Overview of hungary.

A landlocked country in Eastern Europe, Hungary shares its borders with Austria, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia. Its population of almost 10 million people speak mainly Hungarian; the country’s only official language. Budapest, Hungary’s capital and largest city, is a top European travel destination for its rich history and beauty; a large portion of it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Budapest contains many impressive architectural monuments, including Buda Castle, the Baroque-style palace complex located on medieval-era Castle Hill, the Great Synagogue, the largest in Europe, and Fisherman’s Bastion, a 20 th century, Romantic inspired structure, which overlooks the Danube river and provides magnificent views of the city. Visitors to Budapest can dine on Hungary’s national dish, Goulash, in its buzzy new restaurants, and relax in one of its hundreds of public baths; a legacy of the Ottoman occupation. Thermal springs proliferate throughout the country, which boasts the largest thermal spa complex on the continent, as well as Lake Balaton; the largest lake in central Europe. Hungary signed the Schengen agreement in 2003, becoming part of the Schengen area in 2007.

Where to Apply

Applications for Schengen visas to Hungary should be submitted at either a Hungarian Consulate or a visa application center that has a relationship with Hungary.

Ideally, you will lodge your application in the country where you legally reside/hold a residence permit.

If you must apply through a Hungarian Consulate/Embassy or visa application center located in a country where you do not legally reside, you must have a valid reason for doing so. Valid reasons include that you are legally staying in another country (on a valid visa/ permit), and that the consulate within the country has accepted your reasons for applying through them and has chosen to process your application.

In countries where there is no Hungarian consular presence, applications may be lodged via the consulate of a Schengen state representing Hungarian consular interests.

In countries where there is neither a Hungarian consular presence nor a Schengen state representing Hungarian consulate interests, you may apply through any Hungarian Consulate located outside the Schengen area.

Processing Time for Hungarian Schengen Visa Fee

The Hungarian Schengen visa processing time is generally 15 days , although it can take up to 45 days in certain cases.

If your visa was approved:

Collect your visa and make sure the information it contains is valid and complete.

If your visa was denied:

If you receive a Schengen visa rejection for Hungary, you (or your legal representative) have the right to an appeal within 8 days of receiving your rejection.

Begin this process by picking up your standard issued-visa refusal form, which describes why your request was denied. Your letter of rejection should explain the detailed steps of the appeal process, including where to send it.

Your appeal is decided by the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which renders a decision 15 days after receiving the appeal.

You should submit your Schengen visa appeal in writing in either Hungarian or an EU official language (if you choose to submit in a non-E.U. language, you must include an official translation of your appeal). Your appeal should be signed either by you personally or someone who is legally authorized to sign for you.

Please note, you must also submit an appeal fee of 30 euros, which is non-refundable regardless of the outcome of the appeal (positive or negative).

Finally, once you obtain your Schengen Visa for Hungary, please note the following:

Your visa may be revoked if you do not notify the Hungarian Consulate/visa application center of any changes to your trip itinerary that occur after you have submitted your application.

Being approved for a Hungarian visa does not guarantee you entry to either Hungary or the general Schengen area – you can still be refused entry to both places upon arrival.

Alternatively, you may have to show additional documents regarding your finances or accommodation in order to enter Hungary/the Schengen area.

Safety and Security

Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

Terrorism: Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad, including in Europe. For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Crime: Although Hungary is generally a safe place to visit, you should use caution and stay alert. Be especially careful in crowded tourist areas, train stations, buses, trams, and metros.

Passports, cash, and credit cards are favorite targets of thieves. The Embassy regularly receives reports of pickpocketing on the trains between Budapest and Vienna, so please be especially mindful of your belongings when traveling this route. There have been some instances in Budapest where U.S. citizens were overcharged exorbitant prices for food, beverages, or taxi services. Always verify the cost before making a purchase.

There have been incidents, although rare, where U.S. citizens were unknowingly drugged. Do not accept food or drink from anyone but a server. Additionally, the Embassy has received reports of racially motivated assaults. Please report all crimes to the local police. In an emergency dial 112 for help and contact the U.S. Embassy for follow-up assistance.

