How Do Travel Rewards Credit Cards Work?

If you’re a frequent flyer, vacationer, or just want to find good deals, a travel rewards credit card can help you earn great benefits and rewards.

What is a Travel Rewards Credit Card?

Travel rewards credit cards are a kind of credit card that offers you points or miles in exchange for spending. These points or miles can then be redeemed for travel-related items.

Occasionally, these cards can come with travel-related perks, such as free checked bags, priority boarding, and other deals and discounts.

What are the Different Types of Travel Rewards Credit Cards?

There are many different types of travel rewards credit cards, but some of the most popular include:

Airline Credit Cards

Airline credit cards are co-branded with a specific airline and typically allow cardholders to earn points or miles that can be redeemed for flights with participating airlines and possibly other travel-related items like car rentals and hotels. These cards also often come with several travel-related perks.

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® , for example, offers benefits such as the first checked bag free and preferred boarding.

Business Travel Rewards Credit Cards

Business travel rewards cards are designed for both business owners and employees and offer points or miles that can be redeemed for travel-related items. The CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® is both an airline and business travel rewards credit card. With this card, you can earn 2 miles for every $1 spent on eligible American Airlines purchases and at telecommunications merchants, cable and satellite providers, car rental merchants and gas stations. The card also offers flight perks, including first checked bag free and preferred boarding.

How do Travel Rewards Credit Card Points and Miles Work?

Travel rewards credit cards typically offer points or miles for making purchases with the card. Some of these cards offer additional points or miles on specific purchase categories like, for example, restaurants or gas stations. These points or miles can then be redeemed for travel expenses, such as airfare, hotels, rental cars, and more.

How to Redeem Points or Miles

A common way to redeem points or miles is through your credit card issuer’s or its partner’s portal.

For Citi credit cards that earn ThankYou® Points, you can go to www.thankyou.com to redeem your points. Once there, you can learn how to redeem your points.

Citi cards that participate in the American Airlines AAdvantage program let you redeem your miles at the AAdvantage miles portal.

Some rewards programs also allow you to redeem your points or miles for gift cards or merchandise.

What are Some of The Benefits of Travel Rewards Credit Cards?

There are different benefits depending on the travel rewards credit card. Here are examples of some benefits for a few travel rewards credit cards.

Hotel Room Discounts

With the Citi Premier® Card, you can enjoy $100 off a single hotel stay of $500 or more, excluding taxes and fees, through thankyou.com, once per calendar year.

An Enhanced Airport Experience

With the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® you can enjoy Admirals Club ®  Membership, including access to nearly 100 Admirals Club ® and partner lounge locations worldwide. This benefit can help you relax before your flight and enjoy complimentary food and drinks. You’ll also receive priority check-in and priority screening (when available), as well as priority boarding for you and up to eight travelers on the same reservation.

Discounted In-Flight Drinks, Snacks, and Meals

The CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard is a business travel rewards credit card that offers 25% savings on inflight food and beverage purchases when you use your card on American Airlines flights. This benefit can help you save money on your vacation expenses.

Earn 60,000 bonus points on the Citi Premier Card: Worth over $1,000

Chris Dong

Editor's Note

Citi is a TPG advertising partner.

If you're looking to boost your summer travel with a nice haul of transferable points, you might want to think about one of Citi's most viable cards on the market.

The Citi Premier® Card (see rates and fees ) is offering 60,000 ThankYou points after you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. According to TPG valuations that peg ThankYou points at 1.8 cents apiece, that's a bonus worth $1,080.

In the past, Citi has offered up to 80,000 ThankYou bonus points — and while that's a pretty solid deal, 60,000 ThankYou points also offer tons of value. Let's dive deeper into Citi's Premier Card to see what other perks it offers.

citi card travel points

Aside from the potential points haul the sign-up bonus offers, the Citi Premier is one of the best earners among rewards credit cards thanks to its various bonus categories. They include:

  • 3 ThankYou points per dollar at restaurants
  • 3 ThankYou points per dollar at supermarkets
  • 3 ThankYou points per dollar at gas stations
  • 3 ThankYou points per dollar on air travel and hotels

Currently, Citi is offering 10 points per dollar on airfare, hotel and car rental bookings when booked through the Citi Travel portal on ThankYou.com through June 30, 2024. You'll also receive 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

What can you do with Citi ThankYou points?

What's particularly valuable about ThankYou points is the ability to utilize the issuer's airline and hotel transfer partners .

After you meet the initial spending requirement of $4,000 in the first three months, you'll have at least 60,000 ThankYou points — and even more, if you've spent in the bonus categories listed above — that you can use to book travel that includes flights and hotels.

citi card travel points

If you value simplicity, the 60,000-point sign-up bonus will let you book $600 of paid travel directly through the Citi ThankYou travel portal . You'll earn miles and elite status on these flights by redeeming points this way, and you don't have to worry about award availability. You could also redeem your points for $600 in gift cards.

TPG credit card writer Danyal Ahmed is a huge fan of the Citi Premier and utilizes his points exclusively by transferring them to some of Citi's transfer partners.

He finds value in programs such as Air France-KLM Flying Blue , thanks to their standardized award chart between the U.S. and Europe, which offers business-class tickets for 50,000 points one-way while having the ability to add a free stopover.

Before its devaluation , Danyal often transferred his Citi ThankYou points to Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles to secure business-class seats for as little as 47,000 miles one-way to the Middle East. However, another phenomenal use of Citi points is to transfer them to Qatar Airways Privilege Club to book the renowned QSuite business-class product.

  • $100 annual hotel credit (on single hotel stay bookings of $500 or more, excluding taxes and fees, booked through thankyou.com)
  • Free FICO credit score monitoring
  • Citi Quick Lock so you can block new purchases without interrupting recurring ones

Bottom line

Between the sign-up bonus, earning 3 points per dollar on a wide range of popular bonus categories, and valuable transfer partners, the Citi Premier Card is a great travel rewards credit card.

You can easily rack up ThankYou points through everyday spending on gas, groceries and dining purchases without a cap on how many points you can earn.

