

How to get to Hakgala Gardens?

To get to hakgala gardens, take a welimada-bound bus (rs 22) it takes 20 minutes., best viewpoint - lovers leap waterfall.

After heading to Pedro Tea Estate, take a fantastic walk 5km (round-trip) walk to Lovers Leap, a stunning waterfall.

trip a deal maldives and sri lanka

Other highlights include:  Seetha Amman Temple, and Lake Gregory

Day 7:  Negombo beach

After trekking through Sri Lanka, its nice to relax on at least one Sri Lankan Beach before jetting off! Located just 15 km from the airport, Negombo Beach is a stunning retreat to relax & watch the sunset.

However, be aware that like lots of Sri Lanka the seas can sometimes be rough so don't expect tranquility much there...but if your a surfer its heaven!

Insider tip:

Negombo is actually a great place to stay for at least 2-3 days and explore so if you have longer feel free.

Itinerary in detail

Every Jacada trip is tailored to your personal preferences and interests. Below you’ll find a sample itinerary to inspire your own custom-designed journey.

Discover Galle's timeless treasures

Located on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka, Galle offers a captivating blend of history, culture and coastal beauty. The city boasts a well-preserved Dutch Fort, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and eclectic assemblage of architecture. The narrow cobblestone streets within the fort are lined with colonial-era buildings, charming boutiques and cafes. Galle’s vibrant atmosphere extends beyond the fort, too, with markets, temples and the soothing sounds of the Indian Ocean lapping against its shores.

A personalised walking tour

Set off on a private walking tour with a local resident, tracing the path from the first Portuguese landing to the English departure. Along the way, you’ll discover tales of historic battles, shifting alliances and insider insights into the Fort’s unique blend of cultures spanning three centuries. Explore fortifications, administrative buildings, warehouses, and more, interspersed with churches, temples and mosques.

Where you could stay

trip a deal maldives and sri lanka

Built in 1684 and converted into a hotel in 1863, the Amangalla is a beautiful historic property with plenty of old-world charm.

The hotel features 30 rooms and suites, all with high ceilings, original Burmese teak floors and large windows that look out over the gardens, the harbour or the

Extending the length of the hotel on the ground floor is a beautiful verandah with colourful floor tiles and palm trees. Here you can enjoy afternoon tea or a refreshing drink as you sit and watch the world go by. Step inside and you’ll find yourself in the Great Hall with its lofty ceilings, period lighting and overhead fans. The dining room sits at one end, an elegant space with crisp white linen and antique silverwear. Here you can enjoy traditional Sri Lankan dishes centred around what the chef finds that day in the local markets.

At the other end of the hall is the lounge, the perfect place to enjoy a cup of Ceylon tea or an evening cocktail. There is also a library with a range of books on the history, culture and arts of Sri Lanka.

Relax and unwind at the spa which features hot and cold plunge pools and a sauna, as well as treatment rooms where you can enjoy traditional Sri Lankan therapies. Take a dip in the refreshing waters of the outdoor pool, surrounded by the lush greenery of the garden or enjoy a morning yoga class in the yoga pavilion to set yourself up for a day of exploring.

Two nights in Yala National Park

Yala National Park , Sri Lanka’s second-largest and most popular, occupies the southeastern corner of the island. Divided into five blocks, two of them (Ruhuna and Kumana) are open for guided game drives. Covering 979 square kilometers of diverse landscapes – forest, wetlands, and savannah – the park is a crucial habitat for numerous species, including elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, wild water buffaloes and more than 200 bird species.

The park is renowned for its high concentration of leopards, possibly the highest in the world. Spotting these elusive predators remains a challenge due to their secretive nature, but with a skilled guide and a bit of luck, Yala is one of the best places globally to encounter these mysterious cats.

trip a deal maldives and sri lanka

To the southern edge of Yala National Park, the luxurious Chena Huts sit overlooking a beach where turtles lay eggs at night and elephants venture down from the jungle to play in the surf. It is bordered by forest and a saline lake home to ibises, painted storks and even flamingos.

There are just 14 thatched ‘huts’ set around the property, though calling these sweeping thatched pavilions – each with a living area, bedroom, freestanding bathtub and shaded outdoor deck with built-in 5m plunge pool – is an understatement.

