How to Tell What Version of Safari Is on My iPhone

Apple Holds Product Launch Event At New Campus In Cupertino

The Safari app is part of iOS, so Apple keeps this mobile browser up to date with your phone's operating system. For the past several iOS releases, the Safari version number has been consistent with the iOS version number: If your iPhone runs iOS 12, you have Safari 12 installed. Look at your iPhone's settings for a general idea of which Safari version you have. If you want more detailed information about your version number and features, use an online tool to detect your browser's version number.

About Safari Versions and Updates

Apple usually references Safari versions in general with a whole number, such as Safari 11 or Safari 12. However, as with the macOS version of Safari, the full version number of mobile Safari can contain periods and sets of numbers that semantically identify minor changes and bug fixes. For example, your computer's version might say Safari 12.01, while your phone might run Safari 12.0.

Video of the Day

Because the mobile Safari app is native to iOS, whenever you update iOS, the browser is updated. Often, these updates offer security fixes to keep you safe while browsing, but they can also add new functionality. For example, Safari 12 added features that include an augmented reality model viewer and strong password generator for your iPhone.

Check Safari Version on iPhone

You can check your phone's version of iOS to get a general idea of which version of Safari it runs, although this won't tell you the extended version number of Safari you have. Open your iPhone's Settings app, tap "General" and then "About." The phone's iOS version is listed beside "Version" Pay attention specifically to the number before the decimal point. For example, if your phone runs iOS 12.1, then you have Safari 12. Likewise, if you have iOS 11.4, then you're running Safari 11.

Another way to check the iOS version is to connect your phone to your computer. Open iTunes and select your phone in the list of devices to see the version in the information pane on the right.

Check Safari Version Online

If you'd rather not dig through your iPhone's menus and want to know the extended version number, there's a way to check your Safari version with the help of websites such as Spiderip and WhatIsMyBrowser. Use your phone's Safari app to visit the home page of one of these sites to see information about your version of Safari, your iOS version and other browser details.

Some sites immediately list the browser version on top to make it easy to find. For others, you need to do some extra work to look for a string of text called the "user agent." This string can be long and is separated with forward slashes. Look for the browser version information near the end, where you see a version identified like "12.0 Mobile" followed by text that mentions Safari. This example means you're running Safari 12.0.

These online tools work because they get information from your browser's user agent, which is a string of text identifying your device that is sent in the request made when you visit a website. Some of these tools can inform you if your browser or iOS version is outdated or whether your browser settings can cause some sites not to work properly.

Keep Safari Up to Date

Getting the latest iOS Safari version is as easy as updating your iPhone to the latest version of iOS. If you set your iPhone to install updates automatically, the phone notifies you when an update is ready and prompts you to install it. Otherwise, open the iPhone's Settings app, tap "General" and then select "Software Update." If you see a "Download and Install" button, tap it to start updating your phone's version of iOS.

If you prefer to use a computer and iTunes for the update process, use your iPhone's USB cable to connect the phone to your computer. After you launch iTunes, click the phone's name under "Devices" in the left pane and then click "Check for Update" in the right pane. If there's an update, iTunes prompts you to download and install it.

The current iPadOS version is 13.4. Hopefully you are using that version. If so, you have the very latest Safari version available for iPad.

Guide: How to use the new Safari in iOS 15

5th September, 2021 at 6:51 am by Ben W

  • The iOS 15 update redesigns the Safari browser with new tab bar design and hidden features.
  • There are ways to revert to the old design found in iOS 14 and older.

Apple has moved the address bar to the bottom of the display. Tapping it will open the Start page, with frequently visited sites and bookmarks. It also integrates the search results into the same page.

check safari version in ios

The relocated address bar is largely easier to use on larger devices, but can be moved back to the top. Apple provides the options in Settings > Safari to select the ‘Tab Bar’ design or ‘Single Tab’. You can also tap the ‘Aa’ icon on the address bar and select ‘Show Top Address Bar’.

Choosing the ‘Single Tab’ design will restore most of the functionality from the Safari UI in iOS 14. Similar to previous versions, the ‘Aa’ icon lets you change website settings and enable Reader View.

