Self-drive: Teide tour from Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Teide volcano

Winter in Tenerife, but the temperatures rise to a comfortable 21ºC. I am close to Teide volcano, the third highest volcanic structure in the world. I only had one day of free time to spend on the island of Tenerife and upon asking some friends for suggestions they all told me the same thing: ‘Visit Mount Teide National Park, that’s a must.’

So, without further ado I am going to show you why you must visit Teide National Park too.

Teide tour from Santa Cruz

I started in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and ended up at the Tenerife South Airport by the end of the day. What actually is the best route coming from the north and where to stop for viewpoints? Well, let me show you.

When you start early morning in Santa Cruz, first make a short drive to the town of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. It’s considered to be the most beautiful town in Tenerife. Park you car and enjoy a short walk and a good coffee. The historic city center is beautiful with lots of (coffee) bars and restaurants. The town is actually a UNESCO World Heritage site.

La Laguna Tenerife

Leaving La Laguna, I follow the signs indicating road TF-24 towards Teide. It’s an easy route, you can’t miss it. The first part takes me through forest area. Hairpin bends bring me higher and higher. After a while the first of many viewpoints (mirador) appear. When I get out of my rental car, I feel the strong sunlight. On this altitude and with clear skies I wish I brought my sunscreen -.

Teide National Park roads

Mirador de Chipeque

After 30 minutes a road sign suggests to turn off the main road. It announces two viewpoints: Mirador de Chimaque and Mirador de Chipeque. Go for it. It’s only a couple of minutes-drive towards the best one: Chipeque. Teide itself is still 30 kilometers away, but this view already was beautiful. My very first view of this majestic volcano, wow.

Teide volcano

Pick as many viewpoints as you can but don’t miss out on La Tarta. The sharp curve in the road marks the famous multicolored layers of lava. They date of different eras and resemble a slice of cake (so they say -). The closer you get to Teide, the rougher and more volcanic the landscape becomes. The rougher, the better, right? I am amazed by the diversity of landscapes. I did not count, but probably I have gotten out of the car at least 30 times.

La Tarta Teide

At some point you pass Mount Teide. There is the option to go up with a cable car. Some say you should buy tickets online ahead of your visit as it can become very crowded. Did I go up? No. Honestly speaking I lacked the time because I needed to catch a plane -. On the other hand, I also read that the views from afar are just as impressive. Have you been up the volcano?

Garcia Rocks

Don’t end the trip at Mount Teide to turn around and drive back. Continue (at least for a bit) to enjoy the famous Roques de Garcia (Garcia Rocks), a spectacular rock formation. Just around the corner of Garcia, Mirador Boca Tauce offers again a wonderful view of Teide with the Garcia Rocks in front of it.

Teide with Garcia rocks

How long did the tour from Santa Cruz actually take? From Garcia Rocks I continue my tour driving further south towards Tenerife South Airport. It’s quite a steep descent but I enjoy guiding my car through all kinds of curves and bends. Everywhere there are cacti along the road, in all shapes and sizes. I left La Laguna around 12.30h and arrived at the airport at 17.00h. Count in many stops and a quick lunch.

Should I book a tour or go for a self-drive? Take a rental car, if you can. I definitely didn’t want to be inside one of those big tour busses. On a road trip like this, the traveler decides when to stop and for how long. And you should aim for the same; you will have so much more fun.

Teide tour south

I am sure Tenerife has a lot more to explore next to this Teide tour from Santa Cruz. For sure I need to go back someday. Have you been Tenerife? What place would you recommend? Leave them in the comments below, thanks!

Never seen the Spanish countryside. So much different than what I expected from what I’ve seen of the cities.

These islands are amazing. It’s a couple of hours flight from Spain, but perfect setting for a road trip. Add your Spanish architecture and food culture and you can imagine the great time you will have. Thanks Brian!

But, instead of being overwhelmed by the bustling south of the island, you ’ ve seen that Puerto de la Cruz is the perfect destination for a relaxing rest .

Amid so much sun, beach, swimming pools and good weather, it seems that one of Tenerife’s main attractions often gets overlooked. And, did you know that the highest volcano in Europe is just moments away from Puerto de la Cruz?

Yes, that’s right, Mount Teide is just a short drive away. And yes, it is a volcano, and it’s also the highest point in Europe.

