As Texas’ biggest city, Houston is one of the state’s most popular tourist destinations. In addition to housing NASA's Space Center, the city is known for its impressive museums, sprawling parks, and diverse food scene. If you live in Dallas or just happen to be in the area, you can get to the city in about 3.5 hours, as Houston is conveniently 293 miles (472 kilometers) away. There are a few different ways to make the trip, making for a feasible weekend getaway.

There are a few bus line operators that offer direct and non-direct services from Dallas to Houston: FlixBus, Megabus, and Greyhound. Flying, too, can be quick and convenient (and relatively affordable, depending on when you book). There are three carriers that offer nonstop flights from Dallas to Houston, including American, United, and Southwest. Nonstop flights take just a little over an hour, and a round-trip ticket typically costs anywhere from $150 to $300. The drive from city to city is an easy, straight shot along I-45, as long as you’re not traveling during rush hour. 

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Dallas to Houston?

The bus is the most affordable mode of transportation—especially if you would need to rent a car in order to get from one city to the next. Not to mention, public transportation is the more eco-friendly option.

FlixBus operates a bus from downtown Dallas to downtown Houston every 3 hours, with one-way tickets ranging from $9 to $19. Greyhound, on the other hand, runs buses every 4 hours, and one-way tickets start at $30. Buses depart from the Greyhound station at 205 S Lamar Street.

Megabus offers two services a day. There are two Megabus pick-up stations : the DART East Transfer Center and 710 Davie Street, in Grand Prairie. The bus arrives at the south corner of 4th Street and Broadway in Dallas. One-way fares start at $20, while round-trip tickets typically range from $30 to $40.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Dallas to Houston?

The flight from Dallas to Houston is relatively painless in terms of time and ease; flight duration is just over an hour, though this does not account for the time it takes to get to and from the airport, check your bags, and go through security. Flying is usually the most expensive option, but this might be your preferred mode of transportation if you like to read or work in transit.

The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is massive, with five terminals and seven runways. For nearly four decades, Texans have asked for a bullet train to connect the state's largest cities.

After all, Texas is big, and it can take hours to get from any major Texas city to another. On its worst days, even the 35-mile trek from Dallas to Fort Worth can take hours.

Since December, it seems to become a greater reality for Texans.

As part of a nationwide high-speed rail initiative, President Joe Biden announced on Dec. 8 the allocation of $8.2 billion in new grants for these projects, including $500,000 toward Amtrak's high-speed railway in Texas.

What is the high-speed railway project?

High-speed railway transportation, also known as bullet trains, can travel at speeds of up to 200 mph.

In Texas, the initiative would connect the state's two largest cities, Dallas and Houston, shortening the travel time from hours to 90 minutes. Nearly 100,000 residents travel the 240-mile journey between the two cities each week — and some even more frequently, according to a 2012 study conducted by NYU's Rudin Center for Transportation.

With stations planned at The Cedars neighborhood near Downtown Dallas and the Northwest Mall site in Houston, the train would depart every 30 minutes during peak periods each day and hourly during off-peak periods, according to Texas Central , a Dallas-based company that devised the plan. The train would also make one stop along the route in Grimes County.

In an interview with CNBC , Congressman Seth Moulton, D-Mass, who served as the former managing director at Texas Central, emphasized the urgent need for the project as Texas' population grows.

“If you don’t build high-speed rail between Dallas and Houston, then you only have two options,” Rep. Moulton said in the interview. “You can either expand the airport or expand the highway. It’s not going to decrease the travel time between those cities. It’s still going to take at least three hours to get between Dallas and Houston.”

How much will the Texas bullet train cost?

According to an estimate from the Reason Foundation, the project is expected to cost at least $33.6 billion.

Why is the bullet train project controversial?

Stretching approximately 240 miles, the railway will go through private property.

In 2022, the Texas Supreme Court determined that Texas Central, a private entity, met the legal criteria to be classified as a public interurban electric railway company. As a result, the court granted the company the power of eminent domain, enabling it to proceed with construction on private land for the project.

These private properties include residences, in addition to farms and ranches.

One Dallas-based farmer told CNBC that he struggles to sleep at night worrying that the high-speed rail could pass through his property.

“When I was notified by my nephew through an article about eminent domain, I was absolutely shocked,” Jody Berry said in the interview. “Finding out that the high-speed rail could potentially go through our property has made it very difficult for me to sleep."

