Constanta on Map

Constanta lies on the western coast of the Black Sea , 185 miles north of Istanbul and Bosphorus Strait (Turkey) and 100 miles north of port of Varna (Bulgaria). Romania's oldest continuously inhabited city and the country's largest sea port, Constanta traces its history some 2,500 years. Originally called Tomis, legend has it that Constanta was visited by Jason and the Argonauts after finding the Golden Fleece. Founded by Greek colonists from Miletos in the 6th century BC, Tomis was conquered by the Romans in 71 BC and renamed Constantiana by Roman Emperor Constantine the Great, in honor of his sister. Constanta flourished during the 13th century, when Genoese merchants dominated the Black Sea but, the city began to decline two centuries later, when it fell under Turkish rule. During the Ottoman era its name was shortened to Constanta . Fine mansions and hotels were built at the end of the 19th century when King Carol I decided to revive Constanta as a port and seaside resort. Constanta is today one of Romania's largest cities and an important cultural and economic centre, worth exploring for its archaeological treasures and the Old Town's architecture. Its historical monuments, ancient ruins, grand Casino, museums and shops, and proximity to beach resorts make it the focal point of Black Sea coast tourism. Open-air restaurants, nightclubs and cabarets offer a wide variety of entertainment.

Constanta is the largest Black Sea port (9,700 acres) the fourth largest (size) in Europe, after Rotterdam, Antwerp and Marseille, and the 16th busiest (merchandise volume/ thousand tonnes).

Sandy beaches of the Black Sea, old villages, wineries, ancient monuments and the Danube Delta are the best known attractions in or near Constanta.

Constanta - Histria

Heading north from Constanta towards Tulcea, you'll pass through Istria. Four miles east of the village, on the shores of Lake Sinoe, is the ruined Greek-Roman city of Histria. Histria Fortress, the Pompeii of Romania, was the oldest Greek settlement in Romania. Founded in the 7th Century BC by Greeks from Miletos, the richest city in Ionia (Asia Minor), this trading post soon became the main Greek port on the Black Sea. The city thrived for fourteen centuries, prospering under Roman and Byzantine occupation until invading forces wiped it off the map in the 7th century AD.

The lost city features remains of Aphrodite's Temple, the Temple of Zeus, Roman baths and other public buildings from the Roman-Byzantine period. The nearby museum (Open: Tue. - Sun 9:00am - 8:00pm; Closed Mon.) houses a collection of coins, ceramic items and other vestiges of the great civilizations that thrived on the Black Sea coast, or Pontus Euxin's, at it was called in ancient times.

Near Histria Fortress, you can visit one of the most beautiful lagoons in the country, Lake Sinoe , an extension of Lake Razim. The lake makes for an excellent bird watching site; 267 species have been recorded. The area is a stretch of marshy land and reedbeds between the freshwater Lake Nuntasi and the brackish lagoon of Lake Sinoe (the last one was open to the sea until 1960). Lake Razim is popular for bird-watching, especially in November when thousands of Red-Breasted Geese arrive from the Arctic.

"Capul Dolosman" is one of the strictly protected areas of the Delta Biosphere Reserve. This is popular spot for bird-watching, especially in November when thousands of Red-Breasted Geese arrive from the Arctic Circle. Nearby you can explore Lake Razim, once a bay on the Black Sea knows as the Gulf of Halmyris. A thin coastal strop of land encloses the lake from the open waters. In Jurilovca you can rent a boat to take you across to Gura Portitei (1 ½ hours away) on the shores of Lake Golovita.

The town of Babadag, known during the Roman rule as Vicus Novium , was first documented in 1263. Between 1262 and 1264 some 12,000 Turks, led by Sara Saltuk Baba, settled around Babadag at the request of Byzantine emperor Michael III. Between 1677 and 1678, the residence of Pasha of Silistra was established here to better observe the troop movements of the Russians, with whom Turkey was at war.

