AAU Football 7-ON-7 FOOTBALL PASSING LEAGUE GUIDELINES

Why 7-on-7 Football?

The past several years have seen a rapid growth in flag and touch football leagues across the United States, led by the NFL Air-it-Out for adults, NFL Flag for youngsters and others. At the high school level, where nearly 1 million students play contact football, flag and touch have generally become an approved and encouraged activity in the off-season. Organized by school and experienced coaches, the mission is to provide the structure for 8th-12th grade football players, as well as other male and female students, whereby they can develop their skills, competing in the off-season at organized local, regional and nationals events.

7-ON-7 Passing League Guidelines

The 7-on-7 Passing League is a fun competitive, non-contact way to play football. It is all passing, played on a 40-yard field plus end zone, and allows scoring both on the offense and defense. Passing is now the feature offense, and thus defense, of most teams. Passing and catching take a great deal of practice to master. Participating in a 7-on-7 league offers athletes an exceptional, competitive way to hone their skills.

The 1941 Arkansas Travelers Football

December 6, 2021

travel football teams in arkansas

The morning of December 7, 1941, was a typically foggy, drizzly, and uncomfortably chilly morning in the Northwest, but Sgt. John. “Bud” Mobley of the 206 th Coast Artillery was looking forward to a day off and an afternoon football practice. Just after 10 a.m., Mobley took a moment to write in a journal he kept diligently to record his days at Camp Murray, Washington. “On our way to church, but we didn’t make it. The Japanese have bombed Pearl Harbor. WAR!”

The Tacoma newspapers delivered that Sunday had gone to the presses hours before the attack and the sports pages were filled with details of the biggest football game of the fall. The “Khaki Bowl,” scheduled for the following Saturday, would match an undefeated team from Camp Murray called the Arkansas Travelers and a crack outfit from Moffatt Air Base in California. The winner would be the undisputed West Coast Champions.

Despite being 2,000 miles from home, life had been relatively good for the 206th since their July move from Fort Bliss, Texas, to Camp Murray. It had been almost a year since Batteries D and F of the Arkansas National Guard, headquartered at Arkansas Tech in Russellville, Arkansas, had been called to active duty with the 206 th  and subsequently shipped out to Fort Bliss. The young men of the Tech unit were assigned to man anti-aircraft weapons guarding defense bases in the area, and while a major conflict was imminent, they had settled into some sort of normal routine.

The call to active duty of the Tech-based batteries had attracted national attention. Life magazine dispatched a team of writers and photographers to Russellville to cover the historic human interest story. Among the 271 National Guardsmen activated, 104 were Arkansas Tech students. The new soldiers made up a quarter of the school’s male population, including 25 members of the football team.

As might be expected when the Arkansas Tech men got to Washington, they passed their free time doing what they loved and what they did best. It was fall, so naturally, they reorganized their football team, borrowed some hand-me-down equipment, and started practicing.

The fledgling team’s captains from their Tech days were in the unit and they spearheaded the organization of a team. James Rasburry, a tackle from Saline County, and James Keeton the Tech quarterback from the previous college season were natural leaders on and off the field. They had little trouble rounding up the former Tech players and a few 206 th  men with football experience from other Arkansas colleges.

The team had no competition lined up, but they did have their own publicity agent, a talented young sports writer with newspaper experience named Jim Staggs. Staggs was also a Tech student before being called up with the 153 rd  infantry. Before the 206 th  found an opponent, Staggs wrote a laudatory by-line article about the team for the Arkansas Gazette, complete with lineup and player profiles. Staggs ended his piece with the challenge that if the Arkansas men could just find a team to play, they were “Rarin’ to go!”

Among the Tech men in the 206 th  was an outstanding running back named Aubrey “Cob” Fowler and an experienced group of linemen including Morrilton High School teammates, Bud Mobley and Raymond Peters. Fowler was as tough as his nickname might indicate and the former All-State linemen had played together since grade school.

Paul “Mickey” Zuber a former Tech football and track star who had transferred to the University of Arkansas gave the 206 th an experienced pass catcher. Zuber brought along Razorback teammate, Percy Sanders, to anchor the line. Garvin “Peanut” Salmon, a former Wonder Boy and Tennessee Tech star, would join Fowler in a formidable backfield. The Travelers were ready to play some football. Their first opponent would be the 752 nd  Tank Battalion, a local unit with a two-game head start on the Arkansas team.

As the game with the experienced Tankers approached, sportswriters and even the team’s coach, Lt. Bill Ruckman,  gave the Arkansas men little chance. The doubters had obviously overlooked the team’s other coach, 2000 miles away. John E. Tucker was known back home as the “Original Wonder Boy,” for his exploits as a player in the early 20s, but he was also a brilliant coach who had led many of the Travelers to the 1939 Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference Championship. The 206 th  was very much John Tucker’s team although he would never see them play.

In their hand-me-down gear, the country boys from Arkansas didn’t look like an imposing unit, but they would become one of the most storied football teams in Arkansas sports history. “The suits were slightly corny, but the team inside them was a ball of fire.”  – Royal Brougham, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Over the next two months, the 206 th  would become the adopted favorite sons of the west coast military. They dominated seven opponents by a combined score of 279 to 6 and moved from games played before a few friends at Fort Lewis, to highly-publicized events in college stadiums, before thousands of adoring fans.

