Rod Stewart’s Young Heart Puts on a Stunning Display at A Day on the Green

Rod isn’t raging against the dying of the light – he’s kicking its ass in a satin jacket and dolce & gabbana shoes.

The rock giants are simultaneously transversing the globe in a last act of rebellion. When the whole shebang kicked off in – arguably – 1954, no one expected the generation that followed to still be out there on the road as they were pushing, or passing, 80.

But the likes of Paul McCartney, Elton John , and the younger men among them, Bruce Springsteen and Sting, continue to pull record crowds.

Although he hasn’t quite called ‘a last lap,’ Rod Stewart has strongly alluded to it: wondering aloud how much longer he can go on and predicting this will be his last Australian tour.  Playing a mix of indoor arenas and outdoor A Day on the Green festivals, this reviewer caught Rod on the second of a two night stint at Sirromet.

Earlier in the day, Jon Stevens played a mix of solo material, Noiseworks’ favourites and INXS covers. With the full house prepped to sing, Cyndi Lauper then emerged from an on-stage door as visuals on a giant television screen transported us back to her 1980’s heyday.

Cyndi didn’t disappoint. Fronting a tight band, she performed her unique mix of punk-pop and soul. Opening with “Hole In My Heart (All The Way To China)”,  she took us through a catalogue of hits that included “Money (Changes Everything)”, “True Colours”, “She Bop”, and a song with a melody good enough for Miles Davis to cover, “Time After Time”.

Early on Cyndi took a moment to stop and ask the audience to take in the sunset. Later she shed a tear recalling her time in bar bands covering Rod’s “Sailing” before she gave us a chorus of it and morphed it into her own “Sally’s Pigeon’s”. The apex of her hour-long set was a socio-political preamble, followed by a rousing “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”.

After blowing out a show due to poor health at the Mt Duneed Estate a week prior, Rod hit the stage in particularly fine voice.

Shaking his set up when playing multiple nights, Stewart benched his usual cover of Robert Palmer’s “Addicted To Love” and opened with a rip-roaring “Infatuation”. Early highlights included “You Wear It Well” and Chuck Berry’s “Sweet Little Rock N’ Roller”. The crowd were on their feet immediately and stayed there for at least the next hour.

Stewart began his set like a man playing an encore: having so much fun at the high voltage intensity of it all, at one point he even slapped his own buttocks.

When it came to the band, no expense was spared with thirteen players on board. That’s two drummers, a harpist, string players, a trio of backing singers and a tuxedoed core band. Turning on a dime, the ensemble easily moved between rockabilly, blues, folk, power-pop and seventies disco.

Rod showed off his vocal prowess on killer ballads “The First Cut Is The Deepest”,  “I Don’t Want To Talk About It”, “Tonight’s The Night (Gonna Be Alright)”,  “You’re In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)”, and the show’s closer, “Sailing”.

“Maggie May” was performed a smidge slower and without the obligatory kicking of footballs by Rod into the audience. We can only assume in 2023 that occupational health and safety weren’t keen on the idea.

While Rod ducked off a couple of times for a quick costume change, the trio of backing singers took centre stage for terrific covers of Donna Summer’s “Hot Love” and Labelle’s “Lady Marmalade”. The latter segued into Rod’s own disco classic “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy”.

Here was a guy closer to eighty than he is to seventy delivering one of the best sets to grace the venue. If there was a single highlight that shone above everything else it might have been “Young Turks” with Rod delivering the imprimatur, “young hearts/be free tonight/time is on your side”.

The show was a knock-down, drag ’em out, triumph. Rod isn’t raging against the dying of the light – he’s kicking its ass in a satin jacket and Dolce & Gabbana shoes.

Rod Stewart review: The Hits Australian Tour at RAC Arena with special guests Cyndi Lauper and Jon Stevens

Headshot of Laura Newell

Not afraid of getting political, both Rod Stewart and Cyndi Lauper championed causes close to their hearts as they took to the stage in Perth on Saturday night.

While ‘80s mega-star Lauper dedicated a somewhat lower-energy version of her seminal hit Girls Just Wanna Have Fun to the cause of female human rights, Sir Rod opined that the “most important part” of his show was a touching tribute to the people of Ukraine.

Rod Stewart with Special Guests Cyndi Lauper and Jon Stevens: The Hits! Australia Tour, Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne, March 14th 2023 – Live Review

Have you ever enjoyed a concert from start to finish?

On Tuesday the 14 th of March at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena, I attended Rod Stewart ’s ‘The Hits! Australia Tour’ with Cyndi Lauper and Aussie acclaimed rock singer Jon Stevens as supports. And it was a damn good time indeed.

First up, Jon Stevens provided powerful vocals and sung set which consisted of songs from his time in INXS and Noiseworks . By the end of his brief set, ending with ‘Touch’ , which I was surprised that I knew, I wanted to see more. I’m definitely making a mental note to try see him on his own headlining tour in the future.

Next up was Ms Cyndi Lauper . Lauper is iconic in every sense of the word. I have loved her songs and songwriting since I was a kid and she did not disappoint. Sporting a colourful suit jacket and a lilac purple mohawk, Lauper entered the stage through a door in a faux brick wall that had graffiti art of her on it. She was sassy, funny, full of energy, stated it took her a long time to make her stand up, was quirky and very interactive with the crowd.