While you’re staying in the north of Tenerife, why not enjoy one of our stress-free Mount Teide excursions from Puerto de la Cruz and other northern locations?

Read on—we’re going to tell you all about five Teide tours from Puerto de la Cruz so you can visit one of the most famous volcanoes in the world during your stay in the Canary Islands.

This is one of our star Teide tours from Tenerife North, with pick-ups in Puerto de la Cruz, as well as in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Cristóbal de La Laguna.

Excursion with Cable Car to Teide Peak

The only tour that takes you to the highest part of the volcano and spares you the tiresome process of requesting a permit to get up Mount Teide peak months in advance and having to make sure its timing matches the timing of the cable car tickets you buy.

To quickly summarise: to ascend to the summit, at an altitude of 3,718 m, you need a permit issued by the National Parks Booking Office .

Only a few permits are issued and there is usually a months-long waiting list . As a company that works with official National Park guides, we have access to some of these permits and you can use them to ascend Mount Teide.

Excursions from Santa Cruz can also depart from other points in northern Tenerife. Here are some of the features of the tour:

  • We book the permit for you: otherwise you need to plan your visit months in advance because the permit is essential for ascending to the summit .
  • You won’t have to do the juggling act of requesting the permit yourself and then matching its timing to the timing of your cable car tickets (included in the tour price).
  • A guide will accompany you and give you detailed explanations about Mount Teide.
  • We collect and return you in comfortable transport for small groups to and from your hotel or nearby point in the north of Tenerife.

It’s almost better if you see for yourself:

Teide Tour excursion with Teide Cable Car

Once you have reached an altitude of 3,555 metres, you can follow one of the free-access paths, which can be used without having to obtain a permit. These lead to the Pico Viejo and La Fortaleza viewpoints.

Both trails run along the marks and scars left by Mount Teide and other old volcanoes in the Teide National Park and end at a viewpoint from where you can gaze out at the beauty of the Canary Islands archipelago.

What is more, you can follow your chosen path while listening to the digital audio guide to the trails which is included free in the tour (available in Spanish, English, German, French, Italian, Polish, Dutch and Russian, and for Android and Apple devices). You can get an idea of how it works in this video ↓.

And if you’d like to see what this Teide tour from Puerto de la Cruz is like, here’s a taster:

Three Teide tours from Puerto de la Cruz to enjoy the volcano by night

The best thing to do when night falls in Tenerife is to look upwards and gaze at the firmament. Admire clear, star-filled skies that impress you with a sensation of an incredible vastness.

Mount Teide Night Tour to stargaze

This night-time Teide tour, with departures from Puerto de la Cruz, is the most basic option. It is perfect for visiting the National Park in the evening, enjoying watching the sunset from a viewing point, and then stargazing with long-range telescopes and Starlight guides.

Night Tour to Mount Teide

We will collect you from your hotel (or a point nearby) in Puerto de la Cruz, and after a tour of a good part of the National Park in a comfortable bus on a geological journey going back 180,000 years in time, you will arrive at an impressive viewpoint from which you can enjoy a spectacular, unforgettable sunset.

In the dying light, the volcanic landscape takes on colours and hues of the utmost beauty.

Then we will continue the tour until we arrive at the cable car base station, where we will observe the stars through long-range telescopes and with the help of Starlight guides, so that no secret of the Universe will be left undiscovered.

This is what is included in this night-time Teide tour:

  • Pick-ups in Puerto de la Cruz, with return transport to Mount Teide
  • A stop at an impressive viewing point in the National Park to enjoy the sunset
  • Stargazing with Starlight guides and long-range telescopes

This is a 2-in-1 night tour to Mount Teide. Excursions from Puerto de la Cruz collect you and your fellow astronomy lovers in the afternoon and take you to visit the Teide Observatory.

Astronomic Tour to Mount Teide

During the visit we’ll give you detailed information about the Canary Islands’ skies, the telescopes and the projects that are being run at the institution. And if that weren’t enough, you’ll also take part in a fascinating astrophysics workshop.

After the visit we’ll head outdoors to watch the spectacular sunset before getting to the cable car base station. Then we’ll get out the long-range telescopes and join the Starlight guides to observe one of the most sensational starry skies in the world. Did you know that from here you can see 83 of the 88 known constellations?

You’ll learn about mythology, history and much more.