The name of the town comes from Baba (meaning father in Arabic) and Dagh (meaning mountain). Legend has it that a few centuries ago, here lived a shepherd called Korun Baba. One day, while leading his flock, he met some Turkish monks who asked him of Sari Saltuk's tomb. The shepherd answered that he knows nothing of this tomb, but that he noticed that on the mountain's peak, his sheep avoid a place covered with stones. The monks started digging that place, and at sunset found the bones of the saint. Then the monks raised the mausoleum that can still be seen standing today. Upon the shepherd's death, the locals buried him close to the Muslim saint. Legend also has it that the very place where the shepherd rested, the earth split in two, in order to mark the tomb.

The Museum of Oriental Art in Babadag is worth paying a visit. Its collections feature wooden, ivory and mother-of-pearl artifacts, religious items, daggers, tea services, a splendid bridal gown sawn with gold thread, Turkish dolls, Siraz, Sirme , and Anatolia carpets, and Kashmir shawls said to have taken a quarter of century to make.

Other places of interest here include the Ali-Gazi-Pasha Mosque, the oldest in Romania (1522), and the nearby Kalaigi spring, in which the pilgrims from all over the Balkans come to bathe their feet. Visitors are also shown the ruined tomb of Ali-Gazi-Pasha, who long ago, was the terror of the region and possessed a harem of eight hundred captive women. More info on Babadag

Constanta City Guide: A Brief History Of Constanta, Romania

For travelers seeking to immerse themselves in the rich historical tapestry of Constanta, a city steeped in antiquity, the past beckons with intriguing tales and timeless wonders. Let us delve into the captivating history of Constanta, Romania’s coastal gem , as we uncover its ancient origins and the civilizations that have shaped its character.

Dating back over 2,500 years, Constanta traces its roots to the ancient Greek colony of Tomis. Founded by Greek colonists from Miletus, Tomis thrived as an important trading port along the Black Sea. It was in these hallowed grounds that the renowned philosopher Ovid, exiled by Emperor Augustus, spent his final years, penning poignant verses that would transcend time.

During the Roman era, Tomis was integrated into the vast Roman Empire and flourished under Roman rule. The city was renamed Constantiana by Emperor Constantine the Great in the 4th century AD, in honor of his sister. Marvel at the remnants of this illustrious past in the Archaeological Park, where mosaic floors from Roman villas reveal intricate designs that evoke the grandeur of the ancient world.

The Byzantine Empire left its indelible mark on Constanta as well. During the Byzantine era, the city served as an important fortress and trading hub, guarding the eastern frontier of the empire. Byzantine influences can still be admired in the exquisite frescoes of the Great Mahmudiye Mosque, which reflect the artistic mastery of this era.

Constanta’s allure continued to grow through the medieval ages. The city passed through the hands of various powers, including the Genoese and the Ottomans, each leaving their own architectural imprints. Explore the enchanting labyrinth of the Historic Center, where pastel-hued buildings and narrow cobblestone streets harken back to this bygone era.

The city’s cosmopolitan character blossomed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Influenced by the Belle Époque era, Constanta witnessed a surge of architectural brilliance, most notably exemplified by the iconic Constanta Casino. This exquisite Art Nouveau masterpiece, perched on the edge of the sea, became a symbol of the city’s elegance and glamour.

As you wander through Constanta’s streets, you will encounter vestiges of diverse cultures that have shaped its identity. From the Jewish Quarter to the Armenian Church, from the Greek and Roman ruins to the Ottoman-inspired mosques, the city’s mosaic of influences tells a tale of cultural exchange and coexistence.

Constanta’s rich history not only unfolds within its architectural marvels but also within the hearts of its people. Their warm hospitality and pride in their city’s heritage infuse every encounter, offering visitors a deeper connection to the tapestry of the past.

As you traverse the pathways of Constanta, allow yourself to be transported through time, immersing yourself in the narratives of ancient civilizations and the echoes of a storied past. Let the city’s historical treasures guide your steps and ignite your imagination, as you embark on a journey through Constanta’s captivating history.