Affectionately addressing the audience with, “Hello my darlings, how the hell are you?” and “Get up and freakin’ dance!” , it didn’t take long before Lauper had the Melbourne crowd captivated by her charisma, unique style, and talent. She worked the entire stage, was so energetic running around, and it was a joy to watch. I mean, it’s not every day that you get to see a music legend sporting a purple mohawk who can play both the recorder ( she shared that she left the trombone at home ) and the mountain dulcimer.

Admitting that she hasn’t toured since 2019 and accompanied by a 6-piece band, Lauper revealed her delight for Ke Huy Quan from The Goonies film winning an Oscar for Everything Everywhere All At Once and that “No matter where you come from, you can do it.” . During her 11-track setlist, Lauper dished out songs including ‘Time After Time’ and ‘True Colors’ , the former which she shared that she first sung to Australian audiences on The Molly Meldrum Show back in the 80s, and the latter transforming into a song of empowerment. With ‘Time After Time’ she encouraged the audience to sing along, creating a beautiful moment. Lauper also surprised me with ‘I Drove All Night’ , a song I never realised was hers first before Celine Dion had it, showcasing her strong and impressive vocals.

While The Brains cover ‘Money Changes Everything’ was fantastic to hear live, and I was delighted to hear a little bit of ‘Not My Father’s Son’ which she penned for the musical Kinky Boots ( I am obsessed with this musical, it is fantastic and a you must see it if you ever get the chance ), her most powerful moment on stage was during ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ .

Lauper cleverly infused the song with her stance and protest for women’s rights and equality, stating that in her country right now, women’s civil rights are being stripped and that it is creepy that the law is taking authority over the human body. During her performance of this song, shown on the big screen behind her were photos of young girls and women holding with signs that read, “Girl’s Just Wanna Have Fun-damental Rights” . It was gut wrenching, genius, inspiring, and I loved her for it.

Before I knew it, it was Sir Rod Stewart ’s time to shine. After wondering where the screens were for his performance, it was soon revealed that the entire stage was the screen! This impressed and amazed me. It also looked so cool! Accompanied on stage with the best musicians that money can buy, Stewart ’s 12-piece band included violinists, a harp player, and a saxophone player. The rock legend playfully addressed the crowd throughout the night, opening with, “Good evening my friends. It’s been a long time and we’re going to fucking enjoy ourselves.” And we did.

I learnt a lot that night as there were many songs Rod Stewart performed that I didn’t realise were covers. And during his 24-song setlist, Stewart promised that the night and show would get better as the concert went on, consistently impressing with his charm, his skills swinging his microphone stand around, his relaxed and cheeky stage presence, his fun juicy stories, his flashy multiple outfits ( my favourite being the sparkly black suit ), and his phenomenal vocals. He sounds even better live than he does on his records!

All the hits and fantastic covers Stewart has made his own were there including ‘Maggie May’ , ‘Some Guys Have All the Luck’ , ‘Forever Young’ , ‘Ooh La La’ , ‘The First Cut Is the Deepest’ , ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ , and ‘Young Turks’ , just to name a few. Rod Stewart even dedicated his song ‘ You’re in My Heart (The Final Acclaim)’ to his favourite football team, Scottish premiership cup club, Celtic.

There was an Aussie connection here as Ange Postecoglou, Australian association football manager and former player, is the current manager of the Celtic team and its coach. An image was shown on the big screen of Ange grinning from ear to ear and holding the Scottish League championship cup. The love for the sport was shared again during the song ‘Stay With Me’ when Rod Stewart ’s band members threw footballs into the crowd. I expected them to bounce around above the audience members seated on the floor but they never did, with audience members who caught all the footballs choosing to keep them. Actually, I probably would have done the same.

While I loved the upbeat songs including Rod Stewart ’s ‘Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?’ , I also enjoyed it when Stewart dialled the mood down to a more chill vibe, performing The Impressions’ tune, ‘People Get Ready’ which I never knew was a civil rights song, and the Van Morrison cover of ‘Have I Told You Lately’ which I’ve only ever known Stewart ’s version of and adore.

However, Rod Stewart ’s most powerful moments were when he performed ‘The Killing of Georgie’ , which tells of the story of a gay man who was killed in New York City, a song which is still as relevant as ever, and ‘Rhythm of My Heart’ , a Marc Jordan cover made famous by Stewart that I never realised was an anti-war song. Stewart specifically changed into a blue shirt and yellow jacket for this number and dedicated the song to the fight against “stupid fucking Putin” and the people of Ukraine. During the song, photography was shown of Ukrainian people, soldiers and civilians trying to survive this on-going war, and the current Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Genuinely grateful and bowing after ever song he performed, Rod Stewart shared with the Melbourne audience that he first came to Australia with his group The Faces back in 1973. Stewart bided farewell for the night by ending with the song ‘Sailing’ and stating to the adoring crowd, “Thank-you for indulging me. I love you, I love you, I love you.”

Not only was I super impressed by Stewart and Lauper’s music, stage presence, and talents, but I also appreciated how outspoken they both were. Known for their singing voices, they are also using their voices for good. Honest, heartfelt, and inspiring in every way, after witnessing them live on stage and in their element for the very first time, I love them both even more than ever I did before. When I grow up, I want to be as cool as Rod Stewart and Cyndi Lauper.

