Road to Hana Adventure Tour

  • Additional Info
  • Bucket List
  • Family Friendly
  • Island Tours

If you visit Maui, you absolutely “must” travel the picturesque Road to Hana, and you should enjoy it in the comfort of a deluxe, air-conditioned, smooth-riding minibus with a professional driver.

We provide the best way to fully experience the incredible 620 curves and beautiful 59 single-lane bridges along the way. The very best stops along the way are included, including a conditions-permitting waterfall swim stop. And the exclusive lunch is the best in Hana. We’ve shared the Road to Hana with tens of thousands of guests over the decades and would love to have you join us.

Leave the rental car behind and relax as you enjoy Maui’s lush countryside while your driver shares Hawaiian culture, sights, and stories. Our eco-tour reduces road congestion, carbon emissions, and lets you soak in the stunning sights.

Tour Highlights:

  • Continental Breakfast,  local style at local favorite Cafe O Lei at the Dunes, with West Maui Mountain views. Enjoy fresh fruit, pastries, coffee, tea, and juice before heading for the “Highway”.
  • Pa’ia Town , laid back “windsurfing capital of the world”, with its boutiques and restaurants is driven through as you travel eastward toward Hana.
  • Kaumahina State Park , engulfed by dense forest is a relaxing stop with awe-inspiring coastline views and refreshing, cool ocean breezes.
  • Upper Waikani Falls,  also known and “Three Bears Falls”, are three parallel waterfalls 70 feet in height and one of the most photogenic sites on the trip.
  • Ke’anae Peninsula  was created by flowing lava and juts into the ocean, where waves crash against jagged volcanic rocks. Taro farmers on the peninsula practice sustainable farming as did the ancient Hawaiians. The old stone church, the village’s only surviving structure after a 1946 tsunami hit.
  • Pua’a Ka’a State Park  is an ideal spot to swim in tranquil waterfall pools, conditions permitting (bring towel and bathing suit). The turquoise water is stunning and equally enjoyed by bathers and spectators. Photo time, again!
  • Wai’anapanapa State Park and Black Sand Beach  is a magnificent sight of a lava tube, sea arches, blowhole, and that wonderful beach. Our guests rank it as one of the finest stops on the tour. Wai’anapanapa means “glistening water” in Hawaii and refers to nearby streams but can also apply to the striking ocean views.
  • Lunch at Hana Farms , a tropical farm, and marketplace located in the rainforest along Hana Highway. Tropical fruits and spices are grown on the farm, and local network of small suppliers growing and harvesting crops contribute to menus and marketplace goods. Choose the “Hana Gold” upgrade of the tour during check-out to include a selection from 3 lunch options in your tour price, or purchase your lunch directly at Hana Farms.
  • Hana Bay be viewed while driving through the Hana Town and some of the best views of the bay area from the road. It’s a favorite beach area for local residents
  • South Wailua Falls  are just past Hana and one of the tallest waterfalls offering convenient access from the roadway. Highly photographed falls and a picture you need in your camera!
  • Kipahulu Valley and ‘Ohe’o Gulch  can be seen will driving across the bridge directly above the head of the Falls of ‘Ohe’o waterfall, as the road heads in a southwesterly direction.
  • Kaupo  is where you’ll notice the distinct change in topography and views while driving around the “backside” from Hana. Volcanic rock and dry grasslands with grazing cows prevail. Kaupo is a sparsely populated sustainable ranching region.
  • Upcountry Maui  in the higher elevations surrounding Haleakala is reached as your remarkable day concludes. Its fertile volcanic soil is conducive to farming, dairy, and even production of local wines and spirits.
  • Bring along a bathing suit and towel if you’d like to swim in a waterfall pool
  • Convenient pickup from most major hotel locations
  • Continental breakfast is included at Cafe O Lei at the Dunes, with West Maui Mountain views
  • Drive through Pa’ia Town, laid back “windsurfing capital of the world”
  • Kaumahina State Park
  • Upper Waianae Falls
  • Kerana Peninsula
  • Pua’a Ka’a State Park: swim in tranquil waterfall pools, conditions permitting
  • Wai’anapanapa State Park, Black Sand Beach, lava tube, sea arches, blowhole

  • cathysW6581VX 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Two Thumbs Up (9740 ft Up!) Sunrise at the top of Haleakala is colder, windier, and possibly wetter than anyone will tell you…it was 6C (42F) before the gale force winds and sprinkling of rain. But if you’re dressed for it (and even if you aren’t) it’s a pretty spectacular sight, well worth the obscenely early morning! Breakfast after was also pretty fantastic; there were three options, but I can vouch for the MacNut Pancakes with sausage and bacon, bottomless coffee and juice…three massive pancakes sprinkled with chopped macadamia nuts…delicious and filling! Our guide, Preston, was very knowledgeable about Haleakala, Hawaiian history, and human nature in general; he has a great sense of humour and was full of interesting tales and tidbits. Predton was able to provide photographic guidance (best places to stand, what not to miss…) based on years of personal experience. Read more Written March 12, 2024

Road to Hana

The road to hana.

