On the Orion ship, Archer and Harrad-Sar drink alcohol and watch three slave girls dancing. He then offers them the coordinates of a planet with a lot of magnesite and "gives" the slave girls (named Navaar, D'Nesh, and Maras) to the crew. Malcolm shows the three to their quarters, but he's a bit hot and bothered and has trouble focusing.

While they travel to the coordinates, the men on the Enterprise become very distracted by the Orion women and they start behaving aggressively (much to T'Pol's disdain), while the women get headaches and become lethargic. At one point, Malcolm and Travis try to turn themselves off by exercising, and when treating Hoshi in sickbay, Phlox starts behaving as though he's nearing a sleep cycle even though he's just had one. Navaar becomes attracted to Archer, and D'Nesh to Kelby, whose friction with Trip increases.

The ship reaches the planet and begins their scans, and a small alien science vessel fires on Enterprise . Archer gives Malcolm the order to destroy it, but Malcolm refuses. Archer tries to do it himself, but it leaves. Then, Kelby and D'Nesh have a snog and she tells him he's better than Trip, so he goes to engineering and sabotages the EPS system, leading to a fistfight between him and Trip.

Phlox examines Trip in sickbay and reveals that the reason the crew has been so out of sorts is because of a pheromone the Orion women have, but that Trip and T'Pol are immune, and the symptoms will increase with time. Archer locks the slave girls in decon and interrogates them, but they deny everything. While Trip and T'Pol work on repairs in engineering, she reveals that she's immune because she's a Vulcan, and he's immune because they became psychically bonded that time they had sex.

Harrad-Sar returns before the repairs can be done, claiming that he's ready to claim his "reward": Enterprise . They fight, leading to Enterprise 's weapons going offline and the Orion ship hauling Enteprise away. T'Pol and Trip think of a plan, but then the Orion women escape and go onto the bridge and Navaar persuades Archer to have T'Pol arrested. He orders Malcolm to arrest T'Pol, and Malcolm tries, but is stunned by Trip, who also stuns Archer and Travis. Then, the Orion women are sent away.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Affably Evil : Harrad-Sar seems friendly enough...until he reveals that he's after Archer's head. And even then, he's not very malicious about it, assuring Archer that it's Nothing Personal .
  • Behind the Black : Used for good effect with the dance scene, where one dancing girl suddenly becomes three.
  • Big "SHUT UP!" : Phlox combines it with the off-button hypospray when he sedates Kelby.
  • Call-Back : Trip sleeping with T'Pol back in "Harbinger" has made him immune to Orion pheromones since the two are now psychically bonded and T'Pol is a Vulcan.
  • Continuity Nod : Malcolm isn't too keen on dealing with the Orions after they tried to enslave nine of the crew .
  • Dinner and a Show : Aboard Harrad-Sar's ship. The dancing Orion girls provide one hell of a show.
  • Distracted by the Sexy : Every guy on Enterprise finds it extremely hard to concentrate when they see the Orions, especially Kelby— but not Trip .
  • Early-Installment Weirdness : The idea that female Orions have pheromones that control males and make other females feel ill is never used again. In the next arc of this very season of Enterprise Orion women will be shown serving on the Mirror Universe Enterprise , and in the 2009 Star Trek film, Uhura has a female Orion roommate who obviously doesn't give her a headache and while she sleeps with Kirk, doesn't appear to exert any unusual influence over him. And if Big Bad Osyraa in Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery could do that, she surely would have been shown using it to her advantage. Lower Decks justifies this however by saying not all Orion women emitted or utilized such pheromones, nor were all Orion women even capable of doing so (with Tendi getting annoyed at the stereotype that all Orion females have this ability).
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending : In homage to the TOS "Everybody Laughs But Spock" ending, we have everyone laughing except T'Pol.
  • Expecting Someone Taller : A variation. Harrad-Sar says that for someone wanted by the Klingons and the Orions, he was expecting Archer to have a more robust appetite. Archer: With all those people after me, I need to stay quick on my feet.
  • The Gadfly : Trip can't resist trolling T'Pol about their relationship.
  • Get Out! : Trip throws Kelby out of Engineering for his insubordination.
  • Green-Skinned Space Babe : This episode brings back the green-skinned attractive Orion women who were the Trope Namer .
  • Happiness in Slavery : Played With . Orion slave girls seem perfectly happy to sexually please their masters, but because of the pheromones they emit, it's actually their masters who are held in thrall. Harrad-Sar even admits as such, in the perfectly calm voice of someone who's accepted this long ago.
  • Hate Plague : One side-effect of the Orion pheromones is that several of the men start going at each other's throats. Trip has to break up more than one fight in Engineering.
  • Interspecies Romance : The Enterprise men, who are all humans and a Denobulan, are all attracted to the Orion women, and Navaar in particular is very interested in Archer.
  • Love Is in the Air : The Orion women produce pheromones that excite men and make other women lethargic and give them headaches.
  • One of the Orion women sinks her pheromones into Kelby, making him sabotage Enterprise .
  • It then turns out that this is the hat of Orion women. Harrad-Sar even admits that the men are the real slaves in Orion society.
  • Moment Killer : Archer is busy snogging one of the Orion females when T'Pol calls him to the bridge.
  • Ms. Fanservice : Three Orion women wearing skimpy clothing, introduced via sexy dance. Yeah, that counts.
  • No-Sell : The unidentified science vessel fails to inflict any damage to Enterprise .
  • Not So Stoic : Downplayed; T'Pol apparently makes a joke towards the end of the episode, though it's left ambiguous as to whether she truly meant it as a joke.
  • Our Dragons Are Different : T'Pol mentions some reports on flying, fire-breathing reptiles on Berengaria, though she questions the accuracy of these reports. Spock can confirm that they're real.
  • Sexually Transmitted Superpowers : The episode reveals that Vulcans are immune to Orions, who usually make everyone fall in love with them at first sight unless there's an Incompatible Orientation , and if a human has slept with a Vulcan, they gain this immunity.
  • Shouting Free-for-All : When Kelby is in Sickbay after sabotaging Enterprise , he and Archer and Phlox start trying to shout over each other until Phlox shuts him up via off-button hypospray .
  • Unusual Euphemism : Trip: We didn't mate . T'Pol: [quietly] Uh-huh...

