Welcome to the West
Here legends larger-than-life loom over landscapes sculpted in sand. Rivers tunnel through time leaving cavernous canyons in their wake. Geysers steam like clockwork precision and rocks balance, arch and bridge in whimsical formations. Go west with Tauck and you'll find evergreen giants, painted deserts, pink-hued stone citadels as you ride with cowboys, hike with naturalists and raft with guides passionate about the places they roam.
Yellowstone national park, seriously... there's no other place on earth like it – yellowstone national park.
There's everything else, and then there's Yellowstone; it's truly like no other place on Earth. Why? Because it sits atop the largest "supervolcano" on the North American continent – one of the hottest spots on the planet. It's called the Yellowstone Caldera, and it lurks beneath the surface, giving rise to Yellowstone National Park's host of gushing geysers, steaming fumaroles, hot springs, mud pot and more – nothing less than the largest concentration of geothermal features on Earth, spectacular in winter or summer. In an amazing setting such as this, pretty much anything you do – from a wildlife safari in the summer, to a snowcoach ride in the winter… or hike, climb, horseback ride, ski, snowshoe, watch a sunrise or a sunset – is something you'll never forget.
Yosemite National Park
Through a lens, brightly and darkly – yosemite national park.
What a young Ansel Adams saw through his lens as he trekked into the California wilderness more than 100 years ago – as John Muir did a half-century before him – has inspired countless visitors to explore its chiseled landscapes. Celestial bodies trump electricity. Running water falls from rocks. Residents are furred, finned or feathered. And skyscrapers with names like Half Dome and El Capitan are nature-made. Adams iconic photographs need no words or explanation. Even in black and white, they capture what he felt about places now immortalized for future generations.
Grand Teton National Park
Big sky, big mountains, big picture... grand teton national park.
Out here in the Great American West, everything is "big." For starters, Wyoming comprises part of "Big Sky Country"... where the heavens ranging above the region's vast grasslands, winding rivers and jagged mountain peaks do indeed appear to stretch on forever and ever. Then there are the mountains themselves – in this case the Tetons, crowned by Grand Teton (that's the "big" one that gives the national park its name; other peaks in the range include Middle Teton, South Teton, Mount Owen and Teewinot) – seemingly bursting right up out of the floor of the glacial valley we call Jackson Hole, to loom majestically over everything below.
Grand Canyon National Park
Coming to grips with the impossible... at grand canyon national park.
Surely you have stumbled upon some other planet... or at least it feels that way at Grand Canyon National Park. Your first glimpse of the enormous Grand Canyon strains credulity. What giants have been playing with the rock here? Or what cataclysmic force of the universe? Then the drama starts. Clouds, shadows, and the shifting sun keep transforming the landscape. As the sun flames in the west, canyon walls turn red while the giants paint the sky, creating masterpieces so beautiful they freeze you in your tracks. The Grand Canyon sprawls wide open, carved out by the Colorado River, revealing two billion years of Earth's history; here is where air meets land, where you meet what feels like destiny, with just the white-tailed Kaibab squirrel, only found here, as witness.

Discover America on the EPIC ROAD TRIP!
2025 enrollment open now secure your spot on the bus.
Since 1964, the Grand Western Tour has been leading 9th & 10th grade students on an unforgettable five-week epic adventure across the United States. On the trip they create countless memories and make lifelong friendships along the way. The 10,000 mile journey through America gives students a picturesque, historical and fun-filled glimpse of some of the most iconic landmarks and cities in the country, all while having the time of their lives and making 50 new best friends in the process.
Tour Highlights
Check out a few of the adventures in store along the Grand Western Tour!
The Grand Western Tour allowed me to experience the states in a way that no other program possibly could. The friends I made that summer are lifelong and if I could relive the journey again, I would hop on the bus in a heartbeat.
Hop aboard the cross-country road trip of a lifetime!
From North Carolina to California and everything in between, the Grand Western Tour visits 18 states and more than 22 cities across the country.
Since the first moment I sat on the bus, I realized just how much more there is to see in this world. For five weeks, I had the United States in the palm of my hand. That summer, my view of the country and world grew so massively that I now study International Politics and cannot wait to see every plot of land or ocean view that I am offered. In five short weeks, 51 perfect strangers became my best friends and impacted my life in every way possible. I am so grateful for the Grand Western Tour.