Who can use the Citi ThankYou travel portal?

The baseline value of citi thankyou points, how to book travel in the citi thankyou rewards travel portal, benefits of booking in the citi thankyou travel portal, what else you need to know about citi travel portal, how good is the citi travel portal.

Citi has rolled out big changes to its online travel portal that will have a sizable impact on how its credit cardholders search and book travel — whether they’re paying for a trip or redeeming points.

In March 2023, Citi launched its revamped booking platform, officially called Citi Travel with Booking.com. Certain cardholders can book everything from flights and hotels to rental cars and experiences through the portal.

The booking website now offers some 1.4 million hotel options worldwide, including a growing list of properties in Citi’s two new hotel portfolios: the Hotel Collection and Luxury Collection. Bookings in these collections come with special perks such as property credit, free breakfast and more.

The changes give members more options to use Citi ThankYou points. In addition to redeeming ThankYou points for travel, members can also redeem points for cash back or transfer them to airline or hotel partners. In fact, members sometimes extract a higher value from their points by transferring them.

However, applying them toward travel in the Citi’s online travel portal can be a compelling option, particularly given some of the perks available at the platform’s two hotel collections and the current promotion: Now through June 30, 2024, cardmembers with the Citi Prestige® Card or Citi Premier® Card can earn a total of 10x ThankYou Points by booking their hotels, rental cars or eligible attractions on Citi Travel. The Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card and Citi Rewards+® Card can earn a total of 5x ThankYou Points on the same bookings.

In this guide, we’ll go over which cards that members can use the Citi ThankYou travel portal, what the points are worth and when redeeming points through the Citi Travel portal can make sense.

Most cards that earn Citi ThankYou Points offer members access to the Citi Travel portal, including:

AT&T Access Card from Citi (not open to new applications).

AT&T Access More Card from Citi (not open to new applications).

Citi Custom Cash® Card .

Citi Premier® Card .

Citi Prestige® Card (not open to new applications).

Citi Rewards+® Card .

Citi Double Cash® Card .

The portal offers cardholders perks like same-day booking opportunities, a 24-hour cancellation window for full refunds and flexible payment options.

Cardholders can redeem Citi ThankYou points between 1 cent to 1.25 cents through the Citi Travel portal or when redeemed for cash back. So, 1 cent per point should be your baseline redemption rate when deciding whether you should transfer points to one of Citi's airline or hotel partners .

If the booking you are considering gives you less than a 1-cent-per-point redemption rate, consider getting cash back instead. Then, pay for that same booking in cash. This may be more optimal than redeeming your ThankYou points at a lower rate.

1. Log into your Citi account

One of the benefits of Citi’s new travel portal is that you can book a trip and manage your credit card account with just a single login. Eligible ThankYou members can access the new travel portal directly .

You can redeem Citi ThankYou Points at a rate of 1 cent to 1.25 cents toward the following travel purchases: flights, hotel rooms, car rentals and activities. The Citi Travel portal is powered by Booking.com and Rocket Travel by Agoda, and works like the online travel agencies you’ve likely used before.

2. Search your travel dates and destinations

Let’s say you want to book a flight. Select the “Flights” tab and begin your search. Select your trip type (round trip, one way or multicity), and enter the number of passengers and preferred class of service. Input your departure and destination cities and travel dates. Check the nonstop box if necessary and select “Search.”

citi card travel points

Review your flight options on the following page. To further filter the search results, you can sort by price, travel duration, as well as departure and arrival time. You can also filter results by the number of stops and operating airlines.

3. Choose to pay with cash, points or a combination of both

Once you select the fare, you’ll have the option to select a payment method: using ThankYou Points or a Citi credit card. If you choose to redeem points, you can either pay in full or redeem for a partial payment.

Here’s an example of a flight booking through the portal: a flight from Salt Lake City to Denver aboard Delta Air Lines. You can see, it’s available for $113.90 or 11,390 ThankYou points — a 1 cent-per-point rate.

citi card travel points

You can also type in the number of points you want to apply toward the cost of the flight, select “Apply” and pay attention to the payment summary. If the points cover only part of the fare, use your credit card to pay the remaining amount. Then, enter passenger information and complete your booking.

Follow the same process online to make reservations for hotel rooms, car rentals and activities.

Historically, transferring ThankYou points to one of Citi’s partners, like airlines or hotel loyalty programs, sometimes results in a higher value for your rewards (in that they are likely to be worth more than 1 cent apiece). In a recent NerdWallet analysis , we value Citi ThankYou points between 1 cent to 1.3 cents per point. However, there are a few reasons you might consider booking travel through the ThankYou Travel portal instead.

Book flights on the dates you want

Let’s get real for a moment: Award travel is great when everything goes according to plan. But what if you want to travel on specific dates and can’t find available seats using miles with a specific airline? In that case, you have to be flexible and pick less convenient travel dates or times.

You can reserve any open seat on a plane by booking your flight through the Citi ThankYou Rewards travel portal because there are no blackout dates.

You might use slightly more points at a fixed redemption rate of 1 cent to 1.25 cents per point, but at least you can fly on your preferred dates. This option works best with inexpensive economy flights.

Book non-chain hotels with points

When you participate in hotel loyalty programs , you end up staying at chains. But what if you want to book that bewitching beachfront bed-and-breakfast and still take advantage of credit card rewards? Well, the good news is if it shows up in the portal search results, you can redeem points to reserve it.

In the Citi Travel portal, hotel reward bookings aren’t limited to chain hotels, which means you can book all kinds of properties outside of popular brands. This benefit is all the more noteworthy now that Citi has bolstered its property offerings through its Booking.com partnership.

Keep money in your pocket

If you’ve amassed a large collection of Citi ThankYou points, you might have more points than you know what to do with. And now that you’re ready to book a trip, you want to make use of your points instead of spending cash — essentially avoiding paying out of pocket for the same expense.

Though you’ll get a redemption rate of 1 cent to 1.25 cents per point, your trip will be paid for entirely with points. This can be a smart money move for the right situation.