The Basses restaurant takes its name from the nearby reefs and lighthouse and is suitably nautical in its theme. Private dining experiences can be organised, whether on the beach under the stars or by a camp fire surrounded by nature. There’s also a swimming pool with poolside bar concealed behind a waterfall and an Ayurveda spa in which to unwind.

As well as safaris into the Ruhuna block of Yala National Park, other nearby attractions include fabulous birding in Bundala National Park, and the Great and Little Basses reefs, off which blue and humpback whales congregate and dolphins frolic. Kataragama, an ancient forest shrine on the edge of Yala that attracts tens of thousands of Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims in July and August, is close by too.

Two nights in Tea Country

Nestled amidst rolling hills and lush landscapes, Sri Lanka’s Tea Country stands as a testament to the nation’s rich tradition of tea cultivation. The central highlands, particularly around Nuwara Eliya, Kandy and Ella, boast picturesque tea plantations that paint the hillsides in vibrant shades of green.

Renowned for its Ceylon tea, Sri Lanka has earned its stripes as a major global producer. The cool climate and fertile soil of the elevated regions create an ideal environment for cultivating tea bushes, and the meticulous hand-plucking of tender tea leaves ensures the production of high-quality tea.

You’ll see the hills dotted with women harvesting leaves by hand, baskets slung across their backs. Skilful workers deftly pluck the most flavoursome and aromatic parts of the bushes – the topmost leaves and buds – which are then dried and processed.

Tea Plantation tour with a tea planter

Guided by a seasoned tea planter, traverse the picturesque landscapes of a renowned estate. On this immersive experience, the planter unravels the tapestry of Ceylon tea, sharing insights into its rich history and cultural significance. What went into creating the perfect cup of refreshing Ceylon tea in 1867 were equal parts science, art, sleight of hand and a spot of luck – and little has changed since.  You’ll engage in the age-old art of hand-plucking tender tea leaves, connecting with the very essence of the tea-making process.

trip a deal maldives and sri lanka

Venture into the lush heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country and surround yourself in old-world luxury at Thotalagala, a carefully restored planters bungalow which dates back to the 19 th century.

Each of the seven suites is inspired by prominent role-players in the tea-growing region’s history. Situated on Pitaratmalie Estate, the hotel offers easy access to all tea country has to offer, including Dambatenne where Sir Thomas Lipton lived in the late 1800s.

Décor is elegantly refined, with antique furniture complemented by carefully-chosen artworks. Enjoy a cigar or after-dinner drink in the lavish cigar room, indulge in a sumptuous tea out on the lawns or allow the chef to treat you to a feast of plantation-inspired cuisine in the dining room. For an extra special Thotalagala dining experience enjoy perfectly barbecued meat beneath the stars, while sipping a fine wine from the cellar.

As this is a working estate, guests are welcome to explore the gardens and fields, learning about how tea is produced. Immerse yourself in the history of the area and keep a look-out for memorabilia from the region’s colonial past.

Overnight in Colombo

An overnight stay in Colombo unveils a vibrant cityscape. As the sun dips below the horizon, dive into Colombo’s eclectic cocktail scene, where mixologists craft innovative concoctions that mirror the city’s dynamic spirit. Some streets come alive with the aroma of tantalising street food, inviting you to savour local delicacies like kottu roti and hoppers, while elsewhere you’ll find refined restaurants and chic rooftop lounges.

wallawwa-garden

Located within five acres of landscapes tropical gardens is The Wallawwa, a colonial manor house with plenty of character and charm.

A short drive from the airport and under an hour from the hustle and bustle of Colombo itself, this is a great option for those wanting a tranquil stay while never being too far from the action.

The hotel features 17 elegant rooms and suites, some featuring their own verandah overlooking the garden. For families or small groups, the two-bedroom Mountbatten Suite with private plunge pool and garden is perfect. It is so named because Lord Mountbatten was commander in chief of the south east Asia command, the headquarters of which were in Sri Lanka – then Ceylon.

Dine at the Verandah restaurant, which makes use of fresh, local ingredients to create delicious fusion cuisine. You can also enjoy high tea in the garden, enjoyed with a cup of Sri Lanka’s famous tea. When you want to relax and unwind, the Z Spa offers a range of rejuvenating treatments, and there is an outdoor pool nestled among the lush foliage.

This urban retreat also has a wonderful swimming pool, private courtyards, a gourmet restaurant, bar and gym within its walls.

