lewa safari camp tour guide

Guiding & Activities

Lewa safari camp guides.

The Lewa Safari Camp guides are based in camp within Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, and are some of the best guides in the country. Most are from neighbouring communities and have been guiding within the Conservancy for many years, some for over 15 years, they know the botany of the area, palaeontology history of the Lewa, as well as an intimate knowledge of the rhinos, cheetah and lion families. The guides are Bronze or Silver level Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association certified, and they also receive training directly from the Conservancy to the “Lewa Standard”.  The walking guides are trained armed rangers from the Conservancy.

Game Drives

The Lewa Safari Camp guides are based in camp within Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Most are from the neighbouring communities and have been guiding within the Conservancy for many years, some for over 15 years. All the guides are first class, with Bronze or Silver level Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association certification, and they also receive training directly from the Conservancy to the “Lewa Standard”.

Lewa Safari Camp has open gamedrive vehicles. The current fleet are specially fitted, 4×4 Toyota Landcruisers. The vehicles are unrivalled with feature enhancements specifically designed for comfort and photography – open sided with 3 rows of seats, photographic equipment stands, and charging sockets. Clients will share gamedrives unless “exclusive use of vehicle” has been prebooked at an extra charge.

With the whole of the eastern half of the Conservancy to itself, and with strict limits on tourism numbers with the Conservancy, guests can enjoy an almost private gameviewing experience. Although a vast area, the Conservancy is fenced, (fencing of wildlife areas is very unusual in Kenya), specifically to protect the rhino. The gamedriving is outstanding with plentiful, rhino, elephant, buffalo, the rare Grevy Zebra and resident predators, to a backdrop of beautiful views of snow capped Mt. Kenya.

Guided Walks

Lewa Safari Camp’s walking guides are trained wildlife rangers from the Conservancy. Apart from their knowledge on rhino conservation, they are also knowledgeable about the tracks, botany; and most walks leave from camp.

Take the time to leave the car behind and enjoy the small things – tracks, dung beetles, micro-ecosystems.

Ngare Ndare Forest

Another walking option is to visit Ngare Ndare forest conservancy. This is a community conservancy to the south of Lewa. There is a canopy walk, and river to play in. There are usually elephants in the forest, so you will be escorted by the Lewa walking guide. This is a full day out from camp with a picnic, and there is an extra cost only to cover the separate conservation fee.

Swimming Pool

Enjoy the cool waters in the heat of the day!

Within the lush green gardens, the giraffe design pool has bar service and board games as well as table tennis.

There are sunbeds and a shaded lounge area, perfect for reading and relaxing during the day.

Bush Breakfast and Sundowners

Take a moment to sit back, enjoy the spectacular views, the smells, the colours, and the gentle breeze.

Bush breakfasts are a chance to enjoy a full breakfast, al fresco, in the middle of the plains, surrounded by wildlife.

“Sundowners” are a safari tradition – after a day of safari; stop, watch the spectacular sunset; traditionally with a gin and tonic in hand!

Safari is also a holiday and a rest – a break from today’s frenetic lifestyle.

Lewa Safari Camp offers:

  • Massages – a wonderful way to ease the stress out of tired shoulders and backs.

Horse or Camel Riding

Lewa Safari Camp offers evening horse rides – you can get very close to plains game as they see you as one of their own! Horse riding is for experienced riders only, as although it is a gentle walk on very well behaved horses, you are in the wild, and need to be able to bring a situation under control when horses are spooked. Horse riding is subject to availability and there is an additional charge. Riders will be requested to fill out a questionnaire to ascertain their competency.

Lewa Safari Camp also offers evening camel rides – less elegant than horseriding, but suitable for those without riding skills, the camels are led by Samburu handlers and it is picturesque experience. Camel riding is subject to availability and there is an additional charge. There are only three riding camels available.

Cultural and Conservancy Visits

Cultural village visits.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy borders the Samburu community conservancies of Tassia and Il Ngwesi in the arid lowlands of the north, and many of the staff at Lewa Safari Camp come from this area. Lewa Safari Camp offers visits to neighbouring local Samburu homesteads. The Samburu live in semi-permanent huts known as Manyattas and it is the role of the wife to construct the hut from cattle dung and grass. The families will show you round their home for a fee (payable separately, ask reception for details), and will want to take the opportunity to sell their traditional handicrafts – bargain hard!

Conservancy visits

as part of our get involved program, guests who are making donations to the Lewa Education Program, can visit schools during term time. For a small donation, guests can also visit and/or participate in Conservation work, eg training of tracker dogs, have a tour of the Conservancy offices.

Weddings & Honeymoons

There is nothing more romantic than a safari! Already an unforgettable, once in a lifetime and pampered experience; safaris offer incredible sunsets, romantic tents with spectacular views, and relaxed al fresco dinners. The beautiful setting at Lewa Safari Camp is ideal for that very special romantic holiday.

