The Most Budget-Friendly Time Of Year To Visit The Dominican Republic

Aerial view of beach in Dominican Republic

If you're traveling to the Dominican Republic on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, it's only logical to ask: when's the best time to visit, in terms of budget and the weather? According to Visit Dominican Republic , the dry season falls between December and April, while May to November sees wetter climates. That's likely why Dominican Abroad advises budget-minded travelers to visit the country from the middle of January through the month of March, during the driest time of year. However, the outlet also cautions against certain dates in February, when different cities host carnival celebrations.

Though the wet season also offers budget-friendly visits to the Dominican Republic, it's probably best for travelers to avoid that time of year due to hurricane season. The U.S. Embassy reports that, like the rest of the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is prone to hurricanes beginning in June, with storms most likely to hit the area from the middle of August to the end of October.

Visit in the springtime

The period between the middle of January through March isn't the only good time of year to visit the Dominican Republic. April is also a good month in which to visit the country as well, as are May and November. You're still going to get favorable weather with all the perks that come with fewer tourists — namely, cheaper flights, hotels, tours, and the like. Indeed, TripSavvy suggests that April and May are actually the best times to visit the Dominican Republic. Yes, May still falls within the wet season, and November can still get hurricanes, reports The Top Villas , but there's a lot less rain than in the summer months, humidity is lower, and it's less likely that you'll face off against any hurricanes or tropical storms. Still, the best time of year to visit the Dominican Republic on a budget is sometime in the spring, especially in March.

Punta Cana and Puerto Plata

A popular destination in the Dominican Republic is Punta Cana on the easternmost tip of the country. Everything Punta Cana says the best time to visit is March to May, when you'll likely have more elbow room without jostling for space to travel around the area.

In Puerto Plata, located on the north side of the country, the low season is from May to June and September to December, according to the Senator Puerto Plata Spa Resort . That means if you're doing a whole trip around the country, maybe May will be the perfect month for the budget-minded traveler.

No matter when you decide to visit, be sure to do your research. While March to May might offer some of the best and most budget-friendly traveling in the Dominican Republic, Easter also falls within those months, and Semana Santa (aka the Holy Week) is the most significant holiday in the country, per  Extreme Hotels . Then again, it's a perfect time to get to know the locals and take part in the celebrations.

  • If you've rented a car and find yourself lost outside of the city, locals are usually quick to help. Flag down a motorbike driver and they will likely point the way for you, if not offer you a guided drive back.
  • If you take a taxi, make sure you only ride with a licensed driver. Licensed drivers where licenses around their necks and are often dressed in uniforms. Their vehicles are generally clean and reliable. Negotiate on a price before you get in the vehicle.

  • There's a long outdoor mall in the Colonial Center that is a great place for shopping. There are many vendors that sell everything from street food to knockoff clothing or local knickknacks which you can purchase for cheap prices.
  • You'll find many different types of accommodation in the Dominican Republic, but all-inclusive resorts are some of the most popular. This is the easiest, and often most luxurious way to experience the island in a hassle free setting.

The best time to visit the Dominican Republic for a Caribbean adventure

Consistently warm weather, balmy waters and year-round adventures make the Dominican Republic an enticing destination no matter what the season. Whether your idea of a vacation involves maneuvering an ATV through hilly jungles, watching whales off the coast, hiking to cascading waterfalls or simply soaking up the sun in blissful peace at a luxe resort, this Caribbean island won’t disappoint.

As with other  Caribbean locales, the winter high season sees crowds on the beaches and peak prices. The summertime off-season brings a blistering brand of heat, along with occasional midday thunderstorms that dissipate as quickly as they arrive. However, this is one of the best times to score a deal on your travel package, as prices fall in line with falling visitor numbers.

Whenever you come, there'll be something happening on the cultural calendar. Here's our guide to the best times to visit the Dominican Republic.

The high season brings perfect weather and huge crowds (December–April)

Sun-kissed days and low rainfall make the period from December through to April the prime time to visit the Dominican Republic. Daytime temperatures tend to hover between a refreshing 70ºF (21ºC) in the morning and evening and a warming 82ºF (28ºC) in the heat of the day, although you’ll find it’s a bit cooler in the mountainous interior of the island.

The summertime rain – and humidity, its stifling partner-in-crime – are practically non-existent during the winter months, making this the perfect weather for both beaches and inland exploring. The country also hosts lots of festivals during this period, making this a great time to mingle with the locals and dive into the island’s culture.

The only problem is that everyone else will have come to the same conclusion, making everywhere very crowded at this time of year. Expect packed venues and higher prices for accommodations and excursions — especially around the Christmas holiday and spring break peaks.

Head outdoors for fun in the shoulder season (May)

Couched between the idyllic weather of high season and the bargain prices of low season, May brings the best of both worlds. Thanks to sunny skies, warm water temperatures and low rainfall, you can escape the peak season crowds and take full advantage of the Dominican Republic’s myriad outdoor activities — from snorkeling and kiteboarding to hiking and horseback riding.

Daytime temperatures start to tip into the high 80s (the low 30s centigrade), making dips in the ocean extremely refreshing. But the trade winds coming from the coast also help keep things comfortable, taking the edge off the heat. With the end of the high season, you can find some great travel deals for your stay.

Low season is the best time for a bargain (June–November)

Summer in the Dominican Republic means daily rainstorms and the start of hurricane season. It doesn't rain all day every day, but blazing temperatures mixed with frequent downpours contribute to soupy levels of humidity that most travelers are keen to avoid. But the less-than-ideal weather also makes the off-season an incredible deal when it comes to booking hotels and excursions.

