Journey of Love 18+ review: A few hilarious moments and an engaging screenplay make this Naslen flick a decent one-time watch

Despite its familiar template, Naslen and Meenakshi's Journey of Love 18+ succeeds in becoming a light-hearted comedy

  • Raymond John

Last Updated: 10.57 PM, Jul 07, 2023

Story: Akhil, a polytechnic dropout and ardent supporter of the communist party, falls in love with Athira, daughter of a prominent Left political leader around that area. However their relationship faces opposition from Athira's family, trying to expatriate her. Determined to be together, Akhil and Athira decide to elope and get married with the help of Rajesh, who also has a history of eloping. The couple's plan is further complicated by the fact that they live in a village dominated by the party of Athira's father. With the assistance of his friends, Akhil embarks on a mission to marry Athira with numerous challenges on his path.

Naslen and Meenakshi in a still from Journey of Love 18+

Review: Director Arun D Jose, of Jo and Jo fame, once again delves into the world of adolescent minds with his latest film Journey of Love 18+. While the movie maintains a light humorous tone throughout, it deals with certain serious elements like teenage love, politics, caste and elopement. Similar to his previous film, 18+ has subtle political commentary while evolving as a fun comedy-drama.

The film focuses on early love marriages, which is often viewed as unwise by conventional society. Despite following a familiar template, with the story of two youngsters from different family backgrounds falling in love and being discouraged by their families, the director succeeds in crafting the film in an engaging way.

Mathew Thomas and Naslen in a still from Journey of Love 18+

Along with the characters, the political atmosphere of the area where they are placed is also consequential in this film. Set in North Kerala, the film highlights the influence of political parties in the daily lives of the people in the area. We can see flags and slogans of a Left party in most of its scenes. Despite its ideologies being against conventional establishments, it doesn't support Akhil and Athira's relationship.

In Jo and Jo, Arun dealt with the anxieties and confusions in the minds of youngsters during their adolescent phase and their relationships. But in 18+, the story is about how the actions and decisions of the two youngsters have an impact on the larger society.

image_item

The first half of the movie is slightly better than the latter, but the climax deserves applause as the makers chose not to appease a particular group of audience. Most of the dialogues that were intended to evoke humour work well and the actors play a huge part in making this film a fun ride. In fact, the performances save the film whenever the script has nothing new up its sleeve. Naslen, in his first outing as a solo lead, does justice to his role. Mathew, who plays a young hardcore Party acolyte, gets to carry a serious face throughout the movie, unlike his usual naivete. Though Naslen and Mathew don't share a lot of screen space, they do have a few memorable moments

The female lead Meenakshi plays her role exceptionally well, with the court scenes in the end being the standout. Safvan and Anshid, known for their content on social media content, seamlessly essay their characters that seem tailor made for them. Binu Pappu, Nikhila Vimal and Manoj KU were convincing and the part played by Rajesh Madhavan was also entertaining.

Songs by Christo Xavier sync well with the movie, which has decent visuals by Satheesh Kurup and crisp edits by Chaman Chakko.

Verdict: Journey of Love 18+ makes for a good one-time watch, thanks to its good performances and humour.

Journey of Love 18+ review: Plenty to laugh and think about

Princy Alexander

Love and politics form the core of Arun D Jose's new film 'Journey of Love 18+', which released in theatres on Friday. The movie, like his previous outing 'Jo and Jo', has a generous mix of humour, some of which is truly enjoyable, though it sometimes falls short of the hilarity in 'Jo and Jo', that was a simpler tale of sibling quarrels.

Though the treatment remains the same, 18+ essentially tries to go a little more deeper by exploring the risks of attempting to tie the knot when one is too young. Akhil (Naslen) is a Left-wing worker who is in love with the local secretary Raveendran (Manoj K U)'s daughter. Their marriage is a strict no-no since Akhil's family members were Raveendran's labourers.

