BY STEPHANIE JENSEN

On May 13th of this year, Chuck Schuldiner would have been 52-years-old. Even though his physical presence is no longer with us, his memory lives on with his legendary band Death and the music they created.

death tour members

Death’s discography is one of the most complex and unique of any extreme metal bands. Their first three albums— Scream Bloody Gore , Leprosy , and Spiritual Healing —used the harsh and fast stylings of death metal bands during that era. But Death transformed their sound with the band’s fourth album Human , evolving even more with their next releases, Individual Thought Patterns , Symbolic , and The Sound of Perseverance .

From the animosity of Death’s earlier material to the intricate musicianship heard in their later work, Schuldiner needed the right musicians for Death’s evolution. Here, we pay homage to those who played on every Death album and learn what they’re doing now.

death tour members

SCREAM BLOODY GORE (1987)

Death’s horror themed debut is nothing short of a masterpiece. It embodies the energy from the growing thrash movement and adds crushing riffs and solos so brutal they put you in a chokehold. Chuck not only played all guitar parts, but he also played bass on the album. However, he couldn’t create this iconic album alone. He had the help from one musician whose name is just as recognizable as Chuck’s.

death tour members

CHRIS REIFERT

When Chris Reifert recorded drums for the album that’s now a staple in death metal history, he was only 17-years-old. The recording perpetually left a mark on him, and after he left Death, he formed Autopsy. Their debut, Severed Survival, embodies the violence and gore of horror. Genius tracks such as “Charred Remains” leave a scar on your flesh, compelling you to come back for more.

The album is also famous for featuring bassist Steve Di Giorgio (who we will mention later). His perfect bass tone cuts like a sharpened blade on each song.

Since their debut, Autopsy has grown to release successful albums such as Mental Funeral and newer albums such as Tourniquets, Hacksaws, and Graves , which have received praise. Reifert also helped formed Abscess, and that band gained success before its disbandment.

Reifert currently plays in Autopsy and also has punk influenced band Violation Wound and psychedelic rock band Painted Doll. He’s also in the supergroup Siege of Power.

death tour members

LEPROSY (1988)

In the one year after Scream Bloody Gore ’s release, Death emerged with Leprosy . Even though this album still holds the gritty sound and brutality of Scream Bloody Gore , the album itself is better composed. The songs have more progression, the solos are more technical, and you can hear the maturity in this second release.

We may never know the real reason behind this quick advancement, but we do know Leprosy featured core players that highly influenced this album.

death tour members

RICK “ROZZ” DELILLO

This isn’t Rick Rozz’ first contribution to Death. He was a member of Chuck’s earlier band, Mantas, and appeared on Death’s early demos and EPs ( Reign of Terror and Infernal Death ). Once Chuck moved back to Florida after recording Scream Bloody Gore , Rick Rozz was one of the members he brought back for the recording of Leprosy . Rozz also toured with Death during their Leprosy runs in North America and Europe.

During the recording of the earlier Death demos, Rick Rozz helped form Massacre along with guitarist Allen West, drummer Bill Andrews (who we will mention later on), and vocalist Kam Lee. Bassist Terry Butler also later joined.

Massacre is famous for their debut album From Beyond . This crushing release is known for being a major death metal influential album and is one of the albums that put Florida on the map for its legendary death metal scene.

Massacre has had a rugged road with consistent breakups and reunions. However, their 2011 reunion proved they’re in it for good. They released Back from Beyond in 2014, which also earned praise.

death tour members

BILL ANDREWS

Bill Andrews is another member who helped form Massacre and appeared on From Beyond . He left Massacre in 1993.

Andrews not only recorded drums for Leprosy , but also for Death’s third album Spiritual Healing . Andrews also toured with Death for Leprosy ’s North America, Europe, and Mexico tours and for Death’s Spiritual Healing tour. Controversy began when Chuck cancelled a European tour, but Andrews and bassist Butler upheld the contractual duties and continued the tour with replacement musicians. Chuck fired both musicians and took legal action, since they still used Death’s name.

Since his time in Death, Bill Andrews did some session work for the band Metalucifer.

death tour members

SPIRITUAL HEALING (1990)

Spiritual Healing was the beginning of Death’s turning point. They don’t feature the gore filled lyrics and thrash influenced agility. Instead, you hear impressive guitar work (thanks to Chuck, but also guitarist James Murphy) while still upholding the harsh tone mixed with more melody. This is apparent in songs such as “Living Monstrosity.”

Drummer Bill Andrews is back for this album, but Chuck also recruited Murphy and bassist Terry Butler.

death tour members

JAMES MURPHY

Spiritual Healing is the crossroads album between advancing Death’s sound and still upholding their previous thrashy death metal influences. Chuck needed a guitar player who was able to play with both influences. James Murphy was that man.

Spiritual Healing saw one of the biggest advancements in guitar work, and James Murphy had a huge influence on this. Murphy played the leads on the album, and every solo is absolutely perfect. Murphy is able to lash out with impressive guitar solos, but his signature style is heavy. However, he left Death soon after the recording.

Spiritual Healing wasn’t the first death metal album Murphy appeared on. Murphy also played guitar on British death metal band Cancer’s second album, Death Shall Rise .

Along with Death, Murphy is most famous for his work with Florida death metal band Obituary and thrash metal band Testament. You can hear his playing on Obituary’s Cause of Death (he really took that album to another level and delivered some of the best solos, such as the one in “Body Bag”) and Testament’s album Low and The Gathering .

In addition, Murphy has contributed a myriad of guest solos. This includes bands like Solstice, The Absence, Broken Hope, Gorguts, Dååth, Malevolent Creation, Gruesome, and Nevermore. He’s also recorded two solo albums.

Today, Murphy operates a recording studio, SafeHouse Production.

death tour members

TERRY BUTLER

With Death’s maturity, Chuck needed a more advanced and swift rhythm section. Terry Butler was the biggest addition to the lineup. He’s the epitome of classic death metal bass players and will forever go down in death metal history.

Spiritual Healing is the only Death album to feature bassist Terry Butler, and Butler also did the tours in support of the album. But in no way did Terry’s career end here.

After his time in Death, Terry went on to continue his work with Massacre. He’s featured on From Beyond , the EP I nhuman Condition , and Back from Beyond .

From here, Terry joined Chris Barnes’ band Six Feet Under on bass. He recorded a large part of their discography and toured with them until his departure from the band.

Today, Terry is in the band Obituary. He appeared on their most recent albums ( Inked in Blood , Ten Thousand Ways to Die , and Obituary ). He’s also in the supergroup Hideous.

death tour members

HUMAN (1991)

Human propelled Death forward to unknown territories in the realm of death metal. Death moved away from the graveling death metal sound, embossing their music with progressive songwriting. This is why Human is one of the most iconic releases in Death’s discography.

