oxford cambridge day tour from london

The University Church of St Mary the Virgin of the building of All Souls College

The tour begins in Oxford where studies began in 1096AD. This is an impressive city, with its ancient University buildings contrasted by the young and vibrant students who make up a large part of the city’s population.

Our tour guide will take you along ancient cobblestone squares and alleyways and pass 14th and 15th century university buildings with their famous spires. Famous alumni of Oxford who would have taken these paths include Lewis Caroll, Oscar Wilde, JRR Tolkein and Bill Clinton.

The first stop is Christ Church College founded in 1548 by King Henry V111 . This is one of the most impressive Oxford colleges, with some extraordinary architecture. Its iconic bell tower was designed by Sir Christopher Wren, and its cathedral spire is a city landmark. And for those Harry Potter fans, the dining room was used in many of the Harry Potter films as Hogwarts dining room. From here we continue the guided tour passing the iconic  Bodleian Library, the oldest library in Europe, with over 12 million items.

2. Cambridge

oxford cambridge day tour from london

Kings College Chapel Cambridge and punting on the River Cam

The second half of our Oxford and Cambridge day tour from London is spent in Cambridge where the University was founded in 1209.. Cambridge has a very different feel to Oxford. It is a smaller town surrounded by countryside with the picturesque River Cam running through the centre of the town, where students and visitors gently go ‘punting’ along the river.

We start the guided tour with a visit to the neo-classical Senate House, one of the most famous buildings in the University of Cambridge, today used for graduate degree ceremonies. From here, we visit the extraordinary Corpus Clock that was designed by Stephen Hawking. Next stop is the Chapel at Kings College built in 1486 by King Henry VI. It is an architectural masterpiece, with extraordinary acoustic properties, beautiful stained glass windows and a magnificent fan-vaulted ceiling. From here, our guide takes you into the city itself which boasts many impressive university courtyards with their lush green lawns surrounded by ancient university buildings. The tour will continue on to one of Cambridge’s most famous landmarks, the Mathematical Bridge, spanning the River Cam. First built in 1749 it remains a mathematical puzzle.

Cambridge has many hundreds of famous alumni including Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton, King Charles III and Rachel Weisz.

Footnote: There has always been great rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge Universities, and there are iconic annual sporting events between them, including a boat race on the Thames and a cricket match at Lords and in the competition for Nobel  laureates, Oxford has 69 while Cambridge wins with a huge 118.

Should You Visit Oxford or Cambridge as a Day Trip from London?

Cambridge University

Both Oxford and Cambridge are popular day trip options from London.  They are beautiful cities that are home to world-famous universities and more.  If time is limited, you may have to choose one to spend time in. Should you visit Oxford or Cambridge?

In this post, I will compare Cambridge and Oxford to help you figure out which city makes the best day trip.  Will it be the dreaming spires of Oxford or the Backs in Cambridge? The answer is not the same for everyone.

Google Map of london

Since both Oxford and Cambridge are home to world-renowned universities, a visit would not be complete without touring some of the colleges.   Oxford has 38 colleges while Cambridge has 31. Of course, it’s not just about quantity. In a short visit, there isn’t time to see all of the colleges anyway.

You get to walk in the footsteps of some of the most influential people in history.  Some of Oxford’s most notable alumni are Margaret Thatcher, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Oscar Wilde, while Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, and Oliver Cromwell are a few of the notable alumni from Cambridge.  Both universities have educated many world leaders, nobel prize winners, and even Olympic athletes.

In Oxford, the top colleges to visit are Christ Church, Exeter, and Trinity.   Christ Church is the most famous of the Oxford colleges, so there are lots of places to see.  Don’t miss the Cathedral, private art collection, or the impressive dining hall. Both Exeter and Trinity Colleges have lovely chapels, beautiful grounds, and of course history.

Tom Quad - Best Way to Visit Christ Church College - Two Traveling Texans

In Cambridge, some of the top colleges to visit are King’s College, St. John’s, and Queen’s College.  King’s College Chapel is one of the most beautiful churches I have ever been to. The stained glass is breathtaking.  Tour Queen’s College and you can walk across the Mathematical Bridge.

St. Johns College in Cambridge

Keep in mind that the college visiting hours vary along with the school calendar, so be sure to check specifics in advance.  Also, note that most individual colleges will charge a small entrance fee.