General tips to avoid becoming a victim of crime:

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Do not walk alone at night.
  • Be vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.
  • Stay alert in crowded locations frequented by tourists.
  • Always keep your belongings secure.
  • Do not accept food or drink from anyone but a server.

Victims of Crime: Hungarian authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes committed in Hungary. Report crimes to the local police by calling 112 .

U.S. citizen victims of violent crime and sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance. See our webpage about help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Provide a list of local attorneys
  • Provide our information on victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Demonstrations: Political gatherings and protests occur frequently in Hungary, mostly in Budapest. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events. Ethnic nationalist groups have gained popularity in Hungary in the past years, in some cases advocating intolerance towards migrants and minorities, including Jews, Roma, and LGBTI+ individuals. Although these far-right groups do not engage in violence and are not explicitly anti-United States, you should avoid public demonstrations and confrontations with their members.

  • Demonstrations can be unpredictable, avoid areas around protests and political rallies.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.
  • In a few instances where demonstrations have turned violent, authorities have used riot police to control crowds.

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

International Financial Scams: See the  Department of State  and   FBI webpages for information.

Tourism: The tourism industry is generally well-regulated and rules enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is generally available throughout the country. Outside of major metropolitan centers, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned.  Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

  • Always carry your passport with you in Hungary. Local police may require you to show documentation to establish your identity upon request. Hungarian police may take you into custody if you attempt to prove your identity with documents other than a passport.
  • Hungary has a zero-tolerance policy for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Penalties are severe, including significant jail time.

Some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information.

Special Circumstances regarding Banking and Customs:

  • Travelers’ checks are not universally accepted in Hungary. ATMs are readily available.
  • It is not possible to cash personal checks in Hungary without a local bank account, which requires residency.
  • Western Union is the most prevalent international money transfer company and has many locations throughout Hungary. You must have photo identification to receive a wire transfer.
  • Visit the National Tax and Customs Administration of Hungary for information about import and export of potentially restricted items.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers: See the following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report – see country report
  • Hajj Fact Sheet for Travelers
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTQI+ Travelers: There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTQI+ events in Hungary. However, organizers may encounter disruptive behavior by far-right wing extremists at events supporting the LGBTQI+ community.

See our LGBTQI+ Travel Information page and section 6 of our Human Rights Report for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities: The law in Hungary prohibits discrimination against persons with physical or mental disabilities, and the law is enforced. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is as prevalent as in the United States. The most common types of accessibility issues may include accessible facilities and ease of movement. Expect accessibility to be limited in public transportation, lodging, and general infrastructure. There can be a significant difference in accessibility between Budapest and the rest of the country.

For emergency services in Hungary dial:

  • 104 for Ambulance Services
  • 107 for the Police
  • 105 for the Fire Department
  • 112 for English-Speaking Emergency Responders (All Types of Emergencies)

The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Ambulance services are widely available in Hungary, but training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards. All ambulances may not be equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment.

Adequate health facilities are available in the capital and other major cities, but health care in rural areas may be below U.S. standards. Medical staff may speak little or no English. Generally, in public hospitals only minimal staff is available overnight in non-emergency wards. Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, even in the larger cities, with hospital-based care only available through government institutions.

Some hospitals and doctors require payment “up front” prior to service or admission. Credit card payment is not always available. Some private clinics and hospitals may require advance payment or proof of adequate insurance before admitting a patient. Travelers should make efforts to obtain complete information on billing, pricing, and proposed medical procedures before agreeing to any medical care. Patients bear all costs for transfer to or between hospitals.

We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage overseas. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas. We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Prescription Medication: Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the government of Hungary to ensure the medication is legal in Hungary. Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription. Prescription and over-the-counter medicines are widely available at pharmacies.

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy: If you are considering traveling to have a child through use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or surrogacy, please see our ART and Surrogacy Abroad page . Hungarian law forbids surrogacy arrangements.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: Roadside assistance, including medical and other services, is available. Dial 112 to speak to English-speaking emergency operators.

Highways and urban roads are generally in good condition. As in most European countries, you must pay a toll to use Hungary’s highways. Payments must be made either at a gas station or online .

  • Areas under construction are not always adequately marked.
  • Be on the alert when driving in rural areas. Rural roads are often narrow and poorly lit.
  • Pedestrians, tractors, and farm animals often share the use of rural roads.
  • Train crossings are not always well-designated.