Here’s a taster of this Teide tour from Puerto de la Cruz for astronomy enthusiasts:

Here is a brief outline of what is included in this fascinating night excursion:

Sunset & Stars on Teide excursion

Can you imagine ascending Mount Teide by cable car outside of its normal opening times? You’ll visit the volcano at dusk, just as the sun goes down, with fewer visitors and the opportunity to enjoy the spectacle of Teide’s shadow and a unique sunset at an altitude of 3,555 m with views of four islands from the stunning Pico Viejo viewpoint and the chance to see what might just be the best sunset of your life.

But the sunset isn’t the end of the tour: quite the opposite!

And when it’s over... Back to the hotel? Nope, not yet!

Next, you’ll observe the stars through long-range telescopes. Just like on the astronomic tour, Starlight guides will tell you everything about the firmament and you’re sure to be amazed.

  • Dreamer17181625160 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Don't book early trips We booked ourself onto the 9.10 cable car, the second ascent of the day, the week before we arrived in Tenerife. Having visited the year before and been disappointed that despite the, seemingly perfect, weather at the base the cable car wasn't running due to winds, this year we checked the website the night before and before we left. Both indicated the cable car was open and the weather fine. We left the hotel at 7.30 in order to be sure we arrived at the station the required 20 minutes before departure and we duly arrived at 8.40. However, when we tried to check in we were told that the cable car would not be running at all today due to the weather and that we had been emailed at 8am to advise us. Sure enough we had, but we were well on our way already having checked before departure. In fact anyone staying in a tourist area and planning to arrive 20 minutes before one of the early departures will already have left - hence the title of this review. I am somewhat suspicious that the reason for the cancellation was staff shortages, rather than the weather, which seemed perfect. However my main complaint is that if at 8am they can confidently forecast that the weather will remain unsuitable until closure at 5pm, presumably they could also forecast that it was going to be unsuitable at 9am 9 hours beforehand and therefore send out cancellations much earlier. As we drove the 30km back to the main road we passed dozens of cars, presumably all heading to the cable car too. Surely an automatic sign showing whether the cable car is operating at the last major turn would at least give people the opportunity to stop and check for other information and avoid a 60km round trip? • Adventurer660847 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Disgusted at the price and how many people they cram into the cable cars at a time. Nice views when you get up the top - though it doesnt go right to the top but 40 euros each to be crammed in a cable car like sardines feeling very unsafe due to the weight was awful. They must be making millions per year as this is running all day long at cost of 40 Euros per person with about 50 people crammed into one cable car. This goes up and down at least 22 times per day at a cost of 40 euro per person without audio guide, that costs extra! Premium tickets whatever they are cost 74 euros per person! Just worked out they are making over 40000 per day minimum - times that by 365 days a year and that is millions they are making per year, disgusting especially since they are cramming people in like sardines on each trip. Utter rip off! Read more Written 13 February 2024
  • NorwichHarley 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Public bus can be a problem First the public bus 342 from Los Cristianos to Mount Teide. There is only 1 per day there and 1 back. If the bus is full it does not stop to pick up, this happened to us although we were first in the queue. We spoke to 4 others in the queue and all 6 of us went to the taxi office where the buses go from and found out it was 70 Euros regardless of number of passengers. 12 Euros each is only slightly more than the bus. If possible get a small group and go by taxi removes the risk. On the way back down some people were left at the last stop, no idea how they got back. The bus starts at El Duque, picks up at Costa Adeje and finally at Los Cristianos, if it has seats available. It also stops other times along the route. On Teide it stops at a parador, then cable car and finally El Portillo. The cable car MUST be booked in advanced online only. You can also prebook walk to actual summit which takes some stamina. Get in line 20 minutes before the 10 minute journey and be guided into the enclosed cable car. The journey is quick and smooth and the views great from the top if the weather is good. There are 2 trails around the summit, walking boots recommended, take around 15 minutes each. Back at base there is a pleasant cafe and shop. The Teide legend is very small but interesting, comes as part of your ticket price and you see it after descent. From the base you can take a bus (QR code at bus stop gives you times) to the Parador and El Portillo. We went to El Portillo to ensure we were on the 342 bus back to Los Cristianos. Their is a small cafe at El Portillo. You can also walk free trails from the Parador or the cable car and catch the bus around the area. A good map is available from the park. First the price is ridiculously high plus you can’t buy tickets at the venue you have to buy online and the app simply does not work anyway. Can’t be bothered, not worth the hassle. • samsamspence 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Average Expensive for what it is. It’s the only way up the volcano apart from a super big walk. Queues are long to get up and down. Still need to book an extra bit 3months in advance to get to the very top. Read more Written 3 January 2024
  • 75LLO 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing views, totally worth it Expensive experience, but worth the effort and the money, to be able to see the natural park from a vantage point and be close to the crater of Mt Teide. Parking can be a problem - allow yourself plenty of time (not just the 20 minutes stipulated). Cabins are a bit crowded for my taste (up to 45 people). Do not use if you're claustrophobic or have a heart problem. Important: Take a jacket or a jumper: the temperature is 10 degrees cooler at the top (it was 5 C on the day we went, when in the town it was 27). You can only stay at the top for an hour, due to air conditions (low oxygen). Read more Written 20 November 2023