If you’re not sure about visiting individual colleges, both cities offer walking tours that are led by students to learn about each university’s history.   Click here for more information about a Cambridge walking tour or click here for more information on an Oxford walking tour .

Winner: Tie

A university could not exist without a library, so it may not surprise you that both Cambridge and Oxford have notable libraries. In addition to having large collections of books, the libraries are also architectural masterpieces.

In Oxford, the Bodleian Library houses over 12 million items, making it the second largest in Britain after the British Library.  In addition, there is an exhibition space showcasing the jewels of the collection like the Vernon Manuscript , the first book printed with Arabic moveable type, and a rare surviving copy of the Gutenberg Bible.

The Bodleian Library is actually comprised of five buildings, including the Divinity School and iconic Radcliffe Camera near Broad Street.  The Divinity School was featured in the first two Harry Potter films as Hogwarts’ hospital wing and is known for its fan-vaulted ceiling. Some areas of the Bodleian Library are only accessible by either doing a self-guided or guided tour.

The Bodleian Library

In Cambridge, there is the Wren Library designed by Christopher Wren, the architect who also designed St. Paul’s Cathedral in London and the old Naval Hospital in Greenwich to name a few.  It reminded me of the Long Room Library at Trinity College in Dublin .

In addition to the architecture and the books, you can see William Shakespeare’s First Folio, the original manuscript of A.A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh, handwritten manuscripts by John Milton and Lord Tennyson, and some of Sir Isaac Newton’s notebooks.

The library is part of Trinity College.  It’s free to go inside just use the side gate on Garret Hostel Lane or the Avenue off Queen’s Road.  The Wren Library has limited hours (Monday – Friday 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm and Saturday 10:30 am – 12:30 pm).

There may be a wait since they only allow 15 people inside at a time.  We waited about 15 minutes.  It takes about 30 minutes to look at the displays.

Winner: Oxford

Both cities have world-class museums and many are free! If you are only planning on visiting for the day, choose one or two museums to visit.

In Cambridge, I love the Fitzwilliam and the Museum of Archeology and Anthropology.  The Fitzwilliam Museum has a bit of everything and reminds me a bit of the British Museum . The  Museum of Archeology and Anthropology has a collection of over 1 million artifacts that covers 2 million years of human history.

If neither of those museums appeals to you, there is also the Museum of Zoology, Museum of Classical Archeology, Sedgewick Museum of Earth Sciences, Polar Museum, Kettle’s Yard, and Whipple Museum of the History of Science.

In Oxford, the top museum is the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology which was founded back in 1683. It has a diverse collection covering four floors including everything from Egyptian mummies to European art. You could also visit the Museum of Natural History, Pitt Rivers Museum, the Museum of Oxford, or the Museum of the History of Science.

Both the Fitzwilliam and the Ashmolean have diverse collections for both art and history lovers.  Honestly, it is hard to determine which city offers better museums. For me, I think the tie-breaker is the impressive building that houses the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge .

Winner: Cambridge (by a tie-breaker)

Those that love a traditional English pub will not be disappointed in either Cambridge or Oxford.  Both have several pubs that you can check out, but in each city there is one that is most famous.

In Oxford, you must visit the Eagle and Child which has been a public house since 1650.  This was the favorite spot for ‘The Inklings’ to get together in the 1930s and ’40s and discuss the manuscripts they were working on. The Inklings was an informal group of writers, including C.S. Lewis (the author of the Chronicles of Narnia children’s books), J.R.R. Tolkien (who wrote Lord of the Rings), Charles Williams, and Hugo Dyson. Have a pint in the pub and take the time to think that some of the most famous books in the world were dreamed up where you’re sitting.

In Cambridge, there is the Eagle.  It originally opened in 1667, but may be best known as the place where Francis Crick announced that he and James Watson had “discovered the secret of life” after they developed their proposal for the structure of DNA in 1953.  Russell loved the special Eagle DNA beer named to commemorate the event.  Also, don’t miss the ceiling in the room in the back.  It is full of graffiti from men that fought in World War II.  Funny, it was originally named the Eagle and Child!

Punting is the English version of Venice’s gondolas.  You can either do a tour with a driver (punter) or hire (rent) a punt and do the punting yourself.  We have tried both. Punting is a lot harder than it looks.