Human was also a turning point in Death’s lineup. Chuck decided to not hire full-time members and instead recruited session musicians. The lineup featured on Human is one of Death’s most famous—Cynic members Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert, along with bassist Steve Di Giorgio.

death tour members

PAUL MASVIDAL

Paul Masvidal is one of the most unique guitarists in death metal and still upholds and individualistic playing style with heavy jazz and fusion influences. This versatility made him the perfect match for the Human album.

After recording the album and touring with Death for awhile, he declined more writing and tour offers to focus on Cynic. In 1993, Cynic released the debut Focus . Cynic was a band that death metal fans at the time couldn’t conceive. Instead of harsh and aggressive, Cynic’s almost dream-like sound embodies Masvidal’s and Sean Reinert’s expert playing with Sean Malone’s serpentine bass. This dynamic trio with their unique sound makes Cynic an impossible band to replicate.

After the release of Focus , Cynic disbanded, and Masvidal worked on side-projects such as Aeon Spoke. Cynic reformed and released the album Traced in Air in 2008 and went on to achieve even more success with the 2011 EP Carbon-Based Anatomy and the 2014 album Kindly Bent to Free Us . Masvidal also made guest appearances for bands such as Persefone.

Drummer Sean Reinert left the band in 2015, and Cynic gained Trioscape’s drummer Matt Lynch. Cynic is still active and so far has released one new song, “Humanoid.” Masvidal is also making grounds as a solo artist and recently released the song “Parasite.” The song will appear on the EP Mythical , due out on May 31.

death tour members

STEVE DI GIORGIO

If we had to name the king of extreme metal bass, that title has to go to Steve Di Giorgio.

What isn’t there to say about Di Giorgio’s bass playing? Can we not elaborate on his skill, his technicality, and how he can even play with a three stringed bass? Can we not elaborate on his absolutely perfect tone?

Di Giorgio is a founding member of the California thrash metal band Sadus and played in Autopsy as a session musician for a brief time. But in 1991, he was crowned the next bassist of Death. His perfect bass lines first appeared on the Human album. Unfortunately, we can barely hear his bass (but the bassy goodness in the next album, Individual Thought Patterns , makes up for it). Di Giorgio also played in Control Denied, Chuck’s other band.

After Death and Control Denied, Di Giorgio is most famous for playing in Testament and Iced Earth. But he has played in a slew of bands, as an official member, a session musician, and as a touring musician. Some of those bands include Sebastian Bach, Obscura, Charred Walls of the Damned, and Obituary. He was also one of the touring members of the Death to All (later changed to DTA) Tour.

Today, he still plays in Testament and is in the supergroup Spirits of Fire. He also balances these bands with session work and other projects.

death tour members

SEAN REINERT

Think of the backbone of modern extreme metal drumming. A few names may come to mind. Well, Sean Reinert better be one of them. Chuck also brought Reinert in for the Human album. From the blastbeats to his insane drum fills, Reinert was doing things on drums that no other extreme metal drummer was doing.

Reinert is also famous for being a founding member of Cynic along with Masvidal, and he and Masvidal were in Aeon Spoke together. Reinert is also known for other bands such as Gordian Knot. Sean departed Cynic in 2015, but didn’t officially announce his exit until 2017, and he then joined the progressive rock band Perfect Beings.

death tour members

INDIVIDUAL THOUGHT PATTERNS (1993)

With Individual Thought Patterns , Death took a step ahead from Human and made their sound even more progressive and robust. The guitars on this album are relentless with solos and riffs attacking you from all directions. Di Giorgio makes another appearance on this album, whose bass lines mend perfectly with the guitars and drums.

As with all other Death albums, Chuck took another step up and found the perfect guitarist and drummer to ignite the flames on this album.

death tour members

ANDY LAROCQUE

Unlike the previous album Human , the guitars on Individual Thought Patterns fluctuate from crazy riffs to brutal shredding to impossible solos. Chuck needed a truly dynamic player, and there’s no one better to fit the role than Andy LaRocque. His neoclassical style comes out in songs such as “Overactive Imagination” and the “Individual Thought Patterns” title track. But his playing held so much vigor and aggression that fans had never heard before.

Andy LaRocque wasn’t a new guy to the professional music industry when he joined Death. He already gained success as King Diamond’s guitar player, who he still plays with today.

LaRocque also played as a guest guitarist for several notable bands. He played a guitar solo for the At the Gates song “Cold,” and his guitar work is also featured in bands such as Evergrey, Dimmu Borgir, and Shining.

As well as recording and playing with King Diamond, LaRocque owns Sonic Train Studios in Varberg, Sweden, where he has produced bands such as Evergrey, HammerFall, Dragonland, In Flames, Shining, and more.

death tour members

GENE HOGLAN

Gene Hoglan is a truly unique drummer. Known as “The Atomic Clock,” his drumming is creative but striking enough to be a perfect fit for Death’s Individual Thought Patterns album. Hoglan has worked with just about every legendary band in metal. Today, he’s known as one of the most influential metal drummers.

Like LaRocque, Hoglan wasn’t a new guy when he joined Death. He started his career as Slayer’s lighting engineer and played drums during their soundcheck. This led to Hoglan joining thrash band Dark Angel. After several Dark Angel albums, Hoglan joined Death for Individual Thought Patterns . His progressive drumming style fit the band’s direction flawlessly, and he also joined Death for their next album, Symbolic .

After his time in Death, Hoglan’s career flourished. He worked with bands such as Strapping Young Lad and Devin Townsend’s solo material, Testament, Dethklok, and Fear Factory.

Today, Hoglan still plays in Testament and Dark Angel. In 2017, he also released an art gallery, consisting of psychedelic themed photographs of him playing drums.

death tour members

SYMBOLIC (1995)

The previous two Death albums aimed to take Death’s music to a more progressive but equally heavy approach. However, there was something missing in those albums. Chuck and his troupe finally found the missing magic and created Symbolic .

Symbolic blends every influence so smoothly—heavy riffs and technical solos that provoke, all joined in unison with skillful drumming from Hoglan. Symbolic uses the best of dexterous composition, as heard in a song such as “Misanthrope.” However, the album isn’t just a shred and drumming fest. There are plenty of songs that convey all of the “feels,” such as “Empty Words.” This not only makes Symbolic one of Death’s most advanced albums, but yields so much passion.

With Symbolic , Chuck brought two fresh faces into the mix—Bobby Koelble (guitar) and Kelly Conlon (bass).

death tour members

BOBBY KOELBLE

Bobby Koelble’s jazz influenced guitar playing truly gave Symbolic the sentiment it still holds today. His playing is complex but melodious. He plays each note with extreme skill, but you can feel the passion from his fingertips.

Koelble is not only a notorious figure in death metal, but he’s a notable figure in jazz. After his time in Death, he took a break from extreme metal guitar and pursued a career in jazz guitar.

Orlando residents commonly see Koelble on stage, whether he’s playing cover tunes or he’s playing a jazz gig, and he has played with bands such as The Absinthe Trio and The Jazz Professors. Koelble also played guitar for iconic jazz artists such as Dr. Lonnie Smith, Sam Rivers, and Lou Donaldson.