What are the Orion in Star Trek? Explained

Image of Kiona Jones

It used to be that if a Star Trek fan talked about an Orion character, they then had to explain the concept of fetishization in sci-fi TV. The concept of the ‘Orion slave girl’ goes way back to Captain Pike sitting around with a bunch of sleazy guys as they leer at an undulating green woman.

Vina (Susan Oliver) was the first Orion ever introduced into Star Trek , but she certainly wasn’t the last. She was, however, the most influential. From The Next Generation to Discovery , the image of the half-dressed or ne’er-do-well Orion has persisted for years. Only recently has that started to change with new Star Trek TV shows .

Who are the Orion in Star Trek ?

startrek_orion_pirates

They are a green-skinned race of otherwise humanoid beings from the planet Orion. The only thing more advanced than their society is the pervasive stereotypes about them as individuals. There’s the overly sexualized Orion walking around half-dressed, and there’s the stealing Orion with a passion for piracy.

The Original Series brought them in with an emphasis on their seductive nature. Shows like Voyager and Enterprise later gave them a dark edge of criminal tendencies. Newer shows, though, have allowed Orion characters to become more complex. Some like crime, some join Starfleet, and others just want to have a good time.

Lower Decks has truly taken the cake with Lt. D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells). This newly promoted ensign is on the upward track of her Starfleet career and only time will tell just how far she goes. She’s also one of the first Orion officers that we see in a position of power. In season 4, episode 4, “Something Borrowed, Something Green” we even got a rare glimpse into Orion wedding rituals and their wild club life.

However, not all the new Orion characters deviate from the established norm. Osyraa (Janet Kidder) was the leader of the Orion crime syndicate in Discovery . Her favorite pastime was breaking rules and getting rich (as well as enslaving people). Further explanation of this crime group would require a completely different conversation and a rewatch of Deep Space Nine . Just know that they were bad to the bone.

Starfleet represents the social progress of Humans. At the same time, it often highlights just how much work is yet to be done for other alien races. The easiest explanation is that Orion characters will continue to evolve within Star Trek . They just have a lot of stereotypes to beat in the process.

Star Trek Theory: Picard Retconned the Divisive Enterprise Series Finale

One shot of the NX-01 in Star Trek: Picard suggests the Star Trek: Enterprise series finale didn't happen the way fans think - and that may be good.

  • Picard Season 3 slyly changes Star Trek history by introducing an NX-01 redesign, challenging Enterprise's controversial finale.
  • The inclusion of the NX-01 refit in Picard hints at a major retcon in Enterprise's finale, suggesting a different fate for Trip Tucker.
  • The theory that Trip survived the final mission creates a fresh perspective on the Star Trek universe, potentially altering canon.