Additional information on road conditions is available from “ Útinform ” at +36-1-336-2400.

Traffic Laws: Hungary has zero tolerance for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs. Prison sentences for DUI violations or accidents caused by impaired drivers are severe.

  • Police often conduct routine roadside checks and administer breath-analysis tests.
  • Police stop vehicles regularly to check documents.
  • Use of hand-held cell phones while driving is not permitted.
  • Car seats are required for infants.
  • Children under the age of 12 may not sit in the front seat.
  • Seat belt use is mandatory.
  • You can drive in Hungary with a valid U.S. driver’s license for one year as long as you have a certified Hungarian translation of the license attached. After one year of residence, you must obtain a Hungarian driver’s license.
  • International driver’s permits (IDP) issued by the American Automobile Association (AAA) are acceptable when used with a valid state driver’s license.

Hungarian police issue traffic violations in the form of a postal check that reflects the amount of the fine. You may pay the fines at any Hungarian post office. Police will confiscate the passport of a person who chooses to contest the fine and issue the person an “invitation letter” to appear at the police station to resolve the dispute. Police will return the passport after resolution and/or payment of the fine.

Public Transportation: Public transportation in Budapest is excellent. Budapest’s tram, subway, and bus service are reliable. Find more information online: Budapest Public Transport . Public transportation outside of Budapest is not as dependable.

  • To avoid being a subject to on-the-spot fines in public transportation, you must follow rules for purchasing and properly validating your ticket.
  • Taxis in Budapest are plentiful and generally inexpensive. All taxis are yellow, marked accordingly, and should have meters. The Embassy urges all travelers to insist on using a metered taxi, and to avoid entering into agreements with taxi drivers to an unmetered fare.
  • Hungary’s train service is generally reliable. The Embassy regularly receives reports of pickpocketing on the trains between Budapest and Vienna. Be mindful of your belongings when traveling this route.

Aviation Safety Oversight: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the Government of Hungary’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Hungary’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the FAA’s safety assessment page .

Hungary visa application requirements

  • An application form. Luckily, it is available online for free access. So, download it, fill it out, check whether the information filled fully coincides with other documents that you provide (mind that, in the case of any misprinting or mistake, you risk being denied), and sign the form.
  • Your ID. It must not be issued more than 10 years ago and must not expire within 3 months or less after you intend to leave Hungary. Also, make sure there are 2 blank pages as a minimum otherwise there will be no space to put stamps to allow you to enter & leave the country. Sure, if you need a new ID, you must apply for it in advance, thus, start preparing documents for your trip to Hungary beforehand. There is always a risk that something will go wrong.

In all the cases mentioned above, the following documents for identification will need to be presented:

  • A government issued ID card, both original and a photocopy

Secondly, book an appointment for the interview before submitting your application. Once your appointment is booked, and you have submitted the application, you will need to visit the Embassy of Hungary at New Delhi for your appointment

You will need to present the original and photocopies of all the required documents at the time of the appointment.

Being ranked amongst the top tourist destinations in the world, Hungary is a nation that will astonish you with its culture, beauty and arts. The capital city of Budapest is known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Situated on either side of the River Danube, the city is just one of the reasons why people get a Hungary tourist visa and visit the country.

hungary tourist visa

People travel to Hungary for various purposes ranging from tourism to business to even work there. If, however, you are travelling for the purpose of tourism, a tourist permit is an endorsement you would require. Also known as the Hungary Schengen tourist visa , this is issued for a number of activities such as sightseeing, taking part in leisure or adventure activities, and other forms of tourism. Being a type of the Schengen, this is granted for a maximum stay duration of 90 days in a 180-day period and can be available in the single-entry form, double-entry form, or even multiple-entry form.