Just because Koelble has had a successful stint in jazz doesn’t mean his heavy metal days are over. Koelble, a longtime metal and rock ‘n’ roll fan, still plays metal to this day. And in 2014, he joined previous Death musicians for the DTA (formerly Death to All) Tour. He has also appeared as a guest guitarist for several bands, including Monotheist and Abysmal Dawn.

Today, Koelble plays in many different bands in the Orlando area and teaches jazz guitar at Rollins College and the University of Central Florida (UCF).

death tour members

KELLY CONLON

Conlon’s bass perfectly held the speed to keep up with the duo of shredders and with Hoglan. Unfortunately, the bass got lost in these mixes (you hear it a little more in the remastered version, though). But at least we have that incredible opening bass line to “Sacred Serenity.”

After the recording of Symbolic , Conlon played on the Full of Hate Festivals in Europe in support of the album. Not long after, Conlon joined Florida death metal band Monstrosity and played on the albums Millennium and Dark Purity . Conlon also played for other bands such as Sargon and Fires of Babylon.

Today, he’s currently active in the death metal band Pessimist and Shatter Messiah.

death tour members

SOUND OF PERSEVERANCE (1998)

Unfortunately, our Death list has (almost) come to an end. Here, we’re at the last Death album before Chuck’s death in 2001.

With Sound of Perseverance , Death still continued on with the melodic overtones we heard on Symbolic , but with the vigorous aggression we’ve always experienced in Death’s discography. But the most unique aspect we hear is Chuck’s vocals—he switched to a high-pitched growl, replacing his coined midrange growls. We also hear some falsetto action in their cover of “Painkiller,” proving Chuck had an amazing range that fans never truly got to hear.

With Sound of Perseverance came three new musicians whose careers were forever influenced by this final Death album.

death tour members

SHANNON HAMM

Shannon Hamm’s guitar playing on the Sound of Perseverance album is of upmost supreme. His work on the track “A Moment of Clarity” is mind-blowing. From every riff to that incredible solo in the middle of the song, each note played prevails until the end of the song.

Hamm was the last guitarist in Death before Chuck’s passing. He also played in Chuck’s other band, Control Denied.

But how did Chuck find this virtuoso player? Hamm was actually a well known guitar player in the Texas metal scene. Hamm was in a band called Metalstorm and he supposedly “out shredded” Dimebag during Pantera’s glam metal days. According to an interview, Hamm said Chuck came across footage of Hamm playing in Metalstorm.

In 2012, Hamm was a guest on the Death to All Tour.

death tour members

RICHARD CHRISTY

Not sure what’s better—Richard Christy’s drum performance on the Sound of Perseverance album, or his unexpected encounter with Chuck Schuldiner.

Christy moved to Orlando in 1996. A year later, he meets Schuldiner in a bookstore at the Altamonte Springs Mall. He soon discovered Death needed a drummer. He auditioned for the role and was offered the position.

It’s easy to see why Chuck was so impressed with Christy’s drumming. His drum style uses the right amount of force, and his stylistic fills fit in perfectly with Chuck and Hamm’s guitar work.

In addition to performing on the album, Christy toured in Europe with Death in support of Sound of Perseverance . Christy was also the drummer for Control Denied and was a member of Death until Chuck’s death.

But this was only the beginning of Christy’s career. He became a member of Iced Earth and Leash Law. From here, Christy played with other reputable bands, including Demons & Wizards and Incantation. Christy took off a few years of playing music to work for the Howard Stern Show . After his hiatus, Christy formed the supergroup Charred Walls of the Damned with Di Giorgio, Audiohammer’s Jason Suecof, and vocalist Tim “The Ripper” Owens.

In addition to his music career and his work with the Howard Stern Show , Christy is also a filmmaker and even did voiceovers for the cartoon shows Metalocalypse and Rick and Morty .

Today, you can still experience Christy’s crazy antics on the Howard Stern Show . Christy is still making music. However, he’s not making music with humans. His band members are three guinea pigs, and they formed the band Boar Glue.

death tour members

SCOTT CLENDENIN

Any Death fan can recognize the beginning bass line to the song “Spirit Crusher.” Like many of Death’s albums, the bass is lost in the mixes of most songs. But this doesn’t affect Clendenin’s contributions to the album. Clendenin did the tours in support of Sound of Perseverance and contributed to Control Denied.

After his time in Death and Control Denied, he participated in the Death to All Tour during the years 2012 and 2013. Unfortunately, Clendenin passed away on March 24, 2015 at 47 years old.

‘Death to All’ Announce North American Tour With Obituary, Massacre + Rivers of Nihil

Looks like the rumors were true! A new Death to All tour has been announced and the bill is filled to the brim with brutality. Along with the Death tribute band, Obituary , Massacre, Rivers of Nihil and Untimely Demise will rip through North America beginning this November.

The passing of Death frontman Chuck Schuldiner remains one of metal's biggest and most tragic losses. The phenomenal frontman passed away from brain cancer in 2001, but his music remains as timeless as his memory.

Death to All has come in many forms, but this incarnation includes former Death members Sean Reinert ( Cynic ) on drums, Steve DiGiorgio (Control Denied / Autopsy / Sadus) on bass and Bobby Koelble on guitar. Additionally, Cynic live guitarist / vocalist Max Phelps will front Death to All on these 2014 North American dates.

The string of dates has been named the "Swamp Leper Stomp '14" tour and will begin Nov. 14 in Los Angeles, ending Dec. 13 in Tempe, Ariz. Check out the full list of tour dates below!

DECEMBER 20th 2021: Carlos Marin, Il Divo singer, has died at the age of 53. He was born on October 13, 1968 in Russelsheim, Germany and died on December 19, 2021 in Manchester, England, United Kingdom reportedly due to complications from COVID-19. - File Photo by: zz/DP/AAD/STAR MAX/IPx 2015 7/3/15 David Miller, Sebastien Izambard, Carlos Marin and Urs Buhler of Il Divo at the Nordoff Robbins O2 Silver Clef Awards held on July 3, 2015 in London, England, UK.

The multinational vocal quartet Il Divo has announced that its U.S. tour will go on as scheduled beginning Feb. 2, despite the Dec. 19 death of member Carlos Marin . Mexican American baritone Steven LaBrie has been drafted to join the surviving members for the tour, which has been rechristened as a “Greatest Hits” trek and will now be dedicated to Marin’s memory.

The tour had previously been billed as the “For Once in My Life Tour” before being refocused as a career retrospective and tribute to Marin in the wake of his death from COVID-19 just before Christmas.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Steven LaBrie (@stevenlabrie)

Members David Miller, Sebastien Izambard and Urs Buhler released a statement about going on with the show, saying: “Carlos was a larger than life personality, with a rare combination of an incredibly beautiful, God-given voice and absolutely immense talent. His passion, playfulness and sense of humor made for such a magical persona, and his laugh would always lift anyone up. He was loved by millions of fans all over the world and we were lucky and honored to be able to perform with him in our midst for so many years. We’ll deeply miss his playfulness, friendship and brilliant voice. In his honor, we’ll be setting up a Carlos Marin Foundation and will be playing tribute to his singing in our future shows. May everyone remember him for his beautiful soul, his amazing talent and may he forever rest in peace.”

