Turkey Classics Tour
Brilliant tour with Fez travel. Our guide Yalcin was very knowledgeable on all aspect of Turkey and it's history. The tour was well organised with good food and mostly the accommodation was perfect. All round a very enjoyable experience in Turkey. Would definitely go back to Cappadocia! The only down side was the transport. Would have preferred a more comfortable bus, considering the amount of time spent travelling, but over all, would highly recommend this tour.
- In-depth Cultural
Absolutely Turkey
This is the best way to experience the highlights of Turkey!!! All of the stops, the time spent traveling, each stop, each historical site was all well thought out and planned! The upgrade to the Cave Hotel was the highlight! And the tour wouldn’t have been the same without Eray! He was so kind, cared about every single person and detail, and made our experience top notch!! Our driver was next level as well- so nice and always happy!! Thank you so much for the most memorable experience!!

Excellent, he done very good job .
Western Turkey Explorer - 6 Days
What does it say about a tour when you cry when it is time to say goodbye to your guide and driver? I can say with all my heart that there was not one thing that went wrong or was not to my satisfaction for the entire 7 days and 8 nights. Emre was the super perfect guide and Harkon the most courteous and careful driver. I must also make comment of the tour company, Tour Altinkum. Every time I contacted them, with perhaps a nervous silly question prior to the tour they responded within 1/2 an hour, day or night. I felt secure in their hands. I would be honoured for anyone considering doing this tour to contact me directly for a recommendation. Thank you so much to everyone involved.
- Active Adventure
Absolute Turkey
Over all tour was good, in itinerary need to mention extra cost roughly budget, also mention stay was ok, need find location which have bathrooms inside room area, it’s unsafe & uncomfortable to use bathrooms in middle of night with out getting fears

ANZAC Day Dawn Service 2024
The whole experience was incredible but at the end of the day our tour guide, Ekrem, really made it to be the best experince it could have possibly be for us all. He gave us lots of information on Turkeys history and told us many things. The other people I got to meet was also a great part and obviously being in Gallipoli for the dawn service was surreal and I will never forget this experince. Thankyou for this amazing opportunity!
2 Days Gallipoli & Troy Tour
The tour of troy was to short about 1 hour 20 minutes. I was unable to walk around the site myself to see some of the are missed and read the information sings at the site. I needed 2 more hours. This to me is a severe deficiency.

Best of Turkey by Land (5 & 4 Star Hotels)
We had an incredible experience with Travel Talk on our 12-day Best of Turkey by Land tour! TravelTalk was super responsive with our many questions and Mustafa, our tour guide, was the best tour guide we could have asked for! We were a group of 6 - traveling with 4 parents and he took care of our entire family throughout the tour. We’re also vegetarian and he made sure at every meal that we had a delicious vegetarian spread. He answered our million questions with so much patience and kindness. He was definitely one of the best tour guides we’ve had and would highly recommend Mustafa and Traveltalk for your next tour of Turkey!

Essential Turkey (5 & 4 Star Hotels)
This was a fabulous tour with a wonderful guide. Mustafa was informative and engaging and knowledgeable. It was a lovely mix of people and we could adjust the pace to suit our needs. Turkey is such a special place and has so much history, culture and flavour. The people we’d friendly and I would return in a heartbeat.
The Best of Turkey
This trip provided a very well-rounded view of Turkey. We visited so many different cities and historical sites that I wouldn't have seen on my own. Our CEO was also very well-informed and put in a lot of thought to make sure that we had the best cultural experience by taking us to delicious places to eat and setting up shows like going to see the whirling dervishes.

7 Days Magical Turkey Tour from Istanbul
Generally very good. There was however one hotel that was poor. Then at the end of the tour pick up from the airport was disorganized.
Highlights of Turkey Luxury Tour
FANTASTIC! Everything advertized and MUCH more thanks to our brilliant Tour Guide Yildiray. He was informative, very well organized re each days outing and made sure we were well taken care of. Wonderful varied selection of eating places for lunch and at each site gave us a detailed history - whether it be Archaelogical or otherwise. Definitely would consider Tour Radar for another trip
Reviews of Gallipoli Tours
A great & well-organised tour! With a special mention to our tour guide Osman and our driver Hasan. I recommend Fez Travel to anyone visiting Türkiye.
Had a great time! The tour guide, Eray, was knowledgeable and attentive, ensuring a smooth journey. Although there were several commercial stops, they added an local flavor. The hotels were of good standard, and the sights, especially in Cappadocia, were breathtaking. A well-organized and memorable trip!
We had a nice time in Turkey thank you to Fatih our guide for his passionate commentary of the Anatolian civilisations history.