Since a proper marriage is out of question, Akhil along with his cronies devise a plan for him to run away with his lover. What happens next forms the crux of the story. The makers have thrown in some interesting dialogues, party politics and small twists, which ensures the movie is engrossing.

'Chattambi': Sreenath Bhasi shines in this slow, yet engrossing film | Movie review

The events in the first half are clearly more exciting than those in the second half, which do not keep pace with the scenes prior to the interval.

The post-marriage scenario felt like it was stretched a little too long.

The court scene, however, was a perfect balance of humour and realism, giving the viewers much to think about. There are no loud arguments, nor any heart-rending scenarios. In fact, the lawyers hardly make any arguments, yet the scenes make sense. Kudos to Arun and his team for trying to bring up an interesting matter in court.

Though Nikhila Vimal only has a guest appearance, it definitely adds to the humour. The makers have given Mathew Thomas an interesting entry and exit in the film. He does not have the usual combo scenes with Naslen, which is a refreshing change.

Manoj as the local secretary and a father to a grown-up daughter leaves an impression on the audience. Meenakshi Dhinesh, who has previously worked in films like 'Porinju Mariyam Jose' and 'Iratta', also delivers a good performance as Akhil's girlfriend. The two share a good chemistry onscreen. YouTuber Saaf Bros, who is known for his unique content, nails his role as one of Akhil's friends.

Overall, the film has a good, youthful vibe. However, it is not as free-flowing as it's predecessors of the same genre, like 'Thanneer Mathan Dinangal', among others.

The inclusion of a lot of "enak , anak , oal , oan , naaye " and rest of the words and lines are in avark thoniya slang.

A rom-com without any rom and com.

The film lost me by the 30 minute mark and whatever followed was boring as hell . Whatever they said in the form of comedy was dry af and made me go like "ugh, ayye". Shokam aayirunnu motham. The last half an hour of this movie is so bizzare and makes you go like "what the hell ". Well idk the rules in 2009 so can't fact check what happened. Ee kaalam aayirunnu enkil Avan jail kidannene.

Forgot to add that some of the music…

An engaging slice-of-life comedy that takes some dig at a ever-relevant socio-political hypocrisy. Could’ve done without that spoon-feeding bit in the end, but that’s all right. Naslen and the entire supporting cast has done a good job. It’s fun while it lasts.

Slightly better than Jo and Jo and might be the best one that came out in the Nalsen-Mathew combination( Mathew is hardly in the movie…hehe) in the recent past.

Savarana Communist okke..chirichupoyi Pulli aah kavitha okke paranyapo…

Some 1-2 jokes worked…but ya it’s just the same old-ass story that we have seen A10, then Jayaram, then Dileep, then Kunchako Boban, then Asif ali, then Fahad Fazil, then Shane Nigam do.

Also what was the point of placing the story in the 2000s? It that the trend now? 🙄

Jo And Jo Director's Next

The film is about love during school days and the subsequent escapism. This is a film directed by Arun D Jose, who directed the film Jo and Jo.

The trailer hinted that it is a romantic comedy entertainer. Meenakshi Dinesh is the heroine. Binu Pappu, Rajesh Madhavan, Manoj KU, Shyam Mohan, Kumar Sunil, Babu Annoor and Nikhila Vimal are playing the prominent roles. The film belongs to drama genre.

#JourneyofLove18 + A simple storyline with a neat screenplay, fairly engaging, good casting ❤️ dark comedies worked well 😂 An enjoyable ride from start to end, felt bit lengthy towards end of movie😅 Overall a good entertaining movie 👍 Rating : 3.5/5 pic.twitter.com/WjrDuP7ON6 — SmartBarani (@SmartBarani) July 7, 2023

Naslen Is Another Key Factor

Anyone who watched the movie Thanneer Mathan Dinangal will never forget the role of Melvin in it. Everyone has a friend like that chunky fellow who joins the protagonist Jane in every misadventure. Naslen is an actor who became a favorite of the Malayalee audience with the role of that plus-two boy in Thanneer Mathan. Later, this young actor is active in Malayalam cinema by playing small and big roles in many films.

