Tina Turner (born November 26, 1939) is the stage and recording name of Anna Mae Bullock, a critically acclaimed, world renowned R&B and soul singer-songwriter, actress and dancer, hailing from Nutbush, Tennessee, U.S.

Tina Turner’s earliest musical excursion came when she began singing in her teens under the name Little Ann, and later became a backing singer for Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm. It wasn’t long however before Anna Bullock’s soaring vocals stole the show and in 1960 the group transitioned into the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. Alongside Ike, Tina earned critical acclaim and commercial success with the singles “A Fool in Love”, “River Deep – Mountain High”, “Proud Mary”, and “Nutbush City Limits”. The singles earned the duo both national and international esteem, and resulted in a slot opening for the Rolling Stones. In 1974 plagued by Ike’s drug habits and tumultuous behaviour Tina Turner left the group to pursue a solo career.

A year later in 1975 Turner was offered the role of the Acid Queen in The Who’s film version of “Tommy”. Despite providing an unforgettable performance, the film was all too forgettable, and soon passed from public’s consciousness. Turner’s first few solo releases “Acid Queen”, “Rough” and “Love Explosion” all charted poorly and could all too well have deterred a singer of a lesser disposition. However with backing from the likes of Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry and David Bowie, Tina Turner bounced back and released the Al Green Cover “Let’s Stay Together” in 1983. The single catapulted Turner into U.S. and a number of European charts, and resulted in the singer inking a three-album deal with Capitol Records.

The album “Private Dance” was subsequently released in June 1984 charting at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. Selling over 11 million copies, the album spawned the Grammy-winning, No. 1 single “What’s Love Got to Do with It”, along with “Better Be Good to Me”, and “Private Dancer”. Following the release Turner played the role of Aunty Entity in the film “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” for which she later won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress. In 1986 the singer released the single “Typical Male” after which Turner’s music moved away from the upper echelons of the chart. The albums “Foreign Affair” in 1989, “Wildest Dreams” in 1986 and “Twenty Four Seven” in 2000 earned strong reviews from critics and all saw respectable chart placing. The best-of compilation “All the Best” arrived in 2004, followed by a performance alongside Beyoncé at the 2008 Grammy Awards.

Live reviews

Tiny Turner is arguable the best female performers ever! The power and tone of her voice, the energy of her performance and her sheer love for the stage. Very few have got gigs rocking the way Tiny Turner could! She has sold more concert tickets than any other live performer EVER! She has enjoyed success as a singer, dancer, writer and as an actress. She has received an enormous amount of respect from peers, many honours and awards, including 8 grammy awards and record sales of over 100 million! After breaking into the music scene in 1960 whilst part of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue she soon became known worldwide as an unbelievable live act! With amazing songs such as “Proud Mary”, “River Deep- Mountain High”, “A Fool in Love” and “Nutbush City Limits” there was no doubting they’re ability to get a crowd going. She certainly had something quite special, an ability to bring a room alive! To get the room dancing! Even, at the age of my nan, she would be rocking a stage at a stadium sized gig! Considered by many as the great female rock singer ever, the ‘queen of rock and roll’ and a performer who is still performing at the highest level after over 50 years!

Still need convincing? Ok! Once again! Tiny Turner has sold more concert tickets than any other live performer EVER!!!!!

There are few vocalists who are completely incomparable due to the uniqueness of their tones, 80s soul/pop siren Tina Turner is very much one of those. She has a whole plethora of hits and is an icon within her own right and despite the hair not being quite outrageous these days, the stage show very much is. She is an impassioned performer even in her later years and really knows how to work the stage, her accompanying musicians and of course the adoring crowds.

The amount of legendary tracks included tonight could make your head spin 'River Deep, Mountain High' 'Private Dancer' and 'We Don't Need Another Hero' all feature along with covers of iconic rock musicians proving Tina very much lives and breathes the genre. A highlight was a downtempo rendition of 'Addicted To Love' by Robert Palmer which allows that sultry, raspy vocal to really shine. It is of course the finale of 'The Best' and 'Proud Mary' that gets the whole crowd singing, dancing and cheering as the fabulous songstress struts from side to side of shade proving she cannot be considered to be past it.