The tour begins as previously scheduled Feb. 2 at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, quickly followed by a date in Los Angeles at the Microsoft Theatre Feb. 6. The 11-date outing wraps up in Miami Feb. 27.

Marin was 53 when he died. After feeling ill while on tour in the U.K., the singer had been hospitalized on Dec. 8 in the Intensive Care Unit of the Manchester Royal Hospital and reportedly had to be intubated before passing away 11 days later.

Il Divo was formed in 2003 by Simon Cowell for his Sony Music Synco Label as a new generation, Three Tenors-style quartet delivering covers of songs halfway between opera and pop. Immaculately turned out in largely Giorgio Armani suits, the group’s singers came from over the world: Bühler was a Swiss tenor, Marín a Germany-born Spaniard, Miller an American tenor and Izambard a French pop singer.

Marin’s ex-wife, Geraldine Larrosa, told a Spanish outlet that Cowell had “personally phoned the hospital and offered to help with anything,” including the offer of moving him to a Spanish hospital. She also said they had been planning to remarry. “During these two years of the pandemic, we’d been together. We were going to marry and it did not happen in the end,” she said. A funeral service was held Dec. 28 in Madrid.

The tour’s newly named guest vocalist, LaBrie, was named artist of the week by Opera Wire in December 2019. The publication noted at that time that LaBrie had had “breakouts with the New Amsterdam Opera and Teatro Nuovo and made major role debuts as well as house debuts with some of the United States’ major regional theaters including the San Diego Opera, Tulsa Opera, and Florida Grand Opera” on his road toward an impending European debut at the the Tiroler Festspiele Erl.

Two Holland America Line crew members die in onboard 'incident' in Bahamas

death tour members

Two Holland America Line crew members died on the line’s Nieuw Amsterdam ship on Friday.

The deaths occurred following an “incident in an engineering space” around 9:20 a.m. while the ship was calling at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, according to a spokesperson for the line.

“All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with our team members’ families at this difficult time,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “The safety, security and welfare of all guests and crew are the company’s absolute priority.”

Nieuw Amsterdam is currently sailing a week-long Eastern Caribbean cruise that departed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper .

“The appropriate authorities were notified, and the cause of the incident is currently being investigated,” the spokesperson added, noting that earlier reports that the crew members died in a fire on board were incorrect.

Holland America is also offering counseling services to team members.

The Cult to Perform as Early Incarnation Death Cult During Select Fall 2023 Shows

Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy will celebrate their early years with shows in Los Angeles and the UK

The Cult to Perform as Early Incarnation Death Cult During Select Fall 2023 Shows

Before Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy achieved mainstream success as The Cult , the duo operated under the name Death Cult, performing a more primitive style of gothic post-punk.

Astbury originally formed the band Southern Death Cult in 1981, before the singer joined forces with Duffy to launch Death Cult in 1983. They would morph into The Cult in 1984, but Astbury and Duffy haven’t forgotten their origins. The duo is reviving the early incarnation of their band for a one-off Death Cult performance on October 23rd at the The Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, followed by a series of shows in the UK.

Cold Cave are set to provide support for the LA gig, with general tickets going on sale Friday (August 18th) at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster . Alternatively, and if the show sells out, you can find tickets via StubHub .

Per a press release, the upcoming gigs will feature “a setlist that spans the three phases of the band, from Southern Death Cult, to Death Cult, and The Cult’s first two albums: Dreamtime (1984) and Love (1985).”

Described as post-punk/deathrock, Death Cult’s sound is a bit murkier and more cryptic than the big stadium-ready bombast Astbury and company injected into The Cult. However, the foundations are there — especially Duffy’s dynamic guitar playing.

DEATH TO ALL Feat. GENE HOGLAN And STEVE DIGIORGIO: March/April 2023 North American Tour Announced

DEATH TO ALL ( DTA ) — which features former members of DEATH celebrating the life and music of Chuck Schuldiner — will embark on a North American tour in March. The trek will kick off on March 2 in Seattle, Washington and will conclude on April 1 in Denver, Colorado. Support on the tour will come from SUFFOCATION and NUKEM .

Tour dates:

Mar. 02 - Seattle, WA @ El Corazon Mar. 04 - Portland, OR @ Hawthorne Theatre Mar. 06 - Sacramento, CA @ Goldfield Trading Post Mar. 08 - Los Angeles, CA @ The Belasco Mar. 09 - Santa Ana, CA @ The Observatory Mar. 11 - San Diego, CA @ Brick By Brick Mar. 12 - Mesa, AZ @ The Nile Theater Mar. 14 - Austin, TX @ Come and Take It Live Mar. 15 - Dallas, TX @ Amplified Live Mar. 16 - Houston, TX @ White Oak Music Hall Mar. 17 - New Orleans, LA @ The House Of Blues Mar. 18 - Tampa, FL @ The Orpheum Mar. 19 - Atlanta, GA @ The Masquerade Mar. 21 - Greensboro, NC @ Hangar 1819 Mar. 22 - Baltimore, MD @ Baltimore Sound Stage Mar. 23 - Philadelphia, PA @ Underground Arts Mar. 25 - Boston, MA @ The Middle East Mar. 26 - Montreal, QC @ Corona Theatre Mar. 27 - Toronto, ON @ The Opera House Mar. 28 - Flint, MI @ The Machine Shop Mar. 29 - Chicago, IL @ House Of Blues Mar. 30 - Minneapolis, MN @ Skyway Theatre Apr. 01 - Denver, CO @ The Summit Music Hall

The current lineup of DEATH TO ALL includes Gene Hoglan (also of TESTAMENT , DARK ANGEL , DETHKLOK ), Steve DiGiorgio ( TESTAMENT , CONTROL DENIED , SADUS ) on bass and Bobby Koelble on guitar. Max Phelps ( CYNIC ),who has been touring with DEATH TO ALL , is once again handling the vocal and second-guitar duties.

In a 2014 interview with Metal Rules , DiGiorgio was asked what DEATH TO ALL means to him. He responded: "Our formulated answer is that it is a tribute memorializing the memory of Chuck . To me, it means getting back with buddies. And you've seen their lineup change a little bit here, we had Paul [ Masvidal ] and Sean [ Reinert ] from CYNIC . We had Shannon Hamm in for a while. And now Gene and Bobby . I've jammed with all these guys over the years. They're pretty much some of the best musicians in the world. At least in my opinion."

