“Another Trip Around the Sun”– Meaning and Examples of This Common English Phrase

July 14, 2022 By Anthony R. Garcia

Another trip around the sun

The phrase, another trip around the sun , refers to the time period of one year—the length of time it takes for the Earth to travel around our sun. The word trip means journey , which creates the idea that each of us makes a journey around the sun, each year. Therefore, the phrase is often used on a person’s birthday when a person has made “one more” or “another” trip around the sun:

Let us raise a toast to another trip around the sun !

The phrase was recently made popular as the title of a Jimmy Buffet song (2004) about his birthday, although it is unlikely he was the first person to use it this way. The phrase might also be used on anniversaries, New Year’s Eve, or other occasions celebrating “one more year” of life on planet Earth.

birthday

Sunday brought a lot of lying around for the group as we got ready to pack up the rental home that filled with sand trickled in from the beach and countless post-sun naps for two months. We took one last trip to the beach with our puppy, Kahlua, to say goodbye to the shoreline for the season. While I was very grateful to have had this place to escape to, I am very much looking forward to soup season and pulling out my biggest sweaters from storage.

A birthday is one of the most special occasions in one’s life. It’s a day that celebrates you, your accomplishments, and the milestones you’ve crossed in life. Now let’s dive into how you can incorporate this concept into your celebrations.

4) Gifts: One cannot forget the gifts that make the occasion even more special. For a Birthday Trip Around The Sun-themed party, try gifting items that are space-inspired or ones with quotes commemorating the moment . You could gift a compass or a map to signify exploring new frontiers, an astronaut badge or solar-powered gadgets for the practical gift listers out there

May your trip around the sun be filled with love, laughter, and adventure” quote creatively, you’re not just wishing them a happy birthday – you’re reminding them to live life to the fullest every day of their new journey around the sun.

Birthdays are special days for everyone. They are the perfect time to celebrate life, love and happiness. One of the most popular ways of expressing birthday wishes is through “trip around the sun” quotes.

Originating from the Greek philosopher Aristotle’s belief that the Earth was at the center of the universe and all other celestial bodies orbit around it, these quotes highlight a person’s journey around the sun. As such, they serve as a reminder of a person’s age and how much further they’ve traveled on this cosmic journey.

There are different versions of this quote, some more serious than others. The more humorous versions include jokes about aging as one orbits around the sun yet again. For instance: “You’re getting so old that you don’t just need candles on your cake – you need a firefighters’ permit!” And also: “Happy 30th trip around the sun! Don’t worry – 29 is only 3 in Celsius.”

Others have more philosophical undertones – reminding us to be grateful for every second we spend on this earth. According to them, completing another successful year around our magnificent star is an achievement worth celebrating: “May your next trip around the Sun be full of love, joy and blessings.”

These quotes come in handy whether you’re sending out a sentimental message or sharing wisecracks with loved ones on their special day. Some people even use them as Instagram captions or Facebook posts!

As we move through different stages of our lives and experience new challenges along with achievements, may these quotes continue to inspire us to appreciate this beautiful life we’ve been given.

In conclusion, exploring various variations of birthday trip-around-the-sun quotes has been not just enlightening but also entertaining. These phrases remind us that like planets revolving around stars, our lives revolve around years spent on this planet – each one an opportunity to learn something new or make unforgettable memories. Whether we choose serious or funny caption or quote, may these words serve as a reminder to live full lives and cherish every trip around the sun.

As an expert in astronomy and space exploration, I can tell you that the quote “I’ve traveled around the sun x amount of times” is a fun and accurate way to celebrate a birthday. In reality, we all travel around the sun once every year as our planet orbits it. This quote emphasizes how much we’ve accomplished and experienced during that time. It’s also a great reminder of the vastness of our universe and how lucky we are to be alive on this beautiful planet. So, celebrate your next birthday by acknowledging your journey around the sun!

The idea of celebrating birthdays based on the concept of traveling around the sun was first introduced by German scholar, Johannes Kepler in the late 16th century. Prior to this, birthdays were often celebrated on religious or astrological occasions.

20 trips around the sun

Another Trip Around The Sun

Yesterday was my 60 th birthday, and I am here to report that after years of searching, I believe I may have finally hit upon a way of thinking about aging that doesn’t make my insides curdle, and find me staring at the ceiling in a cold sweat in the middle of the night.

I think I have actually hit upon a consoling metaphor that makes me feel happy about taking one more trip around the sun.

And it is actually that very idea of “taking another trip around the sun” that has captured my imagination.

Here is the thinking that is making me feel happy: Everyone is born on some random day on this pretty blue marble. It spins in space around the sun, with us on it, and when it gets back to that random date where we started, we have completed one year and have a birthday.

On that day we get to pause, and if we like, kind of “assess” the ride. Like getting off a roller coaster and going, “Whew! That was, (fill in the blank): exciting, intense, exhilarating, frightening, nauseating, etc.