Anzac Day - Gallipoli, Türkiye
On this page, introduction, planning your attendance, transport arrangements, wreath laying , important information for media, guides, apps and other information , contact information.
The Australian and New Zealand Governments jointly conduct the Anzac Day Gallipoli Dawn Service on 25 April each year at the Anzac Commemorative Site, Gallipoli, Türkiye. This service takes place with the permission and support of the host nation, the Republic of Türkiye. The commemorative sites at Gallipoli are the sovereign territory of the Turkish people and holding the annual Anzac Day commemorative services is only possible with the cooperation and generous assistance of the Turkish Government.
Over 75,000 Australians and New Zealanders served at Gallipoli between 25 April and 20 December 1915. Over 10,000 lost their lives. Many of these men were killed during the two most intense periods of fighting, in the week of the landing and in the August offensive that was launched to break the deadlock that had prevailed. Gallipoli was the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps’ introduction to war and though the campaign ended in defeat, the anniversary of its beginning quickly became, and has remained, Australia's and New Zealand’s principal day of commemoration.
Later in the war, veterans of the campaign were distinguished by a brass Anzac 'A' badge worn over their battalion colour patch. To have served at Gallipoli remained a singular honour for the rest of the survivor's lives. Some of the campaign’s most important aspects, addressing significant themes and offering a virtual tour of the key Allied battlefields, cemeteries and memorials is available on the Anzac Portal .
Register your attendance – attendance passes
All attendees and tour guides planning to attend the Anzac Day Gallipoli Dawn Service at the Anzac Commemorative Site on 25 April 2024 are required to register for an attendance pass. Entry to the service will not be permitted without an attendance pass. Register here for your attendance pass .
Tour operator coach registration – accreditation passes
Separately, all tour operators will need to register their coaches in advance for an accreditation pass through the online tour coach registration system . Each attendee over the age of two arriving on the coaches will need an individual attendance pass.
See ‘ Transport Arrangements’ below for detailed information.
Turkish and international media – accreditation passes
The Australian Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) will require all media representatives to register for official media accreditation. Two media accreditation passes are required to attend Anzac Day services:
- Anzac Day event accreditation; and
- Turkish international media accreditation.
See ‘ Important information for Media’ below for detailed information.
Overview of the Anzac Day Dawn Service at the Anzac Commemorative Site
The Gallipoli Peninsula is 5 hour drive from Istanbul. The nearest towns to the commemorative sites are Eceabat (20km), Çanakkale town centre (30km) and Gelibolu (45km), but there is no public transport available from these towns to the national park. The services take place in the Gallipoli Campaign Historical Site, a protected area in a national park, which is an isolated, remote and exposed location with no permanent infrastructure, facilities or shelter.
Most attendees travel to the commemorations as part of a guided bus tour. Numerous tour providers in Australia and Türkiye offer tours that incorporate the Anzac Day Gallipoli Dawn Service. It is recommended that attendees travel to the commemorations as part of an organised tour arriving by coach. See ‘ Transport Arrangements’ below for further information.
Attendees will be exposed to the elements in all weather conditions for the entire duration on site. The terrain includes reasonably flat sealed roads, cobblestone paths, sloped and uneven gravel tracks and grassed areas (which can become slippery or muddy when wet), as well as very steep ungraded paths. Attendees will often need to stand and queue, for long periods at times, for security screening to enter the site, as well as for the limited public amenities. If the site is nearing the safe capacity, attendees on the grassed areas will be asked to stand. Please note that while umbrellas are not permitted on site, in cases of wet weather ponchos will be available.
Very basic and limited facilities, including limited temporary seating (at Lone Pine Cemetery and Chunuk Bair), lighting and portable toilets are available on site for the period of the commemorations. Complimentary bottled water is available on site after security screening. It is recommended that attendees bring adequate supplies of non-perishable food – there are no cooking facilities on site for the period of the commemorations. Limited rubbish disposal facilities are available and, where possible, attendees are asked to take their rubbish with them. There is no running water or power on site, except for those in use for the services. Mobile phone coverage is available at the commemorative sites, but there are no recharging facilities.
Limited medical support is provided by local Turkish health authorities from the evening of 24 April to the afternoon of 25 April. Attendees should ensure they bring their own prescription medication and basic first aid supplies such as non-prescription pain relief medication and Band-Aids. The medical support provided is equipped for medical emergencies and is not designed to treat minor ailments.
There is a minimum walk of 8km at the commemorations, mostly up steep hills. Moving from the Anzac Commemorative Site to the Lone Pine Cemetery involves a walk of approximately 3.1km, including walking up the very steep Artillery Road from sea-level to the Lone Pine Cemetery on the ridge line. Artillery Road is unpaved and can be challenging (the equivalent of 30 flights of stairs or climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge). From Lone Pine Cemetery to Chunuk Bair is a further 3.3km uphill, past numerous cemeteries and historic sites, which attendees will have an opportunity to view-en-route. A moderate level of fitness is recommended .
Children and infants
Please consider how well your child or infant would cope with the travel and environmental conditions appropriate to the service you are attending. It is important to remember that there are only limited toilet facilities, with no infant changing or parenting facilities on site.
Security and safety measures for attendees
Please take note of the security measures in place for those attendees who register to attend the Anzac Day services on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 25 April 2024. Several checkpoints will be located across the Gallipoli Peninsula prior to accessing the Anzac Commemorative Site, Lone Pine Cemetery and Chunuk Bair where you will be required to produce your attendance pass as well as photographic identification, such as your passport, driver’s licence or national identity card.
Security at the site is the responsibility of the Turkish authorities, who provide considerable Military, Jandarma, Police and Medical assistance to the commemorations. Airport-style screening will also occur and any prohibited items as outlined in the Terms and Conditions will not be permitted into the site. Prohibited items include, but are not limited to, liquids (+100ml), aerosols or gels.
All prohibited items will be confiscated by officials at security screening entry points and will not be returned to you. All attendees will be wrist banded after passing through security. Please note that any suspicious behaviour or references to illegal activities will not be tolerated and you may be refused entry to the sites. The directions of the Turkish authorities and service officials must be adhered to at all times. Please note, that removal of historical artefacts and items from the Gallipoli Campaign Historical Site is strictly prohibited and carries severe penalties under Turkish law.
Traffic management is the responsibility of, and managed by, the Turkish authorities. Please follow all directions provided by them.
Traffic restrictions
Temporary traffic restrictions are likely to be in effect at various times on 24 and 25 April around the Gallipoli Peninsula, at the discretion of the Turkish authorities. These may restrict access to commemorative sites, cemeteries and other locations in the Helles and Anzac sectors.
Access to the Anzac Commemorative Site is expected to commence at TBC on 24 April and cease at 3:30 am on 25 April. We encourage attendees to be at the Anzac Commemorative Site well before the road closure to ensure you can gain access to the site.
Private vehicles
Attendees are strongly encouraged to travel to Gallipoli as part of an organised tour. Private vehicle parking is not permitted on, or near, the Anzac Commemorative Site.
Private vehicle car parking will be available only at Kilye Cove from 10:30 pm. Shuttles will be available to transport attendees from Kilye Cove to Beach Cemetery. Attendees will walk approximately 1km from Beach Cemetery to the Southern Entry of the Anzac Commemorative Site.
Tour operator coach
Attendees are strongly encouraged to arrive at the service by tour operator coach.
Tour operators must register their coach for an accreditation pass to allow the coach access to drop off and pick up patrons attending the service. Tour operators who register their coach will receive their accreditation pass, to display in the windscreen of the coach, when passing through the Tour Coach Checkpoint.
Tour operators are encouraged to register coaches for accreditation in advance using the online registration system. Registering in advance will assist in transitioning coaches through the Tour Coach Checkpoint in a timely manner. Tour operators are to register their coaches online by 10 April 2024 at Tour Coach Registration .
Tour coach registration does not replace individual registrations; an attendance pass is still required for all attendees to the service.
Accessibility arrangements
Limited assistance will be available for attendees at the commemorations who have health or accessibility requirements. Attendees with an accessibility requirement should pre-register their requirements and will need to alert staff on arrival at the Anzac Commemorative Site.
Accessible seating
Those requesting accessible seating are able to have one carer or companion with them to provide assistance. Unfortunately, due to limited accessible seating, it is not possible to extend this service to others travelling with their groups.
Accessible seating inclusions:
- Shuttle transfer from the Anzac Commemorative Site to Lone Pine Cemetery or Chunuk Bair after the Anzac Day Gallipoli Dawn Service
- Access to a limited number of dedicated accessible toilets
Accessible seating exclusions:
- Personalised or dedicated one-to-one assistance
- The provision of carers, wheelchair pushers, or physical assistance with seating or embarking and disembarking from vehicles
- Wheelchairs, walkers or mobility aids — any attendee requiring this assistance must bring their own
- Oxygen or personalised medications
- Specialised support for 'high care' individuals
- Support travelling to, or from, your accommodation
You should consult with your doctor regarding the conditions you are likely to experience on site to ensure you can safely travel to the services.
Accessibility shuttles
As part of the Gallipoli Experience, you should expect to do a lot of walking, up to 10km uphill along paved and unpaved roads. A moderate level of fitness is recommended.
A shuttle service is available for those with accessibility requirements, or who believe they are unable to walk the 10km trail between commemorative sites.
Please ensure you pre-register for this service when registering for your attendance pass. The shuttle service is limited, and those who have pre-registered will have priority on the day.
Please refer to information below regarding seating at each of the commemorative sites. Please note, large groups might be unable to sit together. You should make sure that you have your guide's details in case you are separated.
Anzac Day Gallipoli Dawn Service, Anzac Commemorative Site
The Anzac Commemorative Site is a custom designed site which provides for amphitheatre style viewing of the Anzac Day Gallipoli Dawn Service. Limited seating is provided. Attendees will be located on the grassed area and it is advisable to bring a plastic sheet or similar to protect individuals from the damp ground overnight. No folding chairs or temporary seating will be allowed to be brought in to the site. There will also be limited accessible seating for those who require it. Some areas may have restricted views, however a large screen is available to view the service.
Australian Memorial Service, Lone Pine Cemetery
There will be limited temporary seating available at the Australian Memorial Service. This will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees should locate themselves in the vacant areas and along the sides out of respect for those buried within the cemetery.
For those who registered for accessible seating at the Anzac Commemorative Site, there will be a designated accessible seating area. It is requested that attendees do not rest on the graves.
New Zealand Memorial Service, Chunuk Bair
The Chunuk Bair site is small with limited seating and standing room. It may mean that not all attendees to Chunuk Bair will be able to directly view the service. There will be an overflow site at Hill 261 for those who cannot access the official Chunuk Bair site. It is requested that attendees do not rest on the graves.
Wreath laying, by invited official representatives, will occur during the official part of the services. Please note official public wreath laying will not occur at the Anzac Day Gallipoli Dawn Service.
Members of the public who wish to lay a wreath will have the opportunity to do so at the conclusion of the official program and official wreath laying at the Lone Pine Cemetery and Chunuk Bair commemorative service sites. Individuals are to supply their own wreaths and it is their responsibility to carry, care and transport any private wreaths to the service. There are no facilities or arrangements for storage or transport of personal wreaths at the sites.
The Australian Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) will require all media representatives to register for official media accreditation. Accreditation extends across the Gallipoli Peninsula, including three commemorative sites:
- Anzac Commemorative Site
- Lone Pine Cemetery
- Chunuk Bair Memorial.
Two media accreditation passes are required to attend Anzac Day services:
The accreditation for working media on the Gallipoli Peninsula includes: journalists, presenters, reporters, camera operators, production crew, videographers, photographers, as well as individuals performing official photographer roles for VIPs.
Space at the commemorative sites is strictly limited based on the safe, secure and comfortable carrying capacities agreed with the Turkish Government. Specific accreditation caps will apply for each of the commemorative sites, based on the space available in designated media areas.
Entry to the services will not be permitted without accreditation and monitoring of media accreditation passes will be strictly enforced.
Anzac Day media accreditation
Media accreditation is required for all media personnel planning to attend the Dawn Service at the Anzac Commemorative Site.
To register for official media accreditation:
- Download, and complete the Anzac Day media accreditation form (DOCX 116 KB) .
- Email your completed form with a recent passport-style photo (JPEG. or PNG.) to: commemorations.media [at] dva.gov.au with the following subject line: “Media accreditation registration Türkiye 2024”
You should apply for event accreditation by 11.59 pm AEST 19 April 2024 .
Media accreditation passes will be available for collection in Türkiye from the DVA Media Team at a media briefing, and media representatives must sign for their accreditation (or have an agreed representative from their media organisation sign on their behalf) and produce a passport or other form of photo identification.
If a representative collects passes for other accredited members of their team, they will need to sign an agreement to provide any absent accredited personnel with the full details of the media briefing and pass holder requirements.
For media enquiries, contact commemorations.media [at] dva.gov.au

