Courses range from a weekend to a 12 week program and are for all levels.
Beach motel or camp - comfort or wildlife
A Beach Motel rather than a surf hostel, all rooms are serviced and only have 3 single beds per room (or upgrade to a private room), private bathrooms, kitchenette, common area, and pool table. Weekend courses are held in Bendalong peninsula, 3 hours south of Sydney. With Conjola national park at your doorstep, you can even watch migrating whales in season. The 6 beaches face different directions meaning the waves are perfect to learn surfing in all conditions! Breakfast, board and wetsuit hire are all included.
Beginner & advanced, professional coaches & suited waves
You will find different surf options from soft beach breaks to barreling reef breaks, suitable for beginners and advanced surfers. As a member of Surfing Australia, you’re assured the highest standards of coaching by qualified coaches with certificates in Lifesaving, Working With Children Checks and Senior First Aid. You’ll have a professional coach who’s traveled the world coaching and still gets weekly training, so you’re in the best hands! You even get the chance to shape your own board if you want, and are constantly encouraged to improve your surf skills, no matter what level.

Wollongong Beaches
Home to scenic ocean pools, top surf breaks, foreshore picnic spots and dog-friendly stretches of sand, the beautiful Wollongong and Illawarra region is blessed with some of NSW’s best-kept beach secrets, with an option to suit everyone. From Stanwell Park Beach in the north to Windang Beach in the south, enjoy a perfect seaside escape against the striking backdrop of the rainforested Illawarra Escarpment .
Stretches of sand in Wollongong
The heart of Wollongong itself is framed by beautiful beaches. North Wollongong Beach and Wollongong City Beach are the most popular beaches. Both are next to reserves with picnic areas. Another lovely spot ideal for young kids is Belmore Basin . Farther south is Windang Beach , near Shellharbour , and Lake Illawarra , a large saltwater lake popular for sailing, waterskiing, kayaking and other water sports.
Thirroul, Austinmer and Bulli
Just north of Wollongong is Bulli , where you’ll find Bulli Beach and Sandon Point Beach . Take on the surf at Thirroul Beach , where there’s a park with a children’s play area, or swim in two large rock pools at Austinmer Beach . Pitch a tent beachside at Coledale Beach and wake to the sound of breaking waves.
In Stanwell Park , spend some quality time on the fine golden sands of Stanwell Park Beach , as hanggliders and paragliders soar through the sky above you. The large, grassed reserve on the edge of the beach is ideal for family picnics with barbecue facilities, a kiosk and children’s playground.
You can also bring your dog to many of the beaches in the area. Little Austinmer, McCauley’s and Sharkies beaches are dog-friendly 24 hours a day. Others, like Stanwell Park, Scarborough , Thirroul, Bulli and Woonoona operate on a time-share basis. Make sure to check the signs first.
Ocean pools
The Illawarra region is famous for its spectacular ocean pools and there are more than a dozen dotted along the coastline. You’ll find them in Bulli , Towradgi , Woonoona, Bellambi and Coledale . One of the prettiest is at Coalcliff – legend has it that miners blasted it from the rock in the 1920s with dynamite they snuck out of the mines in their pockets.
Surfing and whale watching
Along the coast, you’ll find iconic surf breaks for experienced surfers, as well as beginners. Learn to surf with Pines Surfing Academy , Illawarra Surf Academy and Australian Surf Tours . The headlands by the beaches are great vantage points for whale watching. Spot humpback whales on their annual migration along the NSW South Coast , between May and November.