  • Sarahlovescats 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Uneventful and disappointing Myself and my husband have been up Teide a number of times and it’s breathtaking. This time we were with my sister and brother in law and wanted to show how spectacular it is. Since our last visit it’s all changed in that you can’t buy a ticket on arrival. You need to buy on line. Website doesn’t make this clear. We arrived at 11.30 ish and no on line tickets were available to go up and down by the cable car for the rest of that day. What a wasted visit. Website needs to be more clear about this. On our previous visits we’ve just turned up and bought tickets for the next available cable car. Read more Written 16 November 2023

  • Barretina 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Drove all the way there for nothing!! The poorly designed website doesn’t make it clear AT ALL that you can only buy tickets online. So we arrived there (like many more visitors!) only to discover that we couldn’t buy a ticket to go on the cable car to travel to the summit. The staff were pretty smug about it too, quite annoying really. Read more Written 4 November 2023

But paying 40€ to go up and see the top with not as nice views is useless unless you’re climbing to top of crater. If you have seen the Grand Canyon or canyons in Israel, you will not be impressed. Also thought we’d be over clouds which we weren’t.Drive there but don’t go up. Read more Written 13 August 2023

Enjoy this 2-in-1 Astronomic Tour of Teide for astronomy lovers in Tenerife

The Astronomic Tour of Teide is our 2-in-1 Teide astronomical tour, which combines a Teide Observatory visit with a stargazing experience . Transport is also offered for the Teide Astronomical Tour from various points on the island of Tenerife.

During this activity, which lasts 8 hours, our Starlight guide accompanies you at all times, so that you can enjoy Mt Teide by night . But you’ll also be accompanied by nocturnal creatures. As the sun goes down, a change comes over the National Park. Creatures that are active during the daytime hide away, and the nocturnal creatures emerge from their lairs.

Many invertebrates start scampering among the plants, and the harmless bats abandon the volcanic tunnels, cracks and caves where they spend the hours of daylight asleep, to make themselves lords and masters of the scrubland as they hunt for moths. The National Park is home to five of the seven species of bat that inhabit the Canary archipelago. Especially noteworthy are the Canary long-eared bat and the free-tailed bat (Tadarida teniotis), the largest bat to be found on these islands.

Your Astronomic Tour of Teide includes a visit of the Teide Observatory—in the afternoon and with a guide—and once it's night time, a stargazing experience using long-range telescopes at 2,356 m at the Teide Cable Car base station, under the clear and pure sky of the Teide National Park, the most visited national park in Europe.

It also includes a stop for a meal. You choose whether you prefer to bring your own food or buy our optional picnic along with your ‘Astronomic Tour including a visit of Teide Observatory’.

An afternoon Teide Observatory tour

Tenerife is so much more than just sun and beaches. The island is also famous for science, its volcanoes and the stars over Mt Teide.

The Canary Islands are one of the three best spots on Earth to observe the sky. The other two spots, just for curiosity’s sake, are Chile and Hawaii. This is why we are fortunate to have  the   most important solar observatory here in Tenerife.

Did you know that the Teide Observatory began to operate in 1964 and focuses on solar observations and robotic astronomy? Moreover, it is home to a wide range of solar and nocturnal telescopes, owned by different European countries.