With all the big action and high emotions in Star Trek: Picard Season 3, fans can be forgiven for missing a detail in Episode 9, "Võx" that could retcon the divisive series finale of Star Trek: Enterprise . The last series of "second-wave" Star Trek , its sudden cancelation led to an ignominious end not just for the show but for that entire era of the franchise.

During Picard Season 3, Episode 6 "The Bounty," a number of ships appeared in the Fleet Museum, including the NX-01 from Enterprise. However, when the heroes returned to the Fleet Museum in "Võx," pop culture critic and YouTuber Jessie Earl noticed something about that early-era Starfleet vessel. Rather than the design seen in the series with a saucer section and two nacelles, it was the "NX-01 refit," a redesign meant to debut in Season 5 if the series hadn't been canceled. This means the new NX-01 is as officially canon as anything in Star Trek can be. Since the NX-01 hadn't been redesigned by Enterprise 's finale, Earl suggested Picard implies that episode was not the true end of the first Enterprise 's mission. This theory is critical because it's about more than which ship was correct; it's about saving the life of a fan-favorite character.

Updated March 18, 2024, by Joshua M. Patton: In the year since Picard's final season debuted, there has been no more information released about what the inclusion of the NX-class refit means to Star Trek canon. So, the notion that "Trip Tucker lives" is still very much in the realm of "fan theory." Yet, the idea the NX-01 Enterprise refit means the ship seen in the series finale is inaccurate is a strong theory. This article has been updated to include more information about the Enterprise finale, "These Are the Voyages" and comport to CBR's current formatting standards.

Why the Star Trek: Enterprise Finale Was Controversial Among the Fans and Cast

The best star trek legacy character returns in 2023.

Star Trek: Enterprise producers tricked UPN into greenlighting a fourth season, so it wasn't really a surprsie the series was canceled that year. While Enterprise was the network's highest-rated show, UPN just didn't have enough reach to bring in the advertising dollars needed to sustain it. Since the finale for this series was going to be the end of an unprecedented 18-year run for Star Trek under Rick Berman, the producer wanted to make "a valentine" to the whole endeavor and the fans , according to a conversation he and Brannon Braga shared on the complete series home release. The only way to bring the 22nd Century cast into the 24th -- without time travel and changing Star Trek canon -- was to use the holodeck. However, this irked many of the Enterprise cast who felt they were being sidelined in their own finale. In another special features conversation, Braga and Bakula discussed the fight they had about this very subject.

Other actors, including Jonathan Frakes, felt uncomfortable with the decision, too, according to The Fifty-Year Mission - The Next 25 Years by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman. Frakes said he agreed because he "always says 'yes'" to Star Trek , and that Scott Bakula was a gentleman on set. "I would have been so insulted. I don't think that was our finest hour," Frakes said. Actor Jeffery Combs, a mainstay in the universe but most notably the Andorrian commander Shran on Enterprise was less charitable. He said he believed Berman's choice to include The Next Generation was a way to remind the studio and the fans that he "had a successful" show in TNG . In the Enterprise special features, Braga apologizes more than once for the finale, though he admits he thought it was a "cool" idea at the time, including the death of Trip Tucker.

Still, the actors held no grudges. Along with Bakula's grace in welcoming the guest stars, the others in the cast spoke highly of their TNG co-stars. On an episode of The Shuttlepod Show with Frakes , former host and Malcom Reed actor Dominic Keating told the Riker actor he enjoyed working with him. He told him "one of the funnest days [he] had shooting [on the series] was with [Frakes] in that galley." While Star Trek is lousy with time-travel, there are no do-overs in real life. However, "The Bounty," may have stealthily retconned the Enterprise finale and Trip's death.

Theory: The Enterprise Finale Was Based on Faulty Historical Information

'keep being noisy': picard star provides star trek: legacy update.

Star Trek: Enterprise ended its voyage in 2005, but the NX-01 refit didn't debut until six years later in Doug Drexler's official Ships of the Line calendar. The redesign added the round deflector dish and body of the ship to the original -- bridging the gap between the NX-01 and the NCC-1701 Enterprise . That this version of the ship was at the Fleet Museum suggests the changes were made before the NX ships were decommissioned. As Earl explains , this means the ship the crew occupied in the finale was not the correct ship. It was a work of historical fiction.