Depart Konya for Sultanhani Caravanserai, a former resting point for the caravans that once travelled the famous Silk Road. This is the largest and best-preserved caravanserai in Turkey and one of the best examples of Anatolian Seljuk architecture. Continue to Cappadocia and later in the evening take in a spectacular Whirling Dervish performance at the historical Saruhan Caravanserai.
Experience Cappadocia’s fantastical topography and long history on a full day tour of the region. Admire the preserved rock-hewn churches of Goreme, then at Pasabag Valley marvel at the unusual rock formations. Learn what life was like for early Christians in Kaymakli Underground City, a subterranean settlement that provided refuge from invaders. Take in the magnificent view from the top of the Uchisar citadel and observe potters creating masterpieces from clay sourced from the shores of the Halys River.
This morning, visit the stunning Ihlara Valley, a spectacular gorge that reaches depths of 100 metres. This geological wonder is strewn with rock-carved ancient churches and dwellings. Lunch today will be in a traditional Cappadocia village home, decorated with textiles and local flatweave carpets. Your hosts will demonstrate how to prepare and serve a variety of traditional dishes, a unique experience and wonderful opportunity to spend some time with a local family. Enjoy the authentic Turkish dishes and warm hospitality before continuing to beautiful Soganli Valley, home to early Christian churches dating from the 9th to 13th centuries.
After breakfast, travel to Turkey’s capital city, Ankara. Explore the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, renowned for its staggering collection of artefacts from every era of Turkey’s complex history. And finally, visit the colossal Mausoleum of Ataturk, resting place of the founder of modern Turkey.
After breakfast in Ankara drive to the airport and fly to Istanbul. Here transfer to the hotel for lunch and then enjoy a free afternoon in one of the world's greatest cities. For your final evening, visit the bustling and historical district of Kumkapi, on the Sea of Marmara, where fishermen have lived and worked for centuries. Enjoy your meze starters with fish or seafood main courses, often with traditional live music and belly-dance performances going on around you.
After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the airport for your return flight home.