When Tina Turner Set a Guinness World Record

By kenneth partridge | may 26, 2023.

Tina Turner in Rio de Janeiro.

Following Tina Turner’s death on May 24, 2023, at the age of 83, fans around the world have been paying tribute to the legendary “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll” and celebrating her many accomplishments. Over the course of her incredible five-decade career, the long-legged, raspy-voiced, eternally youthful singer sold more than 150 million records and earned 12 Grammys. She was twice inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—first as a member of Ike and Tina Turner, and later as a solo artist. She also set one astounding concert-attendance record that many people might not be aware of.

On January 16, 1988, Turner performed for approximately 188,000 fans at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In doing so, she set a Guinness World Record for “largest paying concert attendance for a solo artist.” The previous record, 170,000 fans, had been set by Frank Sinatra at the very same stadium eight years earlier.

At the time, Turner was midway through her Break Every Rule Tour, a triumphant global trek that launched in Munich, Germany, on March 4, 1987, and ended in Osaka, Japan, on March 30, 1988. Along the way, Turner played 209 concerts in 132 cities. The tour was initially billed as Turner’s farewell to the road, but in an October 1987 interview with Jet magazine , she clarified that it would be her “last tour for now.” She wanted to take a year off and enjoy a little downtime.

But first, she had a show to do, and as always, she gave it her all. At the record-breaking Rio de Janeiro concert, Turner performed 19 songs and cycled through three miniskirts, undeterred by temps in the high 80s. While Turner was undoubtedly a sex symbol, the audience skewed heavily female, according to a UPI recap . It’s likely many women were inspired by the way Turner had left her abusive husband, Ike, and forged a successful solo career in the ’80s.

“This is important,” a 37-year-old fan named Angela Almeida told UPI. “She transmits that side of her, of suffering, and I certainly feel that.”

Brazil’s deep and abiding love for Tina Turner is evident in footage of the show , which was released on video as Tina Turner: Live in Rio 1988 . “The audience was incredible,” Turner said after the concert. “They really took over.”

Review: Billy Joel and Sting light up San Diego stadium on a cool, soggy night

SAN DIEGO — Take a bow, mother nature!

Thanks to some uncharacteristically wet April weather during Billy Joel’s sold-out concert with Sting at Petco Park on Saturday night, pop-music’s famed piano man has achieved an elite — if not entirely coveted — distinction. He now joins the Rolling Stones, Miles Davis and Tony Bennett on the very short list of legendary musicians whose open-air San Diego concerts saw them forge ahead in a noble quest to reign in the rain.

Happily, no precipitation marred Sting’s superb, 83-minute opening set, which included a propulsive version of his funk-fueled 1993 romp, “Heavy Cloud No Rain.” Alas, the song includes a couplet that proved all too prescient Saturday night at the downtown ball park: The clouds won’t go till their work is done / Every morning you’ll hear me pray / If only it would rain today.

The clouds started their work at 9:10 p.m., midway through “Movin’ Out,” the second selection by Joel and his brassy, one-woman, seven-man band. The light but steady rain continued through his next seven numbers, which included “Vienna,” “An Innocent Man,” “Don’t Ask Me Why,” a truncated version of the Rolling Stones’ “Start Me Up,” and the jazzy, finger-snapping “Big Man on Mulberry Street,” which featured Joel trading vocal lines with an umbrella-twirling Sting.

“Bring your raincoat!” Joel quipped as Sting strolled on to the enormous stage, which stretched across much of Petco Park’s right and center fields.

Before “Start Me Up,” Joel told the audience: “Don’t get all excited; I ain’t Mick Jagger.” Indeed, at 74, Joel is six years younger than the hyper-kinetic, age-defying Jagger. (The Rolling Stones, incidentally, were the first rock act to perform at the then-new Petco Park in 2005, a year after it opened.)

When “Start Me Up” concluded, Joel and his well-drilled band playfully broke into a few verses of the 1964 Riveras’ chestnut, “California Sun,” which was memorably covered in 1977 by the Ramones. Raindrops were visible on parts of his grand piano, but Joel was undaunted.