The Wild West in the Moscow region
Editor - Stakheev Vladimir, photos - Nikolay Korolyoff, music - FJGI 'Riding A Horse'
These were once stables at a monastery that were completely abandoned after the Revolution of 1917. They were recently privatized, repaired, and remodeled in a classic Western style.
You can reach the ranch from Moscow by taking a regional commuter train from Belorussky Train Station to Gorod Mozhaysk Station, then, an approximately $3 taxi ride to the ranch. You can also get there by car along the Minskoye High way to the city of Mozhaysk .
The ranch has more than 50 horses. They've all been trained to carry tourists. You can arrange in advance to go on a horseback tour or sign up to learn how to ride. All of the employees are dressed in a Wild West style. According to one of the "cowboys", Evgeny Yaikin—or as they call him at the ranch, Wild Shot—“Working here is like going back to childhood, when we liked to play ‘Cowboys and Indians’.”
The ranch was created as a club for amateur riders. It's not just a tourist site. It's an advertisement for horse-based sports. The guys who work at the ranch are professional trainers. The ranch is open around the year. In the winter, you can go on an authentic Russian hunting expedition complete with hounds. In addition to that, everybody is dressed in a 19th-century style.
A two-hour horseback tour will cost about $50, but it's better to bring rubles in cash.
American themes are extremely popular in Russia. That's because most Russians grew up in the 1970-1980s, read a lot of Mark Twain and O. Henry, played 'Cowboys and Indians', watched Hollywood movies, and listened to rock-and-roll. That was passed on to their children. That’s why places like this ranch are in high-demand in Russia.

Day trip to Suzdal from Moscow: transport, sights, maps and tips
DAY TRIP TO SUZDAL
Suzdal is one of the most popular destinations on the Golden Ring and the whole city is often described as an open-air museum. The city has no railway station and practically no heavy industry, meaning that is has preserved its provincial charm and a great deal of architectural monuments.
From Moscow, Suzdal is not as easy to get to as Sergiev Posad (the closest Golden Ring city to the capital) but it is worth going the extra distance as Suzdal provides more of a contrast from Moscow. If you make use of high-speed trains it is possible and not too demanding to visit for even just a day, but of course spending the night there is recommended to soak in the atmosphere or to combine it with a visit to neighbouring Vladimir. As the city is a very popular tourist destination you will have no problem finding a cafe or guesthouse there. There is practically no public transport in the city, but the city is small and most sights are located relatively close to each other.
Getting There and Back
Via Vladimir
Direct to Suzdal
Buses directly to Suzdal leave from Moscow’s Schyolkovsky Bus Station. There are about 9 buses a day and it takes around 4½ hours depending on traffic. The buses stop at Vladimir too. Using this option will mean a rather exhausting day trip.
Orientation and Main Sights
Suzdal is a relatively small city and it is not difficult to walk around the city to see most of the sights.
The main road in the city is Ulitsa Lenina which runs north across the whole city.
The main sights of Suzdal are located either on or just off this road, including the two main sights: the Suzdal Kremlin in the south and the Spaso-Yevfimiev Monastery in the north.
More information about Suzdal can be found on our Suzdal pages.
Suzdal is famous for its medovukha (mead) which is an alcoholic drink made out of honey. It can be drunk either hot or cold, meaning it perfect in both summer and winter, and you will find it on practically every menu in the city. There are various flavours of the drink available and even a non-alcoholic version. In addition to medovukha, you can find all traditional Russian souvenirs in the city and there is a big souvenir market on Torgovaya Ploschad.

The Gallery is named after Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov, Moscow merchant and patron of arts, and it’s been bearing his name with proud and gratitude for over a hundred years. In 1856 Tretyakov started his collection by acquiring two works by Russian artists, "Skirmish with Finnish Smugglers" by V.G. Khudyakov and "The Temptation" by N. G. Schilder.