Citi Hotel Collection and Luxury Collection

Perhaps the most significant change unveiled as part of the revamped Citi Travel with Booking.com portal is the addition of two hotel portfolios, at which eligible cardholders can enjoy added perks, not to mention, savings in some cases.

Citi is in the process of rolling out its new Hotel Collection and Luxury Collection — both bookable through its new platform. This may sound like a familiar concept. It’s similar to what other major credit card companies have offered through their travel portals, such as American Express Travel’s Hotel Collection and Fine Hotels and Resorts.

Citi’s Hotel Collection is available to all eligible ThankYou credit cardmembers. Guests who book one of these properties will enjoy a host of perks, including free breakfast for two, complimentary Wi-Fi and early check-in and late checkout (when available).

Here’s one property in San Francisco — the Argonaut Hotel, not far from Fisherman’s Wharf — available as part of the Hotel Collection. As you can see, the listing explicitly mentions late checkout and free premium Wi-Fi as a perk for this booking.

citi card travel points

Meanwhile, the higher-end Luxury Collection portfolio is available only for ThankYou members who carry the Citi Prestige® Card or Citi Premier® Card . On top of the same perks offered as part of the Hotel Collection, eligible members who book one of these properties will also enjoy room upgrades (when available) and a $100 experience credit, which can be used for on-property purchases ranging from food and beverages to spa treatments, depending on the hotel.

Citi’s initial rollout of the Hotel Collection and Luxury Collection is confined to the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean, but the company plans to expand the two portfolios to new destinations around the world over the next year.

Complimentary fourth night on certain hotel bookings

Both the Citi Prestige® Card and Citi Premier® Card offer a fourth night free on eligible bookings, twice per year. One of the best ways to maximize use of Citi’s travel portal is to combine this card benefit with the perks offered as part of the Hotel and Luxury Collections.

To use this benefit, filter your hotel search results in the portal to display hotels designated as “Complimentary 4th Night Eligible.” Book at least four nights and look closely at checkout to confirm that the system applied the savings.

Bonus points for bookings

Extra points are certainly a way to sweeten any deal when it comes to booking, and Citi is offering a hefty promotion in concert with the new portal.

Between now and June 30, 2024, the Citi Prestige® Card and Citi Premier® Card members can earn a total of 10 points per dollar when booking hotels, rental cars or eligible attractions through Citi Travel.

Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card and Citi Rewards+® Card members can earn a total of 5 points per dollar on those bookings.

Earn airline miles

Similar to other credit card travel portals like American Express or Chase, Citi members earn airline miles even when booking through the portal. Just add your airline frequent flyer number to the reservation.

On the other hand, a notable downside of Citi’s new portal is that, at least for now, members cannot add their hotel loyalty numbers. So, for instance, if you book a stay at a Hilton property through Citi Travel, you would earn ThankYou points for the purchase, but not Hilton Honors points for the stay.

The Citi Travel with Booking.com portal includes 24/7 customer service, which can assist with reservation and rebooking needs.

Members with existing travel booked through the old ThankYou Travel Center (prior to March 19, 2023) can access their reservation at ThankYou.com. Select “Travel” and then “My trips."

Despite improvements as part of the revamped Citi Travel portal, it likely won’t appeal to points and miles enthusiasts whose main objective is to maximize value.

However, for others who simply want to use their ThankYou points, it offers plenty of options. And there are certain situations where booking through Citi Travel can be even more beneficial than transferring points, particularly as the company continues to expand the Hotel Collection and Luxury Collection.

The opportunity for certain cardmembers to earn up to 5 or 10 points per dollar on purchases through the portal doesn’t hurt, either. Plus, using the portal can help you travel on dates with limited award availability and expand your lodging selection.

Although the value of your rewards won’t always reach its ceiling, you’ll keep money in your pocket by using ThankYou points for travel.

The information related to the AT&T Access More Card from Citi and Citi Prestige® Card has been collected by NerdWallet and has not been reviewed or provided by the issuer or provider of this product or service.

Citi is a Blueprint partner.

As a full-time travel and credit card rewards writer, it’s safe to say I have a few cards in my wallet. However, I’ve realized that one card in my wallet has been overlooked: my Citi Premier® Card * The information for the Citi Premier® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. .

I first opened the Citi Premier card in 2020 and used it regularly. It offers solid earning potential of 3 ThankYou® points per $1 at restaurants, supermarkets, gas stations, air travel and hotels and 1 point per $1 on all other purchases. Plus, through June 30, 2024, earn 10 ThankYou points per $1 spent on hotels, car rentals and attractions booked on the Citi Travel portal. The card also allows you to transfer points to 14 airline partners and four hotel partners. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the card, but I simply stopped using it while working toward welcome offers for new cards and then forgot about it altogether.

Currently, the card I use the most is the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card * The information for the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. , which allows me to earn 2 miles per $1 on purchases, 5 miles per $1 on flights booked through Capital One Travel and on purchases through Capital One Entertainment and 10 miles per $1 on hotels and rental cars booked via Capital One Travel. I also have the co-branded Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Card and the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , both of which get regular use.

Looking at my annual account summary, the only purchase on my Citi Premier card in 2023 was the $95 annual fee. This means I’m leaving points on the table, as some of my spending, like purchases at restaurants, supermarkets and gas stations, that earned rewards on my Venture X could have earned more rewards with my Citi Premier. Here’s why I’m going to reach for my Citi Premier more at checkout this year.

Earning ThankYou® Points

While other issuers, like American Express , often limit bonus points at supermarkets to those in the U.S., Citi includes purchases from eligible supermarkets worldwide. Since I spend most of the year outside of the U.S., this distinction is crucial for me.

Additionally, the Citi Premier Card is the only card I have in my wallet that offers 3 points per $1 at gas stations. I love to rent cars to explore new destinations and typically use my Venture X to fill up the tank before returning the rental. However, just like with supermarkets, I’d be much better off using my Citi Premier to earn an additional point per dollar when I do this.

