5 things to know about airline travel alerts

Sean Cudahy

If you've had trips booked to or from Florida or other destinations on the East Coast this past week, there's a good chance you've dealt with an airline travel alert as Hurricane Ian made its way north .

These alerts are common during hurricanes as well as winter snowstorms and particularly disruptive rounds of summer thunderstorms, and often cause airlines to relax their policies surrounding itinerary changes. While they may be called something different from airline to airline — travel notice, advisory, etc. — the idea behind these alerts issued by airlines is that they give passengers improved flexibility in getting on new flights, postponing travel or avoiding cities with bad weather.

In the past, I have used the leniency offered by travel alerts to depart for a trip 24 hours early to beat a snowstorm and to avoid a connecting city where stormy weather was in the forecast. I've also canceled a trip affected by an alert and claimed travel credits I was then able to use for a future flight.

Since airlines have generally relaxed many of their cancellation and change policies compared to before the pandemic, it's much easier to change a trip for free now, even under normal circumstances, than it was a few years ago. Today, how critical a travel alert is for your itinerary often depends on the type of ticket you booked, and how flexible it was to begin with.

At the same time, these alerts can give any traveler an early heads-up about impending bad weather, prompt you to change your itinerary and help with providing added flexibility. So, knowing what a travel alert means and how to take advantage of it will help you have the smoothest and cheapest trip possible — whether it's now, in a couple of days or months down the road.

aa travel weather advisory

A travel alert is a good heads-up

I often add my destination city — and even connecting cities — to my iPhone's weather app in the days before a flight, but a travel alert from an airline can likewise be a good way to notice if your itinerary could be affected by bad weather.

Say you're planning to fly from Providence, Rhode Island, to Cancun, Mexico, with a connection in Atlanta. If you get a winter weather travel alert for Atlanta, that might warn you that the likelihood of a delay or cancellation due to snow or ice is high.

These alerts are often based on weather forecasts. They can be an early sign that the weather somewhere along your itinerary is looking dicey and may cause your trip to be disrupted.

Anyone should be able to change a trip

The largest U.S. airlines have relaxed change fees in recent years, allowing passengers in most ticket classes to at least cancel and get flight credit for future trips, or change a ticket and, at worst, pay a fare difference. The big exception, though, is that under normal circumstances, basic economy passengers aboard American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines don't have trip-changing flexibility.

That's where a travel alert comes in: If your trip is affected by one of these advisories, even if you booked basic economy, you'll generally be allowed to change your trip with no fees.

There's frequently no need to stand in line or call the airline's customer service number. Check the airline's app ; you may be able to quickly rebook right there.

aa travel weather advisory

Rebook the same trip or get flight credit

Some of the specific terms will differ from airline to airline when it comes to travel alert policies, and can also change from one specific alert to the next. However, on the three domestic legacy carriers, travel alerts often carry two general rebooking options.

If your travels are affected by the alert, you can typically rebook your trip for the near future — often directly after the weather event subsides. If you decide on this option, you may be able to rebook the same trip without paying any difference in fare, as long as you travel in the same cabin. Read the alert carefully: It should specify what the acceptable travel dates are for this option. You'll probably have to book the same origin and destination cities you had planned on your original itinerary.

Alternatively, you can often claim flight credit to use in booking a future flight. This is a good choice if you no longer want to travel to the same destination, or if that specified window of dates no longer works for you. The airlines will typically give you an option to claim flight credits for the value of your ticket. American, Delta and United often allow you a year to use these credits. One thing to watch for: Double-check the alert to see whether you have a year from when you claim the credits or a year from when the original ticket was booked; you'd hate to see those credits expire .

On Southwest Airlines, you can always cancel and rebook your trip with future flight credit, even outside of a travel alert; in fact, certain higher-fare tickets are always eligible for refunds.

Again, these are just general rules of thumb, and specific policies can vary from airline to airline and from one weather event to the next. So, be sure to check the particular alert that applies to your trip.

aa travel weather advisory

Not covered by the alert? Keep checking

If you're not covered by a travel alert but are concerned about impending weather, keep checking the airline's website, the app and your email inbox. As weather forecasts change, cities included in travel alerts change.