#18Plus : Journey of Love- a story about elope and friendship.. A decent first half followed by a slightly underwhelming second half and a neat ending.. some comedies here and there.. Naslen was good, while Mathews had limited screen time, and the rest of the cast delivered neat… — AB George (@AbGeorge_) July 7, 2023

In a recent interview, Naslen said that director Sathyan Anthikkad mentioned that he has a bright future as a blessing. Naslen said that working with Sathyan Anthikad was an unforgettable experience.

Watched #18Plus Decent 1st half followed by a below average 2nd half which is too much stretched and predictable. Naslen delivered a good performance. Felt like they used Mathew only for the promotion purpose. Very less comedies compared to Jo&Jo. 2.75/5 AVERAGE #JourneyofLove18 + pic.twitter.com/t2HBgsI0G4 — Aditya Binu (@aditya_binu) July 7, 2023

'A Journey' Review: Netflix's Filipino film leaves you teary-eyed with profound emotions

MANILA, PHILIPPINES: 'A Journey', now streaming on Netflix , takes viewers on a poignant two-hour exploration of profound emotions.

It revolves around a young woman, Shane, whose cancer returns for the second time and she chooses to opt out of undergoing chemotherapy again.

Instead, she convinces her husband, Bryan, to help her check off the adventures on her bucket list. Accompanied by their close friend, Kristoff, the trio sets off on an unforgettable adventure to Tasmania.

Netflix's 'A Journey' is an emotional one

A still from 'A Journey' (@netflix)

The film delivers a deeply emotional experience, evoking tears as it portrays Shane and Bryan's heartfelt journey through the diagnosis of the deadly disease.

Despite the expected emotional moments, the film also celebrates love and enduring friendships.

It's central philosophy- "survival is not the same as living" is beautiful portrayed, emphasizing the idea that one never knows what may happen tomorrow.

There have been plenty of films made in the past with similar themes, but the portrayal of deep, sentimental human emotions can never become worn out in cinema. In fact, they are the heart of cinema, depicted across all genres.

'A Journey' doesn't bore you with monotony

Paolo Contis, Patrick Garcia and Kaye Abad in 'A Journey' (@netflix)

The plot of the film is quite familiar and has been depicted in several films across continents.

Fortunately, RC Delos Reyes does a brilliant job of not lingering on emotional moments but maintains a steady pace, ensuring the audience remains engaged and invested in the story.

The close, fun relationship shared between the trio provides a heartfelt relief from the heavily loaded emotions of pain and grief.

Paolo Contis, Patrick Garcia and Kaye Abad share a wholesome chemistry and are quite convincing in their respective parts.

'A Journey' makes a worthwhile watch for a relaxed weekend, alone or with loved ones. Just be prepared with tissues handy for this touching ride.

‘A Journey’ Review – A Beautiful Yet Tragic Tale Of Death, Life, And Love

'A Journey' Review - A Beautiful Yet Tragic Tale Of Death, Life, And Love

A Journey is a heartwrenching Filipino drama about a woman with cancer setting out to complete her bucket list together with her husband and childhood friend. It’s a beautiful and compelling piece of filmmaking about what truly matters.

I must warn you though, this film will make you very sad.

A Journey opens with cancer survivor Shane, her husband Bryan, and their best friend Kristoff, aka Tupe, celebrating her 39th birthday at a karaoke bar. Kristoff is a famous television actor and Bryan works as his manager while Shane runs a coffee shop. The three have been friends since childhood, while Bryan and Shane have been in love for just as long.

Not long after her birthday, Shane notices some worrying symptoms and goes to her oncologist. The news is devastating, Shane’s cancer has returned. After having suffered through chemo once before, Shane doesn’t want treatment this time. Instead, she wants to spend whatever time she has left getting through her “magic list” with Bryan and Tupe’s help. The list includes some fun items like seeing penguins, going snorkeling, and recreating her first date with Bryan, but also emotionally heavy goals like reconnecting with her estranged father.