Kyle Rittenhouse visit: Western Kentucky University braces for 'watershed moment'
Kyle Rittenhouse’s story is a Rorschach test for this generation — you see what you want to see.
His supporters will tell you the then-teen acted within his rights in 2020 when he brought a gun to a protest following a police shooting in Wisconsin and will point out he was acquitted after he shot three people who attacked him, killing two. His opposition, meanwhile, will say his presence alone caused the chaos that night and he’s spent years since cashing in on infamy.
Both sides will be in the Bluegrass State this week. Rittenhouse is scheduled to speak Wednesday evening at Western Kentucky University in an event sponsored by the school's Turning Point USA chapter. It's the latest stop on a high-profile tour across the region that has drawn significant backlash.
WKU Police Chief Mitchell Walker knows what’s coming. He has seen the footage from Rittenhouse’s stop last week at the University of Memphis — the speaker was drowned out by protesters during a brief speech at a campus hall, with some heated confrontations after the event ended.
"It is a concern. We're hoping that it (won't) be like that here at WKU," Walker said Friday. "We're hoping it'll be more peaceful than that, so we're just trying to make sure we have enough folks in place ... to make sure that tempers don't flare."
WKU Police will be on hand, he said, along with Kentucky State Police, Bowling Green Police and officials from the Warren County Sheriff's Office. They're hoping for a peaceful night, Walker said, but it's hard to guess how many people will attend.
The event will begin at 7 p.m. inside WKU's Downing Student Union in a room with a cap of about 120 people. Tickets are free, Turning Point USA WKU President Cade Holcombe said, but entry inside will be on a first-come basis — and with protests planned, the crowd at the building at the center of campus could spill outside.
"I wouldn't say it concerns me, I wouldn't say that. I'd say I'm prepared for something like that to happen," Holcombe said. "We've worked with WKUPD and security teams and whatnot to make sure everybody is safe and everyone in the crowd remains respectful and peaceful."
Holcombe, the lone Bowling Green Republican who responded to a request for comment for this story, isn't a Rittenhouse fanatic. "I don't condone his actions (during the shooting). I don't know why he would have been there in the first place. Personally, I wouldn't have gone, I would have stayed in my house."
But, he helped coordinate the event when Turning Point USA approached his branch about the potential speaking engagement. He said it's because he believes in free speech and "everyone deserves a platform."
"I'm honestly curious of what he has to say and I think he can he can start a good conversation between the students of Western Kentucky," Holcombe said. "Hopefully we can get somewhere and find a solid middle ground."
University officials cited free speech when asked about the event. The school is not sponsoring the event, WKU said in a statement provided by spokesperson Jace Lux, and the space was reserved by a student group through the same process other organizations use.
"While WKU’s commitment to free speech includes allowing groups to invite guests to campus, that does not mean that the university supports, endorses or agrees with the views of those individuals," the statement said.
Holcombe said he doesn't know what Rittenhouse will cover when he speaks, though a Turning Point USA page promoting the event and tickets said the speaker will cover "the importance of the Second Amendment and the lies of (Black Lives Matter)."
Ryan Dearborne, president of the Bowling Green / Warren County NAACP , has read that description. He understands the university's position in allowing the student group to host the event, but in his view, it doesn't sound like Rittenhouse is coming to campus with a message that will bring people together. His organization condemned the event last week.
"The essence of divisive rhetoric is what he's going to speak about," Dearborne told The Courier Journal. "I was just saddened and disgusted that a group would think that he would be a good person to bring to campus.
"There are a majority of students that don't want him on campus, and it's not politically driven. It's simply because they don't want a person like that on their campus spewing rhetoric that is dangerous and divisive," Dearborne said.
The local NAACP branch isn't sponsoring a protest, Dearborne said, but they'll support groups who are. One such organization is the Bowling Green Freedom Walkers, a social justice advocacy group planning a demonstration during Rittenhouse's speech .
Terry Smith won’t be there in person, but his efforts to stifle the event from afar illustrate the opposition organizers are facing.
Smith lives in Lexington but attended WKU in the early 2000s. The self-described “very progressive” University of Kentucky Hospital employee started a change.org petition against the event in mid-March when he heard Rittenhouse was planning to speak in Bowling Green — it landed more than 1,000 signatures in less than a week.
Rittenhouse isn't an academic with a message that will cause students to think, Smith said. He's someone who gained fame from a "questionable act and acquittal" who's on a "victory tour" speaking to like-minded audiences.
“It’s just more of the same from the extreme right, pushing things in our face that they’ve gotten away with,” Smith said. “… He has zero experience. He’s 21 now. He has nothing to say about any of this, and it’s being pushed as a political point.”
Dearborne, a 40-year-old man who's been with the NAACP for 16 years, drew a straight line from Rittenhouse's scheduled event to the 2024 General Assembly.
Republican lawmakers are likely to vote soon on measures that would curb diversity, equity and inclusion efforts at public universities across the state. Students planning to protest Wednesday are paying attention to what's happening in the legislature, he said, and deserve support.
"This is a watershed moment for a lot of these young people," he said. "We talk a lot about race and DEI, especially going on right now with the bills in Frankfort. This is the chance for them to see it upfront and how stuff like this affects them — how somebody who is their age, roughly, can come onto campus and cause a commotion with the things he will say."
Holcombe will listen Wednesday night, and he won't be alone. Disagreements between attendees and protesters are inevitable, he said, but he hopes both sides remain civil.
"Obviously, sometimes people get a little out of hand and that's not what we're looking for," he said. "You know, "I'm just hoping that people can come with an open mind and listen to him and be listened to."

2024 NCAA Tournament scores, schedule: March Madness bracket, game dates, tipoff times, TV channels, locations
Check out the master schedule for the ncaa tournament so you can watch all the march madness 2024 action.
The 2024 NCAA Tournament continues Thursday with four Sweet 16 games — two in the East Region in Boston, two more in the West Region in Los Angeles. And the top two seeds in both regions remain alive. So we could be headed for an amazing weekend of basketball.
Thursday's Game of the Day?
That's probably North Carolina vs. Alabama — a No. 1 vs. No. 4 game in the West Region inside crytpo.com Arena. The Tar Heels, led by All-American guard RJ Davis, made the Sweet 16 for the second time in a three-year span by beating Wagner and Michigan State by double-digits. The Crimson Tide, led by All-American guard Mark Sears, made the Sweet 16 for the third time in a four-year span by beating Charleston and Grand Canyon by double-digits.
Thursday's tip is set for 9:39 p.m. ET on CBS.
The only game on Thursday between two top-three seeds is Iowa State-Illinois. The Cyclones are the No. 2 seed in the East. The Illini are the No. 3 seed in the East. Iowa State opened a 2.5-point favorite. If the Cyclones win, they'll then be just one more victory away from advancing to the Final Four for the first time since 1944.