What made the Enterprise finale so divisive was that it was technically an episode of The Next Generation . Riker and his wife Deanna Troi appeared, sharing scenes that take place during TNG Season 7, Episode 12, "The Pegasus." Troi suggested Riker use this holodeck program of the last mission of the original Enterprise to help make a tough decision. While the ship had undergone changes from what viewers were used to seeing, it didn't have an entirely new section. The NX-01 wasn't actually seen in the finale except on display monitors, but there was a scene in its shuttle bay. Since it wasn't redesigned, that suggests the ship in the holodeck program was not the accurate ship .

Earl also pointed out how Riker influenced events when he appeared as the ship's chef -- a character mentioned but never seen during the run of Enterprise . At the end of the episode, the vessel was boarded and Chief Engineer Trip Tucker died saving everyone. However, Earl noted a Star Trek novel called The Good Men Do , by Andy Mangels and Michael A. Martin, introduced the idea that Trip faked his death to go on an undercover mission involving Romulans. A simpler retcon of Trip's death is the holodeck program was just historical fiction or somehow inaccurate. Whatever the case, the redesigned ship means the holoprogram could've gotten more things wrong. It's a possibility Troi acknowledged when Riker noted that security officer Malcolm Reed was shorter than he expected.

Why Picard May Have Stealthily Retconned the Enterprise Finale

How liam shaw challenges war veteran tropes in star trek: picard season 3.

Star Trek: Enterprise was the second of the franchise's second-wave series to not be made for syndication. It debuted on the United Paramount Network (UPN), which failed and became half of The CW five years. Brannon Braga, showrunner for most of Enterprise , said in a conversation with the cast on the complete series home release that he regrets the story they told. He was a bit too hard on himself. It was a good episode of Star Trek , it was just a poor series finale for Enterprise . In their last episode, rather than actual human beings with agency, the crew of the NX-01 were just holographic action figures.

In "Võx," Worf made a casual reference to the USS Enterprise -E's destruction by saying, "That was not my fault." Picard showrunner Terry Matalas tweeted that this was essentially a layup for Star Trek novel writers. Perhaps the NX-01 refit inclusion was another or, as Earl suggested, a nod to The Good Men Do . Matalas worked on Enterprise and had an on-camera appearance in the series finale as an Enterprise-D crewman, walking past Troi as she got on a turbolift -- so he may like the Enterprise series finale just as it is.

Since this is all an off-screen story and headcanon, it is possible that the NX-01 refit was a different ship than the first Enterprise . It might be in the Fleet Museum just so Doug Drexler's amazing design made it on-screen just once. Yet if any Star Trek series finale could use a do-over, it's Enterprise , and even the guy who wrote it agrees. As Earl says, this Picard theory is a great way to live life knowing Trip survived the final mission. But, if a fan happens to love the finale? Then it would take more than the appearance of a ship to change that. It's been a long road from Enterprise to Picard , and it's nice the NX-01 refit design got to make the journey.

The Dual Paths of the Orions and the Andorians

What brought these two different societies together?

Star Trek: Discovery

StarTrek.com

The third season premiere of Star Trek: Discovery , "That Hope Is You, Part 1," introduced viewers to the 32nd Century. This is the farthest point in the Star Trek timeline to be explored in a weekly series, and it’s proving to be a much more hostile environment for the crew of Discovery . The Federation is a shadow of its former self, and unexpected alliances have risen in its place. Case in point, the Orions and the Andorians formed a partnership on the Mercantile, which shocked Michael Burnham. In the past, neither race seemed like natural allies.

In Star Trek : The Original Series episode, " Journey to Babel ," the Orions tried to disrupt a diplomatic mission by murdering delegates. The Orion saboteur, Thelev, was also surgically altered to pass as an Andorian, and given a cover identity to hide his true mission and motives. Those actions suggest that the Orions and the Andorians have been at odds before. Certainly both races have had vastly different relationships with the Federation.

Four Andorians emerge with phaser rifles at their sides in 'The Andorian Incident'

"The Andorian Incident"

Star Trek: Enterprise shed some light on the Andorians’ place in universal politics in " The Andorian Incident ." Captain Archer and the Enterprise visited the Vulcan monastery on P'Jem just as the Andorians launched a mission to determine if it was secretly a station for Vulcans to spy on them. The Vulcans and Andorians shared a border, and they were mutually suspicious about each other. Archer defused the situation when he found proof that the Andorians had correctly guessed P’Jem’s true purpose.

