What macOS version is your MacBook Pro currently running? That is available at Apple Menu > About This Mac.

The model year of a MacBook Pro is available at Apple menu > About This Mac.

A mid 2012 through early 2013 MacBook Pro can be upgraded to Catalina 10.15.7 but no later. See:  How to download and install macOS - Apple Support

A late 2013 and mid 2014 MacBook Pro can be upgraded to the latest version of Big Sur macOS 11 but no later. See:  How to download and install macOS - Apple Support

Safari 16.6.1 can be installed on Big Sur but not on earlier macOS versions. See: Apple security releases - Apple

Back up your data, check the application compatibility table , click here , and if your MacBook Pro is capable of it, then on the download link for Big Sur. Alternatively, use a different web browser as needed.

Catalina and above won't run 32-bit software; if you choose one of them, use Go64 as well.

How do you update an app with no update button?

Quick Links

Keeping safari updated, how to update safari in system preferences.

It's a good practice to keep your web browser constantly updated for security reasons , but Apple Safari on Mac doesn't have an update button. Here's how to keep Safari updated.

Every year, Apple releases new features for Safari, and you usually install them without realizing it because they're linked to macOS updates that you get in System Preferences.

But because Safari is a browser, Apple often lets you update to the latest version of Safari without installing the next big OS release. For example, while Safari 14.0 came bundled in macOS Big Sur , macOS Catalina users can still update to it. Apple also provides regular security updates to older versions of Safari, which is the main reason why  we recommend that you keep it updated .

Related: Why You Should Update All Your Software

To update Safari, you'll have to use the Software Update feature in System Preferences. To get there, click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the screen.

In the menu that appears, choose the "System Preferences" option.

Click System Preferences

In System Preferences, click "Software Update."

Click Software Update

The Software Update panel will show you whether there are any software updates available for your Mac. If there are, you have two choices.

If you want to install the latest operating system along with the latest version of Safari, just click the "Update Now" button and follow the process.

Related: Why You Should Update Your Web Browser

If you only want to install an update to Safari, click "More Info" under the list of available updates to see a detailed list of all updates.

More Info in Software Update

After clicking "More info," a panel will appear listing the updates available for your Mac. Make sure that the "Safari" update is selected, and uncheck "macOS" if you don't want to install a system update along with it. When you're ready, click "Install Now."

Install Safari

After a while, the Safari update will be installed on your Mac.

Once the update process is finished, you can safely quit the System Preferences app using the red Close button in the corner of the window.

Quit System Preferences

Since this process is somewhat confusing and non-obvious, we recommend enabling the auto-update feature to keep Safari and your Mac updated. Good luck!

iOS 16.6 is on the way – here are 5 new features to look out for ahead of iOS 17

Updates are coming to iMessage, Apple News and more

iPhone 14 home screen

Apple ’s next major software update, iOS 17 , is expected to roll out this September – here’s how to download the iOS 17 beta – but not before the company’s latest (and possibly final) iterative iOS 16 update, iOS 16.6, is released to the masses.

Reports suggest that multiple beta versions of iOS 16.6 are now in the hands of developers, meaning a public-ready version of the update should soon become available to anyone who owns an iPhone 8 or newer.

Where iOS 16.5 brought with it a host of bug fixes for issues related to the iPhone lock screen and Safari app , iOS 16.6 is rumored to introduce a handful of helpful (albeit mostly aesthetic) updates to apps including iMessage, Apple News and Apple Card. Below, we’ve rounded up the most significant of the lot.

Side note: To download the latest version of iOS on your iPhone, simply head to Settings > General > Software Update. Alternatively, check out our guide on how to update your iPhone to iOS 16 .

Improved Apple News sports sharing

If you’re a keen sports fan who often shares game results with friends and family, iOS 16.6 will make doing so easier. In the updated Apple News app, tapping the ellipsis next to a sports score or scheduled game will bring up a new option to "Share Game." In its current form, Apple News makes you navigate to the game page itself if you want to share result, timing or lineup details with others. A small but welcome change.

A new iCloud for Windows security prompt

This one’s a little more boring, but if you use iCloud for Windows, you may notice a slight change when logging into your account with iOS 16.6. Specifically, your iPhone will show a new prompt – complete with a verification code – if both devices aren't connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Exciting, right?