Pull To Refresh

check safari version in ios

To refresh a webpage in Safari in iOS 15, you can pull down from the top. This doesn’t replace the reload button, and you can still refresh using the icon in the address bar.

With the new design enabled, you can switch between tabs by swiping left or right in the address bar area. Swiping up and holding displays the list of tabs you have open.

This screen has been redesigned to show a greater number of tabs than before in a grid view. You can quickly close a tab or force touch on one to close every other tab.

Finally, Private Mode can be invoked by tapping the ‘X tabs’ link at the bottom, and selecting ‘Private’.

iOS 15 lets you save Safari tabs in Tab Groups, for easy access later on. For example, you could save multiple tabs in a group named ‘Work’ to ensure you don’t loose important webpages, while not having them open on your iPhone.

First, open up all the websites you want to add to a Tab Group. Tap the Tabs icon at the bottom left, then the ‘X tabs’ link. Select ‘New Tab Group from X tabs’, enter a name, then Save. You can then switch between these by tapping the group name at the bottom, selecting another group, or Start Page.

If you use Safari on multiple devices, such as an iPad, Mac, or another iPhone, Tab Groups will sync across those. You’ll need to be running iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey.

Redesigned Start Page

Last year, macOS Big Sur overhauled the Start Page in Safari, with customisable backgrounds and more control over what appears. iOS 15 brings the same capabilities.

check safari version in ios

On the Start Page, scroll down and tap ‘Edit’. Here, you can reduce the clutter on the page by tapping the toggles next to certain items. You can hide or show Favourites, Reading List, Frequently Visited, Siri Suggestions, iCloud Tabs, Privacy Report and Shared With You.

Apple also lets you apply a preset background image or add your own. To sync the Start Page preferences between devices, tap the toggle next to ‘Use Start Page on All Devices’.

iCloud Private Relay

iCloud Private Relay is built into iOS 15 and will encrypt traffic in Safari and other apps. It works by sending information to a server that will removed all personal data, like IP addresses. This data is then sent to another third-party server that will assign you a temporary IP address.

check safari version in ios

Private Relay can prevent anybody from snooping on your web activity and linking traffic to a user’s identity. The feature will launch with iOS 15 as a public beta amid reports of internet connection dropouts, and will likely be turned on by default in a future software update. You can check whether iCloud Private Relay is enabled by opening Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Private Relay (Beta).

Shared With You

This feature is system-wide in iOS 15 and works in iMessage, Safari, News, Apple Music, Podcasts, Apple TV and Photos. It works by displaying all links sent to you in iMessage in a Shared With You section on the Start Page in Safari. The feature will also support third party apps and ensures you can gather links sent by others so you don’t forget to open them. Tapping the sender’s name will launch iMessage where you can compose a response.

Other New Features

  • Voice Search: carry out a search with your voice by tapping the small microphone icon in the address bar.
  • Security improvements: Apple says Safari will now automatically upgrade sites to their HTTPS version if available.
  • Website Tinting: Safari now blends the collapsed address bar with the colors of webpages, if they support it.
  • Landscape UI: the UI that appears when using Safari in landscape has been redesigned to appear similar to that of Safari in iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey, with a compact tab bar design

That's everything new in Safari in iOS 15. This guide will be updated if further improvements are made to Safari. Apple is expected to launch iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey later this month.

Why is it important to check the version number of Safari browser?

Keeping your browser up to date is crucial for a smooth and secure browsing experience. Safari, Apple’s web browser, regularly releases updates that bring new features, improve performance, and fix security vulnerabilities. By checking the version number of your Safari browser, you can determine if you are using the latest version or if an update is available.

Security is one of the most important reasons to keep your Safari browser up to date. Browser updates often include patches for identified security vulnerabilities, protecting you from potential threats and intrusions. Cybercriminals are constantly evolving their tactics, and outdated software can be more vulnerable to attacks. By regularly checking for updates and installing the latest version of Safari, you ensure that your browsing experience is as secure as possible.