Berry's family has operated Morney-Berry Farms, which sits along the route, for several generations.

High-speed railway progresses towards a 200-mph train line from dallas to houston.

High-speed rail is a standard form of transport in places like Germany, France, Italy, China, Japan, and Switzerland, but with any luck at all, it should be coming to the Lone Star State before long.

Texas Central has progressed through the planning stage and settled landowning disputes regarding a high-speed railway line from Dallas to Houston, which usually requires a 2-hour flight, a 4-hour drive, or a 5-hour bus ride.

However, at 200 miles per hour, the projected time would be a mere 90 minutes, departing every half hour during peak times and every hour off-peak.

“If we are going to add more high-speed rail to this country, the Dallas to Houston Corridor is a compelling proposition and offers great potential,” said Amtrak Senior Vice President of High-Speed Rail Development Programs Andy Byford.

“We believe many of the country’s biggest and fastest-growing metropolitan areas, like Houston and Dallas, deserve more high quality high-speed, intercity rail service.”

The project isn’t a given yet, but after years of what Engineering News Record called “financial setbacks, leadership issues, and legal woes,” it is moving forward again with plans for 50% of the 236 miles of rails to be on viaducts to help ease landowners’ concerns; although the Texas Supreme Court has already determined that Texas Central has eminent domain authority regarding their proposed route.

“In big complex infrastructure projects, it’s better to have issues during the planning phase” than construction, Angel Pena, vice president for rail and transit at the development firm STV’s Texas/Mountain region. “Planning is the most challenging part of the process.”

Amtrak and Texas Central have submitted applications to several federal programs in connection with further study and design work for the potential Dallas to Houston segment, including the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure Safety and Improvements (CRISI) grant program, the Corridor Identification and Development program, and the Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail (FSP-National) grant program.

These should help Texas Central address the ballooning costs of the project which unfortunately are projected to hover around $33 billion.

Texas is bigger than all the countries mentioned above, and in most places is much flatter too. The Midwest seems to lend itself to high-speed rail, which is truly the most pleasurable way to travel. For anyone who hasn’t seen the countryside go by at 200 miles per hour of silence and comfort, it’s an amazing experience.

Future of Dallas to Houston high-speed train may be derailed

NORTH TEXAS -   Plans for a high-speed train between Dallas and Houston have a lot of support. 

But what it will look like when it passes through Downtown Dallas on its way to Arlington and Fort Worth received some harsh criticism Wednesday when the city council saw it for the first time. 

The design plans show what a $5 billion development around Reunion Tower in Downtown Dallas could eventually look like. 

But Hunt Realty Investments, which is behind the project, says a proposed 75-foot high, elevated high-speed train cutting right through the middle of it would be "an ugly scar" and put the proposed development "at serious risk."

"The last thing that I want to see is our most iconic building in the city of Dallas, which is Reunion Tower to be dissected," said Jesse Moreno, Dallas City Council District 2.

Moreno is also concerned about the proposed route of the elevated train which would connect Houston, Dallas, Arlington and Fort Worth. 

"At this time I do not support the current alignment that would be above ground for the City of Dallas," Moreno said.

During its weekly meeting, the city council was told the route, just past Reunion Tower and the Hyatt Regency Hotel, is necessary so Amtrak passengers from other cities can board at Union Station. 

"I want you to picture coming out of Union Station, grabbing your suitcases crossing Interstate 30 and getting to a high-speed rail station, versus you have a seamless connection," said Michael Morris, the director of the North Central Texas Council of Governments Transportation.

But most on the council weren't buying into it. 

"I think the project as proposed is largely missing the mark," said Adam Bazaldua, Dallas City Council District 7.

Hunt Realty says the train would not only pose a threat to its mixed-use project of homes, offices, retail and hotels but also would negatively impact the nearby $3 billion convention center the city plans to build. 

In a statement to CBS News Texas, its president, Colin Fitzgibbons said, "...we believe that public monies would be better spent on projects that allow Dallasites to travel from where they live to where jobs exist rather than spending billions of dollars of public money for highly-questionable mega-projects that are not relevant to most Dallasites."

The council will get another update in a few months. 

But the concerns brought up Wednesday threaten to further delay an already slow project.

DALLAS, Texas (KBTX) -Amtrak says they’re continuing to explore the path forward as they look to connect the cities of Houston and Dallas, and potentially Fort Worth.