'A Journey' Review - A Beautiful Yet Tragic Tale Of Death, Life, And Love

A Journey (via Netflix)

A Journey is a heartfelt drama exploring themes of love, friendship, and the things that matter when faced with mortality. It may start with a bad karaoke scene, but this isn’t a feel-good romance where everything is honky dory in the end. The film offers an honest (and depressing) exploration of the often tragic reality of the human condition.

A devastated Bryan seems to accept his wife’s decision and even quits his job to spend time with her. He does, however, have an ulterior motive as he’s hoping Shane will agree to start her cancer treatments once the magic list is complete. Wanting to help, Tupe organizes an all-expenses paid trip to Tasmania for the trio. Shane is apprehensive about allowing her friend to pay for such an expensive trip, but she eventually relents.

A Journey | Image via Netflix

As lighthearted as the trio tries to be during their trip, the finality of their actions is never far from our minds. One compelling scene is where Tupe and Bryan debate whether life is about the journey or the destination. For Tupe, it’s about the destination, but Bryan sees the journey as more important. Shane, however, is acutely aware of how important each moment is and wants to spend her time making the most of it.

The premise of a cancer patient choosing to live to the fullest in their final months has been done before, most notably in the 2007 tearjerker The Bucket List starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. However, a movie doesn’t need to have a never-before-seen synopsis to be good. And that’s precisely what A Journey is. It’s a touching story about three childhood friends finding meaning in their lives in the face of devastating adversity.

I also broke down A Journey’s ending if you wanted some emotional support after that crushing climax.

‘Civil War’ Review: We Have Met the Enemy and It Is Us. Again.

In Alex Garland’s tough new movie, a group of journalists led by Kirsten Dunst, as a photographer, travels a United States at war with itself.

‘Civil War’ | Anatomy of a Scene

The writer and director alex garland narrates a sequence from his film..

“My name is Alex Garland and I’m the writer director of ‘Civil War’. So this particular clip is roughly around the halfway point of the movie and it’s these four journalists and they’re trying to get, in a very circuitous route, from New York to DC, and encountering various obstacles on the way. And this is one of those obstacles. What they find themselves stuck in is a battle between two snipers. And they are close to one of the snipers and the other sniper is somewhere unseen, but presumably in a large house that sits over a field and a hill. It’s a surrealist exchange and it’s surrounded by some very surrealist imagery, which is they’re, in broad daylight in broad sunshine, there’s no indication that we’re anywhere near winter in the filming. In fact, you can kind of tell it’s summer. But they’re surrounded by Christmas decorations. And in some ways, the Christmas decorations speak of a country, which is in disrepair, however silly it sounds. If you haven’t put away your Christmas decorations, clearly something isn’t going right.” “What’s going on?” “Someone in that house, they’re stuck. We’re stuck.” “And there’s a bit of imagery. It felt like it hit the right note. But the interesting thing about that imagery was that it was not production designed. We didn’t create it. We actually literally found it. We were driving along and we saw all of these Christmas decorations, basically exactly as they are in the film. They were about 100 yards away, just piled up by the side of the road. And it turned out, it was a guy who’d put on a winter wonderland festival. People had not dug his winter wonderland festival, and he’d gone bankrupt. And he had decided just to leave everything just strewn around on a farmer’s field, who was then absolutely furious. So in a way, there’s a loose parallel, which is the same implication that exists within the film exists within real life.” “You don’t understand a word I say. Yo. What’s over there in that house?” “Someone shooting.” “It’s to do with the fact that when things get extreme, the reasons why things got extreme no longer become relevant and the knife edge of the problem is all that really remains relevant. So it doesn’t actually matter, as it were, in this context, what side they’re fighting for or what the other person’s fighting for. It’s just reduced to a survival.”

