Wout van Aert secures overall title at Tour of Britain

Carlos Rodríguez holds off chase to take solo stage 8 win in Caerphilly

How it unfolded

Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) secured overall victory at the Tour of Britain with a calculated and hugely impressive ride on the final hilly stage in south Wales.

The Belgian was attacked and isolated but kept his cool, chased hard, controlled his closest rivals and did enough to win the red, white and blue jersey.

Spain’s Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers) stayed away to win the stage after making a 50km attack, but he started the day 39 seconds down on Van Aert.

Van Aert led home the chasers and finished just 11 seconds behind him to win the Tour of Britain by just three seconds ahead of Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X), with Damien Howson (Q36.5) finishing third on the stage and overall, also at three seconds.

The USA’s Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers) was fourth overall, also at three seconds and stage placings.

“I have to thank the team for this win,” Van Aert said. “When Rodriguez attacked with 50km to go, I didn’t think I could win the GC, but then my teammates came back up to me and made all the difference.

“We knew the guys away were climbers, and they would suffer on the flat roads to the finish, then I had to believe that I could give it everything twice on the climb. I did, and it worked out.”

After a week of sprint finishes, the Tour of Britain headed to south Wales for the final stage and hilly showdown in the valleys near Caerphilly.

The two climbs of Caerphilly Mountain came late in the stage, but the attacks came early in the valleys, with Oliver Wood (Great Britain), Max Walker (Trinity Racing), Casper Van Uden (Team DSM-firmenich), Abram Stockman (TDT-Unibet), James Fouche (Bolton Equities Black Spoke) and Johan Meens (Bingoal WB).

They opened a gap of 1:30 in the rain, with Jumbo-Visma and then Movistar leading the chase on the flat opening 70km.

A major non-race vehicle incident before the first classified climb meant the race was stopped after 83 km and then diverted via a different route. The riders covered a longer loop in the next valley with a police escort before they returned to the stage route.

After a short pause, the six-rider breakaway was allowed to rebuild their three-minute advantage. However, the delay disrupted the attack and fired up the peloton, with the gap falling quickly to 1:20 on the Rhigos climb as the valley roads began to hurt.

With 55km to go, local resident Luke Rowe upped the pace, and Ineos Grenadiers lined out the peloton as they rode at speed between parked cars. The finale of the race started early.

When the steep Bryn Du climb began, Max Walker was the first to attack, splitting the breakaway. However, the peloton came up quickly as the GC battle exploded. Van Aert was there but was alone, and so Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers) and Stevie Williams (Great Britain) attacked together over the top of the climb.

They had a gap of 20 seconds as Van Aert was forced to wait for other riders and precious teammates.

Rodriguez and Williams were initially uncertain if they should ride together. The Spaniard started the stage 36 seconds down on the Welshman and would have to distance him massively to win the overall classification of the Tour of Britain. Their tactics didn’t tally as Williams appeared to struggle on the climb, but they pressed on.

The two extended their lead to over a minute on the road towards Caerphilly, but the peloton never gave up the chase as the strongest and GC contenders finally emerged. Jumbo-Visma and then Q36.5 did a lot of the chasing.

As the riders passed through the finish before the two climbs of Caerphilly Mountain, Rodriguez and Williams led by just 15 seconds.

Caerphilly Mountain is only 1.7km long but climbs at 8.5%. That and the earlier effort cracked Williams, and he was dropped, but Rodriguez pushed on in pursuit of at least a stage victory. Behind, Magnus Sheffield sat on Van Aert’s wheel in defence of his teammate's attack, but the Belgian seemed determined to give his all to defend his overall race lead.

Rodriguez heard the bell ring out with seven kilometres to go, his lead at only 20 seconds. His chances of overall victory were fading, but he could perhaps still win the stage, and so he fought on, reminding everyone of the determination and talent he showed when he won stage 14 at the Tour de France to Morzine in the Alps.