Another reason to check the Safari version number is compatibility. Websites and web applications are continually evolving, and they may require specific versions or features of the browser to function properly. 3. New Features and Enhancements: Safari updates often introduce new features and enhancements that can enhance your browsing experience. These may include improved privacy settings, new developer tools, enhanced search functionalities, and better compatibility with modern web standards. By updating, you can take advantage of these new features and enjoy a more enhanced browsing experience.

4. Compatibility: Websites and web applications are constantly evolving, and they often require specific browser versions or features to function correctly. By updating to the latest version of Safari, you ensure that you have the necessary compatibility with the latest web technologies. This helps prevent display issues, broken layouts, and incompatibility errors when browsing websites and using web applications.

5. Fixing Bugs and Issues: Software, including browsers like Safari, can have bugs and issues that affect the user experience. Regular updates often include bug fixes and performance enhancements, addressing these issues. By updating, you get access to these fixes, improving the stability and reliability of your browsing sessions.

It is worth noting that updating to the latest version of Safari is not only about the browser itself but also about keeping your entire system secure and up to date. Safari updates are often bundled with system updates, ensuring that your device has the latest security patches and improvements across all aspects of your operating system.

In summary, updating to the latest version of Safari is essential for your online security, browsing performance, and compatibility with modern web technologies. By regularly checking for updates and installing them, you can ensure a safer, faster, and more enjoyable browsing experience.

You can access this page by clicking on the Apple menu on your macOS device, selecting “System Preferences,” and then choosing “Software Update.”

3. App Store Updates: On iOS devices, you can check for Safari updates through the App Store. Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad, and navigate to the “Updates” tab. Look for Safari in the list of available updates. Tapping on the app will display a brief description of the update, including some key highlights and improvements. It may not provide as much detail as the official release notes, but it gives you a general idea of what to expect with the latest Safari update.

By accessing the release notes, you can stay informed about the changes and enhancements introduced in each Safari update. This information can help you understand the benefits of updating and decide whether it is necessary for your specific needs. It’s also a good practice to review the release notes before updating, especially if you have specific requirements or if there have been reported issues with certain versions.

Keeping Safari up to date is essential for security, performance, and compatibility, so it’s always a good idea to stay informed about the changes each update brings. By regularly checking the release notes, you can make informed decisions about updating your browser and ensure that you are benefiting from the latest features and improvements.

Troubleshooting common issues with Safari version updates

While updating Safari to the latest version is generally a smooth process, there are instances where users may encounter issues. Here are some common issues that you may encounter when updating Safari and troubleshooting steps to resolve them:

1. Crashing or Freezing: Occasionally, Safari may crash or freeze after an update. To troubleshoot this issue, try restarting your device and relaunching Safari. If the problem persists, clear Safari’s cache and cookies by going to Safari Preferences, clicking on the “Privacy” tab, and selecting “Manage Website Data.” From there, delete the stored data and restart Safari. If the issue continues, consider resetting Safari by going to “Safari” in the menu bar, selecting “Preferences,” and clicking on the “Advanced” tab. Finally, click on “Reset” and choose the options that best suit your needs.

2. Slow Performance: If Safari becomes slow or unresponsive after an update, try clearing the cache and cookies as mentioned earlier. Additionally, disable any unnecessary extensions or plugins that may be causing conflicts. Resetting Safari may also help resolve performance issues.

3. Compatibility Issues: Some websites or web applications may not work properly after a Safari update. Check if the website or application has provided any updates or patches to address compatibility issues. It’s also a good practice to disable any ad blockers or content blockers temporarily to see if they are causing the problem. If the issue persists, reach out to the website’s support team or search online forums for possible solutions.

4. Wi-Fi Connectivity Problems: In some cases, Safari updates can disrupt Wi-Fi connectivity. Restarting your device and router may resolve this issue. If the problem persists, try resetting the network settings on your device by going to “Settings,” then “General,” and selecting “Reset.” Choose “Reset Network Settings” and enter your device passcode if prompted.

5. UI or Display Issues: After updating Safari, you may encounter issues with the user interface or display, such as misplaced buttons, broken layouts, or blurry fonts. These issues are often related to website compatibility or CSS rendering. Clearing the cache and cookies can sometimes resolve these issues. If the problem persists, consider disabling any custom CSS or themes you may have installed and check for any available updates for those extensions.

