Buying a Sim Card for Norway in 2023

tourist sim card norway

Planning a trip to Norway? No need to tell you that this is one of the most expensive countries in the world. Saving a little money on high roaming charges would be great and therefore I recommend either an e-sim card for Norway or buying a prepaid sim card on arrival in Norway.

This is a complete guide for finding the best way to stay connected when traveling to Norway. Find out everything about buying a prepaid sim card in Norway, where to buy a sim card, the best e-sim cards for Norway, up to date prices as per August 2023, the best 4G/5G network in Norway, my recommendation, info about international sim cards and more.

Although super expensive, I love traveling to Norway. Its utterly stunning landscapes blow me away every time I visit and road trips in Norway are simply incredible.

If you arrive at Oslo Airport then you can also buy a sim card at Oslo Airport . Check out my guide in the link.

On Traveltomtom you can find more than 200 sim card guides from all over the world: Europe , Asia , USA , Canada ,  Dubai , Bali , Hong Kong , Singapore ,  Thailand ,  Finland , Sweden , United Kingdom , Miami , Istanbul , Saudi Arabia , Egypt and many more.

So next time you are traveling abroad come check out Traveltomtom for the latest e-sim card and prepaid sim card advice for your holiday destination.

Why buying a sim card for Norway?

First of all a local prepaid sim card saves you from high roaming charges and slow overseas data roaming packages. It is the best way to get connected when using a lot of data. However, the easiest way is an e-sim card nowadays as you arrange everything in a few simple steps online.

Most local bars, restaurants and of course hotels offer fast and reliable public WiFi, but there is no guarantee it is working or fast enough. Just don't rely on others and another reminder that surfing the internet on public WiFi is through an unsecured network. The use of a VPN is recommended in these cases.

Also when road tripping in Norway distances are long. Trust me you want to be connected when driving in Norway, Google Maps will be your best friend to look for nearby gas stations, restaurants, get directions, etc. Many reasons I could come up with for staying connected when traveling to Norway.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim cards for Norway as it turns out to be cheaper than buying a local prepaid sim card for Norway on arrival. In case you decide to buy a prepaid sim card in Norway then Traveltomtom recommends a Telenor sim card for Norway. They have the best 4G/5G network and they offer prepaid sim cards for tourists with large data bundles. But those are not cheap!

However, the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Norway AND the cheapest way to stay connected is an e-sim card. E-sim cards for Norway already start from $4.5 USD and for $21 USD you already get 10 GB data. For $49.90 USD you get 20 GB + unlimited calling and texting and you can arrange everything online, right here, right now! More info below.

If you are considering to get a travel sim card with global coverage you should read my article about the best international prepaid and e-sim cards in 2023 . There are some great sim card deals available for traveling in Norway.

When ordering a prepaid or e-sim card for traveling in Europe  always double check if Norway is included in the FREE data roaming. Norway is a European country, but NORWAY IS NOT PART OF THE EU!

Best e-sim cards for Norway

There are also e-sim cards for Norway that include calling and texting. These international e-sim cards are valid all over Europe in up to 70 countries around the world:

Before ordering an e-sim card for Norway make sure your phone is unlocked and your phone is e-sim compatible. E-sim cards only work in the newer smartphones. To make sure simply ask Google, they know everything!

However, not every phone is e-sim compatible and for therefore you can also still order an international prepaid sim card for Norway. For $49.90 USD you get 20 GB data + unlimited calls in Europe. Norway sim cards and EU roaming

Although Norway is NOT part of the EU, some Norway prepaid sim cards have free EU roaming included. Always check first with the mobile internet provider when buying a sim card in Norway. Ask them if EU roaming is included if you are traveling onwards to other countries in Europe and what are the limitations.

You can easily avoid this by buying a prepaid sim card or e-sim card for traveling in Europe . Check out my comparison of the best sim cards for Europe in 2023 in the link.

Mobile internet operators in Norway

There always used to be 2 mobile internet operators in Norway, but there is now a 3th one called Ice. Ice is a pure 4G mobile data network provider and although it recently announced it surpassed 800,000 mobile costumers, its mobile data network is still very limited. Therefore an Ice sim card is not recommended for traveling in Norway and Traveltomtom left Ice out of its comparison finding the best sim card for Norway.