Constanta Top Attractions and Best Places to Visit in Romania

When summer arrives in Romania , it arrives with a vengeance. When the heat becomes too much, many Romanians head to the Black Sea coast for relief. Of all the spots on this inland ocean, Constanta is among the most popular.

However, there is more to this place than just the beach. Our Constanta travel guide covers the myriad fantastic museums, mosques, and cathedrals that will keep cultural travellers happy as well .

Come check out our Constanta travel guide as we cover the best things to do in Constanta, Romania.

Begin your time in Constanta by visiting The Mosque of Constanta . Opened in 1913, it became known as the Carol I Mosque after the monarch of Romania inaugurated it. Today, many simply call this place the King Mosque.

The architecture of this mosque is primarily neo-Byzantine and neo-Egyptian, with elements of neo-Romanesque influence. This mosque’s minaret stands out from the rest of the structure, as architects built it in the neo-Moorish style. With a height of 48 metres, it looms over its neighbourhood in Constanta.

Unlike others, you can climb the minaret in this mosque. The climb is arduous, but it is worth it, as this tower boasts commanding views over Constanta. There is an entry fee. However, at 5 lei (1 USD), it is very affordable.

After touring the mosque, learn more about the history of Constanta at the Museum of National History and Archeology . The building itself is attractive, as its architects built it in the Romanian style in the late 1800s.

Within, you’ll find local artifacts stretching from the Paleolithic to modern times. In all, this institution has over 400,000 pieces in its collection. These items span an eclectic range – tools, weapons, ceramics, and coins are just a few of them. In addition to Romanian artifacts, you’ll also find things from Ancient Rome, Greece and other medieval kingdoms.

Note that some exhibits lack English captions. However, given the quality of artifacts and the 1 USD entry fee, this museum is still worth a visit .

Next, make your way over to the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul . Founded in 1895, this church’s crafters built in in the Greco-Roman style. It had a close brush with destruction in the Second World War. One night, a bombing raid partially destroyed this beautiful structure.

Fortunately, authorities restored this landmark after the cessation of hostilities. Standing 35 metres above the street below, it remains a defining feature of this city. Inside, its wooden iconostasis and frescoes are its highlights.

Its beauty makes it a favourite among visiting tourists . However, don’t be like the disrespectful ones – remain quiet, don’t use flash photography, and dress modestly.

This stately building took its last bet a while ago. Despite this, the Constanta Casino continues to draw visitors. This Art Nouveau beauty sits in ruins today. However, back in the early 1900s, it was a favoured hang out of Romanian elites.

This golden age ended with the Second World War, as Russian, Romanian, and Axis troops fought over it. After the war, the Communist Party took over the building, turning it into a house of culture . It served as an office for the Ministry of Tourism, after which the government abandoned it in the 80s.

Officially, visitation is not allowed. Unofficially, however, local guides may be able to arrange a low-key visit to this gorgeous structure. If this makes you uncomfortable, the exterior of this building is still worth a visit.

Other Cultural Attractions: Trip to Constanta, Romania

Romanians love Constanta as a resort destination, as it sits on the coast of the Black Sea . There are many beaches in the area, but locals love Mamaia Beach best. Its fine sands help it stand out among its competitors. During peak season, though, sun lounger availability can be scarce – get there early!

After the sun goes down, the action moves to the restaurants, bars, and clubs nearby. Join Romanians on holiday there and have a great night out. One last note – try to visit earlier in the summer. As the season wears on, the water warms up, promoting the growth of unsightly algae.

Get a great view of the coast and the city of Constanta from the top of the Mamaia Gondola . The ride carries you over Constanta’s downtown and beach over a distance of three kilometres. We don’t recommend going during the heat of the day, as its cars lack air conditioning. The view at night is illuminating, and with cars running until 11:30 pm, a trip then is more alluring.