Thanks to the guides on your Astronomic Tour of Teide, you can feel like a scientist for a day as during the afternoon Tenerife Observatory visit:

  • - You’re introduced to the importance of the sky in the Canary Islands , the Teide Observatory telescopes and the different projects of the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics, also known as IAC .
  • You participate in the most interesting astrophysics workshop, held in the Teide Observatory visitors centre, shared with you by our Starlight guides, where we explain what astrophysics is and how the astrophysicists in this centre conduct their research.
  • You enjoy the sun like never before whilst observing sunspots and solar flares through two solar telescopes that we make available to you.
  • You visit the inside of a nocturnal telescope and don’t leave until you know how it functions and learn about its exciting history.

An Astronomic Tour of Teide you will remember for the rest of your life

After the Tenerife Observatory tour, what’s better than to enjoy the colours of the National Park when it’s getting dark, before beginning the astronomical observation, included in your stargazing night on Mount Teide.

It doesn’t matter if you have already been to Teide during the day because the moment the National Park is bathed in the lovely colours of the twilight, you will feel as though you have never been in this beautiful location.

Before you arrive at the Teide Observatory, you will have toured a good part of the National Park. During your tour, you will see inside the caldera of Las Cañadas , a massive volcanic formation whose origins date back 180,000 years—to when the volcano that then stood at the highest point on Tenerife collapsed and its northern slope fell away. A good proportion of the millions of tons of rock that made up the volcano slid away downwards, into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. What remained standing of the volcanic edifice is the cirque of Las Cañadas, an oval, natural amphitheatre, which forms a wall stretching from east to west in the south of the Park.

Volcanic activity soon resumed in the great tunnel that the slippage left in its wake, and successive eruptions filled Las Cañadas with lava flows. Evidence of this activity can be seen in the occasional (now dormant) volcanic cones scattered around. One of the volcanoes that emerged following the collapse was Mount Teide, which rises up in the centre of the caldera, reaching a height of 3,718 m. To date, the last eruption to have occurred in this spectacular volcanic landscape took place in 1798 at the base of Pico Viejo.

A stargazing experience on Mount Teide to unravel the mysteries of the starry sky

It is often said that Tenerife is a fortunate island for its climate. But it is fortunate for more reasons than this.

For example: from Mount Teide, it is possible to observe 83 of the 88 officially recognised constellations. You may ask, how is it possible to see so many constellations from Mount Teide? Because  there is nothing like the peaks of this friendly island to observe the stars in Tenerife .

It is also because the Teide is the best place in Tenerife to conduct an astronomical observation, away from the light pollution produced by the urban areas of the island.

With the Astronomic Tour of Teide guides, you discover the secrets of the heavens from Teide National Park. You learn how to orient yourself using celestial objects and enjoy discerning the elements of Greek mythology, which are hidden behind the constellations, and the relationship between them.

Get closer to the stars with the professional telescopes on your Teide Astronomical Tour

The astronomical observation included in the Astronomic Tour of Teide is held in the car park next to the Teide Cable Car base station.

You discover planets, galaxies and clusters like you never would have imagined, thanks to our professional, last generation long range telescopes, which you have at your disposal to go through the most interesting celestial objects of every night, visible from Mount Teide.

In addition, during your Astronomic Tour of Teide the guides will provide you with interesting information about the objects you observe through the telescope.

Our professional astronomic instrumentation, together with the transparency and quality of the skies over the peaks of Tenerife, will without a doubt contribute to a unique experience which you will live during this astronomical tourism activity in Tenerife.

Full moon astronomical observation

You will already know that the moon passes through different phases during its 29-day cycle, that is to say, lunation.

Therefore, at least once a month, the potent glow of our planet’s satellite will dim the faint light of the distant celestial bodies.

If you book our Astronomic Tour of Teide and enjoy it on the night of the full moon, you will take advantage of its radiant appearance and be delighted with its splendour: craters, mountain ranges and other lunar wonders.

To get you started: Did you know that you can find the Montes Teneriffe, Mons Pico and the crater Piazzi Smyth on the moon?

If what we have just mentioned has surprised you and we have left you curious as to why they have these names, write this question down so that you can ask our guides on the night of your Astronomic Tour with a Teide Observatory visit.

RECOMMENDATIONS AND WARNINGS FOR VISITORS

We appreciate your interest in visiting the   Teide Observatory (OT)   and we hope that you enjoy your visit.

The Teide Observatory is not responsible for the difficulties or discomfort caused by not following these recommendations.