Redeeming ThankYou Points

Once you’ve accumulated some ThankYou® Points using your card, you can redeem them in several different ways. You can book travel through the Citi Travel Portal , which includes flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises and attractions. Booking travel this way typically gives you a value of around one cent per point. This is standard among credit cards, but you can often do better by transferring your points to one of the available transfer partners .

Airline transfer partners:

  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
  • Avianca Lifemiles
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Emirates Skywards
  • Etihad Guest
  • Air France Flying Blue
  • JetBlue True Blue
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer
  • Qatar Privilege Club
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Thai Royal Orchid Plus
  • Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles

All airline partners have a 1:1 transfer ratio for Citi Premier cardholders. Through March 16, 2024 you can transfer points to Virgin Atlantic at a higher ratio — 1,000 ThankYou Points to 1,300 Virgin Points. I spend about eight months out of the year in South America, where Avianca is one of the main carriers. Earning ThankYou Points could help me redeem for flights throughout the continent to help offset some of the cost of travel.

The hotel transfer partners have a different transfer ratio than the airlines, with some opportunities better than others.

Hotel transfer partners:

  • ALL – Accor Live Limitless (2:1)
  • Choice Privileges (1:2)
  • Leaders Club (5:1)
  • Wyndham Rewards (1:1)

Unfortunately, if you’re loyal to Marriott or Hyatt, you won’t be able to transfer your ThankYou Points to get maximum value and are likely better off sticking to airline transfer partners. However, this can be a great benefit if you don’t have a co-branded hotel card that you love and enjoy staying at Wyndham or Choice properties.

Considering a hotel credit card? See our expert picks to help you choose the best hotel card for your travel style.

Other redemption methods include using your points during online checkout at Best Buy and Amazon or purchasing gift cards. Both of these redemption methods will provide less value for your points than if you used them for travel, so it’s generally not recommended.

How I plan to utilize my card this year

I don’t want to continue making the same mistakes as I did in the past, so I am going to make sure I use the card that offers me the most points per dollar on each purchase I make. This means always using the Citi Premier Card for purchases at supermarkets and gas stations.

Both my Chase Sapphire Preferred and Citi Premier Card earn 3 points per $1 spent at restaurants, so I will likely use my Citi card when I’m out to eat to build up my ThankYou Points stash. Between now and the end of June, I’ll use the Citi Travel Portal to book my travel so I can take advantage of the limited-time bonus points on hotels, attractions and rental cars that rival the earnings on my Capital One Venture X. This will help me accumulate a decent number of points in a short time.

I likely won’t take advantage of the bonus points on car rentals, as I prefer to use my Capital One Venture X card on that spending as it offers primary rental car coverage¹. Additionally, when I pay for flights and other everyday purchases, I’ll use the cards that earn the most in those categories. Both my Sapphire Preferred and Venture X offer higher earning potential than the Citi Premier.

One of the most notable benefits of the Citi Premier Card that I haven’t used yet is the $100 annual hotel savings credit on a single hotel stay of $500 or more (excluding taxes and fees) booked through thankyou.com once per calendar year. I plan to take several weekend trips while living in Europe this summer, so this credit should be easy enough for me to use and help provide savings during peak travel season. This benefit alone is enough to offset the card’s annual fee.

Bottom line

The world of points and miles has plenty of intricacies, and even experts can underutilize their own cards. Although I’m disappointed that I haven’t taken advantage of my Citi Premier Card recently, I’m excited to start making the most of it this year. It offers some unique benefits that will allow me to continue to travel the world full-time with the help of points and miles.

Travel points on credit cards, explained

PayPal Editorial Staff

March 14, 2024

Savvy shoppers can turn everyday spending into exciting adventures by harnessing the power of travel points on credit cards.

Travel points on credit cards are rewards earned for eligible purchases. When someone accumulates enough points, they can redeem them for travel-related expenses like flights, accommodations, or upgrades.

From earning to redeeming, discover the world of travel reward points in this guide.

How do travel points work?

Travel points on credit cards work by rewarding people for their spending. When someone uses their credit card for eligible purchases, they may earn a certain number of points or miles based on the card's rewards program. These points accumulate over time and can be redeemed for travel costs.

Some cards or reward programs also offer flexible redemption options, allowing individuals to transfer points to airline or hotel loyalty programs.

The more someone spends on their card, the more travel points they may accumulate. However, it’s important to practice responsible spending and not make purchases simply to earn more points.

While some credit cards may be specifically noted as travel credit cards or offered in tandem with airline companies, many rewards credit cards can still be used to earn points or cash back to spend on travel or lodging. There may also be rewards programs via cash back apps that offer earning potential for spending with certain travel-related companies or airlines. For example, PayPal users can view travel-related deals and rewards offerings in the Travel category on the PayPal app . Rewards earning and redemption options will vary depending on card provider and/or rewards program.

Potential pros and cons of travel points

Some benefits of travel points may be:

  • Free or discounted travel expenses:  Travel points may be redeemed for complimentary or discounted flights, hotel stays, and even upgrades, allowing for cost savings on travel expenses.
  • Travel perks:  Some travel rewards cards provide access to airline or hotel loyalty program benefits, such as priority boarding, lounge access, and room upgrades.
  • Flexible redemption:  Many programs offer flexible redemption options, including the ability to transfer points to partner airlines or hotels, providing more choices for travelers.

Before signing up for a travel rewards credit card, consider the possible risks of travel points:

  • Limited flexibility:  Some travel rewards programs may have restrictions or blackout dates. Points may also have expiration dates — if unused, someone may lose their rewards.
  • High annual fees:  Many premium travel rewards cards come with annual fees, which may offset the value of the rewards.
  • Increased spending:  To earn travel points, people must use their credit card, which can lead to debt if not managed responsibly.

How to earn travel points

To earn travel points, someone generally needs to use a travel rewards credit card on eligible purchases. Over time, they may accumulate enough points to enjoy a benefit like free or reduced airfare or a discounted hotel stay.