However, there is some skepticism. The railway recently joined the Dallas City staff and the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) for nearly five hours to brief the Dallas City Council on the project.

Council members heard from Andy Byford, Amtrak’s Vice President of High-Speed Rail to learn more about the feasibility of the proposed high-speed train route from Dallas to Houston. When asked if the project was still feasible Byford said yes.

“We were invited in by Texas Central to see if the project is still viable as that’s why we did further market research we believe that it is,” said Byford. “But having a viable project and having the funding and the political assent to proceed with the project are two different things.”

Amtrak’s presentation states that the project fulfills its aim of meeting high travel demand between cities, connecting Amtrak, Dallas’s DART, the Trinity Railroad Express, and Houston’s Metrorail. The cities are also well-spaced to allow for limited stops. However, obtaining a right of way and securing funding are still pending.

Amtrak also highlighted recent successes that make the Dallas-to-Houston route viable. They stated that Amtrak successfully secured federal funding and is actively engaged in the FRA Corridor Identification Program. Additionally, they mentioned ongoing grant applications, running parallel to the development of funding packages, with the potential for financial closure by 2025.

However, some council members remained unconvinced about the Dallas-to-Fort Worth route, pointing to a 2017 FRA study showing a then $12 billion cost with only a 30-second time savings over other options.

“It would cost $12 billion and it would save only 30 seconds as compared to the Trinity Railway Express,” said District 14 Councilmember Paul Ridley. “That to me does not justify the i-30 corridor. It does not justify, in fact, it argues against any high-speed rail as being basically a public works boondoggle.”

City leaders are divided on the proposed location near Amtrak’s Union Station, weighing both its advantages and disadvantages. On a positive note, it provides a seamless connection. The federal government approved the station in Cedars back in 2017. However, there are uncertainties regarding its potential impact on a new convention center and a planned 25-acre, multibillion-dollar development centered around the iconic Reunion Tower.

Hunt Realty Investments owns 25 acres near the convention center and has revealed intentions to construct a $5 billion mixed-use development. They told our affiliate CBS Dallas their belief that their plans and the rail line cannot coexist. They argue that a proposed 75-foot-high, elevated high-speed train running through the middle would create an “ugly scar” and jeopardize the proposed development, putting it “at serious risk.”

“For me, there’s some givens on Reunion I find like, like I do about this building that it’s an iconic Dallas building. We’ve heard that it could be threatened with this alignment,” said District 11 Councilwoman Jaynie Schultz.

NCTCOG Transportation Director Michael Morris thought there was a solution, even though it wasn’t ideal.

“If there’s some issue between the Hyatt Regency and looking east to downtown, we simply go on the west side of the Hyatt Regency. But you probably wouldn’t be making all those intermodal connections ‘cause the route is nowhere close to Union Station,” said Morris.

However, Amtrak officials warned the council that alterations to the proposed station location could setback the project and escalate costs.

“With all the permits that we’ve got, the ROD that’s in place, the environmental assessments being done, that, to me, is a massive reopening and will put the entire project at risk,” said Byford.

Despite the challenges, some council members are endorsing the high-speed rail project.

“This is something that, if we are the epicenter of high-speed rail for the entire United States, can take Dallas into a trajectory that I can’t even imagine. We need to look at other countries that have had this technology for decades. We are finally catching up,” said District 6 Councilmember Omar Narvaez.

Looking ahead, a year-long environmental study has started. The group told councilmembers they’re committed to ongoing research on the economic impacts of high-speed rail. They plan to incorporate findings into future City Council briefings and hope to reach a consensus or potential resolutions in support of high-speed rail initiatives soon. High-speed rail operators are expected to go back before the council in a few months.

Joe Biden returning to Dallas, Houston this week

J ust weeks after touring the Texas border, President Joe Biden is headed back to the Lone Star State for a pair of fundraising events.

The Democrat is scheduled to be in Dallas on Wednesday and Houston on Thursday, according to a White House advisory. No further details of either event have been released publicly.

It’s part of a ramped-up travel schedule since Biden delivered his State of the Union address this month. Since then, he’s made trips to Wisconsin and Michigan and will be in Nevada and Arizona to start the week before heading to Texas.

Biden has been to Texas six times during his term in the White House. His most recent trip was Feb. 29 to Brownsville , where he toured the border, received a briefing from officials with the Department of Homeland Security and blasted Republicans for their opposition to a bipartisan border security bill that failed in the Senate last month.