In fact ICE Norway does not even sell prepaid sim cards for tourists.

The main mobile internet providers in Norway are Telenor and Telia. Both mobile operators are also present in neighbouring country Sweden .

At Oslo Airport you can also buy a Lycamobile sim card for Norway, but that is a so-called MVNO. Lycamobile Norway operates on the network of Telia and Telenor in Norway.

Where to buy a sim card for Norway

Oslo airport.

The most convenient place to buy a sim card in Norway is of course on arrival at Oslo Airport. Check out my guide for  buying a sim card at Oslo Gardermoen Airport  for more detailed info.

Mobile internet provider stores

There are official Telenor and Telia retail stores in the city center of every city in Norway. Everyone speaks English and is very helpful. If you decide to buy a prepaid sim card on arrival in Norway and you missed the opportunity to buy a sim card at Oslo Airport then Traveltomtom recommends to go to an official retail store. In these stores they give you the best service, the best advice and they make sure your sim card and data plan is working when you walk out of the store.

Convenience stores and gas stations

In some bigger convenience stores you can also get a Lycamobile sim card, but it is not common. The same counts for gas stations. Recommended? Not really, because you have to activate the sim card and data packages yourself and if something doesn't properly work you still have to go to an official mobile phone store.

The easiest place to buy a sim card for Norway is of course on the internet. As I already showed you buying an e-sim card for traveling to Norway is very easy through either Airalo or SimOptions . But for those who don't have an e-sim compatible phone there is the option to order an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Norway .

Best 4G/5G network in Norway in 2023

Not only the price determines the best sim card for Norway, the network coverage is also important, especially if you are going on a Norway road trip. We don't want to get stuck with a 3G signal! Norway is a huge country and I traveled around in the South only, but even there I came across many places with little to no phone signal. I guess that is the charm of traveling in Norway.

Is there 5G in Norway?

Yes, there is 5G in Norway. But surprisingly in one of worlds most developed and organized countries the 5G network is not that wide spread yet as of 2023. Some tourist destinations in Norway offer 5G depending on the internet provider you have. The bigger cities all have a 5G network.

Let’s compare the  mobile network coverage maps  of the internet providers to determine the best mobile data network in Norway in 2023.

Telia 4G/5G network coverage map

telia norway 4g 5g network coverage map 2023

Telenor 4G/5G network coverage map

telenor norway 4g 5g network coverage map 2023

From the above Norway network coverage maps of Telia and Telenor we can clearly see that Telenor has the best 4G/5G network in Norway in 2023. That said in all Norway tourist destinations you will also find a Telia 4G signal. But especially if you go on a road trip in Norway I recommend buying a Telenor sim card.

Best sim card for Norway in 2023

A Telia prepaid sim card with data is a little cheaper than Telenor prepaid data plans, but Telenor has the advantage that it has a much stronger 4G/5G mobile data network and therefore Telenor is the best sim card for Norway in 2023!

All in all buying a prepaid sim card with data in Norway turns out to be pretty expensive and when comparing the Norway prepaid sim cards with the available e-sim cards for Norway that you can simply order on the internet Traveltomtom comes to the conclusion that e-sim cards for Norway are more affordable. Definitely given the fact that you don't need to swap sim cards anymore or visiting a sim card store.

Norway SIM Cards: Everything You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Dec 3, 2023 | Europe , SIM Cards , Travel Tips

Visiting Norway soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Norway SIM card .

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Norway in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

That said, if you’re traveling to other countries in Europe, you should be able to use the same SIM card because most SIM card providers also offer coverage in other European countries.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Norway. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call an Uber, or translate Norwegian – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Norway.

Note that your mobile phone provider may already offer Norway coverage if you’re European. If that’s the case, you won’t need a SIM card for your adventures in Norway.

Alesund, Norway

Best SIM Cards In Norway

If you’re traveling in Norway, we recommend using a SIM card from Telenor Norway, Telia, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Europe, you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other European countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Norway

You can buy a Europe prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport. That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind.

And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase a European prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Telenor Norway and Telia Norway.