If you are not comfortable doing the punting, try one of the tours – it’s a fun way to learn more about the city.

punting on the Cam River

Cambridge is famous for punting on the Cam river.  It’s a beautiful ride through the Backs and under some unique bridges.

Oxford also offers punting on the River Cherwell, but you don’t get views of the colleges like in Cambridge.  You may catch a glimpse of Tom Tower but mostly it’s nature that surrounds the river.

Keep in mind, if you are planning your London day trip in the winter , there is no punting in Oxford in December or January, but there is punting in Cambridge year around.

Winner: Cambridge

Since most people think of Venice when they hear Bridge of Sighs, you may be surprised to learn that both Oxford and Cambridge have bridges called “Bridge of Sighs.”   While I think both are pretty, neither compares to the original.

Bridge of Sighs in Oxford

Oxford has a few Harry Potter filming locations, while Cambridge does not.

A few scenes were filmed at Christ Church College .  The dining room at the college inspired the Great Hall at Hogwarts.  You can also see filming locations at the Bodleian Library. Die-hard Harry Potter fans can take a tour in Oxford ( like this one ) to learn more about the city’s connection to Harry Potter.

Cambridge may not have any connections to Harry Potter, but it has been used as a filming location too.   The Theory of Everything , the story of Professor Stephen Hawking , was filmed around the city and shows popular attractions like St. John’s College, Kings College Chapel, and the Bridge of Sighs.

One of my favorite things to do in England is visit castles.  Oxford Castle is conveniently located in the city of Oxford. It was originally built in the 10th century by the Normans to defend the town, then became a prison around the 14th century.  Much of the original castle was destroyed in the English Civil War, but the parts that survived were used as a prison until it was decommissioned in 1996.

Oxford Castle in England

You can go inside Oxford Castle which includes seeing St. George’s Tower, the crypt, the Debtors’ Tower, and more.  From the top of St. George’s Tower, one of the oldest buildings in Oxford, there are stunning 360° panoramic views of the city.  Read reviews of Oxford Castle here .

Unfortunately, there are no castles in Cambridge.

You might not have much time for shopping during a day trip but it’s good to know that both cities have lots of options.  In addition to the standard high street stores, both Cambridge and Oxford have local markets.

Cambridge’s outdoor market dates back to the middle ages!  From Monday to Saturdays from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, it’s a general market with a variety of goods like books, music, clothes, jewelry, local food, plants, and more.  On Sundays, from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm it turns into a local food, arts, and crafts market.

Anisa with phone boxes and the Cambridge Market in the background - visit Cambridge - Two Traveling Texans

Oxford has several markets.  The Covered Market is home to over 40 small merchants, a few cafes, and food shops. The market is open from 8:00 am to 5:50 pm Monday to Saturday, and from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sundays.  (Note that some businesses in the Covered Market will have different opening hours.)

There is also the Gloucester Green Market which has different offerings depending on the day of the week. On Thursdays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, you can find antiques and arts and crafts and on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, there is a bit of everything, including some incredible street food vans.

Both Cambridge and Oxford are easy to get to from London, although Cambridge is slightly further away.  You can get to either city in around an hour by train. There are also bus options that are cheaper but take a bit longer.

Head to either London Liverpool Street or King’s Cross Station to catch the train to Cambridge.  For Oxford, the trains leave from either London Paddington or Marylebone. Check the train schedules and pricing here.  To get the lowest prices on train tickets, book in advance, choose specific train trains, and avoid peak hours.

Whether you do a Oxford or Cambridge day trip, it’s best to take the train, but for those that have more time a bus is another option especially if you want to travel late.  National Express provides 24-hour service to both Oxford and Cambridge from London Victoria Station. Check schedules and pricing with National Express to Cambridge here or check schedules and pricing with National Express to Oxford here.

For those traveling to Oxford, there is also what is called the Oxford Tube.  The Oxford Tube is a bus that runs frequently 24 hours a day, starts at Victoria Station, and has a few other stops in London. Find more information about the Oxford Tube here.

It’s hard for me to choose an overall winner between Cambridge and Oxford because I love both cities.  I have spent more time in Cambridge because it is closer to me (in Norwich), but I want to see more of Oxford.

If you are a Harry Potter fan, I think Oxford is the better choice, otherwise, I lean towards Cambridge.  It may not be the most logical choice based on my analysis but my heart leads me there. Cambridge may not have a castle, but there are other places close to London (i.e. Windsor or Dover ) to visit if that is your priority.