Biden’s last trip to Houston was in February 2021 as the state tried to recover from winter storms that killed hundreds of people and left millions without power. During that trip, he met with Gov. Greg Abbott and promoted COVID-19 vaccination programs near NRG Stadium.

Vice President Kamala Harris was  in Houston in November for a fundraiser and for an event with U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo; they talked about health care issues facing Texans.

Apart from the delay due to unforeseen circumstances. The leg from sjc to dfw was fine. It was the leg from dfw to orf that we encountered issues mainly due to the flight attendant crew not being friendly. One made a remark that the baby’s dirty diaper smell was a “gift” to the plane in a rude way. We were met with rudeness on the second leg. Whereas on the first leg the crew were so nice and helpful.

Spirit need to stop nickel and dime for every thing. Next time I am flying Southwest Airlines. This was my first time with Spirit.

The issue I have is when we landed in Vegas (Dallas to Vegas). It seems as if we were traveling too fast during landing. I’m not sure what is was but it seems as if the nose of plane banged the ground making a loud bam nose. We went back into the air instantly. It took about 5 minutes for the pilot or someone to say a wind drift caused the hard landing, and that we would land in about 5 minutes. Many of us passengers did not believe the reason given. The second attempt was much smoother but this does not make me want to fly spirit again. The flight from Detroit to Dallas was fine.

Had to check in my very expensive survey equipment on the bottom of the plane and still cost me $330 dollars.

High-speed rail: Dallas to Houston should go full steam ahead

But plan for fort worth line should be paused..

Dallas is poised to pour a lot of money into the southwest corner of downtown in the next few years. City officials plan to break ground on a new $3 billion convention center this year, and plans for a bullet train with a terminus in the Cedars neighborhood are also chugging along.

It’s crucial that our city gets these projects right . For Dallas, that means focusing on a high-speed rail line to Houston, another Texas economic hub and the largest city in the state. A bullet train between our city and Houston would cut down the commute to two hours instead of the four hours it takes door to door if you fly or drive.

The City Council is right to resist pressure to commit to a separate plan that would build an extension from downtown Dallas to Fort Worth. Extending the alignment westward along the Interstate 30 corridor would impact valuable land downtown and in West Dallas. Of specific concern is the creation of an unacceptable physical barrier along the western edge of downtown. That impact isn’t a good trade for a slightly faster trip to Fort Worth. Based on the planning that is now public, the city of Dallas should not agree to the proposed alignment for high speed rail to Fort Worth.

Last week, Andy Byford, senior vice president of high-speed rail development programs at Amtrak and former president of New York City Transit Authority, briefed the Dallas council . He confirmed that Amtrak is working on high-speed rail between Dallas and Houston.

Byford’s statements are reassuring and can help our city regain focus when it comes to high-speed rail. For years, the project had been struggling as the private company in charge of it, Texas Central, faced challenges from rural landowners along the alignment and internal struggles.

When Dallas to Houston seemed all but dead in 2019, the North Central Texas Council of Governments — which coordinates federal transportation spending — began developing its plan for a Dallas-to-Fort Worth line. The Council of Governments planned the route around the elevated station in the Cedars that had been federally cleared for the Dallas to Houston project. This meant that in Dallas city limits, the train would travel at around 70 feet above the ground, blocking views in downtown and West Dallas and dividing neighborhoods, as elevated freeways do. This is inconsistent with the rest of the route where stations in downtown Arlington and downtown Fort Worth would be underground.

The Dallas-Houston route wouldn’t run into this problem because the line terminates in the Cedars and the train will run parallel to Interstate 45 for most of the journey.

The Fort Worth extension, which is estimated to cost around $6 billion, has been treated like a political football. Council members said that Council of Governments officials shared complex white papers and schematics of the train just 24 hours before slated briefings. Michael Morris, North Central Texas Council of Governments transportation department head, pointed to a document the City Council had signed back in 2015 agreeing to a “one-seat ride” to marshalconsensus for the project. But council member Chad West pointed out that the previous council had agreed to a conceptual plan when the projects were entirely different. Recently, the Council of Governments also made funding assistance for other transportation projects in Dallas contingent on the City Council’s agreement on the “one-seat ride” high-speed rail plan.

Good design that encourages economic development will decide whether these undertakings end up being a generational investment or a dizzying waste of money. And for high-speed rail, that means focusing first on Dallas to Houston.