To apply for the tourist category, you must do it offline. However, before starting the application, you must ensure that you are eligible to travel to the country as a tourist. After that, you may proceed to make the application as follows -

  • Proceed to procure all the documents necessary for this particular category.
  • Visit the website of the Hungarian Visa Application Centre (VAC) or the embassy and download the application form. Please note that the application form is the same for all the short term categories. You must simply specify the purpose as “tourism”.
  • Fill in the Hungary tourist visa application form and take a print out of the completed form.
  • Book an appointment for the application submission. You may choose one of the VACs or the Embassy/Consulate-general of Hungary situated in India. You can book an appointment by calling or using the online portal of the VAC, or by emailing the Embassy/consulate. Due to the high volume of applications, it is mandatory to get a prior booking for the appointment.
  • With the documents, application form and fees, visit the respective appointment centre in person. You may send a third party in certain situations that are mentioned below.
  • You will have to provide your biometrics and pay the fees as well. In some cases, you may be subjected to an interview with a consular officer.

Kindly note that if you have submitted your biometrics for any Schengen category visa for any country in the past 5 years, your biometrics are stored in the Schengen VIS (Visa Information System). In this case, you do not have to submit them again, and as a result, you do not have to attend the appointment in person. You may authorize a third party to submit it for you. However, you would be required to supply them with an authorization letter.

Also, note that you must apply at the VAC that has jurisdiction of your state of residence. Also, if you are applying directly at the embassy/consulate, residents of Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Pondicherry, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli must apply to the Consulate-general of Hungary in Mumbai. For the rest of India, you may apply at the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi.

Please ensure that you submit only genuine documents and true information. Submission of fake documents or providing false information can lead to an automatic Schengen visa refusal. A rejected entry permit is considered a black mark on your travel history.

As mentioned previously, before starting the application for the Hungary tourist visa from India , you must ensure that you meet the eligibility conditions. The following are the conditions under which you may apply for the tourist category.

  • You must be living in India while you are making the application. If you are residing in a residence permit in any foreign nation, you may apply it from the respective country.
  • You must possess a valid passport as per the requirements.
  • Your primary reason for the visit must be to take part in tourism activities.
  • You must possess sufficient funds to cover your expenses during the stay in the country.
  • You must apply for the permit only if -
  • Hungary is your only destination, or
  • Hungary is one of your multiple Schengen destinations, in which case you will be spending the majority of the time here, or,
  • If there is no main destination, Hungary must be your port of entry.

As per the Hungary tourist visa requirements , the following are the documents you must submit to make a successful application. However, note that there may be slight changes to this depending on the traveller’s eligibility.

  • A valid passport-
  • It should consist of at least 2 blank pages.
  • It should not be older than 10 years.
  • It should be valid for at least 6 months from the date of travel.
  • Old passports, if any, are to be attached.
  • A complete application form duly signed
  • A covering letter -
  • This must include the applicant's details as well as that of the visit.
  • It should clearly mention the source of funds.
  • It should clearly state the purpose and duration of the visit.
  • It should be signed by the applicant and addressed to the Embassy of Hungary.
  • Travel itinerary/documents -
  • A detailed travel itinerary
  • Round trip flight booking

Kindly note that you must carry all the original documents for your appointment. However, you are requested to only submit photocopies of certain documents that you will not receive back. Also, you may be required to translate the documents to Hungarian language and get it certified.

The Hungary tourist visa photo specifications are as follows -

The time taken to process the tourist visa for Hungary from India depends fairly on the entry type of the permit, the volume of applications and so on. In normal cases, the visa will be processed within 15 working days. However, these may increase up to 30 days in special cases, and can even take up to 60 days in extreme cases. Due to this uncertainty, it is suggested that you apply for the permit well in advance. You must apply at least 15 days before the day of travel, but not more than 3 months prior.

The total fees for this application depend on a few variables such as the number of entries, the biometric charges, as well as any other service charges. The fees can also vary depending on the foreign exchange rates without prior notice. As a result, it is necessary to check the exact amount before starting the process.

Upon successfully submitting the application and fees, your application will begin processing. If the embassy requires any additional verification, you may be required to attend an interview. If your application has been approved, you may collect the passport and visa directly from the VAC or embassy/consulate. You can also have the VAC deliver it to you for a specific fee.

Please note that even if you submit the application at a VAC, they have no control over the processing and decision of the application. This power is solely in the hands of the embassy or consulate.

While you await a response, you may check the status of your application. You can do this by visiting https://www.vfsvisaonline.com/Global-Passporttracking and providing your application reference number and date of birth. You may also contact the respective travel agency to have them track it for you. Please ensure that you do not contact the embassy or consulate directly as they do not provide information on this topic.