He continued: "We did those albums back in the day, and when our cycle was over, and when whoever lasted however long, we went our own ways. Now we're back together again and it's cool, from my point of view, to do music with some of the best, amazing musicians/guys in the world. It's awesome. And we have a lot of fun every night, man, because we all realize that not only did we make a statement 20-something years ago, but here we are 20-something years later in our mid-40s playing that stuff as we did as young men. It's kind of, like, yay us. Because we are only just a few years off of 50 and we're playing this music we did just turning the corner into 20 and we're doing it pretty good. And that's not a brag. The reason is we push each other. Somebody falls a little bit behind and this guy's right behind him. You don't want to let your guard down, because everybody's really good at what they do. And that's what it means to me, man. It means to carry on what we did back then with no idea where we'd be in the future, and here we are doing it with conviction."

Schuldiner died on December 13, 2001 after a battle with pontine glioma, a rare type of brain tumor.

In recent years, DEATH 's storied catalog has undergone a meticulous reissue campaign via Relapse Records .

Relapse released the first-ever fully authorized DEATH tab book, featuring 21 classic songs tabbed out for guitar from the band's entire discography. The book, which includes traditional notation as well as tablature, also comes with a digital download of all tracks.

In a 2011 interview with Bass Musician magazine, DiGiorgio stated about working with Schuldiner : "Sometimes people make good music together, and sometimes they vibe like yin and fucking yang. Chuck is credited with a lot of things in the music world (metal world, of course),but one thing a lot of people don't know much about is how aware he was. What I mean is that he was a good listener. If I thought of a wacky bassline to something he was writing, before I could even try to explain why it came to me, he was already ahead of it and looking for something on the next part. He had a good sense of when to hold me back and when to push me. It was great to have someone, especially the 'main man' of the band not only appreciate what I contributed but also help me find my inner demon to conjure even sicker and more abstract things to play. There really was some math going on in that roiling storm sometimes."

The Cult to Highlight Early Material on Death Cult Fall 2023 Tour

The Cult ’s Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy will honor their post-punk roots with a one-off tour this fall under their pre-fame moniker Death Cult.

The brief run will comprise one Los Angeles show on Oct. 23, with support from darkwave group Cold Cave, as well as a dozen shows in the United Kingdom in November. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday. You can see the full list of dates below.

Formed by Astbury and Duffy in 1983, Death Cult evolved out of Astbury’s previous band Southern Death Cult. The group released a self-titled EP and the single “Gods Zoo” in 1983 before rechristening itself as the Cult in early 1984.

The upcoming tour will honor all three phases of the band, focusing on Southern Death Cult, Death Cult and the Cult’s first two full-length albums: 1984’s Dreamtime and 1985’s Love , which spawned the breakthrough hit “She Sells Sanctuary.”

Angela Chao, McConnell’s sister-in-law, had a blood alcohol level 3 times above legal limit in fatal accident, police say

Angela Chao, a shipping industry CEO and sister-in-law to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, was intoxicated when she drove into a pond and died last month in Texas, according to a law enforcement report released Wednesday.

The investigation by the Blanco County Sheriff’s Office concluded that  Chao’s death  was an “unfortunate accident” and her blood alcohol level was nearly three times the state’s legal limit.

Chao, 50, died the night of Feb. 10 after having dinner with a large group at a ranch near Johnson City, west of Austin. The report describes a frantic scene as friends and deputies tried to pull Chao from her Tesla after she backed it into the pond near a guest lodge on the property.

A friend, Amber Keinan, told detectives that Chao called her at 11:42 p.m. and said the car was in the water and she was trapped inside. The conversation lasted 8 minutes as the car slowly sank.

“Chao told Keinan the water was rising and she was going to die and said ‘I love you,’” the report says. “Chao then said her goodbyes to Keinan.”

This undated photo provided by Foremost Group shows a portrait of Angela Chao, CEO and chair of her family's shipping business, the Foremost Group, and president of her father's philanthropic organization, the Foremost Foundations.

Friends swam to the car while another paddled out with a kayak, according to the report. Someone else called 911 at 11:55 p.m. and remained on the phone for 11 minutes.

When law enforcement officials and firefighters arrived, they went into the water and attempted to enter the Tesla, the report said. They broke the window on the driver’s side, and a deputy felt around until he located Chao’s hand.

Emergency crews pulled her out of the car and brought her to shore, where she was pronounced dead at 1:40 a.m. Feb. 11.

A toxicology test determined that Chao had a blood alcohol concentration level of 0.233 grams per 100 milliliters, above the legal limit in Texas of .08, the report says.

Chao was the chair and CEO of her family’s shipping business, the Foremost Group, and the president of her father’s philanthropic organization, the Foremost Foundation. She lived in Austin, which is about 50 miles east of Blanco County.

Chao was the youngest of six sisters to immigrant parents who moved to the U.S. from China in the late 1950s. Her eldest sibling, Elaine Chao, is married to McConnell and served as transportation secretary under President Donald Trump and labor secretary under President George W. Bush.

“Angela’s name in Chinese sounds like the characters for peace and prosperity,” her father, James S.C. Chao, said in a family statement shortly after her death. “Her absence leaves a void not only in our hearts, but in the Asian-American community.”

Her father was named chairman of Foremost Group following her death. Michael Lee, a former president, became president.

Chao is survived by her husband, father and four sisters.

Here is what we know about the group and their possible motive for the Moscow attack.

ISIL’s Afghanistan branch

The group remains one of the most active affiliates of ISIL and takes its title from an ancient caliphate in the region that once encompassed areas of Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Turkmenistan.

The group emerged from eastern Afghanistan in late 2014 and was made up of breakaway fighters of the Pakistan Taliban and local fighters who pledged allegiance to the late ISIL leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi .

The group has since established a fearsome reputation for acts of brutality.

Murat Aslan, a military analyst and former Turkish army colonel, said ISIL’s Afghanistan affiliate is known for its “radical and tough methodologies”.

“I think their ideology inspires them in terms of selecting targets. First of all, Russia is in Syria and fighting against Daesh [ISIL] like the United States. That means they see such countries as hostile,” Aslan told Al Jazeera.

“They are now in Moscow. Previously they were in Iran, and we will see much more attacks, maybe in other capitals,” he added.

Though its membership in Afghanistan is said to have declined since a peak in about 2018, its fighters still pose one of the greatest threats to the Taliban’s authority in Afghanistan.

Previous attacks by the group

ISKP fighters claimed responsibility for the 2021 attacks outside Kabul airport that left at least 175 civilians dead, killed 13 US soldiers, and many dozens injured.

The ISIL affiliate was previously blamed for carrying out a bloody attack on a maternity ward in Kabul in May 2020 that killed 24 people, including women and infants. In November that same year, the group carried out an attack on Kabul University, killing at least 22 teachers and students.

In September 2022, the group took responsibility for a deadly suicide bombing at the Russian embassy in Kabul.

Last year, Iran blamed the group for two separate attacks on a major shrine in southern Shiraz – the Shah Cheragh – which killed at least 14 people and injured more than 40.

The US claimed that it intercepted communications confirming that the group was preparing to carry out attacks before coordinated suicide bombings in Iran in January this year killed nearly 100 people in the southeastern Iranian city of Kerman. ISKP claimed responsibility for the Kerman attacks.

