The months of sweat and tears have passed and the stakeholders have finally signed off. Your new website design is about to go live – but how do you announce a new website launch? How do you get people to care about a new website? How do you get the most traffic and conversion you can out of a new website launch?

Send out a press release.

First of all, target local business publications and anyone who you feel would be interested in the new site. Then move on to utilizing the press release process as a link-building exercise. If you write up a professional press release and use a resource like Press Release Jet to get the press release spread far and wide for the purpose of gaining links back to the site.

Unless you’re a very big company, serious news sources won’t make a big deal out of your launch but it doesn’t mean you can’t use the opportunity to get on some cool sites and possibly promote it there. Press Release Jet and other services distribute your press release to the press release section of local news stations websites around the company so you can even promote those articles once they get published – and they do get published on very credible sites that can make you and your company look good. Just make sure your press release takes an angle that would be interesting to your prime demographic and isn’t just navel-gazing.

Schedule a couple posts for every social media account you have

Use the post scheduling tool Buffer or Hootsuite to set up well-written posts on all your social accounts, but make sure you have them set for the hard launch, not the soft launch. Let’s be real, the first day any website launches there are usually some tweaks that need to be made and things that are getting squared away. I generally suggest waiting a week to really make the big announcement. But at that point, announce it 2 or 3 times (especially on high volume platforms like Twitter), and include an image of your website in all its glory or even a gif of someone scrolling through the site showing it’s best features. Emphasize new features and promote a tweet and Facebook post

If there are new features that your customers or clients will love, take a little video of someone using them and showing the feature in action and promote it in a Facebook post or tweet. Not everyone is going to intuitively know to go check every nook and cranny of your site and find why it’s so cool, so you might need to give a little social media marketing nudge or two to let them know you’re trying to serve them better. Promoted posts and tweets are a great way to get the information about new features out there more quickly.

Create a blog post about what’s changed and any refocusing you’ve done on the site

This one is a no-brainer. You just spent a ton of time working on a site to better showcase your products or services and now it’s time to share why the new site is better. It’s also a good idea to do a write-up because people really do search “Company Name Website Redesign” in search engines hoping to find out what’s been changed and why. In a recent re-launch people were landing on the post from 2 years before when the last iteration was launched, so we did a write-up really quickly and redirected the traffic that was coming to the old post to the new post – as it was clear that’s what they were looking for.

Introducing New Website E-mail

Use a popup plug-in on your website to engage with new visitors

With all the buzz generated by your website launch, you’ll need a way to interact with the new visitors headed to your homepage. Start a conversation with those visitors by collecting info using a plug-in like JetPopup — it lets you design a unique popup banner, choose when and where your popup will appear, and decide what information to collect. Create a game around a hidden easter egg on the new site

You can drop the word “serendipity” on the website somewhere and give a $25 gift card to anyone who finds it and sends you a screenshot. You could really hide anything you’d like, but the idea is to incentivize finding it and encourage people to explore the site your team worked hard on.

Edit your email signature and add “Check out our new website!”, linking to the new site

Speaking of the effectiveness of e-mail, try the drip method by adding the announcement to your e-mail footer and every routine e-mail you send helps spread awareness. You might not feel comfortable sending every contact the announcement normally, but subtly in your email signature can let them know without being pushy.

Recognize that “new” is relative, and keep playing it up for a month or so

You may be tired of your new website before it even launches (because it was a lot of work to create content for, coordinate people to complete, etc) but other people haven’t seen it yet. So don’t spend one day letting everyone know it’s launched and  then give up. A couple posts on each social network, an e-mail, a press release, a blog post, and some promoted posts or ads around the launch can linger for at least a couple weeks to make sure the news of the launch is spread far and wide. At most, you can spend a month tactfully sharing the new website launch and new features on it – try to take a new angle each time you do, and people will be less likely to get tired of it.