Take the historic drive on one of our amazing Road to Hana tours to see some of the most excellent views available on Maui’s beautiful coastline.

car drives along road to hana with lush green hills in back and foreground

The Road to Hana is a scenic highway that twists and bends past cascading waterfalls through lush rainforests , bamboo jungles , and eucalyptus groves down the islands Eastern shore. With so much to see along this 55 mile journey , Polynesian Adventure Activities  has curated the best stops and views to see on our Road to Hana tours.

Known as a “hippie-surfer town” since the 1970s, Paia Town is the “ windsurfing capital of the world ” This laid back town consists of only one main road and is filled with an assortment of charming coffee shops, restaurants and art galleries. Keep an eye out for local resident, Willie Nelson who is often seen here when not on tour.

Waianapanapa State Park and Beach

Waianapanapa in Hawaiian means “glistening water”, and you are sure to see that and so much more on this stop along the Road to Hana. Waianapanapa is a black sand beach filled with lava tubes, sea arches, and stunning panoramic views of the rugged East Maui coastline. The turquoise water stands against the black sand and bright green foliage surrounding the beach making for a truly gorgeous stop on your trip.

Kaumahina State Park

Just past mile marker 12 on the Hana Highway we meet Kaumahina State Park. This large forested rest stop offers scenic views of the northeast Maui coastline and a spectacular view of the Ke’anae Peninsula and village.

Keanae Valley Lookout

Spend time admiring the gorgeous taro fields at the Ke’anae Valley Lookout .This lookout is known for its amazing views of waterfalls, the Wailua Peninsula and even the rim of Haleakala . The coastline here is extremely rocky but the spectacular views make it well worth the stop, on your trek along the Road to Hana.

Pua’a Ka’a State Park

Further down the Hana Highway, we stop at Pua’a Ka’a State Wayside Park . Here, weather permitting visitors will get a chance to swim in a waterfall-fed pool. Keep your eye out for the mongooses that hang out in this park and call it home.

Seeing the Road to Hana is a top experience on Maui and deservedly so. 600+ curves and 46 one-lane bridges take you through the beautiful lush landscape of East Maui. Expect waterfalls, a jagged coastline, and a completely different vibe than on the other parts of the island. It is truly beautiful.

While you can drive the road yourself, the tour is done best with the help of a tour guide. Not only does this help with overcrowding issues on the road , but you’ll also not run the risk of trying to find parking or missing the best stops.

A knowledgeable guide can enhance your experience by providing you with great and entertaining education. So there’s no stress on the driver — you can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the stunning scenery on your road trip. There are a lot of tours to choose from, but we’ve rounded up what we consider to be the best.

Quick links to book the best Road to Hana tours: – Get 10% off with Valley Isle Excursions using code HVG10 and booking here! – Go local with Hana and Beyond on their unique backside tour. – Take a private tour with Awapuhi Adventures – We’d opt for a private halfway to Hana tour with young kids – Go luxury and customizable with Maui Seasons . – Get more in a Road to Hana + Haleakala sunset combo tour with Experience Maui .

The Best Road to Hana Tours

While there are plenty of tours to choose from, we think these provide the best overall tour experience:

best road to hana tours valley isle excursions

Valley Isle Excursions: Best Group Tours

We love Valley Isle Excursions. After living on Maui and seeing plenty of tour groups on the Road to Hana, we wholeheartedly recommend Valley Isle Excursions for a group tour. A group tour isn’t for everyone, but if you don’t mind being in a van with fellow visitors, this is a great tour.

On this small group tour, up to 12 people are in the van but this isn’t an uncomfortable van ride. All seats are 23” captain chairs with USB ports. The chairs are elevated and have 40” windows, which help you get a good view along the way. Meals and reservations to Waianapanapa State Park (home of the famous black sand beach) are included. The tour runs 11-12 hours and they allow travelers of all ages to join.

Receive  10% off your booking  by using promo code  HVG10  at checkout. You  must use our direct booking link  when using the code.

Hana and Beyond Tour stop at Waianapanapa Black Sand Beach

Hana & Beyond: Best Local Tour

While all great Hawaii tour companies are proud to employ local tour guides (it makes such a difference), Hana & Beyond stands out. They are a Native Hawaiian family-owned and operated business with tour guides that are from Hana. So you get a truly local view of the stops along the Hana highway as well as great stories, education, and more.

Hana & Beyond also provides only Road to Hana tours, so they are hyper-focused on creating exceptional experiences for one specific tour.