Anzac Day Gallipoli Tours For 2025
2 day tour 2025, 4 day tour 2025.
To be part of the pilgrimage at Anzac Cove on 25 April you must join a tour group, local authorities have made it impossible to do it independently. With the increase popularity of Anzac Day at Gallipoli over the past decade there are now many options to choose from. Being at Gallipoli for the Dawn Service is a unique and once in a lifetime experience and we believe you must put your trust in an operator who really knows this remote peninsula, is professional, well organised and will ensure you get the most of time at this special place.
With our vast experience of operating to Gallipoli for Anzac Day we really know the landings area, are highly organised when it comes to the movement of our passengers at this extremely busy and special time and know how to make this occasion especially memorable and unique to our passengers.
We can boast - that without doubt - we operated the most thorough tours of the Gallipoli Peninsula. PP Travel are the only company out of the many at Gallipoli that aims to operate full tours of the entire peninsula and the battlefields of Anzac. We take you to the very point of the peninsula - Cape Helles, the British landing area, where you will see the entrance of the Dardanelles and get a thorough background of the campaign, before heading to Anzac and be escorted up the heights to see all the major sites. Don't be dumped at the cove, waiting in a queue for hours and hours, like the vast majority that attend the service. Do Gallipoli and the Dawn Service properly.
One of the major attributes of the PP/Indigo tours is that we have our own PP Travel tour guide on each tour. Our local partner Indigo is the most respected local operator in Turkey and have been operating successfully for well over two decades and we are proud to working with them again.
Events like the volcano flight crisis in 2010 demonstrate how good and dedicated Indigo are. They worked tirelessly to ensure every passenger who got to Istanbul, no matter how badly delayed, got to Anzac Cove for this once in a lifetime experience. The backup and support of superb operators like Indigo is a massive asset to a big tour like this.
With PP Travel's Anzac Day tours you get a great Price and Professionalism and you can book with confidence knowing that if the event is cancelled by officials - like in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic - you will be immediately offered a full refund.
Having an experienced PP tour leader with you all the way makes a big difference to your Anzac experience. You are not just taken from Istanbul and simply dumped at Anzac cove, like so many of the other operators do each year, no matter what they promise. We also aim to provide fully guided tours of the whole Gallipoli peninsula, including the British landings at Cape Helles, with a full historical background to the ill-fated campaign. We aim to help you understand why there are so many of our forefathers lying in this remote part of Turkey.
Our tours are not only very economical, as we do not offer expensive add-ons, like most other Anzac tour companies. E.g.: over-priced Turkish cabaret evenings, carpet shop visits and expensive cruises. No "optional extras" on our tours. Free entry into all our events and free airport transfers to our packages that include accommodation. Note: Our tour of Gallipoli is subject to road closures by the Turkish authorities.
Istanbul All Anzac tours being and end in the Turkish cultural capital. All our hotels and hostels are of a good standard and best of all are close to the Sultanahmet area - the only place to be in Istanbul. All the major sites are here - the Blue Mosque, Aya Sophia, the Grand Bazaar. Plus, it is a clean, safe area with a fantastic selection of restaurants and nightlife. Our local guides take you to many of these special sites as well as the amazing underground cistern. You also do not have to check out on the night of the 24th when we head to Anzac Cove. PP has booked these for all 3 nights, meaning you can leave your gear at our hotels while you attend the Anzac Pilgrimage. Anzac Cove and the Dawn Service At PP Travel, we believe it is vital that you are fully prepared and briefed before spending the night at Anzac Cove in readiness for the service at first light. It is an amazing (and a very cold and long) night at the specially prepared commemorative Anzac site at north beach.
The site is a sea of colour with thousands of backpackers out on the grass or in the stands wrapped in sleeping bags and flags. War veterans, the military, and media mix with the young travellers in this unique and peaceful environment. You will be entertained by the guest speakers, folk songs, service bands and stories shown on the big screens either side of the stands.
Our PP reps will be at the cove through the night and then at the Australian memorial service at Lone Pine and the New Zealand service at Chunuk Bair. You will not be hoarded together like sheep or told what you must do. We believe the Anzac Cove experience on the night of the 24th and at dawn on April 25 is a unique personal thing. However, you will fully be briefed on this unique night and morning.
At PP we are truly passionate about Anzac and we'll do everything we can to assist you get the most out of what should be an unforgettable experience.

The Aegean (western) and Mediterranean (southern) coasts have a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm summers, so beach resorts are highly popular from May to August.
March, April, September and October tend to remain moderate along the coast with many local tourists enjoying the sea and pleasant weather. During these months, inland Anatolia (i.e. Cappadocia, Ankara) is typically cooler and drier. Winter season in Turkey (December – February) can be cold, rainy and snowy, with occasional sunny days.
Most Turkish cities and resorts carry on as normal during Ramadan. After sunset, slow-paced Istanbul gets back into full swing with a carnival-like atmosphere. Festive coloured lights are switched on and mosques are illuminated. Restaurants will be packed with locals to break their fast. Most restaurants offer special Ramazan menus or banquets. Tourists and non-Muslims are welcome to join the festivities. Please check the Pre-departure file or the FAQ for Ramadan dates.

Sultanahmet Imperial Mosque: The mosque, built between 1609 and 1616, is popularly known as the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior. With its six minarets and a great cascade of domes, the mosque is a worthy sibling to Ayasofya (Hagia Sophia). Pope Benedict XVI visited the Sultan Ahmed Mosque on 30th November 2006 during his visit to Turkey. It marks only the second papal visit in history to a Muslim place of worship.
Hippodrome: Today the area is officially called Sultan Ahmet Square, and is carefully maintained by the Turkish authorities. The course of the old racetrack has been indicated with paving, although the actual track is some 2m below the present surface. The surviving monuments of the Spina, the two obelisks and the Serpentine Column, now sit in holes in a landscaped garden. The German Fountain, an octagonal domed fountain in neo-Byzantine style, which was constructed by the German government in 1900 to mark the German Emperor Wilhelm II’s visit to Istanbul in 1898, is located at the northern entrance to the Hippodrome area, right in front of the Blue Mosque.
Spice Bazaar: The Spice Bazaar, or Egyptian Bazaar is one of the oldest bazaars in the city. Located in Eminonu, it is the second largest covered shopping complex after the Grand Bazaar. The air here is filled with the enticing aromas of cinnamon, caraway, saffron, mint, thyme and every other conceivable herb and spice. After your Istanbul city tour there is an option to experience a Bosphorus boat cruise, enjoy the magnificent views of the Bosphorus which connects Asia to Europe, the best way of seeing the Bosphorus in all its beauty. With the shores rising to heights up to 200m, lined with palaces, ruins, villages, and gardens, this is one of the most beautiful stretches of scenery in Turkey.