While rain is often on the forecast, the good news is that storms sweep through just as fast as they came. You can always count on the sun to make its way out from behind the clouds in quick order — and just in time for your next adventure.

When is hurricane season in the Dominican Republic?

June kicks off the Caribbean’s hurricane season, which runs through to November 30, bringing a chance of severe weather. Most of the action stirs up around August and September, but any month during the hurricane season is fair game for a major storm. While direct hits are infrequent (the last major hurricane to strike the island was Hurricane Beryl in 2018 ), it pays to have decent travel insurance if you’re planning to visit at this time, just in case a hurricane decides to crash the party.

Go whale watching in January

New Year’s celebrations and several end-of-month festivals make January a lively time to visit. But it's a popular time to come, so expect crowds and high prices. You can count on nine hours of sunshine every day, with little to no chance of rain, and there are plenty of events, including the colorful Guloya Festival celebrating the island's Cuban community. Temperatures can drop below 70ºF (21ºC) during the evenings, so bring a light long-sleeved layer to cover up with after dark. January is also the peak of the whale watching season off the Península de Samaná , with regular sightings through to mid-March. Key events: Dia de los Reyes Magos, Dia de la Altagracia, Juan Pablo Duarte Day, Guloya Festival

Participants in colorful costumes during the Dominican Republic's Carnaval

Celebrate Carnival season in February

Dry weather, mixed with Carnaval festivities and water sports competitions, makes February the prime time for people-watching and partying. High season is in full swing, so expect big crowds of rowdy revelers taking advantage of the final day of Carnaval, which also coincides with the Dominican Republic’s Independence Day (February 27). Note that some Carnaval parades continue into early March. Key events: Carnaval Dominican Republic, Master of the Ocean water sports contest

Head to the beach in March

Temperatures are getting warmer, but the heat isn’t swelteringly hot just yet, and rain is still at a minimum. It’s the perfect month for beach-bound sunseekers and for swimming and snorkeling in the warm waters surrounding the island. Key events: Carnaval Dominican Republic (last events), Isle of Light Music Festival

The best beaches in the Dominican Republic

Take a hike in April

As the last month of the Dominican Republic’s dry season, April still sees its share of crowds, but they start to dwindle towards the end of the month as the chance of rain starts to increase. With 10 hours of daylight and relatively low humidity, the moderate weather makes for comfortable hikes and sightseeing excursions. Key event: Puerto Plato Open

El Limon waterfall, Dominican Republic

Budget travelers arrive in May

As the heat index climbs, the crowds start to dwindle and travel deals start to pop up for flights, hotels and activities. Rain becomes more frequent, but the showers don’t have the fervor of the summer storms. A handful of cultural celebrations bring color to the streets of Santo Domingo . Key events: Santo Domingo de Fiesta, Espiritu Santo Festival

Hurricane season begins in June, as visitor numbers slump

It’s the official start of hurricane season, and with it comes the rain. Expect hot, sunny days with daily downpours in the late afternoon. On the other hand, prices are low, as are tourist numbers. Key events: Puerto Plaza Cultural Festival, Punta Cana Food and Wine Festival

Crowds thin out further in July, and big storms are still rare

Heat and humidity remain constant companions in July, with temperatures reaching sticky and uncomfortable highs. It’s not quite the peak of hurricane season so the risk of dangerous storms remains relatively low. Key event: Merengue Festival

Rates are at their lowest in August

It’s the height of summer and the peak of hurricane season — and also the hottest month of the year. Most of the heavy storm activity takes place in August and September, so keep a careful eye on the forecast for news on approaching depressions. However, hotel rates are at their lowest during this month. Key event: Restoration Day

Snorkeller touching starfish on seabed

Heat and humidity are king in September

The hurricane threat remains high during the month of September, but budget travel deals abound. The heat and humidity at this time can be stifling, making outdoor activities difficult (or less enjoyable). But for those who enjoy the heat, it’s an excellent time to sunbathe on the beach in between rain showers.  Key events: Dia de las Mercedes, Feria Ganadera El Cupey

Do I need a visa to visit the Dominican Republic?

Crowds start to arrive in October

Slightly cooler temperatures take the edge off the heat — expect eight hours of daylight as daytime highs start to fall to more manageable levels. The weather still remains patchy, but toward the end of the month the crowds begin to settle in and prices start to increase. Key events: Puerto Plata Festival, Festival Presidente, Dominican Republic Jazz Festival

Enjoy the outdoors in November

The weather finally settles down as the end of the month brings the close of the hurricane and wet seasons. The sun shines more consistently and temperatures aren’t quite as uncomfortably hot. This is a great time to explore the jungle-covered interior or hike to one of the island’s picturesque waterfalls. Key events: Día de la Constitución, Merengue Típico Festival, Colonial Fest

The holiday season kicks off in December

Blissfully blue skies, low humidity and downright pleasurable temperatures make December a massively popular time to visit the island (the winter holidays in Europe and the US also help). Crowds are growing, and prices are increasing, but so are the parties and festivities. The fun reaches its apex on New Year’s Eve. Key event: New Year’s Eve

Weather in the Dominican Republic

  • Peak Tourist Season
  • Key Holidays & Festivals
  • Frequently Asked Questions

The best time to visit the Dominican Republic is in April and May, in the interim between peak tourist crowds and hurricane season. Come winter, when travelers up north are looking to escape the cold, prices are known to increase drastically. We've considered crowds, costs, and the likelihood of sunny days when compiling this month-by-month weather and event guide to the Dominican Republic. Read on to determine when you should visit the Dominican Republic, and get ready to start planning your next trip.