Van Aert chased on the front, aware that he had a 39-second advantage on Rodriguez but that other riders could attack him.

He carefully paced his effort on the climb, going deep to dissuade attacks, and then other riders helped with the chase of Rodriguez as the battle for the podium places began.

Rodriguez stayed clear to win the stage, but the chasers were just behind him, with Van Aert winning the sprint for second to seal a calculated but well-deserved overall victory.

Wout van Aert wins Tour of Britain title as Carlos Rodríguez takes final stage

  • Van Aert’s second-place finish enough to secure second title
  • ‘I had a really hard time. I didn’t think it was possible’

Second place on the climbing stage into Caerphilly secured Wout van Aert his second overall title in the Tour of Britain. Compared with his 2021 victory , however, this was far from straightforward although his fine form had been clear from day one.

Through the hills of south Wales, Ineos’s Spanish starlet Carlos Rodríguez, the eventual stage winner, formed an impromptu alliance with local rider Steve Williams to push Van Aert to the edge, in the first of the eight stages where the Belgian’s Jumbo-Visma team were unable to exert any real grip on proceedings.

After Williams – who was guesting for Great Britain here – and Rodríguez had sprung clear on the climb of Bryn Du, high above Aberdare in the heart of the Rhondda, Van Aert’s teammates had been scattered to the four winds on the high moorland and the two strongest climbers in the race were rapidly forging a healthy advantage ahead of a small chase group, Van Aert faced the prospect of losing the race lead he had taken in winning Thursday’s stage into Felixstowe . “I had a really hard time, I didn’t think it was possible to take the general classification.”

The 28-year-old’s only option was to remain calm and hope that enough of his teammates could battle their way up to him, and that they and other squads would take the strain before the race arrived at the final brace of climbs over Caerphilly Mountain in the last eight miles. “I tried to stay calm, as I knew there were two climbers in front, and they would spend a lot of energy getting to the finish circuit.”

In the hiatus while he waited for Steven Kruijswijk and Nathan Van Hooydonck to catch up, Williams and Rodríguez raced into a lead that briefly exceeded 90 seconds.

With several other teams assisting Jumbo-Visma, the duo’s lead evaporated like the puddles from the rain showers that had greeted the race when it entered the hills, and on reaching Caerphilly they were only a handful of seconds ahead.

The first climb of the mountain broke Williams, a 27-year-old from Aberystwyth who has quietly forged a good career racing for the Bahrain-Merida and Israel-Premier Tech team, and who this year had won the Arctic Race of Norway. Rodríguez forged ahead on his own, but although he has had an outstanding year with a stage win and fifth overall in the Tour de France, he was less of a threat to Van Aert, having lost time in a crash in the Cotswolds on Saturday’s stage into Gloucester.

The Spaniard needed to finish 40sec ahead of Van Aert and his 20sec advantage with one 7km lap of the finish circuit put the race in the balance. With no teammates left at his side, the Belgian had to control the Spaniard’s lead while simultaneously ensuring that he did not crack, and that he did not lose ground to three threats for the overall title: Rodríguez’s Ineos teammate Magnus Sheffield, the Norwegian Tobias Johannessen and the Australian Damien Howson, all of whom were a slender 3sec behind him overall.

after newsletter promotion

While Rodríguez did give the Ineos team a consolatory stage win after the withdrawal of their marquee rider Tom Pidcock on Saturday, he was only 11sec ahead of Van Aert on the line, giving the Belgian his third road race win of 2023. He has had a frustrating mid-season, and it was about time he got the rub of the green.

This was a fine crescendo to a slow-burning week marked by six mass finishes in the first six stages, with 52 riders level on time 3sec behind Van Aert after Friday’s stage into Harlow , but it was far from plain sailing, with this most important climbing stage in effect split into two by a lengthy pause from racing with between 87km and 77km to go, when the race briefly stopped twice and then took a diversion to avoid a stretch of road which had been closed by an accident involving a motorcyclist. The incident was unrelated to the race, but it meant that the entire convoy had to be guided through back streets with racing neutralised and the bunch travelling at controlled speed.