Remember to always have a backup of your important data before performing any troubleshooting steps or major changes to your Safari settings. It is also recommended to regularly update your macOS or iOS device to the latest version, as operating system updates often include fixes and improvements that can indirectly resolve Safari issues.

If you continue to experience issues after trying these troubleshooting steps, consider reaching out to Apple Support or visiting Apple’s community forums for further assistance. They can provide more specific guidance based on your individual situation.

How to Check Your Version of iOS and iPadOS

Quick and easy steps to find out your version of iOS & iPadOS

check safari version in ios

  • University of Texas at Arlington
  • Switching from Android

What to Know

  • For iOS and iPadOS, select Settings app > General > About > Software Version .
  • To check for updates, Settings > General > Software Update .
  • You can also turn Automatic Updates on or off under Software Update .

This article explains how to check your version of iOS and iPadOS. Instructions apply to most iOS and iPad devices.

How to Find Your iOS Version

Here's how you can find out what version of iOS your device is running:

From the main menu on your iOS device, select the Settings app.

Scroll down and select General.

Select About . On the next screen, next to Software Version , you will find the version number of iOS currently downloaded on your device.

If your device is below 50% battery power, plug it in before starting the update process, as it will consume a lot of power.

If you're unsure if this is the most up to date version of iOS, return to the General menu and select Software Update . If your version if up to date it will say so here. If it is not you can download the newest version. You can also use this screen to toggle Automatic Updates on or off.

How to Find Your iPadOS Version

The instructions for finding the version number, checking the availability of updates, and turning Automatic Updates on and off is nearly identical on the iPadOS. Here's how to do it:

If you're unsure if this is the most up to date version of iOS, return to the General menu and select Software Update .

If your version if up to date it will say so here. If it is not you can download the newest version. You can also use this screen to toggle Automatic Updates on or off.

Why Is It Important to Update to the Newest Version of iOS and iPadOS?

In addition to squashing bugs and tuning performance, iOS and iPadOS updates include security fixes. It is difficult for malware to find its way onto an iPhone or iPad unless you  jailbreak it , but there are other vulnerabilities hackers can use to get to the information stored on your device. Security updates protect your device from these vulnerabilities.

Outdated or obsolete iOS devices may not be able to download the most recent version of iOS. This is because older devices may not have the memory or processing power needed to run the latest version of the operating system.

Safari Freezing on iPhone? Here Are 8 Fixes That Work

Darryl Dsouza

Safari is Apple’s default browser and many of us prefer using Safari due to the features it offers. Sadly, several users are encountering issues with Safari freezing on iOS 17. It can be a frustrating experience when you’re searching for something urgently but Safari refuses to function smoothly. Therefore, we’ve searched for the best solutions to fix this issue and put them together in this guide. Just follow these steps and you can easily fix Safari freezing on your iPhone.

How To Fix Safari Freezing on iOS 17

1. clear safari history.

Ever since Safari started freezing on iOS 17, several users have brought up the issue on Apple’s Community Discussions website. The silver lining to this dark cloud is that some users facing the issue have also mentioned solutions that helped them resolve it. One such solution is to Clear History and Website Data from Safari to fix Safari freezing on iOS 17.

Time needed:  1 minute

Steps to Clear History and Website Data from Safari on iPhone.

Clear Safari History

In most cases, when you clear history on Safari, it won’t log you out from any websites.

2. Disable iCloud Private Relay To Fix Safari Freezing on iOS 17

iCloud Private Relay is an exclusive feature only available to users with an iCloud+ subscription. While it is supposed to help protect users’ privacy when browsing the web through Safari, it might be the reason for Safari freezing. Several people have reported that disabling iCloud Private Relay helped fix the issue which is why we suggest you do the same.

  • Open Settings on your iPhone.
  • Tap the “ Your Name ” option located at the top.
  • Tap the iCloud option on the Apple ID page.
  • On the iCloud page, tap the Private Relay option.
  • Next, disable the Private Relay toggle.
  • A pop-up will display two options: Turn Off until Tomorrow and Turn Off Private Relay . If you select the former, Private Relay will automatically enable tomorrow at the same time you’ve disabled it and if you select the latter Private Relay will be permanently disabled.
  • Pick any option that you deem fit as you can easily re-enable Private Relay whenever you want.