Experience the Anzac Day Dawn Service at Gallipoli
Anzac day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by australian and new zealand forces during the first world war. although this military campaign at gallipoli failed in its objectives, the actions of the australian and new zealand troops left us all a powerful legacy. gallipoli is seen to many as the birth place of what has become known as the "anzac legend" and the identity of both nations. in 1916 the date, 25th april was officially named anzac day..
Many thousands of people now make their way each year to the Gallipoli Peninsular for the Anzac Day Dawn Service to pay their respects to those that gave so much. It is a very special and moving experience. Most people will make their way to the Gallipoli Peninsular for the Anzac Day commemorations as part of a tour group. Tour companies today offer the easiest, best and most comprehensive way of getting the most out of your visit to Gallipoli.
Anzac Day Commemorations 2024
Important attendance pass registration, anzac day gallipoli tours 2024, anzac day gallipoli tours 2025, 100% aussie/kiwi owned and operated, history of anzac day, anzac day - 25 april - is probably one of the most important national occasion for australia and new zealand but why this day special to australians and new zealanders.
When war broke out in 1914 Australia had been a federal commonwealth for only 14 years. The new national government was eager to establish its reputation among the nations of the world. In 1915 Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula to open the way to the Black Sea for the allied navies. The plan was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul), the capital of the Ottoman Empire and an ally of Germany. They landed at Gallipoli on 25 April, meeting fierce resistance from the Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold stroke to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915 the allied forces were evacuated after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers were killed. News of the landing at Gallipoli made a profound impact on Australians at home and 25 April quickly became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice of those who had died in war.
Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives of capturing Constantinople and knocking Turkey out of the war, the Australian and New Zealand actions during the campaign bequeathed an intangible but powerful legacy. The creation of what became known as the "ANZAC legend" became an important part of the national identity of both nations. This shaped the ways they viewed both their past and future.
Early commemorations
The date, 25 April, was officially named ANZAC Day in 1916 and was marked by a wide variety of ceremonies and services in Australia, a march through London, and a sports day in the Australian camp in Egypt. In London over 2,000 Australian and New Zealand troops marched through the streets. A London newspaper headline dubbed them "The knights of Gallipoli". Marches were held all over Australia in 1916. Wounded soldiers from Gallipoli attended the Sydney march in convoys of cars, attended by nurses. For the remaining years of the war, ANZAC Day was used as an occasion for patriotic rallies and recruiting campaigns, and parades of serving members of the AIF were held in most cities.
The Dawn Service
The Dawn Service observed on ANZAC Day has its origins in an operational routine which is still observed by the Australian Army today. During battle, the half-light of dawn was one of the most favoured times for an attack. Soldiers in defensive positions were, therefore, woken up in the dark, before dawn, so by the time first light crept across the battlefield they were awake, alert, and manning their weapons. This was, and still is, known as "stand-to". It was also repeated at sunset.
After the First World War, returned soldiers sought the comradeship they felt in those quiet, peaceful moments before dawn. With symbolic links to the dawn landing at Gallipoli, a dawn stand-to or ceremony became a common form of ANZAC Day remembrance during the 1920s; the first official dawn service was held at the Sydney Cenotaph in 1927. Dawn services were originally very simple and followed the operational ritual. In many cases they were restricted to veterans only and the daytime ceremony was for families and other well-wishers. Before dawn the gathered veterans would be ordered to "stand to" and two minutes' silence would follow. At the end of this time a lone bugler would play the Last Post and then concluded the service with Reveille.
At Gallipoli
On Anzac Day in 1985, the name "Anzac Cove" was officially recognised by the Turkish government. Back then the Anzac Day services were very small affairs and held at the Ari Burnu Cemetery within the cove. From the mid 1990s the number of mainly young backpackers who made the annual pilgrimage grew and grew until 1999 when the number of people attending forced authorities to make another site. A purpose built "Anzac Commemorative Site" was constructed nearby on North Beach in time for the 2000 service.
Over the years, ANZAC Cove beach has been degraded by erosion, and the construction of the coast road from Gaba Tepe to Suvla, originally started by Australian engineers just prior to the evacuation of ANZAC in December 1915, resulted in the beach being further reduced and bounded by a steep earth embankment.
In 2003 the Australian government announced that it was negotiating with Turkey to place Anzac Cove on the National Heritage List, which included Australian sites such as the Eureka Stockade gardens. However this request was dismissed by the Turkish government as the Gallipoli peninsula itself is Turkish territory and already a national park in the Turkish National Park System.

Tour Introduction
During this wonderful tour to Turkey we will visit and examine the main aspects of the Gallipoli campaign: the naval assault, the problems of landing against defended beaches at Cape Helles, the command, control and communication issues, the miracle that was ANZAC, the Turkish perspective, the conditions at Gallipoli, the Suvla Bay fiasco and discuss whether it was all worthwhile. All this is set against the exotic backdrop of Turkish history, culture, scenic beauty and cuisine - all of which we will have ample opportunity to explore. We will also soak up the culture with visits to the ruins of legendary Troy and a full day exploring the beguiling and bustling city of Istanbul, the crossroads of Europe and Asia.
Gallipoli was the scene of one of the great Allied failures of the First World War. In attempting to take Turkey out of the war, the assault on the Dardanelles ended in disastrous failure following a campaign that lasted from April 1915 to January 1916. The campaign saw some thirteen British and Empire divisions involved in a struggle against twenty Turkish divisions, with a total cost of 500,000 casualties.