Beyond everyday spending, here are other ways to potentially earn travel points:

  • Sign-up bonuses:  Many travel rewards credit cards offer sign-up bonuses when opening a new account and meeting a spending requirement within a specified timeframe.
  • Frequent flyer and hotel loyalty programs:  When someone flies with a specific airline or stays at a particular hotel chain consistently, they may accumulate points or miles that can be redeemed for future travel.
  • Online shopping portals:  Some airlines and credit card companies have online shopping portals that offer bonus points for making purchases through their platforms.

Accumulating travel points requires responsible financial management, including paying off credit card balances in full each month to avoid interest charges . Additionally, check for any annual fees associated with travel rewards credit cards and ensure that the benefits outweigh the costs.

How to redeem travel points

Travel rewards credit cards may offer several redemption options, from flights or hotels to vacation packages or statement credits. When booking through a rewards portal, people typically have the option to pay with points or a combination of points and cash.

The redemption process may vary slightly depending on the specific travel rewards program or credit card. Always read the terms and conditions of the rewards program and credit card to understand any restrictions, blackout dates, and expiration policies associated with the points.

Wells fargo launches a new travel rewards program with 6 transfer partners and more to come, qualified wells fargo cardholders will get a big boost to their rewards points' value..

thumbnail

Wells Fargo is making a big splash with the introduction of a transferable travel rewards program. Starting April 4, 2024, you'll be able to transfer Wells Fargo Rewards points to six travel loyalty programs and more partners are expected to be added. Transfers will be available for all points-based Wells Fargo credit cards , such as the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card and the new Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Journey Visa® Card . If you have either of these cards, you'll be able to combine rewards from any other Wells Fargo-branded consumer card and transfer those rewards to the new travel partners.

CNBC Select has the details of what we know about this program so far and how it compares to other credit card rewards programs .

What credit cards earn transferable Wells Fargo Rewards?

There are currently two Wells Fargo rewards credit cards that will allow point transfers once the system is in place:

Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card

  • Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Journey Visa® Card (open for in-branch applications on March 9, 2024, and online applications on March 20, 2024)

The Autograph card has no annual fee, earns 3X points in useful spending categories and offers an intro 0% APR for new cardholders. It's uncommon for a no-annual-fee card to earn transferable points, and given this card's other benefits it's easily among the best travel credit cards with no annual fee .

Earn unlimited 3X points on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans. Plus earn 1X points on other purchases

Welcome bonus

Earn 20,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months - that's a $200 cash redemption value.

$0 annual fee

0% intro APR for 12 months from account opening on purchases

Regular APR

20.24%, 25.24% or 29.99% variable APR

Balance transfer fee

Excellent/Good

See rates and fees , terms apply.

The Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Journey Visa® Card is a mid-tier travel credit card with a $95 annual fee that can be partially offset by a $50 annual airfare credit. The rewards it earns for hotel (5X points) and airline (4X points) purchases are hard to beat because you'll get that high rate of return regardless of how you book (e.g., you don't have to book through the issuer's travel portal).

Cardholders also get 3X points on other travel spending and dining purchases, which makes this card one of the most rewarding options for common travel expenses. It has additional perks such as cell phone protection , trip cancellation and interruption protection and no foreign transaction fees .

Wells Fargo told CNBC Select that the rewards you earn from any Wells Fargo-branded consumer cards can be converted into transferable points, provided you also have either the Autograph or the Autograph Journey card. For example, the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card earns 2% cash rewards back on all purchases (see rates and fees ) and if you also have the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card , you'll be able to transfer those rewards to Wells Fargo travel partners.

Wells Fargo Rewards travel partners

There are currently six Wells Fargo Rewards transfer partners, and it has said more will be announced this year. As of April 4th, you'll be able to transfer Wells Fargo points to these five airline partners at a 1:1 ratio:

  • Aer Lingus AerClub
  • Air France/KLM Flying Blue (partners with Delta)
  • Avianca LifeMiles (partners with United Airlines)
  • British Airways Executive Club (partners with American Airlines and Alaska Airlines)
  • Iberia Plus (partners with American Airlines and Alaska Airlines)

In addition, Wells Fargo points transfer to Choice Hotels at a 1:2 ratio.

While this is a smaller list of partners, it's a decent start because it gives you access to award flights with all three of the major airline alliances. There are quite a few sweet spots (a flight or hotel stay that gives you outsized value for your rewards) that you can book with this initial group of programs.

Use Wells Fargo Rewards for Oneworld flights

British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus are all part of the Oneworld alliance , which includes American Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Iberia is an excellent option for business-class award flights to Europe because you can book one-way off-peak business-class flights from a handful of U.S. cities to places like Barcelona and Madrid for only 34,000 points each way. If Ireland is on your bucket list, Aer Lingus offers one-way awards to the Emerald Isle from East Coast cities such as Boston and New York for 13,000 points on off-peak dates. You can even fly from West Coast cities such as San Francisco or Seattle to Dublin for only 16,250 points each way on off-peak dates. The best part is, over 30 weeks of the year qualify for off-peak prices.

Use Wells Fargo Rewards for Star Alliance flights

Avianca may have the most versatile program of Wells Fargo's partners. It's a member of the Star Alliance , which is the largest global airline alliance. When you transfer points to Avianca, you can book awards flights with airlines such as United , Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines and Air Canada. You can book one-way business-class awards from the U.S. to Europe for around 63,000 miles or one-way domestic awards starting at 7,500 miles or less. Avianca charges a $25 award booking fee but it doesn't add fuel surcharges, so the fees are generally less than other options for international business class awards.

Use Wells Fargo Rewards for SkyTeam flights

Flying Blue is the loyalty program for Air France and the Dutch airline KLM (both part of the SkyTeam alliance , which includes Delta) and it has several features that make it extremely useful. There are monthly Promo Rewards which include discounts of 25%-50% on different routes and classes of service. You can also add free stopovers on many award flights, which unlocks all sorts of options. You could book a flight to Germany and add in a free visit to Paris for no additional miles, and each stopover can last from 24 hours to up to a year.