Need a break from the beach? Check out the Aquarium of Constanta . Sitting adjacent to the defunct Constanta Casino, it used to be a restaurant for that resort. In 1958, the government converted it into an aquarium, a function it continues to serve to this day. With over 100 species of fish, it’s a fun diversion from the usual resort town shenanigans.

Lastly, spend some time chilling out in Ovidiu Square . It’s a popular hangout spot for locals, and by night, its restaurants and pubs are the places to see and be seen.

Constanta, Romania

Constanta is a beach town on the Black Sea with an amazing 13km long beachfront. It is a vibrant place that comes alive in the summer months. It is close to the major beach resort of Mamaia, and a dozen other smaller resorts. It is a great holiday destination that rivals most of the well-known European sun spots such as Ibiza.

Tourist Accommodation in Constanta

History of constanta, overview of constanta, romania.

Constanta is positioned in the Dobrogea region , which is located in the south-east of Romania.

Around the city is an important metropolitan area which makes Constanta the third largest city in Romania, after Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca .

The metropolitan stretch is formed by 13 other cities:

  • Mihail Kogalniceanu
  • Poarta Alba
  • Techirghiol
  • Valu lui Traian

Constanta is set on the Black Sea coast and has 13km long beach.

I was born in Constanta, Romania and it is where I grew up and spent all of my childhood as well. This means Constanta holds a lot of beautiful memories for me — since I spent a large part of my life there.

It’s a wonderful place to visit especially in the summer, as it has the Black Sea with its beautiful beach resorts . One of the most widely known beach resorts in Constanta is Mamaia , located in the north edge of the town. In my opinion this is the best beach resort in Romania – especially if you are young and looking for some fun.

Mamaia is an administrative district of Constanta and it’s the most modern resort on the Romanian coast. It is sunny all day due to it’s 7km long beach which faces east.

I think my favorite thing about Constanta is the sea with its lovely beaches. I love how full of life it is in the summer when tourists from all over Romania and abroad come to enjoy its beauty.

Climate & Weather

Constanta is particular warm with 4 distinct seasons during the year.

My favorite season is summer, when the weather is perfect for enjoying outside activities, going to the beach and taking advantage of everything the city has to offer.

Summer starts in late May and it lasts until September though the highest temperatures are in July (the month in which my B-day is) and August when there are average temperatures of 25 °C.

Autumn starts gradually with warm and sunny days giving people time to accept the ending of summer.

It happened sometimes for September to be as warm and nice as June making rain a surprise when it finally occurred.

  • The Archaeology Park

So it is best to carry an umbrella in September.

From personal experience, it could rain quite a lot in this month.

The winter does not bring plenty of snow though it is pretty windy and the average temperatures in December are 0 °C – 1 °C.

Compared to other regions in Romania , Constanta has usually a mild type of winter.

Though the climate changes that lately started to affect all our planet, transformed Constanta`s winters into harsher ones.

In the last 2 years (2011 and 2012) winter brought to Constanta (and not only as it affected all Romania) a lot of snow and cold, even freezing the Sea.

When spring arrives it is a delight as everyone is anxious for the weather to get warmer and warmer.

The first flowers shyly appear, such as teardrops, at the surface through the melting snow.

The average temperatures in March are 8 °C.

Address: Str. Tudor Vladimirescu 4 Tel: (241) 255.100 or 255.762 Web: www.mk-airport.ro

This is the main airport for Dobrogea — the region where Constanta is located — and it offers access to the Constanta County and to all of the Black Sea Romanian Resorts .

This airport it`s not as big as the main international airport in Bucharest .

Constanta`s Train Station

Constanta Train Station Address: Blvd. Ferdinand 45 Tel: (241) 614.960

When it comes to traveling by train, there are no reasons to worry as daily routes cover the connections to all the major cities in Romania.

Between Constanta and Bucharest there is a daily Intercity (Express) service and the journey between these them is approximately 4 hours.