The arranged visits will only be carried out when the weather and the operating status of the telescopes permit. Due to adverse weather conditions, especially during winter, which may affect the safety of the roads leading to the Tenerife Observatory (snow, ice, falling rocks) visits may be unexpectedly cancelled.

Before visiting us

Health and altitude

The Teide Observatory (TO) is located at an altitude of approximately 2,400 meters above sea level, an altitude at which oxygen diminishes. Groups will move about within the TO on gravel paths. For this reason, the visit is not recommended for people with general health problems (anaemia, breathing or heart problems, etc.). If you are not sure if you should visit, consult your doctor first.

The TO is not responsible for any health problems that can be caused by the altitude or by not following these recommendations and warnings.

The TO does not have medical assistance within its facilities.

Bear in mind that the closest hospital is approximately one and a half hours away by car.

Recommended equipment

  • Protect yourself from the sun. It’s recommended that you use hats, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Due to the low levels of humidity that are common in the TO, come prepared with sufficient liquid (water or juices) to prevent dehydration.
  • Bring comfortable clothes and adequate footwear (avoid sandals).
  • Bring some warm clothes in case the weather changes abruptly and to enter the interior of the telescopes.

During the visit

What should I do when I arrive?

When you arrive at the TO, centre personnel will be waiting for you at the access gate to let you know what to do with the car or bus. Please always follow the instructions you receive.

Remember that there is no need to ring the bell, and please do not block the entrance. You may park in the designated parking spaces while you wait.

Please do not forget to bring identification (ID card or passport) and a copy of your reservation to confirm access. If you are unable to produce identification and/or the booking confirmation, the TO/IAC does not guarantee your visit.

Warnings during the visit

For security reasons, proper operation and care of the environment, the TO asks you to closely follow the following rules during your visit:

  • Due to time limits and visit schedule constraints, the time to use the toilet is before the visit starts. Please leave the toilet as clean as you found it!
  • Please be respectful of the surroundings as the TO is located in a National Park. It is prohibited to:

Great trip, highlight of our stay.

Lucas was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable and informative and a nice guy. The tour was well balanced with plenty of technical information and access to telescopes. Would definitely recommend this tour

See previous comments.

The tour was excellent! The guide (Adrien is his name I think) was absolutely amazing, contagiously enthusiastic, and adapted to levels of questions ranging from amateur to PhD level with ease. The only downside was a bad estimation of time of return (it was supposed to be 22:30, was instead 23h), which for us might have been an issue since we almost didn't catch the last intercity bus.

Amazing a definite must do!

Lukas did a great job leading the tour in English.

This is a wonderful experience and would highly recommend anyone visiting *** to go on this tour. *** our guide was excellent and is very knowledgeable and very enthusiastic on the subject. Top tour and worth every Euro

Amazing tour. Our guide was incredible, he had so much information, answered loads of questions, and gave really good explanations. Funny guy too :) I would absolutely recommend this tour.

I took part in an astronomic tour around Teide Observatory and it was amazing. Our guide *** was excellent and gave us so much interesting scientific and non-scientific information. Thanks to this the tour absolutely exceeded my expectations. The only downside of the tour was the pick up that did not go quite smooth for me and two other guests, as the roads were blocked due to the carnival in Puerto de la Cruz - I believe that the pick up point could have been reviewed and altered in advance, as the carnival schedule must have been known upfront. Nevertheless, ***o was very helpful in finding ways how to get us onboard, so that we could still participate in the tour.

Visiting the observatory was great. I would like a bit more technical information about how the telescopes work and what research is done there. The stargazing part was great.

The tour was amazing! Adrian and Macarena had an enormous astronomic knowledge, which they shared with a lot of passion. I would recommend the tour to anyone. It was a great pleasure to participate in this trip!

The tour was phenomenal. Our guide Orisbel was very charismatic and knowledgable. I would gladly participate in other similar tours, when I am in Teneriffe again. A warm recommendation for the tour. One particular point blew off our steam, and that is the transport to the observatory. The driver was just so unnecessarily speeding through the curves and abruptly braking at odd points, that even if we never had issues with locomotive sickness, we were on the verge of vomiting afterwards. This point does not drastically diminish our experience with the tour, but is definitely one to be worked upon.

It was great. The leader was super.