Why is ISIL attacking Russia?

Defence and security analysts say the group has targeted its propaganda at Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent years over the alleged oppression of Muslims by Russia.

“Russian foreign policy has been one big red flag for ISIS [ISIL],” Michael Kugelman, director of the South Asia Institute at the Washington-based Wilson Center told Al Jazeera. “The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Russian actions in Chechnya, Moscow’s close relationships with the Syrian and Iranian governments, and especially the military campaigns that Russia has waged against ISIS fighters in Syria and — through Wagner Group mercenaries – in parts of Africa.”

All of that has meant that Moscow has become a focus of ISKP’s “extensive propaganda war,” said Amira Jadoon, assistant professor at Clemson University in South Carolina and co-author of, The Islamic State in Afghanistan and Pakistan: Strategic Alliances and Rivalries.

“Russia’s engagement in the global fight against ISIS and its affiliates, especially through its military operations in Syria and its efforts to establish connections with the Afghan Taliban – ISIS-K’s rival – marks Russia as a key adversary for ISIS/ISIS-K,” Jadoon told Al Jazeera.

Syrian and Russian soldiers are seen at a checkpoint near Wafideen camp in Damascus, Syria March 2, 2018. REUTERS/Omar Sanadiki

Should the Moscow attack be “definitely attributed” to ISKP, Jadoon said, the group hopes to win support and advance “its goal to evolve into a terrorist organisation with global influence” by demonstrating that it can launch attacks within Russian territory.

“ISK [ISKP] has consistently demonstrated its ambition to evolve into a formidable regional entity … By directing its aggression towards nations such as Iran and Russia, ISK not only confronts regional heavyweights but also underscores its political relevance and operational reach on the global stage,” Jadoon said.

Kabir Taneja, a fellow at the Strategic Studies Programme of the Observer Research Foundation – a think tank based in New Delhi, India – told Al Jazeera that Russia is seen by ISIL and its affiliates as “a crusading power against Muslims”.

“Russia has been a target for ISIS and not just ISKP from the beginning,” Taneja, author of the book, The ISIS Peril, said.

“ISKP attacked [the] Russian embassy in Kabul in 2022, and over the months, Russian security agencies have upped their efforts to clamp down on pro-ISIS ecosystems both in Russia and around its borders, specifically Central Asia and the Caucusus,” he said.

In early March, Russia’s Federal Security Service, better known as the FSB, said it had thwarted an ISIL plan to attack a Moscow synagogue.

“The most compelling current motivation for ISIS-K to attack Russia is the Taliban factor. The Taliban is a bitter rival of ISIS, and ISIS views Russia as a friend of the Taliban,” said Kugelman.

Moscow’s close relations with Israel are also anathema to ISIL’s ideology, Taneja said.

“So this friction is not new ideologically, but is so tactically,” he told Al Jazeera.

There’s another factor, too: Largely away from the world’s attention, the armed group has regrouped into a formidable force after setbacks in Syria and Iran.

“ISKP in Afghanistan has grown in strength significantly … and it’s not just ISKP, ISIS in its original regions of operations, Syria and Iraq, also sees [an] uptick in operational capabilities,” Taneja said. Today, he added, it is “ideologically powerful even if not politically, tactically or strategically … that powerful any more”.

That poses a challenge for a distracted world, he said.

“How to combat this is the big question at a time when big power competition and global geopolitical churn has put counterterrorism on the back burner,” Taneja added.

How has ISIL responded?

ISKP social media channels are “jubilant” following the attack on Moscow, said Abdul Basit, a senior associate fellow at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Singapore.

“They are celebrating the attack,” Basit told Al Jazeera, adding that supporters are “translating and recirculating the responsibility claim” issued by the ISIL-linked Amaq News Agency.

Basit said that ISIL’s method of operations involves amplifying a propaganda campaign in advance of large-scale attacks and this had been observed in recent anti-Russian messaging. Such attacks “add to the credibility” of armed groups, Basit explained, which then “increases the scope of their funding, recruitment and propaganda”.

More attacks are possible in Russia and elsewhere, he added, given the key role that ISIL recruits of Central Asian origin – particularly Tajiks – played when the group held territory in Syria. They have now returned to the Central Asia region and their intent to carry out attacks has now materialised in capability, Basit said.

Previous attacks in Russia

Moscow and other Russian cities have been the targets of previous attacks.

In 2002, Chechen fighters took more than 900 people hostage in a Moscow theatre, the Dubrovka, demanding the withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya and an end to Russia’s war on the region.

Russian special forces attacked the theatre to end the standoff and 130 people were killed, most suffocated by a gas used by security forces to leave the Chechen fighters unconscious.

The deadliest attack in Russia was the 2004 Beslan school siege which was carried out by members of a Chechen armed group seeking Chechnya’s independence from Russia. The siege killed 334 people, including 186 children.

Islamic State claims members escaped after attacking concert hall

The Islamic State have claimed responsibility for the attack on the Crocus City Hall on the outskirts of Moscow.

The full statement posted on its Telegram account reads:

Islamic State fighters attacked a large gathering of Christians in the city of Krasnogorsk on the outskirts of the Russian capital, Moscow, killing and wounding hundreds and causing great destruction to the place before they withdrew to their bases safely.

It’s now just after 7am in Moscow and this blog is closing here. We’ll be back soon to bring you all the latest news. In the meantime, here are the key developments:

Gunmen opened fire at the 6,200-seat Crocus City Hall in Krasnogorsk near Moscow on Friday evening at a concert for the Russian rock group Piknik .

Sixty people were killed , a spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee said in the early hours of Saturday according to Russian media, and the number may rise . Earlier authorities had said at least 145 were wounded . Ria news agency quoted Moscow governor Andrey Vorobyov as saying 110 adults and five children had been hospitalised, with 60 adults in a serious condition.

Up to five gunmen were believed to be involved in the attack , which was later claimed by Islamic State in a post on Telegram which suggested that the attackers had managed to escape afterwards. Videos released by social media channels close to the security services showed at least two armed men walking into the hall.

The Russian national guard was searching for the attackers , Russian news agencies reported. The Investigative Committee said early Saturday it was too early to say anything about the fate of the attackers.

Videos emerged showing gunmen in tactical gear opening fire with automatic weapons as panicked Russians fled for their lives. One witness told the news agency AFP that as people ran towards emergency exits, “there was a terrible crush” with concert-goers climbing on one another’s heads to get out.

The emergencies ministry said that fire services had helped about 100 people escape through the basement of the concert hall. Tass news agency said that all of the Piknik group had been evacuated safely. Rescue operations were also launched for people trapped on the roof.

President Vladimir Putin was receiving “constant” updates, his spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian news agencies.

Earlier this month, western countries led by the United States had issued terror warnings and told their citizens not to join public gatherings in Russia. On 8 March, the US embassy wrote it was “monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and US citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours”.

Russia did not immediately blame anyone for the attack. Former president Dmitry Medvedev did say, however, that Ukrainian leaders found to be involved would be “destroyed”.