“We’re from New York — this is nothing!” he told the cheering crowd. Even so, Joel’s stage attire was topped off with a black zip-up jacket, a cap and a wool scarf. The drizzle was constant enough that several of this reporter’s pens stopped working because of how wet the pages in my notebook had become.

The rain abated — for a while — shortly after Joel launched into his ninth selection, “New York State of Mind,” his signature song and one of the highlights of his set.

The air was alternately dry and moist for the 13 numbers that followed in Joel’s concert. It culminated with five sure-thing encore numbers — “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” “Uptown Girl,” “It’s Still Rock and’ Roll To Me,” “Big Shot” and “You May be Right,” which included a charged snippet of Led Zeppelin’s 1971 classic, “Rock and Roll,” sung by Joel band guitarist Mike DelGuidice.

The show ended at 10:55 p.m., five minutes before Petco Park’s curfew. It was Joel’s second appearance at the stadium, where he delivered a memorable, 26-song performance in 2016 to a sold-out crowd.

Then, as on Saturday, Joel’s grand piano periodically rotated on the stage to afford the audience on each side of the packed stadium a better vantage point. Saturday’s concert was shorter by five songs than in 2016. What also differed is Joel’s singing voice, which has lost some of its range and impact.

He acknowledged as much when introducing “An Innocent Man,” the title track of his 1983 album. “I didn’t realize when I recorded this that I was saying goodbye to a lot of my high notes,” Joel said. “If I hit a lot of flat notes, you’re allowed to groan.”

He was thoroughly engaged and his singing was warm and resonant on winning renditions of “Vienna,” “Only the Good Die Young,” “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” and “Piano Man.” And his keyboard work was rarely less than sparkling. But on other numbers, he repeatedly strained to hit notes, despite singing them in lower keys than they were originally recorded.

Of course, the rain and cool night air could have been factors for the veteran troubadour, who tonight at 9 will be featured on the CBS TV concert special, “Billy Joel: The 100th — Live at Madison Square Garden.”

But indoors or out, his crowd-pleasing Petco Park concert was marred by inconsistent pacing, no more so that when “The River of Dreams” segued into Ike & Tina Turner’s “River Deep, Mountain High” — a good, but not great, showcase for singer and multi-instrumentalist Crystal Talifero. This was followed by guitarist DelGuidice’s vocal rendition of the storied Puccini opera aria, “Nessun dorma” — which translates as “Nobody’s Sleeping” — as the lead-in to “Piano Man.”

Say, what? Even if this was meant as an inside joke, clearly nobody was sleeping on such a damp, cool evening. And the enthusiastic audience, which sang along and danced en masse, left no doubt of its devotion to Joel and the songs that many attendees grew up hearing.

Pacing and vocal power were no problem for Sting, whose 16-song opening set was a master class in how to structure, balance and deliver a concert that soared from start (a spirited duet with Joel on “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic”) to finish (“Every Breath You Take,” likely the most memorable rock song ever about stalking).

Sting, who performed with equal elan in October at his SDSU concert here, was in excellent voice throughout Saturday. No matter how many times he has previously sung “Roxanne,” “Message in a Bottle,” So Lonely” and “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free,” he made each sound wonderfully fresh and vital. Sting’s songs are durable and flexible, enabling him to modify their keys, time signatures and arrangements in a manner that simultaneously saluted and extended them.

His exemplary bass playing was, likewise, a marvel of taste, concision and musicality that added welcome dimension to the songs at hand. He was matched, note for note, by his very talented, one-woman, five-man band. It included Ben Butler, very ably subbing for longtime Sting guitarist Dominic Miller (who is now embarked on a solo tour in Europe).

Sting consistently injected fresh vigor into such favorites as “Message in a Bottle,” Brand New Day,” “Fields of Gold,” and “King of Pain,” adding welcome new twists while remaining true to each song’s essence. Rather than rush through songs, he extended a number of them — including “Walking on the Moon,” which lasted 12 minutes but was not a second too long — the better to build dynamic tension and release.