Every year has its particular ups and downs and ins and outs. Within each year there are times of quiet and times of turbulence. Since this roller coaster ride lasts a whole year, lots of different things can happen.

But when it slows down as it nears the “born on” day, the starting point, you get a chance to get off and think about the ride that just ended. You get a chance to look around and see who shared your ride: those who shared most of it, or only parts of it; those who made the ride more joyful and more interesting; those who made the ride easier and more comfortable, and those who made it a bit more difficult.

And this is what I have been doing for the past few days: assessing my ride, taking inventory.

So here is this year’s assessment:

I am healthy and vibrant and full of energy. My relationships are amazing. I get to do work that I not only love, but feel is the work I was put on this earth to do.

I feel loved and valued and appreciated by all the people who have shared this year’s ride with me. I cannot think of a single person who has made my life difficult in any way.

This has been a sweet, sweet ride. I feel not just happy, but ebullient. I want to get back on the ride and go again!

Can we please go again? Please??? I want to take yet another trip around the sun. If I make it, this one will be my 60 th go-round. Some people don’t get to go that many times, but I’ve been lucky enough to have had lots of rides. And I want many, many more!

I want a chance to experience ups and downs and ins and outs and backwards and forwards and fast and slow and easy and hard and happy and sad. Can we please just go again?

And can all the people who have made this year’s ride so amazing and wonderful and joyous, can they all come too?

The other night I paused over my candles, took a big breath in, closed my eyes, and made my wish. As the smoke rose from the candles, I took my seat, strapped myself in, and prepared for yet another trip around the sun.

Trip Around The Sun by Jimmy Buffett and Martina McBride

20 trips around the sun

Songfacts®:

 • Not only was Jimmy Buffett's License To Chill his first #1 album on the Country chart, it was also his first to top the Billboard 200. Several country stars join Buffett on the album, including Martina McBride for the duet "Trip Around The Sun." On the birthday-themed ballad, the duo contemplates another year gone by, remembering failed resolutions and wondering if they made the right choices. They find comfort knowing the world will keep spinning no matter what they do and decide to dispense with the yearly resolutions except for one: "That I'll never make another one, Just enjoy this ride on my trip around the sun."
 • This was written by Al Anderson , former frontman for the country/blues rock band NRBQ, and singer-songwriters Stephen Bruton and Sharon Vaughn. Anderson, who also played guitar on License To Chill , recorded his own version of the song for his 2006 album After Hours . When asked by NPR if there was a standout tune on the record, he replied: "Only 'Trip Around the Sun' in a heart beat. This girl left a note saying that she was going to drive herself off a bridge in Baltimore, and she heard the song on the radio and it stopped her from committing suicide. So it made me feel good since most of my songs have the opposite effect."
 • This peaked at #20 on the Country chart.
 • The music video was shot near Charleston, South Carolina, and features the singers enjoying a beachside celebration with friends. Buffett is also seen flying one of his own planes, a 1941 Boeing E75 Stearman.

Trip Around the Sun Lyrics

Here I'm singin' happy birthday Better think about the about the wish I make This year gone by ain't been a piece of cake Everyday's a revolution Pull it together and it comes undone Just one more candle and a trip around the sun I'm just hangin' on while this old world keeps spinning And it's good to know it's out of my control If there's one thing that I've learned from all this livin' Is that it wouldn't change a thing if I let go No you never see it comin' Always wind up wonderin' where it went Only time will tell if it was time well spent It's another revelation Celebrating what I should have done With these souvenirs of my trip around the sun

I'm just hangin' on while this old world keeps spinning And it's good to know it's out of my control If there's one thing that I've learned from all this livin' Is that it wouldn't change a thing if I let go Yes I'll make a resolution That I'll never make another one Just enjoy this ride on my trip around the sun Just enjoy this ride

20 Birthday Trip Ideas for Every Type of Traveler

Travel is the best gift — here are 20 birthday trip ideas to help you celebrate.

20 trips around the sun

Happy birthday to you! When it comes to celebrating another trip around the sun, the only thing better than presents and cake is traveling (but don't let anyone stop you from having all three). Read on for the best birthday trip ideas from sea to shining sea — and beyond.

1. Tulum, Mexico

Gather a group of friends and enter a new year of life with a clear mind after spending your birthday in the spiritual center of Tulum . Located along Mexico's gorgeous Riviera Maya, the Caribbean coastline, replete with crystal clear waters and white sand beaches, means you'll welcome another year on Earth in one of its most beautiful locales. Known for its yoga retreats, jungle cenotes, sacred ceremonies, and Mayan ruins, Tulum is the perfect place to center your mind and reconnect with nature. The city also has plenty of hotels , restaurants, and shopping to keep you busy when you want to leave the peace of the jungles and beaches behind.

