Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or it’s your first time abroad, having travel insurance for a Singapore vacation can be beneficial. From trip cancellation protection to medical expense coverage, travel insurance can help reimburse nonrefundable costs if your plans go astray.

We at the MarketWatch Guides Team have reviewed the best travel insurance companies and compiled what to know about travel insurance for Singapore, including advantages and costs.

Do I Need Travel Insurance for Singapore?

As of February 2023, Singapore has eased up on COVID-19-related travel insurance requirements. Visitors are no longer required to obtain travel insurance before entering the country, but the government still highly recommends it.

In case things go wrong, having travel insurance coverage can provide an added layer of security. A comprehensive travel insurance plan may cover emergency medical expenses and assistance, lost or delayed baggage, unexpected trip cancellations and flight delays.

Singapore is known for outdoor adventure activities like kayaking, scuba diving and hiking — and travel insurance can offer peace of mind when you’re exploring the great outdoors. Most plans include emergency medical coverage if you sustain injuries while traveling, and some policies offer protection for sporting gear.

But every traveler is unique and will require different coverage. Whether you’re an adventure aficionado or a business traveler, there’s an insurance plan that’s right for you. Here are the most common travel insurance coverages:

Cancel for Any Reason Coverage

Cancel for any reason coverage , also known as CFAR, allows you to claim reimbursement if you cancel your trip for reasons not listed in your insurance policy. CFAR coverage is advantageous for travelers who might need to cancel their trip for unconventional reasons.

When compared to standard travel insurance, CFAR coverage is more flexible. However, it can be more costly and doesn’t always cover you completely. There are a handful of rules to qualify for coverage, including:

  • You may have to cancel at least 48 hours before your departure date.
  • You need to buy CFAR coverage within a certain number of days after booking your trip.

Gear Theft Protection

Singapore has some of the highest safety rankings in the world . Nevertheless, backing yourself with gear theft protection can still be a wise choice, especially if you’re traveling with valuable personal belongings, travel documents and credit cards.

Travel insurance can help cover you in case your items are lost, damaged or stolen. Although travel insurance policies include predetermined cost limitations and exclusions, coverage is worth considering if you wish to bring the following:

  • A laptop, tablet or smartphone
  • Professional camera and equipment
  • Sports equipment (like a kayak)

Note that, due to sub-limits on some policies, your policy may not cover the full value of your items. Review your policy documents, including the product disclosure statement, to ensure you are protected. If not, you may want to consider leaving some of your more valuable items at home.

Medical Emergency Insurance and Emergency Medical Evacuation

If you encounter health complications during your trip, having travel insurance with medical emergencies and evacuation coverage can make a big difference.

In Singapore, the smog and tropical heat may negatively affect some travelers . Be sure to declare any pre-existing medical conditions like high blood pressure, asthma or skin conditions when booking your trip insurance.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies can cover a variety of scenarios, from viral outbreaks to unforeseen medical treatments. Keep in mind that your U.S. health insurance card may not provide coverage abroad, even if you have a private plan. If things go awry, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you have medical protection with travel insurance.

For medical emergency coverage, a standard travel insurance policy may include:

  • Hospital admission fees
  • Operations and operating room fees
  • Ambulance fees
  • X-rays and lab tests
  • Dental costs

Travel insurance companies also usually include coverage for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation. In recent years following the pandemic, medical insurance has become a consideration for many American travelers.

Some companies also offer medical coverage for sports and adventure enthusiasts. Overseas medical expenses and treatments can add up, especially if you’re into extreme sports.

Rental Car Protection

Singapore requires car rental companies to have insurance . In most cases, rental car insurance in Singapore covers the vehicle in the event of traffic accidents. Most car rental companies opt for a basic collision damage waiver coverage that comes with limitations. Two important factors to look out for include:

  • Most car rental companies will choose to opt for a higher excess, or what you will have to pay when making a claim.
  • The majority of companies will only cover car use in Singapore.

Check your insurance policy before driving a Singapore rental car into other countries. For example, you may not have coverage if you drive a vehicle from Singapore to places like Hong Kong, Brunei, Cambodia or Malaysia.

If you’re traveling to Singapore and planning to rent a car, you can also purchase travel insurance with rental car coverage for extra protection. Some types of rental car coverage include:

  • Collision damage waiver
  • Theft protection
  • Third-party liability
  • Personal accident insurance

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Trip cancellation insurance can reimburse you in the event of unforeseen circumstances while traveling. This type of travel insurance covers cancellations for the following reasons:

  • Death of a traveling companion or immediate family member
  • Diagnosis of a serious medical condition or injury
  • Natural disasters or dangerous weather conditions
  • Domestic or international acts of terrorism
  • Legal obligations like jury duty

Trip cancellation insurance is mostly limited to the above reasons. For more flexibility, it’s best to opt for CFAR coverage.

How Much Does Singapore Travel Insurance Cost?

The cost of travel insurance can vary depending on your coverage preferences, age and desired destination. Whether you’re searching for single-trip plans or annual multi-trip coverage, there are multiple providers to consider. And if you are on a budget, cheap travel insurance options are available.

To receive a quote from a travel insurance provider, you’ll be required to submit the following information:

  • Destination country
  • Your home location
  • Age group and the number of travelers
  • Total trip price

To offer insight into typical costs, we gathered quotes from five different travel insurance providers. We based the following prices on a 30-year-old traveler from California to Singapore for two weeks, with a total trip cost of $4,000.

*Note: We collected the above quotes from each company’s website in May 2023. Plans include coverage for trip cancellation, trip interruption, medical emergencies and baggage delay or loss.

How Do I Get Travel Insurance for Singapore?

There are a few things to consider before purchasing a travel insurance plan for your trip to Singapore. First, it’s worth seeing if your current health insurance plan or credit card offers any overseas coverage. We also recommend you check to see if your health insurance extends to medical emergencies abroad.

Compare various insurance options and consider factors like COVID-19 coverage, medical expenses, emergency assistance, trip cancellation and travel delays. For example, most major airlines offer travel insurance when booking flights, but coverage may not include specific medical emergencies.

Remember, full reimbursement isn’t always guaranteed, so carefully review policy wording and disclaimers. Familiarize yourself with coverage exclusions and consider add-ons to enhance your travel insurance coverage.

Singapore Safety Tips

Singapore is considered one of the safest countries for travel . Whether you are traversing this modern, metropolitan city-state as an experienced traveler or a first-timer, here are some things to take into account:

Crime and Safety

Crime rates are relatively low in Singapore. However, petty crime can still happen in major tourist areas, hotel lobbies, airports and public transportation facilities. Keep an eye out for pickpocketing and theft and, if possible, keep your valuables stored in locked safes when not in use.

Day Trips, Tours and Excursions

There are plenty of options for travel from Singapore, whether you are planning a day trip to Malaysia or a longer stay in Indonesia or Thailand. If you’re planning an active activity, make sure your travel insurance plan covers medical expenses and emergency assistance.

As of February 2023, the Singapore government has lifted all restrictions regarding COVID-19 .

The country does not require COVID-19 coverage and vaccinations for international air travelers. You also do not need to show a vaccine passport to return to the U.S.

In case of an emergency when traveling in Singapore, call the U.S. Embassy hotline at +(65) 6476-9100.

Is Travel Insurance for a Singapore Vacation Worth It?

Although travel insurance for a Singapore vacation is not mandatory, it comes with many benefits. Standard insurance may cover you for lost baggage, medical emergencies, flight postponements or other travel inconveniences. Or you can opt for more comprehensive coverage, which could include protection for valuable items like cameras and sporting gear.