There’s one more show in Melbourne tonight at Rod Laver Arena. For more information on the rest of the tour and ticketing, visit: https://www.livenation.com.au/artist-rod-stewart-438 https://rodstewart.com https://cyndilauper.com Photography by Grant Alexander.

Rod Stewart Performs Incredible First Melbourne Show ’Sailing’ Through a Timeless Setlist

by Paul Cashmere on March 15, 2023

Rod Stewart is unbelievably good at age 78. It seemed the most asked question leading into the tour was ‘can he still sing’?. The answer is ‘fuck yeah’.

Right from the start with his cover of Robert Palmer’s ‘Addicted To Love’, Sir Rod pranced on stage with all the glitter and glam of old school professionalism. This was an amazing concert. It felt good to be in the room. For 2 hours and 5 minutes, all eyes were on Rod. Whatever was happening in the world was left outside to deal with later. This audience was in for a good time.

Rod’s point of difference with the recent Elton and Sting show is his ability to improvise his setlist. If you are old enough to remember The Faces, (Rod’s band of the early 70s), you will remember how sloppy they were. (And I used sloppy in a good ol’ rock and roll sense). They would start, fuck it up, stop, start again and it just made for a better show. We had one of those moments with this show when someone in the band didn’t notice ‘Stay With Me’ was a last minute addition to the setlist and launched into ‘Da Ya Think I’m Sexy’. Rod stopped, and started it again. How appropriate that they fucked it up with a Faces song.

None of that matters at a Rod Stewart concert. Rod’s show is his party and everyone in the audience is his guest.

Rod is also a gracious host at his party, sharing his stories, giving us all a glimpse into his life. One story was about how The Faces members used to share hotel rooms. “We took all the furniture in the room and put it down the middle. And then when we got a couple of girls in there, we couldn’t stop fucking giggling. The girls went home”.

There was also the recollection of his first Australia tour (with Faces in 1974) when he looked into the audience and someone was holding the sign “fuck off Pommy bastards”.

There was the serious moment. ‘Rhythm of My Heart’ was dedicated to Ukraine, with Rod calling out ‘stupid fucking Putin’ and filling the screens with images of war-torn Ukraine as the band performed the classic hit, and climaxing with an image of Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to thunderous applause from the audience.

The highlights from this show happen fast and furious. There were no lows. We are navigated through various eras. Rod’s setlist is a time-machine. We are transported back to 1973 for a tribute to the Faces with ‘Ooh La La’, sung by Ron Wood on the original song. Rod doesn’t even appear on the Faces version. It was only the two Ronnies (Lane and Wood), Ian McLagan and Kenney Jones. Rod recorded his version of it on 1998’s ‘When We Were The New Boys’ as a tribute to the then recently deceased Ronnie Lane (1946-1997).

‘You’re In My Heart’ was dedicated to Melbourne soccer coach Ange Postecoglou who was soccer coach for Rod’s team Celtic United (name checked in the song).

There is also a tribute to Jeff Beck with ‘People Get Ready’ Rod was singer for the Jeff Beck Group before the Faces and sang vocals for 1985 Beck recording.

Rod also performed ‘The Killing of George Part 1’ at this show but not in Perth. It was a controversial song when released in 1976, the subject being about the murder of a gay friend Rod knew. He didn’t include Part 2 in the performance.

‘Da Ya Think I’m Sexy’ ends the main set and was followed by ‘Sailing’ in the encore. Two hours felt like 10 minutes.

Jon Stevens opened the show sandwiching his INXS era between his Noiseworks classics. Cyndi Lauper was the perfect before Rod with a good hour covering all of her classics as well as showcasing some of her more recent new music.

Review: Rod Stewart at RAC Arena

Rod Stewart at RAC Arena w/ Cyndi Lauper, Jon Stevens Saturday, March 11, 2023

Sir Roderick David Stewart is oddly underrated both as a songwriter and for his influence on rock and roll’s 70s heyday. His latter-day reputation as a crooning balladeer belies just how cool the former Faces frontman once was.

His close lineage with the Rolling Stones, and particularly Ronnie Wood with whom he co-wrote much of his best material prior to Wood joining the Stones in ’75, cannot be underestimated.  Rod Stewart ‘s influence on rock is up there with the greats.

Which made the funny old setlist he brought to RAC Arena for the opening night of perhaps his final Australian tour, all the more baffling. Where were the rockers that challenged the Stones for the 70s’ best swagger?  Stay With Me, Hot Legs, Every Picture Tells a Story ? The tender, lyrical ballads he staked his credibility on such as the ahead-of-its-time hate crime tale  The Killing of Georgie  or epic coming of age story  I Was Only Joking ?

Yes he’s 78-years old, and no one expects him to have the moves like Jagger, but Sir Mick’s Stones never disappoint in terms of playing their best tunes.

rod stewart australian tour reviews

Sir Rod Stewart

Putting aside the number of covers that most in attendance could've taken or left ( Lady Marmalade ? Really?), in fairness, Rod the Mod's always been fond of reinterpreting the songs of others. His  The First Cut is the Deepest  is more signature than the Cat Stevens' original. “You'll love this one," he jested to the crowd just before he played it, and it was undoubtedly a standout.