Telenor Norway SIM Cards

Telenor offers one main prepaid plan to tourists:

  • Data is NOK 20 per day ($1.86) for unlimited data
  • Calls are NOK 0.99 / minute ($0.09)
  • SMS are NOK 0.89 / message ($0.08)

As a visitor, this could cost you approx. $26.46 based on a 14-day trip.

Telia Norway SIM Cards

Telia offers prepaid customers the Telia Cash package, which includes the following:

  • Unlimited calls & messages within Norway
  • 250 MB of Data
  • NOK 99 ($9.19)

With this package, it is possible to buy additional add-ons for data:

  • 4 GB for NOK 329 ($30.53)
  • 10 GB for NOK 429 (39.81)

How To Buy A Norway Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM Card works in more than 30 countries and gives you 20 GB of data for 14 days. Norway is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and ensure the countries you plan to visit are listed.

Browse your options on Amazon

Another option is to purchase a prepaid European SIM card on SimOptions .

They currently offer various data plans in Norway.

Browse your options on SimOptions

Finally, the last option is to buy an eSIM card for Europe.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For Norway

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone. If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s definitely one of the best options to get data in Norway.

Curious? Learn more about eSIM for travelers .

I started using eSIM as soon as my mobile phone supported it. And I first tried it when visiting my family in Canada. To buy eSIMs, I usually use Airalo . Keep reading to learn more about the best eSIMs in Norway.

Airalo Norway

If you want an eSIM for Norway, you could purchase one on Airalo . This website offers many eSIM cards worldwide and special plans for Europe and Norway.

I’ve been using Airalo in Europe for several years, and it works fine.

Here are the options available for Norway :

  • Lofotel: 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $4.50
  • Lofotel: 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $7
  • Lofotel: 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $9.50
  • Lofotel: 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $13
  • Lofotel: 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $21
  • Lofotel: 20 GB, valid for 30 days for $32

Airalo esim Norway

Here’s an overview of the options available in Europe :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $5
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $13
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $20
  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $37
  • 50 GB, valid for 90 days for $100
  • 100 GB, valid for 180 days for $185

The options mentioned above are part of Eurolink and offer coverage in 39 countries, including Norway.

Alternatively, if you’re traveling in other countries that are not mentioned on the list, you can try Discover Global, which offers coverage in 87 countries, including Norway.

Here’s an overview of the options available on Discover Global :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $9
  • 3 GB, valid for 15 days for $24
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $35
  • 10 GB, valid for 60 days for $59
  • 20 GB, valid for 180 days for $89

Now, one important thing to note about Airalo is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the provider in each country. Suppose you ever have trouble connecting to the Internet during your trip. In that case, it might be because you’re connecting automatically to networks and need to select a network manually instead.

When you purchase the eSIM, you’ll get access to the list of networks supported in each country.

Go to Airalo

Holafly Norway

Alternatively, you could look at your options on Holafly . You can read our Holafly review to learn more about this eSIM store. I’ve also tried this eSIM provider in Europe, and it worked fine. Their Europe eSIM works in 32 countries (including Norway), and they offer the following plans:

  • Unlimited data for 5 days for $19
  • Unlimited data for 7 days for $27
  • Unlimited data for 10 days for $34
  • Unlimited data for 15 days for $47
  • Unlimited data for 20 days for $54
  • Unlimited data for 30 days for $64
  • Unlimited data for 60 days for $84
  • Unlimited data for 90 days for $99

Go to Holafly

Nomad Norway

Finally, Nomad is also a great eSIM provider. Here’s an overview of the plans available for Norway:

  • 1GB, valid for 7 days for $5
  • 3GB, valid for 30 days for $10
  • 5GB, valid for 30 days for $13
  • 10GB, valid for 30 days for $24
  • 20GB, valid for 30 days for $34

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards In Norway

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Norway or even an eSIM for your travels in Norway is pretty easy. You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Europe without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase a European SIM card .