Travel insurance can also offer peace of mind if you have to cancel your trip due to unforeseen circumstances. Plus, there are many add-on options to improve your travel insurance coverage — like CFAR or rental car coverage.

Ultimately, it’s up to you if travel insurance is worth it for a vacation to Singapore. We recommend comparing quotes and general information from at least three travel insurance companies before purchasing a policy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Travel Insurance in Singapore

How can i claim flight compensation.

The U.S. does not always require airlines to compensate you for delayed or canceled flights. Most major airlines have limitations that only allow refunds if cancellations are the airline’s fault or due to overbooking. However, travel insurance offers reimbursement for nonrefundable costs, such as airline tickets, for certain trip cancellations.

Do you need travel insurance for Singapore?

You are not required to have travel insurance to enter Singapore. But purchasing travel insurance can offer policyholders peace of mind in knowing their trip is protected against unexpected events.

Do tourists get free health care in Singapore?

Travelers do not receive free health care in Singapore. But medical expenses can add up if you need treatment while abroad. Travel insurance can help cover emergency medical expenses while in Singapore. Or you can check to see if your health care extends to emergency care while traveling.

Can I buy travel insurance after I depart for Singapore?

No. To claim reimbursement, you need to purchase travel insurance before your departure date.

Last updated: 02/23/2024

As of February 13, 2023, Singapore no longer requires visitors to obtain a travel insurance policy that covers Covid-19. However, getting a comprehensive travel insurance policy that covers medical emergencies, cancellations, and delays is still strongly recommended to all travelers.

Squaremouth’s Singapore Travel Insurance Recommendations

Squaremouth recommends a policy that offers Emergency Medical coverage with at least $50,000 for international destinations. Squaremouth also recommends travelers have at least $100,000 of Emergency Evacuation coverage as well. All medical policies through Squaremouth offer both Emergency Medical and Emergency Evacuation coverage.

Many travelers visiting Singapore have high prepaid and nonrefundable trip costs. Due to these high trip costs, along with the required medical benefits, Squaremouth recommends travelers purchase a policy with Trip Cancellation coverage. This benefit can reimburse 100% of the traveler’s prepaid and nonrefundable trip expenses if they need to cancel for a covered reason, such as unforeseen illness or injury. Travelers can also be covered under this benefit if they contract Covid-19 before leaving for their trip.

Squaremouth also recommends the Travel Delay benefit providing coverage for the significant travel involved getting to Singapore. Travelers can be covered up to 150% of the trip costs if their flight is delayed, and they miss out on a portion of the trip. It also can cover other reasonable expenses such as food and hotels, as well as required quarantines because of Covid-19.

The most common traveler concern is having to quarantine at their destination. The Travel Delay benefit can typically provide $150 to $200 per day for all covered travelers for required quarantine expenses such as accommodations and food. It can also provide reimbursement for rebooking a different flight home.

If you want to ensure that your next trip out of Singapore is totally stress-free, you may want to consider Singlife's travel insurance plans. • Summary of Coverage

Singlife travel insurance plans stand out for being fairly priced policies with great overall coverage; few, if any, weak points; and some nice VIP perks thrown in that golfers and sports enthusiasts will appreciate. Its mid-tier and premium-tier plans, the Travel Plus and Travel Prestige plans, are Singlife's best travel insurance plans. They both offer great value for your money, providing well-rounded coverage in all areas. However, Aviva's budget option, the Travel Lite Plan, fails to make much of an impression, lacking the "oomph" of other cheap plans.

A graph comparing value of travel insurance in Singapore from all major insurers in the country, assuming a 1-week trip in ASEAN region

Whether you are looking for a basic or top-tier plan, are a business traveller or an adventure seeker, Singlife provides benefits that will ensure complete coverage. If you are a business traveller, you will receive coverage for a replacement traveller (if you cannot go on the business trip). If you are travelling for sports, you have options to purchase comprehensive add-ons for extreme water sports, winter sports and golfing—regardless of the plan you choose. If you are not dependent on price, you can receive some of the best medical and trip inconvenience coverage. However, cost-conscious adventurers may find Aviva to be pricey and can find suitable alternatives that provide golf and sports coverage for cheaper.

Notable Exclusions

Singlife has pretty generous coverage, so most exclusions are the standard medical and trip-related events. For example, you are not covered for cosmetic surgery, diseases caught because you failed to receive proper inoculations, claims made because you didn't feel like travelling and mental disorders.

Singlife Travel Insurance Lite

The Singlife Travel Insurance Lite fails to impress with its below average coverage. Overall, while it provides a wide array of coverage and plans generally cost between 5-20% below average, its benefit limits are low enough to make it a fairly unremarkable option compared to other plans that offer higher coverage for similar prices. For example, the Allianz Global Assistance's Bronze Plan or ERGO's Essential plan provides a similar or even greater level of coverage in most areas for a cheaper price.

That being said, Singlife Travel Insurance Lite does distinguish itself somewhat from other budget travel insurance plans by including some specialized benefits that might catch the eye of sports enthusiasts or vacationers. On the whole, it provides the most coverage among entry-level travel insurance plans for golf equipment and unused green fees, as well as coverage for water sports and winter sports during week-long trips to ASEAN countries. It also may be of interest to travellers to destination weddings, as it provides a rudimentary amount of coverage for the cost of wedding photos. However, if you don't plan to engage in these kinds of activities, keep in mind that you may be paying for coverage in areas you don't need with the Singlife Travel Lite Plan.

Singlife Travel Insurance Plus

The Singlife Travel Insurance Plus offers the best coverage of all mid-tier travel insurance plans studied for medical expenses, baggage loss/damage per item and trip cancellations. Overall, the Singlife Travel Insurance Plus is one of the highest value plans on the market despite its rather average pricing. It is an especially good choice for consumers who are concerned about medical coverage, for instance those who are travelling to countries with expensive healthcare or will be participating in new activities. Singlife Plus' medical coverage limtis are almost 3x as high compared to other mid-tier plans and its medical evacuation limit is 100% higher. Even niche benefits like medical treatment back in Singapore and emergency medical expenses due to pregnancy are above average.

On the other hand, if your travel concerns deal more with missing your flight, delays or cutting your trip short, travellers may fare better with plans like Allianz. The only upper hand Singlife has is that it lets you change your trip dates or cancel it for any reason (albeit 50% of your claim and as long as its not a reason listed in the general exclusions). Furthermore, the Singlife Travel Insurance Plus plan is a better pick for those who want to maximise peace of mind as they engage in recreational activities while on holiday. Unlike the former, the Singlife Travel Plus Plan includes generous coverage for water and winter sports and sports/golf equipment, as well as a couple added perks for golfers and wedding-goers. Combined with its top-shelf medical expenses coverage, the Aviva Travel Plus Plan ensures that you can fully enjoy your vacation without worry.

Singlife Travel Insurance Prestige

While other premium plans may excel in certain areas while failing in others, the Singlife Travel Insurance Prestige will back you up no matter what. Like the Plus plan, the Prestige plan is a fully-featured, generous plan that costs below average for the most common destinations in the ASEAN and Asia. Even better, this plan lacks any weak points in terms of coverage, tending to provide at least the average amount of coverage in every single category and often exceeding the average.

Overall, the Singlife Travel Insurance Prestige Plan is certainly good value for your money. However, depending on your preferences, there could still be a premier travel insurance plan better suited to your needs. If you are most interested in a plan that offers maximum protection against baggage loss or damage and trip cancellations, the Allianz Global Assistance Gold Plan is another high-value plan that provides better coverage in these areas. Furthermore, Singlife Prestige is quite expensive and annual or global coverage plans can cost up to 28% more than average for top-tier plans. However, when weighing this plan against others, you should take into consideration the generous coverage Singlife provides. While its main competitors may be cheaper, they may offer more restrictive coverage (i.e. they won't cover you if you decide to hike or ski) or they may have inferior coverage.