October 18      Travelers – 28            752 nd  Tank Battalion   – 0 October 24      Travelers – 53            Fort Lewis Medics        – 0 October 29      Travelers – 60           163rd Infantry               – 0 November 5    Travelers – 14            41st Division                  – 0 November 11   Travelers – 13            Fort Stevens                  – 6 November 16   Travelers – 53           Fort Casey                     – 0 November 23  Travelers – 58           103 rd Anti-Tank           – 0

The tragic events of December 7 meant an all-out war effort for the 206 th and thousands of military men and women around the world.  The elaborate plans for the Khaki bowl were canceled, and the football history of the legendary Arkansas Travelers came to an untimely conclusion. The 206 th  would be headed to Dutch Harbor, Alaska, where they would spend the next 3-plus years defending the bitterly cold northern border against Japanese attack.

World War II ended on all fronts by late summer of 1945 and the 206 th  Coastal Artillery would go their separate ways. Bud Mobley and Cob Fowler were discharged in time to rejoin Coach Tucker at Tech in the fall of 1945 and be part of one of the most successful football teams in Wonder Boy History. The 1945 Tech team won 9 games without a loss and gave up a total of 6 points. Both Mobley and Fowler would be named to the All-AIC team.

Raymond Peters returned to Tech the next fall and became one of the most acclaimed linemen in Tech history. After being named All-AIC in 1946, he joined Cob Fowler to finish his career at the University of Arkansas. Jim Staggs returned to a newspaper career and later became the Sports Information Director at Arkansas Tech.

The little team that had to beg uniforms to equip the men has turned out to be the Cinderella Team of the coast. It has put the name Arkansas most favorably on the lips of every football minded fan in the Northwest and brought priceless glory to the regiment.  – Jim Staggs, December 1941

Stars of spring: Five Arkansas football players shining during early-season practices

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas football's spring workouts are in the midst of a one-week break with the school on holiday, which presents a good time to reflect.

Four of the first five practices have been open to the media. Below is a look at five Razorbacks who have shined this spring and could be in line for a big year or a new role in an important year for head coach Sam Pittman.

Jaylon Braxton, cornerback

Braxton was one of the great surprises last season, and it appears he's carried over his good form into his sophomore year.

Over the final two practices before spring break, Braxton recorded three interceptions. He's held up well in the 7-on-7 drills that are tough for defenders, and he's the unquestioned leader of the secondary.

More: Arkansas football coach Sam Pittman pleased with inexperienced linebackers to start spring

"It’s just going to be real exciting to see him grow, but what he does, he makes plays just like the Florida game," Pittman said. "He makes plays. He’s a ballhawk."

Fernando Carmona Jr., left tackle

Carmona transferred in from San Jose State and immediately locked down the starting spot protecting the quarterback's blind side. He's a wall in pass protection and athletic enough to get out in space in the run game.

Carmona also received the respect of his teammates. Defensive end and NFL Draft prospect Landon Jackson said Carmona is one of the best offensive linemen he's ever faced. It remains to be seen if the offensive line can take a major step forward in 2024, but Carmona is the foundational piece Arkansas missed last season.

Tyrone Broden, wide receiver

There are plenty of receivers shining this spring. Davion Dozier had a great second week, and Isaiah Sategna has a knack for big plays. Andrew Armstrong is the leader of the group and is poised for a big season.

But it's Broden who has been quarterback Taylen Green's favorite target, especially in third-down drills. Broden has shown an improved ability to make catches in the middle of the field and is oozing with self-belief after an underwhelming 2023.

"Broden just needed confidence," coach Sam Pittman said. "Now, he was hurt and he kind of got behind a little bit on learning because of his injury. As you’ve seen, he’s very talented and at this point in time, I feel really good about our receiving core."

The wide receivers must be better in 2024, and Broden looks like the top candidate to support Armstrong.

Malachi Singleton, quarterback

Pittman hasn't officially named a starter, but all indications point to Green being under center for the Razorbacks in 2024. Still, Singleton has been a bright spot through spring camp and might be cementing himself as the backup.

Singleton throws a pretty deep ball and connected with Dazmin James for a long touchdown pass during the second practice. His athleticism is also noticeable, with the sophomore making many plays with his legs over the first two weeks.

Jacolby Criswell will still have a say, but for now, Singleton projects as the second-string quarterback.

Matthew Shipley, kicker

Shipley is a Hawaii transfer and has not missed a field goal through the first four practices open to the media. He made a 52-yard kick during two-minute drills last week and appears to be a reliable replacement for Cam Little, who could be an NFL Draft pick in April.

Arkansas 2025 Football Schedule: List of Razorbacks Opponents 2 Years Out

T he 2024 season has yet to exit spring football, but sports news waits for no one. With the SEC maintaining its eight-conference-game format through the next two years, Arkansas’ 2025 schedule has been revealed.

List 2025 Arkansas Razorbacks Opponents

With the league expanding to 16 teams in 2024, the Razorbacks have their work cut out for them. Sam Pittman’s squad has seen their record worsen in each of the last three years, and his seat is beginning to warm.

As Arkansas begins preparations for the 2024 season, here’s who they’ll face in 2025:

vs. Auburn Tigers

Date & time TBA

vs. Missouri Tigers

vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs

at Ole Miss Rebels

at Texas Longhorns

at Texas A&M Aggies

at Tennessee Volunteers

at LSU Tigers

The Razorbacks will face all but one of those teams this year: Tennessee. Playing in Knoxville is no easy feat, especially with Josh Heupel and Co. in town. Arkansas will also have to wait until at least 2026 to face Oklahoma in the regular season, as they aren’t slated to play them this year either.

However, they will introduce themselves to Texas this season and get a second helping in 2025. With the Longhorns attempting to get back to the national championship in 2024, Arkansas will have a chance to play spoiler in Week 12.