Use Wells Fargo Rewards for hotel deals in Norway and Japan

Choice Hotels is the only Wells Fargo hotel partner. It includes brands such as EconoLodge, Rodeway Inn, Comfort, Quality Inn and Sleep Inn, which typically aren't the most aspirational properties to visit. However, it also includes upscale brands such as Cambria Hotels and the Ascend Hotel Collection. Certain geographic areas offer great value for Choice points (especially when you factor in the 1:2 transfer ratio with your Wells Fargo rewards), and include locations in Norway and Japan.

Choice Hotels award prices vary, but you can book The Clarion Hotel The Hub in Oslo, Norway for 16,000 Choice points per room on dates it costs $350+ a night. You'd only need 8,000 Wells Fargo points to book a night, which is a value of over four cents per point. This is an exceptionally nice hotel and includes a free full breakfast spread which may feature ingredients from its rooftop garden. In Japan, there are lots of Choice Hotels available for 8,000 Choice points per night (4,000 Wells Fargo points). While the Japanese Choice Hotels generally cost less, you can often get a solid value per point. With the Autograph Journey's welcome bonus of 60,000 points, you could realistically book all your hotels for a two-week trip to Japan.

How this travel program stacks up against the competition

It's difficult to judge Wells Fargo Rewards against other programs such as Chase Ultimate Rewards® , Citi ThankYou or American Express Membership Rewards because these other programs have been around for years. Wells Fargo has far fewer partner programs, but it will grow from here.

Wells Fargo's partnerships overlap with other travel rewards programs, which makes the rewards you earn potentially more useful. If you want to book an expensive business-class award with Avianca, you could transfer points from American Express, Capital One and Wells Fargo to the same Avianca account. So as it stands, Wells Fargo Rewards are at the very least a strong supplement to other rewards you may have, and it also has several cards with unusually high rates of return in specific categories.

However, anyone who wants to use credit card rewards for hotel stays may have more flexible options than Wells Fargo points right now. For hotel awards, most people are better off with a card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , which earns points you can transfer to Marriott, IHG and Hyatt. With the Sapphire Preferred , you can also book hotels through the Chase Travel portal and pay with points at an elevated value of 1.25 cents each. That means that Chase Ultimate Rewards® currently gives you more options for booking hotel stays with points.

If you're a loyal Choice Privileges member or can take advantage of one of the program's sweet spots, Wells Fargo's 1:2 transfer ratio can be a stellar deal. Plus the Autograph Journey card earns 5X points at hotels, so you could effectively earn 10X Choice points on hotel spending. The only other major rewards program that matches Wells Fargo's 1:2 transfer ratio to Choice is Citi ThankYou . You can access all of Citi's transfer partners with a card such as the Citi Premier® Card . For a limited time, you can earn 10X points on hotels and car rentals booked through the Citi Travel portal (valid through June 30, 2024).

Bottom line

Wells Fargo is revamping its rewards program and adding transfer partners to select cards. While the list of travel partners is smaller than other programs, this can dramatically increase the value of the rewards you earn with Wells Fargo's travel credit cards. If you're looking for a travel credit card, the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card and Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Journey Visa® Card are both options worth considering.

Gas Credit Card Frequently Asked Questions

What credit score do you need to get a gas credit card.

You need between a good credit score and an excellent credit score to be eligible to apply for most gas credit cards on our list. This translates to a FICO score of at least 670. However, some gas station chains have their own proprietary gas cards that you can use only at gas stations. These cards tend to be easier to get approved for, but keep in mind that you'll have very little flexibility in how you earn and redeem rewards.

Are gas credit cards worth it?

Gas credit cards are easily worth it for those who drive a lot — especially now that gas prices are extra unsavory. Earning rewards for these purchases can make the price increases a little easier to bear. It's even better if you pick a card that also earns bonus rewards in other categories where you spend a lot of money. For instance, road warriors who spend a lot of overnights away from home might consider a card like the US Bank Altitude Connect, which earns 4x on gas and travel (including hotels).

What's the best gas credit card with no annual fee?

The best gas credit card with no annual fee depends on what other categories you spend in and the rewards you prefer to earn. If you're a Costco member, it's hard to beat the earning rate on the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi. Otherwise, the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card, Chase Freedom Unlimited®, Citi Custom Cash℠ Card, and U.S. Bank Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Card are all solid options.

Does Costco gas take credit cards?

Costco takes credit cards — but it only accepts Visa credit cards at U.S. Costco gas stations (like the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa Signature® Card, and the U.S. Bank Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Card).

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Chose the Best Gas Credit Cards

Business Insider's credit cards division works independently of our company's business division to scrutinize and compare credit cards that are targeted for various demographics. We will tell you honestly which credit card is most likely to suit your financial goals — and the pitfalls you may encounter.

We considered rewards cards that are currently available to new applicants in deciding on the top credit cards for gas purchases, along with these factors:

  • Simplicity  — Does the card make it easy to redeem rewards, and have a program that's easy to understand?
  • Earning potential — Does the card earn generous rewards on gas, and are there other bonus categories that line up with everyday spending habits?
  • Welcome bonus — Credit cards that offer a sign-up bonus or other incentives are more appealing, especially if they don't charge an annual fee.
  • Options for different types of consumers — We included cards that are geared to all kinds of users, from products that earn travel points and cash-back to credit cards that earn rewards for electric vehicle charging.

  • Citi ThankYou points are valuable because the program partners with 14 airlines and 3 hotel chains.
  • Citi's hotel partner programs are Choice Privileges, Wyndham Rewards, and Accor Live Limitless.
  • Other partners include JetBlue, Air France-KLM, Singapore Airlines, and Cathay Pacific.

Overview of Citi Points Transfer

Earning transferable points with rewards credit cards is one of the best strategies you can use to maximize returns on your spending. Programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards ® and Amex Membership Rewards are popular with award travelers, in part because their transfer partners include numerous domestic airlines and popular hotel chains.

The Citi ThankYou Rewards program is a bit of an underdog in this regard, with just one domestic carrier (JetBlue) among airline transfer options.

Benefits of Transferring Citi Points

Despite having few domestic airline options, you can still squeeze excellent value from the program — in fact, some of Citi's international airline transfer partners offer lucrative sweet spots that allow you to book award flights for far less than other frequent flyer programs charge.