Fly London to Istanbul or join the tour in Istanbul. Transfer to central Istanbul hotel. Pre-dinner drinks and introductory talk. (D)
Day 2: Sultanahmet
Explore the imperial quarter of Istanbul including the extraordinary Haghia Sophia, the imperial Topkapi Palace, the graceful Blue Mosque and the enchanting Grand Bazaar. This evening we enjoy dinner overlooking the Bosphorus. (B,L,D)
Day 3: Canakkale
This morning we visit Istanbul Military Museum with over 50 rooms of collections, those of particular interest being on Gallipoli and Ataturk. This afternoon we drive to Canakkale where we check-in to our hotel for the remainder of the tour. (B,L,D)
Day 4: Naval and Amphibious Operations
This morning, following a detailed examination of the Turkish coastal defences from Kilitbahir to the hugely impressive national Turkish memorial, we visit the French-held sector before moving onto the 25th April landing points – S, V, W, X and Y Beaches; each with its own poignant story, including the ill-fated SS Clyde landings at V Beach, and the “six VCs before breakfast” won at W beach by the Lancashire Fusiliers. We’ll also spend some quiet time at the Helles Memorial for the Missing. (B,L,D)
Day 5: Helles Peninsula
We will walk a section of Gully Ravine, perhaps the most atmospheric yet least visited part of the battlefield. Our day will also see us studying the battles around the ‘Vineyard’. We’ll shift our focus to the Turkish perspective visiting some amazing memorials and the small village of Bigali where we find a museum dedicated to Ataturk. This afternoon we visit to the extraordinary naval museum and the Turkish gun positions at Ephez. (B,L,D)
Day 6: ANZAC
Today’s highlights include the museum at Gaba Tepe and Anzac Cove, a climb up to Plugge’s Plateau, scene of fierce fighting, with its overview of ANZAC Cove and key features such as Razor Back, Shrapnel Valley and Lone Pine Ridge, where seven VCs were won. We also tour one of the many front-line ANZAC positions, such as Johnstone’s Jolly and Quinn’s Post. We visit the important sites of the August offensive such Sari Bair, Walker’s Ridge, the Gurkhas battle for Hill ‘Q’ and end our day at the Nek, the site of the ill-fated attack of the Australian Light Horse, immortalised in the film ‘Gallipoli’. This evening dinner you are free to find the restaurant of your choice but at your own expense. (B,L)
Day 7: Suvla Bay
Drive to beautiful Suvla Bay and examine the landings of August 6th 1915 at Nibrunesi Point and the baptism of fire for the Kitchener battalions such as the 6th Green Howards and the King’s Sandringham Company. Depending on weather conditions, we will take a short but telling walk to Lala Baba, or along a stretch of Kiretch Tepe; follow the failed attempt to break out at Hill 10, Chocolate Hill and Green Hill and the subsequent struggle for Scimitar Hill and Hill 60. We’ll also visit a small private museum at the village of Büyükanafarta. Finally we shall examine one of the most successful phases of the operation, the evacuation at Suvla Bay. Return to hotel and a final farewell dinner on the harbour-side. (B,L,D)
Day 8: Kumkale and Troy
From Kumkale, weather permitting, we will obtain great views over the Dardenelles towards Cape Helles and discuss the naval operations. But most of our day is spent exploring the layered archaeological remains of Troy and its fabulous museum which reveal over 1000 years of continuous habitation. (B,L,D)
Day 9: Home
Drive to Istanbul to catch our flight to London. (B) Gallery Category If a new tour a gallery of pictures needs to be created. These images should be of past experiences of the tour. They will scroll along the bottom of the tour page (optional)

Travis Kelce has detailed his whirlwind trip to Australia to visit his girlfriend, Taylor Swift, during her global sold-out Eras Tour.
The three-time Super Bowl champ, 34, revealed that even though he visited Sydney for just 24 hours, his trip Down Under “did not disappoint.”
“It was amazing over there,” the Kansas City Chiefs tight end said on Wednesday’s “New Heights” podcast episode . “I only went to Sydney — got a lot of friends that I’ve met over the years in Melbourne, definitely want to get out there and see what Melbourne has to offer.”
“Sydney was a beautiful city,” Kelce shared, before detailing his romantic — and very exclusive — trip to the Sydney Zoo with the 14-time Grammy winner.
“It was cool to see all the exotic animals,” the NFL star told newly-retired Jason Kelce. “It was fun, man. There were full-on helicopters just just flying around. This is all because Taylor is the biggest and the best thing possible.”
The duo took in the Australian wildlife during a private tour of the park and even hand-fed some of the kangaroos and met koalas during their wholesome day out.
“Tell you what though, the kangaroos are pretty sweet and I got to see a red panda up close and personal,” Kelce shared.
He spent that evening watching his famous girlfriend rock out on stage at Sydney’s 82,000-seat Accor Stadium.
“And then we got to enjoy the Taylor Swift show,” Kelce said on the podcast. “Australians are pretty rowdy, they like to have a good time. I like to have a good time.”
“They were just a little bit louder than the Argentina crowd. And I was not expecting that. Taylor’s very fond of performing in Australia,” he said.
At the concert, Kelce was seen waving and high-fiving excited Swifties while walking through the crowd to get to his VIP tent.
He was later seen singing along to Swift’s songs alongside Katy Perry and Rita Ora, who were also watching the show from the VIP tent.
Kelce was seen hopping on a flight back to home soil the following morning before heading to Las Vegas to celebrate the Chiefs’ second-straight Super Bowl win.
The All-Pro tight end then was in attendance — and in tears — during brother Jason’s retirement announcement Monday in Philadelphia.
Swift, for her part, is currently in Singapore and is set to wrap up her shows on March 9 before resuming her global sold-out tour in Paris on May 9.

Andrew Laming loses court challenge over watchdog’s travel expenses decision
Attempt by ex-Liberal MP for parliamentary expenses authority’s decision over his travel claims to be reviewed thrown out by federal court
- Get our morning and afternoon news emails , free app or daily news podcast
A court challenge by former federal Liberal MP Andrew Laming against parliament’s expenditure watchdog over travel expenses has been dismissed.
Laming, who is running for mayor of Redland city council in Queensland’s local government elections this month, took the Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority to the federal court over its conclusions about his travel.
He was asked to pay back $10,360, which includes a 25% loading fee, after the authority audited expenses he claimed for his wife, two children and himself.
The review found Laming’s dominant purpose of travel from Brisbane to Hobart on 21 June 2019 and return flights between Brisbane and Melbourne in the same month was not parliamentary business.
“Dr Laming … contended that he was denied procedural fairness because certain matters were omitted from the audit, that the audit process was haphazard, and that the conclusion that his travel and expenses were not for the dominant purpose of parliamentary business was legally unreasonable,” Justice Sarah Derrington said in a judgment published on Monday.

She said Laming was told on 1 April 2021 about an assurance review regarding commonwealth-funded travel and travel-related expenses between Brisbane, Hobart and Melbourne in June 2019 and asked to respond to questions.
He requested an extension, saying “nearly a year of email correspondence is not available in my archive”, with the reason for the loss of data remaining unexplained.
“It seems to be accepted between the parties that Dr Laming has lost access to his entire record of sent correspondence from March 2019 to January 2020 on his parliamentary email account,” Derrington said.
Laming claimed the expenses for travel to Tasmania were for a medical conference.
The authority started proceedings in the magistrates court to recover the money, with Dr Laming agreeing in July 2023 to pay $20,935.25 and paying $5,000 towards that about a month later.
“In my view, the taking of this course of action by Dr Laming is indicative of a decision by him to abandon any course that would seek to challenge the ruling by applying for judicial review,” Derrington said.
after newsletter promotion
Laming’s application for the judicial review of the authority’s March 2022 decision in August 2023 was more than 15 months later than the 28 days allowed.
Derrington ruled against the Laming’s application for an extension of the time to call for the review.
The judge also found his complaint boiled down to one about the weight of evidence and the authority’s conclusion as to the dominant purpose.
“The prospects of Dr Laming establishing that the ruling has not been made within the proper exercise of the power are poor,” Derrington said in her judgment.
Laming was the MP for the south-east Queensland seat of Bowman.
He was fined by the federal court in 2023 over social media posts he published in the lead-up to the 2019 federal election and has appealed against that decision.