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Norway if you wish to have data upon your arrival. This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card. Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Best Tourist Sim Cards in Norway in 2024

tourist sim card norway

If you plan on visiting Norway, having a sim card is essential to stay connected and make your travels easier. With access to the internet, navigating new cities becomes a breeze. From finding the top-notch restaurants to getting directions to your accommodation, booking a taxi, and sharing memorable moments with your loved ones through photos, having internet access on the go is a necessity.

While roaming is always an option, the costs can quickly accumulate when traveling internationally. Therefore, we highly recommend either opting for an eSIM or purchasing a local sim card to benefit from local phone rates. The good news is that obtaining either of these options in Norway is incredibly simple.

However, it’s important to know which one suits you best. This comprehensive guide aims to provide you with all the information you need to buy a sim card in Norway, including up-to-date pricing and the ultimate sim card choice for you.

Table of Contents

Best sim card in norway for tourists.

The best sim card in Norway is an Airalo eSim which works out to be cheaper than purchasing a local sim card when you arrive in Norway.

By design, eSims are better and more convenient than physical sim cards which makes it an easy choice. I recommend the $13 USD (140 NOK) eSim which comes with 5GB data valid for 30 days. This is perfect for most people visiting Norway.

There are larger plans available for heavy data users and cheaper plans available for budget-travellers. You can view all the prices here:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $4.50 USD 2GB data valid for 15 days – Price: $7 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $9.50 USD 5GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $13 USD 10GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $21 USD 20GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $32 USD

Airalo’s Norway eSim uses the best network in Norway, Telenor. This is amazing as the Telenor plan costs significantly more and I couldn’t recommend it to anyone. Yet for some reason you can get access to the network, with more data, and for a lower price when you go with Airalo. I don’t understand why but it’s good news for us.

The great thing about the Airalo eSims is that you can buy the sim card online before you leave then activate it with the airport wifi when you arrive. No need to visit a store or install a physical sim card. It’s really too easy.

If you require a physical sim card, such as if your device isn’t compatible with eSims (by the way, most phones do support eSims these days, including all iPhones since 2018), then you will have to buy a local sim card.

Unfortunately, the prepaid sim cards in Norway are essentially a joke. Telenor only offers a pay as you go service at an extravagant price (20 NOK per day). ICE only offer monthly plans which require a Norwegian social security number so that’s not likely to work for you. I doubt you’d be reading this if you were Norwegian.

That just leaves Telia, which by process of elimination, offers the best physical tourist sim card in Norway at 278 NOK, or 26 USD, for 6GB data valid for 1 month. This is quite expensive and even runs on a slightly weaker network so I strongly recommend the Airalo eSim above instead.

Norway Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Norway costs 140 NOK ($13 USD) in March 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Norway will cost between $4.50 USD and $32 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Norway which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $13 USD.

Norway Sim Card Providers

In Norway, the main SIM card providers are Telia, Telenor, and ICE. Telia is one of the leading telecommunications companies, offering reliable network coverage nationwide. Telenor, another major player, is known for its extensive coverage, fast data speeds, and excellent customer service. They offer competitive prices and flexible plans, along with additional services like streaming and roaming. ICE, a smaller provider, offers affordable plans with unlimited data and flexible contracts. While not as widely known, they are gaining popularity for their commitment to a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach in their services.

Telia Tourist Sim

Telia, a renowned telecommunication company, offers tourist sim cards in Norway for seamless connectivity. Offering excellent network coverage, their sim cards are a convenient choice for travelers. How to Get a Sim Card in Norway

Identify mobile providers: Telia, Telenor and ICE are your best options in Norway.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Norway

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Norway at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Norway then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Norway have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Telia, Telenor and ICE. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Norway are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Norway with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

Norway eSim

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Norway. The Airalo Norway eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $13 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Norway without having to venture outside.

Airalo Norway

Our preferred eSim provider in Norway is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Norway and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Norway eSim uses the Telenor network to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Telenor networknetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Norway.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Norway eSim:

For most travellers we recommend the 5GB data plan for $13 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Norway

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Norway eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Norway eSim uses the Telenor Norge ASnetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Norway

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s Norway eSim:

Unlimited data valid for 5 days – Price: $19 USD Unlimited data valid for 7 days – Price: $27 USD Unlimited data valid for 10 days – Price: $34 USD Unlimited data valid for 15 days – Price: $47 USD Unlimited data valid for 20 days – Price: $54 USD Unlimited data valid for 30 days – Price: $64 USD Unlimited data valid for 60 days – Price: $84 USD Unlimited data valid for 90 days – Price: $99 USD

What is an eSim?