But his own  Maggie May  up next was even better. The mind-blowing stage set up came to life with lyrics flashing across what must have been 20 screens to ensure one of the night's biggest singalongs. Stewart's voice was in agelessly fine form. It was the only song lifted from his 1971 album  Every Picture Tells a Story,  also   his best record.

Originals such as this were few and far between but invariably they went down a treat.  You Wear it Well  from 1972 kickstarted the show properly after an odd homage to Robert Palmer's  Addicted to Love  opened the night, complete with dancing girls miming on guitars.

(This showmanship walked a fine line between kitsch and exploitative all night as Stewart's love of talented, much younger women was never in question… half of the 12-member strong backing band were virtuoso singers, strings and harp players who also just happened to be extremely attractive, very young women. What else would you expect from Sir Rod?)

rod stewart australian tour reviews

Another Stewart composition,  You're in My Heart (The Final Acclaim) , garnered perhaps the loudest singalong of the night.

These moments where the crowd got involved worked best.  Tonight's the Night  sat nicely alongside his well-known interpretations of  I Don't Want to Talk About It  and  Have I Told You Lately , in an acoustic section that made up some of the night's best moments.

His other highlights mostly came via political dedications to civil rights activism, and notably his tribute to Ukraine in support of their President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was pictured on-screen alongside his war-torn country during an epic  Rhythm of My Heart . It was a special moment, and in one of his several costume changes, Stewart even performed in the blue and yellow of Ukraine's flag.

The finale of  Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?  and  Sailing  featured some impressive visuals and brought the Vegas like-spectacle to a fitting conclusion. But it wasn't the first time we'd heard  Sailing  that night.

rod stewart australian tour reviews

Cyndi Lauper

The first came as a brief interlude during  Cyndi Lauper 's inspiring support set. As moving as it was full of spunk, Lauper's punk spirit shone through in a tartan suit and the best dance moves of the night (at 69, she's still got the “she bop").

All the hits were there from  I Drove All Night  to  Time After Time  to  True Colours , but it was the reappropriation of her biggest hit into  Girls Just Want to Have Fundamental Rights  that really stole the show.

Part of an pro-choice trilogy that also included  Sailing  and  Sally's Pigeons , footage of pro-choice rallies were littered across the screen turning an 80s feel-good number into the political statement it always was deep down. This reviewer was admittedly left teary by its power and timeliness in light of Roe v. Wade.

Jon Stevens  made it a trifecta of great acts with huge Vegas-like production, smashing out the hits of Noiseworks and INXS to an ample early turn out (the Arena was as packed as we've seen it since prior to Covid). His tenure in INXS may have been brief, but his version of  Never Tear Us Apart  was simply electric as he called out “God bless you Michael!" at the song's conclusion.

A festival for adults that featured excellent lights and visuals all night, and no acts getting the “support band treatment," it was a raging success by any measure. If it is the last time we see Sir Rod sailing to our shores, we'll remember him, appropriately, as one of the great showmen.

Rod Stewart announces 2023 Australian tour with Cyndi Lauper and Jon Stevens

It comes after he cancelled an Australian tour back in January

Rod Stewart (Jeremy Chan via Getty Images) + Cyndi Lauper (Lester Cohen via Getty Images) + Jon Stevens (Dan Peled via Getty Images)

Rod Stewart has announced an eight-date Australian tour for next March, all dates of which will see him joined by Cyndi Lauper and Jon Stevens .

It’s the fourth time Stewart has slated the run – dubbed ‘The Hits! Tour’ – for Australian audiences; he first announced his return Down Under back in October of 2019, booking it in for the following March. The tour was then postponed to October 2020 on account of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that August, it was moved to the first half of 2022 . At the start of this year, the tour was officially cancelled altogether.

Nevertheless, the new dates will cover all of the cities Stewart had been booked to perform in; the run will kick off in Perth on Saturday March 11, when he, Lauper and Stevens take to the stage at RAC Arena. They’ll head to Melbourne next, playing Rod Laver Arena the following Tuesday (March 14), before moving on to play shows Geelong, Adelaide, Mount Cotton and Sydney. To wrap up, they’ll deliver winery shows in the Hunter Valley and Bowral.

Tickets for all eight of the shows go on sale at 1pm local time this Thursday (November 17), with pre-sales running from 11am tomorrow (November 15). Find tickets here for the shows in Perth, Adelaide and Sydney, and here for everywhere else.

Stewart’s last Australian tour went down in 2015, when he was touring off the back of his 28th album, ‘Time’. He’s since released three more albums: ‘Another Country’ that same year, ‘Blood Red Roses’ in 2018, and ‘The Tears Of Hercules’ in 2021.

Meanwhile, last month saw Stewart rent a home for a family of seven Ukrainian refugees . The veteran pop rocker and his wife, Penny Lancaster, have claimed that they’ll pay the family’s rent and bills for at least a year; in an interview with the Daily Mirror , he said he believes it’s his duty to help others after he was knighted six years ago.

Earlier in the year, he surprised drinkers at a pub in Glasgow by stepping behind the bar to serve pints.