By Manohla Dargis

A blunt, gut-twisting work of speculative fiction, “Civil War” opens with the United States at war with itself — literally, not just rhetorically. In Washington, D.C., the president is holed up in the White House; in a spookily depopulated New York, desperate people wait for water rations. It’s the near-future, and rooftop snipers, suicide bombers and wild-eyed randos are in the fight while an opposition faction with a two-star flag called the Western Forces, comprising Texas and California — as I said, this is speculative fiction — is leading the charge against what remains of the federal government. If you’re feeling triggered, you aren’t alone.

It’s mourning again in America, and it’s mesmerizingly, horribly gripping. Filled with bullets, consuming fires and terrific actors like Kirsten Dunst running for cover, the movie is a what-if nightmare stoked by memories of Jan. 6. As in what if the visions of some rioters had been realized, what if the nation was again broken by Civil War, what if the democratic experiment called America had come undone? If that sounds harrowing, you’re right. It’s one thing when a movie taps into childish fears with monsters under the bed; you’re eager to see what happens because you know how it will end (until the sequel). Adult fears are another matter.

In “Civil War,” the British filmmaker Alex Garland explores the unbearable if not the unthinkable, something he likes to do. A pop cultural savant, he made a splashy zeitgeist-ready debut with his 1996 best seller “The Beach,” a novel about a paradise that proves deadly, an evergreen metaphor for life and the basis for a silly film . That things in the world are not what they seem, and are often far worse, is a theme that Garland has continued pursuing in other dark fantasies, first as a screenwriter (“ 28 Days Later ”), and then as a writer-director (“ Ex Machina ”). His résumé is populated with zombies, clones and aliens, though reliably it is his outwardly ordinary characters you need to keep a closer watch on.

By the time “Civil War” opens, the fight has been raging for an undisclosed period yet long enough to have hollowed out cities and people’s faces alike. It’s unclear as to why the war started or who fired the first shot. Garland does scatter some hints; in one ugly scene, a militia type played by a jolting, scarily effective Jesse Plemons asks captives “what kind of American” they are. Yet whatever divisions preceded the conflict are left to your imagination, at least partly because Garland assumes you’ve been paying attention to recent events. Instead, he presents an outwardly and largely post-ideological landscape in which debates over policies, politics and American exceptionalism have been rendered moot by war.

The Culture Desk Poster

‘Civil War’ Is Designed to Disturb You

A woman with a bulletproof vest that says “Press” stands in a smoky city street.

One thing that remains familiar amid these ruins is the movie’s old-fashioned faith in journalism. Dunst, who’s sensational, plays Lee, a war photographer who works for Reuters alongside her friend, a reporter, Joel (the charismatic Wagner Moura). They’re in New York when you meet them, milling through a crowd anxiously waiting for water rations next to a protected tanker. It’s a fraught scene; the restless crowd is edging into mob panic, and Lee, camera in hand, is on high alert. As Garland’s own camera and Joel skitter about, Lee carves a path through the chaos, as if she knows exactly where she needs to be — and then a bomb goes off. By the time it does, an aspiring photojournalist, Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), is also in the mix.

The streamlined, insistently intimate story takes shape once Lee, Joel, Jessie and a veteran reporter, Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), pile into a van and head to Washington. Joel and Lee are hoping to interview the president (Nick Offerman), and Sammy and Jessie are riding along largely so that Garland can make the trip more interesting. Sammy serves as a stabilizing force (Henderson fills the van with humanizing warmth), while Jessie plays the eager upstart Lee takes under her resentful wing. It’s a tidily balanced sampling that the actors, with Garland’s banter and via some cozy downtime, turn into flesh-and-blood personalities, people whose vulnerability feeds the escalating tension with each mile.

As the miles and hours pass, Garland adds diversions and hurdles, including a pair of playful colleagues, Tony and Bohai (Nelson Lee and Evan Lai), and some spooky dudes guarding a gas station. Garland shrewdly exploits the tense emptiness of the land, turning strangers into potential threats and pretty country roads into ominously ambiguous byways. Smartly, he also recurrently focuses on Lee’s face, a heartbreakingly hard mask that Dunst lets slip brilliantly. As the journey continues, Garland further sketches in the bigger picture — the dollar is near-worthless, the F.B.I. is gone — but for the most part, he focuses on his travelers and the engulfing violence, the smoke and the tracer fire that they often don’t notice until they do.