Being a very special holiday, we often have special offers and upgrades for honeymooners.

Over the years, we have hosted many beautiful weddings, blessings, and renewal of vows for our guests.

From small simple ceremonies involving merely a glass of champagne at the end of a gamedrive; to elaborate three day events, with over 30 guests taking over the whole property. Options include legal marriages conducted by the local commissioner or religious minister, or Blessing by the chief of the local tribal community.

Luxury Laikipia Safaris in Kenya Laikipia Safaris

  • Lewa Safari Camp

Location: Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Laikipia, Northern Kenya No of rooms: 12 tents Style: Luxury tented rooms Highlights: Rhino viewing and conservation Dining: Under the stars or in the dining area

Lewa Safari Camp has a stunning location within Lewa wildlife / rhino conservancy with views to Mount Kenya. Each of Lewa Safari Camp’s en-suite tented rooms has a thatched roof with a verandah. The central areas combine a pool, gardens and dining rooms, and cosy log-fires make the sometimes chilly evenings comfortable and intimate.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is 65,000 acres of wildlife conservation area, and is home to 10% of Kenya’s rhino population – the pioneering work here with this endangered species is easy to see, as well as their huge population of the endangered Grevy’s zebra. All profits from Lewa are reinvested into Lewa’s core conservation projects, of which there are many.

Activities include game drives, bush walks, swimming, bush breakfasts, sundowners, horse riding, archeological site visits, educational talks on history and day to day operating of the conservancy, and a lovely gift shop.

Lewa was founded in 1995 and is a not for profit organization, which through the management of endangered species, community conservation and education programmes, as well as much more, still succeeds in being a leader in the preservation of Kenya’s wildlife and people.

EXPLORE LEWA

The advantage of being located in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is that guests are surrounded by rich game viewing opportunities without the crowds. A maximum of just 3 vehicles are allowed at a wildlife sighting, ensuring an exclusive game viewing experience. There is a very good chance of seeing all of the “Big Five” and Lewa is one of the only conservancies where guests are almost guaranteed to see the endangered black and white rhinos while on safari. With the backdrop of snow-capped Mount Kenya and the diversity of scenery from open plains, rolling hills, valleys, escarpments and rivers, Lewa is a magical place to game drive for the ultimate Kenyan safari experience. And with our new electric game drive vehicles, we’re leading the charge in wildlife and environment-friendly game viewing.

ADVENTURE IN COMFORT.

Safari_LewaFeb2022TCunniffe_014

Alternatively, head on over to our camel guides and once you’ve experienced the swaying movement of the camel standing up from the ground where you’ve mounted, you’ll be led on an ambling walk through the Lewa plains. The soft lulling motion of the impeccably cared for camels fits in perfectly with the quiet and gentle landscape.

RideLewa_Feb2022_TCunniffe_126

An opportunity you won’t want to miss – to fly the wilds of Kenya with Air Wilderness. Take off from the lodge and fly to the snowcapped peaks of Mount Kenya, or fly along the tree tops as you try and spot elephants along the Ewaso N’gero river. For the true ‘Out of Africa’ experience opt for our open cockpit biplane, and weave through gorges which show off the beauty of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Our scenic flights are the best way to discover so much more from the sky.

Waco flights are currently unavailable (they’ll be back soon!) but our charter flights are open and operating.

AirWilderness_Lewa_TeaganCunniffe_077

As a family home, Lewa Wilderness is very family friendly and we welcome kids of all ages. We are favoured amongst families, small and large, and multi-generational. From pony rides, camel rides, Maasai games, exploring for cave paintings to crab fishing in the fresh water springs. There is a huge array of activities for kids of all ages – to enjoy with their families or on their own under guide supervision, while older kids and adults head out on different activities. We are exactly what a family safari should be. Lewa Wilderness additionally has a few select off-site activities that single-travelers and families alike will love. The nearby Ngare Ndare Forest and Waterfalls offers an ecosystem very different to Lewa to explore, with a treetop canopy walk and spectacular waterfalls where you can swim and enjoy a picnic lunch. Il Ngwesi Maasai Village is an authentic Maasai village where guests can spend the day enjoying a unique experience interacting with amazing people, ideal for those wanting to explore local traditional culture. And finally there’s Rehema Destitute Home which deals with neglected and orphaned children where you can visit and meet the kids. This is well supported by our guests at Lewa Wilderness.

Places For Pleasant Recreation in Moscow Region

lewa safari camp tour guide

We suggest you a review of sanatoriums, hotels, lodges and guesthouses around the capital. Moscow region has a big variety of places for rest and these are the most noteworthy of them.