New warnings for Matter accessories

The Matter smart home standard has become all the rage among smart device enthusiasts in 2023, and iOS 16.6 will warn you if an app attempts to pair with one of your smart home accessories in an unsecure way. You’ll be able to manage unauthorized app access by heading to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. Neat!

New Apple Card alerts and prompts

For anyone in the US who’s signed up to Apple Card, iOS 16.6 will introduce more alerts and prompts related to interest payments and transaction disputes. Specifically, these new prompts will include “Did you make this purchase?”, “Dispute status”, “Dispute Completed”, three variants of “Interest Charged” and “Virtual Card Number Replaced." Sure, that all sounds pretty boring, but these changes should bring greater visibility over your finances.

iMessage Contact Key verification

This last feature is a little up in the air, since it appeared in the first iOS 16.6 developer beta, but in not the second. In any case, there’s a good chance that iMessage Contact Key verification still makes it into the final build of iOS 16.6.

Announced by Apple in December 2022, this security feature will give “users who face extraordinary digital threats – such as journalists, human rights activists, and members of government – [the option] to further verify that they are messaging only with the people they intend.” In other words, iMessage is getting an extra layer of security beyond end-to-end encryption – either as part of iOS 16.6 or future Apple updates.

Apple releases Safari 16 for macOS Monterey and Big Sur

Apple releases Safari 16 for macOS Monterey and Big Sur

The Safari 16 update is now available for macOS Monterey and Big Sur users. Let's take a look at the new version of the web browser.

What's new in Apple Safari 16 for macOS

I mentioned a few features that were introduced in Safari 16, when the first Technology Preview of the browser was released. Apple states that it has improved the performance of the browser, this includes tweaks to various animations, accessibility options, security, etc in WebKit . It also adds support for Web Inspector extensions.

Tab Groups Start Pages

Safari 16 lets you add Tab Group Start Pages, aka new tab pages, per group. To add shortcuts, click the new tab button. Drag and drop some websites from your bookmarks to the Tab Group Favorites section. This serves as your Tab Group's Start Page.

Apple Safari 16 Tab Groups Start Page

You can hide the shortcuts by clicking the button in the bottom right corner and disabling the option that says "Tab Group Favorites". There is another way to access your frequently visited websites. Right-click on a tab in a Tab Group, and pin it to prevent it from being closed.

Apple Safari Tab Groups favorites

Safari 16 supports 2 view modes for Tab Groups: a list view, and an overview. To view a list of your tabs, right-click on the Tab Group's name in the sidebar, and select "Show Tabs in Sidebar".

Apple Safari 16 Tab Groups sidebar

The list can be collapsed in similar fashion by clicking "Hide Tabs in Sidebar".

Apple Safari 16 Tab Groups show in sidebar

The Show Tab Overview option in the sidebar's context menu switches to a thumbnail view. You can also toggle this mode by clicking the dual pane button in the top right corner of Safari's window.

Apple Safari 16 Tab Groups Overview

You can customize the appearance of the current Tab Group from the bottom-right menu in the Start Page. Select the background image option, and pick an image that you would like to use as the wallpaper. You may set a different background images for each Tab Group.

As for UI Changes, some shortcuts in the sidebar have been moved to the bottom, this includes Bookmarks, Reading List, Shared with You, and iCloud Tabs. The Safari 16 update fixes 4 security issues in the browser, you can read about them on Apple's support portal .

Settings sync across devices

Safari 16 will sync the settings that you have set for websites across your other devices. e.g. if you blocked notifications, location access, etc. So you don't have to choose the options every time you access the website on one of your Apple devices.

Password Editing

The password manager in Safari 16 now supports the editing of strong passwords in order to comply with a website's requirements. When you sign up for an account on a website and click the Passwords button, Safari will generate a password for you.

Apple Safari 16 edit strong password

Click the words "Strong Password" to bring up the Passwords panel into view. Select the "Other Options" button, and click the "Edit Strong Password" option to customize the password.

AVIF format

Safari 16 on iOS introduces support for the AVIF format for still images. It is an alternative to PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP and supports lossless and lossy compression, multiple color spaces, etc. AVIF support and Passkeys are not yet available in Safari 16 for Mac and iPad, Apple says that it will add these features to the browser when macOS Ventura and iPadOS are released in October.