Product as described in description

The guide around the observatory sight was informative and the sunset over El Teide was spectacular. The later star gazing was also very good. Its a very long excursion, over 8 hrs from a 3pm pick up in Santa Cruz & return so have a good lunch first. A seasonal map of the significant objects in the night sky would make a useful addition/souvenir.

Excellent trip , take note of the warm clothing, it is very cold , also the bus could have been warmer

A well run outing with a good programme, though better in principle than in practice. The outdoor sun-directed telescopes we looked through showed nothing of interest because of the current solar minimum, we only got to see one (small) astronomical telescope close up, the lecture on light and the mini-planetarium talk were basic, and there was not a lot to see after dark owing to cloud. Nevertheless, it was worth going for a rare close-up view of a mountaintop observatory, the informed enthusiasm of the guide, and memorable sunset views from near the top of the island.

Already did

very good, the website details could be a bit clearer on what to expect. the guides were very good indeed. My son does astrophotography so has more than a working knowledge of the subject and it was described very well and accessible to all. the kit used was excellent quality. (celestron 11 inch SCT) but obviously all targets visual.

All in all, it was a fun experience for our family of five -- especially the stargazing. We had a couple family members who weren't as excited about the technical/scientific side of the observatory information, but they enjoyed seeing how much the others in our family loved it! We did hope to see the sunset, since that was a big part of our Haleakala experience on a previous trip, so it was disappointing to be only able to catch a small glimpse. Maybe Volcano Teide can create a grid on its website that shows all of the trips it offers, and the various differences, for example: 1) if viewing sunset was possible, 2) if cable car ride to top of Teide was included (we could not tell, and a couple family members were disappointed to miss it), 3) if regional information would be provided on the long drive to the observatory (our guide never said anything during that hour after our pick up -- he was totally quiet until we got close to the site, making the ride on a packed bus especially boring even though we were passing through what seemed to be an interesting area we knew nothing about), 4) percentage of time spent indoors and outdoors (the indoor observatory segment was great, and the cable car base building was a terrific place for a meal -- we had assumed all time would be spent outside, so these were positive surprises), and 5) amount of time spent on star gazing (it was the right amount of time -- some of us were dreading a much longer period outdoors). It's also helpful for others to know that if you're traveling from the south where the weather is warm during the day, Volcano Teide was okay with boarding the bus in shorts, for example, as long as they could verify pants were brought along to change into upon arrival. Walking for 10 minutes to the bus stop and riding the vehicle in polar fleece pants in 23-degree Celsius weather was not something anyone would want to do!

I was very much looking forward to the astronomical tour, after spending one evening doing stargazing with my family in a previous visit to Tenerife. However, it was a huge disappointment, in particularly considering the amount of money spent (three adults and one child) and the quality of the experience received. To start off, pick up location could have been more explicit, which was addressed promptly by emailing the tour organiser. We, alongside another 15 tourists, were taken to the observatory - was a smooth journey, no issue at all. The guide subsequently presented us a scientific telescope, of which the duration was no more than ten mins - and that was it.... There was no hands on experience, no understanding of the technical details until we were taken to two amateur telescopes that are located in the public path, and were advised to the sun's corona. Unsurprisingly, all we could see was an orange sphere in the eyepiece, nothing more. We were then taken to another studio to watch a video, which last probably 15 mins, and waited in the open area for nearly an hour, doing nothing, because the guide needed to wait another group to watch the video etc. The temperature there, at December, was nearly 0 degree celsius. It makes no sense to keep the visitors out there and do nothing! After the long wait, we finally started the 'highlight' of the tour - we were taken back to the Teide, and watched four items, moon, Jupiter, Saturn, and the Orion belt, using again four telescopes (not the scientific telescopes I was hoping). The last activity of the tour, at nearly zero degree celsius, was star gazing. The tour guide was passionate and knowledgeable. However, it was absolutely too cold to actually participate. In conclusion, please consider using your own transportation and go up the Teide rather than taking the tour.

A very interesting and engaging tour. Quite long: 8+ hours includind driving, but you see a lot of interesting things along the way - beautiful nature, observatory, devices, video presentation, observation through solar and night telescopes, and get acquainted with constellations. Just bear in mind, that in winter there could be very cold - There were -5C on the mountain there in December, while at the seashore of Tenerife there were +20C. So get really worm clothes if you don't want to freeze.