An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card that is built directly into a device like a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. Unlike traditional SIM cards, there is no physical card to insert or remove.

Instead of physical cards, the eSIM is integrated into the device’s hardware and can be remotely activated and programmed by a mobile network operator. This allows users to easily switch between different mobile networks or plans without the need to physically swap SIM cards.

The convenience, flexibility, and ease of use provided by eSIM technology is particularly beneficial for travelers or those who frequently switch between mobile networks or travel internationally. It eliminates the need to purchase and insert physical SIM cards, making it much more convenient to manage multiple mobile connections on a single device.

To activate an eSIM, users can either scan a QR code provided by their mobile network operator or manually enter the activation details. Once activated, the device can connect to the selected mobile network and enjoy voice, data, and messaging services just like with a traditional SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

There are several advantages to using an eSIM:

– Convenience: No need to physically insert or remove a SIM card, which is useful for frequent travelers. – Dual SIM functionality: Allows for two active mobile numbers on the same device, useful for personal and work numbers. – Space-saving: By eliminating the need for a physical SIM card slot, devices can be smaller or have more room for other components. – Remote provisioning: Activation and management of mobile plans can be done remotely, without the need for a physical SIM card or store visit. – Future-proofing: As more networks and service providers support eSIMs, using an eSIM-compatible device ensures access to new services and offerings.

Overall, eSIM technology offers flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

Esims are the perfect way to get data as soon as you land and not have to have the hassle of buying a SIM card. So, if you are looking for a small amount of data or to spend hours on Youtube, one of the Norway eSims below will be perfect.

ESIM Product Comparison

Airalo is one of the best international eSim providers because they offer the cheapest eSim data plans for Europe  and wider. Their eSim plans for Norway start at $4.5 for 1 GB of data (valid for a week), which is very affordable.

Here is the complete list:

  • 1GB, 7 days, $4.5
  • 2GB, 15 days, $7
  • 3GB, 30 days, $9.5
  • 5GB, 30 days, $13
  • 10GB, 30 days, $21
  • 20GB, 30 days, $32

The smaller prepad eSim Norway plans are great if you just want to have Internet access just to check directions on maps, emails, and some social media. If you want TikTok or Youtube, try Holafly instead.

Lofotel Airalo eSims don’t include a phone number, so you won’t be able to send/receive texts or make calls on a local number. But you can do that through WhatsApp with your original phone number.

Heading To Sweden, Finland or Denmark?

Airalo also offers regional eSim data plans as well, and they’re worth considering if you’re going to travel to other countries around Norway.

  • Affordable prices
  • Lots of packages
  • Good customer service
  • No big packages
  • No unlimited data

Holafly offers great unlimited data eSims in Norway. They are perfect if you don’t want to watch how much data you use.

They have seven unlimited data plans for Norway, but you can’t use a hotspot or tethering, so keep that in mind.

The plans they have are:

  • 5 days – $19
  • 10 days – $34
  • 20 days – $54
  • 30 days – $64
  • 60 days – $84
  • 90 days – $99

NOTE:  Use our link here for  5% discount

The cheapest Holafly plan for a Norway eSim is $19 for 5 days, and the plans go up to $99 for a three-month plan. But if you were hoping to share this data with other devices or people, you might be disappointed.

Holafly also use the best mobile network in Norway: Telenor. So, you can be sure that no matter where you travel in Norway, you will get a good connection.

The Holafly eSim doesn’t include a local phone number, so you can’t make calls or receive/send texts.

  • Unlimited data
  • Best mobile network
  • No Tethering/Hotspot

Nomad is another popular international provider that offers prepaid eSim data plans. They have pretty affordable data plans , and the best thing about them is that you can browse the Internet through the networks of multiple providers. This is great because some providers offer better coverage in the cities while others are better in the more rural areas, so you can explore the entire country and have good connectivity everywhere.