The weather in the Dominican Republic varies depending on whether you're staying on the coast or in the interior. The beach is generally quite warmer, and the climate in the ever-popular Punta Cana, for example, remains relatively consistent throughout the year. The weather in December and January is relatively dry, while February through April ushers in slightly warmer temperatures and, eventually, the first of the Dominican Republic's two wet seasons. (The first occurs from May to June, while the second runs from August to November. ) September is also the month of heightened hurricane activity, so cautious visitors should purchase travel insurance.

Peak Tourist Season in the Dominican Republic

Although the busy season technically begins in the Dominican Republic in December, it is not until mid-month that prices will start to skyrocket, so wise travelers should plan for an early vacation during the last month of the year. As more travelers are venturing down to this Caribbean oasis for their holidays, the peak tourist season extends from mid-December through to April. Would-be visitors looking to travel to the Dominican Republic during this period should plan their hotel bookings and airfare in advance.

Key Holidays & Festivals in the Dominican Republic

Whether the festival's cause is religious, musical, or historical, there is no shortage of holidays and celebrations in the Dominican Republic. From Patron Saint Celebrations to public holidays , the calendar year is filled with diverting excuses for visitors and locals alike to get together and (salsa) dance. There are two Independence Days celebrated in the Dominican Republic—the first celebrates independence from Haiti in February, and the second, from Spain, in August.

January is a popular time for visitors to travel to the Dominican Republic, as the tropics are always an appealing option for the holidays when visitors find themselves choosing between the polar vortex up north or the Caribbean beaches to the south (and preferring the latter). The temperature can drop on January evenings, however, to a chilly 72 F (22 C), so visitors to the Dominican Republic should pack some light layers as well.

Events to check out:

  • On Jan. 21, the Día de la Altagracia is held in tribute to the patron saint. The Virgin de Altagracia is commemorated with annual pilgrimages to her 16th-century painting, hanging in a basilica in Higüey. For the less devout, fear not: There is always partying that follows the praying.
  • Another important holiday is Juan Pablo Duarte Day when people march the streets in honor of the legendary activist’s birthday. The holiday is always held on the Monday closest to his birthday: Jan. 26.

Though still in peak tourist season, there are many reasons why visitors may want to consider traveling to the Dominican Republic in February. Aside from the dry weather, there are enticing parties and festivities occurring throughout the month, from Carnival to the Independence Day Parade.

  • The final day of the Dominican Carnival, Feb. 27, also commemorates the date when the Dominican Republic gained independence from Haiti, which means that the festivities and celebrations are twice as impressive. The Independence Day Parade marks the final close of Carnival, ending the season on a high.

The average high from March through April is 82 F (28 C), with an average low averaging around 73 F(23 C) during this time period as well. This is a very beautiful month to visit for the weather: At this time of year, the temperatures are rising and the rainfall, luckily for would-be sunbathers, is not.

  • Two critical battles from the Dominican Republic's war for independence are commemorated with public holidays in March. The Batalla del 19 de Marzo (the Battle of March 19th) recognizes a crucial day of fighting in 1844 Azua, while the Batalla del 30 de Marzo (also known as the Batalla de Santiago) recognizes another battle fought later that very month.

April represents the last month of the busy season for tourists. The late winter/early spring temperatures (relatively consistent since February), are warmer than in prior months, while the wet season has yet to arrive. However, it will begin raining towards the end of the month.

  • Easter celebrations (including Good Friday and Palm Sunday) in the Dominican Republic are a serious matter, and the festivities that occur during Christian Holy Week are known to combine church-going with parties, and, occasionally, voodoo (if you’re of Haitian descent).

While May brings in slightly more rainfall (and is the arrival of the second wet season in popular regions such as Punta Cana), this month boasts an irresistible combination of sunny days and lower prices and is an often-overlooked month for would-be visitors. (Read: You won't be tasked with navigating too many crowds.)

  • The Espiritu Santo Festival celebrates African sounds and music in rural areas throughout the country. If you’re visiting during that period, you should attend a celebration, not only for the lively and joyous ambiance but also for the spectacular conga drumming. The most vibrant celebration of all occurs in Villa Mella, located just outside of Santo Domingo .

Although June is technically the beginning of both the wet season and the hurricane season, the chances of either heavy rainfall or tropical storms are not significant this early in the season. Travelers should pack breathable clothing, however, to combat the heat.

  • The Puerto Plaza Cultural Festival takes place on the third week of June, and displays an array of dancing, from African tribal to salsa to merengue.
  • For those who would rather eat than dance, the Food & Wine Festival also occurs in June, in the luxurious environs of Punta Cana.

The likelihood of tropical storms increases in July, though that risk remains low at this period in the year, making the month a very appealing time for travelers to visit. Another draw, aside from the lowered price points? The Merengue Festival, which transforms the city of Santo Domingo into a week-long party in the streets.

  • The Merengue Festival is a week of live music and dancing (as well as delicious food) along the boulevard of El Malecon in Santo Domingo. Taking place in late July, the big event transforms the Dominican capital into an even more vibrant destination for visitors.

August is the hottest month with an average temperature of 83 F, and it is also the wettest month, seeing 4.57 average inches of rainfall. Visitors should be prepared both sartorially and mentally when traveling to the Dominican Republic in August. Bring light, breathable clothing, and maybe don't plan on running that half-marathon in the heat.