Despite some much-needed lulls (for you, for the narrative rhythm), “Civil War” is unremittingly brutal or at least it feels that way. Many contemporary thrillers are far more overtly gruesome than this one, partly because violence is one way unimaginative directors can put a distinctive spin on otherwise interchangeable material: Cue the artful fountains of arterial spray. Part of what makes the carnage here feel incessant and palpably realistic is that Garland, whose visual approach is generally unfussy, doesn’t embellish the violence, turning it into an ornament of his virtuosity. Instead, the violence is direct, at times shockingly casual and unsettling, so much so that its unpleasantness almost comes as a surprise.

If the violence feels more intense than in a typical genre shoot ’em up, it’s also because, I think, with “Civil War,” Garland has made the movie that’s long been workshopped in American political discourse and in mass culture, and which entered wider circulation on Jan. 6. The raw power of Garland’s vision unquestionably owes much to the vivid scenes that beamed across the world that day when rioters, some wearing T-shirts emblazoned with “ MAGA civil war ,” swarmed the Capitol. Even so, watching this movie, I also flashed on other times in which Americans have relitigated the Civil War directly and not, on the screen and in the streets.

Movies have played a role in that relitigation for more than a century, at times grotesquely. Two of the most famous films in history — D.W. Griffith’s 1915 racist epic “The Birth of a Nation” (which became a Ku Klux Klan recruitment tool) and the romantic 1939 melodrama “Gone With the Wind” — are monuments to white supremacy and the myth of the Southern Lost Cause. Both were critical and popular hits. In the decades since, filmmakers have returned to the Civil War era to tell other stories in films like “Glory,” “Lincoln” and “Django Unchained” that in addressing the American past inevitably engage with its present.

There are no lofty or reassuring speeches in “Civil War,” and the movie doesn’t speak to the better angels of our nature the way so many films try to. Hollywood’s longstanding, deeply American imperative for happy endings maintains an iron grip on movies, even in ostensibly independent productions. There’s no such possibility for that in “Civil War.” The very premise of Garland’s movie means that — no matter what happens when or if Lee and the rest reach Washington — a happy ending is impossible, which makes this very tough going. Rarely have I seen a movie that made me so acutely uncomfortable or watched an actor’s face that, like Dunst’s, expressed a nation’s soul-sickness so vividly that it felt like an X-ray.

Civil War Rated R for war violence and mass death. Running time: 1 hour 49 minutes. In theaters.

"Reality has no place in our world."

Now 23 years since it first aired, Gilmore Girls remains as beloved now as it was then. Fans watch as Rory grows up from 15 with her best friend Lane Kim ( Keiko Agena ) through high school and into Yale University to become a journalist. Lorelai searches for her match while working towards her dream of owning an inn with her best friend, Sookie ( Melissa McCarthy ). Out of 154 episodes, there are some real standouts, with the best Gilmore Girl episodes of all time rated highly by the fans on IMDb.

12 "Kiss and Tell" (Season 1, Episode 7)

Imdb score: 8.4/10.

The small Gilmore family is one of the best television families as viewers relate to their struggles, and they also grow up as the seasons progress. In the episode "Kiss and Tell," Lorelai experiences a life-changing moment: her first kiss. After Chilton’s dance marathon, Rory and Dean ( Jared Padalecki ) share a kiss at the town square gazebo. But even though Lorelai and Rory have a very close relationship, Rory is reluctant to tell her mother about what happened to her.

But a mother’s intuition is too strong, so Lorelai feels that Rory is holding back on something. Eventually, Lorelai learns about the kiss from another person, which makes her think that she’s drifting away from Rory. The episode is well-loved by viewers due to its relatable storyline and its lessons on trust and communication .