Archer’s actions impressed Thy'lek Shran, which earned the captain Shran’s trust and friendship. Over the following years, Shran assisted Enterprise during the Xindi War and helped them save Earth from another interplanetary attack. In turn, Enterprise ’s crew deescalated the Cold War between the Andorians and Vulcans, and kept it from progressing into a full scale war. That ultimately led the Andorians to join the Vulcans and the humans as founding members of the Federation.

Thelev, an Orion posing as an Andorian, in order to infiltrate the Babel conference is exposed after the murder of a Tellarite ambassador and damage to his faux antennae, stands aboard the Enterprise bridge witnesses his ship on the viewfinder in 'Journey to Babel'

"Journey to Babel"

Conversely, the Orions had no desire to be a part of the Federation. In fact, they even worked to undermine the Federation’s goals. In “Journey To Babel,” Thelev’s murderous actions were meant to prevent the mineral rich planet, Coridan, from joining the Federation and coming under its protection. When that failed, Thelev and his compatriots on the Orion ship committed suicide rather than revealing further details after capture.

The Orions displayed a similar willingness to die to protect their illusion of neutrality in the Star Trek: The Animated Series episode, “The Pirates of Orion.” The pirate captain only relented when he realized that it would be pointless to sacrifice so many lives for a lie. That sentiment wasn’t shared by every member of the Orion race. As seen in the Enterprise episode “ Borderland ,” the Orion Syndicate attacked the ship and kidnapped nine crew members with the intention of selling them into slavery. Archer’s successful rescue attempt led him to be branded a criminal because he “stole” Orion property.

A member of the Orion Syndicate lifts T'Pol up as he attempts to auction her off as a slave in 'Borderland'

"Borderland"

By the 24th Century, the Orion Syndicate had become almost a dark mirror of the Federation. In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , the Orion Syndicate included multiple races in their criminal operations that spanned the galaxy. Deep Space Nine ’s “ A Simple Investigation ,” " The Ascent ,” and “ Honor Among Thieves ” established the scope of the Syndicate’s reach as it adopted tactics similar to organized crime families on Earth.

Gender politics are also vastly different between the Orions and the Andorians. In Andorian society, women were considered equal to men. Both sexes fought alongside each other, and it was not uncommon for female Andorians to initiate a pairing with a male. By comparison, the first Orion women introduced in “The Cage” and “The Menagerie, Parts I & II" were described as slave girls who were irresistible to the opposite sex even outside of their own species.

Three Orion women uphold a ruse where their adversaries believe them to be slaves as a way to underestimate them. In 'Bound,' it's poor custom to discuss business before the entertainment

"Bound"

The pheromones released by Orion women were incredibly effective, and nearly caused the Enterprise to fall under enemy control in “ Bound .” The three women, Navaar, D'Nesh and Maras, masqueraded as slaves as a way to lull the male members of the crew into falling under their control. Orion women also rose in rank within the Syndicate itself, possibly in part due to their physiological abilities.

Despite the vast differences between the Andorians and the Orions, members of both species have served in Starfleet. The earliest example of this was The Animated Series episode, “Yesteryear,” when an Andorian named Thelin replaced Spock as the Enterprise ’s First Officer in an alternate timeline. Andorian ambassadors and admirals were also spotted in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home .

Tendi goes full pirate on Star Trek: Lower Decks' 'Hear All, Trust Nothing'

"Hear All, Trust Nothing"

In the Kelvin timeline, an Orion cadet named Gaila attended Starfleet Academy alongside Kirk, Spock, and Uhura in Star Trek (2009) . But in the Prime timeline, Star Trek: Lower Decks ’ Ensign D'Vana Tendi has the distinction of being the first Orion main character in a Star Trek series. It’s also notable that Tendi has not demonstrated any special pheromone abilities that earlier Orion women had.

Thus far, we don’t have enough information to understand how and why the Orions and Andorians have formed an alliance. But we do know that The Burn that led to the fall of the Federation happened within the last century. Without the Federation in place, the Andorians presumably felt that partnering with the Orions was the best viable option. It’s also worth considering that the post-Burn rarity of dilithium crystals may have also brought the two races together. Access to dilithium crystals on Coridan was the main reason that Thelev impersonated an Andorian in "Journey to Babel.” It stands to reason that the need for dilithium is still driving their actions in the 32nd Century.

Given the rough shape of the galaxy, the partnership between the Orions and the Andorians probably won’t be the only unusual alliance encountered by the Discovery this season. The universe as we knew it is no more. But as viewers, it means that Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 is truly taking us where no one has gone before.

