Musicals in Berlin

Fireworks light the sky above the Brandenburg Gate shortly after midnight in Berlin, Friday, Jan. 1, 2016.

A musical tour of Europe's great cities: Berlin

Our series ends in the German capital with Berg, Busoni, Bowie and Bernstein.

Also in this series: London | Paris | Venice | Helsinki | Prague | Hamburg | Rome | Vienna | Amsterdam

In putting Berlin under the microscope in the last of our post-Brexit tours of the great cities of Europe, it seems that all roads lead to Kurt Weill. “Berlin will forever be associated with the turbulent times of the 20th century,” says @ abkquan , whose suggestions have been a mainstay of these surveys. “The Weimar period produced the definitive Berlin work – Weill’s Threepenny Opera with its many familiar tunes, especially with Lotte Lenya singing Jenny.”

The Threepenny Opera , a collaboration between Weill and Bertolt Brecht based on 18th-century dramatist John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera , was premiered at Berlin’s Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in 1928, and after some initial resistance was a great success, vindicating Weill’s ambition to reclaim opera as an art form for the people (though Berlin’s elite of course delighted in its scabrous tale of cutthroats and prostitutes).

@ abkquan ’s point about the cultural and intellectual richness of Germany in the 1920s is well made. While society was in ferment and the postwar economy hopelessly unstable, writers, artists and composers were producing urgent, vivid work. Far from inhibiting artists, the instability and danger proved an inspiration, and fundamental questions about the future direction of Germany were being asked.

Much of the musical excitement of the period can be traced back to the pianist, composer and conductor Ferruccio Busoni , who was born in Italy but made Berlin his home from his late 20s until his death in 1924 at the age of 58. As well as a wonderful pianist, Busoni was at the forefront of introducing contemporary music to Berlin and was also a great teacher of composition, numbering Weill among his pupils.

@ abkquan calls Doktor Faust Busoni’s “summation work”, and that was certainly the composer’s ambition. He spent almost a decade working on it, but it was still not quite finished at his death. Rarely staged, not often recorded and generally regarded as brilliant but uneven – like so much of Busoni’s work – it deserves a hearing.

Busoni’s epic piano concerto , premiered in Berlin in 1904, is also a wondrous piece – its 70-minute length and need for a male chorus in the final movement are presumably the reasons it isn’t performed more often. Busoni also wrote for solo piano , though these many works have been overshadowed by his transcriptions of Bach . A composer in urgent need of reappraisal. Busoni, that is, not Bach.

For a lover of classical music, Berlin is perhaps the most rewarding city in the world. @ PositivistDinosaur certainly thinks so. “[It] not only supports its justly celebrated orchestra but three opera houses, all with ticket prices a fraction of those in London, and goodness knows how many other musical venues. This summer, Iréne Theorin was singing Brunnhilde there at the same time that Nina Stemme was singing Isolde 400 metres down the road. Is there any other city where that would have been possible?”

@ PositivistDinosaur links this glorious present with the intense excitement of the period after the first world war. “The interwar years,” he points out, “saw the premieres [in Berlin] of operatic works by Berg, Hindemith, Milhaud and Schreker, in that extraordinary decade or so of creativity before the Nazis’ rise to power and their banning of ‘degenerate music’.”

Alban Berg’s Wozzeck was first performed at the Berlin State Opera in 1925 under its music director Erich Kleiber, a champion of Berg’s music. It was the banning of Berg’s Lulu in 1934 that led Kleiber to resign his post, leave Germany and begin a peripatetic exile that eventually ended in Argentina – and the reason his son Karl, who grew up to be an equally formidable conductor, became known as Carlos . Erich Kleiber was not Jewish, but chose to give up plum posts in Berlin and at La Scala because of fascism. Staunch defenders of Richard Strauss and Wilhelm Furtwängler please note.

Paul Hindemith’s relationship with the Nazi authorities was more ambivalent – he made various attempts at compromise before opting for exile in Switzerland in 1938. His opera Mathis der Maler , based on the life of the German Renaissance artist Matthias Grünewald, was a metaphor for his own struggle to maintain artistic freedom under the Nazis. While working on the opera, Hindemith, who taught at a music school in Berlin, also published a symphony with the same title. Perhaps not surprisingly, the symphony tends to get more outings than the opera.