Although you'll have to pay extra for whatever activity you know you'll be participating in, Singlife has some of the best sports coverage you can find. There is comprehensive coverage for golfing, winter sports and extreme water sports (rafting, canoeing/kayaking, yachting, jet skiing, sailboarding, wind surfing, water skiing, dragon boating, deep sea fishing). The main thing to note is that you have to do some of activities with a licensed operator only. Though not necessarily sports-related, there is also full cover for motorcycling provided you have a license. Additionally, if you choose not to buy specific cover for an activity, you will automatically be covered for normal adventurous activity that poses no severe health risk—as long as you do it with a guide or tour operator.

You can submit claims with Singlife online through their claims portal. If you are claiming for reasons that required you to pay upfront (such as medical), you have to mail the original documents, along with your policy number.

Singlife Travel Insurance Summary

It is important to make sure that you will be adequately protected for whatever you decide to do on your next vacation, and therefore it is vital that you choose the right travel insurance plan. Below, you'll find how Singlife compares in price and coverage to the industry's overall averages. If you would like to see how Singlife compares to other plans on the market, you can read our guide to the best travel insurance policies in Singapore.

travel insurance trip cancellation for any reason singapore

The only way that you can guarantee coverage for an event not specified in a traditional comprehensive travel plan, such as the coronavirus, is to purchase an upgrade for the cancel for any reason (also known as CFAR) benefit.

What Is Cancel for Any Reason Travel Insurance?

The cancel for any reason benefit is an optional upgrade (available for an additional fee) with select travel insurance plans. It is time-sensitive and must be purchased once the trip is booked and an initial deposit on the trip is made. Several other eligibility requirements must be met, including canceling the trip within a specified time. If all criteria are met, CFAR allows travelers the flexibility to cancel their trip for any reason and recover part of the cost.

"The CFAR option enables the insured to cancel their trip for any reason up to 48 to 72 hours prior to their scheduled departure date and receive a partial reimbursement of their insured trip costs, depending on the plan and provider. If you cancel within that 48 to 72 hours, only the standard trip cancellation reasons will apply," says Stan Sandberg, co-founder of TravelInsurance.com, another insurance aggregator.

Another requirement to qualify for the CFAR benefit is that you need to insure 100% of your nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs, Sandberg adds. That amount must include any trip costs subject to a cancellation penalty, fee or other restriction, according to Sandberg.

"If someone buys a CFAR policy and then purchases additional travel arrangements, they are also required to insure those subsequent travel arrangements in order to meet the 100% requirement. They must purchase the additional insurance within the same timeframe as the original purchase, 24 hours to 21 days, depending on the plan," he says.

[Read: The Best Travel Insurance Credit Cards .]

Additionally, when evaluating plans with CFAR, you should know there are major differences in reimbursement rates, especially when there are more deposits and prepaid costs involved with longer and more expensive trips. There are also per-person coverage limits. Travelers need to keep in mind that regulations and rates vary by the insured's state of residence as well.

When Do You Have to Buy Cancel for Any Reason Travel Insurance?

Travelers must purchase cancel for any reason insurance typically within 21 days of booking the trip or paying a deposit toward the vacation.

"All CFAR plans require that you purchase the plan and the optional upgrade within a strict timeframe from when the insured made their initial trip deposit or payment. The window ranges from 24 hours to 21 days. Once a customer is outside of the 21 days of their initial trip payment date, then CFAR is no longer available for their trip," Sandberg says.

After that time, the only policy available for purchase would be a standard travel insurance plan.

Some companies also have tighter windows of just 10, 14 or 15 days from when you booked or put a deposit down on a trip to be able to purchase the CFAR upgrade, so you need to compare policies carefully. Also, if you are planning a last-minute trip, be sure to purchase the insurance with the CFAR benefit more than 24 hours prior to your time of departure. You cannot buy this upgrade the day of travel and have valid coverage.

What Does Cancel for Any Reason Travel Insurance Cover?

As long as you meet all the eligibility requirements and restrictions on timeframes as outlined above, and can purchase the CFAR upgrade, it will cover canceling your trip for any reason. If you are uncomfortable traveling, whether it's because you've had a change of heart or due to coronavirus concerns or anything in between, you don't need to explain. Just be sure that you have documentation for the exact amount of your prepaid and nonrefundable expenses that were insured to submit for your claim.

What Doesn't Cancel for Any Reason Travel Insurance Cover?

The only time CFAR would not cover a claim is if the eligibility requirements are not met. These would include items mentioned above, such as purchasing the benefit within less than 24 hours of the departure time, not canceling the trip at least 48 to 72 hours before the departure date (as specified in the plan), or not correctly insuring the exact dates and amount of the trip.

"The insured amount must cover you from the moment you leave home to the moment you return home. You cannot cover part of a trip," Gavin adds.

[Read: What Travel Credit Card Insurance Doesn't Cover .]

Also, the amount you insure must be specific. For example, if the total prepaid and nonrefundable cost of the trip is $2,893.28, then use that figure to calculate the price of the policy, don't round up.

How Much Is Cancel for Any Reason Travel Insurance?

If you want to add the CFAR benefit to your travel policy, how much more will it cost than a regular comprehensive travel insurance plan? According to Sandberg, standard trip cancellation coverage without CFAR typically costs between 4% and 10% of the insured trip. With CFAR, travelers can expect to pay another 50% to 60% of the standard policy cost.

Here is an example of how much travel insurance with the cancel for any reason benefit costs. (Prices were accurate at the time of publication.) The following rates are for a 40-year-old Florida resident traveling within the U.S. for one week in June, with a total trip expense of $3,000. The costs were calculated on TravelInsurance.com.

There were 24 plans available for a standard travel insurance policy. Rates ranged from a Silver Plan with one company (AXA) for as low as $77 and went as high as $231 for a Platinum Plan with another company (AIG - Travel Guard). Of course, the policy benefits varied depending on the price and the company.

Of the 24 options, only seven companies offered the cancel for any reason upgrade. AXA was one of them, but to apply for the CFAR option, the policy had to be upgraded to a Platinum Plan at $125. The additional upgrade charge for CFAR was $63 for a total of $188. One of the most expensive plans, from AIG -- Travel Guard, totaled $320.60 for the standard travel insurance policy plus the CFAR benefit.

How Much Can I Get Back with CFAR Coverage?

The typical reimbursement benefit is between 50% and 75% of the total insured costs. The rate of reimbursement will depend on several factors, including the length and value of the trip. It's best to compare all the plans available to determine the best benefits for the price and what will be the best travel insurance plan with cancel for any reason coverage for you.

You also need to follow the specific requirements to ensure that you are eligible for the reimbursement. Gavin reiterates that if you ever had to file a claim and say, the documentation surrounding the amount of the trip you insured wasn't precise, it could result in a denial of the claim.

"While there are advocates that can help and mitigate the situation to where they may make an exception, you don't want to be in that position," she says.

Cancel For Any Reason Travel Insurance Providers

Not every travel insurance company offers the cancel for any reason benefit, and the types of plans each insurance company provides vary by state.

Here are a few popular companies that currently offer the CFAR benefit:

-- AIG -- Travel Guard

-- AXA -- Assistance USA

-- CF -- Travel Insured International

-- John Hancock Travel Insurance

-- Nationwide

-- Seven Corners

-- TravelSafe

"Selling travel insurance has never been more important but has also never been so difficult. With an inundation of claims and differing state regulations, many companies are changing terms of new policies," says Jack Ezon, founder and managing partner of Embark Beyond, a premier luxury travel company based in New York. He explains further: "For example, Travelex just removed the ability to buy cancel for any reason on any policy."