Star Trek: Best Book-Only Characters

  • The Star Trek novels introduce unique characters like Akaar and Treir, adding depth to the expansive Starfleet universe.
  • Characters like Nick Keller and Elias Vaughn bring new perspectives to the post- DS9 era, facing challenging galactic events.
  • Mackenzie Calhoun leads the USS Excalibur in a new hero ship series, showcasing tactical genius in the New Frontier books.

Just like the universe itself, the Star Trek franchise is huge and far-reaching, encompassing several television shows, and numerous video games, movies, and books. While many of Star Trek 's most iconic characters appear in various series and films, there are many other great characters who only feature in alternative media sources. For instance, the final frontier has spawned some memorable video game-based characters .

Star Trek: 8 Most Powerful Federation Starships, Ranked

Yet perhaps the richest source of characters is the now questionably canon series of books that take place following The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine . From fresh takes on classic species like the Andorians and Orions, to some of Starfleet's finest officers, the Star Trek novels are a treasure trove of notable figures.

  • Publication Date: September 2002

Leonard James Akaar is unique among novel-only characters in that he does, in fact, make a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance on televised Trek . "Friday's Child," an episode of The Original Series , ends with his birth; however, the Capellan royal would not be seriously fleshed out until 2002's Mission Gamma: Twilight . By the time of the Deep Space 9 novels, Akaar had risen through the ranks of Starfleet to become an influential admiral with the ear of the Federation president.

Akaar's strategic mindset and steely resolve proved essential in preserving the Federation through some of its darkest periods, including the Borg invasion depicted in the Star Trek: Destiny series. The Starfleet legend may have been born in The Original Series , but the Star Trek novels were where he made his name.

First Appearence: Star Trek: Demons of Air and Darkness

  • Author: Keith R. A. DeCandido
  • Publication Date: September 2001

Star Trek features many inspirational female characters, from Kira Nerys to Katherine Janeway. However, few are as resourceful or as motivated as Treir , an Orion Dabo girl who transformed Quark's Bar into a highly successful business during the post- DS9 novels. Following her escape from Orion servitude, Treir earned her place as Quark's right-hand woman by implementing a series of radical reforms, including hiring a Dabo boy to attract more customers.

Star Trek: The Fates Of Every Live-Action TV Show's Main Character

Treir may not play a significant role in the canon-shattering events depicted in the Deep Space 9 novels, but this ruthless businesswoman helped to make Star Trek 's prose universe feel like a living, breathing place. If anyone is capable of giving Quark a run for his latinum, it's her.

Nick Keller

First appearence: star trek new earth: challenger.

  • Author: Diane Carey
  • Publication Date: August 2000

New Earth , a series of six novels that take place between Star Trek: The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan , was intended to act as a backdoor pilot for a new narrative focusing on Commander Nick Keller . In the final novel, Keller takes command of a makeshift starship in order to defend the human colony of Belle Terre from alien attack. Keller was conflicted between overthrowing his inept captain and preserving the lives of his comrades, and it's a great shame that a full series based on the space cowboy's adventures never emerged.

Interestingly, author Diane Carey based Keller's appearance on Scott Bakula, who would go on to play Captain Jonathan Archer in Star Trek: Enterprise . Keller, however, would make only two more appearances in the Star Trek universe, with both being part of the multi-series Gateways crossover event.

Elias Vaughn

First appearence: star trek: avatar (book one).

  • Author: S. D. Perry
  • Publication Date: July 2001

Elias Vaughn was a Starfleet officer and intelligence operative who joined Deep Space 9's command staff following the end of the Dominion War . Despite only holding the rank of commander, Vaughn's expertise proved a boon to the Federation outpost, and he played a role in several key events, including the USS Defiant 's post-war exploration of the Gamma Quadrant (depicted in the Mission Gamma sub-series).

Star Trek: 8 Impressive Things Kirk Did Before Joining The USS Enterprise

Vaughn was haunted by the death of his wife, Ruriko, and his troubled relationship with his estranged daughter, Prynn. This relationship was complicated by the fact that Prynn was also assigned to Deep Space 9. However, father and daughter were eventually able to reconcile–but not without some bumps along the way.

Christine Vale

First appearence: star trek: the belly of the beast.