Rod Stewart’s 2023 Australian tour dates are:

MARCH Saturday 11 – Boorloo/Perth, RAC Arena Tuesday 14 – Naarm/Melbourne, Rod Laver Arena Saturday 18 – Djilang/Geelong, Mt Duneed Estate Tuesday 21 – Kaurna/Adelaide, AEC Arena Saturday 25 – Jungalpin/Mount Cotton, Sirromet Wines Wednesday 29 – Warrang/Sydney, Qudos Bank Arena

APRIL Saturday 1 – Wonnarua/Hunter Valley, Roche Estate Sunday 2 – Gundungurra/Bowral, Centennial Vineyards

Rod Stewart & Cyndi Lauper Announce 2023 Australian Tour

Eight massive shows across the country!

rod stewart australian tour reviews

Sir Rod Stewart will return to Australia next year alongside Cyndi Lauper for a string of dates across the country.

The two legends, joined by Noiseworks singer Jon Stevens , will touch down in Perth on March 11, before venturing to Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide, Mount Cotton, Sydney, Hunter Valley and Centennial Vineyards.

It’s been confirmed that Stewart will perform a “massive two-hour set from his vast catalogue of hits”, including tracks from 2021’s The Tears Of Hercules , while Lauper delivers “all of her most loved songs” across an hour set.

Back in January, Stewart was forced to axe his long-awaited return to the country due to “the ongoing surge of Covid in Australia and the reimposition of entertainment venue capacity limits in several states”.

The tour was first announced back in 2019 for October of 2020, but was postponed to March of this year before being cancelled completely.

At the time, he shared: “My dear friends, once again I feel we’ve all been cheated by this evil disease, so it is with great regret that I announce my shows for 2022 have had to be cancelled.

“My thoughts are with all your families at this difficult time as we come out of the joyous and hopefully safe holiday season and I look forward to returning to Australia as soon as the health situation permits.

“I’m absolutely gutted with disappointment and when I do eventually get there we‘ll have the party to end all parties. Guaranteed!

Richard Wilkins catches up with Rod Stewart for exclusive backstage chat

After Rod Stewart had to cancel his Aussie concerts thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the rock legend is finally back Down Under.

Nine entertainment editor Richard Wilkins had the privilege of seeing his friend and talented performer in Melbourne last night and he told Today the show did not disappoint.

"He was in sparkling form last night, putting on a fabulous show and I had the pleasure of catching up with the great man, both backstage and on stage in his inner sanctum," Wilkins said.

While giving Wilkins a tour of the stage set up, Stewart revealed a reason behind his success is how tight-knit he and his band are.

"They're a good bunch of guys, brothers and sisters - We party with each other, go out to dinner, drink together - No shagging though, they're all spoken for," Stewart said with a cheeky grin.

Stewart has performed in Australia multiple times since the early '70s and after three failed attempts to return around the pandemic, he said there was no chance he wouldn't be back.

"This is very special, we haven't been able to come down here since 2017 - we waited a long time for this," he said.

"I wouldn't take their money without putting on a show. You know that, Richard, I'm an old showman."

Following the extraordinary success of his previous tours, Sir Rod Stewart’s 2023 dates promise show-stopping classics and new hits in his unmissable, captivating style. He is one of the best-selling artists in the history of recorded music, with an estimated 250 million records and singles sold worldwide; his performance will include fan favourites from across his impressive career, as well as the first live performances of tracks from his current album THE TEARS OF HERCULES.

Sir Rod Stewart has been lauded as the finest singer of his generation; he’s written several songs that have turned into modern standards, earned many of the industry’s highest awards, among them, two inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the ASCAP Founders Award for songwriting, Grammy™ Living Legend, and is a New York Times bestselling author. In 2016 he was knighted by Prince William at Buckingham Palace for his services to music and charity.

Sir Rod Stewart’s rekindled love of songwriting grows stronger on his 31st studio album, THE TEARS OF HERCULES. It is Stewart’s fourth new album of original songs since 2013 when he reconnected with his songwriting muse to record Time, the chart-topping album which entered the Top 10 in the US and ten countries worldwide, including #1 in the U.K., where it’s been certified double platinum. For his latest, Stewart wrote nine of the album’s 12 songs, including the first single, “One More Time”.

Lauper is a ground-breaking Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Award-winning songwriter and performing artist with global record sales in excess of 50 million. Her iconic voice, influential punk glamor, and infectious live shows have catapulted her to stardom. Lauper won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist with her first album, She’s So Unusual , and became the first woman in history to have four top-five singles from a debut album. Since then, Lauper has released ten additional studio albums, yielding timeless classics like “Time After Time” and “True Colors,” and the anthemic “Girls Just Want To Have Fun.” She has been nominated for 15 Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, seven American Video Awards, and 18 MTV Awards. In 2013, Cyndi Lauper became the first solo woman to win Best Original Score (music and lyrics) for Kinky Boots .

JonStevensis a member of that exclusive club: the Kiwis who are so successful and talented, we claim them as our own!  As front man of Noiseworks, he was part of four Top 10 albums and 12 Top 50 singles, including the classics  No Lies ,  Take Me Back ,  Touch  and  Hot Chilli Woman . He then fronted INXS for more than three years, which included a gig at the Sydney Olympics’ closing ceremony. Stevens grew up listening to Sir Rod Stewart, and his 2011 album  Testify!  included a cover of  Open To Ideas , co-written by Rod Stewart and one of the last songs the Faces recorded.

Hints and tips for improving your chances of getting tickets to Rod Stewart’s 2023 Australian Tour

Make sure you have a my ticketmaster account.