@ abkquan brackets Hans Pfitzner’s 1917 opera Palestrina and Mathis der Maler together as works that set the freedom of the individual artist against an overbearing regime. In Pfitzner’s case, this becomes complicated because he made an accommodation with the Nazis far more damaging than that of contemporaries such as Richard Strauss, and Pfitzner’s reputation, already a little threadbare, has never recovered. Revivals of Palestrina are still met with tut-tutting about his pro-Nazi sympathies.

Yet it is a great opera, and the view that it presages the dilemma faced by composers under the Nazis is a valid one. The composer Palestrina, the hero of the opera, refuses to kowtow to a cardinal who wants him to write a new piece to use in a doctrinal battle he is waging against the pope. Palestrina refuses, but then writes it anyway while in a dreamlike state, and is saved from execution. The metaphor can be read in several ways: there is nobility in refusing to bow to pressure, but also nobility in producing a piece that ultimately saves the polyphonic music the pope is trying to ban. What is incontestable is that the opera contains some inspired music – far too good to be kept hidden because Pfitzner later prostituted himself before the Nazis.

As the conductor Christian Thielemann told me when he conducted Palestrina at Covent Garden in 2001: “What has C sharp minor to do with fascism? Nothing. I am not interested in what composers have eaten or what their political beliefs were. Music doesn’t get better because one person was better than another person.”

Two final thoughts before we take our leave of Berlin. @ abkquan , without whose contributions these mini-essays would have been very feeble (thanks to him and all the other commenters for suggestions), reckons we should include David Bowie, who lived in the city in the late 1970s . The obvious discs to include are his Berlin trilogy – Low, “Heroes” and Lodger. But even more appropriate – and neatly circular – is Bowie’s version of Weill’s Alabama Song. Truly essence of Berlin.

He also thinks we should mention the performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony that Leonard Bernstein conducted in Berlin on Christmas Day 1989 to mark the tearing down of the wall between the eastern and western halves of the city. “That was a time of hope, of integration, of cultural and intellectual exchanges,” writes @ abkquan . “Sadly, a quarter of a century later, the west is again building walls metaphorically or, as Trump proposed, literally.”

Brexit and Trump! How blessed we are. But the wheel will turn again. It always does. The small-mindedness of Trump and the Brexiteers cannot for long compete with the largeness of spirit of a Bernstein. Or, indeed, a Beethoven.

How to Dive Into Berlin's Epic Musical History

T he capital of Germany has been celebrated for decades as a bastion of culture and creativity , with a daring, artistic spirit going hand in hand with a history of rebellion, revolution, and renewal. Artists flocked to Berlin even in the dark days before the Fall of the Wall, trying to tap into a growing sense of defiance within certain subsets of the community and a desire to go against the grain at any cost. The grimy basement bars of the ‘70s and ‘80s became favorite haunts of international and controversial greats like David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Nick Cave, along with politically charged German punk bands like Die Toten Hosen. Here, deep underground, beneath the shadow of the Wall, the modern-day soundtrack to a city was born.

Today, Berlin is known as a party city. It has one of the best clubbing scenes in the world and is home base for numerous creators of cutting-edge electronic music. But there’s much more to Berlin’s music scene than its justly famous temples of techno. These are some of the most unique and unmissable musical experiences the city has to offer.

For an all-around musical overview, take the Berlin Music Tour.

Berlin relies on its reputation as an arts hub to attract music lovers from around the globe. They come to experience a deep dive, both into Berlin’s world-shaking music history and its current wave of ground-breaking musical output. Thilo Schmied is a legendary connoisseur of Berlin’s rock music history and the perfect person to show them the ropes. Not just a proudly unapologetic superfan, Thilo worked in the industry during its headiest eras, when those mega-stars of 20th-century rock occupied the city’s clubs. A sound engineer turned passionate tour guide, Thilo has been running his Berlin Music Tours since 2005. Ask him about any artist during their inevitably debauched ‘Berlin period’ and he’ll have a story to share.

There are a variety of tours on offer depending on your interests. For example, his Berlin Bowie tours paint a vivid picture of Bowie’s time in the city during the recording of the “Berlin trilogy.” For an all-around sampler of Berlin’s most influential musical places and the personalities who gave them mythic status, the Bus Tour is a thoroughly entertaining 2.5-hour journey through Berlin’s colorful city streets .