In addition, the program added Choice Privileges, Wyndham Rewards, and most recently Accor Live Limitless (ALL) to its partner roster, marking the first hotel transfer options since Hilton left the program several years ago.

That's on top of the numerous other ways to use your rewards points, like booking travel directly through the Citi ThankYou Travel Portal or cashing in rewards for gift cards and merchandise. These options are available to any ThankYou Rewards cardholder, but to unlock the ability to transfer points to all of Citi's airline partners, you'll need to have the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card (no longer available to new applicants) in your wallet.

Best Airline Transfer Partners

As with most transferable points programs, there are definitely some partners that are better than others. Depending on the partner and how you redeem your points, the value you get from your transfer can vary significantly.

Here's a look at the best Citi airline transfer partners.

Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles

It may seem strange that one of the best uses of Citi ThankYou points is transferring to a European airline that most people are likely never to fly. But the real value of Turkish Airlines miles lies in using the Miles & Smiles frequent flyer program to book award flights on its Star Alliance partners.

For example, the Miles & Smiles partner award chart requires only 10,500 Turkish miles for an economy-class flight anywhere within the US, including Hawaii, on Star Alliance partner United Airlines. If you booked the exact same flight through the United MileagePlus frequently flyer program, you'd pay 25,000 United miles.

Using the Miles & Smiles program does take a bit of patience as its online booking site can be hard to navigate, but cheap award prices like these can make it worth the extra effort.

Air France-KLM Flying Blue

Air France and KLM share the Flying Blue frequent flyer program, and one of the best uses of Flying Blue miles is its recurring promo rewards. Each month, Flying Blue publishes a list of routes with a 25 to 50% discount on mileage costs. This can be a great way to stretch the value of your ThankYou points.

Rates for a one-way economy flight from the US to Europe range from about 15,000 to 30,000 Flying Blue miles. The number of miles required varies quite a bit depending on the date and if the route is on a monthly promo award. Keep in mind Flying Blue adds more taxes and fees than other programs, so you'll have to weigh the savings in miles and the increased cash cost.

Because it's a transfer partner of all of the major transferable rewards currencies, Flying Blue is a great place to combine points balances from different programs.

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

Singapore Airlines is also a member of the Star Alliance, which means that you can use KrisFlyer miles to book travel on partner airlines like United, Air Canada, and Lufthansa.

In fact, using Singapore Airlines is also cheaper than using United's own miles for flights anywhere in the continental US to Hawaii. Singapore also has a non-alliance partnership with Alaska Airlines, and you can use as few as 11,500 KrisFlyer miles to get to Hawaii as well.

For luxury aficionados, Singapore Airlines also flies the ultra-premium Singapore Suites first class on certain routes. Singapore rarely opens up award seats in Suites Class to partner airlines, so transferring to KrisFlyer is often the only way to book these bucket-list awards.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Although Virgin Atlantic is headquartered in the UK, its mileage program offers a fair amount of value for US travelers. You'll often get the best deal from Virgin Atlantic miles when you book award flights on its SkyTeam partners, like Delta.

Because Delta no longer publishes an award chart, the cost of a flight in Delta SkyMiles can vary wildly depending on the route, date, and number of stops. Before you book an award flight using your Delta miles, it pays to check with Virgin Atlantic. It is quite common that the exact same Delta flight will cost fewer miles if you book with Flying Club miles.

Avianca LifeMiles

Avianca is also a member of the Star Alliance, which means that you can use its miles to book partners like United, Lufthansa, and Ethiopian Airlines. Avianca's award chart divides the US into three separate regions, with flights within a region requiring only 7,500 Avianca Lifemiles to book. Some US airline frequent flyer programs would charge 12,500 miles or more for the exact same flights.

Avianca also offers regular promotions that offer huge (150% or more) bonuses on buying or transferring LifeMiles. This can make it easy to top off your balance if you just need a few more miles to book your next trip.

Good Citi Airline Transfer Partners

Some Citi airline transfer partners can provide decent value, but only in certain situations.

Etihad Guest

Etihad is not a member of any airline alliance but has a number of non-alliance partnerships that can provide good value for your Citi ThankYou points. These include Czech Airways (Prague to Seoul in business class for 25,610 Etihad Guest miles) and Royal Air Maroc (New York-JFK to Casablanca for 22,000 miles in economy or 44,000 miles in business class).

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

Cathay Pacific is a member of the Oneworld alliance and has a distance-based award chart. The number of miles you need will depend on whether you are flying only Cathay Pacific or if you are flying one of its Oneworld partners, like American Airlines or British Airways. A flight from Los Angeles to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific is only 27,000 miles in economy or 84,000 miles in business class.

Qantas Frequent Flyer

Like Cathay Pacific, Qantas is also a member of the Oneworld alliance and also has a distance-based award chart. The best value for using Qantas miles is on short flights under 600 flown miles on either Qantas or Oneworld partners like American Airlines. These short flights can be had for only 8,000 Qantas miles.

JetBlue TrueBlue

The number of points required for a JetBlue award flight is directly tied to the cash price of a ticket, so it's hard to get outsized value from your TrueBlue points. Still, it is possible to save points by transferring your Citi ThankYou points to JetBlue instead of using them directly to book a paid flight through the Citi portal.

Remember that JetBlue is the only Citi airline transfer partner that you can use without having the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card (though at a lesser ratio of 1,000 ThankYou points to 800 JetBlue points).

Citi Airline Transfer Partners That Aren't Great Value

The rest of the Citi ThankYou airline transfer partners are generally not worth considering, except for extremely niche redemptions.

Aeromexico Club Premier

Aeromexico uses kilometers instead of miles, so its award chart is generally inflated by 1.6x compared to other programs. While other bank program points, such as Amex Membership Rewards , transfer to Aeromexico at a rate of 1:1.6, Citi transfers at only 1:1.

Eva Air Infinity MileageLands

The award chart for Eva Air Infinity MileageLands is not spectacular when compared to most other airline programs, and you'll generally find better value elsewhere. Eva Air does have some generous stopover allowances, though you can't book stopovers online — instead, you'll need to call the airline directly.