The embodiment of minimalist elegance, the 33 overwater villas sit on snaked wooden decks, where you can slip straight into the soothing turquoise lagoon for world-class snorkelling and diving on the private reef.

The suites on Makunufushi island resemble a collection of Kerelan boathouses, each with a private sundeck, vintage-style ceiling fans, whitewashed walls, and lavish en-suite with roll-top bathtub. The ultra-private one-bedroom villas also offer dining bales and outdoor showers.

As one of the smaller resorts, there is a definitive calmness to Cocoa Island that is hard to beat. From the gardens to the infinity and hydrotherapy pools, yoga pavilion to the renowned COMO Shambhala spa, wellbeing is central to life here.

The resorts main restaurant, Ufaa, has a daily-changing menu specialising in Southeast Asian and Mediterranean dishes, using organic vegetables and freshly caught seafood. Romantic candlelit dinners and glamorous picnics are served on the beach.

Diving and snorkelling are the main attraction here, with parrotfish, rays and small sharks spotted in the surrounding waters.

An inter-island flight from Malé Airport and a short boat ride takes you to this tropical playground, and with 97 beach and water villas, Six Senses Laamu is the only resort in the Laamu Atoll. Sustainability is central to this eco-conscious resort’s operations, and several programmes are implemented to uplift the local community and protect the surrounding ecosystems.

The villas have been tastefully constructed using sustainable materials and all have large private balconies with sun loungers, so you never have to leave the comfort of your island home. The villas also encompass a private outdoor shower and an upper deck for romantic sunset dinners.

Various dining tastes are taken care of on this privately-owned island, with local and international cuisines on offer in an array of settings, including inventive meals at an eatery perched above the garden, Japanese favourites at a live kitchen station, overlooking the sea and 40 flavours of ice-cream in an alfresco parlour. Many of the dishes are created using organic ingredients grown in the island’s gardens, recycling practices are carried out and single-use plastic is banned.

The waters surrounding the Laamu Atoll are wonderful for diving, with schools of tropical fish and colourful coral waiting beneath the surface. There’s an on-site Marine Team at this resort that seek to educate guests about the importance of protecting the marine environment.

As well as the wealth of water sports on offer, other activities such as movie screenings in the jungle, deluxe spa treatments, sunset dhoni cruises, sand dune dining and yoga and aerobics classes are available.

When the time comes to leave, board a scenic seaplane ride to and from your hotel, offering a unique perspective of the lagoon. If you prefer, we can also organise a speedboat ride, considering the current weather and sea conditions.

trip a deal maldives and sri lanka

Travel with the experts for a carefully curated, value-packed discovery of the world's most iconic destinations. Our tours are bursting with must-see sights, rich experiences and quality inclusions, all at an unbeatable price. Bucket list dreams are ticked off on these all-encompassing journeys.

Day 1 Home Colombo

Welcome to Sri Lanka!

On arrival into Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), upon entering into the arrivals hall, you will have many reputable transfer options to assist you in making your own way to the accommodation - transfers can be arranged prior to arrival via your Traveller Hub.

Check in and relax after your international flight. As most flights arrive late in the evening, we recommend booking a night prior to your tour commencing to ensure you are well rested.

Day 2 Colombo South Coast

After breakfast, your guide will give you a brief introduction before we make the drive along the South Coast. Before departing, we explore the capital of Colombo. Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, has a long history as a port on ancient east-west trade routes, ruled successively by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British. This heritage is reflected in its architecture, mixing colonial buildings with high-rises and shopping malls.

We will also visit the Colombo National Museum. This charming museum takes visitors on a fascinating journey through Sri Lankan history. Housed in a stunning neo-Baroque building, which was specifically constructed by William Henry Gregory, Governor of Ceylon, in 1877, the museum boasts a gleaming white façade. As you make your way through the various rooms, you'll encounter exhibits dedicated to each of Sri Lanka's historical kingdoms. Informational display boards provide intriguing insights, such as the meaning behind the mudras (gestures and poses) depicted in Sri Lanka's Buddha statues.

On arrival, we check in to our hotel before we set out on a tour of the Galle Fort and its fortifications (may occur on day 3). This is a city that exudes an essence with a perfect blend of past and present. Declared as an UNESCO heritage site in 1988, the presence of Portuguese, Dutch and English is very evident in the fascinating architectural styles of the Galle Fort.