Spiked by scandalous anecdotes, Thilo’s commentary thoroughly explains what made a pre-reunited Berlin such fertile ground for musicians as diverse as Nina Hagen, Siouxie Sioux, Depeche Mode, and U2. You’ll pass the unassuming flat in Shöneberg where Iggy and Bowie once co-resided before stopping in for a stiff drink at the pair’s favorite bar, Neues Ufer, where a portrait of Bowie still watches over patrons. While the tour is largely dedicated to Berlin’s rock ‘n’ roll origin story, Thilo takes care to acknowledge what came after. The fact that so many icons gravitated to Berlin in the ‘70s and ‘80s laid the groundwork for a scene that flourishes to this day.

The tour finishes with a daytime preview of some of the coolest nightspots in the city. Whether you need to know where the hottest DJs in the city are spinning or where to headbang to the heaviest of heavy German metal, Thilo will point you in the right direction.

Stop into Hansa Studios, the famous “studio by the Wall.” Photo: Hansa Studios /Facebook

Hansa Studios , once known as “the studio by the Wall,” is perhaps the most sacred site in Berlin for the hardcore music-history devotee. The current building opened in 1973 and is still a working recording studio. Standing in almost complete isolation in the midst of a war-flattened wasteland, it was a sort of last outpost of creative freedom overlooked by the world’s most notorious symbol of repression and authoritarian control. The view from the window of Studio 2 most poignantly served as the lyrical inspiration for “Heroes,” Bowie’s story of two unwillingly separated lovers, but Hansa has produced scores of acclaimed recordings over the decades from the likes of Brian Eno, U2, Nick Cave, Tangerine Dream, R.E.M., David Byrne, the Pixies, Rammstein, and countless others.

Because Hansa is a working studio and not a tourist destination, the only practical way to get inside is by pre-booking an excursion with Berlin Music Tours. Access is highly dependent on what’s going on in the studio on any given day, but for serious music fans, a visit to the hallowed halls of Hansa is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Hit the streets for some vinyl shopping.

If your most beloved souvenirs are of the vinyl variety, Berlin’s record stores will keep you busy for days. Space Hall in Kreuzberg is an overwhelming behemoth of a building. While many Berlin stores cater to specific genres, Space Hall stocks must-haves and rarities spanning the entire musical spectrum. You’ll find an entire section dedicated to soul, jazz, and funk; another to rock, punk, industrial, and new wave; and a backroom meticulously cataloging every conceivable electronic sub-genre. For hard-to-find techno, house, disco, and D&B, Hard Wax , another Kreuzberg institution, is a crate-digging DJs dream with a huge back catalog of everything from primitive dub reggae to old-school Chicago house.

Just south of Kreuzberg is Neukölln and Soultrade Records, where you’ll find an extensive collection of soul, R&B, hip-hop, funk, and jazz. Legendary DJ producers Hunee and Alex Barck of acid-jazz collective Jazzanova once worked the racks here, and today Soultrade is still a happy hunting ground for collectors of rare groove, world music, classic gospel, and neo-soul. Berlin’s punk rock spirit lives on at Friedrichshain’s Bis Aufs Messer . Despite its small size, BAM is surprisingly awesome for obscure pressings at bargain basement prices on metal, hardcore, garage punk, and indie rock.

Drink, dance, and party after dark.

musical tour berlin

If you’ve partied in Berlin , you already know that SO36 in Kreuzberg isn’t just a postcode but the city’s most famous live venue. Berlin’s answer to CBGB, the stage at SO36 has been graced (and disgraced) by the likes of Bowie, Iggy Pop, the Bad Seeds, the Dead Kennedys, and Die Toten Hosen. Today, SO36 still champions exciting new independent acts from across genres, remaining true to its pioneering punk past.

Berlin has no shortage of jazz clubs, but Zig Zag in Schöneberg is a local favorite. Serious jazz clubs can be intimidating, but the atmosphere here is decidedly intimate and inviting. A random visit might yield anything from a feel-good night of classic soul to an enrapturing instrumental performance from the jazz world’s latest genius-level darling.