For instance, as Hurricane Ian began to form as a tropical storm over the Caribbean, airlines issued alerts for destinations like Jamaica, Grand Cayman and some Florida airports. Carriers added dozens more airports to the alerts as Ian strengthened and then moved north, though.

Changing forecasts can also greatly affect the dates listed as part of an alert, so be sure to bookmark the alert page and watch for subsequent updates.

Don't forget about refunds

Keep in mind that whether a cancellation or delay is "the airline's fault," or not, affects reimbursement for things like an extra hotel night or a meal while you wait out a delay. Generally, during bad weather — which is a common cause of travel alerts — you won't be eligible for those types of reimbursements if your trip is disrupted.

On the other hand, if your flight is canceled or significantly delayed and you choose not to travel, you are entitled to a timely refund under U.S. Department of Transportation policies. That goes even for weather-related disruptions.

Keep in mind, if you take the airline up on its offer to rebook you, or accept credits for future travel, you're not eligible for a refund.

If the airline cancels your trip due to the weather though, and you'd like your money back rather than putting it toward future travel, asking the airline for a refund is certainly an option at your disposal.

Bottom line

Plenty of travelers have had to contend with travel alerts over the last couple of weeks as hurricane season threw a wrench in many fall travel plans. Knowing how these advisories work and how they can affect your trips can be crucial. This is especially true as Mother Nature is sure to intervene in itineraries in the form of snow and ice storms within the next few months.

Powerful winds gusting up to 100 mph cause travel delays and power outages in Northeast

A satellite image of the Northeast United States on March 11, 2024.

Around 52 million people remain under wind alerts Monday afternoon across the Northeast, from Maryland to Maine.

Mount Washington, New Hampshire, experienced the highest peak wind gusts of the day at 109 mph.

Philadelphia recorded 63 mph wind gusts, while Newark, New Jersey, saw 59 mph and Providence, Rhode Island, reached 53 mph. Boston winds gusted 46 mph.

Power outages have been reported in parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and New Hampshire.

The strong winds should relax this evening, and most wind alerts should expire late tonight or overnight.

On Monday, 62 million people woke up under wind advisories and high wind warnings stretching from Maine to the mountains of western North Carolina.

For areas under wind alerts, Monday's winds were forecast to be sustained at 25 to 35 mph with gusts as high as 50 to 60 mph.

These high wind forecasts included the heavily traveled I-95 corridor and large airport hubs in the Washington-Baltimore region, Philadelphia International Airport, the major tri-state airports (Newark, LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy) and Boston Logan.

Travel delays are likely at the airports until the winds subside, which is not expected to occur until winds go below wind advisory criteria overnight Monday into Tuesday morning.

Downed trees and power outages are also expected to be impacts from Monday's high winds across the eastern states.

In addition to the high winds, light to moderate snow was expected to fall across the interior Northeast and New England through Monday night.

Winter storm warnings were up for the northern Adirondacks of upstate New York and parts of Vermont and northern New Hampshire.

Additional snow totals are expected to be generally 4 to 8 inches, with some isolated totals as high as 10 inches or more in spots.

Monday's wind and snow comes in the wake of a storm system that brought soaking rains to the southeast Friday into Saturday and the mid-Atlantic and Northeast Saturday into Sunday.

Following the weekend rainfall, Cape Hatteras, North Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia; Philadelphia; New York City; Bridgeport, Connecticut; and Providence, Rhode Island, are now having their wettest start to March on record.

And m ore than 80 river gauges from the southeast to coastal New England remained in minor to moderate flood stage as of midmorning Monday.

Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, was the area hardest-hit by flooding over the weekend, when strong onshore winds pushed water into the community, cutting off roads and inundating homes. This area is highly vulnerable to coastal flooding, with this being the second time in 2024 that the area has flooded.

U.S. travel alert: Don’t go to this Caribbean nation, popular with cruise ships

Update: Haiti’s acting Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced on Tuesday that he intends to resign from his position once a transitional presidential council is formed, according to the AP .

In a warning to travelers, the State Department urges people to not visit the Caribbean nation of Haiti, leaving the Travel Advisory at level four to discourage travel.