[Read: Can You Cancel Your Flight Because of the Coronavirus? ]

As an example of how things in the insurance world can evolve, for the past 10 years New York state residents could not purchase CFAR coverage due to state regulations. This policy changed when Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced in early March that insurance companies in the state would be able to offer the cancel for any reason option. Six international and national companies have agreed to provide the benefit. However, it is not available yet through many of the online insurers. According to a spokesperson for InsureMyTrip.com, they have not received the CFAR product for New York as of yet. She said it will take several weeks to get these policies to market.

The Bottom Line

With so much uncertainty about how long this pandemic will last and how severe it will be, travel insurance with the added cancel for any reason benefit may be worth the investment to many travelers. While it is more expensive and it doesn't cover 100% of the cost of the trip, it will give travelers peace of mind knowing they can cancel if it's necessary.

As Ezon mentioned, if you're going to book a trip and want to insure it, know that the rules and state regulations are changing fast. It's very tempting to plan future travel with airfare, cruise and travel deals too good to pass up, but keep in mind it may be more difficult going forward to insure trips with the CFAR benefit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cancel for any reason insurance (also called CFAR coverage) is a type of trip cancellation insurance that lets you cancel your trip for a reason not listed as a covered reason in your plan. For example, you may decide not to travel due to an illness in your extended family or a specific financial issue you're dealing with. In either case, this time-sensitive coverage can help you get reimbursement for prepaid trip payments you have made toward airfare, hotel stays, tours and more.

CFAR coverage typically needs to be purchased within a sensitive period of time after making a trip deposit (usually ranging from 14 to 20 days after). Travelers only get back between 50% and 80% of prepaid travel expenses, depending on your policy, so this coverage won't lead to a full refund.

If you're worried how COVID-19 might affect your travel plans, you can purchase travel insurance that includes COVID-19 coverage . That said, CFAR protection can also be a good investment, particularly if you want the option to cancel based on last-minute disinclination to travel due to the coronavirus pandemic.

How to Claim Travel Insurance? A Comprehensive Beginner’s Guide (2022)

moneysmart

Nobody ever wants to make travel insurance claims unless they really, really have to. Why? Because it’s troublesome, lah .

It’ll always be a hassle to fill up forms and rustle up the required documents, but just like waxing your legs, if you already know exactly what to do and how to prepare, the entire process can be relatively quick and painless — easy-peasy !

  • Most common travel insurance claims
  • How to claim travel insurance [step by step guide]
  • Covid-19 travel insurance claims
  • How long do travel insurance claims take?
  • Travel insurance claims were rejected
  • Why your travel insurance claims were rejected

1. Common travel insurance claims

What is the most common travel insurance claim?

Think it’s loss of baggage? You’re way off.

If you were to guess medical expenses or personal accident, you’d be closer, but that would still not be the answer.

In actual fact, flight delays are what most travellers experience, and it’s not surprising, especially when you consider the preference for budget airline travel.

Flight delays

Let’s be fair here, flight delays could happen to anyone, due to a myriad of reasons. It could be a mechanical fault with the plane, bad weather, or naming your airline Scoot. Whatever the reason, flight delays can really put a damper on your plans.

Lost or Damaged Luggage

You hope it never happens to you, but when your luggage looks like everyone else’s (especially if all of you got it from the same credit card roadshow) there’s always a chance that someone else may have disappeared with your luggage. Alternatively, your suitcase may be too heavy for a tired, overworked airport staff to handle, and they may drop it, damaging the contents.

Luggage delayed

You’re lucky enough that your baggage isn’t lost, however, because a budget airline decided that your suitcase needed a short vacation away from you, you find yourself without clothes and more importantly, without your Macbook Pro for several hours! Leaving you to use… a PC at the hotel lobby. Such a travesty.

2. How do I make a travel insurance claim [Step-by-step guide]

So, the thing about travel insurance is that people only remember it when something unpleasant messes up our travel plans. Then, we panic and scramble when the insurer asks for things like the purchase receipt of a DSLR camera bought 6 years ago.

Sound familiar? If yes, here’s a pro-tip — be familiar with what you can and can’t claim for, and make sure you have a rough idea of the supporting documents needed.

It’s good practice to have a copy of your insurance policy on your phone, so you can always check it as and when you need, even on the go. Some travellers also have a habit of snapping photos of their luggage and belongings before the trip, just in case anything gets lost, delayed or damaged.

The exact claim procedure will depend on your insurance company, but generally, the process goes like this:

Step 1: Contact your insurance company as soon as possible

Depending on your policy, there is usually a time limit as to how long you can wait to give written notice about your intention to claim.

Usually it’s 30 days, but even then you shouldn’t be taking your time. Remember that you may need to get others involved, like the police or your GP, and that will take time.

Step 2: Download and fill up the travel insurance claim forms

Not all travel claims forms are made equal. Make sure you know what you’re claiming for – if you’re claiming on medical grounds, or if there was a delay or cancellation, or even if it’s both.

Choosing the right form is important because leaving any blanks in the form could cause delays in the claim process.

Also note that, for claims that are a result of illness, injury or death, you may need a GP or Specialist to fill up sections of the form for you. Yes, that means even if you’re claiming for travel cancellation due to sickness, you will need to get your GP or Specialist to certify that your illness did not exist, or that you were not aware of it, before booking the trip.

Step 3: Prepare your supporting documents

This is the biggest cause of delayed or rejected claims, so make sure you have everything you need before filing the claim.

Other than a completed claim form and a copy of the policy/certificate of insurance, you will also need to include your passport/itinerary to prove that you had travelled or at least made travel plans.

Then there’s a whole list of supporting documents you’ll need to provide depending on the type of claim you’re making.

Generally, if it requires a police report, you will need to report it to the local police within 24 hours of the incident.

Also, if you intend to claim for belongings that were damaged or stolen, you’d need to produce the original purchase receipts and photos of it to prove that you own these items.

If you are a hardcore “KonMari” fan and have tossed the receipts for all your fancy gadgets — cameras, laptops, etc — then it’s best not to travel with these items.

Step 4: Submit your claims documents online, in person or via snail mail

Once you’ve got everything you need, you can officially file the claim. Most insurers now have online platforms for easy submission, which is great for the younger, more tech-savvy crowd.

I’ve personally done medical expenses claims via FWD’s website and it was surprisingly fast and seamless.

For those who prefer to do it offline, you can either mail your documents over or head down to the branch office directly.

3. Covid-19 travel insurance claim

Travel insurance companies these days have extended their coverage for Covid-19, but at a cost. It’s usually a $20 to $40 dollar add-on, and you need to check if your insurer requires you to take and receive a negative PCR test result immediately after buying your policy.

In the event that you do catch Covid-19 before, during or after your trip, here are the things you need to do:

Read on: Your Ultimate Covid-19 Travel Insurance Claims Guide

4. How long do travel insurance claims take?

Typically, claims take a week to a month to be processed. The first thing to do is to make sure they’ve received your supporting documents.

If you haven’t heard anything from them in 2 weeks, you should definitely be pro-active and contact your insurer. The last thing you want to hear is that they hadn’t even started processing your claims because you left something out, and weren’t informed.

5. My travel insurance claims were denied and rejected

Should you appeal? Yes you should.

If your claims were denied, the insurer is obligated to provide you with a valid reason and the grounds for their decision. Once you get that, you can then request for claims appeal .

What happens moving forward depends on the insurer and how they handle your case, but let’s be honest here: there is always a conflict of interest when making an insurance claim.