Nomad’s eSim data plans for Norway start at $5 for 1 GB of data that you can use for a week, and go up to $35 for 20 GB valid for a month. They’re only slightly more expensive than Airalo, but they offer the benefit of allowing Internet access through multiple providers, which is certainly worth the higher price point.

Also, if you at any point use up all the data included in the plan, you can easily purchase more data on their website.

  • Mostly 30 days access
  • 20 GB plans available
  • No 5G access yet
  • More expensive

Orange Holiday Europe eSim

The  Orange Holiday Europe eSim  is a good option for travelers who want a large data allowance, as well as a phone number to use in Norway. This is an all-inclusive eSim data plan, with 120 minutes for free calls to Europe and worldwide, as well as 1000 texts.

The included phone number is French, but it will work in Norway without any data roaming charges. Also, the data allowance is quite generous, and great for heavy Internet users. This eSim is valid for 14 days, and you can continue using it if you purchase additional data once the initial validity period expires.

It’s worth noting that this is an eSim plan for 30+ countries in Europe, so it’s a great option for travelers who will be visiting more than one country. Otherwise, if you don’t absolutely need a phone number in Europe, it’s not really worth the 40 Euro price tag.

  • Text & Calls included
  • 20 GB of data
  • Great combo package for travel
  • Not the cheapest per GB

Orange Holiday Zen eSim

The  Orange Holiday Zen eSim  plan is very similar to the provider’s holiday Europe plan in that it includes a French phone number, free texts and minutes, and a data allowance, and it works in 30+ European countries.

But, this is the cheaper plan that includes 8 GB of data for 20 Euros. I would recommend this data plan over the pricier one simply because the Zen plan is also valid for 14 days, and if you find that 8 GB is not enough data, you will extend the validity period of the plan by purchasing more data.

  • 8 GB of data
  • More expensive than others

O2 Go Card eSim

The  O2 Go Card eSim  is a good option if you want an eSim with a phone number. Originally meant for UK residents traveling abroad or just people who prefer prepaid plans, this eSim includes a phone number that allows you to make calls and send/receive texts throughout Europe without paying roaming fees.

I would recommend purchasing this eSim from SimOptions as opposed to directly from the provider, simply because it’s easier. The eSim retails for about $25, and it includes 10 GB of data as well as a Czech phone number. The data is valid for 30 days, so this eSim is a good option for travelers on longer trips in Norway.

  • Very affordable
  • Easy to set up
  • Includes calls
  • Not many options

AIS eSIM2Fly

AIS Sim2Fly  is a global eSim provider that offers regional eSim plans. They’re usually the best option for travelers in Asia, but they do have a good global plan that covers most worldwide countries (144). However, their global eSim card data plan makes sense only if you are going to be traveling the world and you need an eSim that works in several countries in different regions.

Their global plan is $33 for 6 GB of high-speed data, and unlimited use of 2G that’s capped at 128kbps. This plan is valid for 15 days and includes a Thai phone number, and you can easily top-up the plan if you need more data.

If your travel plans include only Norway and no other countries, this eSim is not a great option for you.

Benefits of Getting an eSim in Norway

The key benefit of having an eSim in Norway is that you can stay connected abroad. You will always have Internet access at your fingertips, and that’s very useful when you are in a foreign country. If you choose a plan with a lot of data that doesn’t limit data sharing, you can even create a hotspot so that your friends can have free Internet access everywhere as well.

One thing to note here is that an eSim is essential if you plan on traveling to the more remote regions of Norway. If you’re just going to Oslo for a few days, you can usually get by without an eSim because the capital has pretty good free WiFi coverage. The same goes for other larger cities in Norway, but an eSim will come in handy if you’re going to travel to the more rural and remote areas of the country.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSims in Norway

Telenor is a popular local mobile operator in Norway that offers eSims. However, they only offer eSims for postpaid subscribers, so the only way to get a local eSim is to purchase a recurring monthly plan. Telenor also offers prepaid physical sim cards, but from what I’ve managed to find, you need a Norweigan social security number to purchase one of these online.