  • On Aug. 16, the Dominican Republic celebrates Restoration Day, when locals march the streets in celebration of regaining their independence from Spain (for the second time) in 1863.

As it's the peak of hurricane season, September is an unwise month to travel for overly-cautious visitors or travelers who want to spend maximal hours in the sun. The regular rainfall may interrupt any outdoor activities on your itinerary, so we recommend that visitors in September purchase travel insurance as a cautionary measure. If you do decide to visit this time of year, plan indoor events and activities as a backup option in case your beach day is rained out.

  • The Dia de las Mercedes is an annual procession on Sept. 24 in honor of Our Lady of Mercy, the Virgin who helped assist Christopher Columbus in battle.

Things begin to cool down in the month of October, with an average high of 84 F (29 C) that will remain in November. As the humidity subsides, travelers are recommended to pack layers for evening activities.

  • The Puerto Plata Festival occurs every October on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, with Fuerte San Felipe serving as the go-to destination for the musical festivities. Expect lively dancing, enthusiastic parades, and vivid costumes.

November marks the conclusion to the second wet season, and travelers will find that the island's signature sun will begin to shine more regularly once again. Given the fact that this is still the off-season, visitors would be wise to consider booking their travel for November, when the temperatures rise, but the price remains low.

  • The Día de la Constitución (Constitution Day) is a public holiday every year. Though it falls on the 6th, the date is often adjusted to accommodate a long weekend for would-be vacationers.

The tourist season begins in the Dominican Republic in mid-December, so visitors looking to capitalize on cheaper deals should book trips towards the beginning of the month.

  • Head to Ave George Washington Avenue on New Year’s Eve to celebrate the upcoming year, and celebrate as fireworks are set off over the coastline at midnight.

The best months to visit the Dominican Republic are April and May, after the peak tourist season but before the start of the rainy season.

Winter is the busiest season in the Dominican Republic, especially from December to March. The weather is warm, the days are sunny, and it's perfect for hitting the beach. Just expect to pay high season prices.

The rainy season starts in May, picks up throughout the summer, and ends in November. Thunderstorms are common but typically come and go quickly. This is also hurricane season, but a major storm hitting the island is unlikely.

How to travel to the Dominican Republic for less

Visit Dominican Republic gives you the tips to help you find a smooth route to your destination for less. Planning your route with our tips will make your trip more affordable and help you find the cheapest flights to the Dominican Republic.

The best times to fly to the Dominican Republic

Knowing exactly when to head to the Dominican Republic can make a big difference in your traveling costs.

Airfares to the island tend to peak between December and May, when the DR’s mild weather lures travelers from around the world. For discount airfares, consider braving the summer months. September is said to be the cheapest month to travel. It's a risk, though - hurricanes like September, too, meaning you might have to enjoy your holiday indoors and reschedule any planned adventures featuring beaches, coasts and islands.

Whichever month you choose, make sure you book your ticket at least three weeks in advance to get the best deals.

How to save on your flight? The airport matters!

There are seven international airports on the island nation of the Dominican Republic. In the south of the country, there's the capital city of Santo Domingo (airport code: SDQ), the Barahona airport (BRX) (this one’s near national biological reserves), and La Romana (LRM), your most direct route for the beaches surrounding La Romana . The tourist haven Punta Cana is on the east coast and has its very own airport as well (PUJ).

You'll also find three airports to the north, one near the cruise ships of Puerto Plata (POP), one near the whale-watching destination of Samana (AZS) and the landlocked “second capital” of the DR - Santiago de los Caballeros (STI).

The cheapest airports to fly to are (usually) the ones with higher volume. The biggest and busiest airports are Santo Domingo (SDQ), Santiago de los Caballeros (STI), Puerto Plata (POP), and Punta Cana (PUJ).

Punta Cana is the leading airport in Central America and the Caribbean with close to 2 million tourists arriving in its luxurious environs every year. It's the cheapest way to fly to the island, but at a good 6-10 hour drive from other cities, it’s not necessarily your best bet if your destination is elsewhere. If you're headed to the beaches of Punta Cana, though, you’re in luck!

If you're making multiple stops, fly into Santo Domingo, the island’s second-busiest airport, which offers lots of connecting legs to other Dominican and Caribbean destinations. Or choose Santiago de los Caballeros or Puerto Plata. An Uber or cab ride from any of these airports to the nearest CaribeTours office can get you on a comfortable, American-style bus ride to almost any destination in the country.

Heading to Samana ? Direct flights cost three-to-five times the price of flying to Santo Domingo, Santiago or Puerto Plata. Save a fortune by flying into one of these airports instead and jump on a bus to Samana with CaribeTours for just $10-$15 dollars.

Now that you have a better idea which airport to fly into, let's look at which airlines are the least expensive.

From Canada and the United States

Over 60% of tourists entering the Dominican Republic are from North America. As a result, most major airlines of Canada and the United States fly to the Dominican Republic, including JetBlue, Spirit, American Airlines, United, Delta, Air Canada, Air Transat, Sunwing, Westjet and Emirates.

Delta and JetBlue offer the most flights (especially on the popular JFK to Santo Domingo route) and are your best bet for cheap flights to the Dominican Republic.

From Europe

Iberia, TIU Airways, Condor, Air Europa, Air France, British Airways, SWISS and Eurowings all fly to the Dominican Republic. Punta Cana is the most popular destination from all European cities, and is therefore likely to be your least expensive first stop.