2. New York, New York

You can't beat the energy of New York City for marking a major milestone, especially growing older. Plus, the city that never sleeps is guaranteed to keep you young because there's always something new to see and do. No matter how you hope to celebrate, New York City has it — from live entertainment and gorgeous green spaces to Instagram-famous foodie finds. Every season has something different to offer, so the Big Apple makes for a festive birthday trip idea no matter your birthday month.

Book a room at the Renaissance New York Times Square Hotel for a stay in the heart of all the action, where you can fall asleep among the glow of neon lights — and enjoy a birthday fit for a movie scene.

3. Laguna Beach, California

For a truly pampered birthday trip idea, head to Laguna Beach , where you'll find the ultimate Southern California escape, complete with sunshine, surf, shopping, and spa treatments. A quirky yet chic beach town about an hour south of Los Angeles , Laguna is home to surf shops, art galleries, and eateries featuring everything from to-go tacos to fine dining — it truly has something for everyone.

There's no better place to stay than the oceanfront Montage Laguna Beach , where your party can share a private villa or book spacious adjoining suites, enjoy views for miles from the stunning Mosaic Pool , take a scenic stroll along immaculately manicured paths, or hit one of the area's most beautiful stretches of white-sand beach. Enjoy luxurious treatments at Spa Montage , from massages using California wildflowers to romantic couples' experiences.

4. Maui, Hawaii

If Hawaii has long been on your "someday" list, let your birthday provide the excuse you've been waiting for to finally book that flight and just go for it. Regardless of your age, Hawaii has lots to do, great places to eat, and cultural experiences to enrich your global education, while the greens and blues of Maui 's tropical landscape offer a feast for the eyes. Try something new on your visit, whether that's learning to surf or sampling a spoonful of purple poi. To really celebrate your birthday with a bang, make sure a traditional hula performance is on the itinerary.

5. Train Journey Through Italy

Michele Rossetti / Getty Images

If you know of a better way to celebrate a birthday than all the pizza, pasta, gelato, and wine your heart desires, then please alert the presses. Otherwise, head straight to Italy for a travel birthday bonanza — there are few better ways to explore the dreamscape that is Italia than to see as much of the boot as you can by train. Include highlights like Florence , the Cinque Terre , and Tuscany (Italy's heavenly wine region) for the kind of trip that might make you pick up scrapbooking again.

6. charlotte, north carolina.

If melt-in-your-mouth BBQ and outdoor adventures are right up your alley, look no further than Charlotte for the ideal birthday trip destination. Home to the U.S. National Whitewater Center — where you can find whitewater rafting, biking, zip lines, live music, and craft brews all in one action-packed location — and the fragrant pits of drool-worthy Noble Smoke , Charlotte promises great eats and a great time.

Looking for more? Charlotte is also home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame , the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art , and the NoDa Art District . If you're traveling with a group, head to Optimist Hall , where everyone can enjoy a meal of their choosing from local food vendors.

7. Santa Fe, New Mexico

If all you want to do on your birthday is relax and unwind, plan an indulgent spa retreat to the American Southwest and put Santa Fe at the top of your list. At the Ojo Santa Fe Spa Resort , you'll find spring-fed waters and the opportunity to soak in blissful thermal pools following a top-notch spa treatment; healthy, nourishing farm-to-table meals are also included with your stay. It's the perfect getaway, especially for a solo birthday trip or a quiet retreat with a loved one.

8. Mykonos, Greece

If you really want to fete your birthday in style, there's no better place to do so than the party destination of Mykonos . Located in Greece's Cyclades islands, Mykonos captures the picturesque beaches and white churches most people associate with a Greek Island vacation . But, what makes this place most appealing for birthday trips, especially for groups of friends, is its famous beach parties and thriving nightlife scene, allowing travelers to celebrate from sun-up to sun-down. Check in to The Wild Hotel by Interni for exclusive private access to the beautiful Kalafatis Beach , located below the hotel's cliffs.

9. Vail, Colorado

If you enjoy being active, Vail should top your birthday trip ideas list. You can snowboard and ski in the winter on Vail's renowned slopes — and who doesn't want to indulge in the pleasures of après ski for their birthday? — or hike among blankets of wildflowers in the spring and summer. Book a birthday dinner in a woodsy lodge for the full experience.

10. Backpack Through Thailand

Fly the distance to Southeast Asia for an unforgettable adventure packed with amazing views, flavorful dishes, and a welcoming culture, both from local residents and the country's large community of international ex-pats. Thailand is a popular dream trip destination for many, so what better reason to plan a trip than for your birthday?

Whether you go solo, with a friend or partner, or with a group of friends, Thailand is sure to please — the reason for its popularity among travelers is immediately obvious upon touchdown. Plus, Americans can stretch their dollars further here than many other places in the world, making it a great place to splurge on an all-out birthday bash.

11. Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is a classic destination for celebrations of every kind, and birthdays are no exception. Whether you're in it to win big at the casinos or splurge on world-class shows, birthdays present a much-needed excuse to run wild in Sin City. For a little balance, consider adding on a road trip through Nevada's deserts , stopping to check out roadside art and Gold Rush ghost towns along the way.

12. Chicago, Illinois

With lots to do, see, and eat in Chicago — and sprawling views from spots like Skydeck Chicago at Willis Tower — it's a great place to ring in another year. Get out on the water or spend your days exploring museums and galleries, depending on what suits your fancy. And no worries if your birthday's in the winter: after ice skating along the Maggie Daley Park Ice Skating Ribbon, you can warm up with a piping-hot deep-dish pizza, a Chicago classic.

Swissotel Chicago provides well-situated digs located within walking distance of many attractions, including the shops of Magnificent Mile. Book a corner room for views of the Chicago River, Navy Pier, and Lake Michigan.

13. Toronto, Canada

Kristjan Veski/Travel + Leisure

Those looking to skip the long flights often associated with international travel should consider our neighbor to the north for their next birthday destination. Toronto 's thriving music, food, and entertainment landscape means visitors never lack fun things to do in Canada's largest city. Explore the culture of the 6ix by taking a street art crawl or spending the day at one of the city's various museums and galleries. If you're a spring or summer baby, turn another year older at a Toronto music or film festival. And, of course, there's plenty of fall foliage and winter fun to enjoy in the colder months, when you can spend your birthday at the Toronto Light Festival or do a nearby winter getaway .

14. River Cruise Through Europe on U by Uniworld

London , Paris, Rome — sure, these are great places to turn another year older in Europe, but they've been done before. Instead, visit a lesser-known side of the continent by boarding a U by Uniworld cruise and rolling down the Rhine or floating down the Danube. Not your Grandma's stuffy river cruise, this line provides a fresh take on a method of traveling that's totally under-appreciated by everyone under 60 — built especially for the young and young-at-heart.

Whether you sail between Amsterdam and Brussels or explore Eastern Europe on a cruise connecting Vienna and Prague, you'll never forget a birthday spent meandering Europe's scenic rivers on a luxurious cruise with locally-inspired food, fun-loving fellow passengers, and tons of activities, from biking or walking tours at the port to silent discos and stargazing onboard.

15. Savannah, Georgia

Ivey Redding/Travel + Leisure

No place does southern charm quite like Savannah . Stroll along the cobblestone streets, shaded by canopies of live oaks aged hundreds of years, and pop into the many award-winning eateries, like The Grey , housed in a former Greyhound Bus station. By night, book a ghost tour for some serious spooks (there are a ton of companies to choose from), after you've treated yourself to a generous scoop of Leopold's Ice Cream , of course. The Plant Riverside District is another main attraction, packed with shops, galleries, entertainment, restaurants and bars, nightlife, and a hotel, the JW Marriott Savannah — all housed within a repurposed power plant, now a one-stop-shop for merrymaking.

16. Napa Valley, California

(Almost) any age can appreciate a cultured jaunt through wine country, which explains why it's a long-popular birthday destination. Between the picturesque landscapes, enchanting towns, award-winning restaurants, and world-class wine, Napa Valley is an easy choice for a birthday to remember — and a real crowd-pleaser of a birthday trip idea if you're hoping to convince a group to join you.

17. Machu Picchu, Peru

More adventurous travelers might consider spending a birthday visiting Machu Picchu . Hike, bike, raft, or zip line to the ancient Incan city on one of the various local tours that take thousands of people to Machu Picchu each year. If you're a more low-key traveler but still want the experience without doing the whole three-day Inca Trail hike, take a scenic train ride from Cusco instead. Once you're acclimated, see why the famous Incan citadel, high in the Andes Mountains, is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Breathtaking views and complex stone architecture make this ancient astronomical observatory a must-see.

Before and after traveling to Machu Picchu, you'll most likely stay in the nearby town of Aguas Calientes, which offers plenty of lodging, eateries, shopping, its namesake thermal springs (which feel especially good after a long hike), and the Mariposario de Machupicchu butterfly sanctuary. You can also check out Cusco , a charming city full of hotels, restaurants, and UNESCO World Heritage architecture.

18. The Palm Beaches, Florida

Avalon / Getty Images

The Sunshine State promises a laid-back, fun-filled visit any time of year. While there are great places to visit in Florida from the Keys to the Panhandle, the Palm Beaches are Florida's crown jewel. Packed with art and culture , outdoor activities, world-class shopping, picturesque beaches, and every sort of entertainment, the area has something for everyone, whether you're looking for a chill escape in Lake Worth Beach , buzzing nightlife in Delray Beach , or a glamorous vacation spent rubbing elbows with the rich and famous in Palm Beach .