3. Remove All Website Data

Safari is likely lagging on your iPhone due to Website Data. For those unaware, Website Data includes files, images, cookies, etc. of websites you visit or have visited. This stored data helps speed up the load times of previously visited websites. However, they also occupy a good chunk of storage over an extended period. Therefore, deleting website data might help fix the issue.

  • Open Settings on your iPhone and navigate to Safari .

Head to Advanced in Safari Settings

  • Tap the Website Data button.

Tap the Remove All Website Data button To Fix Safari Freezing on iOS 17

  • Tap the Remove Now button to confirm your selection.

If you’d like to further optimize and clean your iPhone, I always recommend a reliable maintenance app like Intego Washing Machine because it has a dedicated iOS and macOS cleaning engine that gets rid of unnecessary files, build-up files, and stored data from your system, getting your device at its best performance.

4. Force Restart iPhone To Fix Safari Freezing on iOS 17

In case your iPhone is completely frozen and not responding ever since you opened Safari, you must force restart it. Simply because it’s the most convenient way to restart your iPhone. Moreover, it will also help get rid of temporary bugs that might be leading to freezing issues in Safari.

Steps to Force Restart iPhone (iPhone 8, iPhone SE 2nd Gen and above)

  • Press and release the volume up button .
  • Press and release the volume down button .
  • Next, press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
  • As soon as you see the Apple logo, release the Side button . Please do not release the Side button before the Apple logo appears on the screen.

Steps to Force Restart iPhone

Even though older iPhone models don’t support iOS 17, you can still encounter freezing issues in Safari. Therefore, we’ve mentioned the steps to help you force restart your iPhone.

Steps to Force Restart iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus

Press and hold the Volume down and Side buttons simultaneously. Release the buttons once the Apple logo appears.

Steps to Force Restart iPhone 6s or below

Press and hold the Side and Home buttons simultaneously. Release the buttons once the Apple logo appears.

5. Disable Extensions To Fix Safari Freezing on iOS 17

Have you added one too many extensions to Safari on your iPhone? Safari may be freezing or lagging due to multiple or buggy extensions. We suggest disabling Safari extensions as it can help resolve the issue.

  • Tap the Extensions button located in the General menu.
  • Now, tap the Extension you want to disable.
  • On the next screen, disable the “ Extensions Name ” toggle.
  • Repeat this step for every extension you’ve enabled for Safari.
  • Restart your iPhone.
  • Now open Safari and check if the issue is resolved.

If the Safari freezing issue persists, follow the next step.

6. Disable Safari Suggestion

Safari Suggestions interfering with the normal functioning of Safari is an old bug in iOS. There are chances that it has resurfaced and is causing Safari to freeze. Therefore, we suggest disabling Safari suggestions as it might help fix the freezing issues.

  • Navigate to Safari .
  • Disable the Safari Suggestion toggle.

Disable Safari Suggestion

7. Reset Network Settings

Safari might be freezing or not loading properly because it cannot establish a stable internet connection. This can happen due to misconfigured network settings. Hence, resetting these network settings might help fix Safari freezing issues on iPhones.

  • Open Settings on your iPhone and head to the General option.
  • Here, scroll down and select the Transfer or Reset iPhone option.
  • On the next page, tap the Reset option.
  • Then select the Reset Network Settings option.
  • Enter the device passcode to confirm your selection.
  • Tap the Reset Network Settings option in the pop-up to confirm your selection.

8. Update iOS To Fix Safari Freezing on iOS 17

Finally, software bugs in Safari or iOS 17 might be the primary reason Safari is freezing. Since Safari is a part of the operating system, we can’t update it from the App Store as it updates along with iOS. Moreover, software bugs that have made their way to stable iOS versions are usually fixed with iOS updates. Therefore, updating to the latest version of iOS might be your best bet to fix Safari freezing on your iPhone.