“Do not travel to Haiti,” the Port-au-Prince U.S. Embassy said in a press release issued Sunday. “The current security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous. We are aware that there are few or no commercial options to depart Haiti safely at this time. As they become available, we urge U.S. citizens to take advantage of them.”

Along with Haiti, other level four countries where Americans are discouraged from traveling to are North Korea, Russia, Venezuela, Ukraine, Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, according to the State Department . To the east of Haiti is the Dominican Republic, which shares the same island. The Dominican Republic is under a level two advisory, which has urged travelers to take increased caution since June 23, 2023.

American travelers in Haiti are advised to avoid crowds, avoid being outside after dark, prepare to shelter in place, keep a low profile and be aware of their surroundings, the U.S. Embassy said.

Warring gangs have coordinated attacks on Haiti’s government, including political buildings and police departments, ABC News reported on Monday. One of the more prominent gang leaders, Jimmy Chérizier, aka “Barbecue,” even told Haiti’s acting Prime Minister Ariel Henry to step down for the violence to temporarily pause.

  • Westborough school bus driver charged with OUI, child endangerment

  • 6 Southwick-Tolland students charged in connection with alleged racist social media posts

“The first step is to overthrow Ariel Henry and then we will start the real fight against the current system, the system of corrupt oligarchs and corrupt traditional politicians,” Chérizier told the news network in a video call. “Not only are we fighting against Ariel Henry, but we are also fighting against everyone who has some complicity.”

Henry took power in the wake of President Jovenel Moïse’s assassination in 2021, ABC reported. In the years since, Henry has wanted to introduce proper elections but paused due to security concerns before landing on August 2025 to hold elections.

Amidst this violent political struggle, Royal Caribbean ships continue to call into Ladabee, about a six-hour drive away from Port-au-Prince, CNN reported. Despite Ladabee’s continued use, the company also monitors the situation on the ground while visitors do not leave the resort.

“The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority. Our global security teams are closely monitoring the situation in the area. At all times, we remind guests to remain aware of their surroundings while ashore and follow all State Department guidelines. Should any changes be required, guests will be notified directly,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson told CNN.

Winter weather still hitting Oregon Cascades; warm, dry weekend in the forecast

Screen capture / Oregon Department of Transportation

A winter weather advisory is still in place along the northern Oregon Cascades until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Travel could be difficult along the mountain passes.

The National Weather Service says several inches of snow are possible at elevations as low as 2,000 feet. Another foot of snow could fall above 3,000 feet by the evening.

But forecasters say precipitation should slow down later in the evening, and most of Oregon and Southwest Washington will dry out by Wednesday. Drier and warmer weather should last through the weekend into early next week.

The forecast heading into the weekend shows much of the region returning to sunny skies and high temperatures in the 60s. Portland high temps could reach the 70s Friday through Monday.

Major snowstorm heading for Denver metro area, get ready for snow totals as high as 18 inches

By Alex Lehnert, Dave Aguilera

Updated on: March 13, 2024 / 7:50 AM MDT / CBS Colorado

A storm system that was off the coast of the Pacific Northwest early Tuesday morning is headed for the Rocky Mountain region and is projected to bring wind and high snow totals to Denver starting late Wednesday. On Tuesday it was already bringing rain and snow inland.

winter-alerts.png

The snow totals for some of the southern and western parts of the Denver metro area could be near a foot and a half. But the entirety of the metro area is expected to see big snow -- 8" or more -- starting Wednesday night as rain, then changing over to snow and continuing with major snowfall through the day Thursday.

The storm system is projected to bring heavy, wet snow to Colorado's Front Range in part because of upslope winds that will be coming from a separate low-pressure system forming to the northeast.

"We are definitely looking at some significant snow for Denver and west. As you head west of Interstate 25, the snow totals will only increase," said First Alert Meteorologist Alex Lehnert. "We're looking at the possibility of as much as 3 feet of snow into some of our Front Range mountains, into Summit County possibly as well."

winter-alerts1.png

Winter Storm Warnings will go into effect early Wednesday morning. Travel may become impossible in the foothills and the mountains because of the snow and wind. The foothills could see 1 to 2 feet, with some areas as high as 3 fee. The storm could also impact Denver International Airport, with flight delays and cancellations on Thursday. School closings or delays could also be possible.