On Anzac Day 1918 Australian soldiers captured the French town of Villers-Bretonneux, an action that was called ‘one of the finest feats of the war’. This is your chance to commemorate the anniversary of this outstanding attack, alongside fellow Australians, on the ground where the fighting took place. This tour visits the key Australian battlefield sites on the Western Front, Paris and Bruges – the highlight being the Dawn Service on Anzac Day.
Day 1 > Thursday, 18 April 2024 | Arrive Paris
Welcome to our Western Front tour! After checking in to our Paris hotel, we will come together this evening to enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel. This is an excellent opportunity to get to know our fellow passengers and Historian. (D)
STAR INCLUSIONS ★ Welcome dinner in Paris
Day 2 > Friday, 19 April 2024 | Paris to Ypres
Our tour in the footsteps of the Anzacs begins today. After breakfast we depart Paris for Ypres in Belgium, one of the most significant towns on the Western Front and our home for the next four nights. On route we will travel through the Somme region and visit Villers-Bretonneux, the centre of Australian commemoration on the Western Front. Our first stop will be the Australian National Memorial, which features the names of nearly 11,000 Australians missing from fighting in France. We will have time to pay our respects at the memorial and the adjacent cemetery, before visiting the Sir John Monash Centre, the brand new audio-visual museum that tells the story of Australian courage and sacrifice on the Western Front on hundreds of interactive screens. We will then continue to Ypres to check into our hotel and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant walking distance to our hotel. (B, D)
STAR INCLUSIONS ★ Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux ★ Sir John Monash Centre
Day 3 > Saturday, 20 April 2024 | Ypres
Between 1914 and 1918 the town of Ypres was the centre of four great battles, and was completely destroyed by shellfire. Today the rebuilt town is one of the iconic places on the Western Front. This morning we will take a walking tour around the town, visiting key sights from the war such as the magnificent Cloth Hall, St George’s Chapel, St Martin’s Cathedral, the Menin Gate and Ramparts Cemetery. We will end the walking tour at the In Flanders Field Museum where we will have free time to wander at our leisure. This evening we will return to the Menin Gate, where the names of 54,000 missing British and Commonwealth soldiers are recorded, for the moving Last Post ceremony. The Ypres fire brigade has performed this bugle ceremony every day and in all weather since the memorial opened in 1927. The only interruption was during the four years of German occupation during the Second World War – the ceremony recommenced on the day the town was liberated. Two of our passengers will be invited to lay a wreath on behalf of the group. (B)
STAR INCLUSIONS ★ Walking tour of Ypres ★ In Flanders Fields Museum ★ Participation in the Last Post service at the Menin Gate
Day 4 > Sunday, 21 April 2024 | Ypres Salient
The Ypres Salient was a bulge in the front line that curved around Ypres for most of the war. More than a million men were killed or wounded trying to gain control of this small patch of ground. Today we will explore the Australian battlefields in the Salient, places where the Anzacs made history in 1917. Our first stop will be the Passchendaele Museum, which features a recreated British dugout. We will then visit the 5th Australian Division Memorial at Polygon Wood and see the graves of Private Hunter and Sergeant Calder, the two Australian soldiers who featured in Mat McLachlan’s documentary ‘Lost in Flanders’. Lunch is included at Cafe de Dreve, where the owner, Johan Vandewalle, will tell us about his discovery of the bodies of Private Hunter and Sergeant Calder in a Belgian field. We then get a taste of the devastation caused by four years of continuous artillery fire at the cratered landscape of Hill 60, before visiting Tyne Cot, the world’s largest Commonwealth war cemetery. Tyne Cot sits in the heart of one of the most horrific battlefields of the war – Passchendaele. Our final stop today is at the German Cemetery at Langemarck, where we will learn about the men on the other side of the line. As we drive back to our hotel we will see the magnificent Canadian memorial at Langemarck, marking the spot where poison gas was first used in the war. (B, L)
STAR INCLUSIONS ★ Full day touring the battlefields of the Ypres Salient ★ Passchendaele 1917 Museum ★ Presentation by Johan Vandewalle
Day 5 > Monday, 22 April 2024 | Bruges
Today we will spend time exploring Bruges, one of Europe’s most charming medieval cities. Wander the cobbled streets, take a cruise on one of the city’s enchanting canals, ride through the picturesque squares in a horse and cart or sample the lace boutiques, chocolate shops and cafes that make Bruges famous. On the drive back to Ypres we will stop at Essex Farm Cemetery, where in 1915 Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae composed ‘In Flanders Fields’, the most famous poem of the war. (B)
STAR INCLUSIONS ★ Bruges ★ Essex Farm Cemetery
Day 6 > Tuesday, 23 April 2024 | Ypres to the Somme
Today we leave Ypres and travel south to the battlefields of the Somme. Our first stop is the battlefield of Messines, scene of a huge Allied attack in 1917 that was heralded by the explosion of 19 massive mines. We will then travel to French Flanders, and the very moving 1916 battlefield of Fromelles, where Australia lost 5533 men during its first action on the Western Front. While here, we will visit the Australian Memorial Park, VC Corner Cemetery (the only all-Australian cemetery in France), the site of the recently discovered Australian mass grave at Pheasant Wood and the new Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Cemetery, where 250 Australian and British soldiers were laid to rest in 2010. Our final stop of the day is the battlefield of Bullecourt, where Australia lost 10,000 men in two great battles in 1917. We will pay our respects to them at the Slouch Hat memorial in the centre of town and the Australian Memorial Park on the site of the German front line. A packed lunch is included today. (B, L)
STAR INCLUSIONS ★ Touring of the battlefields between Ypres and the Somme including Fromelles and Bullecourt
Day 7 > Wednesday, 24 April 2024 | The Somme
This morning we will spend some time in the town of Villers Bretonneux and visit the Franco-Australian Museum and neighbouring remarkable Victoria School where we will see the sign that entreats the children of Villers-Bretonneux to ‘Never Forget Australia’. We will also visit Adelaide Cemetery, the place where Australia’s Unknown Soldier lay for 75 years before being returned to Australia in 1993. We will enjoy lunch at the town of Naours before visiting the underground tunnels where many Australian soldiers left their mark with graffiti. Their names have become a self-made memorial at a site that has been a tourist attraction since the 1800s. Our final stop for the day will be Vignacourt, a city that remained behind the lines during WW1 and was therefore a place of refuge for Australian soldiers on a break from the front line. We will visit Vignacourt 14-18, a new photographic museum located in the old Thuillier family farmhouse. We will enjoy dinner at our hotel before the much anticipated Anzac Day Dawn Service. (B, L, D)
STAR INCLUSIONS ★ Franco-Australian Museum ★ Victoria School ★ Vignacourt 14-18 museum
Day 8 > Thursday, 25 April 2024 | Anzac Day
An Anzac Day we will never forget! We have an early start this morning in order to make our way to the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux. We will gather here with thousands of other Australians to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the battle of Villers-Bretonneux as we pay our respects to our 45,000 countrymen who were killed during fighting on the Western Front. As the sun rises over the imposing memorial to Australia’s 11,000 missing in France, the strains of the Last Post will echo across the countryside, peaceful now, but the scene of a monumental Australian victory on Anzac Day 1918. After this moving ceremony we will enjoy a piece of Australia in the heart of the Somme – breakfast with the townspeople of Hamel. This town was liberated by Australian troops in July 1918, and we will be made very welcome by the local people. Following breakfast we will conduct a memorial service at the Australian Memorial Park near the town. This very special breakfast event is being conducted exclusively for Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours, and is a wonderful highlight of the tour. Later in the morning we will begin our tour of the 1916 battlefields of the Somme. Our first stop will be the imposing Lochnagar Mine Crater, which was detonated beneath the German lines on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Even though erosion has reduced the size of the crater it is still enormous – more than 100 meters across and 30 meters deep. We will then visit the village of Pozieres, scene of the most costly battle in Australia’s history. 23,000 men were killed or wounded in six weeks’ fighting, and we will visit the scenes of their heroic sacrifice at the 1st Division Memorial and the Windmill. We will also have time to walk the battlefield with our historian, gaining a better understanding of the fighting that led to more Australian casualties than any other battle in our history. We will then return to our hotel where our evening is free. (B, L)
STAR INCLUSIONS ★ Anzac Day Service at Villers-Bretonneux ★ Hamel Breakfast with the local village ★ Lochnagar Mine Crater
Day 9 > Friday, 26 April 2024 | The Somme to Paris
Our last day in the footsteps of the Anzacs will see us return to the 1916 Somme battlefields, where we will visit the maze of trenches at the Newfoundland Memorial Park. The Newfoundland Regiment was almost wiped out here on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. We will then drive past the Ulster Tower, modelled on Helen’s Tower in Northern Ireland, before visiting the spectacular Thiepval Memorial, where the names of more than 72,000 British men missing from the Somme fighting are recorded. We will also see Mouquet Farm, scene of a costly advance by Australian troops in August 1916. We will then visit the battlefield at Mont St Quentin, where Australian troops won a great victory in August and September 1918, and pay our respects to them at the Australian 2nd Division Memorial. We then farewell the battlefields and return to Paris. This evening we will enjoy a farewell dinner cruising along the Seine River, a wonderful opportunity to see the landmarks of Paris bathed in light. (B, D)