Get the basics covered before tickets go on sale by logging in and checking your Ticketmaster account ahead of time. If you don’t have a Ticketmaster Account then make sure you sign up in advance –  Ticketmaster.com.au .

Sign into your My Ticketmaster account ahead of time

Remember to triple check your passwords, account information, and billing information are all filled in correctly in advance, that way you’re not facing any last-minute account updates when trying to process your order.

Keep your options open with ‘Best Available’

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as you are progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the  Waiting Room  and when you’re being pushed through  the Smart Queue  and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. The queuing system that appears on your screen will place you at the front of the line as soon as possible.

Remember: there are a lot of fans

We’re expecting this to be a very popular event. When a popular event goes on sale there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of customers all attempting to purchase tickets at the same time. Tickets are sold as long as seats are available, and when an act is this popular, sometimes they go very quickly.

Be sure to follow the above tips to ensure you have the best chance of snapping up some tickets.

Rod Stewart, with very special guest Cyndi Lauper, will be bringing their tour to Australia in March 2023.  Tickets are on sale via Ticketmaster.com.au.

Rod Stewart, back to tour the US, talks greatest hits, Jeff Beck and Ukrainian refugees

rod stewart australian tour reviews

The year was 1978, and a musical monster named Disco roamed the land. Rod Stewart had helped pioneer blues rock but decided this beast needed placating.

To this day, 45 years later, “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” remains , along with the lilting “Maggie May,” one of the singer’s signature tunes. You’re sure to hear both when catching Stewart on his expansive U.S. tour, which starts Saturday in Sparks, Nevada, traverses North America and ends with a six-date Las Vegas residency in November.

Does he have any regrets about going disco?

“It’s called jumping on the bandwagon, mate,” Stewart, 78, says with a laugh.

“It’s like my friend Jeff Beck said after he did ‘Hi Ho Silver Lining,’ it’s like a pink lavatory seat hanging around your neck forever,” he says. “Same for me. I didn’t know if I was ashamed of it because the critics hated it. But the public loved it. And that’s what counts.”

Stewart exudes energy in a recent video conversation from his estate in England, prior to a series of British dates preceding his Stateside run.

In a wide-ranging conversation, he tackles topics such as his late bandmate Beck, selling his music catalog and housing Ukrainian refugees.

And then there’s the matter of this reportedly being his last greatest hits tour ever.

“I’m not saying I won’t sing ‘Maggie May’ ever again, but it’ll be the end of the tours that I’ve been doing for a million years,” he says, adding that he is most keen to work on a new swing music album with band leader Jools Holland.

Recently, Stewart posted a clarifying letter to fans on Instagram. “I shall never retire! I was put on this earth to be a singer,” he wrote. “I could never turn my back on the songs that I’ve written and sung over the past six decades. They are like my children.”

Stewart on the hunt for the best home for his back catalog, deals that have netted some rockers millions

Those songs make up a catalog of hits with few rivals. Not just the radio smashes such as “Hot Legs,” but wildly successful covers of great American songbook standards.

Stewart says he’s personally working on finding a home for that collection, a legacy-securing move that recently earned around $500 million for Bruce Springsteen and around as much for Bob Dylan.

“The dollar amount matters but I would be OK with less if I knew it was all being handled right,” he says. “It’s taking a while, and I’m not getting any younger.”

Stewart remains saddened by the loss of Beck, who died at age 78 in January after contracting bacterial meningitis. Stewart’s signature rasp broke out as a staple of The Jeff Beck Group.

“(Rolling Stone's) Ronnie (Wood) and I were talking about him during the recent tribute concert in London, and I told the audience, Ronnie and I might not have been known if it wasn’t for Jeff taking us to the United States and showing us the ropes,” he says. “We owe him a lot.”

Stewart famously had a contentious relationship with Beck later in life, with reunion plans always a subject of heated debate. But the mutual respect remains apparent.

“Me and Woodie weren’t that close to him, he had his demons and could be a bit distant,” he says. “But the love was there. He loved me for my voice, and I love him for his guitar playing. He listened when I sang and reacted. Most guitar players don’t listen.”

Stewart is selling his $70 million Los Angeles home, but he doesn't hate LA

While those old times are never far from his mind, Stewart is also resolutely and excitedly focused on the future. He and his third wife, Penny Lancaster, who he married in 2007, have two children and spend so much time in England now that Stewart has put his Los Angeles mansion on the market for $70 million.

But, Angelenos take note, he does not hate LA.

“Someone said I was selling because I thought LA was toxic, and I never said, that,” he says. “I love LA, and if I don’t get the price I want, I won’t sell it.”

One item that he has moved out of his California home to England is a massive model railroad, some 50 feet by 35 feet complete with a post-war scale model city built in large part by Stewart himself.

“Took me two years to move it, but I work on it every day,” he says. “I wake up, do my emails, work out, then by 10 a.m. I’m in there working on it until I’m needed in the house. A model railroad is never complete.”

Speaking of working out, the famously soccer-crazy Stewart doesn’t hit the pitch as much these days after knee and ankle surgeries, but he still supports the Glasgow, Scotland, squad Celtic, in tribute to his passion for deep Scottish roots on his father’s side.