Your agenda is to get as much compensation as possible. An insurance company’s agenda is to reduce your claim as much as possible. So yes, you can appeal, but it may not always be successful.

6. Mistakes causing your travel insurance claims to be rejected

So, you’ve bought travel insurance. Now it’s time to go skydiving and swimming with the sharks. Right? Not so fast.

Travel insurance isn’t a “get out of jail free” card that magically frees you from having to pay any expense you incur due to stupid mishaps.

In fact, if you actually take the time to read your travel insurance policy, you’ll realise that there’s actually a truckload of things you can do to get your claims thrown straight into the bin.

Here are 5 common travel mistakes that may cause your travel insurance claims to be rejected:

Playing in a competition or tournament

Participating in a seemingly harmless game of football may not exactly be as exciting as jumping off cliffs into the ocean, but suffer an injury during the game and you could well get your insurance claim for medical expenses rejected.

Read your insurance policy carefully to see if cover is excluded if you participate in a competition or tournament. Beware, as any sporting event that gives you the opportunity to win a prize might be considered a competition.

That means if someone punches your lights out during the drunken muay thai boxing event organised by that Thai pub, you won’t get covered.

Risky activities

Many Singaporean tourists flee the country to escape from boredom during the holidays, since there’s so much more fun stuff you can do overseas, like skydiving and bungee jumping !

But before you sign yourself up for that motorcycle drag race, know that many travel insurance will not cover you for injuries or losses suffered in the course of high risk activities, which often include flying planes for hobby or sightseeing, racing any kind of vehicle, skydiving, and even rock climbing on actual rocks, as opposed to artificial rock walls.

Consuming alcohol or drugs

Virtually everyone has gotten smashed overseas. Every day of the year, Singaporeans are spotted disembarking at the Phuket and Bangkok airports and heading straight to the duty free shop to buy a bottle of Martell. But guess what, if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you probably aren’t going to be able to make a claim for anything that happens to you during that time.

That means getting run over by a tuk tuk after a night out at the Thai discos is going to be even worse than you imagined. Bear in mind that your travel insurance covers more than just medical expenses. If you injure someone else and become liable at law or lose your passport while drunk or high, you will lose your chance to make some big claims.

Pre-existing medical conditions

The thing people are most concerned about when they buy travel insurance is making sure their medical expenses will be covered when they’re overseas. It’s worth noting that most basic travel insurance policies will not cover pre-existing medical conditions. As sinister as “ pre-existing medical conditions ” sounds, it isn’t restricted to deadly terminal diseases.

If you broke your leg two years ago and then break it again while you’re overseas, you might not be able to make a claim for medical expenses incurred. If you were recently injured or have a medical condition like diabetes or anaemia, you might want to consider upgrading your insurance so it includes pre-existing medical conditions, just in case something happens and you run into problems when trying to make a claim.

Not making a police report ASAP

Before you heave a sigh of relief that your insurance policy offers coverage if you lose your passport or laptop, beware. To make sure people don’t try to make claims for forgetting their stuff on the train or trying to pawn their belongings, most insurance policies require that you make a police report or contact the authorities within 24 hours of the loss.

This can be a pain in the neck if you’re in a remote area or you lose your stuff over a public holiday or weekend when the embassy is closed. Still, knowing you have a lot more to lose in insurance money, make sure you lodge a report by hook or by crook.

How to Find the Best Travel Insurance

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

What travel insurance covers

How much does travel insurance cost, types of travel insurance, how to get travel insurance, what to look for in travel insurance, best travel insurance comparison sites, which insurance company is best for travel insurance, when to skip travel insurance, travel insurance, recapped.

Travel insurance can cover medical expenses, emergencies, trip interruptions, baggage, rental cars and more.

Cost is affected by trip length, pre-existing medical conditions, depth of coverage, your age and add-ons.

You can get it through credit cards or third-party companies, & can shop on travel insurance comparison sites.

Before buying, evaluate risks, know existing coverage, obtain quotes online and review policy details warily.

Skip it if you buy flexible airfare and hotels, already have coverage or only book refundable activities.

Booking travel always carries some degree of uncertainty. Travel insurance provides a safety net so you can step out with confidence. You may not need travel insurance for inexpensive trips, but it can provide a sense of security when you prepay for pricey reservations, a big international trip or travel during cold and flu season, which can be unpredictable.

According to insurance comparison site Squaremouth, travelers in 2023 spent an average of $403 for comprehensive coverage, compared to $96 for medical-only policies. Comprehensive plans typically cost between 5% and 10% of the insured trip cost.

Since that price tag is no small amount, it helps to know how to shop smart for travel insurance. Here's how to find the right travel insurance plan for you and your next adventure.

Depending on the type of coverage you’re looking for, the chart below will help you determine what to look for when selecting a policy:

Depending on the policy, travel insurance reimburses you or offers services when something goes awry. There’s even coverage for the worst-case scenario: if you die in an accident while traveling. Accidental death coverage pays your beneficiary a lump sum in that case.

Before you buy, take a little time to get familiar with different types of travel insurance products, how it’s priced, and what it covers and excludes. If you’re traveling during these uncertain times, you’ll want to make sure that the policy you select covers coronavirus-related emergencies. Usually, the more thorough the coverage, the more it will cost.

Travel insurance costs vary depending on:

Length and cost of the trip: The longer and more expensive the trip, the higher the policy cost.

Cost of local health care: High health-care costs in your destination can drive up the price of trip insurance.

Medical conditions you want covered: Conditions you already have will increase the cost of travel insurance coverage.

Amount and breadth of coverage: The more risks a policy covers, the more it will cost.

Your age: Generally the older you are, the higher the price.

Any optional supplement you add to your policy : Cancel For Any Reason , Interrupt For Any Reason and more.

Keep these factors in mind when considering different travel insurance options.

You’ll find a wide selection of travel protection plans when you shop for a policy.

Typically, travel insurance is sold as a package, known as a comprehensive plan, which includes a variety of coverage.

Here are seven of the most common types of travel insurance:

Travel medical insurance

These plans provide health insurance while you’re away from home. Although in some ways these policies work like traditional health plans, generally you cannot use travel health insurance for routine medical events. For example, a routine medical checkup is usually not covered. In addition, these policies often include limitations on coverage and exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Although most travel insurance plans cover many recreational activities, such as skiing and horseback riding, they often exclude adventure sports, such as skydiving or parasailing, or competition in organized sporting events. You may need to buy a special travel policy designed for adventure or competitive sports.

International travel insurance

Most likely, your U.S.-based medical insurance will not work while you’re traveling internationally, and Medicare does not provide any coverage once you leave the United States outside of a few very specific exemptions. If you plan on traveling abroad, purchasing travel medical insurance could make a lot of sense.

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay

Trip cancellation coverage reimburses you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if the tour operator goes out of business or you have to cancel the trip for one of the covered reasons outlined in the policy, such as:

Your own illness.

The illness or death of a family member who’s not traveling with you.

Natural disasters.

Trip interruption insurance covers the nonrefundable cost of the unused portion of the trip if it is interrupted due to a reason outlined in the policy.

Trip delay coverage reimburses you for expenses such as lodging and meals if you’re delayed during a trip (e.g., your flight gets canceled due to weather ).

Many package policies cover all three. These policies are different from the cancellation waivers that cruise lines and tour operators offer, the Insurance Information Institute says. Waivers are cheap, ranging from $40 to $60, and often include restrictions. For example, according to the institute, waivers might not refund your money if you cancel immediately before departure. Waivers are technically not insurance policies.

Some companies offer additional layers of coverage at extra cost. “Cancel For Any Reason” coverage will reimburse a large part of the trip cost, no matter why you back out. And some companies let you pay extra to cover pre-existing conditions if you cancel for medical reasons.