Want to really up the ante? Miami is just a one-hour ride away on the luxurious Brightline train. Head even further south by car and you'll hit the Florida Keys , where anything goes — especially on birthdays.

19. Alexandria, Virginia

Getty Images / Lonely Planet Images

To enjoy your birthday to the fullest, head to underrated and affordable Old Town Alexandria , where you'll find both fascinating history and mouthwatering eats, as well as a happy marriage of Southern hospitality and mid-Atlantic sophistication. Stay at the Hotel Indigo Old Town Alexandria , located mere steps from easily walkable King Street, Old Town's main drag, complete with a clean, nautical vibe.

The city is charming, artsy, and packed with irresistible boutiques to shop in; best of all, Washington, D.C. , is just a 25-minute ride away on the Metro (and it'll only set you back about $5) — or you can simply enjoy the view of our nation's capital from across the Potomac River.

20. Reykjavík, Iceland

If unrivaled sights and some of the best hot springs in the world are on your birthday trip ideas list, you can't go wrong with Iceland's capital. Go for the city's famous lagoons and swimming pools , stay for Reykjavík's museums, galleries, theaters, and cafés. Enjoy local game at one of the nearby restaurants or go whale watching and sightseeing in Iceland's natural wonder. For the full experience, try horseback riding, glacier climbing, river rafting, and caving, among other popular activities.

20 Cheapest Places to Travel Around the World in 2024

Find your budget-friendly vacation in the U.S. or beyond.

The travel bug continues to bite in 2024, and data indicates growth in both domestic and international trips, along with a cost increase for hotels and transportation. But don't worry as it’s still possible to take an economical vacation whether you want to travel near or far.

Kayak , one of the world’s leading travel search engines, shared with Travel + Leisure a list of domestic and international destinations for low-cost trips. To determine the most wallet-friendly locations, the company analyzed flight searches from July 2023 through December 2023 for travel during 2024. The top 250 most-clicked destinations with the lowest average combined flight and hotel price were considered, excluding outliers based on certain criteria such as travel restrictions and security concerns. Prices and percentages are on average and subject to change.

With that in mind, here are some of the most affordable places to travel in the U.S. and around the world in 2024.

Denver, Colorado

With an average price of $486 for flight and hotel, the Mile High City features a walkable downtown with restaurants, museums, entertainment, and shopping. Low-cost rail service from Denver International Airport to Union Station is not only convenient, but it also takes travelers to the historic Beaux-Arts terminal, where there’s an array of restaurants, stores, and a hotel. Visitors can catch a major league baseball game in town or a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre .

Chicago, Illinois

In addition to its excellent restaurants, stunning architecture cruise on the Chicago River, and Navy Pier amusement area, Chicago offers museums like the Art Institute and the Museum of Science and Industry . For an average price of $493 for hotel and flight, visitors can enjoy low-cost fun on Lake Michigan’s beaches, the Riverwalk , and Grant Park . Another favorite is Millennium Park, where the gleaming Cloud Gate sculpture — nicknamed “The Bean” — provides a popular photo op.

Bike, boat, or jog at the Chain of Lakes Regional Park , or walk the enclosed elevated pathways of the 9.5-mile Skyway .

If you visit between March and December, browse the Portland Saturday Market for art, crafts, and food. Book fans will want to check out Powell’s City of Books , the largest used and new bookstore in the world.

Charlotte, North Carolina

You don’t have to be a car fan to enjoy the Nascar Hall of Fame , where interactive exhibits and racing simulators entertain and educate. Your $512 average cost for flight and hotel will go far with meals at The Market at 7th Street , an indoor food court. At Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden , spend a relaxing day among flowers, fountains, and walking paths. There’s more action at Whitewater Center , which has more than 30 land and water activities, including whitewater rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, and more.

Orlando, Florida

For an average of $516 for flight and hotel, you can get to Orlando, where you’ll find there’s more to enjoy than the famous theme parks. Get to know the historic Winter Park area on a cruise among lakes, canals, opulent homes, and wildlife. Rent a pedal-powered swan boat at Lake Eola in downtown Orlando or stroll through Lake Nona Sculpture Garden , an outdoor art gallery set among lush landscaping. When you get hungry, browse and nosh on fresh fruit and local specialties at one of Orlando’s farmers markets .

Tampa, Florida

Walk along Tampa’s 2.6-mile Riverwalk , visit the Tampa Museum of Art , hop on the Pirate Water Taxi , or tour the American Victory Ship . Save on these attractions and more with a Riverwalk Pass , making the most of the average flight and hotel cost of $534. At Armature Works on the river, you can grab a snack, shop, or enjoy the view. Take a walking tour of historic Ybor City, once the Cigar Capital of the World. Today, it's home to vintage buildings and Cuban restaurants.