Test whether your message is clear

  • Test the impact of your homepage on users (see my guidelines for a very simple test plan ).  Make sure the homepage gives them a good idea of what your website offers.
  • Verify that your homepage gets clicks by checking that you have a low bounce rate  in your Google Analytics statistics for landings on your homepage.  A low bounce rate (of say less than 49%) means that more than half the visitors who land on your homepage are clicking to read more, and that is good.   Bounce rates vary from site to site, and are sometimes misleading – what is important is that your homepage bounce rate is as good as or better than the bounce rates on your other webpages.

88 compelling words and phrases to prompt website visitors into action [Infographic]

As consumers’ buying behaviors evolve, the way we sell needs to evolve to match.

But what does that actually mean for marketers and the digital world?

For starters, we need to ensure our websites are optimized not only for the best possible user experience, but for the one that will get them to take action.

The right feel, colors, design, images, and content are all extremely important elements that influence the buyer’s journey .

Even more granular, our calls-to-action, forms, header hierarchy, personalization, automation, and language can also affect the way a website visitor acts.

Social Media Today recently published an infographic by Ashlyn Writes that focuses specifically on influencing the actions of website visitors through words and phrases.

Depending on what action you’d like your visitors to take, some language choices have been proven to be more effective than others, due to a particular psychological response.

Below is a summary of the 88 compelling words and phrases curated by Ashlyn Writes that are worth testing on your website to improve your conversion rate.

Four types of actionable words and phrases to use in your content

Conversion copywriting can be hard to master, but it is essential. We use it in our emails, website and landing pages, blog articles, and social media posts. The way we write and portray our messaging can have a large effect on our conversion rates.

By focusing on four main groups of words and phrases, marketers and salespeople can optimize the content they create in order to elicit the action they want their audience to take.

1. Exclusivity

Examples: Some examples of this type are: members only, become an insider, VIP, only available to subscribers, and log in required.

Why It’s Effective: People want to feel important. By positively labeling those who join our Facebook group, subscribe to our blog, or become a loyal member, as a community, we can create a “special” and inclusive feeling. For the people who aren’t a part of any of those things, they often want what they can’t have. They want to be one of the exclusive few.

Where You Can Use It: Like IMPACT’s own IMPACT Elite , a Facebook Group that accepts certain people as members can be a great place to imply exclusivity. It’s not a group for just anyone, so the people who are a part of it know they’re special.

2. Scarcity

Examples: To master this, try phrases like: limited offer, last chance, spots running out, and early-bird rate ends soon.

Why It’s Effective: Psychology has long proven that when something seems limited in availability, it’s natural for people to want it more -- and want it faster. (Think of FOMO -- Fear Of Missing Out -- for example.)

Where You Can Use It: In the digital sense, try using these phrases when you’re hosting an online event or selling tickets online to a physical event. For example, host a webinar with limited spots or create early-bird pricing for tickets to a live event .

3. Lower risk

Examples: Some lower risk words include: certified, money back guarantee, tried-and-true, reliable, endorsed, and best-selling.

Why It’s Effective: By using lower risk words, you’re implying that the risk and potential monetary loss is minimal. People feel better about purchasing or clicking, because they’re somewhat “covered” if something goes wrong.

Where You Can Use It: An e-commerce store is a great place to try using lower risk words and phrases. Offer a product with a money back guarantee, or let them try the product before they buy it.

4. Power 

Examples: Some examples of power words are: best, bonus, complete, ultimate, promote, secret, win, and premier.

Why It’s Effective: Power words evoke emotion and trigger curiosity. Content that elicits relatable emotions is more likely to be shared than content that doesn’t strike a chord. Words and phrases that cause curiosity have a higher tendency to receive clicks and engagement due to the fact that people simply cannot resist knowing all the details.

Where You Can Use It: Try using power words on a landing page for a premium content offer. For example, don’t give away The Guide to Conversion Rate; give your audience The Ultimate Guide to a Sure-Fire Conversion Rate Strategy that Really Works.

Utah SGID Statewide Roads Data Layer Updates

UGRC recently completed updates to the SGID Roads data layer. Please visit our Roads and Highway System data page where you will find information about the Roads data model, as well as a web service layer to the SGID Roads data and direct download links in shapefile and geodatabase format.

These updates are also reflected in UGRC’s address locators .