Their Road to Hana tour is a full-circle tour, so you get to see sights past Hana. The tour runs roughly 10 hours and you’ll be in a van that holds 9-14 guests.

While they do offer private tours , the tours are not customizable. They provide breakfast and lunch as well as snacks and drinks throughout the day.

Awapuhi Adventures: Best Private Full and Halfway to Hana Tour

If you’re not interested in a group tour and you’d rather customize your trip experience, Awapuhi Adventures is a great choice. They specialize in private tours and you can choose your activity level.

They offer a full Road to Hana tour where you can customize your stops, including being dropped off to enjoy the Pipiwai Trail hike. A full day Road to Hana tour is around 12 hours. If that’s too much for your trip, they also offer halfway to Hana tours which won’t take you all the way to Hana, but you’ll get to experience the beauty of the tropical windward side of the island during the 7-8 hour tour.

It’s also a great option if you’re traveling with kids who you don’t think can do an entire Road to Hana day.

Base pricing is for two people in the vehicle and you can add on passengers for an additional fee. If you have little ones, kids 2 and under are free.

Best road to hana tours with haleakala sunset

Experience Maui Tours: Best Combo Tour

If you’re prepared for a long day where you get to see both the Road to Hana and Haleakala, this is the tour for you. Experience Maui offers a private group tour that combines a Road to Hana and Haleakala sunset. The tour follows the full loop past Hana town around Haleakala, so you get to drive on the backside.

Each car can hold up to seven passengers (for larger groups, additional cars can be used) and the stops along the Road to Hana are completely customizable. Meals are included and they usually stop for lunch as well as have a light charcuterie board dinner on Haleakala prior to sunset.

The tour runs from approximately 9 am to 8 or 9 pm.

If you’re a party of 1 heading out on a Road to Hana trip, one of the group tours is going to be the best option for you. Both Valley Isle Excursions and Hana and Beyond offer Road to Hana tours that you can book just for one person. This won’t be a private tour, but you’ll meet some friends on your tour and have a great time. I would much rather do a group tour than drive the road alone!

Best Road to Hana tour for a luxury private experience

If you are looking to ride around in style on a luxury private Road to Hana tour, Maui Seasons is the one to book. For parties up to six people, take their Cadillac SUV on a 10-12 hour tour which can be customized to fit what you want to see. They include breakfast and lunch, pick you up from your hotel/vacation rental, and take care of all of the details. It’s a comfortable way to enjoy this adventure.

They also offer a halfway to Hana tour that is 6-8 hours which will take you as far as the Ke’anae Peninsula, where you can get out and buy some delicious banana bread from Aunty Sandy.

Road to Hana Tour FAQs:

Should i drive the road to hana or take a tour.

The Road to Hana is at the top of most visitors’ bucket lists. And it is truly an incredible experience. You spend the day traversing to East Maui, heading past lush rainforests, and waterfalls, and stopping for views of the dramatic coastline.

While you can drive the Road to Hana yourself, we recommend considering a tour. The tours help you learn and see more on the road, make things like finding parking and visiting legal spots much easier, and help ease congestion on the road. For example, tour operators usually won’t stop at Waikani Falls or Hanawai Falls because safe and legal parking is hard to come by there. Going with a knowledgeable guide helps you stay on public property and visit sites safely.

Visit our full Road to Hana Guide to read more about driving yourself or taking a tour.

What can you expect on a Road to Hana tour?

On a Road to Hana tour, you can expect a long but really enjoyable day. While there are different tours and companies to choose from, they all offer the same key components:

  • Transportation (pickup and drop off at your hotel)
  • A guide (knowledgeable and entertaining, hopefully!)
  • An itinerary of legal stops
  • Water and drinks (usually)

At a bare minimum, a Road to Hana tour should alleviate the headaches of driving, planning your route, and finding parking at different locations. Some tours go above and beyond that with smaller vehicles and group sizes, a fantastic guide (which makes all the difference), and meals, like a picnic or buffet lunch.

What should you bring on a Road to Hana tour?

Your tour guide will give you a list of what to bring with you on the tour, but this list will help you get started:

  • Light jacket
  • Shoes for hiking ( we love Tevas )
  • Bathing suit
  • Water and snacks (your guide will probably provide these but you will want to have your own if you have any dietary restrictions)
  • Change of clothes
  • Cash for food stalls along the way

What to consider before booking a Road to Hana tour?

The biggest factor to consider when choosing a Road to Hana tour is balancing the needs and wants of your group with your budget.

Do you have young children? A group tour probably won’t be as relaxing for you as a private half-day tour. Do you want to be able to choose your stops? A private tour is the way to go. Do you just want to get out on the road with a great guide and have a nice experience? Finding a small group with around 10 people or fewer will probably offer you a good experience at a lower cost.