As I go through my photographs of the 3 weeks we spent in Europe, it is these 2 days that I keep coming back to and would class as the highlight of the trip. The information provided was first class, the effort to locate some of our ancestors who did not make it home was very much appreciated and the whole experience was extremely moving.

Taylor Swift's father allegedly punched photographer in face after Australian leg of her Eras Tour ended
Updated on: February 27, 2024 / 12:22 PM EST / CBS/AP
Melbourne, Australia — A photographer told police he was punched in the face by Taylor Swift's father on the Sydney waterfront on Tuesday, hours after the pop star's Australian tour ended.
Ben McDonald said he provided police with a statement alleging that Scott Swift assaulted him at the Neutral Bay Wharf, where the father and daughter had just come ashore from a yacht.
However, a spokesperson for Taylor Swift told CBS News that at the time of the incident, "two individuals were aggressively pushing their way towards Taylor, grabbing at her security personnel, and threatening to throw a female staff member into the water."
Agence France-Presse reports that McDonald said he'd been taking pictures of the pop superstar and her entourage on a luxury superyacht in Sydney Harbor during an apparent late-night celebration after the Australian leg of her Eras Tour concluded.
The veteran paparazzo said he decided to report the attack to police despite not being seriously injured.
"It was just a punch in the chops. It's a little tender, but I don't have any bruising and it didn't require medical assistance," McDonald said.
"In 23 years, I haven't been assaulted and punched in the chops, particularly by the talent's dad," he added.
The New South Wales Police Force media office confirmed that police were investigating the alleged assault of a 51-year-old man by a 71-year-old man at 2:30 a.m. Police did not release names, in accordance with their policy for such allegations.
But AFP says that in addition to McDonald, a law enforcement source identified the man who was accused as Scott Swift.
AFP cites Australian police as saying Scott Swift "has left the country" but that inquiries were continuing.
Taylor Swift left Australia on a private jet Tuesday, after more than 600,000 fans saw that leg of her tour at seven stadium concerts. Singapore is the next stop. AFP says more than 300,000 fans gobbled up tickets to her six sold-out dates at the National Stadium.
McDonald said media had been waiting to photograph the star as she walked with her entourage from a jetty to two waiting cars.
"There were about four or five security there and at one point, one of the American security started shoving his umbrella into me and my camera and then Taylor got in her car," McDonald told the AP.
"Someone else came running at me and punched me in the left side of my face. Initially, I thought it was an Australian security that was trying to be the hero of the moment in the front of the Americans, but as it turned out it was her father," McDonald added.
McDonald said he realized that his alleged assailant wasn't a part of the security detail after seeing a photo of him holding Swift's hand while reviewing photos from the evening. McDonald later identified Scott Swift from an online picture.
McDonald said there had been no cause for violence.
"We didn't go rushing down the jetty. We didn't go rushing to the back of the boat. We waited for her to come up. Kept it very civil," he said.
"But no, they had to be (expletives) and put the umbrellas up and umbrellas over her and then shove the umbrellas into our faces and then make out that we're the ones making contact with them," he added.
Taylor Swift's fans hurried to defend her father in social media posts, according to AFP. "Free Scott Swift," posted one such user, @Soyytv.
AFP says "Papa Swift," as he's come to be known, has become a fan favorite, "handing out sandwiches, fruit, guitar picks and VIP passes to young members of his daughter's audiences."
After a career as a financial adviser, Scott Swift regularly attends Taylor Swift's concerts and public appearances.