Day 3 South Coast

Today is a full day to enjoy the coastal beauty of Sri Lanka's coastline. These areas are renowed for their sandy beaches, palm tree lined points and exude a cool coastal vibe.

Day 4 South Coast Yala National Park

We enjoy breakfast at the hotel before making the drive to Yala National Park.

Here, spend your afternoon on a guided game drive exploring the dynamic wildlife and the most luxuriant plant life in Yala National Park. Being one of the largest parks in Sri Lanka, it is the ideal place to sight the rare leopard! The game drive will take place in the late afternoon, returning around sunset, as this is an optimal time for animal viewing.

Note: Yala National Park is closed for routine maintenance in September/October under direction of the local government. The exact dates will not be advised until 1-2 months prior to departure. During this time Udawalawe National Park or Yala National Park (Block 5) will be visited and offers equal animal sighting opportunities.

Day 5 Yala National Park Nine Arch Bridge Bandarawela

Today we leave for Bandarawela close to Ella. En route, we witness the picturesque waterfall, Rawana Waterfall before checking into our hotel.

This afternoon we visit Nine Arch Bridge - also called the Bridge in the Sky is one of the best examples of colonial-era railway construction in the country. The construction of the bridge is generally attributed to a local Ceylonese builder, in consultation with British engineers. It is located in Demodara, between Ella and Demodara railway stations. The surrounding area has seen a steady increase of tourism due to the bridge's architectural ingenuity and the profuse greenery in the nearby hillsides.

Enjoy a morning Safari in Yala National Park. Departing around sunrise, it allows you to witness animals greeting the morning light and affords you extra time in the safari park to spot its elusive species.

Start: 6:00am End: 9:00am

Day 6 Bandarawela

Enjoy a full day to relax in the hilly surrounds of Bandarawela.

Early morning with packed breakfast leave for Horton Plains and World's End. This park holds great importance due to the rich and unique biodiversity and being a catchment area feeding some of the main rivers of Sri Lanka. It is also known to be a " Super biodiversity hotspot " and thus declared a UNESCO site in 2010. Couple of kilometres into the park there is a site known as the World's End, an abrupt end, the land plummets straight down 900m, this is just an astonishing view and a somewhat cool thrill!

Wear strong and comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunglasses. Bring sunscreen, food and water. The weather can change very quickly on the plains – one minute it can be sunny and clear, the next chilly and misty. Bring a few extra layers of warm clothing.

It is forbidden to leave the paths, which can be slippery and tough to negotiate in places. There are no safety rails available so we recommend this activity for those who are physically fit and go on long walks often. We do not recommend this if you have a difficult time walking along uneven terrain.

Please note - there are 3 different route options, depending on your general level of fitness: Route 1 - Approx. 8.5kms Route 2 - Approx. 7kms Route 3 - Approx. 4.5kms

Day 7 Bandarawela Nuwara Eliya

Enjoy a leisurely departure from Bandarawela as we make our way to Nuwara Eliya.

On arrival we visit a tea plantation and factory. Here you will enjoy the absolute tea experience, taking you to the moment the young tea leaves are plucked from the plantation to being processed in the factory to make a steamy cup of tea. If you are interested, the tea factory is the best place to purchase good quality tea.

Day 8 Nuwara Eliya Kandy

Today we leave for Kandy. The train journey is truly a rare experience and is an adventure itself! Apart from the breathtaking sceneries of the tea country and picturesque waterfalls, it is a chance for you to mingle with the local people.

Kandy, the Hill Capital (1514 – 1815 AD). Originally known as Senkadagala, the city eventually came to be known as Kandy. Kandy was declared as an UNESCO heritage site in 1988. The style and character of the Sri Lankan civilization at the time is well articulated in the heart of the city itself, with its lake, the temples including the Temple of the Tooth Relic and the well preserved ruins of the royal palaces.

On arrival, we check in to our hotel, allowing you time to explore the town.

This evening enjoy a typical Sri Lankan Cultural Performance with Kandy Market & Bazaar tour.

Note: that it is not possible to confirm the train ticket reservation due to the fact that Sri Lanka Railway has a manual system for reservations. Tickets can only be booked 30 days prior to departure. The 1st and 2nd class is basic but has air-conditioning. The non-air conditioned 3rd class sometimes is the only option based availability. On the rare occasion the train is fully booked we’ll conduct the route by road.