Wollongong combines the best of the outdoors with a burgeoning cultural scene to deliver activities and attractions to suit everyone from the nature lover and adventurer to the refined diner and art lover, with plenty more thrown in for the kids.
Attractions
Nan Tien Temple , which means paradise of the south in Chinese, is the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere. Since its opening in 1995, the temple continues to draw a steady stream of tourists, intent on walking through the serene gardens and admiring the sheer scale of the temple. Dine at the onsite café for authentic Asian cuisine and a steaming hot cup of tea before you hit the road.
Standing proudly on the northern side of the headland is the historic Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse . Constructed from wrought iron in 1871, the local heritage site was restored in 2002 but has been inactive since 1974. Not to be confused with its slightly more modern neighbour, the electricity-powered Wollongong Head Lighthouse to its right, was built from reinforced concrete in 1936 and is still in operation today.
Take a self-guided or host-guided walk around the winding paths of the Wollongong Botanic Gardens . There are a large variety of gardens to explore, from the rainforest and the flowering trees and shrubs to the succulents and the Australian open forest and more. There is a playground to keep the kids entertained with maze and climbing net, as well as plenty of green spaces to relax in.
Views don’t get much better than the one you’ll find at Bald Hill Lookout in Stanwell Tops at the northern tip of Wollongong. Not only will you see expansive views of the Pacific Ocean and the iconic Sea Cliff Bridge, but you’ll also watch hang-gliders and paragliders launch themselves off the edge to glide over coastline. The lookout is an internationally acclaimed area for the sport, and is the very spot where Australian aeronautical pioneer Lawrence Hargrave first flew his box kite in 1894.
Wollongong and its surrounding suburbs are home to some of the coast’s best beaches. If it’s a surf you seek, Sandon Point and Windang Island are two of the best spots in Wollongong and the winter months deliver the most consistent swells.
For those more interested in swimming, relaxing on the sand, or picnicking in a reserve, then head to either Wollongong City Beach or North Wollongong Beach. Nearby Stanwell Park Beach, Coledale Beach and the rock pools at Austinmer Beach are also great alternatives. Swimmers can also get in some early morning laps at the Continental Pool right on Wollongong beach.
There are plenty of hiking trails to explore around Wollongong, but the Sublime Point walking track is one of the most iconic. The steep 45-minute climb to the top will reward you with far-reaching views over the city and the Pacific Ocean.
If you’re itching to throw a line in the water head to Wollongong City Beach and fish around the boulders or off the rock platform for tailor, salmon, bream and drummer. The breakwall in Wollongong Harbour is another great option.
Once they’ve had enough of the beach, kids can burn off all that extra energy at MagicZoom . The indoor family play centre is kitted out with soft play, climbing structures, slides and an arcade.
Flip Out is another high-energy activity guaranteed to get your child’s approval. Several of the highlights at the indoor trampoline park include the foam pit, wall running, a human pinball trampoline and the basketball trampoline court.
Take little ones to the Early Start Discovery Space to visit Australia’s only dedicated children’s museum. The life-sized exhibits provide interactive, play-focused experiences that include crawling inside a giant stomach, designing and building a house, acting on the stage, crawling through a cave and much more.

Order a quality cup of coffee, a delicious brunch spread and watch the surf roll in over North Wollongong Beach as you sit back and soak in the coastal vibes at Diggies . The seasonal menu is chock full with mouth-watering breakfast favourites, including fluffy buttermilk pancakes served with fresh strawberries, maple syrup and optional additions of sweet ricotta and crispy bacon.
You’ll find Lee and Me café inside a charming old heritage terrace house. Cosy on up alongside the fireplace in winter, soak in the sun on the outdoor terrace with friends in summer or order from the takeaway menu for days when you can’t linger. Try the Prana sticky chai latte with steamed milk and honey, the porridge topped with roasted apple and cinnamon crumble or the pork toastie stuffed with slow cooked pork, relish, cheese and pickles.
The Brewery is the home of Illawarra’s craft beer and also a top notch place to grab a hearty feed. Try the Big Brewery Burger with Black Angus beef, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, caramelised onions all drizzled with chipotle aioli and a side of fries. They also have a menu jam-packed with tasty quick bites, a selection of mains on the a la carte menu and a kids menu for the little ones.
The Scarborough Hotel is well worth the 25-minute drive outside of Wollongong to experience the clifftop beer garden with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. Sit on the grass, soak up the sun and dine on your choice of share plates, seafood, hearty modern Australian mains or classic pub fare such as the market fish and chips or cheese burger and chips.

Family of surfers connect with culture at Indigenous Classic
A love of surfing runs deep in the Simon family.
Mark Simon and his four children, Taj, Summer, Bodhi and Malia, all based on the Gold Coast, made the trek south to the Awabakal coast for the annual Surfest Indigenous Classic at Merewether Beach in Newcastle.
It's something they've done for the better part of a decade, competing in an event that marries culture to the water.
"We're from Birpai Country — we're saltwater people, so I think we really connect to the ocean in a special way," 22-year-old Summer said.
"When you're out in the water, you're not really thinking about much, it's definitely a nice little reset."
'Takes everything away'
The Indigenous Classic has been held for the past 26 years, and is known as one of the most prestigious Indigenous meets in Australia.
Just before Mark Simon hit the water for his first heat on Saturday he reflected on what the ocean does for him.
"Getting into salt water, it's kind of refreshing and it takes everything away," he said.
"I do think of our ancestors, especially if there's marine life coming in and around us.
"I always just say it's like our ancestors come in and say hello."
Moments after he paddled out, a pod of dolphins appeared nearby.
'You're never too young'
Usually it is the kids that pick up on what mum and dad do, but it was the other way around for the Simons.
"[Dad] didn't start surfing until we were born," laughed 20-year-old Taj.
Mark, 45, says "you're never too young".
"Just get out and have a crack and and make sure you have fun with it," he said.
Bodhi, 17, said it was a given she would pick up the family pastime.
"Growing up I was always watching summer and Taj, so I just wanted to be like them, so that's what got me into it," she said.
The youngest sibling, 11-year-old Malia, said surfing with her family brought her joy.
"It's just a fun sport and you feel happy when you're in the water," she said.
Bodhi won the open women's title with a score of 7.40 and Taj won the open men's with a score of 13.85.