On receiving the tourist permit, you must keep in mind the following key points. These are to ensure that you have a hassle-free travelling experience in Hungary.

  • Keep a note of the expiry date, duration of allowed stay, and the number of entries mentioned on the visa sticker.
  • Carry all the documents without fail while travelling. You will also need to show copies of the documents required for the application at the entry port.
  • Ensure that you travel to Hungary within 6 months of the issue date. After this date, you will not be allowed to travel as the permit will become invalid.
  • While you are in the country, carry a copy of your travel documents with you. Also, ensure that you maintain the original documents safe.
  • While you are on a tourist permit, you are not allowed to take part in work activities. However, you are allowed to engage in other activities that fall under the Schengen short term category such as visiting friends, take up voluntary charity work, etc.
  • You will not be able to extend the tourist visa under any normal circumstances.
  • Due to the fact that this is a Schengen type, you are allowed to visit any of the other Schengen nations. However, if you receive the Limited Territorial Validity (LTV) type, you can only visit the countries that are specifically listed on the sticker.

Since this permit allows a stay of only 90 days, there are no specific medical requirements as such. However, you are still expected to submit medical travel insurance. In either case, it is suggested that you get a medical checkup done before travelling to a foreign nation.

Can I convert my Hungary Schengen Tourist Visa into a work permit?

No, you cannot convert one type of Schengen short term visa into a resident permit. The Schengen C category is non-extendable and not convertible. As a result, you must leave or apply for a work permit after you go back to your home country. Also, note that you cannot work while you are on a tourist category.

Can I travel to another Schengen country on a Hungary tourist visa?

Yes, you are free to travel to any of the Schengen regions with this permit. However, note that if you have an LTV category, you can only travel to those countries that are specifically listed on your visa sticker. Also, note that possessing a Schengen tourist permit does not grant you automatic entry. You will still need to meet the individual conditions of the states.

Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card: A secured card with rewards that can be used to cover travel purchases

Photo of Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card on a blue and green abstract background

Our take: The Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card offers a cost-effective approach to building credit and earning rewards with its lack of annual and foreign transaction fees. Use it to help you climb the rungs of the credit score ladder.

Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card Overview

Card Type: Secured

The Bank of America Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card offers a budget-friendly option for individuals looking to build or improve their credit. With a $0 annual fee and no foreign transaction fees, it provides a cost-effective way to manage your finances while earning rewards. Since the card is designed for cardholders who want to boost their credit score or establish a credit history, it’s a card with few frills or perks: You won’t get a welcome bonus or 0% introductory APR on balance transfers or purchases.

To open a card, you must make a minimum security deposit of $200 and a maximum of $5,000. Typically, with a secured card , your security deposit determines your credit limit. The security deposit acts as collateral if you default on your payments.

According to Bank of America, your maximum credit limit is calculated based on your security deposit, income, and creditworthiness. The issuer will also regularly review your account to decide whether you’re eligible to get your security deposit back.

Who is the Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card good for?

The BoA Travel Rewards Secured is good for someone who wants to use the card for travel, especially for international travel as it doesn’t charge a foreign transaction fee.

Who shouldn’t get the BoA Travel Rewards Secured?

If your interest is cash-back, this card isn’t a good fit for you as points are only worth .6 cents each for cash vs 1 cent each for travel.

Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card: Points

With the Travel Rewards Secured, there’s not much to remember when it comes to rewards: You’ll earn a flat rewards rate of 1.5 points for every $1 you spend on all purchases.

The card does not offer a new customer bonus.

How to redeem Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card points

When you’re ready to redeem your rewards, you’ll get less flexibility than you would with a traditional travel credit card. You won’t be able to transfer them to a hotel or airline partner or use them to book flights or hotel stays through a travel portal. Instead, you can use points to cover past travel purchases, get a statement credit, or purchase gift cards.

Get a travel statement credit

To redeem points, you have the option to receive a statement credit to cover qualifying travel and dining expenses such as airlines, hotels, and car rentals, incurred within the last 12 months.

However, this statement credit is limited to the most recent 2,500 qualifying transactions in these categories. With this redemption method, the exchange rate is straightforward: One point equals one cent.