No stranger to stadium concerts, Sting commanded the stage with an inviting combination of authority, wit and good-natured bonhomie. Even more so than Joel, he repeatedly engaged the audience in spirited, call-and-response vocal exchanges. Sting also delivered a few well-timed asides. (Introducing The Police’s 1981 gem, “Spirits in the Material World,” he deadpanned: “I can assure you it’s not a Madonna song,” a wry allusion to her 1984 hit, “Material Girl.”)

After the harmonica-led “Brand New Day,” Sting commented on the inclement weather, saying: “Man, it’s cold! I come from England, where it’s (now) sunny and warm. You can’t trust the weather anymore, which is what this next song is about.” He and his band then delivered an expertly calibrated version of “Heavy Weather No Rain,” during which he ad-libbed some extra lyrics: “You’re in San Diego — my ship just came in!”

Sting wisely let his music speak for itself, most notably on “Desert Rose.” Its snaking, Arabic-inspired melody seemed all the more poignant at a time when, sadly, war is again rife in the Middle East.

At 72, Sting remains an arresting musical force. The bar he set for Joel to follow Saturday was, ultimately, a bridge too far — although that may reflect the fact Sting tours constantly, while Joel currently averages just two concerts a month. Either way, on Saturday neither of them let the rain dampen their musical parade.

Tina turner's birthplace to build bronze statue in her honor, tina turner statue coming to hometown ... nearly 1 year after death.

Tina Turner 's getting a huge honor in the place where she was born, as local leaders have approved a bronze Tina statue -- about a year after the mayor first promised to erect one.

Bill Rawls, Jr. the mayor of Brownsville, Tennessee tells TMZ ... the city has decided to fund a six-foot-tall bronze statue that will be placed in the city's Heritage Park, which is located right near the high school Turner attended.

We're told the statue's gonna cost around $150k with the city making the initial deposit before public/private funds cover the rest. The fundraising is starting ASAP, but Rawls says he's not worried about puttin' together the cash.

Remember, we spoke with Mayor Rawls just a few days after TT's death last May, when he laid out this exact plan ... a statue for Tina located in Heritage Park.

They're not just stopping with the statue though ... 'cause the plan is to build a huge new plaza for the park, with Tina's statue serving as the centerpiece.

The city's already home to the Tina Turner Museum, so a huge plaza dedicated to the "Queen of Rock & Roll" just makes sense.

Tina Turner, 'Queen of Rock 'n' Roll,' Dead at 83

Rawls says the city wants to honor Tina in the biggest way it can, and thinks putting the statue right near her old high school is the best way to keep her memory alive.

The statue -- set to be made by sculptor Fred "Ajano" Ajanogha -- should be ready to unveil in fall 2025 if all goes to plan.

Tina died last year at 83, after facing a number of health problems. Many stars -- including Lizzo , Patti LaBelle and John Fogerty paid tribute to the star after her death.

Now, her hometown's determined to do the same.

The Great Aussie Promoters, by Greg Tingle - 5th October 2003

tina turner stadium tour

Promoters Australia Entertainment Events

Australian has produced, or is at least home to, some of the greatest promoters of all time.

What is it about Australia that is able to cultivate the great promoters?

Ok, firstly what is a promoter? One who promotes, of course.

In this case we are talking about the greats in the entertainment, media and public relations business. Ah, the lines continue to get blurred as the new wave of convergent media hits us.

Who are these mysterious promoters?

Ok, starting from the top is the man they call "Harry M", Harry M. Miller (The Harry M Miller Group). Then we have Max Markson (Markson Sparks!) Michael Chugg (Michael Chugg Entertainment), Paul Dainty (Dainty Consolidated Entertainment), Michael Gudinski (Frontier Touring Company) and Michael and Kevin Jacobsen (Jacobsen Entertainment). Ok, we know that there are others that may feel left out, however, this elite group has more than cemented their place in the history of Australian promoting. The waves these guys cause show little sign of flattening out and their positive influence in the world of entertainment continues. These movers "n" shakers are indeed here for the long haul. As AC/DC said, "It's a long way to the top", and these moguls won't be taking a fall any time soon, regardless of what the rumour mongers may have you believe.