Emirates Skywards

While Emirates first-class cabins are among the best in the world, it's best to use partner miles to book these awards. While Emirates recently reduced the astronomical fuel surcharges they charge on Skywards award tickets, there are other mileage programs that offer better value.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club

Like fellow Gulf carrier Emirates, Qatar has a great premium cabin flight experience that is best booked with partner miles. In Qatar's case, rather than transferring Citi ThankYou points to Qatar Airways Privilege Club, it's better to use American Airlines AAdvantage miles to fly on Qatar Airways.

Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus

Thai Airways is currently in the middle of bankruptcy, spurred on at least in part by the limited travel demand due to the pandemic. And while bankruptcy does not mean that your Royal Orchid Plus miles would all of a sudden become worthless, it does give you one more reason to avoid transferring your ThankYou points here.

Hotel Partners

It's possible to get decent value from Citi's hotel partners, Choice, Wyndham, and Accor, but because many of their brands are budget-friendly, you might be better off saving your points and paying cash instead. It's also possible to redeem Citi ThankYou points at a rate of 1 cent apiece for stays at these chains by booking through the Citi Travel Portal.

Accor Live Limitless (ALL)

Citi's newest transfer partner is Accor Live Limitless (ALL), which comprises 45 brands across over 5,000 properties worldwide. Accor hotels include Fairmont, Raffles, Sofitel, SLS, and Swisshotel, but most of its properties are located outside the US, making this a better deal for international travelers.

This transfer option is only available to Citi Premier and Prestige cardholders, with a transfer ratio of 2:1 (2 Citi points equals 1 Accor point). Accor doesn't have an award chart; instead, you can redeem points in 2,000-point increments toward a stay discount, where 2,000 points equal 40 euros off your bill. That makes Accor points worth just over 2 cents each, but since there's a 2:1 transfer ratio from Citi, you'll only get a value of just over 1 cent per Citi point (depending on the current exchange rate).

Choice Privileges

The loyalty program of Choice Hotels, Choice Privileges includes brands like Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, Clarion, Cambria, and Ascend Collection hotels. Award prices start at 8,000 points per night and go up to 35,000 points per night, with a few exceptions. Rates also vary depending on the season and even the day of the week you stay.

If you have the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card, the transfer ratio is 1:2 (1 ThankYou point equals 2 Choice points), with transfers in 1,000-point increments. The no-annual-fee Citi Rewards+® Card and Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card have a transfer ratio of 1:1.5 (1 ThankYou points equals 1.5 Choice points), with transfers also in 1,000-point increments. And if you have the Citi® Double Cash Card , you also have the ability to transfer to Choice at a 1:1.5 ratio.

Wyndham Rewards

Wyndham Rewards includes familiar brands like Super 8, Days Inn, Howard Johnson, and Travelodge — as well as over 40,000 vacation rentals through its partnership with Vacasa.

With the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card, you'll get a 1:1 transfer ratio to Wyndham. Otherwise, with the Citi Rewards+® Card, Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card, and Citi® Double Cash Card, the ratio is 5:4 (1,000 Citi ThankYou points = 800 Wyndham points).

Wyndham's award structure is simple — you'll pay 7,500, 15,000, or 30,000 points for an award night, depending on the property. With Vacasa vacation rentals, you'll pay these fixed points rates per listed bedroom.

Other Rewards Programs

In addition to airline and hotel transfer partners, Citi ThankYou has one retail transfer partner.

Sears Shop Your Way

You can transfer your Citi ThankYou points to Sears Shop Your Way points at a rate of 1:10. Shop Your Way points are worth 0.1 cents each, and Sears does sell some third-party gift cards that you can buy with Shop Your Way points.

This would allow you to effectively redeem your Citi ThankYou points for 1 cent per point for gift cards (or other merchandise) available for purchase at Sears. Unless you already have Sears Shop Your Way points and need to top off your account for a redemption, it's easier to redeem Citi ThankYou points directly for gift cards through the ThankYou portal.

Transferring your Citi ThankYou points is a fairly straightforward process. Once you log into your account at thankyou.com, find "More Ways To Redeem" in the top header, then choose "Points Transfer." Or, select "Transfer & Share" in the main menu under "See everything that can be done with ThankYou Points."

If you're looking for an all-purpose travel credit card with strong rewards, many ways to use your points, and an annual fee under $100, the Citi Premier should be on your shortlist. Beyond the welcome bonus offer, the Citi Premier® Card offers great 3x earning categories that just about anyone can take advantage of — and the rewards it earns are incredibly flexible.

For most of these partners, the transfer ratio is 1:1, with transfers in 1,000-point increments. The only exception for Citi Premier and Prestige cardholders is Accor (2:1). For other cardholders, JetBlue, Choice, and Wyndham, which are the only transfer partners available (along with Sears Shop Your Way rewards) if you don't have a Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card have transfer ratios and availability that vary depending on the card you have.

It's important to note that ThankYou points transfers are one-way and nonrefundable — once you move ThankYou points to a partner, you can not transfer them back to ThankYou Rewards.

How to Earn Citi ThankYou points

You can earn Citi ThankYou points through welcome bonuses and spending on a variety of different Citi credit cards , including:

Remember, you can only access all of Citi's transfer partners if you have the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card. If you have multiple Citi ThankYou credit cards, you can combine your points into one ThankYou account.

Citi points can be transferred to a variety of airline and hotel partners, but not all airlines or hotels are partners. It's important to check the current list of Citi transfer partners for available options.

Transfer times vary by partner. While some transfers are instant, others may take several days to process. It's advisable to plan ahead if you need to use transferred points for specific bookings.

Once transferred, points are subject to the expiration policies of the partner program. This means they could expire if not used within the timeframe set by the partner.

Generally, there are no fees for transferring points from Citi to its partners, but it's always best to confirm any potential costs directly with Citi before making a transfer.

The best use of transferred points varies depending on personal travel preferences, the specific transfer partner, and the value of flights or hotel stays. Comparing redemption options can help maximize value.