Both Cambridge and Oxford are amazing cities and in an ideal world, you could visit both.  But if I had to choose between a Cambridge or Oxford day trip, it would be Cambridge.

It’s hard to explain. Nothing against Oxford, but I think Cambridge is prettier (not by much) and it’s lovely to walk by the Colleges along the Cam River.  It’s an emotional choice for me, not one that can be tallied on a scorecard.

If you decide to go to Cambridge, be sure to check out my Cambridge day trip guide.

Oxford and Cambridge are only located 66 miles from each other, but given how much there is to see in each city I would not recommend trying to see both cities in one day. A day trip from London to Oxford and Cambridge would be too rushed, especially if you are relying on public transportation. (Note: There is no direct train between Cambridge and Oxford)

If you can’t decide between the two cities and have your heart set on seeing both you could do a day tour that goes to both cities.  An Oxford and Cambridge day tour is your best option because you won’t waste time finding the way and you get to see the highlights.

Get details about the tour here.

Ok, it’s your turn, I want to hear which city is calling your name.  Do you want to visit Oxford to see the Harry Potter locations or visit Cambridge to go punting on the Cam?  It’s not an easy decision – I know!

The good news is that they both are fantastic places to visit so I don’t think you can go wrong with either one.

  • Harry Potter fans should visit Oxford to see filming locations and other spots connected to the films.
  • If you want to visit a castle, it’s probably better to do a day trip to Dover, Windsor , or Hampton Court Palace.
  • When you go to Oxford, be sure to stop in at the Eagle and Child.
  • Whichever city you choose, definitely spend some time exploring the colleges.  That’s what made these cities famous.
  • If you have your heart set on seeing both cities and you only have a day, book an Oxford and Cambridge tour from London like this one .  It will be rushed but you can see the main highlights.

If you’re visiting London and only have the time for one or two day trips, inevitably you will be trying to decide between planning a visit to Oxford or Cambridge – to of the world’s most iconic university towns.

In general, visiting Oxford is a great choice for those looking for a livelier city. On the other hand, Cambridge is a great choice for those looking for a quieter, picture-perfect getaway.

From London, both are easy to visit with lots of connections and a short travel time. Both cities have universities that are considered amongst the best in the world and are rich in history, as well as being located in the beautiful English countryside. However, which one should you choose to visit?

Table of Contents

Known for having one of the most prestigious universities in the world boasting alumni such as Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll and JRR Tolkien, the city of Oxford is not only a great representation of a quaint English town but also a major city for science, technology, art and innovation.

Radcliffe Camera in Oxford

Accessibility

Oxford is easily accessible by most modes of transportation and is especially popular for visitors travelling from London as you can reach the city in around an hour by train.

One of the most convenient and best ways to do an Oxford day trip from London is by train. You can start your day by catching a train from Paddington Station in West London.

You can expect trains to pass more frequently on a weekday than on the weekend. So plan accordingly. You can buy tickets and view schedules here .

If you prefer travelling by bus, your journey will take a bit longer but the frequency in which the buses pass is better with the waiting time being no more than 10 to 15 minutes.

Of course, you can also drive to Oxford from London. You can browse options here if you’re looking to rent a car. Travelling by car can have the added bonus of being able to explore other must-see England destinations on the way.

Once you’re at Oxford, it is easy to explore on foot since the main sights are within the city centre.

Sheldonian Theatre

Affordability

When considering the affordability element to deciding whether to visit Cambridge or Oxford, the cost doesn’t differ too much.

Generally, statistics show that London is the most expensive city in the UK with other cities in the south of England including Cambridge, Brighton and, of course, Oxford coming in not far behind. That being said, this has more to do with the cost of living and is unlikely to have much of a difference to a tourist visiting for a day.

In general, you can expect a visit to Oxford to cost more or less the same as heading to Cambridge and will fall in line with your overall England travel costs .

Meadow Building at Christ Church College

Things to do in Oxford

There are so many things to do in Oxford. On a day trip to Oxford, you can go around the university town to the different University of Oxford colleges, walking the same paths numerous students and famous scholars have walked. You can  book this walking tour or this guided walking tour  to learn more about the history of the city.