11 "Lorelai? Lorelai?" (Season 7, Episode 20)

Imdb score: 8.5/10.

Lorelai’s feelings as a mother and lover were further explored in the episode “Lorelai? Lorelai?” In the episode, Lorelai is seen worried and anxious about the future, as Rory is about to graduate from Yale, and she hasn’t gotten a job yet. To shake off her worries, Lorelai takes Rory shopping and invites Luke ( Scott Patterson ) to do karaoke at a bar.

One of the most memorable scenes in the episode is when Lorelai sings a romantic song that’s meant to woo Luke. The episode ends with a cliffhanger as Logan ( Matt Czuchry ) asks for Rory’s hand in marriage. It’s an episode that’s filled with questions such as if Lorelai will approve Logan’s proposal or if Rory will accept a job offer. It’s one of the pivotal episodes in the show that fans shouldn’t miss.

10 "Dear Emily and Richard" (Season 3, Episode 14)

Imdb rating: 8.6/10.

In what fans consider to be the best episode of Gilmore Girls ' third season , viewers are taken back in time in flashbacks to see Lorelai as a teenager, finding out she is pregnant and having Rory. This is cleverly paralleled with Rory's dad, Christopher ( David Sutcliffe ), as his current girlfriend is in the hospital about to have a baby. For the first time, fans get to witness Lorelai's relationship with her parents at that time.

With an incredible casting for a younger Lorelai, "Dear Emily and Richard" gives viewers the ultimate insight into Lorelai's upbringing and the events that unfolded before she ran away. This emotional episode also explores Emily's point of view and how distraught she was when Lorelai left. Lorelai then watches Christopher talk about his new baby girl, and fans wonder what could have been.

9 "Rory's Dance" (Season 1, Episode 9)

Imdb rating: 8.7/10.

This classic episode from Season 1 follows Rory debating whether to attend her school dance. She asks her boyfriend, Dean, to go with her, and he does. The two have a romantic evening but end up falling asleep together and do not come home. Lorelai panics, and her mother intercepts her parenting with harsh judgment.

This is one of the first real arguments fans see on the show , and it makes for a drama-filled episode. It provides exposition for Emily's character, with her showing her true colors. She fears that Rory will end up pregnant and follow in Lorelai's footsteps. Lorelai steps up her responsibility as a Mom. This engaging episode cleverly explores the bonds between the Gilmore Girls.

8 "I Can't Get Started" (Season 2, Episode 22)

Gilmore Girls is known for its explosive season finales, and this is no exception. The night before Sookie's wedding, Lorelai finds herself back with Christopher. Rory, still with Dean, sees Jess ( Milo Ventimiglia ) — who some fans consider to be the best boyfriend for Rory , upon his return and she kisses him. Christopher then receives a call from Sherry, delivering the news that she is pregnant, and he leaves once again.

This episode teases a new start for Lorelai , involving her child's father. It is the picture-perfect idea, but it did not come to fruition. Fans were also shocked by Rory's kiss with Jess, given that she is still with Dean. It has an emotional ending, as Lorelai and Rory prepare to walk down the aisle at Sookie's wedding with their lives full of boy-related chaos.

7 "Wedding Bell Blues" (Season 5, Episode 13)

Imdb rating: 8.8/10.

In this pivotal episode, Emily and Richard renew their vows after their reconciliation. Lorelai, Luke, and Rory attend. Emily invites Christopher in an attempt to get him back together with Lorelai. Rory kisses Logan, but when she is caught, a huge argument ensues between Luke and Chris. Lorelai figures out what Emily has done and vows to cut her off.

"Wedding Bell Blues" is an explosion of conflict that has been bubbling . Emily and Richard had been vocal about their view on Lorelai being with Luke. Emily bringing Christopher was one last try at intercepting it. Fans completely sympathize with Lorelai's anger, and it is a pivotal episode that undoes any progress they might have made on their strained relationship.