Colorado's Eastern Plains and parts of Northern Colorado will not see as much accumulation with this storm.

There is still some uncertainty with this forecast as the storm track could change, impacting potential totals and timing.

Winter storm slamming Denver and the Front Range, and worst is yet to come

Heavy snow slams Colorado as severe thunderstorms unleash torrential rain across Midwest

A powerful winter storm walloped Colorado on Thursday with heavy snowfall, closing schools, knocking out power and canceling hundreds of flights as thunderstorms threatened the Midwest and Mississippi Valley with potentially damaging hail and tornadoes.

In what experts say could be the worst winter storm the state has seen in years, officials have warned of whiteout conditions on Colorado's mountain roads and across a large portion of the Denver and Boulder metro areas. Sections of major highways, including I-70, have been shut down and authorities have asked people to stay indoors.

Throughout the day and into Friday, up to 3 feet of snow is expected across the Front Range, Sangre de Cristo and San Juan mountain ranges, according to the National Weather Service . Snow will also pile up locally, including in downtown Denver, where officials have opened multiple shelters and warming centers.

"Our city hasn't seen a storm like this in a few years," wrote Denver Mayor Mike Johnston in a post on X Wednesday , shortly before announcing the closure of county and city government offices through Friday, when the storm will begin to taper off.

More than 79,000 utility customers were out of power, Thursday morning according to a database maintained by USA TODAY . And over 800 flights at Denver International Airport have been canceled, according to FlightAware .

Storms threaten tornadoes and large hail across the Midwest

Meteorologists say potential tornadoes and large hail threaten parts of north-central Texas into the Midwest as storms move east over the area Thursday. The greatest overall threat is across eastern Oklahoma, Arkansas and southern Missouri, according to the weather service .

The weather service also issued severe weather warnings across central Illinois as storms with winds of over 50 mph were recorded in the region. Flights at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport were temporarily grounded because of heavy rain and winds.

These storms dropped hail ranging in size from golf balls to baseballs as they moved east across parts of Missouri and Kansas on Tuesday and Wednesday.

They grew to encompass states from northeastern Texas to central Illinois and western Ohio, according to Accuweather , which said major metro areas at risk for severe weather and possible tornadoes Thursday include St. Louis, Dallas, Memphis, Indianapolis, Dayton in Ohio, and Peoria, Illinois.

The threat of severe thunderstorms will decrease by Friday before heading into the Northeast, according to the weather service. By then northern New England and New York State will face rain, while the higher elevations could see snow.

Baseball-size hail slammed Kansas and Missouri

Hail the size of baseballs fell on parts of Kansas and Missouri on Wednesday, including some major metro areas such as Kansas City, stalling traffic as several powerful storms kicked up possible tornadoes.

Across multiple counties there were at least three unconfirmed reports of tornadoes across both states as well as reports of structure damage. The National Weather Service said survey teams would confirm reports on Thursday. One video circulating online appeared to show a massive tornado moving across Kansas overnight .

While the hail threat lessens Thursday, meteorologists said heavy rain and high winds were still possible from northeastern Texas through central Missouri.

LA landslide destroys 1 home, threatens others

A landslide in an expensive Los Angeles neighborhood destroyed one home that was under construction and threatened the structural integrity of several others, authorities said.

Just before 3 a.m. Wednesday, Los Angeles firefighters responded to a call about a large tree and several wires down in the backyard of a house in Sherman Oaks, less than 15 miles from downtown LA, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department . Upon arrival, they found a hillside had slid toward three homes, damaging several and completely flattening one that was being renovated.

No one was hurt in the incident, but several people evacuated from one house. Two residences have been red tagged, meaning the structures are unsafe to enter, and another has been yellow tagged, according to the Department of Building and Safety. Firefighters used pumps to remove water from a swimming pool in the area to take some additional weight and stress off the hillside.

Pictures of the damage show one house completely flattened, another with its pool and deck pulled away, and a third with a pool hanging over the edge of the hillside.

Officials have not identified the cause of the landslide. This year, Los Angeles has had more than twice the amount of rain than normal, and over 600 mudslides have been reported in the city as of early February.