“I’m so proud of being Scottish,” he says, which explains his latest venture: Joining a group of friends in distributing a new blend of Scottish whiskey he’s called Wolfie’s.

The business venture echoes those of other celebrities, such as Sammy Hagar (tequila and rum) and George Clooney (tequila). “I wasn’t a whiskey drinker before, but this has me very excited,” he says.

Upset by the war in Ukraine, the World War II history buff decided to house refugees

Stewart has found another passion. Helping Ukrainians displaced by the war. In addition to sending his nephews with trucks full of staples to the country’s border, he recently rented out a home in England to house a refugee family, some of whom now work on his grounds. Why?

“Because I remember World War II, and if those pictures of Ukrainian refugees had been in black and white you’d have thought it was 1939,” he says.

That’s why in addition to “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy,” Stewart has added a new staple to his sets, the song “Rhythm of My Heart.” He comes out dressed in Ukrainian colors and puts up photos of refugees and Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“I give him a big salute,” he says. “I hope to make people aware that if Master Putin gets his way, it’s the end of the world as we know it.”

It's a world Stewart has spent more than a half-century filling with song. Like his pals in the Stones, The Who and The Beatles, he is likely to carry on until the final whistle. He said as much in that Instagram post: "I will keep doing this for as long as the good Lord lets me."

Forever young? No. But Rod Stewart is forever youthful in his Phoenix concert

rod stewart australian tour reviews

At 78, Rod Stewart can’t exactly be expected to turn in a vocal performance to rival those from the days of “Maggie May” and “Every Picture Tells a Story.”

But that hardly seemed to matter by the time he kicked that soccer ball into the audience on “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” while bringing a nearly two-hour performance that featured many of the staples that continue to define him to a spirited conclusion Friday, Aug. 4, at Footprint Center in Phoenix.

He may have sung a different melody, the better to avoid the high notes on the back half of the chorus, when he dusted off his classic version of “The First Cut Is the Deepest.” And there is a chance “You Wear it Well,” the night’s first ballad, left some concertgoers wondering if maybe he just wasn’t up to the challenge.

Amazing vocals on 'I'd Rather Go Blind' and 'Have I Told You Lately'

For the most part, though, he sounded great, especially on the gospel-flavored ballad “I’d Rather Go Blind,” a song made popular by Etta James that Stewart said he first heard by the late Christine McVie when she sang for a group called Chicken Shack, pre-Fleetwood Mac.

That deeply soulful vocal was a jaw-dropping reminder that the man has always been one of the more expressive singers in the history of rock 'n' roll. So was the version of “People Get Ready” that he dedicated to the late Jeff Beck, who played guitar on Stewart’s hit recording of that Curtis Mayfield classic.

Other vocal highlights ranged from “Ooh La La,” a Faces song that featured photos of Stewart and his bandmates from the album cover on the screen behind the stage, to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?,” one of many fiddle-driven songs that found him channeling the spirit of his early solo years, and "Have I Told You Lately."

At times, it all came down to Stewart’s phrasing and the character he brings to his performance, from the ‘80s hit “Young Turks” to that joyful rendition of “You’re In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)” and the full-tilt rock ‘n’ roll abandon of the Faces’ “Stay With Me” that Stewart wisely held back for the encore.

His first-topping single "Maggie May," was a bit of train wreck due to some technical difficulties that resulted in his microphone not being turned on when he came out of an instrumental break. He even stopped the song and brought a member of his crew onstage for fans to boo him before starting over. But his vocals sounded great.

Of course, there’s more to a Rod Stewart concert than the actual singing. He’s a charismatic entertainer who knows exactly how to work a crowd.

RIP, legend: Remembering Jack Curtis, the 'patron saint' who shaped the Phoenix rock 'n' roll scene

Forever young? We'll take forever youthful

At 78, forever young may be a lot to ask. But Stewart does appear forever youthful, from the roguish, self-effacing charm with which he spun the yarn of his first sexual encounter (“It was over very, very quickly,” he assured us) to the mic-stand-twirling stage moves and, of course, the kicking of the soccer balls.

And no, it doesn’t hurt that he still looks the part, his shirt unbuttoned nearly to his navel for much of the concert with the confidence it takes to get away with that at Stewart’s age. I can assure you, many people in that building would’ve checked yes in a heartbeat in response to “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?”

He’s still got the moves as well. That much was clear from the opening number, Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love,” which Stewart performed surrounded by the women in his band, who were dressed for the occasion like the women in that classic Palmer video. That was a nice touch.

Speaking of the women in his stellar backing band, who added fiddle, harp – yes, harp! – and mandolin to the proceedings, all while rocking sequined go-go dresses, Stewart’s female backup singers took the spotlight, singing “Lady Marmalade” and “I’m Every Woman,” while he ducked off stage to slip into another outfit.

As he told the crowd at one point, “Fashion comes and goes, but style is classic.”

Dedications to Jeff Beck, Tina Turner, Christine McVie and Ukraine

Those outfits included a blue and gold combo he told us was chosen in honor of the Ukranian flag as he dedicated “Rhythm of My Heart” to the people of Ukraine and president Volodymyr Zelensky. That song was among the emotional highlights of the concert, as anti-war images flooded the video screen.

It was a night of dedications – Zelensky, Beck, McVie and Tina Turner. He revisited the Marvin Gaye-Kim Weston duet he and Turner covered, “It Takes Two,” another chance to shine a spotlight on his backup singers.