6 "Last Week Fights, Next Week Tights" (Season 4, Episode 21)

For fans of the couple Lorelai and Luke , this episode is a standout. Luke's sister, Liz, and her partner TJ have a Renaissance-themed wedding in the town square. Luke invites Lorelai, and they have the perfect evening together, slow dancing and talking. Luke is smitten, and he gives his love self-help book to Jess, stating that he doesn't need it anymore.

This episode features Stars Hollow at its most elegant, decorated for the wedding. This one stays in the hearts of fans, as Luke finally takes a leap of faith and asks Lorelai out. They slow dance to "Reflecting Light" by Sam Philips , which becomes associated with them as a couple. While the episode is filled with emotionally charged moments, there are still plenty of humor-filled moments such as Lorelai's trademark sarcasm and Kirk ( Sean Gunn ) and Miss Patty's ( Liz Torres ) little tiff.

5 "They Shoot Gilmores, Don't They?" (Season 3, Episode 7)

Imdb rating: 8.9/10.

This episode is quintessential Gilmore Girls. In this slow build of drama, Lorelai and Rory take part in a 24-hour charity dance marathon, along with some of their friends. Dean sits and watches, but chaos ensues when Jess and his girlfriend show up. Rory argues with him, and Dean breaks up with Rory. Elsewhere, Dave Rygalski ( A dam Brody ) charms Mrs. Kim and gets closer to Lane.

The tension in this episode is like no other, with the long-awaited love triangle conflict coming to a head . Fans of Jess rejoiced as the conclusion of the episode suggests he will finally get together with Rory, and he ends up being a well-loved boyfriend among Gilmore Girls ' fans. Bonus points are needed for the comedy factor, and Kirk celebrating his win with his beloved trophy.

4 "Those Are Strings, Pinocchio" (Season 3, Episode 22)

After following Rory's high school journey, fans finally see her graduate from Chilton. Rory gives some beautiful speeches, citing her Mom as her ultimate inspiration for everything. The two then walk the empty halls of Chilton and close the chapter. Lorelai and Sookie put in an offer on the inn.

This rewatchable Gilmore Girls episode is a true tearjerker for those who love the show and have been following along the journey so far. It is the end of an era, and Rory's speeches are a standout moment. It has everyone crying, even Luke. It also highlights Logan and Rory's romance, as Logan proclaims how much he wants to be with Rory. It is a poetic ending and looks ahead to new adventures for Rory and Lorelai.

3 "Friday Night's Alright For Fighting" (Season 6, Episode 13)

Imdb rating: 9.0/10.

In this hilarious and drama-filled episode, the Gilmores gather for Friday night dinner and spend it airing grievances and arguing. Despite the frustration-filled meeting of the family, they still throw witty quips that will surely make audiences chuckle. Meanwhile, Luke gets to know his recently discovered daughter, April, which is putting a strain on his relationship with Lorelai.

The departure from the regular episode style is effective in this episode, accurately portraying a messy family fight that everybody can relate to . Unlike other episodes of Gilmore Girls , the pace differs and dialogue is thrown around. There are also plenty of funny scenes in the episode, such as Lorelai's lunch with Rory and the messy dinner. It is a highlight of an otherwise mixed season as the Gilmores forgive and come together once more.

2 "Bon Voyage" (Season 7, Episode 22)

Imdb rating: 9.1/10.

In the final episode of Gilmore Girls ever, fans must say goodbye to 7 years' worth of characters and immersive stories. Rory's plans change when she is offered her dream job, and a going away party is organized for her. Tears ensue. Lorelai contemplates her life after Rory leaves and reconnects with Luke.

Despite being the second-highest-rated episode, it still has mixed reviews because original creators Amy Shermann-Palladino and Daniel Palladino were no longer involved . Despite that, it does succeed as a final episode, with plans falling into place. However, it also leaves some storylines open-ended, such as Lorelai and Luke's relationship. These were further explored during the revival of Gilmore Girls in 2016 . The goodbye party for Rory is a beautiful conclusion, and the episode thrives on nostalgia.