YAKOR GUESTHOUSE

Almost like an American motel, but situated at the Oka River

Yakor

There are: equipment for winter sports, a massage salon, a beauty shop, a bath-sauna with a sweating room and a font, billiards, karaoke. Things to do: go to Tarusa, visit the House-Museum of Tsvetaeva’s family, the Musatovsky slope, memorable places connected with Paustovsky.

Yakor is arranged by principles of an American motel. Rooms are clean; there is a shower, TV, towels, and heat if it is necessary. In some rooms, you will also find a refrigerator. Almost full size wooden fishes act as key charms. In warm season, you can buy cheap fruits, vegetables and flowers in a nearby shop.

If you want to have some cultural adventures, you can go to Tarusa or visit a place where Marina Tsvetaeva wanted to be buried. In addition, there opens a wonderful view over Oka River with its fogs and plains.

Tarusa, Decembrists Street, 4 +7 48435 2 55 81 tarusa-yakor.ru

The price of a double room starts from 1250 rubles (€12.55).

NIKOLA-LENIVETS

«Beaubourg», «Lighthouse» and other land-art objects in the park: romanticism in a spirit of «The True Detective»

Nikola Lenivets

There are: a kitchen-dining room with three meals a day, sledges, ice-boats, skis and snow-scooters, a Russian bath, hootch and other gifts of local farmers. Things to do: walk around art objects.

It is ok to go to Nicola-Lenivets in any tome of the year. In winter, art objects look differently, than in summer. Houses in Koltsovo are very warm; you will find valenoki in each of them- to change your footwear in case of a bad weather. Directly near the porch of the house, guests can take sledges and iceboats and go riding to «Lighthouse». It is possible to order skis. The bathhouse costs 1500 rubles (€15.06) per hour.

Kaluga region, Kiyevskoye Highway, Nikola-Lenivets +7 499 504 43 33 www .nikola-lenivets.com

Prices start from 1300 rubles (€13.05) for a place in hostel; double rooms in Koltsovo cost about 1600 rubles (€16.06).

A health resort, turned from the XIX century estate into the President’s Office Health Resort with unexpectedly democratic prices

snegiri

There are: a Russian bath and a modern Spa center with pearl bathtubs and other delicacies, medical services with a decent choice of experts and procedures, massage, a pool, a fitness club, a sports hall, a skating rink, a music hall where classic musicians perform from time to time. Things to do: go to the New Jerusalem Monastery, the Museum of Wooden Architecture or find a park grotto in Rozhdestveno that looks exactly like a hobbit dwelling.

The place has gone through some repairs recently and became very modern. It has fine communications, billiards, a big beautiful dining room, summer outdoor café and a beautiful view of local architecture. It is possible to order lunches previously in a day in the dining room. However, service is a little Soviet. To diversify food, you can go to one of four restaurants at the territory. Besides, it is possible to prepare a barbecue on coals. For entertainment, you can ride a bicycle through the paths or go to a swimming pool – an outdoor one during summer or indoor during cold season. The most important winter entertainments are tubing (there is a hill with an elevator), skis and skating. Pleasantly, that Snegiri’s territory is huge, so the place does not look crowded even in high season.

The new cottage territory at the old rest house — it is ideal for team buildings, but will also be good for a romantic weekend

There are: a Spa center, a wellness-center, a skating rink, a pool, table tennis, a sensor room, a gym. Things to do: examine squirrels in the wood, participate in cultural actions and master classes on decoupage or barbecue; there are also special programs on holidays.

Rooms here are usual, with an easy Soviet fleur. The main surprise is food – a buffet with a great variety of Russian dishes: Russian salad, coulibiac, ‘Herring under a Fur Coat’. There is a nice pool and a good choice of different cosmetic procedures. The territory is really big, beautiful and worth having long walks – there is a wood and a lake.

Moscow region, Naro Fominsk +7 495 992 04 37 www.bekasovo.ru

The price of a double room starts from 2400 rubles (€24.10).

VERETYEVO ART ESTATE

veretyevo

There are: breakfasts at a fireplace with Lenin’s portrait in the only survived building of a former camp; rabbits, squirrels and rams at the territory; a Russian bath with a glass verandah hanging over the Dubna River. It is possible to admire the river from the bridge, and it is possible to roll down into it from the verandah by a trench, which leads directly to the river (obviously not in winter). Things to do: go to the science city Dubna, look at the Lenin’s second-large monument in the world and a hydroelectric station reservoir.

Here you can enjoy races on snowmobiles, a sit-round gathering at a fireplace, pajama parties, dances — and music. There is wonderful nature with dogs barking and mosquitoes flying in the garden near the house. The purest air can be literally eaten with spoons. Veretyevo is made with taste rural cluster that has ideology and style.

Taldomsky district, Veretyevo village +7 916 956 28 82 www.artveretevo.ru

The price starts from 2500 rubles (€25.10) for a room; Russian bath costs 10 000 rubles (€100.40) for a company.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