What makes these promoters so great you ask?

Many factors. We could speculate indefinitely. Let's take a look at who they are.

The Players

Harry M. Miller - personality management, media management and marketing. His clients have included Deborah Hutton, the Rolling Stones, Judy Garland and a cast of Reality TV personalities and deals.

Max Markson - personality management, specialising in the public speaking circuit. All of the above know how to promote not only their talent, but also themselves. They have a nose for what the public will likely respond to.

The stakes are high in this promoting and public relations game, where one scoop can net hundreds of thousands and conversely a slip up could cost the ranch.

What big, what's in, what's out, what's hot or cold…what angle…what's the vibe on the street; these are all things to consider in this deadly game of promotion and P.R. Little wonder some of these operations contain their own crisis management division, for when things turn sour.

Next time you ponder how much of your hard earned cash you have forked out to see your favourite performer, spare a thought for the promoter who helped make it a reality, by laying it all on the line, to get your favourite gig to town.

Some may say these promoters are little more than master manipulators, but those in the know, will tell you that they are smart operators who know all the tricks of trade; and that only years of trial and error, enormous risk and incredible judgement can produce the right outcome for their clients and the public.

Imagine the logistics involved in promoting a rock band, and making sure they are at the right place, at the right time, for the right money, and ensuring the right insurance measures have been taken into consideration! Time has shown that these entertainment types sure know how to whip up a frenzy in a hotel room. Talk about a recipe for sleepless nights.

Simply dealing with the egos of some of the top line performers is enough to make the average man cringe.

It wasn't many decades ago that elite international performers baulked at the idea of taking the arduous 23-hour flight from the U.S to grace our shores. As recently as last year, once of the greatest showman of all time, Hulk Hogan, pulled out of the Australian WWE tour, citing a bad back. Even Vince McMahon, American master promoter and wrestling puppeteer, apparently couldn't convince the "Hulkster" to take the trip. The storyline was that one of his opponents put his back out, but intelligent Australian fans saw through the facade. Perhaps there wasn't sufficient influence by Australian promoters and P.R. men, to make the "Hulk" deal a reality.

It's true, professional wrestling aka "sports entertainment", is in a phylum of its own; however the principles are consistent across the entertainment spectrum.

These promoters deserve every cent they earn. Sure, they do it for themselves of course, but they do it for you too.

It hard not to typify Australian promoters as some of the best in the world.

Perhaps our geographic remoteness has necessitated that our entertainment entrepreneurs have extraordinary insight and acute judgement for what "will fly" in the land "down under".

Dinkum Aussies all the way.

Promoters discuss 2003

i. World events hit promotions industry Many leading promoters have publicly acknowledged that the past year has been one of the toughest for the Australian entertainment and promotions industry. After the Bali bombing, Australians became concerned that they were now targets of possible terrorist attacks and audience numbers at major events dwindled. This situation was further exacerbated by the SARS epidemic, which caused health fears around the world, and the commencement of the Iraqi conflict a few months later took its toll on box office revenues.

For example, JEL (Jacobsen Entertainment Limited), Australia's only ASX-listed entertainment and promotions company, believes that the past year's difficulties were unprecedented in the Jacobsens' long history of presenting attraction with JEL losing $8.5 million on two world-class shows - the Bruce Springsteen tour and the Witches of Eastwick - within a short period of time. As a precautionary measure, the JEL board has appointed administrators KordaMentha to assist the company to work through the current period, while protecting the company's value as restructuring options are developed.

Certainly, the Jacobsen family are determined that JEL, in which they own 78 per cent, will continue to operate and believe the strengthening outlook for the promotions industry will work in their favour.

ii. Environment looking brighter

Despite the severity and length of the recent downturn, the entertainment industry is cyclical. People want to be entertained. Most promoters are optimistic about the long-term outlook and are already seeing signs of a pick-up in shows and attendances.

Jacobsen Entertainment Fights Back (article full credit to Julius Media) 29th October 2003

Australian entertainment promotion firm Jacobsen Entertainment Limited hope to be out of administration soon, and expect to announce a restructure on November 21. Director Michael Jacobsen told CX Web that the firm is working hard on new shows for 2004, after founder Kevin Jacobsen returned from a round world trip to shore up support.