If you’re arriving from Europe, remember that the cheapest way to get to your final destination is usually to fly to PUJ and then take a Caribetours bus the rest of the way.

Non-stop flights

Good news! Non-stop flights to the Dominican Republic cost about the same as flights with layovers.

Non-stop flights arrive year-round from New York, Miami, Houston, Fort Lauderdale, and Atlanta. Like JFK, the Fort Lauderdale flight can be one of the least expensive, but note that cancellations seem to be more common when flying out of the state of Florida.

From Canada, most destinations in the Dominican Republic can be reached non-stop via Montreal and Toronto. Planning a trip to Punta Cana? You’ll find even more Canadian cities offering direct flights to Punta Cana, including Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Ottawa, Quebec and St. John’s.

From Europe, you can arrive non-stop from London, Madrid, Paris, Frankfurt, Brussels, and Munich. Note that even when they are considered non-stop, flights from Europe have to refuel somewhere before arriving in the Dominican Republic.

More money-saving tips

Check baggage policies for your airline and travel accordingly to avoid extra fees.

The Dominican Republic saves tourists time and money by not requiring visas for visitors from Canada, the United States, the European Union or Great Britain and the majority of other countries. See the full list here .

You can also save with accommodations that offer free shuttle services to and from local airports. If your hotel doesn't offer a shuttle, Uber functions well in most parts of the country. The app makes it easy to get you to your destination without knowing a word of Spanish.

Arrive and travel with ease, and without spending a fortune. Welcome to the Dominican Republic!

The Best Time to Visit the Dominican Republic

Beach at Portblue Le Sivory Punta Cana

Beach at Portblue Le Sivory Punta Cana

The Dominican Republic is a small country that borders Haiti on the island of Hispaniola. Its gorgeous waters, soft-sand beaches, popular golf courses, and rugged terrain draw beach bums and adventure-seekers alike. Year-round temperatures stay warm, with average lows hitting the mid-70s and highs reaching around 90 degrees Fahrenheit. While you can wear your swimsuit during any month, the rainy hurricane season might prevent you from hitting the beach every day. Those willing to take a chance on the rainy off-season will be rewarded with lower rates, less crowds, and good river conditions, though you'll miss out on the D.R.'s best snorkeling, diving, whale watching, and other perks that come with visiting in the peak season.

Keep in mind that this is a destination where most travelers tend to stick to their all-inclusive resorts. If you want to make sure your visit has a positive impact on the locals and their economy, plan an excursion beyond the resort areas, use local vendors when appropriate, and tip your resort staff. No matter when you decide to go, you'll be met with beautiful surroundings and a welcoming vibe, but just in case you've got your eye on a specific experience, we've broken down what you can expect in each month.

December, January, and February in the Dominican Republic

Beach at Luxury Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado

Beach at Luxury Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado

The drop in temps up north mean many folks flock to the Dominican Republic over winter months, making December through February one of the busiest times for the country. Wintertime travelers will catch balmy temps that hover in the high 70s to mid-80s, while also avoiding hurricane season, which ends on November 30. December is also the start of whale-watching season, and every year, over 2,000 humpback whales are drawn to the warm waters at the Samana Peninsula. Samana Bay’s Sanctuary of the Humpback Whales is a top spot for catching a glimpse of breaching adults and newborns swimming against their mothers. The winter months also draw divers and snorkelers looking to combine warm weather and high odds for spotting whales. February is also a popular pick thanks to the first of two annual Carnival celebrations. The busiest times to visit are around Christmas and New Year’s, when the resorts are at full capacity and premium-priced rooms get snatched up months in advance.

March in the Dominican Republic

Dominican Tree House Village

Dominican Tree House Village

March marks your last chance for whale watching, and the beginning of the seasonal lobster ban (which means no delicious Caribbean lobster on menus for a few months). You’ll find fewer crowds than over the winter months, noticeably less children, and slightly lower hotel rates. Lower occupancy levels also mean you don’t have to plan months in advance, like in the winter. The weather in March is comfortable, with highs in the mid-80s and lows in the upper 60s. Since March is a relatively dry month in the D.R., it’s a great time to go hiking or try your hand at rappelling and canyoning in the mountains.

April in the Dominican Republic

Beach at Eden Roc at Cap Cana

Beach at Eden Roc at Cap Cana

April still has great weather and a few spring break stragglers, but by mid-month, hotel rates really start to drop as the low season starts to creep in. Great weather, low rates, and fewer people make April an ideal time to visit, especially if you’re hoping to avoid both crowds and hurricane season. However, local businesses also take advantage of the off-season, meaning you’ll likely run into a lot places that are closed for renovations. It’s always good to call and ask hotels if there will be construction on-site or nearby, especially if you’re planning to stay over the slow season.

May in the Dominican Republic

Aerial View of Paradisus Palma Real Golf & Spa Resort/Oyster

Paradisus Palma Real Golf and Spa Resort

May is one of the D.R.’s rainiest months, particularly in Punta Cana, so those willing to brave the showers will be rewarded with lower rates and less people. If you’re interested in learning how to catch a wave, May’s showers provide decent, but not overwhelming, waves that are perfect for beginners or intermediate surfers. These milder waves last up until September, when larger swells take over. Unfortunately, May is not the best month for underwater activities, since storms can disrupt the sand and cloud visibility. It also makes for bumpy boat rides, and can easily rain out scheduled golf games or planned beach days.