In the heart of the city, you can climb up 99 steps to the viewing platform of Oxford’s highest building — the Carfax Tower. From the tower, you’ll get a stunning panoramic view of the old city from above.

From here you’ll be able to visit Christ Church College and see firsthand where some of the scenes from Harry Potter took place.

In fact, the dining hall in Christ Church was replicated to create the Great Hall of Hogwarts and seeing it is enough to make any Harry Potter fan swoon. Other filming sites for the movies in Oxford include the Bodleian Library and the New College. You can also view the gorgeous Gothic architecture of the Christ Church Cathedral and the college chapel.

Nearby, on Golden Cross, you’ll come across the popular Covered Market where you can browse to find what your heart desires whether that be clothes, treats or other fun things.

On High Street, you’ll be stopped in your tracks when you spot the University Church of St Mary the Virgin. The magnificent church has been a thriving institution in Oxford for over seven hundred years.

From here if you continue on St Mary’s Passage you’ll find the impressive Radcliffe Camera. Today, you can sit in the reading room of the Radcliffe but with its long and rich history, you might be pleasantly surprised by what you learn about it like how it’s the first circular library in England.

If you’re still in the mood for some reading, you can visit the original Blackwell’s bookshop and roam the store until you find your next book, music or work of art.

Last but not least, when you both towns, you’ll get a chance to experience the well-known colleges. Although the University of Oxford’s colleges are mostly spread out around the city, you can find what resembles a traditional main campus at the Science Area near the Radcliffe Camera.

If you have more time to explore, you can always stroll around the University Parks to the beautiful gardens. You can also take in the beautiful architecture at the Oxford Divinity School.

Day Tours from London to Oxford

If you’d rather take the guesswork out of planning your day trip to Oxford, then heading to the city on a guided tour is an excellent choice. There are lots of options that include stops in the city to choose from.

Another great option is this guided tour which also includes stops in both Oxford and some charming Cotswolds villages .

If you’re keen to see Stonehenge and Windsor Castle along with visiting Oxford, then you may find this group tour to be a great option.

And Harry Potter fans will absolutely love this full-day tour which includes a visit to the studio in Watford along with a tour of Oxford.

Oxford Skyline

Located along the River Cam, Cambridge has a long history dating back to the 13th century which makes it a compelling and beautiful city to visit.

The university boasts alumni such as Sir Isaac Newton, Stephen Hawking and Charles Darwin and the city itself has a lot to offer visitors. Visiting Cambridge as a day trip from London is a great way to experience this quintessential university town.

When choosing between Oxford or Cambridge to visit, you can take the distance into consideration. However, it takes around 1 to 1.5 hours to reach Cambridge from London – similar to that when travelling to Oxford.

If you’re looking to travel with ease and convenience, an excellent option to get to Cambridge is by train, just buy your ticket beforehand to save on tickets .

Another option is to travel by bus, although it takes longer you can save some money on the fare. One way of your journey will take about 3 hours and you can catch the bus at London Victoria Station. You can also browse the bus schedules here .

Peaceful Cam River

In general, you can freely pick between Oxford and Cambridge to visit and choose which one you like the most without putting too much thought into the cost as the deciding factor.

Depending on what your plans are, you can control how much you spend when exploring the city. If you’re looking to stick to a budget, it won’t be a problem since most of the main attractions are free.

As mentioned already, there isn’t a huge difference in price between the two cities so this is not a major determining factor.

Trinity College in Cambridge

Things to do in Cambridge

On your visit to Cambridge, you’ll discover that there’s so much history and beauty all around the city. If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the available activities and sights to see, you can join a free walking tour or this paid walking tour that can help lead the way around the city.

If you’re in the mood to explore on your own, you can’t go wrong visiting a few of the 31 Cambridge colleges to get a feel for the city. For example, two of the most popular colleges are Trinity College and King’s College.

You can pay to enter the colleges and even just admiring them from the outside is worth the visit but you can also get a good view from the grounds of King’s College or by entering through Trinity Lane to take a better look at Trinity College.

On Cambridge Market Hill, you can take a stroll through the market to search for delicious food, jewellery, clothes and other treasures.

To see and hear one of the city’s impressive works of art you’ll have to walk to the Taylor Library to see the Corpus Clock. The clock is more of an art display than an actual functioning clock because it doesn’t always tell you the accurate time.