Dallas, Texas

For an average flight and hotel cost of $553, you'll touch down in Dallas, where you can get a bird’s-eye view of the city from Reunion Tower . Then, head to the Arts District , which is home to museums and Klyde Warren Park . Hungry? Food trucks are there every day, and you might catch some live music or a fitness class. Visit one of the many Dallas parks or experience Trinity Groves for dining, entertainment, and views of the Trinity River.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The historic City of Brotherly Love offers museums, Independence National Historical Park , and public art such as the Rocky statue and Love sculpture for free and entertaining ways to get to know the city. For an average of $564 for flight and hotel, a trip to Philadelphia is also a delight for foodies. At Reading Terminal Market , there’s food from around the world along with vendors selling handicrafts. The open-air South 9th Street Italian Market ’s gourmet selection includes cheeses, meats, and chocolates — fun for both browsing and dining.

Mexico City, Mexico

For an average cost of $673 for flight and hotel, Mexico City offers an exciting getaway with museums, parks, restaurants, and history. You can spend a day in Bosque de Chapultepec , Mexico City’s largest park featuring a zoo, monuments, a lake with pedal boats, restaurants, and museums, including the Museo Nacional de Antropología . Toronto, Canada

Both locals and visitors enjoy St. Lawrence Market in the historic Old Town, where there’s fresh produce, handcrafts, and gourmet specialties. But for an average flight and hotel cost of $692, Toronto offers even more to see and do, from lively nightlife and sports events. Browse the street art in the Kensington Market neighborhood, explore the Queen Street West area, and check out the shops, galleries, and dining spots in the popular Distillery District . You'll also want to visit Casa Loma , a 1914 castle in the heart of Toronto.

Montreal, Canada

For an average flight and hotel cost of $705, your trip to Montreal might start with one of the city’s famous bagels. Still hungry? Head to the open-air Jean-Talon Market in Little Italy, which sells fresh produce, spices, chocolates, cheeses, and more. The Celarain Lighthouse at Punta Sur Eco Beach Park is popular with hikers who come for the view and visitors who enjoy the museum.

Vancouver, Canada

Arrive in Vancouver for an average flight and hotel price of $863. One of your first stops in the city should be Stanley Park , an urban oasis with a nearly 20-mile seawall, views of the waterfront, walking paths, forest trails, and more — all for free. Granville Island , popular with locals and visitors, features boutiques, entertainment, restaurants, and an indoor public market . For skiing, ice skating, and year-round dining and entertainment, head to Grouse Mountain , which also has a zip line, a cinema, a wildlife refuge, and spectacular views.

"That Was 20 Years Ago, And I’m Sure It's Even Worse Now": People Are Sharing The Popular Travel Destinations They Did Not Enjoy

"The most fascinating part of the whole vacation was realizing that many people live for this place. The crowds…the prices…the lines. Never again for us."

Hannah Loewentheil

BuzzFeed Staff

When you travel to a new place, you probably leave home with high expectations. After all, you never know — you could be embarking upon your new favorite destination. But chances are, you haven't been head over heels for every locale you've visited.

So I asked the BuzzFeed Community to tell me about a destination that left them feeling underwhelmed. Here's what people said, along with comments from some redditors who love to travel.

1. "san francisco. the city was so crowded, i didn’t like the food, and the homelessness we saw all around us was extremely sad.".

Chinatown in San Francisco

2. "Virginia Beach. I love beaches, but Virginia Beach was murky and way overcrowded, and there was not much to do. It’s also near a military base, so having the constant military planes overhead was just unnerving."

3. "New York City. I remember coming up the escalator from Penn Station and immediately smelling pee. I recall walking streets that were lined with huge piles of stinky trash bags. It was so dirty everywhere, I was afraid to touch anything. That was 20 years ago, and I’m sure it's even worse now."

4. "Cabo San Lucas. There were massive ships blocking the horizon, panhandlers who would stand in front of you so you couldn’t see the ocean, and hordes of people getting in the way at every snorkeling spot. There were beach chairs packed like sardines. I love other parts of Mexico, but Cabo was generally an underwhelming experience."

5. "Venice. This Italian city was so crowded and overrun with tourists that I couldn't even stop to enjoy the sights and experiences around me."

6. "Disney World. My whole family was so excited about this Florida vacation, and we could not wait to get there. But we spent more money than planned (we still can’t even stomach how much we spent), we fought more as a family than we ever had, and we stood in line after line after line. The most fascinating part of the whole vacation was realizing that many people live for this place. The crowds…the prices…the lines. Never again for us."

7. "Bora Bora in French Polynesia. Yes, it’s so beautiful, but there’s really nothing to do beyond the beach. And you have to stay at one of the super-expensive resorts to actually make a trip there worthwhile. The other destinations in the Society Islands were more fun and still just as gorgeous."