June in the Dominican Republic

cheapest month to visit dominican republic

Water Park at Memories Splash Punta Cana

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that one of the D.R.’s busiest seasons is summer, when the kids are out of school. The country’s second annual Carnival festival takes place in mid-August, so if you’re looking to join in the celebration, be sure to time your trip right. July and August are also the best months to bump along the Yaque del Norte River on a white water rafting adventure. This is the longest river in the Caribbean, and the only spot to experience real white water rafting in the region. Water levels during the summer are high enough for good Class II and Class III thrills, while rapids and surges can get hectic further into the rainy season. Lobster lovers, take note: July 1 marks the end of the seasonal lobster ban, so visitors who visit from now until the end of February will find succulent, fresh-caught lobsters on the menu.

September and October in the Dominican Republic

Pool at Hilton La Romana

Pool at Hilton La Romana

September and October present the highest threat for hurricanes, and as a result, bring the some of the cheapest hotel rates all year. October can be drenched with rain, washing out those idyllic beach days and pretty golf courses. Lots of rain means big swells for surfers, and the northern Cabarete area near Puerto Plata becomes a hot spot for advanced riders seeking big waves. The weather during September and October is pleasant, but has the most variation, with highs around 90 degrees and lows in the mid-70s. Festivals tend to drop off in these months, though Dominican Republic’s Fashion Week lands in October.

November in the Dominican Republic

Piergiorgio Palace Hotel

Piergiorgio Palace Hotel

November is the final month of hurricane season in the Dominican Republic, and the first big month of surf season for pros. Western storm systems are in full swing, pushing large, consistent waves this way. These waves aren’t recommended for beginners or low-level intermediates. Even though winter is approaching, the temperature stays warm, with average temperatures hanging in the 80s. Since it’s the tail-end of hurricane season, rain is still a possibility, though it’s unlikely to cancel out a day’s plans. Those who do visit during this shoulder month can find good deals, few people, and unpredictable weather.

Macao Beach – one of the most amazing places in the Dominican Republic

Who doubts that the Dominican Republic is one of the most attractive vacation destinations in the world? Nobody. It is true that this Caribbean destination is gaining more popularity despite all mass media rumors about its resorts.

Just for your information: 7,937,942 passengers passed through the Dominican airports during the first six months of 2019 ( view source ). It means the 4,8% increase in comparison with 2018. People love the Dominican Republic and want to visit it throughout the year. However, nobody wants to spend much money on such trips.

  • So, When is the Cheapest Time to Go to Punta Cana?

The answer seems obvious: the prices rise during the high season from November until April. Logically, the prices from May to October are expected to be lower. However, it is not always so. Let us first specify what kind of products and services we evaluate. If we speak about cost of lodging, indeed it is more economic from May to October. The cheapest hotel rooms can be booked for July. The same applies to vacation rentals.

If we speak about plane tickets, mind that the prices are more or less the same over the year and may even rise during the low season due to two factors. First, there are fewer flights during the low season. Second, tourists come to the Dominican Republic all year round and the demand is still high during the so-called low season. This means that the chance to buy cheap last-minute tickets is very low from May to October. It may be even hard to buy any tickets.

Nevertheless, imagine that you are already in Punta Cana, the most popular touristic area of the Dominican Republic. You came here during the low season to avoid spending too much. However, many service providers here are experiencing “hunger” during the low season and instead of reducing prices, increase them. For example, taxi drivers often charge more during the low season: tourists have no choice – they need transportation anyway. Restaurants and cafes may also increase prices to cover expenses due to a smaller number of visitors.

  • A Cheap Trip is Not Only About Season

This means that a cheap trip is not only about season, but also about getting enough information on how to save money in the Caribbean paradise. Here are our basic tips:

  • Punta Cana is the place attracting world-famous performers and singers. Mind that on the eve of long-awaited concerts and performances, the prices go up tremendously. Check entertainment and concert listings before planning your trip. Thus, you will save significant sums on lodging, transportation and local services.
  • Try to investigate lodging prices on your own, not through touristic agencies. Surf such platforms as Airbnb and Booking a few months before your trip. You will always find some good deals! To make sure you choose the best place for stay, pay attention to websites of local hospitality managers. For example, on our website you can book apartments and villas directly from the owner, without paying extra fees.
  • Book your transportation beforehand instead of taking a taxi upon arrival. We offer comfortable transfers, and you can book them with us or other transportation providers and save up to 40% in comparison with the cost of local taxi.
  • Book your excursions directly from the excursion organization bureau, avoiding fees to intermediaries. Check our site for the best excursion offers! Our guides are available to answer any questions you might have.

Now you see that it is possible to have a budget-friendly trip to Punta Cana at any time of the year. It is just necessary to plan your trip beforehand and look for the best deals: rental prices, excursions, transportation and food. Even if now you see that you could have spent less during your last trip to Punta Cana, do not hesitate to visit the Caribbean paradise again! Our useful tips will help you have a great time for the most reasonable price!

Cheapest Time to Go to the Dominican Republic: Discover the Tranquil Side of the Dominican Republic

Cheapest Time to Go to Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a sought-after travel destination known for its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. If you’re looking to experience this tropical paradise without breaking the bank, the key lies in choosing the right time to visit. In this article, we’ll guide you through the various tourist seasons, with a special focus on the low season, to help you plan a budget-friendly and unforgettable trip to the Dominican Republic.

Understanding the Tourist Seasons in the Dominican Republic

Before diving into the details of the low season, it’s essential to understand the three primary tourist seasons: high, shoulder, and low.