Race report Abram Stockman attacks from the gun. His team mate Joren Bloem rejoins him before Kamil Malecki makes it three at the front. They open up a lead of almost 3 minutes – and, that’s it.

Around the midway marker the attack is history and then Stockmann gives it another go with Danny van der Tuuk, Jack Rootkin-Gray, William Tidball and Hartthijs de Vries. The five open up a lead of more than 1 minute.

Stockman and De Vries are the last riders to be reeled in inside the last 14 kilometres. A late attack by Dimitri Peyskens is neutralised with 3 kilometres to go.

Van Aert leads out Kooij, but Gudmestad comes storming past the winning tandem in the last few hundred metres. Vernon pinpoints the Norwegian and he is heading for victory until Van Poppel outguns him with an ultimate dash to the line.

Van Aert stays in the lead of the general classification.

WST Dubai Park 2024: Ethan Copeland tops field through to men's quarter-finals

Paris 2024

Australia’s Copeland topped the pile ahead of Olympic medallists Keegan Palmer, Cory Juneau and Pedro Barros as the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifier action continued on the second day in the United Arab Emirates.

Ethan Copeland of Australia competes in the Men's Park Qualifiers during the Sharjah Skateboarding Street And Park World Championships 2023

Ethan Copeland put down an 84.22 run to lead 29 skateboarders through to the quarter-finals of WST: Dubai Park 2024 on Thursday (29 February).

Against the backdrop of the looming Dubai skyline, the 18-year-old Australian put down the highest run score of the day in heat six setting the bar for the following 33 others to meet.

Denmark’s Viktor Solmunde came closest to the mark with a run score of 83.10 to qualify in second, with Luiz Mariano of Brazil producing a 82.00 score to finish the open qualifiers in third.

Also through to the next round of the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifier taking place tomorrow, are Tokyo 2020 Olympic medallists Keegan Palmer , Pedro Barros and Cory Juneau . They advanced in 10th, 8th and 26th respectively.

Joining those through to the quarter-finals will be the seeded skaters who bypassed the open qualifiers owing to their Olympic World Skating Ranking. They will be world champion Gavin Bottger , USA's Tate Carew and Brazilian Augusto Akio .

Jagger Eaton and Luigi Cini , who sit first and fifth in the Olympic World Skate Rankings , were also seeded for the event but have opted out of competing in Dubai.

The event, streaming live on Olympics.com and the official Olympics mobile app from the semi-final stage, doubles as a Paris 2024 Olympic qualifier with crucial ranking points on the line ahead of the Olympic Qualfiier Series.

Robert Garrigus, Jeff Overton highlight Cognizant Classic's Monday qualifiers

Monday Qualifiers

Chris Crawford, Michael Gligic also advance to PGA National

Three pros with ample PGA TOUR experience and a mini-tour dreamer punched their ticket to the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches via Monday's open qualifier.

Longtime TOUR pro Robert Garrigus earned medalist honors at the qualifier with a 7-under 65 at Tesoro Club's Palmer course in Port St. Lucie, Florida, with Chris Crawford and Jeff Overton one shot back at 6-under 66. All three earned spots at the Cognizant Classic without needing extra holes.

Six players tied at 5-under 67, requiring a 6-for-1 playoff to determine the Cognizant Classic field's final spot. The playoff was suspended due to darkness Monday evening with three players still in the mix: Michael Gligic, Chris Nido and Kevin Tway.

Gligic earned the final spot via the playoff on Tuesday morning.

Garrigus and Overton have combined for 679 TOUR starts, while Gligic has made 107 TOUR starts but lost his card last fall. Garrigus holds conditional status as a past champion and veteran member, while Overton (also a veteran member) spent six years mostly sidelined due to injury but is attempting a comeback to professional golf. Crawford has competed in three U.S. Opens but never in a non-major TOUR event.