  • Author: Dean Wesley Smith

While William Riker's USS Titan has made notable appearances in Star Trek: Lower Decks , the starship's adventures were originally chronicled in a series of spin-off novels. These books featured Christine Vale , a former detective turned Starfleet officer, as Riker's second-in-command. Vale was initially unwilling to take the post, as she disliked the idea of Riker working so closely with his wife, Deanna Troi.

Luckily, Vale took the post, which allowed her to act as a counterweight to any of Riker's Troi-related biases. During her time aboard the USS Titan , she helped to explore the Beta Quadrant and fend off a Borg invasion. Indeed, her record was so good that, following Riker's promotion to admiral, she took command of the Luna -class starship.

Thirishar ch'Thane

From their initial appearance in 1967's "Journey to Babel" and 2001's "The Andorian Incident," references to Star Trek 's Andorians were true and far between. One important detail was disclosed in The Next Generation , however: Andorians have four sexes , with all four required for successful reproduction.

The character of Thirishar ch'Thane (or "Shar") was a response to this premise. Shar served as Deep Space Nine's science officer following the end of the Dominion War, but was torn between his commitments to Starfleet and to his mating group, who wished him to return to Andor. This dilemma was further complicated by a dangerous decline in Andorian fertility, which threatened to cause the Andorians' extinction in the long term. Shar was eventually able to use his scientific knowledge to help solve the Andorian fertility crisis.

The Jem'Hadar are one of Star Trek 's most iconic creations , a powerful race of warriors motivated by their addiction to the chemical ketracel-white. During the Dominion War of 2373–2375, the Jem'Hadar were central to the Dominion assaults which nearly overwhelmed the Federation Alliance.

8 Best Starfleet Ships During The Dominion War

After the war's conclusion, Taran'atar , a Jem'Hadar without a ketracel-white dependency, was sent to Deep Space Nine as a cultural observer. Taran'atar's struggle to adjust to the Alpha Quadrant during peacetime makes for fascinating reading, as does seeing the fearsome warrior growing closer to his former enemies. Taran'atar's story takes some strange twists and turns, but he remains a fascinating character.

Mackenzie Calhoun

First appearence: star trek new frontier: house of cards.

  • Author: Peter David
  • Publication Date: July 1997

In 1997, Pocket Books published the first of Peter David's New Frontier books. While these novels included several characters from TV Trek (mostly notably Commander Shelby from "The Best of Both Worlds" ), they focused on a new hero ship, the USS Excalibur , and a new captain: Mackenzie Calhoun . Calhoun, an alien warrior modeled after Mel Gibson, was depicted as a tactical genius capable of beating Starfleet's toughest challenges–including the infamous Kobayashi Maru test.

Calhoun soon became a fan-favorite, with his New Frontier series including over 20 volumes. The Xenanian captain was even popular enough to be made into an action figure, the only example of this honor being bestowed on a character originating from any of Star Trek 's novels.

Just ahead of  Star Trek: Discovery’s final season, today the  Star Trek Universe got a bright spotlight shined upon it — and bringing readers a lot of new information about the future of this decades-old franchise.

In a lengthy cover feature for Variety, writer  Adam B. Vary talks to Trek’s cast and creative team, visiting the sets of  Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, the upcoming  Star Trek: Section 31 film starring Michelle Yeoh, and even going inside preproduction on the next television adventure, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

For the currently-filming third season of Strange New Worlds , the  Enterprise sets will be expanding with a dedicated laboratory where Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck) will investigate scientific dilemmas in front of a bank of large monitors — and above a water-filled tank which has already led some fans to joke that it may be a live-action Cetacean Ops.

In this new photo showcasing the new science lab from production designer Jonathan Lee , Spock is seen wearing an updated version of the Original Series’ red hazmat suits first seen in “The Naked Time” — redesigned by series costumer Bernadette Croft for the modern era.

Season 3 will also continue the trend of bringing new genres to Strange New Worlds episodes — as longtime Trek director Jonathan Frakes does reveal he’s finished a story “framed as a Hollywood murder mystery” that he describes as “the best episode of television I’ve ever done.”

Moving to the next live-action adventure — Michelle Yeoh’s  Section 31 film, which just finished filming last week — the  Variety piece confirms that the project shifted from an ongoing series to a one-off movie due to the impact of the pandemic, as well as Michelle Yeoh’s rise in popularity that reduced her availability.