The US presidency called the attack “terrible” and said there was no immediate sign of any link to the conflict in Ukraine. Ukraine’s presidency said Kyiv had “nothing to do” with the attack, while its military intelligence called the incident a Russian “provocation” and charged that Moscow special services were behind it.

Russia tightened security at airports, transport hubs and across the capital – a vast urban area of over 21 million people. All large-scale public events have been cancelled across the country.

Continued from previous post

The earlier attack in Iran demonstrated the group’s “resiliency and indicates that they retain the capability and will to conduct spectacular external operations”.

Russia’s FSB security service said that on 7 March it had prevented an armed attack by the group on a synagogue in the Kaluga region near Moscow .

The FSB said in a statement:

It was established that the militants of an international terrorist organisation are preparing an attack on the parishioners of the synagogue using firearms.

Within hours, the US embassy issued an unusual warning for American citizens to avoid large gatherings and in particular concerts, repeating calls for US citizens to leave Russia.

CNN reporters said they had been told that “since November there has been ‘fairly specific’ intelligence that Isis-K wanted to carry out attacks in Russia … US intelligence warned Russia about it”.

The ISKP, which is a branch of IS mainly based in Afghanistan , has increasingly focused its attention on Russia since the United States left Afghanistan in 2021.

The group was formed in 2015 by members of militant groups, including those from Pakistan and Uzbekistan, and is active in central Asia and Russia . It carried out twin bombings in January in Iran that killed nearly 100 people.

Gen Michael Kurilla , the commander of US Central Command, during testimony to the House armed services committee in early March said:

Isis-K and its allies retain a safe haven in Afghanistan, and they continue to develop their networks in and out of the country. Their goals do not stop there. They have called for attacks globally on anyone not aligned with their extremist ideology, and Taliban efforts to suppress the group have proven insufficient.

Analysis: Islamic State’s claim of responsibility for Moscow shooting

Guardian’s Moscow correspondent Andrew Roth has analysed Islamic State’s claim of responsibility for the Moscow music hall shooting:

Speculation about who carried out the shooting at the Crocus City Hall in Moscow has quickly indicated that the terror attack will have outsized political implications in Russia and abroad.

A claim has surfaced that the attack was carried out by Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) a regional affiliate of the IS terrorist organisation. IS has been implicated in some of Russia’s largest recent terror attacks, including the 2017 bombing in the St Petersburg metro that killed 15 and injured 45.

US intelligence told American news agencies that there’s “no reason to doubt” the IS claims of responsibility.

Russian firefighters and officials have finally entered the auditorium within the Crocus Concert Hall, RIA News reports.

Andrey Vorobyov, the governor of Moscow oblast, said that some pockets of fire still remain in Crocus but that most of the fire had been distinguished.

The roof over the hall collapsed, Vorobyov noted, according to RIA News.

RIA News has also shared a video to Telegram of the passage to Red Square in Moscow being blocked off.

India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi has also strongly condemned the “heinous terrorist attack in Moscow” , tweeting the country “stands in solidarity with the government and the people of the Russian Federation”.

We strongly condemn the heinous terrorist attack in Moscow. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. India stands in solidarity with the government and the people of the Russian Federation in this hour of grief. — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) March 23, 2024

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has strongly condemned and denounced the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall.

Posting to social media, the Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed “the Kingdom’s sincere condolences and sincere sympathy to the families of the deceased and the government and people of the Russian Federation” after the “painful incident”.

Search continues for attackers

It was reported earlier by Reuters that the fate of the attackers was unclear, as firefighters battled the massive blaze at the concert venue, and emergency services evacuated hundreds of people while parts of the venue’s roof collapsed.

A grainy picture was published by some Russian media reportedly of two of the alleged attackers in a white car .

The search for the attackers reportedly continues but Russian authorities are yet to comment on any developments.

Islamic State said earlier that its fighters attacked on the outskirts of Moscow, “killing and wounding hundreds and causing great destruction to the place before they withdrew to their bases safely”. The statement gave no further detail.

Why would ISIS be attacking Russia ?

The attack by ISIS-K in Russia on Friday is being described as a dramatic escalation, according to Reuters.

Experts have said the group has opposed Russian president Vladimir Putin in recent years.

For some background, Putin changed the course of the Syrian civil war by intervening in 2015, supporting president Bashar al-Assad against the opposition and Islamic State.

Colin Clarke of Soufan Center, a Washington-based research group, said:

ISIS-K has been fixated on Russia for the past two years, frequently criticizing Putin in its propaganda.

ISIS-K, in full is Islamic State Khorasan.

The group is named after an old term for the region that included parts of Iran, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan , and emerged in eastern Afghanistan in late 2014 , quickly establishing a reputation for extreme brutality, as per Reuters.

There is also a Caucasus branch of ISIS.

The broader Islamic State group has claimed deadly attacks across the Middle East, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Europe , the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

We will have a more in-depth explainer coming shortly.

Investigations underway at Crocus City Hall

Russia’s investigative committee has published footage of investigators working at the scene after the terrorist attack at the Crocus City Hall, on the western edge of Moscow.

The unknown people who carried out the terrorist attack in Crocus were armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles, RIA News is reporting.

Here are screenshots of the video released by Russia’s investigative committee on Saturday.

Investigators from the Investigative Committee of Russia together with the operational units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the FSB, work on actions at the scene after a terrorist attack on the building of the Crocus City Hall.

RIA News has shared a full statement from the Russian Investigative Committee regarding updates to the terrorist attack in Crocus:

Investigators, criminologists and experts from the Investigative Committee of Russia, together with the operational units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the FSB, continue investigative actions at the scene of the incident.

The bodies of the dead are being examined. It has been previously established that more than 60 people died as a result of the terrorist attack. Unfortunately, the number of victims may increase.

Material evidence, including weapons and ammunition, is confiscated from the crime scene, all necessary examinations are ordered and carried out, including genetic, ballistic, and fingerprint examinations.

CCTV footage is being confiscated and studied.

Putin wishes victims ‘speedy recovery’, deputy PM says

Russia’s Tass state news agency is reporting that Putin has wished all those injured in the emergency at Crocus City Hall a speedy recovery and conveyed his gratitude to the doctors.

Russia’s deputy prime minister, Tatiana Golikova reportedly told Tass of Putin’s remarks, which are the first comments the Russian president has made so far about the terror attack.

At least 60 dead, Russia’s Investigative Committee says

Russia’s Investigative Committee said on Saturday that more than 60 people had been killed in the attack on the concert near Moscow, according to Reuters.

Russian state news agency RIA on Saturday quoted a spokesperson for the country’s Investigative Committee as saying it was too early to say anything about the fate of the attackers .

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said it was a “bloody terrorist attack” that the entire world should condemn, according to AFP.

Zakharova wrote on Telegram earlier:

The entire world community must condemn this despicable crime!

French president Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack on Friday at a concert hall near Moscow, calling it a “terrorist attack”, according to Reuters.