  • Open Settings on your iPhone.
  • Navigate to the General option.
  • Tap the Software Update option on the next screen.
  • Here, tap the Install Now or Update Now button to update your iPhone to the latest iOS version.
  • Enter your device’s passcode to continue.

Update iOS to the latest version To Fix Safari Freezing on iOS 17

If none of these methods help fix Safari freezing issues, the last option is to contact Apple Support . Alternatively, you can also visit an official Apple Store and get your device inspected at the Genius Bar. We hope this guide helps you fix Safari freezing on iOS 17. If you have any doubts or are aware of other methods that help resolve the issue, please let us know in the comments below.

iOS versions: Every version of iOS from the oldest to the newest

Martyn Casserly

iOS is at the heart of the iPhone experience. It’s the operating system on which everything else sits, while also delivering plenty of features and dedicated apps built by Apple itself. If you’ve ever wondered about when versions came out, how you can check the one you’re currently using, or how to update to the latest iteration, we have the answers. Here’s our whistlestop tour of iOS.

iOS version history

iOS made its debut in 2007 alongside the first iPhone. However, when Steve Jobs held the little device aloft revealing it to the world for the first time, it wasn’t running iOS 1. Instead, it was reported by Apple to be powered by OS X , the software for the Mac. Over time it was called iPhone OS, until finally gaining its now legendary name in the fourth generation of the software when it was shortened to iOS in 2010.

Significant milestones are scattered across the iOS timeline, with the first being the introduction of the App Store in iPhone OS 2 in 2008. iOS 4 saw the iPad joining the scene and using the operating system alongside the iPhone.

iOS 5 was introduced along with the iPhone 4S in 2011, which saw the debut of Siri as a built-in part of the operating system. Sadly, this was the last version of the software to be released when Apple CEO and Founder Steve Jobs was still alive.

Steve Jobs with original iPhone

Things changed significantly in iOS 11 in 2017 as it brought the first touch and gesture interface, allowing the first iPhone without a Home button–the iPhone X.

Another major shift was with iOS 13 in 2019, as it marked the bifurcation of Apple’s mobile operating systems, with iPhones staying on iOS but the newly announced iPadOS powering the new iPads. This would continue through to the present day, although the version numbers have stayed in sync, with the latest ones being iOS 16 and iPadOS 16.

iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 are the latest versions of the software. You can install iOS 17 and get iPadOS 17 now.

Which iOS versions are currently supported?

In terms of new features, only iOS 17 is currently supported by Apple. For those with iPhones that only run older versions of iOS though, Apple does still support iOS 16, and possibly iOS 15, with security updates. Apple appears set to continue to support iOS 15 for the iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhones 7 and 7 Plus, and iOS 16 for the iPhones 8 and 8 Plus.

iOS 14 and iOS 13 are considered obsolete by Apple because the same phones that can run those operating systems can run iOS 15. In January 2023 Apple issued a security update for iOS 12, but it is unlikely to issue another. The iPhones 6, 6 Plus and 5S, and some iPads, will likely be left out in the cold as they only support iOS 12. Luckily, many iPhones are able to run supported versions of iOS. See: How long does Apple support iPhones?

We run through which iPhone supports which version of iOS in a separate article: iOS compatibility: Find out the latest version your iPhone can run.

How to tell which version of iOS your iPhone is running

If you’re not sure which version of iOS you’re currently using, it’s very easy to find out. Just go to Settings > General > About and look for the iOS Version number. It’s the same steps for iPadOS.

How to check which version of iOS you are using

How to install the latest version of iOS

Updating your iPhone to the latest version of iOS is simple, so long as your device is compatible. This doesn’t require much detective work though, as your iPhone will know whether it is eligible for the upgrade or not.

To find out, go to Settings > General > Software Update , and your iPhone will check to see if there are any available. You may also see a notification on the Settings page that says ‘Software Update Available’, which you can click to go straight to the update page. iPadOS works the same way.

How to update iOS

If there are no updates, you’ll see a message along the lines of ‘iOS is up to date’. Should there be one available, it should tell you on the screen and give you the option to ‘Download and Install’. Do this and your iPhone will automatically apply the update and bring your software to the latest version.