In the summer time there are quite a few daily trains every half-hour that connect Constanta to all the Black Sea resorts .

For checking the latest train schedules and their routes, you can visit the Romanian Railways website

For booking train tickets up to 24 hours in advance you can use SNCFR’s Advance Booking Office Address: Str. Vasile Carnache 4, Constanta Tel: (241) 614.960 Open: Monday – Friday: 7:30am – 7:00pm;

Saturday 8:00am -12:00pm;

Closed on Sunday

Though tickets for same-day travel can only be purchased at the station.

If you are traveling from Bucharest to Constanta, the, most popular and recommended route would be The Sun Motorway (as it is called) or also known as A2 motorway.

The distance between Bucharest and Constanta on this motorway is 202 km. This is a new highway that opened in November 2012 cutting journey times in Romania.

Constanta`s Harbour is the finishing point for voyage ships and private boats via the Bosphorus Strait or the Danube River.

There are several options of transport in Constanta:

By bus & Trolley Bus

The price of a ticket is about £0.69.

Make sure you stamp your ticket when you board.

When it comes to choosing a taxi, it is better knowing which company is trust worthy.

This way you will avoid any independent cab driver that might not go by the legal rules and overcharge you.

Here are some well-known trustful companies:

Mondial – (241) 693.333

Romaris – (241) 690.000

Sageata – (241) 638.000

Mihai – (241) 516.000

Maxi Taxi are mini-buses that are covering all the area of Constanta.

In the summer some of the mini buses go to Mamaia resort as well.

Constanta City Tour

Constanta City Tour Bus

This is another way of transportation but is mainly destined for tourists as the buses assigned have a particular route through Constanta.

Buses that make the tour of Constanta are available only during the summer season.

Tickets for Constanta City Tour can only be purchased on boarding and the cost is about £ 0.79.

Because of its rich heritage that includes Greek, Turkish and Roman influences, Constanta has ancient ruins and historic landmarks such as:

  • The House with Lions
  • Ovidiu`s Square
  • The Roman Mosaics
  • The Great Mahmudiye Mosque

The Genoese Lighthouse

Other tourist attractions include:

  • The Fantasio Theatre
  • Holiday Village
  • Natural Science Museum
  • Aqua Magic Park

Modern Beach

Constanta has a beach called Modern which is only 5 minutes away from the center.

Though for a richer experience on Constanta`s beaches the best way is heading to the resorts along the Black Sea coast.

In my opinion here are the best Romanian resorts that are stretched along the Black Sea coast:

Constanta’s Harbour

Constanta Harbour

Constanta has the largest port in the Black Sea and the fourth most important in Europe spread over an area of 3182 ha (land & water).

Each day more than 200 ships are in the port loading and unloading goods or waiting to be operated.

The strongest feature of Constanta’s Harbour is the connection that it has with the Danube river made through the Danube – Black Sea Canal.

You won’t have trouble in finding a hotel in Constanta or its closest resort, Mamaia .

Being a popular tourist resort means there is a wide range of options when it comes to accommodation.

Hostels and hotels are spread throughout Constanta and along Mamaia resort as well.

Rex Hotel in Mamaia

Depending on your preferences, there are affordable and luxury hotels from which to choose.

  • 3* hotels can be found, starting from £15 to £50 /per night
  • 4* hotels are from £40 to £70/per night
  • 5* range from £60 to £255/per night

Most hotels have their own parking space and of course internet access or wi-fi.

The staff will  speak English, as this is a very well-known language among people from Romania, especially employees of hostels and hotels.

Shopping in Constanta

City Park Mall

There are many locations in Constanta where you can shop for all sorts of things: starting with food to clothing and accessories.

There is a wide diversity and though a few years back, the center of Constanta was the most frequented for shopping, nowadays there are a couple of shopping centers in other areas.