Open the Apple menu on your Mac, and head to About this Mac > and check for Software Update to install Safari 16 on your machine. The latest version is available alongside the macOS 12.6 update that was released yesterday.

I wonder why Microsoft is unable to release the same quality software as Apple does. Thanks @Ashwin for the article! :]

“I wonder why Microsoft is unable to release the same quality software as Apple does.”?

How many hardware configurations does Apple officially support? How many hardware configurations does Microsoft officially support? Which company designs, makes, sells etc… the hardware that Apple supports?

Fu<king stupid question.

“How many hardware configurations does Apple officially support? How many hardware configurations does Microsoft officially support?”

Irrelevant. The UI/UX team and the kernel/hardware team have nothing in common.

You have to be so nasty? State your points but leave the insults out.

AVIF is nice (and better than WebP!) but the real game changer will be JPEG XL.

update safari 16.6

Apple has officially released iOS 16.6 for all iPhone users. The latest software update includes “important bug fixes and security updates,” according to the release notes.

Apple has also dropped iPadOS 16.6, tvOS 16.6, watchOS 9.6, and macOS 13.5 with the same release notes. A separate update for HomePod delivers “performance and stability improvements.”

iOS 16.6 has been in developer and public beta form since May. Last week, Apple sent out the first release candidate version of iOS 16.6.

Today’s summertime release isn’t expected to include any new user-facing features. Those are all packed into iOS 17, which is due out in September. Instead, the release will likely be one of the last updates to iOS 16 before shifting into strictly security-focused updates. One exception is Hebrew language support for Apple TV and HomePod.

iOS 15, for example, climbed to version 15.7.X as an option for users delaying the upgrade to iOS 16.

iOS 17 also drops support for the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus. That means this iOS 16 development cycle will mark the final updates for those phones as well. However, Apple continues to release security updates to hardware running older versions of iOS for several years.

Each software update is available for all users starting today.

Comments About Safari 16.6

Notable replies.

Safari 16.6 for Monterey and Big Sur was actually re-released on the 26th with a bump in build numbers: Monterey Safari 16.6 (17615.3.12.11.3) Big Sur Safari 16.6 (16615.3.12.11.3)

To this day, I still cannot use Safari (on Mac, but OK in iOS, go figure) to display any map or infographic on my city, state highway dept. or utility’s websites.

But other browsers work fine? Can you post some links?

Chuck, I had a very similar problem on my MacBook Air (2020) that somehow migrated to my MBP 2022. I think the problem was on my 2011 MBP initially but cannot remember that far back.

Frustrating. I realized that the culprit managed its way onto the new machine when I moved data from the Air to the Pro via a Carbon Copy Cloner restore.

Since there is really no easy and though way to reformat an SSD so that one knows there is not a thread of anything old left on it, I asked my Apple dealer to do it. It took a lot of convincing that I wanted a better than VIRGIN MBP. They did as I asked. Then, using an external Toshiba T5 SSD, I moved only the data files I needed from the SSD to the MBP.

I then downloaded absolutely fresh copies of the programs I needed from the net. I chose this order so that the freshly downloaded apps were initially opened using that data file I had just placed on the drive. I did NOT want the app to create a new file. (The drag and drop feature works quite well here.O

I copied no files from the ~Library ƒ. I even rebuilt my Little Snitch database from scratch instead of loading my saved prefs file.

The problem was fixed. I cannot promise nor guarantee that my solution would work for you. If you have the time, and a number of faithfully executed backups, It just might be the ticket out of your thicket. If you do take me up, I really would like to know the outcome.

I discussed clean installs in this general area in:

It’s definitely worth trying a lot of other solutions first, since these deep rebuilds take a ton of time.

example: Michigan DOT Traffic and road conditions map.

Overlays and legends show, but not map layer (blank white screen). Displays correctly on Firefox, Chrome, Duck browser, Safari (on iOS/iPad OS). This and other data maps (electric utility outages, etc.) and info graphics are never displayed on Mac Safari. Sometimes get a “OpenGL or WebGL Not Supported” back from sites. Currently MBPro (2016), Safari v 16.6, Monterey 12.6.8.

I tried it on my Mac (Mac mini 2018, macOS Big Sur 11.7.9, Safari 16.6 (16615.3.12.11.3, 16615)).