Audiences of all musical persuasions will find themselves warmly welcomed at Junction Bar , a two-story venue consisting of an upstairs café and a basement club. The dance floor is generally packed with fans rocking out to everything from indie folk to jazz, rap, salsa, rockabilly, and the occasional evening of French chanson or cabaret.

Have a Berlin-style clubbing experience.

musical tour berlin

Photo: Salon – Zur wilden Renate /Facebook

It’s no coincidence that the collapse of the Berlin Wall in November 1991 coincided with the rise of Berlin’s world-famous clubbing culture. The heady mix of hope and hedonism in the years that followed was a catalyst for underground clubs to take root across the city. Today, Berlin’s club scene is far more mainstream, but a night of clubbing in Berlin until long after the sun comes up remains a thoroughly incomparable experience.

For years, Berghain remained unchallenged as the most iconic and exclusive nightclub in the world. But an oppressive door policy and years of tyrannical bouncers turning away punters on a whim helped Berghain fall out of favor in recent times. Nevertheless, the futuristic majesty of its massive industrial space (the site of a former power station), its mind-melting sound system, and the sheer intensity of its sex- and drug-fueled atmosphere still ensure it ranks among the world’s greatest clubs.

Amazingly, Berghain can’t lay claim to being the only Berlin mega-club housed in a converted power plant. With a brutalist exterior cutting a sinister spectacle even from afar, Tresor somehow manages to be even more terrifying. You’ll have to navigate a disorienting labyrinth of pitch-dark corridors, dead-end hallways, and tightly angled metal staircases. Follow the neon flashes and booming beats until you’re transported to a series of cavernous dance dungeons pumping out hard-style anthems, deep house, and progressive trance. If you’re still not completely delirious, make your way down to the tripped-out basement soundtracked by sonic swirls of moody ambient experimentalism.

Far more first-time friendly is Salon – Zur Wilden Renate . The place is a slightly disheveled multi-story apartment building transformed into a full-scale clubbing emporium with a slightly demented amusement park aesthetic. There are themed levels devoted to different electronic genres from the familiar to the outright bizarre. In summer, Renate hosts open-air parties in its courtyard — a great place to meet people over cheap drinks and tunes.

Berlin’s music scene beyond the bars

What makes Berlin different from other cities with strong musical cultures is that whether you’re a musician or just a fan, music is a lifestyle here. And some of the city’s best musical experiences aren’t confined to the bars, clubs, or festivals but out on the streets, free to anyone who might care to stop and listen.

A Music Lover's Guide to Berlin

Music is the pulse of Berlin

Music is the heartbeat of Germany’s capital city – from the hypnotic pulse of the techno beat, the jazzy strains reverberating though smokey clubs, renowned orchestras playing in highbrow concert halls and the street musicians uplifting the city with their song. If music is your mantra, here’s just some of the endless variety of music to sample in Berlin.

Take the bowie berlin walking tour.

Berlin’s modern musical transformation took hold in the late 60s and 70s with the punk and culture movements. While residing in the city, international musicians like Lou Reed and David Bowie brought its colourful and hedonistic sub-cultures to the world stage. Berlin Music Tours offers a well-priced opportunity to scratch beneath the surface of Bowie’s famous Trilogy Period and the music he made when he called Berlin home.

Sample the techno nightlife

After the fall of the Wall, the city left behind a host of abandoned buildings and a new form of electronic music culture emerged, where DJs became the stars of the late hours. Techno culture continues to permeate clubs like Berghain, which is known as the techno temple, with an entire subculture that has formed around it with catchphrases like ‘home is where Berghain is.’ Other popular techno clubs include Watergate, About Blank and many more .

If you’re not really a techno-head, never fear – there is something for every kind of lover in Berlin. Here’s a glimpse into the ‘Best Clubs In Berlin For People Who Don’t Like Electronic Music’ . Those who love that lush Latin salsa can also try out the ‘Best clubs for Latin Music in Berlin.’