So if you want to enjoy a nice shopping spree, here are a couple of places that I would recommend:

Casino area of Mamaia

  • Maritimo Shopping Center

These places are well known in Constanta for their varied range of options when it comes to nice clothing items, jewellery and accessories.

Another place where you can shop for lovely and cute things is Mamaia resort, but only during the summer.

If you like to enjoy a nice long walk along Mamaia Resort, you will be surprised of how many shops and kiosks you will find packed with all types of stuff.

Constanta was first founded under the name of Tomis following the Greek colonisation of Pontus Euxinus by Greek colonists from Miletus in VII-V century BC.

That makes Constanta the oldest town in Romania. The city`s past was revealed by documents dating from 657 BC.

In that time a Greek colony was occupying Tomis, known today as Constanta.

Back then there were frequent battles for conquering one piece of land.

So the settlement was conquered by the Romans in 71 BC and renamed Constantiana after the sister of Constantine the Great.

During the 13 th century, Italian merchants from Genoa took over The Great Sea (as The Black Sea was called then) and actually helped develop the city.

Those circumstances didn’t last much though, as subsequently, the Ottoman Empire occupied Constanta. During their sovereignty reached decay, as it became a simple fishing village inhabited by Greeks and Tatars breeders of horses and sheep.

This land`s location regained its city status and high importance, after Cernavoda-Constanta Railway was built in 1865 along with the Port which facilitated the Romanian grain exports.

Only after the War of Independence (1877-1878) Dobrogea region became part of Romania`s Kingdom and remained that way until nowadays, increasing its role constantly, as part of the country.

Itinerary of One Day Tour from Bucharest to Constanta Romania

The first part of the one-day tour from Bucharest to Constanta will find us on the highway to Constanta, crossing the bridge over the Danube  (the first bridge was built in 1895 by the Romanian engineer Anghel Saligny during King Carol I). Also, we will pass  the Nuclear Power Plant made by a Canadian Company starting at the beginning of 1978. After 3 hours of driving, we will reach  Constanta  where we head to  the Historical Center.

Constanta  is the oldest town attested on the Romanian territory. The first documentary attestation of this city dates back to  657 BC when the area was founded by a Greek colony called Tomis. The Greek settlements have been conquered by the Romans in 71 BC and renamed Constantiana, after the sister of the Roman Emperor Constantin the Great. During the 13th Century, the Italian merchants from Genova developed the town. Constanta declined during the Ottoman rule period. After the Romanian War of Independence 1877-1878, Constanta rose back and has been developed until the present as the largest harbor in Romania.

Sights we visit in Constanta:

The Museum of Archeology and History Constanta Founded in 1878, the museum contains relics and pieces of architecture from the Greek and Roman period.

The Roman Edifice with mosaic (temporarily closed for renovation) Discovered in 1959 by archaeological excavations, the edifice reveals an original Roman Mosaic, part of the commercial harbor, dating back to the 4th Century.

The statue of Ovidius The statue represents Publius Ovidius Naso (43BC-17AC). The statue is in the Ovidiu Square and was built in 1887 by the Italian sculptor Ettore Ferrari.

The Muslim Mosque Built between 1910-1912 as an homage to the local Muslim community, the inauguration was made in the presence of Carol I (the first king of Romania). It was first named Carol I and later it was renamed Mahmud the Second. Going up in the Minaret Tower, you can have a splendid panoramic view of the entire city of Constanta.

The Orthodox Cathedral The Orthodox Cathedral Saints Peter and Paul were built between 1883-1895 by the famous Romanian architect Ion Mincu. It is a monument of Byzantine architectural style.

The Aquarium Constanta (temporarily closed for renovation) Inaugurated in 1958 as the first public aquarium in Romania, you can see here a variety of fish species, including an extensive collection of sturgeons.

After lunch, the day ends with the driving back to Bucharest.

How long in advance can I cancel my booking if I cannot travel?

You can cancel with a full refund at least 24h before departure. Please send us an email at least 24h before departure.