Overwater bungalows extend from a wooden pier into a calm sea under a sunny sky

8. "Egypt. I was so excited to go, but it was the worst place I’ve ever traveled to. Everyone tried to scam me relentlessly, from the airport clerk to the taxi drivers and the pyramids tour guide. People will tell you they recognize you from the day before, and they'll try to get you to ride their donkey and follow you even when you say multiple times that you’re not interested. It was impossible to walk half a block from my hotel to try to buy water without people constantly stopping me trying to get money in some way and some form. It was absolutely exhausting."

9. "Tulum, Mexico. It has beautiful beaches but is otherwise completely devoid of character. It's expensive and boring (unless your only goal is to party with other tourists)."

10. "Sydney. I found it to be a very boring city. I hate that I wasted so much of my time in Australia there. Bondi Beach was just okay, and seeing the iconic landmarks like the Opera House felt like checking things off a box. After that, I wasn't sure how to spend my time. The city has no personality. As soon as I hopped on a train west, I saw incredible landscapes and met truly genuine folks. You can do Sydney in a day or two. I wish I’d headed into the bush the minute my plane landed."

Crowded beach with people sunbathing and swimming, cityscape in the background

11. "Bali. This Indonesian island is still great in many ways, but it is increasingly overrun by obnoxious tourists and expats. I'm talking vapid, entitled influencer (or wannabe influencer) kinds of tourists/expats who wait in long lines to take selfies at historical/spiritual sites that they don't bother to learn anything about."

12. "Amsterdam. It was so crowded, chaotic, and easy to get run over by other tourists on bikes who've never ridden before. I feel like it's romanticized a lot, but the first time I visited, I was genuinely disappointed. It's definitely dirty on the streets, and the canals have a lot of waste drifting in them."

13. "Paris. What a colossally overrated city. I’ve always heard that Paris syndrome was a real thing, but I wasn’t prepared for how disappointed I was actually going to feel after visiting. The crowds were atrocious, the locals are not friendly, to say the least (even though I could speak some French), and everything was absolutely filthy. And this is all coming from a San Francisco native!"

A bustling city street scene at night with illuminated shop signs and a crowd of pedestrians

14. "Portland, Oregon. My best friend and I drove across the country from Florida to Washington, stopping for national parks, iconic eateries, and more. We read so many good things about Portland online, but in reality, it was one of the most depressing places I’ve ever seen. The hotel itself was awesome, but outside those doors, the downtown area was awful. There was tons of open drug use, naked people on the sidewalk, and the smell of bodily fluids everywhere. It was too much. We saw other parts of Oregon and loved it (especially Cannon Beach), but Portland was a major disappointment."

15. "Santorini was pretty disappointing, in my opinion. I feel like the photos I've seen online must have been photoshopped. I expected beautiful views but ended up having to crop graffiti and dirty buildings from the backgrounds of my pictures. It was also so expensive. The cheapest lunch option I found was a small wrap for 11 euros. It really felt like a tourist trap. Rhodes, on the other hand, was gorgeous and affordable. This island was home to beautiful beaches and old medieval buildings. I would avoid spending much time in Santorini, considering how much more expensive it is than other, equally beautiful Greek islands."

Crowd of people gathered in Santorini overlooking the sea and islands

16. "The Alhambra in Granada, Spain. It was so crowded, especially considering how small it actually is. I’d seen so many photos of the Alhambra where it looked so stunning, and I envisioned it being this serene palace. In reality, though, it was beyond packed with tour groups. Perhaps this is a good instance of how inaccurately social media can represent popular tourist destinations."

Group of people under an ornate archway, looking toward a building's intricate facade

17. "Atlantis in the Bahamas. You have this image of a luxury resort before visiting, but upon arrival, you find this incredibly overcrowded place (and that’s *before* the cruise people arrive and completely take over the property during daytime hours). Anytime there was an issue with service, they would blame it on 'island time.' If one more person said the phrase 'island time,' I was going to lose it. We had thousand-dollar excursions, private cabanas, and dinner reservations all cut short due to island time. Paradise Island was beautiful, but we're never going back to Atlantis."

18. "Naples. I did a big European trip after college and spent about a month in Italy. Naples was EASILY the worst place we visited. Seedy, run-down, trashy, unsafe, you name it. Would never go back."

19. "Barcelona was disappointing to me. If you aren't a big drinker and don't want to do a lot of shopping, the city is kind of boring. Spend a day on the beach and another day touring, and you've pretty much done it all. That being said, going to La Sagrada Família was incredible. It made the rest of the boring trip totally worthwhile."