Some insurers and comparison sites let you customize a policy by choosing types of coverage a la carte. For example, TravelInsurance.com is a comparison site that provides quotes from different providers.

Baggage and personal belongings

How does lost luggage insurance work? This coverage reimburses you for baggage and personal belongings that are lost, stolen or damaged during the trip. Some plans also reimburse you for extra expenses if you experience a baggage delay for more than a certain period, such as 12 hours.

Your renters or homeowners insurance may cover personal belongings while you are traveling. It’s best to review your homeowners insurance policy to determine the level of coverage it provides so you do not end up paying for a benefit you already have.

Emergency medical assistance, evacuation and repatriation

This coverage pays medical expenses if you get sick or injured on a trip . Medical evacuation coverage pays for transporting you to the nearest hospital, and medical repatriation pays for flying you to your home country.

» Learn more: Can I get travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions?

24-hour assistance

This service is included with many package plans. The insurer provides a 24-hour hotline that you can call when you need help, such as booking a flight after a missed connection, finding lost luggage, or locating a doctor or lawyer.

Generally, travel insurance companies do not cover sports or any activity that can be deemed risky. If you’re thinking of incorporating adventurous activities into your vacation, choose a plan that includes adventure sports coverage.

Most travel insurers cover a wide array of services, but the specific options vary. Some plans include concierge services, providing help with restaurant referrals, tee time reservations and more. Many services also offer information before the trip, such as required vaccinations. The only way to know what’s included is to read the policy.

» Learn more: Should you insure your cruise?

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance

This coverage pays a lump sum to your beneficiary, such as a family member, if you die in an accident while on the trip. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance policies also pay a portion of the sum to you if you lose a hand, foot, limb, eyesight, speech or hearing. Some plans apply only to accidental death in a plane.

This coverage may be duplicative if you already have sufficient life insurance, which pays out whether you die in an accident or from an illness. You may also already have accidental death and dismemberment insurance through work, so it's best to check your policies to ensure you’re not overpaying.

Rental car coverage

Rental car insurance pays for repairing your rental car if it’s damaged in a wreck, by vandals or in a natural disaster. The coverage doesn't include liability insurance, which pays for damage to other vehicles or for the medical treatment of others if you cause an accident and are held responsible.

Ask your car insurance company whether your policy will cover you when renting cars on the trip. U.S. car insurance policies generally don’t cover you when driving in other countries, except Canada.

Car insurance requirements are complex because they vary among countries. You can usually purchase liability insurance from the rental car company. Learn about car insurance requirements by searching for auto insurance by country on the U.S. Embassy website .

A note about single vs. long-term policies

Single trip insurance plans are a great option for those going on a single trip for a specific length of time (e.g., a two-week vacation) and then returning home. The price of the policy is usually determined by the cost of the trip.

Long-term travel policies cover you for multiple trips, but there are limitations to how long you can be away from home, if you can return home during your travels and how many trips you can take. In addition, trip cancellation and interruption coverage is either not offered or capped at a dollar amount that can be significantly below the total cost of all the trips taken during the covered period.

Long-term travel insurance plans — often called 'multi-trip' or 'annual travel insurance' — are a suitable option for those who travel often and are satisfied with the amount of trip cancellation coverage for all the trips they take over the duration of the policy.

Below, we include how to obtain travel insurance, along with the pros and cons of each option.

Some credit cards offer trip cancellation and rental car insurance if you use the card to book the trip or car.

When you book a trip with your credit card, depending on the card you use, you may already receive trip cancellation and interruption coverage.

Keep these tips in mind when you’re considering a trip insurance policy.

Evaluate the financial risks you face when traveling. Can you bear those costs yourself, or do you want insurance?

Examine what coverage you already have: Does your credit card offer travel insurance? Do you have renters or homeowners insurance to cover belongings? What is the deductible? Will your health plan cover you in all the locations where you travel?

Get quotes for trip insurance online. Choose a package of the benefits you need and compare prices for similar coverage among carriers.

Narrow your choices and then read the policy fine print to understand what’s covered, what’s excluded and the limits on coverage. You may find that the lowest-priced policy is too restrictive and that paying a little more gets you the coverage you need. Or you might find that the cheapest, most basic policy fits the bill.

There are a few scenarios when spending extra on travel insurance doesn't really make sense, like:

You booked flexible airline tickets.

Your hotel room has a good cancellation policy.

It's already included in your credit card.

You haven't booked any nonrefundable activities.

» Learn more: When you don't need travel insurance

Yes, especially for nonrefundable trips and travel during the COVID-era. Whether you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy or have travel insurance from your credit card, you shouldn't travel without having some sort of travel protection in place to safeguard you and your trip. Travel insurance can protect you in case of an unexpected emergency such as a canceled flight due to weather, a medical event that requires hospitalization, lost luggage and more.

There are many good travel insurance policies out there and a policy that may be great for you may not be good for someone else. Selecting the best plan depends on what coverage you would like and your trip details.

For example, World Nomads offers a comprehensive travel insurance policy that has excellent coverage for adventure sports. Allianz provides coverage for trips of varying lengths of time through its single trip plans and multi-trip plans. Some providers offer add-on options like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance. If you’re not sure which plan to go with, consider looking at trip insurance comparison sites like Squaremouth or Insuremytrip.

Yes, you can. However, it's better to purchase it sooner rather than later, ideally right after booking your trip because the benefits begin as soon as you purchase a policy.

Let’s say you’re going on a trip in a month and a week before departure, you fall and break your leg. If you’ve purchased a travel insurance policy, you can use your trip cancellation benefits to get your nonrefundable deposit back.

Most comprehensive travel insurance plans offer trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical and dental, medical evacuation, trip delay and lost luggage coverage. Many plans offer COVID coverage, but you’ll always want to check to ensure that the policy you choose provides that benefit if you’re traveling during these times. Some plans may also allow you to add features like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance.

It depends which credit card you have. Premium travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and The Platinum Card® from American Express offer travel insurance benefits if you book a trip using your card or points.

However, the coverage provided by the credit cards is usually lower than if you purchased a standalone policy. Review the travel insurance benefits on your credit card and check that the limits are adequate before foregoing from purchasing a separate plan.

Best Cancel for Any Reason Travel Insurance of 2024

See which insurers are the best for affordability, coverage, and more

If you’re a frequent traveler, having travel insurance can be valuable. But if you need to cancel a trip, your policy will only refund your prepaid expenses due to certain circumstances. Adding cancel for any reason (CFAR) travel insurance to your policy covers many cancellation causes that normally are not covered, like last-minute work obligations or safety concerns.

To help you choose the best cancel for any reason travel insurance, we evaluated 18 companies based on 28 criteria. Some of the factors we looked at include the maximum CFAR reimbursement rates (20% of the score), premiums (17.5%), number of policy types available (7.5%), and trip cancellation coverage amounts (5%).

All premiums mentioned are based on a $3,500, 10-day trip from Florida to Costa Rica for two same-aged travelers. We gathered quotes for four different ages: 28, 40, 55, and 70.

Best Overall: USI Affinity

Get a Quote

Why We Chose It

With seven cancel for any reason plans available and the cheapest CFAR plan premiums, USI Affinity is our top choice for travelers.

Pros & Cons

Lowest premiums for CFAR policies

Offers seven CFAR policy options

No pet medical coverage

Kids aren’t covered for free

USI Affinity offered the most CFAR policy options—seven—out of the 18 cancel for any reason travel insurance companies we reviewed.