Despite her limited schedule, the actor returned to the  Trek fold for this new Philippa Georgiou project, which sees the one-time Terran emperor zapped back in time after departing the 32nd century in Star Trek: Discovery Season 3. But where, you may ask, did the Section 31 agent arrive?

star trek enterprise orion

Surprisingly, it seems that the film will be spending at least some time in the 24th century’s ‘Lost Era’ — between the launch of the Enterprise- B in Star Trek: Generations and the launch of the Enterprise- D in Star Trek: The Next Generation — as Variety reveals the identity of one of Yeoh’s  Section 31 co-stars.

Kacey Rohl ( Hannibal, The Magicians ) will be portraying as a young Rachel Garrett , better known to Trek die-hards as the future captain of the  Enterprise -C. The character appeared only once, in  Next Gen’s “Yesterday’s Enterprise,” leading her ship and crew into a dark alternate future where she died in a Klingon attack before the  Enterprise- C could return to its own time. (The older Garrett was played by Tricia O’Neil.)

The article also mentions that despite its temporal setting, the Section 31 film has repurposed some sets originally built for the now-finished  Discovery series — and that the budget is, as shared by Alex Kurtzman, “much less” than a theatrical Trek production.

Kurtzman also noted that his team at Secret Hideout is considering other possible streaming movie concepts, including a possible  Star Trek: Picard follow-up, and that Michelle Yeoh is interested in a  Section 31 sequel… if the first film is successful.

Speaking of  Trek theatrical projects, the years-long efforts to drum up a fourth and final outing for Chris Pine’s  Star Trek Kelvin Timeline crew continue — I know, I know, you’ve heard that  many times before — with the current Kelvin project in the hands of screenwriter Steve Yockey (HBO’s The Flight Attendant ).

Also still chugging along is that other film concept first discussed back in January — said to be a prequel to the overall Star Trek timeline — expected to move into active preproduction later in 2024.

As always… we’ll see what happens in this department!

The next big television project, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , has been oddly coy about its place in the Star Trek timeline — and while fans have speculated for months about when the series will take place, Variety has confirmed that the show will be set in the post- Discovery 32nd century era.

Set to start filming later this summer as previously reported ,  Starfleet Academy has taken over the former home of  Star Trek: Discovery in Toronto’s Pinewood Studios. The biggest soundstage in Canada, the series is expected to film on “the largest single set ever created for  Star Trek television.”

“Plans [include] the series’ central academic atrium, a sprawling, two-story structure that will include a mess hall, amphitheater, trees, catwalks, multiple classrooms and a striking view of the Golden Gate Bridge in a single, contiguous space. To fit it all, they plan to use every inch of Pinewood Toronto’s 45,900 square foot soundstage.”

As for the still-uncast  Academy cadets, showrunner Noga Landau describes them as kids who have “never had a red alert before, [and who] never had to operate a transporter or be in a phaser fight.”

Finally, Alex Kurtzman went onto share that he has no plans to hand over the Star Trek franchise reins anytime soon.

“The minute I fall out of love with [‘Star Trek] is the minute that it’s not for me anymore. I’m not there yet,” he says.   “To be able to build in this universe to tell stories that are fundamentally about optimism and a better future at a time when the world seems to be falling apart — it’s a really powerful place to live every day.”

You can read the entire feature piece — truly worth your time — on Variety’s  website.

Star Trek: Discovery returns next week, followed by new episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy later in 2024. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is expected to return in 2025. Release dates for Star Trek: Section 31 and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy have not yet been announced.

Navaar was an Orion female who, in 2154 , attempted to capture Jonathan Archer , who was considered a fugitive by the Orion Syndicate for liberating a slave market on Verex III earlier in the year, making it difficult for more "slaves" to be sold.

Navaar and her sisters, D'Nesh and Maras , were originally given to Captain Archer as a gift by the Orion privateer Harrad-Sar . Once aboard Enterprise , they quickly began to have an adverse affect on the crew. Doctor Phlox discovered that Orion females produced extremely potent pheromones , which caused increased aggression in males and left them extremely susceptible to suggestion. D'Nesh was able to manipulate Commander Kelby into disabling Enterprise 's warp engines , leaving them unable to escape when Harrad-Sar returned. When Harrad-Sar finally did arrive, he revealed to Archer that it was, in fact, the females who were in charge, and he was simply carrying out their wishes. Commanders Tucker and T'Pol were able to successfully disable Harrad-Sar's ship , at which point Navaar attempted to seduce Tucker, but was unsuccessful due to an immunity he had acquired through a telepathic bond with T'Pol. Navaar and her sisters were returned to Harrad-Sar, who departed at low impulse. ( ENT : " Bound ")