The high season, running from December to April, attracts a large influx of visitors, resulting in higher prices for accommodations, flights, and activities. This period coincides with the colder months in many parts of the world, making the Dominican Republic an attractive escape for those seeking warmer weather and sunny beaches.

The shoulder season, occurring in May and June, as well as September and October, offers a more balanced experience with moderate prices and fewer crowds compared to the high season. The weather during these months is still pleasant, and you can enjoy the beauty of the Dominican Republic without the peak-season rush. It’s a great time for travelers who want to avoid the summer heat and enjoy the best of both worlds – decent weather and better prices.

Lastly, the low season, spanning from July to August and November, presents a unique opportunity for budget-conscious travelers to explore the Dominican Republic at its most affordable. While it falls within the hurricane season, the likelihood of encountering a major storm is relatively low. Traveling during these months allows you to experience the country with fewer tourists and take advantage of significant cost savings on accommodations, flights, and tourist activities.

Low Season: Embracing the Unique Experience

The low season in the Dominican Republic offers several advantages that make it an appealing choice for travelers seeking a more personalized and authentic experience. Firstly, you’ll find attractions and beaches less crowded, allowing you to enjoy your favorite spots in a more tranquil and peaceful setting. Imagine strolling along the pristine shores with fewer people around, relaxing under a swaying palm tree, and taking in the breathtaking ocean views without the hustle and bustle.

With fewer tourists around, hotel staff and tour guides can dedicate more attention to you, enhancing the overall quality of your journey. Whether you’re staying at a luxurious resort or a cozy boutique hotel, the personalized service and attention to detail during the low season create a sense of exclusivity, making you feel like a VIP guest.

Moreover, the low season allows you to connect with locals and immerse yourself in the genuine culture of the Dominican Republic. Engage in conversations with friendly locals, participate in local traditions and festivals, and savor the authentic flavors of Dominican cuisine without the rush. You’ll have the opportunity to dine at popular local eateries and explore the bustling food markets, where you can indulge in delicious and budget-friendly meals.

In addition to cultural immersion, securing reservations for popular restaurants and excursions becomes much easier during the low season. Whether you want to try a famous seafood restaurant, embark on a thrilling adventure tour, or explore historical landmarks, you won’t have to worry about availability or long wait times.

The most significant draw of the low season, though, lies in the cost savings it offers. Hotels and tour operators provide enticing discounts and promotions to attract visitors during off-peak months. You’ll find lower prices on accommodations, flights, and tourist activities, allowing you to stretch your budget further and enjoy more during your stay in the Dominican Republic.

Imagine staying at a beachfront resort with stunning views at a fraction of the high-season cost or booking a guided tour to explore the country’s natural wonders without breaking the bank. With the extra savings, you can treat yourself to additional excursions, shop for souvenirs, or even extend your vacation by a few extra days.

Weather Considerations During Low Season

While the low season brings cost benefits and fewer crowds, it’s essential to be mindful of the weather conditions during this period. The rainy season occurs during July and August, resulting in occasional rain showers and the possibility of storms. However, don’t let this discourage you! The silver lining lies in the lush green landscapes and waterfalls in full flow, creating a breathtakingly beautiful backdrop for your adventures.

During the rainy season, you might experience short but intense rain showers that typically don’t last long. Pack a lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho, and you’ll be ready to explore the Dominican Republic’s attractions regardless of the weather.

Moreover, the rainy season brings cooler temperatures, making it more comfortable to explore outdoor activities without feeling overheated. You can embark on nature hikes, visit botanical gardens, or take a refreshing dip in natural pools, all while enjoying the lush greenery that comes alive during this time of year.

When packing for your low-season trip, it’s wise to come prepared for variable weather. Bring both sunny and rainy-day essentials, such as lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and rain gear. In case the weather takes a turn, consider exploring indoor activities and attractions, such as museums and art galleries, to make the most of your time.

Keep in mind that weather patterns can vary depending on the specific region of the Dominican Republic you plan to visit. While the southern and western coasts might experience more rain during the rainy season, the northern coast tends to have more stable weather with less rainfall.

Unique Low Season Events and Festivals

The low season in the Dominican Republic is not just about cost savings and fewer tourists; it also brings exclusive events and festivals that add to the cultural charm of your visit. Throughout the year, various celebrations take place that offer a deeper connection to the local traditions and customs.

For example, the annual Dominican Republic Jazz Festival, which takes place in November, showcases world-class jazz musicians and creates a vibrant atmosphere of music and art. Attendees can enjoy free concerts at various locations, including the picturesque beach town of Cabarete.

Another exciting event to look forward to is the Puerto Plata Festival of Lights, celebrated in early December. During this festival, the streets of Puerto Plata are adorned with enchanting Christmas lights and decorations, creating a magical ambiance. You can stroll through the illuminated streets, attend cultural performances, and indulge in traditional holiday treats.

These are just a few examples of the unique events and festivals that take place exclusively during the low season. By planning your trip around these special occasions, you can enhance your cultural experience and create unforgettable memories during your time in the Dominican Republic.

Now that you know the advantages of visiting the Dominican Republic during the low season, you can plan your budget-friendly and unforgettable trip with confidence. Embrace the serenity, immerse yourself in the local culture, and capture beautiful memories without straining your wallet.

Sunny beach in Punta Cana

Punta Cana is warm year-round, so there’s no need to worry about chilly weather. Rain, however, can play a role in when you book your trip and which activities you pursue. Precipitation bottoms out between December and April — hence the popularity of Punta Cana as a holiday and spring break destination.