The Longest Scenic Route In the World

  • Safeway Kahului Store : Free Breakfast & Lunch catered at Safeway Deli.
  • Ulupalakua Ranch and area :  After breakfast, we continue our journey passing the small town of Keokea and beautiful countryside farms and ranches on our way to the Ulupalakua Ranch. Ulupalakua Ranch is one of Maui’s oldest and largest Ranches with beautiful rolling pastures and green forest.
  • Backside of Maui:  Leaving the ranch we enter what locals call (the backside) the most isolated part of the island. Unbelievable picture stops at the Manawainui overlook, Kaupo Ranch, St. Joseph’s Church (built in 1865) pass small towns such as Kanaio, Kahikinui, Kaupo, (including a stop at the Kaupo Store)
  • Kipahulu District :  We now enter the Kipahulu District and the edge of the rainforest. Charles Linberg’s loved the area so much that he requested to be buried here after he died. Palapalahoomau Church is the site if his grave. Another church built in the mid-1800’s.  Stop made upon request.
  • Wailua Waterfalls:  During this part of our adventure, we also start passing fresh tropical fruit stands, the first waterfalls, and more beautiful tropical coastal views. New Wailua is the largest waterfall visible from the highway and is a spectacular site to see. There are also Hawaiian craft/jewelry stands and such for the next several miles. 10 minute stop made up on request.
  • Koki and Homoa Beaches Lunchtime :  The Ulupalakua Ranch Store provides our picnic lunch to be enjoyed at Koki Beach in Hana. Koki and Homoa beaches are 2 the most beautiful beaches in the State of United States – and voted so by Travel Magazine more than once. Breathtaking white sand beach and turquoise colored water and the rainforest all coming together right down to the shoreline – these beaches deserves all the accolades they receive. A special place for us to take pictures from tour bus.
  • Hana/Hana Bay:  Hana is truly the gem of Hawaii. Know where else in the State of Hawaii is the Hawaiian Culture more embraced. The lifestyle is laid back with a profound sense of spirituality all around. We make a brief stop to check out the town and use the restrooms. Then check out Maui’s oldest at the Harbor Hana Bay
  • Wainapanapa State Park & Black Sand Beach:  Wainapanapa is Maui’s famous Black Sand Beach. Cobalt blue Ocean surrounded by black sand and lava rocks makes for a memorable stop. Go for a walk along the edge of the bay, check out the blue water or just sit under a nice shade tree, great place to spend a few minutes relaxing at one of the islands most beautiful places.  45 minutes to 60 minute stop.  Enough time for everyone go for a dip.
  • The Caves at Wainapanapa State Park:   At the Wainapanapa State park are the historical volcanic caves which you could explore. And if you are lucky you could witness the legend of the caves come alive.  Certain time of the year red shrimps appears, turning the water red. Let our tour guides tell you the legend of Princess Popoalaea.  Don’t forget this stop is park of the Waianapanapa State Park. Up to 60 minute stop or longer.
  • Hana Farms:  After a quick stop for coffee we start to visit the waterfalls; Hanawai, Pua’a Ka’a, Waikani Falls are all visible from the highway and make great picture stops. Pua’a Ka’a state park provides two safe and easy to access waterfalls and freshwater pools. Great place to take a swim.
  • Wailua and Keanae:  Two small Hawaiian villages doing their best to live like the Hawaiians of old. Hunting pigs and growing Taro, Bread Fruit, and Bananas are all big parts of everyday life in this small community. It’s also the site of the Famous Half Way to Hana Snack stand; shave ice, fresh coconut, cold drinks and of course the Original Fresh Baked Banana Bread. The Keanae overlook and peninsula offer views of one of the largest taro farms in Hawaii.
  • Waikamoi Stream and the Hamakua Ditch:  The ditch is a man-made aqueduct created in the late 1800’s to move water into the central valley to be used to irrigate the Sugarcane and Pineapple fields. The flume system is used today and pumps in over 60 million gallons of water into the upcountry and central valley areas of the island. One of Maui’s 2 main water sources.
  • Rainforest:  The largest area of rainforest in the state of Hawaii is along the Hana Hwy. Nahiku, helo, Wailua, are small villages nestled in the rainforest.
  • Hookipa Beach :  Moving past Haiku the last scenery of the day will be at Hookipa Beach. Considered the windsurf capital of the world enjoy watching windsurfers, kiteboarders and surfer challenge the oceans waves and shoreline winds while passing by on our tour bus. What makes this such a unique Hana experience is the peacefulness of this adventure. We arrive at the popular attractions of the tour either before or after the Thousands of people that do the tour every day do.
  • Pai’a Town used to be a “ghost town,” but people started to find Pai’a to be one of the historical sites in Maui.  Visitor’s to Maui comes here for a drink, best food and to experience Hawaiian style.