Crowded urban street with pedestrians walking, trees lining the path, and kiosks on the sides

20. "Nashville. Traffic is a nightmare, and you cannot enjoy the downtown area because it is so loud. All of the bars have music blaring out into the street, and it just blends together into one high-decibel sound wave. Not to mention, there are people who are homeless passed out in the middle of the sidewalks. The city reeks of urine and sewage, and on weekends, you cannot even walk without getting bumped into. Don’t even get me started on all the party buses, tractors, and pedal taverns that further congest things and add to the noise, with everyone in town for sorority events and bachelorette parties."

21. "Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. It's very artificial feeling, and the whole city has a crowded amusement park feel. There's nothing eye-catching. It feels like a lesser clone of Singapore."

22. " Las Vegas , for me. I know it's a very popular tourist spot in the US, but I just can't stand going there. Like most people, I was excited to go at first, but just taking a big whiff of the air there makes me gag now. The streets can be really dirty, and traffic is terrible. It is really dry, and I personally can't stand not being near a body of water."

23. "The Big Island of Hawaii . I recently went on a trip to the island. So many people rave about the views and the hiking trails past beautiful waterfalls. I was there for two weeks and spent roughly half of my time driving. Any waterfall 'hikes' were more aptly just short walks from the parking lot and up a couple of stairs. The volcanoes were cool, the weather was nice, and the views were okay, but I don’t think I would spend the time or the money to go back."

Visitors beside a rocky stream with a waterfall in a lush landscape

24. "Costa Rica. This country felt like a tourist trap. In many places, you have no option but to stay at an all-inclusive resort and purchase travel packages for adventure sports like zip lining, horseback riding, and more. There isn't much opportunity to deviate from these packages, and it's also very expensive. I felt that it was hard to learn anything about the local or Indigenous culture."

When is daylight saving time 2024? Millions have sunsets after 6 pm as time change approaches

20 trips around the sun

Do you feel it in the air? Spring is coming, and the start of longer daylight hours is well underway.

And with daylight saving time starting in March, most Americans will soon have even more hours in the sun. Even ahead of of the time change, there are already cities in every continental U.S. time zone that are reporting sunset times after 6 p.m. as the Earth and the Northern Hemisphere begins its tilt toward the sun.

The time adjustment affects the daily lives of hundreds of millions of Americans, prompting clock changes, contributing to less sleep in the days following and, of course, later sunsets.

Here's what to know about the start of daylight saving time in 2024.

When is daylight saving time in 2024?

Daylight saving time will begin for 2024 on Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m. local time, when our clocks will go ahead one hour, part of the twice-annual time change that affects millions, but not all , Americans.

Have the days been getting longer?

The winter solstice, which occurs annually on Dec. 21, is the day with the shortest daylight hours each year. Since then, the days have been gradually getting longer.

Because the sun rises in the east and sets in the west , cities that are located eastward experience sunrise before more more westward cities.

Ahead of daylight saving time, which starts this month, some areas are already experiencing later sunset times. On the East Coast, parts of states like Maine , New Hampshire , Vermont , New York and Connecticut are already recording sunsets after 5:30 p.m. ET, according to TimeandDate.com .

Sunset times get later as you move westward though time zones, and cities on the western edge of Eastern Standard Time like Detroit and Indianapolis have sunsets around 6:30 p.m. ET.

The same concept plays out in each of the continental United States' four time zones, with cities on the easternmost edge of each time zone recording sunset times roughly between 5:30 and 5:45 p.m. local time.

What is daylight saving time?

Daylight saving time is the time between March and November when most Americans adjust their clocks by one hour.

We lose an hour in March (as opposed to gaining an hour in the fall) to accommodate for more daylight in the summer evenings. When we "fall back" in November, it's to add more daylight in the mornings.

When is the spring equinox?

In the Northern Hemisphere, the vernal, or spring equinox is March 19, marking the start of the spring season.

When does daylight saving time end in 2024?

In 2024, daylight saving time will end for the year at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, Nov. 3. It will pick up again next year on Sunday, March 9, 2025.

Is daylight saving time ending permanently?

The push to stop changing clocks was put before Congress in the last couple of years, when the U.S. Senate unanimously approved the Sunshine Protection Act in 2022, a bill that would make daylight saving time permanent. However, it did not pass in the U.S. House of Representatives and, therefore, was not signed into law by President Joe Biden.

A 2023 version of the act remained idle in Congress as well.

Does every state observe daylight saving time?

Not all states and U.S. territories participate in daylight saving time.

Hawaii and Arizona (with the exception of the Navajo Nation) do not observe daylight saving time, and neither do the territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Because of its desert climate, Arizona doesn't follow daylight saving time. After most of the U.S. adopted the Uniform Time Act, the state figured that there wasn't a good reason to adjust clocks to make sunset occur an hour later during the hottest months of the year.

The Navajo Nation, which spans Arizona, Utah and New Mexico, does follow daylight saving time.

Hawaii is the other state that does not observe daylight saving time. Because of its proximity to the equator, there is not a lot of variance between hours of daylight during the year.