In May, precipitation picks up considerably, although you’re still likely to enjoy several sunny days during your trip. Humidity may be a factor, but the beach should remain comfortable throughout this rainier than average month.

The Atlantic’s hurricane season begins to impact the area in June, with the threat of hurricane-influenced weather continuing through November. October in particular can be rainy. A little rain won’t necessarily spoil your fun and you may even find that conditions during Punta Cana’s rainy season are still far preferable to conditions back home (especially if you live in a region where it snows!).

Late summer and autumn can be especially unpredictable in Punta Cana. If you’re willing to put up with the occasional shower, you may discover that you appreciate the reduced crowds and the surprising range of indoor activities offered by your resort.

Crowd of people walking in Punta Cana

No matter when you visit Punta Cana, it’s possible to find a serene all inclusive resort experience. That being said, you’ll see a lot more tourists during peak seasons, including spring break and the winter holidays. Mid-February can also prove busy; many couples regard Punta Cana as the perfect Valentine’s getaway. It’s tough to avoid crowds completely in a top destination such as Punta Cana, but if you book an intimate resort in May or October, you’re likely to enjoy a laid-back experience.

Travel booking in Punta Cana

In Punta Cana, costs typically correspond with both weather and crowds. Picture-perfect weather during peak season lends itself to higher prices. If you’re willing to take on a bit of risk (in terms of weather) and visit outside of peak season, you could score significant discounts on flights, accommodations, and activities. You’ll find the best deals if you choose to travel during the months of September, October, and November — especially before Thanksgiving. Prices are also reasonable in May when precipitation and humidity hit an early peak.

Special Events

Festival in Punta Cana

Another factor worth considering: local events that bring an especially festive vibe to Punta Cana and surrounding communities. While the area is vibrant year-round, you’ll find the best opportunities for mixing with locals and tourists alike during cultural celebrations.

In late February, Dominican Independence Day festivities feature beautiful outfits and exciting dance parties. Soon after, Punta Cana Music Week brings some of the world’s most renowned artists to the Dominican Republic. Additionally, March ushers in One Big Holiday, which attracted favorites such as Portugal. The Man and Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats for this year’s event. In May, ColorBloc delivers amazing music, film, fashion, and more to the heart of Punta Cana.

Big events are worth noting, but you’ll also find plenty of exciting occasions at your all inclusive resort. Check with your preferred property to determine when themed parties, live shows, or other special events are planned.

A visit to Punta Cana can involve beautiful scenery, luxurious accommodations, and amazing memories. You and your fellow travelers may be better suited to some seasons than others, depending on your vacation priorities. As you determine the best time to visit, think carefully about weather, preferred activities, crowds, and price. Choose accordingly, and you’ll have a blast while sticking to your budget!

The Best Time for Accommodations

When it comes to finding cheap accommodation, June and July are usually the best months

When it comes to finding cheap accommodations, June and July are usually the best months. The weather is still warm and sunny during this time; however, there is less of a tourist presence, so hotels will sometimes offer steep discounts to attract more guests. Other than that, midweek stays—Monday through Thursday—are cheaper than weekend stays as they tend to be less popular with travelers who can only take short trips away from home or work commitments.

Look for Inclusive Deals

Another great way to save money on travel

Another great way to save money when traveling is by opting for an all-inclusive package deal. This package usually includes airfare, accommodations, and meals at a discounted rate compared to purchasing each item separately. All-inclusive deals are also great because they will provide a comprehensive overview of what activities are included at no additional cost, such as golf courses or spa treatments.

Weather Considerations

The Caribbean climate is warm year-round; however, temperatures can vary depending on when you visit

The Caribbean climate is warm year-round; however, temperatures can vary depending on when you visit. During the off-season months (April through November), temperatures range between 80°F and 90°F with occasional rain showers—making it an ideal time for beach lovers who don’t mind some humidity and rain in exchange for more affordable lodging rates.

For travelers who prefer slightly cooler weather, December through March is the best time to visit as temperatures are typically around 70°F – 80°F with minimal rainfall .

rainy days

Punta Cana receives rain throughout the year with two distinct wet seasons—October through December and May through August. During these times, you can expect brief afternoon showers, which will cool down the air before dissipating quickly. Despite the wet season, Punta Cana remains very sunny due to its location near the equator.

Stormy days

Situated in the Atlantic Ocean off of Hispaniola’s easternmost point, Punta Cana is at risk for tropical storms and hurricanes from time to time. This area did not experience any major damage from Hurricanes Irma or Maria in 2017, but it is important to be aware of any active hurricane warnings prior to your trip. As always, safety should be your top priority, so make sure that you stay up-to-date on all weather advisories before heading out on your vacation!

Holiday Season Travel Tips

holiday season

For those looking to travel during the holiday season (November through January), several tips can help keep costs down: book flights well in advance; look for hotels or resorts that offer discounts; consider staying at an all-inclusive resort; take advantage of package deals that include airfare and lodging; and be flexible with dates if possible so you can take advantage of lower fares and better availability of accommodations.

Punta Cana is a fantastic destination with plenty of activities and sights to explore. If you’re looking for a great deal on your next getaway, consider planning your trip during one of the shoulder seasons in spring or fall or during off-peak months like June or July. Additionally, make sure to book your flights in advance and keep an eye out for package deals that include airfare and accommodation to save even more money on your vacation! With just a bit of planning ahead of time, you’ll be able to enjoy all that Punta Cana has to offer without breaking the bank!