The tour was very well organised, the bus was on time at the pick up point and they dropped us back at the scheduled time. Our guide (from the south) was very knowledgeable and able to explain everything in English and Spanish. We would like to give him a special thank you as he made the tour very enjoyable and interesting showing his love for science and astronomy. Also the guide from the north who did the stargazing experience in Spanish was very passionate and knowledgeable. The experience was worth the price and we can definitely recommend it.

Booking the trip was very easy

Great and informative tour.

Very informative and enjoyable with thoroughly knowledgeable guide and good equipment to see the sun and stars/planets with

A fantastic experience in spectacular surroundings with engaging and knowledgeable guides. Highly recommended to anyone who has even a passing interest in astronomy and the night sky.

If you're into astronomy, this is the excursion for you. Friendly, knowledgeable guides who bring the whole experience to life. Great opportunity to discover the night sky in perfect conditions, however, make sure you take suitable warm clothing, it was, as the night wore on, extremely cold.

Visit to Observatory + Stargazing. Amazing tour well worth it. Professional staff, well organized, totally unique experience to have this inside information about how the Teide Observatory works and to get the view from the top of the mountain. Stargazing well organized, with 5 telescopes aimed at different objects in the sky, totally fantastic and very knowledgeable expert explanation.

Interesting experience, but stargazing was too short (only 5 or 6 object seen via telescope).

A unique adventure! The excursion is well thought out and very well conducted. Beautiful views and a huge amount of knowledge.

Very interesting and memorable trip, great guides. Wrap up warmly.

Too long and not really interesting

We have been much looking forward to our experience, but our guide was unfortunately completely unprofessional. The transfer was fine and the observatory area was fascinating, but we were hugely disappointed that the observation via the long range telescope was only 20 minutes for the English speaking group and then we spent over 1 hour looking at the sky with our eyes. The parallel Spanish group could enjoyed the telescope for an hour. 20 minutes is really not much especially as we booked an 8h tour. The guide was not using a filter for the bright moon, so it was an unenjoyable experience. What was worst however is that our guide was not properly using the green laser. He crossed the people all the time, even the head area. When we advised that he should be more careful, he just laughed and stated that the laser is not dangerous. This is completely unprofessional. We were extremely disappointed.

My son likes this experience

Wonderful tour with an incredible setting. Was really impressed with the depth of science and astronomy presented during this activity. The stargazing element was superb, and to finish it off the explanation around constellation map and navigating by stars was awesome.

1. Not clear what workshop is about 2. Not a kids friendly activity: explanations are terrible and in poor English 3. It was too long and too cold for kids. “Take warm cloth and avoid sandals” was mentioned but it’s not enough to communicate that the kids will have to stay outside for several hours and essentially need to wear winter clothes or refuse from visiting. 4. We had to stay in the bus during the 2nd part of the trip (stargazing) to keep them warm, so we missed the activity. Our kids wore 5 layers of clothes but it wasn’t enough We are very much disappointed and think it was a waste of our time and money. 5. Even for a pick up location: we only received one option and we came there only to find out on our way back that there where other stops we could use (and they were closer to our hotel)

Very qualified staff/guides. They are interested in sharing their knowledge in attracting-scientific manner.

All aspects of the tour were great! Loved it!

A brilliant trip and really well organised and run. Good communication throughout via text & email and pick up on time too. Our guide was excellent and gave us lots of information on the island, climate and other topics in addition to having a real depth of knowledge on the observatory and telescopes. Very well set up so everyone could get a chance to see the sun using the small telescopes & the auditorium presentation and explanations were excellent. The picnic was worth having as it is a long drive to get to Teide and then do the observatory tour. The vegetarian option was great. Unfortunately we were unable to use the telescopes for stargazing as the wind was too strong but this was handled very professionally.

Great ! Absolutely perfect!

Friendly and informative, great views.

Fantastic tour. Max was an incredible guide and very knowledgeable

Excellent trip didn’t get back to the hotel until 1am but worth it.

v interesting , high quality talks

This is an amazing tour. The guide Max was very knowledgeable and approachable. Looking inside an observatory was fascinating. Seeing how fast the sun sets was also exciting. The stargazing was where I learned some amazing facts. Just one thing - Wrap up because it gets very cold. Overall A very enjoyable and worthwhile experience..