Macron, in a statement, said he “firmly condemns this terrorist attack, claimed by the Islamic State”.

He said in the statement that France stands in solidarity with the victims of the shooting.

The US has intelligence confirming the Islamic State’s claim taking responsibility for the attack, according to Reuters. The agency cites an unnamed US official:

The official said the United States had warned Russia in recent weeks about the possibility of an attack. ‘We did warn the Russians appropriately, ’ said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, without providing any additional details. At least 40 people were killed and 145 wounded on Friday when camouflage-clad gunmen opened fire with automatic weapons on concertgoers near Moscow in one of the deadliest attacks on Russia in decades. Islamic State, the militant group that once sought control over swathes of Iraq and Syria, claimed responsibility for the attack, the group’s Amaq agency said on Telegram. The death toll made it one of the worst attacks on Russia since the 2004 Beslan school siege, when Islamist militants took more than 1,000 people hostage, including hundreds of children.

The death toll has risen to 62, Russia’s Baza news outlet has reported based on preliminary information. The Guardian has not confirmed the number and will be watching for updates from the health ministry.

MOSCOW (AP) — Four men accused of staging the Russia concert hall attack that killed more than 130 people appeared before a Moscow court Sunday on terrorism charges showing signs of severe beatings. One appeared to be barely conscious during the hearing.

Court statements said two of the suspects accepted their guilt in the assault, though the men’s condition raised questions about whether they were speaking freely. There had been conflicting reports in Russian media outlets that said three or all four men admitted culpability.

The investigators charged Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, 32; Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, 30; Shamsidin Fariduni, 25; and Mukhammadsobir Faizov, 19, with committing a terrorist attack resulting in the death of others. The offense carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Moscow’s Basmanny District Court ordered that the men, all of whom were identified in the media as citizens of Tajikistan, be held in custody until May 22 pending investigation and trial.

Russian media had reported that the men were tortured during interrogation by the security services, and Mirzoyev, Rachabalizoda and Fariduni showed signs of heavy bruising, including swollen faces.

Rachabalizoda also had a heavily bandaged ear. Russian media said Saturday that one of the suspects had his ear cut off during interrogation. The Associated Press couldn’t verify the report or the videos purporting to show this.

The fourth suspect, Faizov, was brought to court from a hospital in a wheelchair and sat with his eyes closed throughout the proceedings. He was attended by medics while in court, where he wore a hospital gown and trousers and was seen with multiple cuts.

Court officials said Mirzoyev and Rachabalizoda admitted guilt for the attack after being charged.

The hearings came as Russia observed a national day of mourning for the attack Friday on the suburban Crocus City Hall concert venue that killed at least 137 people.

The attack, which has been claimed by an affiliate of the Islamic State group, was the deadliest on Russian soil in years.

Russian authorities arrested the four suspected attackers Saturday, with seven more people detained on suspicion of involvement in the attack, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an address to the nation Saturday night. He sought to tie the attack to Ukraine and claimed the assailants were captured while fleeing there. Kyiv has firmly denied involvement.

Events at cultural institutions were canceled Sunday, flags were lowered to half-staff and television entertainment and advertising were suspended, according to state news agency RIA Novosti. A steady stream of people added to a makeshift memorial near the burned-out concert hall, creating a huge mound of flowers.

“People came to a concert, some people came to relax with their families, and any one of us could have been in that situation. And I want to express my condolences to all the families that were affected here and I want to pay tribute to these people,” Andrey Kondakov, one of the mourners who came to lay flowers at the memorial, told AP.

“It is a tragedy that has affected our entire country,” kindergarten employee Marina Korshunova said. “It just doesn’t even make sense that small children were affected by this event.” Three children were among the dead.

Rescuers continued to search the damaged building and the death toll rose as more bodies were found as family and friends of some of those still missing waiting for news. Moscow’s Department of Health said Sunday it had begun identifying the bodies of those killed via DNA testing, saying the process would take at least two weeks.

Igor Pogadaev was desperately seeking any details about his wife, Yana Pogadaeva, who went to the attack concert. The last he heard from her was when she sent him two photos from the Crocus City Hall music venue.

After Pogadaev saw the reports of gunmen opening fire on concertgoers, he rushed to the site, but couldn’t find her in the numerous ambulances or among the hundreds of people who had made their way out of the venue.

“I went around, searched, I asked everyone, I showed photographs. No one saw anything, no one could say anything,” Pogadaev told AP in a video message.

He watched flames bursting out of the building as he made frantic calls to a hotline for relatives of the victims, but received no information.

As the death toll mounted Saturday, Pogodaev scoured hospitals in the Russian capital and the Moscow region, looking for information on newly admitted patients.

His wife wasn’t among the 182 reported injured, nor on the list of 60 victims authorities had already identified, he said.

The Moscow region’s branch of the Emergency Ministry posted a video Sunday showing equipment dismantling the damaged music venue to give rescuers access.

Putin has called the attack “a bloody, barbaric terrorist act” and said Russian authorities captured the four suspects as they were trying to escape to Ukraine through a “window” prepared for them on the Ukrainian side of the border.

Russian media broadcast videos that apparently showed the detention and interrogation of the suspects, including one who told the cameras he was approached by an unidentified assistant to an Islamic preacher via a messaging app and paid to take part in the raid.

Putin didn’t mention IS in his speech to the nation, and Kyiv accused him and other Russian politicians of falsely linking Ukraine to the assault to stoke fervor for Russia’s fight in Ukraine, which recently entered its third year .

U.S. intelligence officials said they had confirmed the IS affiliate’s claim.

“ISIS bears sole responsibility for this attack. There was no Ukrainian involvement whatsoever,” National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in a statement.

The U.S. shared information with Russia in early March about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow, and issued a public warning to Americans in Russia, Watson said.

The raid was a major embarrassment for Putin and happened just days after he cemented his grip on the country for another six years in a vote that followed the harshest crackdown on dissent since the Soviet times.

Some commentators on Russian social media questioned how authorities, who have relentlessly suppressed any opposition activities and prosecuted critics, failed to prevent the attack despite the U.S. warnings.

IS, which fought against Russia during its intervention in the Syrian civil war, has long targeted Russia. In a statement posted by the group’s Aamaq news agency, the IS Afghanistan affiliate said that it had attacked a large gathering of “Christians” in Krasnogorsk.

The group issued a new statement Saturday on Aamaq, saying the attack was carried out by four men who used automatic rifles, a pistol, knives and firebombs. It said the assailants fired at the crowd and used knives to kill some concertgoers, casting the raid as part of the Islamic State group’s ongoing war with countries that it says are fighting against Islam.

In October 2015, a bomb planted by IS downed a Russian passenger plane over Sinai, killing all 224 people on board, most of them Russian vacationers returning from Egypt.

The group, which operates mainly in Syria and Iraq but also in Afghanistan and Africa, also has claimed responsibility for several attacks in Russia’s volatile Caucasus and other regions in past years. It recruited fighters from Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union.