It all seems to load normally. The map layer loaded a few seconds after everything else, but it all loaded for me.

My only Safari extensions are AdBlock Plus, the ABP control panel, and Webex (disabled). ABP was enabled, but didn’t seem to affect the site’s behavior.

My ISP is Comcast. I am using my own DNS server (on a Raspberry Pi) that resolves everything on its own (via the root-servers, not falling back to any third-party DNS server).

It works here in macOS 13.5 Ventura too.

Have you tried it from a guest account to see if there might be an account-related setting that’s causing it? And do you have another Mac that could try it (or do you have a friend who could bring a laptop over)?

It feels like something highly specific to your setup, and some of these troubleshooting steps might reveal where to look.

Today’s release of Safari is the seventh since last fall. It focuses on key bug fixes and feature polish.

  • Fixed using currentcolor with color-mix() .
  • Fixed content at block-start edge to have their trimmed margins reflected in the computed style.
  • Fixed trimmed block-end margins for block containers to be reflected in the computed style in a horizontal writing mode.
  • Fixed compression streams to handle large outputs during the flush stage.
  • Fixed trimming nested self-collapsing children at block-end .
  • Fixed the CSS hypot() function sometimes returning the result squared.
  • Fixed container query length units to use the content box instead of the border box.
  • Fixed serializing properties directly in the parent group rule only for the first nested style rule.
  • Fixed the value not updating on <meter> and <progress> elements.

iOS 16.6, macOS Ventura 13.5, and Other Updates Patch Actively Exploited Vulnerabilities

The iOS 16.6, iPadOS 16.6, macOS Ventura 13.5, watchOS 9.6, and tvOS 16.6 updates that Apple released today address a long list of security vulnerabilities, including two that Apple says may have been actively exploited.

iOS 16

There are several fixes for kernel vulnerabilities, including one that could allow an app to modify a sensitive kernel state. This is the vulnerability that Apple says may have been actively exploited, but Apple's wording indicates that it only received reports of active exploits against versions of iOS that were released before iOS 15.7.1. It is, however, patched on all platforms.

The updates also fix a WebKit vulnerability that Apple says could have been actively exploited, but Apple first addressed this issue with the iOS 16.5.1 (c) and macOS Ventura 13.4.1 (c) Rapid Security Responses, so some ‌iPhone‌, ‌iPad‌, and Mac users may have already had protection from this issue.

Because these new software releases include so many security fixes, it is a good idea to install them as soon as possible. A full list of the patches that Apple has implemented can be found on Apple's security support website .

LoanDepot says about 17M customers had personal data and Social Security numbers stolen during cyberattack

update safari 16.6

Almost 17 million LoanDepot customers had sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers, stolen in a January ransomware attack , the company has confirmed.

The loan and mortgage giant company said in a data breach notice filed with Maine’s attorney general’s office that the stolen LoanDepot customer data includes names, dates of birth, email and postal addresses, financial account numbers, and phone numbers. The stolen data also includes Social Security numbers, which LoanDepot collected from customers.

The number of affected LoanDepot customers rose from 16.6 million as initially disclosed to federal regulators last month, which did not say what specific customer data had been stolen.

LoanDepot was hit by a cyberattack around January 4 that it described at the time as involving the “encryption of data,” or a ransomware attack. It’s not known if LoanDepot paid a ransom, nor would a company spokesperson say when previously asked by TechCrunch.

The cyberattack left LoanDepot’s millions of customers unable to make payments or access their online accounts in the weeks that followed.

LoanDepot was one of several loan and mortgage companies targeted by malicious hackers in recent months.

Mortgage and loan giant Mr. Cooper said hackers stole the personal information of more than 14 million customers during an October cyberattack, costing the company at least $25 million in additional costs. Weeks later, in November, one of the largest U.S. home insurance providers, Fidelity National Financial, was hit by a ransomware attack , knocking the company offline for over a week.

LoanDepot said in its latest regulatory filing that the cyberattack will ding the company’s fiscal first quarter earnings to the tune of between $12 to $17 million.

This story was originally published on January 22, 2024, and updated on February 26, 2024, with new information about what customer data was stolen. Updated on February 27, 2024 with new earnings impact.