For a bigger dose of art, you can visit The Fitzwilliam Museum free of charge. Here you’ll find treasures from all over the world including paintings, ornaments and trinkets.

After touring the museum, you can experience the city on the water and take a punt down the river. You can either do the punting yourself or relax and enjoy the ride while someone else does it for you.

To finish your day on a high note you can climb up the steps at St Mary’s church and get a mesmerising view of Cambridge from above. Of course, nothing beats unwinding with a pint at one of Cambridge’s many pubs.

Oxford vs Cambridge: The Verdict

On the surface, there is not a lot of difference between Cambridge and Oxford so it can be a bit tricky to choose which is the better day trip option. However, both cities have their similarities and differences that make them each unique.

If you’re looking for a livelier city then Oxford is for you, but if you’re looking for a more picture-perfect city then Cambridge takes the win.

Oxford is also a good option for fans of Harry Potter as there are several filming locations scattered throughout the city. Due to its location, Oxford also make a good jumping-off point for exploring the towns and villages in the Cotswolds if you have the time.

Cambridge is smaller than Oxford but no less charming – in fact, it may be even more so! It’s compact nature makes it a joy to explore and the backs of the colleges and it’s ideal location on the River Cam make it a tremendous place for a historic and tranquil getaway. And though it is popular in both cities, Cambridge is also an excellent place to try your hand at punting!

No matter which city you decide on, you’ll finish your day trip with beautiful memories.

Both Oxford and Cambridge have a lot to offer visitors – from historic city centres, fascinating universities and a vibrant student life. You cannot go wrong with whichever you end up choosing.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system.

  • Visit Christ Church College
  • Walking tour of Cambridge
  • See the Bridge of Sighs and take a guided tour of the King’s College chapel

Oxford and Cambridge Tour from London

We’ll begin our day traveling across the Chiltern Hills to Oxford , the City of Dreaming Spires, whose hushed courtyards have inspired generations of scholars including Bill Clinton, and writers Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland); CS Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia), and the immortal J.R.R. Tolkien, author of Lord of the Rings. On our walking tour, we’ll visit Christ Church college, where several scenes from the Harry Potter franchise were filmed. See the Bodleian Library, and the picture-perfect courtyards for which Oxford is justifiably famous.

Cambridge is a wonderful blend of the everyday and the extraordinary – a living city that has shaped history and today reflect the best of history and contemporary life. It was the inspiration for Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton and several of the Monty Python gang. We’ll go on a guided tour of the magnificent chapel of Kings College, founded in 1441, and a fascinating walking tour of a city filled with beautiful buildings and historical quirks, including the famous Bridge of Sighs.

Christ Church

A treat for moviegoers of all ages, Christ Church is instantly recognizable as one of the major locations for the Harry Potter films! Marvel at the magical grandeur of the Great Hall, used as the setting for Hogwarts.

Senate House

Once you’ve left Oxford, you’ll make your way to the beautiful city of Cambridge. It’s here that you will visit the Senate House at the world-famous University of Cambridge. Before used by the Council of the Senate for important meetings, it is now the chosen location for students’ degree ceremonies. You’ll get to explore this special location and discover its important history before venturing onto the Corpus Clock!

Corpus Clock

Visit the Corpus Clock, a unique invention outside the Taylor Library at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge University. Revealed to the world by Stephen Hawking, it is made from a 24-carat gold-plated stainless steel disc and has no numbers to tell the time. Instead, it shows the time through lights that shine through individual slits. This unmissable innovation will stay in your mind long after you’ve left!

Mathematical Bridge

You’ll also get to see Cambridge’s Mathematical Bridge during your stop. Designed by William Etheridge, it is nearly 300 years old and has attracted visitors from all across the world. The design gives visitors an intriguing conundrum – it uses only straight timbers but the bridge arches. It’s an absolute must-see!

King’s College Chapel

One of the main highlights of the trip is visiting the exquisite King’s College Chapel. Used as a symbol representing the city of Cambridge, the Chapel is a popular tourist attraction for people across the world. Taking a century to build, starting in 1446 on Henry VI’s demands, King’s College Chapel displays wonderful gothic architecture and huge, enchanting stained glass windows. Featuring the world’s largest fan vault and famous artwork from Rubens, there’s plenty to learn and discover at the home of the King’s College Chapel Choir. The estimated arrival time back to London is around 7.00 pm.