Day 9 Kandy Dambulla Cave Minneriya National Park Sigiriya

After breakfast we proceed to Sigiriya, stopping on route to visit Dambulla cave temple. Built in the first century BC, it is recognized to be the largest cave sanctuary in the world with its 2000 m2 of walls and ceilings painted more than 150 Buddha images whose largest engraved in the rock reaches 14 metres high.

After the cave, arrive at your Inspiring Stay - the 5-star Sigiriya Jungles Resort overlooking an iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress.

This afternoon, set out on an exclusively private jeep safari at the Minneriya National Park to witness the unique phenomenon of elephant gathering. During the dry season, from June to September, hundreds of elephants gather around the Minneriya Tank for water. Such a large number of elephants could not be sighted at one place, anywhere else in the world!

Note: since elephants are migratory animals, we may visit Wasgamuwa National Park on this day instead, pending elephant locations.

Tonight, enjoy a group dinner and celebrate your new friendships.

Day 10 Sigiriya Polonnaruwa Sigiriya

After breakfast we proceed to Sigiriya Rock Fortress and climb the Sigiriya Rock, one of the most extraordinary artistic complexes of its time (477 – 498 AD). Declared as an UNESCO heritage site in 1982, this magnificent citadel allures artistic and architectural curiosity from around the globe.

Return to the hotel to relax before taking part in an Inspiring Taste cooking demonstration of Sri Lankan rice and curry preparation (5-6 curries including a specialty crab dish) and enjoy the typical Sri Lankan lunch overlooking the paddy fields.

This afternoon enjoy a sightseeing tour of the mediaeval capital city of Polonnaruwa. This was declared as an UNESCO heritage site in 1982. After the demise of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa became the middle historic capital of Sri Lanka (1017 – 1235 AD).

Enjoy a 2nd night in your Inspiring Stay and its surroundings.

Day 11 Sigiriya Negombo

Today, depart the beauty of Sigiriya as we make the drive back to Negombo. On arrival, enjoy the afternoon free at leisure to explore the coast and the local activity or simply relax by the pool.

Day 12 Negombo Colombo Male Maldives

This morning, enjoy a visit to the Fish Market. Negombo is home for the Island’s second largest fish market, as locals call – “Lellama”

At the appropriate time, make your own way to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) to board your flight to Male.

Welcome to Paradise! A visit to the Maldives is truly a dream come true. This stunning tropical nation lies within the Indian Ocean and is composed of 26 colourful coral atolls composed of hundreds of idyllic islands. The Maldives is world famous for it’s beautiful beaches, sapphire blue lagoons and extensive coral reefs.

Day 13 Maldives

This morning enjoy a delicious breakfast while admiring the surrounding low-lying islands that make up the utopian Maldives. Every atoll here is formed by centuries of coral reef growth, and each is encircled by a shallow lagoon, protected by the surrounding reef systems. The islands here have tropical castaway qualities: tall coconut palms, white sandy beaches and crystal clear lagoons. Today you may enjoy an entire day of leisure, participating in some of the many exciting activities that the islands have to offer.

Our hotel offers some phenomenal snorkeling opportunities, where you can explore the shallow oases at the islands edge. You may also choose to enjoy some exciting optional water sport activities, such as catamaran sailing where you can experience the thrill of riding the winds and speeding through the crystal waters. Canoeing may also appeal to those who seek tranquility while they enjoy the surrounding natural beauty. Windsurfing is also an activity available to the more adventurous. There really is no end to the adventures you may seek as you explore the wonderful Maldives - jet-skiing, parasailing, and scuba diving may also be on your list.

Yala National Park

Please note that Yala National Park closes for a period between the months of September and October. The exact closure dates are made clear closer to the time. The closure is due to the prevailing dry weather prior to this time and taking into consideration the well-being of the wildlife in the reserve. For departure dates that fall over this period, as defined in the departure dates listed below, Yala National park will be replaced with a visit to Udawalawe National Park, while still being able to visit Block 4 or 5 of Yala National Park. Please refer to the itinerary.

Although smaller in size to Yala National Park, Udawalawe National Park is considered one of the world's best places to see wild elephants. Largely comprised of grasslands and bush forest, Udawalawe is also one of the best national parks in Sri Lanka for game spotting and being far less crowded than Yala, it makes for a more enjoyable experience for travellers and therefore, we believe is a more than suitable alternative for one safari day. You will still be able to visit Block 4 or 5 of Yala National Park, so you are able to experience both.