Lycamobile is another great local provider in Norway, and a good option if you are fine getting a physical local sim card. They have quite a few different prepaid plans suitable for tourists, but they currently do not offer any eSims, not even to their postpaid subscribers.

Devices Compatible with eSim in Norway

All smartphones that support embedded-sim technology will be compatible with eSims in Norway. These include all iPhones from XS onward, flagship Samsung devices from Galaxy S20, second generation (and newer) Google Pixel phones, and a few other Android devices.

It’s worth noting that most Android phone manufacturers reserve eSim capability for their most expensive smartphones, so if you don’t own a flagship phone, there’s a chance that it’s not eSim compatible.

You can easily check whether your smartphone supports an eSim by dialing *#06#. This will bring up a list of unique identification for your smartphones and you need to look for an EID number. If there is an EID number, it means that your phone supports an eSim.

If there’s no EID number, you can double-check in the phone settings whether there’s an option to add an eSim, but it most likely means that your smartphone doesn’t have the embedded-sim technology.

Data Needed When Traveling to Norway

To figure out how much data you need for your trip to Norway, you should consider the length of your trip and what you want to use that data for. A few gigabytes of mobile data should be enough for trips up to a week, especially if you don’t plan to work while you’re traveling.

If you want to have Internet access to check directions on maps, emails, and social media, one of the cheaper plans should be enough for you.

On the other hand, if you want to work while you’re traveling, you will need a lot more data. Either get the unlimited data plan if you have a laptop that supports an eSim or go for one of the 10-20GB plans, so you can create a hotspot and connect your laptop to WiFi.

More extensive data plans that allow data sharing are also a good option for travelers who want to share the Internet connection with the people they are traveling with.

Sightseeing in Norway

Norway is home to fascinating landscapes and towns that you cannot miss during your trip. Here we show you some of the best places to enjoy the northern lights, fjords, and sunny beaches in Norway:

The Oslo region

Oslo is the Norwegian capital. This city is full of museums and attractions, events almost every month of the year, new neighborhoods, and much more. As forests surround the city, you can also enjoy outdoor activities such as cycling, hiking, and skiing, in the popular ski resorts. Some of the towns we suggest you visit are Fredrikstad, Tønsberg, and Hadeland, along with the regions of Østfold and Vestfold.

Tromsø and the northern lights

Are you a fan of outdoor activities? Then the capital of the Arctic should be on your bucket list. Tromsø is in Northern Norway, which makes this place one of the best to enjoy the beautiful sights of the northern lights. Some of the regions we recommend you visit are Lyngenfjord, Karasjok, and Alta, where you can experience biking and hiking in incredible landscapes. Other popular places are Varanger peninsula and Kirkenes, where most tourists enjoy the winter adventure by visiting and spending the night in the ice hotel called Tromsø Ice Domes.

Lofoten and Nordland

Without a doubt, Norway has one of the most impressive landscapes in the world. Lofoten and Vesterålen show incredible views of the northern lights, midnight sun, and glittering fjords. Besides, the villages are beautiful and authentic. Do not miss hiking in Narvik, and drive along the Coastal Route between Trøndelag and Bodø, which will be named the European Capital of Culture for the year 2024. The recommendation is to visit these places outside of the summer season, to avoid the crowds and enjoy the most of the trip.

Bergen and the western fjords

For those passionate about arts, visiting Norway’s second-largest city could be a dream come true. There you will find top museums such as KODE Art Museums and Composer Homes, which is one of the largest museums in the country. The entrance fee for adults costs $15 and students pay $10. Bergen is known as “The heart of the fjords”. The longest and deepest one is Sognefjord. Another famous one is Hardangerfjord, with the famous mountain plateau Trolltunga

Kristiansand and Southern Norway

Are you more interested in sunny weather? Then we recommend you go south to Norway. There you can enjoy beautiful beaches and islands, which experience more sun than other places in Norway. Kristiansand is the largest city in the region. There you can visit Dyreparken zoo and amusement park, fresh seafood, and attend many festivals all year round. Do not forget to visit Under, the Michelin-starred restaurant underwater, located in Lindesnes.

This measure might be applied for a period of no more than one (1) day. It’s beyond Holafly’s control, but don’t worry! If this measure affects you, the restriction will be lifted the next day, and you’ll have your original plan speed back.