The firm has traded for almost 40 years as a family company, before floating slightly more than a year ago. “No one could have foreseen what happened”, Michael asserts, detailing the difficult trading conditions that lead to a voluntary administrator being appointed.

Employing 15 people prior to becoming a public company, JEL didn’t undergo massive expansion, according to Michael. “We had to corporatise, to appoint a CEO and a CFO”. Now some staff have been stood down, but the firm is trading, with two tours under way.

The strengthening of the Australian dollar has assisted, and trading conditions now are more suitable – but it still costs about $3 million to stage an average theatre production. “The cost is relative, it costs 3 million US dollars there, and 3 million pounds in the UK”.

The Jacobsen family loaned the public company an estimated $3 million in the months leading up to the appointment of their administrator, who is able to quarantine creditors and operate the firm with available resources.

The message from the Jacobsen family is that they are on the case, and expect to be back in business very soon.

Fatima Robinson Talks Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour, Crowns Her ‘The Michael Jackson of Our Time’

Fatima Robinson

Beyoncé may be riding high off Cowboy Carter right now, but Renaissance is the gift that keeps on giving.

In a revelatory conversation with Ahmir Questlove Thompson on his Questlove Supreme podcast, renowned choreographer Fatima Robinson revealed how Beyoncé came up with stage design and concept for the Renaissance World Tour during the pandemic — and why the superstar shifted her approach to dance on her most recent trek.

Beyoncé Achieves Eighth No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 With ‘Cowboy Carter’

“That was Beyoncé sitting in a pandemic with a lot of time on her hands and coming up with the most incredible, creative stage that I had ever gotten to work on,” Robinson gushed of the Renaissance World Tour stage. The sold-out stadium tour featured two separate platforms connected by a moving ramp, a main stage complete with a sprawling flatscreen, a B stage that stretched into the crowd, and a slew of props including, a tank, pyrotechnics, a laser show, a giant clam shell, robot arms, a flying “disco horse” and various levitating platforms.

Trending on Billboard

“She has quite a few choreographers across her span of music,” said Robinson. “We gave me the title ‘director of choreography’ because I was the point person that all the choreographers worked under and with. It was such a big boulder to get up a hill, that show.”

While Robinson has worked with Beyoncé in the past — most notably on 2006’s Oscar-winning Dreamgirls and her “Be Alive” performance at the 2022 Oscars — she joined forces with several other choreographers for the Renaissance tour, including her two other team members, Chris Grant and four other choreographers who worked on numbers sporadically.

Her first solo concert tour since 2016’s Formation World Tour , the Renaissance World Tour presented a notably different Beyoncé. While the three-hour show was still a feast for the eyes and ears, the performance included less intense choreography than her past tours — partially due to a knee injury she suffered before those 56 sold-out shows.

Robinson’s revelations echo sentiments Beyoncé herself shared in Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé . Throughout the documentary, Queen Bey mused about looking to her idols to inform how she moves in her career. The Renaissance tour was a celebration of that, from a surprise appearance from Diana Ross to a multi-city tribute to the late Tina Turner .

“Look at how Prince was when he passed away, he had those hip replacements because of all those splits and stuff,” noted Robinson. “Look where Michael [Jackson] is. We want you around performing for years to come, so let’s not put that kind of pressure. Let’s ease into it, let’s stand there and be powerful and step into a different kind of power, and guess what? They gon’ come with you!”

That approach to performing also resulted in a very Beyoncé take on the concept of an opening act. For each show, Beyoncé began with a set of ballads , introduced by a beautiful piano-led rendition of 2003’s seminal “Dangerously In Love 2.”

“I turned to her and I was like, ‘This is really fly, starting with ballads,'” recounted Robinson. “She laughed and she said, “I’m opening up for myself!”

In addition to the Renaissance World Tour, Robinson also worked on 2023’s The Color Purple movie musical, which topped the domestic box office on opening day and earned one Oscar nomination (best supporting actress for Danielle Brooks).