Additionally, USI Affinity offered the lowest CFAR premium of any company we researched: $121. The company’s highest plan premium was $200, which is also among the lowest rates we found during our research.

CFAR plans from USI Affinity include 75% reimbursement, with a maximum trip cancellation reimbursement of $150,000 for covered events and up to $250,000 in medical coverage per person, per trip.

  • Lowest CFAR premium: $121
  • Highest CFAR premium: $200

Best Reimbursement Rate: Allianz Travel Insurance

Cancel for any reason travel insurance from Allianz will provide up to 80% reimbursement for non-refundable travel costs.

Maximum reimbursement of 80%

Kids under 17 are covered for free

$200,000 limit for covered cancellations

Low coverage limit for travel delays

Limited coverage for medical expenses

No missed connections coverage

If you spend a lot of money on trips, a CFAR plan from Allianz can be a good choice.

Allianz offers up to 80% reimbursement for eligible travel expenses if you need to cancel for uncovered reasons, which was the highest rate of any of the insurers we analyzed. Additionally, Allianz’s  $200,000 trip cancellation coverage (for covered cancellations) was among the highest we found during research.

Although Allianz offers the most coverage for trip reimbursement, its CFAR plans have some limitations worth noting. For example, there’s no coverage for missed connections or pet medical expenses.

Allianz will only provide CFAR insurance if you insure the full cost of your trip within 14 days of making your first trip payment.

  • Lowest CFAR premium : $261
  • Highest CFAR premium : $315

Most Affordable Premiums for Upgraded Plans: Tin Leg

If you want a cancel for any reason travel insurance policy with the best features and the most coverage, Tin Leg is a great choice because it offers the lowest premiums for its upgraded plans.

Lowest premium for upgraded plans

Up to $500,000 in medical coverage

Doesn’t offer multi-trip coverage

No annual plans

Out of the best CFAR companies on our list, Tin Leg has the lowest premiums for its upgraded CFAR plans. The highest plan premium from Tin Leg is just under $200.

Another thing we like about Tin Leg is that it has the highest amount of coverage for medical expenses. The maximum amount of medical coverage is $500,000 per person, per trip. There were only six insurers we reviewed that offered that much coverage.

Despite the benefits of Tin Leg, this CFAR insurance provider also has some downsides. The plans don’t include pet medical coverage, and kids aren’t covered for free.

Berkshire Hathaway offered a slightly lower premium than Tin Leg for its top-tier plan. However, the company’s overall score was below average and higher than just five of the other 17 companies. Therefore, we kept the insurer out of our rankings.

  • Lowest CFAR premium: $145.55
  • Highest CFAR premium: $199.50

HTH will only reimburse a maximum of $50,000 in trip cancellation costs for covered events, which is the lowest coverage limit out of the best companies on our list. In addition, it doesn’t offer annual plans, and the one CFAR travel insurance plan available doesn’t cover multiple trips. Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the Difference Between Trip Cancellation and Cancel for Any Reason?

Trip cancellation is a standard part of travel insurance that covers the cost of non-refundable travel if you have to cancel a trip for a specific reason, including illness, injury, or death. Cancel for any reason insurance is something you add to a policy to cover cancellations that don’t qualify for trip cancellation. For example, if you have to cancel a trip at the last second because your fear of flying overwhelms you a couple of days before your flight,  CFAR allows you to cancel, no questions asked. Another key difference is that trip cancellation insurance typically offers a maximum dollar amount your policy pays out, whereas CFAR reimbursements you a percentage of your non-refundable trip costs.

What Is Cancel for Any Reason Coverage?

Cancel for any reason coverage is a type of insurance coverage you can add to a travel insurance policy that will cover you for cancellation reasons that aren’t covered by your travel insurance. CFAR insurance reimburses you a percentage of your non-refundable travel costs, often 50% to 75%.

How Much Does Cancellation Insurance Cost?

Cancel for any reason insurance can cost you anywhere from 10% to 40% of your travel insurance premium. For example, during our research, we found adding CFAR to a Travel Guard policy that cost $169.29 would add an extra $38.08.

Can You Buy Cancel for Any Reason Insurance After 21 Days?

In most cases, travel insurance companies will require you to buy your CFAR insurance within 14 to 21 days of your first payment for the trip.

Methodology

Narrowing down the best cancel for any reason travel insurance companies means analyzing aspects of travel insurance that are most important to travelers.

With that in mind, we examined 18 top travel insurance companies across the following 16 categories:

  • CFAR reimbursement rate (20% of score) : Companies with higher reimbursement rates for CFAR coverage received the highest scores.
  • Premiums (17%) ; We analyzed the highest and lowest premiums offered by a company, weighting the two premiums equally.
  • Policy types available (7.5%) : Having a choice of plans to pick from can ensure you aren’t paying for coverage you don’t need. Companies with more options scored higher.
  • Free look period length (5%) : A free-look period is an invaluable part of buying insurance. Companies with longer free-look periods received higher scores.
  • Pre-existing condition coverage (5%) : Companies that offered medical coverage for pre-existing conditions scored higher than those that didn’t.
  • Maximum coverage for emergency transportation (5%) : Evacuation out of a country for medical reasons can be costly, so we scored companies higher if they had higher emergency transportation limits.
  • Maximum baggage coverage (5%) : Companies that offer higher coverage limits for lost and damaged baggage score higher.
  • Maximum medical coverage (5%) : Medical coverage for injuries you sustain while traveling can offset potentially expensive hospital bills.
  • Adventure sports coverage (5%) : Provides coverage if you participate in adventure sports during your trip.
  • Sports and activity coverage (5%) : Because vacations typically include new activities or participation in sports, it can be helpful to have travel insurance that covers injuries you sustain during those activities.
  • Maximum travel delay coverage (5%) : Travel delay coverage can help you cover the cost of lodging and food if you’re stranded due to, for example, a canceled flight or train ride.
  • Maximum trip cancellation coverage (5%) : If you have to cancel a trip for covered reasons (CFAR insurance covers cancellations not otherwise covered by your insurance), a high coverage limit can help offset some or all of your non-refundable trip costs.
  • AM Best rating (2.5%) : A high AM Best rating means a company is very likely to pay out a claim in the near future, so companies with higher ratings scored higher.
  • Maximum trip interruption reimbursement rate (2.5%) : Companies that offered higher reimbursement amounts in the event of a trip interruption earned higher scores in this category.
  • Multi-trip coverage (2.5%) : Avid travelers can benefit from multi-trip coverage, and may be able to save money by booking one insurance package as opposed to a separate policy for each trip.
  • No extra charge for a child: (2.5%) : Companies that offered to include at least one child in their CFAR insurance policies received higher scores than those that didn’t.

For an in-depth look at the benefits of Travel Insured International’s travel insurance, take a look at the highlights below.

Bottom line: Main highlights of Travel Insured International travel insurance

One of Travel Insured International’s main benefits is its flexibility.

The provider offers a wide range of plans for travelers to choose from. Some plans even offer free coverage for children , making this a great option for families.

Travel Insured International plans offer primary coverage with high medical and medical evacuation limits , thus casting a wide net of protection should an incident occur and giving you greater peace of mind in light of unexpected events.

Travel Insured International offers three single-trip insurance policies through our comparison tool .

These plans vary in specific coverage, though they all offer compensation for trip cancellation, delays, medical evacuations and lost baggage.

Travel Insured International

Here’s a quick overview of each plan and its range of coverage:

Worldwide Trip Protector:

This plan comes with numerous benefits, including 100% trip cancellation, 150% trip interruption, $100,000 for medical expenses, emergency medical evacuation coverage and missed connection protection. It’s a good plan for well-rounded coverage that includes many common travel mishaps.