Can I renew or extend the data on my eSIM?

You can’t do that with the Norway plan. If you wish to extend your plan, you can purchase a new eSIM.

If you are using an Apple device, you can use your SIM card and your eSim at the same time. Choose the Sim card for phone calls and SMS, and Holafly eSIM for data from your device. If you are travelling with another person it is important to have the ability to contact one another at any time especially in an emergency. We highly advise that you both purchase a sim so you can keep in touch.

Please note: If you use up your 100GB data allowance, the data for the apps stop working as well. If you feel you will need more than 100GB of Data then please purchase multiple sim cards accordingly

This is a Data only sim card and as such it does not come with calls and text. To see options with Calls and Texts please click  here .

However, we recommend that you use data based apps such as Whatsapp, Viber, Skype, Messenger, etc to make phone calls. You are also able to add credit to your Viber or Skype account, which will allow you to make Local and International phone calls directly to landlines and mobiles.

This sim cannot be recharged, if you are travelling for longer than 30 days, we advise that you purchase additional sim cards based on the duration of your travel and place the activation date approximately 30 days apart for each sim and swap the sim over at the end of 30 days.

For example, if you are travelling for 56 days and are departing on the 1st of September, then you should select 2 for the quantity (qty) and add them to the cart. Then in the cart page enter the activation date for the first sim as 1st September and then press the "+" to enter the activation date for second sim as 30th September. Whilst on your travel, insert the first sim card to get connected and after 30 days all you need to do is swap the sims over to remain connected throughout your trip. (Please note: each sim card will have a different phone number).

The same can be applied if you feel you need more data within a 30 days period, so please purchase multiple sims according to how much data you will need for your trip. For example, If you need 40GB data within a 30 days period then please purchase 2 sims or if you think you need 60GB data then please purchase 3.

You will receive a 3-in-1 sim card; which includes all sizes (Standard, Micro and Nano). This sim card will fit in any phone. You simply need to just pop out the sim card size that fits your phone.

Sim Card Size

Any unlocked mobile phone (mobile phone not locked to any network).

Please note: that being on a post-paid plan or contract with your local carrier doesn't mean your phone is locked. If you are unsure, please check with your current service provider.

As soon as you receive you order, you must register your travel/activation date via the following link; https://simcorner.com/pages/registersim . The sim card will automatically activate based on the Activation Date that you provide. It is from this date that your 30 days of service will commence. It can take up to 24 hours for your activation date to be registered into the system, hence, we encourage that you complete this form as soon as possible.

Should you wish to change the activation date after you have purchased, please contact us at [email protected] at   least 3 days prior to the noted activation date. Whilst using the sim card you will need to have both  MOBILE DATA and DATA ROAMING  functions  ENABLED/TURNED ON  in your phone.

Going for longer than 30 Days?

What will my phone number be?

Your phone number can be found on the back of the sim packaging. The phone number starts with 07. The sim card is a UK based sim card, hence it will have a UK phone number.

Should anyone want to call you on your phone number, they would need to drop the leading 0 and add the UK country code +44 in front of the phone number,

For example, if the phone number noted on the pack is 07307452691, they would need to dial +447307452691. (To get the + on a mobile phone, press and hold 0 until it turns into a +)

The sim does not allow you to make direct calls or send direct SMS. However, you are still able to make calls and send messages via data based apps such as Whatsapp, Viber, Snapchat, Messenger, Skype, iMessage etc.

However, you are also able to add credit to your Viber or Skype account, which will allow you to make local and international phone calls directly to landlines and mobiles.

How many days is this sim card valid for?

The features on the sim card are valid for 30 days of service from activation.

What happens if I am travelling for longer than 30 Days?

This sim cannot be recharged. If you are travelling for longer than 30 days, we advise that you purchase additional sim cards based on your duration of travel and place an activation date approximately 30 days apart for each sim and change the sim over at the end of 30 days.

As long as you are aware your 30 days will begin from the activation date you provide for each sim, it's up to you what date you provide for each sim ensuring it covers you for your duration. It's fine to have services overlap.

How do I recharge this sim card?