There’s been talk that this is Stewart’s final rock ‘n’ roll tour, largely driven by media outlets misrepresenting something Stewart said in clickbait headlines. But there was nothing in Friday’s performance to suggest that we were seeing someone ready to stop singing “Stay With Me” anytime soon.

Here's the trick: How an Arizona legend paved his way to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with a junkyard find

Cheap Trick rocked 'I Want You to Want Me,' 'Surrender' and more

Cheap Trick made Footprint Center feel a little like the Budokan, the Tokyo arena where they famously recorded their iconic breakthrough album, with a crowd-pleasing opening set that welcomed fans to the arena with “Hello There.”

You could teach a master class in how this rock ‘n’ roll thing should be done by repeating everything they did in the course of a raucous performance that touched on such obvious highlights as “Ain’t That a Shame” and “California Man” before powering through the unabashed hit parade that brought things to a rousing finish.

As they were nearing the end of their performance, Robin Zander eased into the ‘80s power ballad that remains their biggest hit, “The Flame,” on acoustic guitar, his bandmates holding off for dramatic effect.

That song touched off a massive singalong, of course, giving way to the power-pop classics “I Want You to Want Me,” “Dream Police,” “Surrender” and “Goodnight Now.”

Robin Zander's vocal were amazing, especially on 'The Flame'

Zander’s vocals were amazing, especially impressive on the high note he held for what seemed like forever on the final chorus of “The Flame.”

Guitarist Rick Nielsen remains a joy to witness, a brilliant guitarist who grabbed the vocal spotlight with gusto on the bridge of “Dream Police.”

And bassist Tom Petersson showed exactly what he brings to the equation quoting Jimi Hendrix in the course of a 12-string bass solo before taking his turn on lead vocals for “I Know What I Want.”

The other member of the classic lineup – drummer Bun E. Carlos – hasn’t toured with Cheap Trick since 2010. But Nielsen’s son Zaxx has really grown into the role on a drums, a point made abundantly clear on the intro to “Ain’t That a Shame.” And Zander’s son, Robin Taylor, did a great job of fleshing things out on guitar and backing vocals, taking his turn on lead vocals for “Downed.”

It was everything a Cheap Trick concert should’ve been in 2023.

The full lineup is listed below, but let’s first take a look at the 10 shows I’m be most excited to see. I’ll run through the list chronologically.

1. Dwight Yoakam (May 17) — I had the chance to see the country troubadour last year, as part of Blue Note Napa’s Summer Session at the Meritage Resort, and he sounded fantastic. His songbook includes some of the genre’s finest tunes of the last 40 years, including “Guitars, Cadillacs” and “A Thousand Miles from Nowhere.”

2. Tanya Tucker (May 21) — Can someone explain to me why it took until 2023 for this legendary performer to get inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame? Seems like “Delta Dawn” alone should’ve secured her passage into the hall at least a decade earlier.

3. Megan Moroney (July 19) — Yes, I’m well aware that my list opens with three straight country music singers. The first two are flat-out icons, while Moroney is one of the most talented and promising new talents to be found in any genre. Her self-assured debut, “Lucky,” was my pick for the best album of 2023. And it’s also the main reason why this show ranks as the one I most want to see at the Mountain Winery in 2024.

4. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit (July 20) — Who doesn’t like Jason Isbell? Judging by the reviews that this Americana artist has gotten from so many of his past albums — which includes last year’s “Weathervanes” — the answer is pretty much nobody.

5. The Australian Pink Floyd Show (Aug. 9) — It’s rare that a tribute act would make one of my top 10 lists, but I’m just so in the mood to hear those epic David Gilmour guitar parts played live. And Mr. Gilmour hasn’t toured the Bay Area since 2006. Sigh.

6. Gary Clark Jr (Aug. 18) — Speaking of cool guitar work, this Austin blues-rocker will surely light up the frets when he visits Saratoga. The four-time Grammy winner is touring in support of his recently released fourth studio album, “JPEG Raw.”

7. Lost 80’s Live (Aug. 31) — Just a really fun lineup, with A Flock of Seagulls, Wang Chung, The English Beat, Missing Persons, The Vapors, The Escape Club, Stacey Q, Animotion, Musical Youth and Dramarama. The best part is the sets tend to be short, so expect the hits and not much else.

8. Air Supply (Sept. 6) — I definitely don’t have to sell this one to the band’s incredibly devoted fans — lovingly dubbed “Airheads” — who will turn out in mass to see Air Supply perform such classic cuts as “Lost in Love,” “All Out of Love,” “The One That You Love” and, best of all, “Making Love Out of Nothing at All.”

9. Three Dog Night & Little River Band (Sept. 7) — The latter has so many awesome songs, but I’d buy a ticket just to hear these first-tier Yacht Rockers play “Cool Change” alone. Toss in Three Dog Night — and the chance to scream along to “Joy to the World” — and this one definitely looks like a winner.

10. Clint Black (Oct. 17) — I opened with country and I’m closing it, especially since Black is touring in celebration of the 35th anniversary of arguably his finest album — the 1989 multi-platinum debut “Killin’ Time.”

Rod Stewart at RAC Arena. w/ Cyndi Lauper, Jon Stevens. Saturday, March 11, 2023.