Worldwide Trip Protector Plus:

This policy also offers 100% trip cancellation coverage , 150% trip interruption and $100,000 for medical expenses. Other benefits are cancel for any reason and interrupt for any reason coverage (CFAR and IFAR, respectively), meaning you can be reimbursed if your trip is cut short or called off. Also included is rental car damage protection, which can be added to the other two plans for an additional fee. Though more expensive, this option is good for those who want an extra layer of protection.

Worldwide Trip Protector Edge:

Included in this plan is 100% trip cancellation, 100% trip interruption, $10,000 for medical expenses, $100,000 for medical evacuation and $750 for baggage protection. Some benefits, like those for medical expenses and evacuation, can be increased with an optional upgrade. Though it has fewer benefits than the previous two plans, this budget-friendly policy is customizable for those who want more control over their coverage.

Here is a brief look at how each plan differs:

Travel Insured International also offers one annual multi-trip travel insurance policy , the Annual Multi-Trip Protector. This policy includes coverage for medical expenses and evacuation as well as typical post-departure benefits like trip interruption and loss of personal belongings. Unlike single-trip coverage, this policy has an extended term and protects any trip you take during that window.

Optional add-ons

For greater protection during your trip, Travel Insured International offers several add-on benefits . These aren’t typically included in standard insurance policies but will extend coverage even further for an additional fee. Here are four upgrades you can add to your plan:

Cancel for any reason (CFAR)

Even with extensive planning, sometimes a trip must be unexpectedly canceled. To protect against surprise cancellations, consider adding cancel for any reason coverage  to your travel insurance plan. With this benefit, you’re eligible for reimbursement of nonrefundable trip costs that aren’t otherwise covered by your policy.

Rental car damage coverage

This optional add-on keeps you protected in the event your rental car is damaged or stolen. Covered damage includes collisions, vandalism, natural disasters and any other situation beyond your control that occurs while the car is in your possession. If you plan to rent a car during your trip, this add-on might be a worthy addition to your insurance policy. At Travel Insured International, the maximum benefit amount for rental car coverage ranges from $25,000 to $50,000.

Event ticket registration fee protection

If a ticketed event is part of your trip itinerary, you might consider adding registration fee protection to your travel insurance plan. This optional coverage can be tacked on to any Worldwide Trip Protector policy and will reimburse you for the cost of unused event tickets or registration fees. To be eligible, your tickets must be listed as nonrefundable by their distributor, and your reason for not attending the event must be on the list of covered unforeseen circumstances. If this is the case, you may receive up to $1,000 worth of reimbursements.

Cancel for work reasons

Unexpected work obligations can put a hold on your travel plans, potentially leaving you at a financial loss. If you think work might pull you away from your trip, extra coverage for work-related cancellations may be a useful addition to your plan. With this add-on, the full cost of your trip can be reimbursed, assuming your situation falls under the list of covered scenarios, which includes being required to work on the trip. For this coverage, the maximum benefit amount is 75% of the total trip cost.

Like any travel insurance policy, some benefits aren’t included in Travel Insured International’s plans.

Depending on the policy you choose, things that aren’t covered include:

  • Loss of audio or visual aids, like eyeglasses, contacts or hearing aids
  • Injuries caused by self-harm
  • Losses incurred while you were under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Injuries caused by participation in extreme activities (think skydiving)
  • Routine check-ups or dental exams
  • Mental health emergencies, unless they require hospitalization

According to our sales data, visitors who purchased a Travel Insured International plan through our website spend an average of $102 for travel insurance for a two-week trip. This equates to an average cost of $8.58 per day for travel insurance .

To give you a better idea of how much plans from Travel Insured International cost, we got multiple quotes for each plan to five different countries and found the average cost for each.

Average Cost of Travel Insured International Plans

While these serve as an estimate, keep in mind that these numbers are for example purposes only, and your own costs will vary based on the specific parameters of your trip. We recommend getting a quote for updated pricing.

Methodology for reaching these averages:

We applied the following parameters to each quote:

  • Total trip cost : $2,000
  • Trip duration : Seven days
  • Time of trip : September 2024
  • Destinations: The Bahamas , Italy , Mexico , Thailand , & Kenya

On Squaremouth , Travel Insured International has more than 3,300 reviews with an overall rating of 4.39 out of five .

Here’s what customers like and dislike about Travel Insured International.

What customers like

Customers have plenty of good things to say about Travel Insured International. Some commonly mentioned positives are:

  • Flexibility
  • Comprehensive policies
  • Knowledgeable staff

“Very knowledgeable staff when you call. Have used before and will use again. Very flexible options from medical only to full trip cancelation coverage.” -  Howard

“The settlement was exactly as we had expected based on our documentation and receipts.” -  Kathleen

What customers don’t like

Some customers had less-than-stellar experiences. Some frequently mentioned areas for improvement include:

  • Hard-to-reach customer service
  • Tedious claims process
  • Miscommunication

“Horrible customer service. Took days for a reply to email. Never was able to get it resolved before I left.” -  Kathryn

“Our trip was interrupted due to COVID. I expected some help from their “concierge” line, but after waiting 50 minutes on hold I received nothing except “file a claim once you’re home.” Literally zero help arranging alternate transportation or hotel.” -  Joseph

Overall, Travel Insured International is undoubtedly a high-quality travel insurance provider.

With a thorough range of benefits and an extensive list of optional add-ons, it’s clear why the company is a top-rated insurance provider among travelers. Its three policies each cover a standard selection of vacation mishaps, including trip cancellation and interruption, medical expenses and lost baggage.

If you’re looking for an excellent range of coverage with customizable add-ons and family-friendly prices, Travel Insured International may be the right provider for your next trip . If you’re looking for higher maximum limits and easier claims processes, however, you might be better off looking elsewhere for your travel insurance.

What is covered under Travel Insured International insurance?

The policies offered by Travel Insured International vary in coverage. Depending on your chosen plan, you can expect insurance benefits designed to protect your health, finances and personal belongings.

Covered items include:

  • Trip cancellation and interruption
  • Missed connections
  • Rewards points reimbursement
  • Nonmedical evacuation
  • Accident and sickness expenses
  • Lost or stolen baggage
  • Baggage delay

Does Travel Insured International travel insurance cover COVID-19?

Yes, COVID-19 is included in Travel Insured International’s coverage . This insurance provider treats COVID-19 as it would any other sickness, meaning you’re covered for a range of losses that it might lead to. This includes things like trip interruption or cancellation, medical evacuation and medical expenses. For some plans, medical insurance terms require the COVID-19 diagnosis to be confirmed by a physician rather than relying on the results of an at-home test.

The same guidelines that dictate whether an illness counts as a pre-existing condition apply to cases of COVID-19. If your chosen plan includes a pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver , any losses that occur are likely to be covered.

Does Travel Insured International offer ‘cancel for any reason’ coverage?

Cancel for any reason coverage, or CFAR, is available as an optional add-on to most plans at Travel Insured International. Under this coverage, you’re eligible for reimbursement of any unused, nonrefundable payments or deposits you made when planning your trip. If your trip is canceled for reasons not otherwise covered in the plan, you can recover a portion of the trip cost up to the set maximum benefit amount.

CFAR applies only when it’s added to your plan during a specified time period and the trip is canceled no later than 48 hours before your scheduled departure. It’s important to note that this doesn’t cover travel arrangements paid for but not provided by a third-party travel agency.

Does Travel Insured International have international travel insurance?

Yes, Travel Insured International offers travel insurance for international trips. This means your coverage will remain in effect when you’re outside your home country, so any sickness or accidents you incur abroad are likely eligible for coverage. Some benefits, like emergency medical evacuation, are included specifically for international travelers.