Earn cash-back and buy gift cards

You can turn your points into real money by getting a check, having them electronically deposited into your Bank of America® checking or savings account, or getting them credited to an eligible Cash Management Account® with Merrill.

Keep in mind that by redeeming points for cash, you won’t be maximizing their value. One point is valued at 0.6 cents, meaning 2,500 points will only get you $15. As for gift cards, their redemption value can vary.

Rates and fees

  • Purchase APR: 28.24% variable
  • Annual fee: $0
  • Foreign transaction fee: None

Additional benefits

Free FICO score. Through online and mobile banking, you can access your FICO score, which is updated monthly, for free.

Credit cards similar to Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card

If covering travel expenses with rewards isn’t your priority, explore the Capital One Quicksilver Secured—a card closely mirroring the Travel Rewards card. The choice boils down to personal preference: Do you want a travel-focused Bank of America card or a cash-back Capital One card?

Capital One Quicksilver Secured Cash Rewards Credit Card vs. Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card

The Capital One Quicksilver Secured Cash Rewards Credit Card and Bank of America Travel Rewards are similar cards with identical rewards structures, minimum opening deposits, and fees. With the Quicksilver, you’ll pay no annual or foreign transaction fees and earn 1.5% cash back on every purchase.

Similar to the Travel Rewards Card, you’ll need to make a $200 minimum deposit to open a Quicksilver card. By making on-time and in full payments on your Quicksilver card, you could get back your deposit and graduate to an unsecured Quicksilver card. Plus, every six months, Capital One will automatically consider you for a credit limit increase without having to put any extra money down.

While the Travel Rewards Card emphasizes rewards redemption for travel-related expenses, Quicksilver rewards can primarily be redeemed for cash-back or gift cards.

Is the Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card right for you?

The Bank of America Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card is best suited for those who don’t need lots of bells and whistles and are focused on establishing or improving their credit scores. The card also has a low barrier to entry: You’ll just need to make a minimum security deposit of $200 to open a card.

This card, however, is likely not a good fit if you’re not interested in credit building and want a flashier travel credit card with benefits like a hefty welcome bonus and luxurious perks.

Frequently asked questions

Is it hard to get a bank of america® travel rewards secured credit card.

While Bank of America does not disclose what credit score you need to qualify for the Travel Rewards Secured card, since it’s a secured card meant for credit building, you won’t need a good credit score to be eligible.

What is the credit limit for a Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card?

The credit limit for the Bank of America Travel Rewards Secured card is determined by the security deposit, which can be as low as $200 and as high as $5,000.

Can I get denied for a secured credit card with Bank of America?

Though secured credit cards are intended for credit building, Bank of America may reject some secured card applicants due to a lack of credit history, a poor credit score, bankruptcy, and more.

Please note that card details are accurate as of the publish date, but are subject to change at any time at the discretion of the issuer. Please contact the card issuer to verify rates, fees, and benefits before applying.

China welcomes hungary's visa facilitation measures: fm spokesperson.

China welcomes a move by Hungary to facilitate visa for Chinese citizens visiting the country for investment and cooperation purposes, and welcomes visa facilitation by more countries, a spokesperson of China's Foreign Ministry (FM) said on Tuesday.

The announcement by Hungary related to issuing 5-year, multiple-entry visas for Chinese citizens on business trips is another example of the high-level development of China-Hungary ties, and China welcomes the move," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told a routine press conference on Tuesday in Beijing.

Wang noted that bilateral cooperation have yielded fruitful results under the China-Hungary comprehensive strategic partnership.

After China implemented a pilot policy which include visa-free entry for Hungarian tourists and business people, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto recently announced that Hungary would issue long-term visas to Chinese citizens visiting the country for investment and business cooperation.

"We believe these new measures will further strengthen people-to-people exchanges, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, and promote high-level development of the bilateral ties," Wang said. "China also welcomes more countries to offer visa facilitation for Chinese citizens to boost cross-border travel and cooperation."

China announced last week that it will adopt a visa-free policy for Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium and Luxembourg on a trial basis, starting on March 14.

This followed visa-free entry trial for ordinary passport holders from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia, effective from December 1, 2023.