World class music festivals

Berlin hosts big commercial festivals like Lollapalooza and Melt with the biggest bands and DJs among their line-ups. Berlin Atonal is a fantastic industrial futuristic festival that brings together the best avant-garde, ambient and experimental techno, analogue synths and electronic music, while the XJAZZ festival takes over Kreuzberg each May. There are also a plethora of weekend and sometimes week-long music festivals like Fusion which take place in and around the city. Whatever your fancy, Berlin celebrates its love for music and dancing all year round. Here’s more on some of the festivals that take place in and around Berlin.

ITB 2024: Visit the World of Berlin

  • visitBerlin presents Berlin at stand 305 in Hub27
  • UEFA EURO 2024 and the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall are Berlin's annual highlights
  • #TourismNeedsDiversity: Showing your face against racism and discrimination
  • Invitation to press events on 5 March

Berlin, 4 March 2024 It is the family reunion for tourism professionals: the International Tourism Exchange Berlin, or ITB Berlin for short. The world's leading travel trade fair will take place this year from 5 to 7 March at the Berlin Exhibition Grounds. The B2B format will focus on business, content and networking. visitBerlin will be represented at ITB Berlin 2024 as Berlin's destination management and marketing organisation. Together with TMB Tourismus-Marketing Brandenburg GmbH and Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), Berlin will be presenting itself in Hub27 at stand 305 under the umbrella of the Berlin Brandenburg Capital Region. At stand 311, visitBerlin and Brandenburg will be making a clear statement against racism and discrimination: the special area is themed "TourismNeedsDiversity".

Burkhard Kieker, CEO of visitBerlin: "ITB is like a campfire for the international travel and tourism industry: here in Berlin, the state marketing organisations, tour operators, tourism airlines and media are in the best of company. The power of personal encounters is the driving force behind our industry."

Berlin's annual highlights at Berlin stand 305: UEFA EURO 2024 and 35 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall For visitBerlin, everything at stand 305 in Hub27 this year revolves around these two major annual highlights: the UEFA EURO 2024 and the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The European Football Championship and the numerous events with which Berlin is celebrating 35 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall are once again attracting many guests to the capital this year. Almost 2.5 million fans are expected to attend the UEFA EURO 2024 from 14 June to 14 July. And autumn will mark the 35th anniversary of a very special day for Berlin and Germany: the city will commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989 in many places - a good occasion to go in search of traces in the city of freedom.

There will be activities for both major events - at the visitBerlin stand and on the exhibition grounds. For example, trade visitors can take photos with the UEFA Giant Trophy at the south entrance to the exhibition centre. Selfies can also be taken with the UEFA mascot Albärt at the Berlin stand on 5 March. 6 March marks a special countdown day: UEFA Euro 2024 starts in exactly 100 days, and there will be a quiz about UEFA and the host city Berlin on digital screen walkers on all days of the trade fair.

TourismNeedsDiversity

Special stand (311) of Tourismus Marketing Brandenburg and visitBerlin: #TourismNeedsDiversity  Tourism needs diversity: this is the motto of an initiative by visitBerlin and TMB Tourimus-Marketing Brandenburg at stand 311 in Hub27. visitBerlin invites all trade fair participants to make cosmopolitanism, tolerance and diversity visible on the 30 square metre area. The central elements will be three benches with one half of the seat missing. They will be labelled "No place for racism" or "No place for racism". The hashtags #tourismneedsdiversity and #ITBtogether appear in large letters on the photo wall behind them. Visitors can take a seat on the benches, take photos with a Polaroid camera and immortalise themselves on the photo wall. With this campaign, Berlin's tourism organisation is taking a clear stand against racism and discrimination - and strengthening its commitment to fundamental democratic values.

How to organise a sustainable trade fair appearance Thinking events and sustainability together: visitBerlin is doing everything it can to ensure that the capital's visitor economy is fit for the future. At ITB 2024, Berlin's marketing organisation will show how this can be done. Together with TMB Tourismus-Marketing Brandenburg GmbH and BER Airport, it is implementing targeted measures around the trade fair appearance. These include cooperation with a sustainability-certified catering partner, a scanning app that makes business cards superfluous and rental furniture. The Sustainable Event Guidelines from visitBerlin form the basis for this. These help organisers to plan and implement their events sustainably. With success: in the international ranking of the Global Destination Sustainability Index, Berlin ranked sixth among the world's most sustainable metropolises in 2023. Tips for a sustainable visit to Berlin can be found on the visitBerlin website.
